The police in Atteridgeville conducted an operation in which 14 arrests were made over the weekend. The charges range from possession of dagga, drinking in public, driving under the influence of alcohol and possession of stolen goods. According to the Atteridgeville police spokesperson, Captain Thomas Mufumadi, the operation was one of many operations to come, because residents are now preparing themselves for the festive season. “During this time of the year there is a lot of lawlessness in our streets and people tend to be overtaken by excitement and start drinking in public, which is against the law,” said Mufumadi. Other areas the police will be looking at closely are public open spaces that residents frequently use during this time of the year. “Areas such as Moroe, Rankie and Mphakanyane parks, will be monito-red closely as residents tend to drink in public in those areas and also cause traffic congestion especially in Moroe Park over weekends.” Moroe Park is an open space that is regularly used over weekends, especially on Sunday’s, when traffic comes to a standstill. Some residents have difficulty to drive in and out of their property, as people who visit the park block the street and sometimes park their vehicles in front of residents’ gates. Last year the Tshwane metro police erected palisades on all entrances leading to Moroe Park and the only people who were allowed to drive in Moroe Street were residents.

Mother killed, baby unscathed Residents fear xenophobic attacks will flare up again after a shopkeeper pulled out a gun and starting shooting at them Gavin Emmanuel

Couple assaults store owner Gavin Emmanuel

In what local residents dubbed a real life ‘Bonnie and Clyde’ incident in Luttig Street in Pretoria West, left residents with more questions than answers. A man and a woman, who is believed to be a prostitute, beat the owner of a store in Luttig Street with a steel pipe on the head and made off with R600. According to

Sergeant Janie Swart of the Pretoria West police station, they entered the store pretending to buy something. “The man entered the store first, pretending to be a shopper. After a while the woman entered the store and they both started to hit the shop owner with a steel pipe,” said Swart. Swart mentioned that the woman, who was with the male suspect when he robbed the supermarket, is a known prostitute in

the area. “The woman gave herself over to the police and confessed to the assault and robbery. She also showed the police where the male suspect was. The police arrested both suspects. They were charged with business robbery,” said Swart. Swart said when police arrested the male suspect they did not find any money in his possession. He told the police that he used the money to buy shoes.

Jeffsville informal settlement is on the brink of experiencing xenophobic attacks again. This is after a 29-year-old woman was shot dead while carrying her son on her back on October 13. Dorris Rambau was busy with her daily chores when she heard a commotion and people screaming in the street where she lives. When Rambau went outside to investigate, she heard shots being fired and saw residents take cover. “I saw blood dripping from Rambau and she fell on the ground,” said a resident, Andrew Menyoko. According to Menyoko a stray bullet that was fired by a Somali tuck-shop owner who was disgruntled because members of the community told him to close his shop shot Rambau. Rambau was wounded above her waist while she was carrying her baby son, Collins on her back. Residents carried Rambau to the street while waiting for an ambulance to arrive. Fortunately Ramabu’s son was unharmed.

According to Jeff Ramo hlala, chairman of the Gauteng Civic Association, told Rekord they went to the Somali shopkeeper to find out why he had opened his shop, when he was instructed to close his shop. “Residents of Jeffsville instructed all shop keepers to close their stores, as there was a petition that was to be taken to the Department of Human Settlements because residents demanded better houses. When we found the shop open and not closed as we asked, we started to question him,” said Ramohlala. Ramohlala further mentioned that the Somali shopkeeper pulled a firearm and began shooting and one of the bullets fatally wounded Rambau. The Somali male arrested by the Atteridgeville police has been charged with murder and possession of an unlicenced firearm. According to Atteridgeville police station spokesperson, Captain Thomas Mufumadi, the Somali suspect is also an illegal immigrant and appeared in court last week on Thursday.

COMMENT

Police are on the alert after several incidences of xenophobic violence took place last week in Laudium, Atteridgeville, Soshanguve and Alexandra. Rumours are afloat that more violence is planned for this week. This calls to mind the terrible scenes of xenophobic violence we experienced in May 2008, leaving 70 people dead. Now as a new bout of protests has reared its head, South Africans are worried about how to avoid a repeat of the horrific violence. In the dictionary the term ‘xenophobia’ is defined as a hatred or fear of foreigners. It describes xenophobia as an ‘attitude’ rather than an ‘action’ or ‘practice’. For South Africa this definition needs to be rewritten. Here xenophobia can’t be separated from violence and physical abuse. This hostility against foreigners is explained in terms of limited resources. In the post-apartheid epoch a realisation that delivery is not immediate has meant that discontent and indignation are at their peak. People are more conscious of their deprivation than ever before. This is the ideal situation for a phenomenon like xenophobia to take root and flourish and to find a scapegoat. In November we will be celebrating the National Day of Tolerance and government and the Tshwane metro must commit themselves to listen and find solutions to people’s concerns and to condemn looting and attacks on foreigners under the guise of service delivery protests.

Coming of age Paradox Pless wishes he was born in another era. This rushed modern life of the Stone Age is not for sissies. When someone said that this year, julle gaan klippe kou, they meant it literally. He knows his history well and is aware that there were eras when living was slow and easy and one could spend one’s day strolling around a beautiful garden and keep oneself busy by naming animals. How difficult can that be? How many times can one name a ‘lion’ a ‘lion’ or a ‘tiger’ a ‘tiger’? One guy tried to make it interesting by bringing some variation into it, by naming one a ‘Bengal tiger’ the other an ‘Indian tiger’ or ‘white tiger’. But his wife said he was being racist. Even then there was trouble brewing in paradise. The wife was having an affair with a real snake of a guy who was peddling fruit and drugs and who persuaded her to try boom. But the present age was getting to him. The company he worked for, Stone Implements Inc was starting to retrench people because they could not afford to keep up with new technology. Iron implements were all the rage now and countries, like China, were starting to dump iron on their market. The new-world rulers, the Neanderthals, were trying to change the name of Pless’ city to Gondwanaland. Imagine bringing up his two hundred children without a sense of history and permanency and forever moving about like a continent adrift. Things around him were changing quickly. If you took too long to make a decision you might be in for a surprise. Like the leader of the Gondwana Youth League. He and his followers decided

Where he got his ancestors from, nobody knows, because the present generation was only the sixth generation of people on earth. Anyway, the morning he and his followers arrived at the piece of land it was gone. It was taken away by the continental drift and was already a piece of another continent. Well, he could not sit around being depressed and longing for the good old days. He has to get up and wake his wives and kids. The kids must get ready for the Sterkfontein Primary School and wives for hunting, even if it is only for bargains. O, for the sweet life of being a bachelor or the time when he only had one wife, Mrs Pless. She however eloped with a guy called Dr Raymond Dart after he unearthed some secrets about her. He hated this cultural thing. (Republished and reworked because of popular demand.)

Scammers hit again Johnny Mynhardt from Annlin writes: I was a victim of this scam and feel obligated to prevent this from happening to other residents. On Saturday afternoon a white pickup with a couple of compost bags on the back stopped in front of my house. The driver said he noticed that my grass had some grey patches and asked if they could fix it up with compost and fertilizer. I asked him the price and he said it was R85 for a 50kg bag and they will do all the work. I also asked how many bags would be needed and this is where the scam starts. He estimated two to five bags. We agreed and I tended to my dogs for five minutes. When I returned they were busy raking the fertilizer over the grass. In the corner lay a heap of empty fertilizer bags. I asked about the empty bags and he said

Wat sien jy as jy na die kruis kyk? Ek doen verlede week personeelop leiding by ’n skool vir serebraal gestremdes.

they had emptied 28 bags on my lawn. That supposedly happened in a period of five minutes. I checked the pick-up beforehand and noticed around ten bags full of compost, they obviously had additional empty bags in the vehicle and produced it while I was distracted. They charged me R2 380. Before I paid, I also requested a receipt and noticed the cell number of a previous client. I phoned the client, a resident from Garsfontein and he immediately warned me that he was a victim of this scam just hours before. In his case they wanted him to pay for 40 bags. That amount of bags could not even fit on the vehicle. As I was phoning the local police, the men drove away. In the end, I only agreed to pay for ten bags, but I feel residents should be warned. From their receipt book it seems as if they are very successful.

Waiting list for tonsil operations cleared Natalie Grobler

President Jacob Zuma listens attentively as the process is explained to him at the new SABS labs.

President opens lab A new state of the art South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) laboratory was opened in the leafy suburb of Groenkloof last week. President Jacob Zuma together with the Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Rob Davies, opened the lab. The laboratory provides testing, inspection and certification services for chemicals, pharmaceuticals, textiles, clothing and footwear products. The new laboratory will help South African manufacturers meet local and international quality and safety requirements. SABS CEO, Dr Bonakele Mehlomakulu, was proud to announce the benefit of the new lab.

“The new laboratory is a tremendous boost to our testing and product certification capabilities and exactly what we need to keep up with the needs of our economy. It will support our export sector and enhance requisite testing in the manufacturing sector,” he said. The new facility puts the organisation in a stronger position to support industry development and facilitate economic growth through supporting its customers to become more agile and competitive in their respective market sectors. This also includes support for growth of the emerging small, medium and micro enterprise (SMME) sector that need quality assurance service to supply larger corporations and government.

The entire waiting list at the Steve Biko Academic Hospital for the removal of tonsils for the past three years, have been cleared. This comes after Mediclinic joined forces with the Gauteng Department of Health and Social Development and Steve Biko to perform 60 tonsillectomies on public sector patients at Mediclinic Medforum. Sixty tonsillectomies were performed over the past two weeks on patients who came via Steve Biko without any cost to the state or to themselves. “This joint venture is part of our tiered CSI platform, of which tier one comprises partnering with public hospitals to provide access to quality healthcare to a broader section of our society,” said Dr Nkaki Matlala, government and industry affairs executive of Mediclinic. He said that despite their willingness to support projects they are sometimes met with red tape and indifferences when they try to do so. He added that Mediclinic supports the principal of delivering cost-effective healthcare to South Africans and believes this can be achieved through a joint effort between the public and private healthcare sectors. “It is important to remember that some of the problems facing the private and

public sector are common and can only be overcome by working together. The severe shortage of healthcare professionals affects both sectors and will remain a critical obstacle,” he said. Member of the Executive Committee for Health and Social Development, Ntombi Mekgwe, said the partnership they sealed last week marks a bond that will benefit residents of Pretoria and surrounding areas. “In many instances private healthcare providers are viewed as people who have misused healthcare by chasing profits, but the fact that Mediclinic approached Steve Biko with an offer to help reduce the backlog points to their responsiveness to the acute needs of our residents,” she said. She said the intervention already brought relief to 60 patients who have had their tonsils removed at the Mediforum hospital at the cost of Mediclinic. “I do not have to regale you with complications resulting from untreated tonsils but it’s safe to say they are more costly to the health system, as they include among others, dehydration, kidney failure and pharyngitis,” she said. She added that the procedure would enable the patients to lead normal lives without being subjected to pain and discomfort when swallowing. “For this I commend the management of Steve Biko for not hesitating to grab such an opportunity for partnership when it was presented to them,” she said.

pupils, those in the workforce and many others. “Poor vision hampers pupils to learn effectively, those in the work force are unable to remain economical productive and the elderly cannot maintain their independence. Everyone’s quality of life is affected,” said Matsoso. She congratulated the Pretoria Eye Institute for selecting the theme, Delivering Eye Care to the Communities, which was chosen by South Africa for the 2011 Eye Care Awareness Month and World Sight Day activities, in celebration of World Sight Day. Matsoso mentioned that cataracts, glaucoma, childhood blindness, diabetic retinopathy and refractive errors are the six causes of blindness. She added that 80% of all blindness is preventable. “Primary prevention includes health education, immunisation, maternal child health services and safety promotion. It comprises a major component of primary health care,” she said. It seems the private sector is also hands on in giving vision to the community. From October 10 to 14, the Pretoria Eye Institute performed cataract surgery on 400 needy patients. The referral was based on patients that are not on medical aid and are pensioners. A large number of referrals were from the local, provincial and academic hospitals. Dr Jacobus Pauw, chairperson of the organising committee of the Pretoria Eye Institute, thanked members of the committee and the staff who played various roles to make the project a success.

Aobakwe Masehla (5) is one of the 60 patients who underwent tonsillectomies during the past two weeks at the Mediforum hospital to decrease the backlog of tonsillitis operations at Steve Biko Academic Hospital.

Changing the face of Facebook Maselaelo Seshotli

While many people use Facebook to slander the reputation of others or to mainly brag about being ‘fly’ and ‘on the move’, some people like Arthur Themba Ngwezi uses the site for meaningful purposes. He is a young man residing in Atteridgeville who has devoted his life to spreading the word of God. The 20-year-old Ngwezi uses youthful resources or platforms such as social networks, one of which is Facebook, to reach young people and adults to encourage them with words of wisdom. He soothes their hearts and minds when they feel low and encourages fellow Facebook friends to lead a life of truth, honesty, peace, love and faith, never forgetting to walk in the light of the almighty Father. “Many have turned the social network into an online personal diary where they share their most personal information about their families, friendships and relationship issues which actually belong outside social networks,” said Grace Mokatse, a young woman who feels that people should not publish their personal details on the social site. Ngwezi, however, has turned the social site into a tool for good. “Facebook is a place where old friends can re-unite and new friends and family can share their memories and jokes, a place to share pictures and mingle with cyber friends.

Arthur Themba Ngwezi uses Facebook to spread the word of God.

People need empowerment to achieve their goals and go forward in life and that empowerment lies in God,” said Ngwezi. Ngwezi said most of the people he grew up with are often amazed by his words and the young man he has become while others are touched and inspired by his strong faith in the heavenly Father. Ngwezi said the harshest comment he has yet to receive would be no comment at all. He also mentioned that many young people find themselves wanting to belong or fit in with the expectations of a specific group norm, to such a degree that they forget their upbringing and believes. They start losing track of their goals and purpose in life and eventually lose their true sense of being.

REKORD WESNUUS VRYDAG 28 OKTOBER 2011

Albei kunstenaars gebruik olieverf as medium. Navrae: Van Vuuren by 074-432-0370.

Viljee Maritz en Ben Kruger in My pa dink hy’s Elvis.

Experts believe that planning for a longer, healthier life is no longer an option in the 21st century. According to a report published by Grey Advertising and Sweeney Research, babies born between 1946 and 1964 are still rewriting the rule book on how to live out their golden years, often planning a second or ‘encore career’. Carol Weaving, top South African marketer and managing director of Thebe Exhibitions and Projects, said the market is responding to the reality, as retired citizens have significant buying power and are an economic force in their own right. Research conducted by the University of Cape Town’s Unilever Institute and their research partner Synovate, estimates that 1,9 million South Africans older than 40 years and classified between the living standards measure of seven to ten have a combined income of R300-billion. The first South African retirement expo, presented by Century Property Developments, will be held at the Coca-Cola Dome in Johannesburg from October 28 to 30. On October 29 Grey Power will present a half-day seminar titled Creating ageing for seniors, which will include strategies for wellness and longevity to retired citizens. Visitors to the expo will receive practical tips and advice on aspects such as discount and benefits for retirees. Tickets are available at Computicket or at the expo.

Proteas val vas in wedstryd Koos Venter

The Pretoria Military Volleyball Club (PMVC) celebrated outstanding achievements recently. The club delivered a number of South African National Defence Force (SANDF) members who were selected for the SANDF national team, for the Gauteng North team and for the SA National Volleyball team. The club was formed in 1980 and is situated at the Airforce Gymnasium Melville Hall across from Zwartkop Airforce Base. This club is still a very competitive club within Gauteng and specifically in the Gauteng North area. PMVC was crowned the champion of the 2008 and 2010 SANDF Volleyball Championships. This year the PMVC would like to play more volleyball in Gauteng and especially in Pretoria. The club also has social volleyball days where the community can join on a weekend and play against other teams in the Pretoria area.

Hoewel hy reeds op ’n hoër vlak be-

Entries have closed for the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour 2012. Everything, however, is not lost for the sleepyheads. The Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust has announced a key departure for the 2012 Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour. They have limited individual online entries to 30 000 and have opened the remaining 5 000 to charities and corporates in bonds. One bond contains ten entries and these are allocated on a first come first

serve basis to charities and corporates who apply to the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust. The great benefit to charities that purchase bonds is that they are permitted to ‘late enter’ the names of their bond participants up until January 13, 2012, which is only eight weeks prior to the event. Participants wishing to know more about charity bonds can phone the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust on 021-6814333.

Narrow win for Arrows Matsatsantsa A Pitori left Lucas Moripe stadium disappointed on Tuesday night after Abafana Bes’thende defeated them 1-0. A man of the match performance from Collins Mbesuma saw him score the game’s only goal as Golden Arrows beat SuperSport United 1-0 in their first round Telkom Knockout clash. The first 45 minutes was characterised by two different styles of play as SuperSport controlled the possession stakes, but failed to make their dominance pay. They struggled to get behind a stubborn Arrows’ defence and were unable to create many decent chances on goal. Abafana Bes’thende on the other hand, despite only having one chance to score in the half which they took full advantage of, never looked like conceding because of the structured football their new coach, Muhsin Ertugal, has them playing. With neither side really wanting to make a mistake early on there was very little in terms of goal mouth action in the opening 20 minutes. That, however, changed in the 21st

minute when a swift passing movement from Arrows saw Siyabonga Nkosi with a great run down the right flank where he produced a good low cross into the box. Collins Mbesuma was first to react and got to the ball ahead of his marker at the front post and turned it past Ronwen Williams from only a couple yards out for 1-0. United nearly hit back three minutes later but some great goalkeeping from Helton Da Rocha kept the KZN team in the lead. The rest of the half saw United on the attack, but lack of imagination and bad passing in the final third of the field meant they went into the half-time break trailing by a goal. The home team’s only chance of the second half came in the 56th minute when a deep cross from the right wing from Bryce Moon found Anthony Laffor unmarked at the back post, but his header from six-yards out was a poor one and went wide of the target.

Two local sportsmen were part of a team consisting of three air pistol shots and their manager, who flew to Egypt recently for the Africa Shooting Championships. Francois van Tonder from Pretoria, Michael de Nysschen from Bloemfontein, Carel Smit from Randfontein and their manager, Nico Rautenbach from Pretoria, will represent South Africa at this event. Van Tonder is the most experienced shooter and has participated internationally for a number of years. He achieved many

accolades. The group hopes to achieve a team award and possibly individual medals also. Teams from all over the continent will participate in the Africa Shooting Championships. All participants will endeavour to secure qualification for the 2012 Olympic Games in London by achieving a quota place. The respective members compete regularly in all provincial championships. Enquiries: The South African Pistol Association on 012-543-2786.
