Report crimes

Stephen Selaluke

Resident enjoys sizzling summer weather This week Pretoria was in the grips of the summer’s first heatwave with the mercury rising above 30°C on most days. Emergency services advised people to stay well hydrated and out of direct sunlight. Onica Moshiga, a resident of Mamelodi East X4, beat the heat with a cool drink while appreciating the city’s Jacaranda trees that are currently in full bloom. Photo: Stephen Selaluke

The Department of Community Safety engaged with residents of Mamelodi East on issues of crime and safety last week. The Department of Community Safety, together with the Department of Home Affairs, the police and community police forum (CPF), visited Mamelodi East on October 20 in an effort to address the ongoing crime in he area. These crimes include murder, house robberies, business robberies, vehicle hijacking, domestic violence, assault due to excessive drug and alcohol use as well as nyaope that is rife. The areas visited included Mahube Valley, Stoffel Park, Victoria, Lusaka, RDP and Phomolong. Community members raised issues of not feeling safe and some commended the department, as they did not know where to report crime. According to the chairperson of the CPF, Eddie Mnguni, they

have committed themselves to work together with the community to meet their demands. “The Department of Community Safety, together with stakeholders, committed themselves to establish sustainable programmes. This includes the formation of street committees and the revival of the South African Liquor Traders Association to deal with the issue of illegal taverns, as well as liquor awareness to patrons ahead of the festive season and beyond,” said Mnguni. The Department of Home Affairs will obtain a database of all undocumented citizens as well as foreigners in the areas they visited. Residents are urged to report crime, as some of the crimes happen on their doorsteps. They are urged to be the eyes and ears of the police, who are committed to increase police visibility in the areas visited. Members of the community can report crime anonymously by phoning 10111.

March to Pretoria Ané Roux

President Jacob Zuma listens attentively as the process is explained to him at the new SABS labs.

New lab will help manufacturers A new state of the art South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) laboratory was opened in the leafy suburb of Groenkloof last week. President Jacob Zuma together with the Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Rob Davies, opened the lab. The laboratory provides testing, inspection and certification services for chemicals, pharmaceuticals, textiles, clothing and footwear products. The new laboratory will help South

African manufacturers meet local and international quality and safety requirements. SABS CEO, Dr Bonakele Mehlomakulu, was proud to announce the benefit of the new lab. “The new laboratory is a tremendous boost to our testing and product certification capabilities and exactly what we need to keep up with the needs of our economy. It will support our export sector and enhance requisite testing in the manufactu-

ring sector,” he said. The new facility puts the organisation in a stronger position to support industry development and facilitate economic growth through supporting its customers to become more agile and competitive in their respective market sectors. This also includes support for growth of the emerging small, medium and micro enterprise (SMME) sector that need quality assurance service to supply larger corporations and government.

The ANC Youth League’s (ANCYL) will march to the Union Buildings today after their original request for a night vigil was denied. During a meeting to discuss the march proceedings between the ANCYL, the Tshwane metro police, the police, the metro’s Emergency Services and the Presidency on Tuesday, it was decided that a memorandum will only be accepted today, thus making any gathering at the Union Buildings on Thursday night unlawful under the Gatherings Act of 1993. In terms of the act, an organised march may only be granted if a representative is available to accept a memorandum from complainants. The Presidency indicated that no representative will be sent and thus the permission for the night gathering was dismissed. The march for Friday was, however, approved by the metro police and will therefore continue as planned today, culminating in the handing over of a memorandum, demanding free education, the immediate abolishment of labour brokers, jobs for the youth, better housing and sanitation for informal settlement dwellers and access to water. According to the metro’s head of Community Safety, General Daniel Manganye, the city is ready for the march. Manganye told Rekord that traffic in the inner city will be affected but the metro police will make sure that motorists do not suffer as a result of the planned march. The electricity saga continues with Adriana Randall, DA spokesperson for finance, who is leading a campaign to have residents who have fallen into a dark pitfall of high electricity accounts, to find a way back into the light. “I have seen accounts where residents have been charged up to 71 days in advance. Incorporate this amount with the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) rates’ increase and you have

people who cannot pay and are stranded with no water and no electricity.”

She told Rekord that she views the advanced projections of the metro on accounts as irresponsible and unfair to residents. “In some cases where meter readers are unexpectedly locked, the metro is no longer allowing residents to submit meter readings, residents do not get any service from the metro when they query their accounts and if they are unable to pay, the metro simply cuts the services. This is not effective management, it’s a hostage situation.” During a public meeting held last week to discuss the electricity account debacle, Randall admitted that the residents’ responses had been positive and she is determined to make the metro realise the seriousness of the situation. “I have received numerous accounts from residents across Pretoria. This is to show the metro that the complaints are not isolated incidences as they insist.” She further urged residents to make contact with their ward councillors to address their high electricity accounts. “Residents will be

able to make arrangements with the metro to pay their accounts. Some simply can’t afford the full amount and we therefore urge residents to work with their ward councillors to have payment arrangements made.” Karen Meyer, DA councillor for Community Safety, said residents should consider prepaid meters as an alternative. “With prepaid electricity, residents will be able to manage their consumption, however, the only way a prepaid meter will be installed is when all accounts with the metro has been settled,” she warned. DA leader, Brandon Topham, stated that the metro had to seriously re-evaluate their customer service capabilities. He also said that in some cases the metro seemed to be willing to come to a workable solution, but that the capacity to do so was hampering their efforts. “Residents are frustrated and angry, the metro seems unfazed and simply expects residents to pay. I urge the metro to improve their consumer relations and thus their service delivery.” Rekord is still awaiting an explanation from the Tshwane Media Centre on why residents’ accounts were charged more than 31 days in advance and why residents, who’s meter boxes are padlocked, are no longer allowed to send in their own metre readings. Enquiries: Adriana Randall on 083-263-8667.

Isak Pieterson submits his electricity account as part of a campaign to have electricity accounts corrected after double readings and rate increases where passed onto residents over the past three months.

Garden project flowers in Mamelodi West Stephen Selaluke A total of 100 indigent families in Mamelodi West in ward 6 recently received agricultural starter packs for taking part in the Community Food Gardens projects. The garden project is an initiative by the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (GDARD) that was launched on October 12. The starter packs include fertilisers and garden equipment and were presented to families by ward 6’s councillor, Joyce Sibanyoni. The handing over was held at Mamelodi West police station. Community Food Gardens projects was introduced in various townships in Gauteng by GDARD to ensure that they produce quality products suitable for sale to residents. The project encourages communities to use available space in backyards, school gardens, local clinics and in open fields to produce vegetables. Many communities have come together to form these community gardens where they produce to sell and feed their families. GDARD provided the families with financial and technical assistance and extension officers ensure that communities are able to sustain the projects themselves.

According to Sibanyoni, representatives from GDARD mandated her together with other Mamelodi councillors, to identify indigent families in their respective wards to take part in the project as part of the department’s poverty alleviation programme. The families were identified and appointed a delegation of three community members to coordinate the project in my ward. The families were identified and attended two workshops where they were trained about the basics of establishing a garden as well as how to make use of agricultural equipment, said Sibanyoni. She added that the department encouraged participants to commit themselves to engage in a five-day voluntary community work before they could award them with the starter packs. The families did voluntary services at institutions like clinics, police stations, schools and at public places, where they volunteered there time and services. It was after such voluntary work that the participants were rewarded, explained Sibanyoni. Sibanyoni expressed her gratitude to the department on behalf of her ward and encourages participants to pass the skills they have acquired from the projects to their fellow neighbours and Maphori Mabelane can’t wait to start her small backyard food garden. friends.

New project empowers youth with life skills Stephen Selaluke

Onthatile Sethlago from one of the primary schools attended the launch of Life’s a Ball Imbewu project on October 25.

As part of ploughing back to the community Thabo Sefolosha, a Swiss national basketball player, whose father is from Mamelodi launched Life’s a Ball project on October 25. Life’s a Ball Imbewu project is an organisation from Switzerland that went into partnership with Thabo Sefolosha. Together with the Imbewu organisation Thabo’s wish was to plough back something for the children of his township of origin a combining sport, education and life skills. The Imbewu organisation went into partnership with Altus Sports, which are based in Pretoria to manage the project for three years, as they liked the Life’s a Ball programme of Altus Sports. Imbewu has, therefore, decided to carry on with the idea of implementing a project in Mamelodi with the objective of giving children and the youth the support

they need to grow as children on secure ground and coached by well-trained coaches acting like role models. According to Gert ‘Mkhulu’ Potgieter, from Altus Sports, the organisation has a passion for people and Life’s a Ball project addresses HIV/Aids, the environment, Olympics and read and write educational programmes for primary school pupils. “These goals are reached through sporting skills and life skills,” said Potgieter. “Unemployment youth sport leaders in Mamelodi were trained in the Life’s a Ball programme who are now running the programme at the Rethabile sports ground since the beginning of September,” said Potgieter. Pupils under the leadership of youth sport leaders attended the circuit training system with eight stations of basic sporting skills, such as soccer, hockey, netball, basketball cricket, volleyball and life skill values.

The passion for art and signwriting drives him Stephen Selaluke

Obi Mahlangu said there is no other job for him except art and signwriting. The 41-year-old Obi said his passion for art and signwriting started while he was at primary school. He started by drawing cartoons and also helped his classmates with their drawing work. One of the teachers saw his drawings and advised him to attend Saturday drawing classes at the YMCA in 1984. Since, he has never looked back. In 1986 he entered a drawing competition and won second prize. He was the youngest artist in the group. He bought art materials with the prize money.

In 1990 he joined the Pretoria Art, Music and Drama Association and had his first exhibition among the top artists in the country. He was still the youngest artist among the group. Obi said he survives by doing his artwork at spaza’s, crèches, painting containers and some of his work can be found at railway stations in Pretoria. He tried looking for a different job but always returned to his artwork. “My main goal in life is to inspire young artists, especially in Mamelodi, to take their work seriously,” said Obi. Obi believes that young artists can make a living with art. Enquiries: Obi Mahlangu on 074-357-1392.

Writing exams is one of the most difficult things to do because it requires a lot of hard work. When we started our exams, my mother made sure that I eat something before I went to write. If there is one thing that you shouldn’t do, is to go into and exam room on an empty stomach. Before you leave, eat something healthy and on your way eat fruit. Guided by His spirit Then the Spirit entered me when He spoke to me, and set me on my feet and I heard Him who spoke to me (Ezekiel 2:2). When Jesus was about to go and be with the Father, He promised the disciples the Holy Spirit who will lead them to all truth. Jesus emphasised that He should go for the Helper (Holy Spirit) to come. Jesus made it clear that when the Spirit comes He will not speak on His own authority but what He hears He will speak (John 16:714). There are many advantages of having the Spirit in us. We know that in His presence there is liberty (2 Corinthians 3:17). The MP4-12c deserves to be called a supercar, as 200km/h is reached in 9,8 seconds or 8,9 if the car is fitted with Corsa tyres, which will play an essential role in reaching the top speed of 330km/h a bit faster. Supercar manufacturers lost unecessary weight that hinders the achievement of maximum performance. Not only did the acceleration improve, but other performance improvements include braking 100 to 0km/h in a distance of 30,5m, handling and fuel efficiency releasing only 279g/km, which just might save you from having to pay CO² emission tax. The whole weight shedding is made possible by using a carbon fibre MonoCell structure. Fuel figures stand at 11,7l per 100km, releasing only 279g/km of CO². The McLaren is powered by a 3,8l V8 engine that boasts 441kw/h, with torque outputs of 600Nm at 3 000rpm right up to 7 000rpm. The engine will be put up against German rivals Audi R8 GT, Porsche 911 Turbo PDK and Japanese Godzilla Nissan Skyline

GT-R, not forgetting the Godzilla killer Lexus LFA, as seen on YouTube. All rivals have between 368kW (Porsche 911 Turbo PDK) to 441kW (McLaren

MP4-12c). According to specs, the McLaren is the most favourable with the fastest 0 to 100 in 3,3 seconds, that is if you are rolling on

standard tyres. Overall, the McLaren was smartly built, with high mounted exhausts and every single component designed from scratch.

Catch Mamelodi Sundowns against Black Leopards for an Absa Premiership soccer match on Sunday, October 30 at Loftus stadium. Match starts at 15:30.

Sundowns kicked out Moroka Swallows dumped Mamelodi Sundowns out of the Telkom Knockout at Dobsonville stadium on Saturday evening, claiming a stunning 3-0 thanks to goals from Lefa Tsutsulupa, former Brazilians player, Lerato Chabangu and Siyabonga Nomvethe. Sundowns dominated the encounter in terms of possession and the number of scoring chances they created, but a failure to capitalise on their opportunities allowed the Birds to keep up their excellent cup record against Sundowns. Moroka Swallows has not lost any of their last ten cup ties against the team from Mamelodi, heading back as far as 1989. Sundowns created the better chances in the first half and should have taken the lead early in the 15th minute. Swallows goalkeeper, Greg Etafia, spilled a low shot from Mabhuti Khenyeza and Katlego Mphela ran onto the rebound, but to Etafia’s credit he got straight up to close down the Bafana Bafana striker and make up for his fumble. Etafia was certainly the busier of the two goalkeepers and on 31 minutes he had to make a fingertip save from a dipping longrange drive by Hlompho Kekana. The Brazilians enjoyed the lion’s share of possession and won a bevy of corner kicks, but the Birds’ well-organised defence as well the occasional intervention from Etafia kept the visitors at bay. On the 37th minute, against the run of play, Swallows took

the lead through captain Lefa Tsutsulupa. The dreadlocked midfielder controlled a great ball from James Mayinga on his chest, turned and hit a left-footed volley that squeezed under the body of Calvin Marlin before finding the back of the net. Sundowns created the first genuine opening of the first half, with Kekana handing Mphela a clear sight of goal, but a prohibitive angle was always going to make it tough for ‘Killer’ to beat Etafia and the Nigerian goalkeeper. On 56 minutes Sundowns came close to a bizarre equaliser as Elias Pelembe found himself oneon-one with Etafia, but again the goalkeeper made a brave block. He lost sight of the ball, however, and Pelembe was able to get a second away that had to be cleared off the line by Ashraf Hendricks and an ugly scramble in the penalty ensued. Seconds later Kekana had a glaring chance to score his first goal for ‘Downs but he somehow skewed his shot wide of the target. It really seemed to be a matter of ‘when’ rather than ‘if’ the visitors would bring themselves back on level terms. Yet, on the 65th minute, the Birds extended their lead. Marlin completely missed a cross from a corner kick and former Sundowns attacker Lerato Chabangu arrived at the far post to steer home a shot that put his side 2-0 up and on course for a place in the quarterfinals. That was confirmed in the 83rd minute. Substitute Oscar

Since they have joined the Mamelodi Society Care for the Aged (Masca) Gogo Soccer Club’s health has improved a lot. Today the senior citizens of Mamelodi would like to encourage more senior citizens to join the team or start exercising more often as it is good for their health. Bombi Mkhonwane (65), one of the senior players of Masca Gogo Soccer Club, said before she joined the club last year in October she had aches all over

her body but today she is strong, healthy and fit. Mkhonwane said when she joined the club she weighed 114kg and now she weighs 96kg. “The team does not have training equipment but by joining the team has changed many peoples lives, especially those who had problems with high blood pressure and sugar diabetes,” says Mkhonwane. The team trains three times a week from Mondays to Wednesdays from 08:30 until 11:00 at Muckleneuk sports ground. The team consists of 15 players

but we need more players to join the team. Sarah Shonisani founder of the team said the team was formed to keep them healthy and strong. “We need more players, especially those above 60 years of age, to join the team as well as taking care of their health. The team is doing well so far and the spirit is high with every training session. The team desperately needs a medical kit, soccer jerseys and soccer balls as well as training equipment,” said Shonisani. Enquiries: Sarah Shonisani on 072-402-6052.

The remaining quarterfinalists will be determined from further matches on Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

tegrated service to the community and all people affected by cancer,” said Ras. Money was raised through selling T-shirts and entries for the fun walk. After the walk, contestants received medals and certificates for their participation. Morula Sun’s general manager, Jennifer Bokwa, encouraged everyone to take care of themselves regardless of age and gender. “This is a disease that can affect all women and the more money we raise through campaigns like this, the more Cansa can do to assist them,” she said.

Walk in aid of cancer The second annual Morula Sun Walk for Life breast cancer campaign was held on Saturday. It was a 5km walk and a 10km walk or run. With October being national cancer month, Cansa worked together with Morula Sun to raise money. Kagiso Hlongwane, marketing assistant of Morula Sun, said they were pleased with the turnout and response from the people. The aim of the walk was to educate residents about cancer and how it can be detected at an early stage. “One in 35 women in South Africa will be diagnosed with cervical cancer. This is why such initiatives are important to create continuous awareness. Having regular checkups can detect early diagnosis,” said Adri Ras, regional manager of Cansa. The walk also encouraged people to have healthy living habits through exercise. “Cansa’s purpose is to lead the fight against cancer in South Africa by offering a unique and in-
