Polisie aangekla

kampioen verdedig titel 16

“Ek was op pad kerk toe, toe my seun my bel en vir my sê dat daar polisie by ons woonstel in Riverside

My kinders sal nie my geld sonder my toestemming neem nie.

The electricity saga continues with Adriana Randall, DA spokesperson for finance, who is leading a campaign to have residents who have fallen into a dark pitfall of high electricity accounts, to find a way back into the light. “I have seen accounts where residents have been charged up to 71 days in advance. Incorporate this amount with the National Energy Regula tor of South Africa (Nersa) rates’ increase and you have people who cannot pay and are stranded with no electricity.” She said that she sees the ad vanced projections of the metro on accounts as irresponsible and unfair to residents. “The metro is no longer allowing residents to submit meter readings, residents do not get any service from the metro when they query their accounts and if they are unable to pay, the metro simply cuts the services. It’s a hostage situation.” During a public meeting held last week to discuss the electricity account debacle, Randall said she is determined to make the metro realise the serious ness of the situation. “I have received numerous accounts from residents across Pretoria. This is to show the metro that the complaints are not isolated incidences as they insist.”

She further urged residents to make contact with their ward councillors to address their high electricity accounts. “Residents will be able to make arrangements with the metro to pay their accounts. Some simply can’t afford the full amount and we therefore urge residents to work with their ward councillors to have payment arrangements made.” Karen Meyer, DA council lor for Community Safety, said residents should consider pre paid meters as an alternative. “With prepaid electricity residents will be able to manage their consumption, however, the only way a prepaid meter will be installed is when all ac counts with the metro has been settled,” she warned. DA leader, Brandon Topham, stated that the metro had to seri ously re-evaluate their customer service capabilities. He also said that in some cases the metro seemed to be willing to come to a workable solution, but that the capacity to do so was hampering their efforts. Rekord is still awaiting an explanation from the Tshwane Media Centre on why residents’ accounts were charged more than 31 days in advance and why residents are no longer allowed to send in their own metre readings. Hospitals join hands Transport Minister

halts all roadworks

Natalie Grobler The entire waiting list at the Steve Biko Academic hospital for the removal of tonsils for the past three years, have been cleared. This comes after Mediclinic joined forces with the Gauteng Department of Health and Social Development and Steve Biko to perform 60 tonsillectomies on public sector patients at Mediclinic Medforum. Sixty tonsillectomies were performed over the past two weeks on patients who came via Steve Biko without any cost to the state or to themselves. “This joint venture is part of our tiered CSI platform, of which tier one comprises partnering with public hospitals to provide access to quality healthcare to a broader section of our society,” said Dr Nkaki Matlala, government and industry affairs executive of Mediclinic. He said that despite their willingness to carry on such projects they are sometimes met with red tape and indifferences when they try to do so. He added that Mediclinic supports the principal of delivering cost-ef fective healthcare for South Africans and believes this can be achieved through a joint effort between the public and private healthcare sectors. “It is important to remember that some of the problems facing the private and public sector are common and can only be overcome by working together. The severe shortage of healthcare professionals affects both sectors and will remain a critical ob stacle,” he said. Member of the Executive Committee for Health and Social Development, Ntombi Mekgwe, said the partnership they sealed last week marks a bond that will benefit residents of Pretoria and surrounding areas. “In many instances private health pro viders are viewed as people who have mis used health care, by chasing profits, but the fact that Mediclinic approached Steve Biko with an offer to help reduce the backlog points to their responsiveness to the acute needs of our residents,” she said. She said the intervention already brought

relief to 60 patients who have had their tonsils removed at the Mediforum hospital at the cost of Mediclinic. “I do not have to regale you with com plications resulting from untreated tonsils but it’s safe to say they are more costly to the health system, as they include among others, dehydration, kidney failure and pharyngitis,” she said. She added that the procedure would en able the patients to lead normal lives with out being subjected to pain and discomfort when swallowing. “For this I commend the management of Steve Biko for not hesitating to grab such an opportunity for partnership when it was presented to them,” she said.

The Minister of Transport, Sibusiso Ndebele, has called for an immediate halt to any further roadworks on Gauteng’s freeways until the toll issue has been resolved. Nedebele released a statement on Octo ber 23 saying that although the first phase of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Plan has delivered good road infrastructure, it was an expensive exercise that has drawn sharp critique from the public and that consultation is the only way forward. “All spheres of government should be part of a consultation process with all affected parties, consumers in the main. Good infrastructure is a necessity for a better future for our country, but this re quirement must not leave our people even poorer,” said Ndebele. The Justice Project South Africa (JPSA) is accusing Ndebele of holding Gauteng motorists hostage after his statement to stop any further road maintenance works until the toll issue has been resolved. Howard Dembovsky, national chairman of the JPSA, said the organisation is shocked with what they describe as Ndebele’s lack of foresight. “The first phase of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Plan has not been completed yet, unless the first phase only included the N1 and R21 freeways. The N12 and N3 freeways in Johannesburg are in such a shocking demolished state of dilapidation that they constantly cause crashes and daily gridlock traffic. Calling a halt to their rein statement as usable freeways is little short of insanity,” Dembovsky said. “There is a vast difference between calling a halt to planned tolling and calling

a halt to the construction of roads, which have been demolished by the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) and its contractors.” Dembovsky also said that the minister should not resort to measures that may be seen as punishment tactics. “One of the most prevalent factors in road fatalities is poor engineering and if the minister thinks he can punish motorists for being angry with his and Sanral’s intent to profit from tolling freeways, he is mistaken.” He added that the answer to implementing and maintaining roads infrastructure in South Africa lies in the coming up with workable solutions that would benefit the public and from spending money collected from existing taxation and possibly even reasonable tolling on the roads infrastruc ture. “There is nothing wrong with saying: Minister Ndebele said all these processes, including a consultative process initiated by the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, should be allowed to reach their logical conclu sions to ensure that all parties concerned and their respective views are brought on board. Blackmailing motorists by leaving current road construction projects unfinished, is completely unacceptable.” The JPSA has also warned that Ndebele and Sanral might open themselves to legal action from motorists. “The matter of tolls can be properly discussed and resolved. Failing this, Nde bele and Sanral are lining themselves up for legal action and possibly even criminal charges for destroying what roads were in place before the project started,” Dembovsky said.

Zuma suspends Cele and two ministers must go Ron Sibiya President Jacob Zuma has proven his commitment to fight corruption in government when he fired two cabinet ministers and sus pended the police commissioner. President Zuma showed both Minister of Co-operative Govern ance, Sicelo Shiceka and Public Works Minister, Gwen MahlanguNkabinde, the door. He further suspended the

President Jacob Zuma.

National Police Commissioner, General Bheki Cele. Public Protector, Thuli Mandon sela, accused Shiceka of wasting taxpayers’ money on overseas travel and hotel accommodation and lying about it when called to account. Mahlangu-Nkabinde was implicated in the dodgy R1,78-bil lion police headquarters leasing deal, which Mandonsela described as unlawful. In the special media briefing held at the Union Buildings on Monday, Zuma announced that the Minister of Public Service and Administration, Richard Baloyi, has been appointed Minister of Cooperative Governance and Tradi tional Affairs. Deputy Minister for Rural Development and Land Reform, Thembelani Thulas Nxesi, was ap pointed the new Minister of Public Works and the department will no longer have a deputy minister. Zuma decided to suspend the National Police Commissioner from duty with immediate effect, pending the outcome of an enquiry. During the period of suspen sion, Cele is entitled to his full salary, allowances, privileges and benefits. Major General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi will act as National Police Commissioner. The cabinet reshuffling has further seen Deputy Minister for Performance Moni toring and Evaluation, Dina Pule, appointed Minister of Communica tions and ANC Member of Parlia ment, Thembisa Stella Ndabeni has

been appointed the Deputy Minis ter of Communications. The Minister of Communi cations, Roy Padayachie, has taken over the Public Service and Administration portfolio and Deputy Minister of Communica tions, Obed Bapela, was appointed Deputy Minister in the Presidency for Performance Monitoring and Evaluation. The Deputy Minister of Public Works, Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu, is now the Deputy Minister for Women, Children and Persons with Disability. Chairperson of the portfolio committee on Co-operative Gov ernance and Traditional Affairs, Lechesa Tsenoli, has been appoint ed as Deputy Minister for Rural Development and Land Reform. “I have also appointed a com mission to investigate the arms deal. The esteemed members include Justice Willie Seriti, Judge of the Supreme Court of Appeal, Justice Willem van der Merwe, Deputy Judge President of the North Gauteng High Court and Justice Francis Legodi, Judge of the North Gauteng High Court,” said Zuma He added that Justice Seriti would chair the commission, which is expected to complete its work within two years. Most of the opposition parties have welcomed Zuma’s cabinet reshuffling but also criticised him for taking too long before acting against corruption.

Youth marches Gavin Emmanuel and Ané Roux Traffic will literally come to a standstill in the Pretoria CBD as thousands of disgruntled youths will march to the Union Buildings on Thursday and Fri day to make their voice heard about unemployment and free education for the youth. The ANC Youth League (ANCYL) has set aside Octo ber 27 and 28 as the official dates to roll out mass action to strategic centres of power in South Africa. On Thursday ANCYL will lead mass action and protest to the Chamber of Mines to demand the nationalisation of mines and equal share in the country’s mineral resources. From the Chamber of Mines, a march to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in Sandton will take place to demand an equal share in the country’s wealth. The mass action will go to the Union Buildings for a night vigil, which will culminate in the handing over of a memorandum, demanding free education, the immediate abolishment of labour brokers, jobs for the youth, better hous ing and sanitation for informal settlement dwellers and access to water. According to the Tshwane head of Community Safety, General Daniel Manganye, the city is ready for the march. A final meeting with all the role players of the planned march will be held later this week. “We had several meet

ings, but I do not want to dis close anything at the moment,” said Manganye. Manganye said that traffic in the inner city will be affected but the Tshwane metro police will make sure that motorists do not suffer as a result of the planned march. According to media reports the league is expecting 5 000 people to participate in the march and to ensure a peaceful march, there would also be 1 000 youth league marshals, 500 police and private security company members to ensure there are no violent disruptions. “The ANC leader ship told us to look out for agent provocateurs. We might be infiltrated by people with ill intentions,” ANCYL president, Julius Malema was reported saying. He also remained defiant regarding the R1-mil lion march fee charged by the municipalities, saying that the poor will not pay for their economic freedom. The planned march seems to have caused a rift in the ruling tri-alliance of the ANC, Cosatu with the SA Communist Party with its leader, Dr Blade Nzimande, its youth league and Nathi Mtheth wa, Minister of Police, strongly condemning the march. They are accusing the ANCYL of playing on the feelings of the poor. Cosatu is supporting the march out of principal according its general secretary, Zwelinzima Vavi. Motorists are urged to avoid the roads around the Union Buildings in Pretoria.

Ek doen verlede week personeelop leiding by ’n skool vir serebraal gestrem des.

’n Vrou wat haar as me.

Mike and Daleen Burt from Capital Park write: We want to thank Rekord for the article that they published about the ‘Hell house’ in Malherbe Street. It raised a tremendous awareness among the residents in the area and the response to help clean up was fantastic.

We want to thank DA councillor of ward 58, Sam Moimane, for bringing Rekord to the house and for his input and help to resolve the problem. Thank you to Wonder boompoort police officers for their moral support and the Tshwane metro and Waste Management for supplying material and equipment to help clean up the house.

A resident from Villieria writes: I want to thank the brave black man that risked his life to aid my daughter during a hijack attempt on October 12. My daughter, who was on her way home, stopped at the traffic light in Boom Street when a man reached through the window, brandished a knife, grabbed the ignition key and demanded her cell phone. A huge black man, presumably from the taxi behind her, came to her aid and over

powered the assailant. He said to the man ‘it is you people that give us a bad name’. He asked if my daughter was okay and if she had lost anything. She told him her car key was missing. He retrieved the key and handed it to her. Needless to say my daughter was very upset, grateful to be alive and failed to take much notice of her rescuer or where he came from. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Thank you for article

COMMENT

Police are on the alert after several incidences of xenophobic violence took place last week in Laudium, Atterid geville, Soshanguve and Alexandra. Rumours are afloat that more violence is planned for this week. This calls to mind the terrible scenes of xenophobic violence we experienced in May 2008, leaving 70 people dead. Now as a new bout of protests has reared its head, South Afri cans are worried about how to avoid a repeat of the horrific violence. In the dictionary the term ‘xeno phobia’ is defined as a hatred or fear of foreigners. It describes xenophobia as an ‘attitude’ rather than an ‘action’ or ‘practice’. For South Africa this definition needs to be rewritten. Here xenophobia can’t be separated from violence and physical abuse. This hos tility against foreigners is explained in terms of limited resources. In the post-apartheid epoch a realisa tion that delivery is not immediate has meant that discontent and indignation are at their peak. People are more conscious of their deprivation than ever before. This is the ideal situation for a phenomenon like xenophobia to take root and flourish and to find a scape goat. In November we will be celebra ting the National Day of Tolerance and government and the Tshwane metro must commit themselves to listen and find solutions to people’s concerns and to condemn looting and attacks on foreigners under the guise of service delivery protests.

REKORD MOOT FRIDAY OCTOBER 28, 2011

Coming of age Paradox Pless wishes he was born in another era. This rushed modern life of the Stone Age is not for sissies. When someone said that this year, julle gaan klippe kou, they meant it literally. He knows his history well and is aware that there were eras when living was slow and easy and one could spend one’s day strolling around a beautiful garden and keep oneself busy by naming animals. How difficult can that be? How many times can one name a ‘lion’ a ‘lion’ or a ‘tiger’ a ‘tiger’? One guy tried to make it interesting by bringing some variation into it, by naming one a ‘Bengal tiger’ the other an ‘Indian tiger’ or ‘white tiger’. But his wife said he was being racist. Even then there was trouble brew ing in paradise. The wife was having an affair with a real snake of a guy who was peddling fruit and drugs and who persuaded her to try boom. But the present age was getting to him. The company he worked for, Stone Implements Inc was starting to retrench people because they could not afford to keep up with new technology. Iron implements were all the rage now and countries, like China, were starting to dump iron on their market. The new-world rulers, the Neander thals, were trying to change the name of Pless’ city to Gondwanaland. Imagine bringing up his two hundred children without a sense of history and perma nency and forever moving about like a continent adrift. Things around him were changing quickly. If you took too long to make a decision you might be in for a surprise. Like the leader of the Gondwana Youth League. He and his followers decided to claim and expropriate a piece of land, which he claimed was ancestral land.

7

P nch of salt Fred Boshoff

Where he got his ancestors from, nobody knows, because the present generation was only the sixth generation of people on earth. Anyway, the morning he and his followers arrived at the piece of land it was gone. It was taken away by the continental drift and was already a piece of another continent. Well, he could not sit around being depressed and longing for the good old days. He has to get up and wake his wives and kids. The kids must get ready for the Sterkfontein Primary School and wives for hunting, even if it is only for bargains. O, for the sweet life of being a bach elor or the time when he only had one wife, Mrs Pless. She however eloped with a guy called Dr Raymond Dart after he unearthed some secrets about her. He hated this cultural thing. (Republished and reworked because of popular demand.)

REKORD MOOT VRYDAG 28 OKTOBER 2011

Residents can show their support for Rekord’s Jeans 5 000 project by visiting The Grove Mall until October 28 to donate old or new denims for the Rekord Charity Fund. All denim items will be displayed within the mall on October 29 together with a Miss Charity pageant hosted by Tyger Valley College. Showing their support are celebs (in front) Angelique Gerber, Eagan Williamson and Izak Davel. At the back are Loui Fish, Gretha Wiid and Esti.

Give the gift of denims Denims are a fashion statement in most wardrobes, but many underprivileged adults and children do not have this luxury and therefore Rekord, together with The Grove Mall, will be hosting a Denim Drive promotion during October in aid of charity. Collecting denims for charity is Rekord’s brainchild and they aim to collect more than 5 000 pieces of clothing from October to December. The Grove Mall, who proudly associates themselves with an array of community projects, grasped the opportunity to host the Denim Drive promotion in conjunction with the newspaper. Schools in the area have been contacted to participate and to open their hearts and wardrobes by dona ting denim clothing. Tyger Valley College, one of the participating schools, is very ex cited about the project and hopes to make a difference within the community. The Grove Mall has also partnered with the local radio station, Impact Radio. “Impact Radio and The Grove Mall have done several community projects together, so it was natural contacting them to be a

part of an important promotion such as the Denim Drive,” said Leanne Nell, marketing manager of The Grove Mall. She said they are extremely dedicated to projects such as the Denim Drive promo tion and urges businesses and shoppers to open their hearts and donate any unwanted denim clothing in good condition. Resi dents still have an opportunity to donate their denims until October 28 at various collection bins within the mall. All denim items will be displayed within the mall on October 29 together with a Miss Charity pageant hosted by Tyger Val ley College. The contestants were carefully selected and will be judged on beauty from within, displaying friendliness, caring and consid erate traits, natural beauty and whether she is charity oriented and driven. Miss Charity will have to commit to ini tiate and involve herself further in charity drives, with a minimum of ten hours in 2012, which must include evidence of her involvement. REKORD MOOT VRYDAG 28 OKTOBER 2011

African Jazz evening promising The November monthly Jazz and African Nights, presented by the State Theatre and TMI, takes place at the State Theatre and features musicians such as Louis Mhlanga and Zodwa Mabena, Carlo Mombelli and Medleko Meropa, Pops Mohamed and Rudolph Mam abolo. Catch Louis Mhlanga and Zodwa Mabena on November 4. Mhlanga began his career in mu sic in 1970, fronting many bands in Zimbabwe. He mixed American and Zim babwean influences into his music and he became renowned for his guitar skills and worked with Zim babwean acts such as Shaka, Talk

ing Drum, Mudzimu and Oliver Mtukudzi. Former schoolteacher, Zodwa Mabena, left her job as a teacher to follow her dream of becom ing a musician. She was born in Allemansdrift, KwaNdebele and is a graduate from Trinity College of Music. On November 18 it is the turn of Carlo Mombeli and Medleko Meropa. Carlo Mombeli started his professional music career with the Johnny Fourie and Duke Makasi group as well as leading his own ensemble, Abstractions, recording with Shifty Records. He left South Africa in 1987 and recorded and performed around the

The Boy Who Fell from the Roof by Juliet Jenkin will be one of the plays performed at this year’s Reading Gay.

Sizzling readings will entertain the crowd In celebration of Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT) History month, the month-long annual observance of LGBT history, gay rights and related civil rights movements, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Arts and Culture in collaboration with the Artscape New Writing Programme proudly presents Reading Gay. This is a season of staged readings of new multi award winning South African gay plays from October 26 to 30. The readings start on October 26 at 19:30 with Jade Bowers directing The Boy Who Fell from the Roof (2007) by Juliet Jenkin. This is a heartfelt story about a boy, Simon, who with his best friend Georgina, falls into the cold bath water of homosexuality, race, love, death and growing up in contempo rary Cape Town. On October 27 at 19:30 the UJ Arts Academy alumnus, Motlatji Ditodi, directs Gideon van Eeden’s Myth of Andrew & Jo (2010), which is the last of the plays in the collection that toured to Dublin. A contem porary tale of a gay couple, a lesbian couple and a pregnancy, how will they live, how will they love and how will they laugh? Then on October 28 at 19:30 the Musical Theatre stars Neels Clasen, in Ashraf Johaardien’s Happy Endings Are Extra, (2006), which was the first of

the plays in the collection to be invited to Dublin. A provoca tive story of love and betrayal unravels as one man comes to terms with the life he’s leading and the one he’s left behind. On October 29 at 19:30 Alby Micheals, who is the resident director of the UJ Arts Acade my, takes on Dalliances (2008) by Pieter Jacobs. Leo and Janet are friends. Ken is involved with Andy. When Ken meets Leo and make out in a lift the lives of these four characters intersect with extraordinary results. Jacobs scooped the KKNK Nagtegaal debut prize for his Afrikaans play Plofstof earlier this year. Finally on October 30 at 16:00 television personality, Jacques Bessenger, who plays Renier in Erfsondes 2, directs the lesbian play Careful (2009) by the late Fiona Coyne. Careful was her last play. It is about women and lesbianism, about friendship and fear and being willing to take the risk to care, both about oneself and others. Readings are each on for one night only at the Con Cowan Theatre located at UJ’s Bunting Road campus, adjacent to the SABC in Auckland Park. Tickets are available at Com puticket. Season tickets for all five plays are available from the UJ Arts Centre on the Kingsway campus. Enquiries: 011-559-3058.

them to live a comfortable life. “Added to this, the income stream needs to be sustain able enough to last at least 30 or so years, given the current life expectancy statistics.” There are many investment options available for those who are looking to start building up a retirement portfolio, including saving mechanisms and various retirement plans. A well researched and solid property investment should also be considered as a key element of a retirement portfolio, as real estate remains one of the best performing asset classes, despite the recession and its effects on current property prices and demand. “This is because real estate investments offer diversity from the other alternatives that typically make up a retirement portfolio,” said Goslett. Added to this, performance of real estate is not linked to other asset classes, which means that property investors can still benefit from their real estate purchase when other asset classes are struggling. Buying a property also offers investors long-term appreciation opportunities and the potential for the property to contribute to a regular income stream. Goslett said there are two ways in which an established property portfolio can benefit retirees. One is an investment property retirees can use to generate an additional income. “The buy to let market, for example, is currently performing well considering that rental demand is strong. Tenants in buy to let properties can provide a stable income stream for retirees. Investment properties can also be sold to provide for a lump sum cash injection to retirement funds.”

Research anticipates that close on ten million South Africans will be retiring in the next 25 years. The results of the Sanlam 2011 Bench mark Pensioner Survey indicate that 80% of pensioners have not completely achieved their predetermined retirement goals. On average, 31% of the pensioners believe they have not saved enough for their capital to last for the rest of their lives and 33% of members currently have a monthly shortfall between their income and expenses. Adrian Goslett, CEO of Remax of Southern Africa, said it has been widely reported the South African retirement in dustry is under constant pressure to deliver adequate and sustainable benefits to its pensioners. Local retirement reform is on the cards once more. It cannot be emphasised enough that people need to start working towards their retirement fund as soon as possible. He pointed to research from the Sanlam 2011 Benchmark Pensioner Survey where pensioners were very clear in their advice to start investing and saving as early as possible. Start planning for retirement at an early age and make more enquiries and learn more about investments, investment choices and retirement. “Property has always been a solid per forming, long-term investment and there fore could be an ideal investment vehicle for those looking to add another element to their retirement policies and investments,” he said. He explains that if a person had to retire at 65 years of age, they will need 75% of the income earned when working to enable

Women’s Sevens beat international opponents The Tuks Women’s Sevens rugby team has done it again. This team won the recent Middelburg Nashua sevens tournament against international and provincial opponents. This was achieved without several of their star players. The players were involved in the Springbok training camp while the Middelburg tournament took place. In the process of winning the tournament, Tuks Women’s Sevens have beaten international opponents such as Zimbabwe and Botswana, as well as provincial teams such as the Cheetahs and the Pumas. In the final they faced the Sharks and they eventually won 40-12. The next tournaments that Tuks Women’s Sevens will be competing in are the Zimbabwe Sevens tournament in November and the Dubai IRB Sevens tournament in early December. They are, however, still looking for sponsors to help them to compete in these tournaments. Here are members of the Tuks Women’s Sevens team with their couch, Riaan van der Merwe, after the final against the Sharks in Middelburg.

This special occasion is part of a joint venture with the Pretoria-based chess edu cational project Moves for Life (MFL). President Jacob Zuma is the patron of Moves for Life. Kasparov announced that he wishes to link his Kasparov Chess Foundation to MFL to take the successful MFL formula to other African countries. He has added that he plans to work with MFL to make Johannesburg the chess capital of Africa. Competing in Egypt Two local sportsmen were part of a team consisting of three air pistol shots and their manager, who flew to Egypt recently for the Africa Shooting Championships. Francois van Tonder from Pretoria, Michael de Nysschen from Bloemfontein, Carel Smit from Randfontein and their manager, Nico Rautenbach from Pretoria, will represent South Africa at this event. Van Tonder is the most experienced shooter and has participated internationally for a number of years. He achieved many accolades.

The group hopes to achieve a team award and possibly individual medals also. Teams from all over the continent will participate in the Africa Shooting Champi onships. All participants will endeavour to secure qualification for the 2012 Olympic Games in London by achieving a quota place. The respective members compete regularly in all provincial championships annually. Enquiries: The South African Pistol As sociation on 012-543-2786.

The Pretoria Military Volleyball Club (PMVC) celebrated outstanding achieve ments recently. The club delivered a number of South African National Defence Force (SANDF) members who were selected for the SANDF national team, for the Gauteng North team and for the SA National Vol leyball team. The club was formed in 1980 and is situ ated at the Airforce Gymnasium Melville Hall across from Zwartkop Airforce Base. This club is still a very competitive club within Gauteng and specifically in the Gauteng North area. PMVC was crowned the champion of the 2008 and 2010 SANDF Volleyball Championships. This year the PMVC would like to play more volleyball in Gauteng and especially

in Pretoria. The club also has social vol leyball days where the community can join on a weekend and play against other teams in the Pretoria area. The club has also created a Facebook page (PMVC-volleyball) where achieve ments, social days and competitions can be viewed. All volleyball players, beginners and current players, are welcome to contact the PMVC for information on social days or any other information they need on vol leyball. The team is also looking for a sponsor or donations that could assist in promoting the game and PMVC would like to play in the Gauteng club championships held by Volleyball South Africa. Enquiries: Rudolph du Plessis on 082563-9155.

Kasparov will be visiting South Africa as the guest of MFL from November 12 to 15 to promote the Kasparov Chess Foundation link up with the Moves for Life programme. Mickey Scheepers, MFL operations manager, said the game of chess impacts positively on maths, science and com prehension abilities, while also imparting valuable life skills to children. In learning to play chess, children are mastering a wide range of skills such as pattern recogni tion, classifying information, reasoning by analogy, following principles, calculating possible sequences of events and critical thinking.

Foto: GB Jordaan

Bekende rugbyspeler sluit by Klofies aan Koos Venter
