The memorial service of 16-yearold David Hlongwane, who committed suicide after he had allegedly been bullied, was held last week Thursday at the Lethabong Secondary School in Soshanguve. Classmates, teachers, friends and family members gathered in their numbers to bid him farewell. President of the school’s Representative Council of Learners, Boikanyo Mamabolo, broke down after reliving a few moments with Hlongwane. “This is a big loss for us. We never prepared ourselves for this, but it brings us back to what we have lost and determines who we will become,� said Mamabolo. Tears flowed from the eyes of Sheila Hlongwane, Hlongwane’s mother, as she listened to the school governing body chairman giving his condolences. “He was very young. We will forever remember him as our child, an ambassador for Lethabong,� Mr Mangaxa said. Representing the teachers, Ms J Mokonyana described Hlongwane’s death as a sad loss. “We have failed as a school. As teachers we look at these children and hope to see them successful one day,� she said. The representative of the district office of the department of education, Mr Phokanoka said Hlongwane’s death should teach them how precious human life is. Charles Phahlane, spokesperson of the Gauteng Department of Education, said they sent councillors to help the family and the pupils.

Passengers take action Taxi driver arrested after speeding from roadblock Legion Thwala A 26-year-old taxi driver from Soshanguve was recently taught a lesson he will never forget. Passengers beat him up after he tried to flee from a roadblock, manned by police. Rietgat police station spokesperson, Warrant Officer Lolo Mangena, said the police were conducting roadblocks between February 17 and 19 on Buitekant Road, when the incident happened. “The taxi driver approached the roadblock slowly and was requested to park on the side of the road by one of our officials.� The officer wanted to check the necessary driving documents and the roadworthiness of the vehicle. “At first he pretended that he was following the instruction, but then decided to speed off towards Mashamaite petrol station. That was when a car chase ensued,� said Mangena. He said there were about nine passengers inside the taxi. The police noticed that the vehicle swerved recklessly. “The taxi subsequently came to a halt next to the Putco Bus Depot towards Block NN, after one of the passengers overpowered the driver and managed to stop the vehicle. They pulled him out of his vehicle and assaulted him before police arrived at the scene,� said Mangena. Police rescued the driver from the passengers onslaught. The people were accusing him of putting their lives at risk by driving recklessly and attempting to flee from the roadblock. Mangena said the passengers claimed they pleaded with the driver to stop the vehicle. He allegedly replied that stopping at roadblocks was a waste of time. The driver was arrested and charged with reckless driving and driving without a driver’s licence. Twelve taxi drivers were fined for various road offences and 11 suspects were arrested for possession of dagga. A 45-year-old suspect was taken into custody for trading without the necessary liquor trading documents. The tavern was closed down

Police hunt on for serial rapist Legion Thwala Ga-Rankuwa police believe there is a serial rapist on the loose and appeal to the community for help. This came after a 7-year-old girl was sexually molested shortly after her mother sent her to a nearby store recently. Ga-Rankuwa police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Matthews Nkoadi, said the mother reported her child missing after she was unable to find her at the store where she sent her.
“When we arrived at the mother’s house later that evening, the girl had returned. According to the girl she was abducted and sexually molested. She said a man, driving a black Polo, bought her sweets and drove her to an isolated bushy area between Zone 7 and 8, where she was molested,� said Nkoadi. The police intelligence team believes the suspect could be linked to a similar case that took place last year. “This is because the modus operandi is the same and the suspect took the victims
to a similar spot,� he said. Nkoadi said in a previous case, the victim said the suspect was driving a black BMW. “The victims are still young and only identified the suspect as being an older person who is dark in complexion. We plead with parents to avoid allowing their children to roam the streets after dark. We are also calling on anyone with information to contact us,� Nkoadi concluded. Three suspects appear in court for rape Legion Thwala Activists from anti-women abuse groups in Ga-Rankuwa will demonstrate at the Magistrate’s Court today to oppose bail for three suspects linked to a recent rape case. Thabo Mahlangu (29), Thabiso Diboshwa (23) and Neo Moche (26) allegedly raped a 28-year-old woman at gunpoint in Mabopane after she boarded a vehicle she believed to be a taxi.
The trio was arrested separately days after the victim managed to give the description of the vehicle in which she was travelling during the incident. According to Ga-Rankuwa police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Matthews Nkoadi, police managed to trace the vehicle to a house in Zone 7, where the first suspect was arrested. “He then confessed and named his accomplices. They were arrested later. The
suspects recently made their first appearance in court and was formally charged. They are expected to appear for the bail application on March 2,� said Nkoadi. He said the police was grateful that the victim managed to remember the registration of the vehicle. “We encourage other possible victims of crime to try and obtain as many details of their attackers as possible to help us in our investigations,� he said.
Come identify stolen goods at station Officials from Mabopane police station are calling on residents who had property stolen to identify it at the station. Warrant Officer Dikatso Thebe, the station’s spokesperson, said the police have recovered a variety of stolen goods since last year and are hoping to return it to the rightful owners. “Some of the goods we recovered since last year include plasma TVs, car radios, hi-fi’s, fridges, household equipment, building material and other types of electrical appliances. Identification should be supplied as well as receipts of purchase. Residents are urged to go to the station’s SAP 13 office and ask for Warrant Officers Moloisane or Bokaba.

This came after the arrest of two suspects, aged 40 and 45, for robbing a 57-year-old woman. According to Ga-Rankuwa police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Matthews Nkoadi, the victim was waiting for a taxi at a pick-up spot next to Casandra Park when a stranger approached her. “The man bumped into the victim and sprinkled her face with an unknown substance, causing her to temporarily lose her sight.
Minutes later two suspects, driving in a Hyundai, pretended to have noticed the incident and they approached the woman. They told her to get into their car, pretending to try and save her from a possible robbery,” said Nkoadi. He said the victim explained that after driving around for several minutes with the suspects, they dropped her off at the same spot where she caught a taxi home. “The victim said when she arrived home, she checked the cash she had placed inside a bank envelope, but only found papers resembling bank notes. Her cash, about R70, was gone,” Nkoadi explained.
She gave police a description of the vehicle and a search was started. Police spotted the vehicle at Rosslyn Plaza, where two suspects were arrested. “We appeal to residents to avoid accepting help from unknown persons and to get a description of suspicious people. This will enable us to trace and arrest perpetrators of such crimes,” said Nkoadi. The suspects appeared in the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. They remain in custody for further investigation. “Our investigation is continuing and we expect to make more arrests, as we believe more suspects were involved,” said Nkoadi.
An 18-month-old baby girl became one of the latest victims to be seriously injured on the notorious Moloto Road after a severe accident that left one man dead. Two other people were also critically injured when two light motor vehicles collided head-on on Saturday afternoon. According to Netcare911 spokesperson, Jeffrey Wicks, the cause of the accident is unclear, but information indicates one of the drivers moved into the oncoming lane before the crash. “Both vehicles collided head-on and skidded off the road, coming to rest near the initial point of impact.
“Paramedics arrived at the scene to find one man with fatal injuries. His body was trapped in the wreckage. They attended to the other wounded and initiated care,” said Wicks. Wicks said the Netcare911 Aeromedical helicopter took a critically injured woman to the Charlotte Maxeke Academic hospital. “The other injured were transported by ambulance to state hospitals in the area.” According to Wicks, Moloto Road is one of the roads where some of the worst accidents occur on a weekly basis. “People should be careful when driving. A little bit of patience goes a long way,” he said.

According to Ga-Rankuwa police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Matthews Nkoadi, the woman was apparently removing washing from the washing line when she was struck by a high electricity voltage.
“Her husband tried to assist her, but he was also electrocuted. The man had been badly injured and in a serious condition when transported to the hospital by paramedics, while the woman was certified dead on the scene,” he said. Nkoadi said the cause of the accident is unknown and police are investigating the incident. An inquest docket has since been opened.

The project has a support group where they provide information, research and workshops on HIV. They also offer counselling to families of affected people so they can cope with the disclosure of the status of the patient.

Soshanguve primary school pupils can now participate in the ‘Learn how to swim’ programme. Swimming South Africa and the Tshwane metro introduced this programme to break the imbalance in the ability to swim between black and white pupils. The programme will start with four schools, Khensani, RS Maluleke, Dithabaneng and Entokozeni. The programme also raises awareness of safety around pools, especially for primary school pupils. Both Swimming South Africa and the Tshwane metro face minor challenges. The only pool available around Soshanguve is the paying public pool in Block H.
Recently an agreement was reached to incorporate of the programme at the swimming pool, said Lebogang Mampe, a swimming instructor at Swimming South Africa. A head of the foundation phase at RS Maluleke Primary School, Emily Nkuna, said the only challenge they faced at the school was the fact that Swimming South Africa was not providing transport for their pupils. They have to walk with more than 60 pupils from Block G where the school is to the pool in Block H. Chris Zungu, the superintendent and lifeguard at the swimming pool, said the swimming pool is ready for the programme. “The reason we are starting at the beginning of March is to allow foundation phase pupils to settle in at their schools.�

He said they planted Riverbushwillow and Waterberry trees which they planted because these were suitable for the conditions found in Mabopane. “By 2015 there must be a million trees planted. The mayor has mandated us that the city must go green,� he said. Masego Mahlangu, a 15-yearold resident of Block B said: “It is
a good idea and it shows that the metro is taking our community seriously.� Itumeleng Ngomezulu, another resident said: “It is a good initiative for the community and I can imagine how pretty and green our community will look. “I am so proud. After so many years at least they are doing something good.�

In attendance were members of the community of Soshanguve and various churches from around the area. The show not only featured recording gospel artists, but also motivational speakers. Dr Mmaphefo Kganyago, of the Dr George Mokhari hospital, told the attendees to love others as they loved themselves because it was the right thing to do. She spoke about how she had moved from being a doctor to where she was now, spreading the gospel of Christ. “After a long period of treating a patient, I one day decided to pray for him. He then woke up and raised his hand to reach out to me. From that day on I decided I would change the books that I read and
read the Bible and here I am today. I only wish I had started earlier to read the Word of God,” she said. The audience came to their feet when the 18-year-old son of the late gospel legend, Oleseng Shuping, dedicated a song to his father. He performed a few tracks from his debut album that will be launched on March 18. He got the crowds singing and dancing along to his tunes. Prince Mabue, also known as ‘PapaNaledi’ of TUT FM, said the event first took place last year. “The aim of today’s event is to prove that God is our greatest celebrity and we will continue doing the best for His people,” he said. A resident from Soshanguve Block M, Julia Malaka, said the day was uplifting and she felt revived. “I thank God who made a way for me to get here, because I love to be part of growth in the church,” she said.
Local company wants to create more jobs for people Rhandzu Hlungwani While some people are complaining about the lack of jobs, a Soshanguve businessman is making a difference in his community through his signage company. Fighting poverty, Jabu Mdluli (34) hired six people from Block H. His signage company specialises in manufacturing roads signs, number plates and name signs for schools and businesses. Mdluli said he gave back to the community by donating billboards. Since they started eight years ago, they managed to donate to Phumzile Primary School, Sphamandla Adult Centre and Thembalakhe crèche. As a community company they have to survive challenges
such as not getting paid for work and that resulted in business being slow. The principal of Phumzile Primary, Amos Dimande, said Mdluli’s company was going the extra mile for the school. He said they also helped pupils with art lessons where they taught them to draw and paint. Mdluli said the company has lots of materials and wishes to hire more people around Soshanguve. Temba Tom said working for Signage made a huge difference in his life, as he was able to take care of his family.

Soshanguve residents came in large numbers on Saturday to support a local author’s book launch. Thomas Mohamutji introduced his second motivational book titled I never knew you at the launch held at the Falala community hall in Block F. His first book, Departure point, was published in 2010. Mohamutji said his new book approached life’s challenges constructively. “This book has valuable practical solutions to everyday challenges like hate, jealousy, adultery and even attitudes that are not only faced by Christians, but by all human beings.” He said the title was inspired by the fact that a person cannot be known by just looking at his or her outside appearance. Various pastors from different
churches have contributed to the production of the book. According to the event organiser, Tshediso Lehari, the reason behind the launch was to inspire township writers. Rose Kekana from Ga-Rankuwa said she hoped the book would be an encouragement to the younger generation to read further. “The youth in Soshanguve is faced with a lot of challenges. They must read books like these because it will help them understand the Word of the Lord better. This will empower them in the future,” she said. A raffle was held and a local resident, Mabatho Masipa, won a copy of the new book. “It is the first book ever that I own. I plan to read it as soon as possible. I look forward to enjoying it,” she said. Mohamutji said his book would be available in libraries and in bookshops soon.

Academy promotes young talent Sibongile Mahlaola A new Arts Academy in Soshanguve is looking for interested and vibrant youngsters from the age of 8 to participate in their music and dance programmes. The launch takes place from 09:00 to 12:00 on March 10 at the Babina Phuti Primary School in Block BB. Professional ballet tutor, Phindile Mahlangu from Soshanguve Block H, said the aim of the academy was to promote young
talent and ensure skills development for people of Soshanguve, Mabopane, GaRankuwa and Hammanskraal. “We want to achieve a lot through this art school by allowing young people to participate and to do something positive with their lives,” she said. This has brought the focus sharply on this continuous scourge that is rife in our schools. Suicide is one of the consequences in bullying. school environment. Bullying can also have negative lifelong consequences – both for the pupils who bully and for their victims. A recent study indicates that a strong correlation exist between bullying other pupils during the school years and experiencing legal or criminal troubles as adults. Victims often fear school and consider school to be an unsafe and unhappy place. Bullying can also lead to depression, anxiety, sleeplessness and psychological problems among school-going children. A new type of bullying is cyber-bullying, which takes advantage of new technologies such as Facebook, Twitter, Mixit, voice mail and YouTube. We of course live in a violent society where brutality has become an everyday occurrence. The victims are in many instances too scared to speak out because of fear of intimidation and restarting the whole cycle of abuse and bullying. Whether the bullying is direct or indirect, the key component of bullying is that the physical or psychological intimidation occurs repeatedly over time to create an ongoing pattern of harassment and abuse. Authorities and parents must act in a firm manner to eradicate this scourge from our schools. There must be definite policies in place so that every child knows what the school’s policy is about bullying and initiation. Effective interventions must involve the entire school community rather than focus on the perpetrators and victims alone. Parents are often unaware of the bullying problems and talk about it with their children to a limited extent.

Spinning BMW cars entertain the fans Mokgadi Letsoalo A massive traditional event of dust and smoke from spinning BMW cars brought fun and entertainment to motor cars fans in Soshanguve on Sunday. The event organiser and a car spinner, Tshepang Mkhonza, said it was a hectic week. The Spin City event was supposed to be held at Moretele Park but at a late stage he had to prepare the venue in Block F, West Industrial Side, where it was usually held after being denied access at Moretele. However, the event turned out perfectly with the performances from car spinners from as far as Mokopane in Limpopo and Kwa Thema in Springs. The large crowd was not disappointed
by the performances of their favourite car spinners, the likes of Terminator from Kwa Thema. The weather showed signs of rain and strong winds but that did not affect the fun. Nompumelelo Sithole, a big car spinning fan originally from Springs but now residing in Soshanguve, said she went to the event to support all the spinners from the East Rand. The 23-year-old Emmanuel Manyane, better known as Manova, Soshanguve’s favourite spinner, said he spins cars for fun although he is paid for doing it. He said he likes taking risks and spinning cars was a great way to enjoy the anxiety of a dangerous game. He said the participants needs enough practice to be a good performer like him.

Team ready for challenge Zanele Atumane Netball players came out in their numbers at the Soshanguve netball ground in Block CC to showcase their talent. Six men and ten women were chosen to represent Region 1 at the Tshwane Regional Challenge on March 3. “We were looking for great talent, good defence and striking attacks to represent Region 1,� said the sport council member, Lizzy Selomane.
Region 1 includes areas in Pretoria North, Soshanguve and Winterveld. The team’s coach, Charlie Masetla, said discipline and dedication are what makes a good player. One of the chosen male netball players, Itumeleng Mbonani, said it was a great honour for him to represent his region for the first time. They will be playing against six other regions in the Tshwane Challenge, to be held at the Gezina Korfbal club.

Federation kicks off new sporting codes Legion Thwala Altus Sport youth leaders are currently implementing regular coaching sessions of eight sporting codes at primary, high school and community centres. This comes after a decision was taken at a recent National Sport Indaba that NGO’s should work through sport federations. According to the director of the organisation, Gert Potgieter, Altus Sport took the initiative to communicate with sport federations to let its youth sport leaders obtain top coaching from qualified coaches. “Altus Sport kicked off this programme with the Northerns Cricket Union,� he said. Edward Khosa, manager of Cricket Operations of Northerns Cricket Union, conducted a most successful cricket coaching clinic for Altus Sport in collaboration with Tshwane metro Sport on Saturday at Club Rendezvous in Pretoria North. Potgieter said Altus Sport youth leaders would work closely with the cricket
union’s coaches in various townships in Pretoria. Potgieter said these sessions are highly appreciated as they are presented free of charge by the federations. “Our youth sport leaders are unemployed with a passion for sport and sessions like these boost their selfesteem and contribute tremendously towards their personal development,� he said. Potgieter added that this month the South African Rugby Union would be conducting a Boksmart coaching session with the leaders after which each youth leader will be issued with a Boksmart certification card. “Already close co-operation with the Blue Bulls Rugby Union in the townships is taking place. Netbal, gymnastics, soccer and more will follow, until all eight codes are incorporated. Our coaching programme complements those of the federations, as it is of paramount importance that our children receive the correct coaching methods from the very start,� he said. Invaders rise to the occasion Sibusiso Banda Soshanguve’s Invader FC drew 4-all against Mamelodi FC in a nail-biting match in the SAB Safa Tshwane League at the Giant stadium on Sunday. From the first whistle of the match, both teams played fastpaced attacking football and created a lot of scoring opportunities, which turned out to be unproductive. Mamelodi’s Chermoundry Bobbejee scored the opening goal in the third minute after the home side defence had moved forward. The Invaders had brilliant passes but Mamelodi’s strong defence blocked all their shots. In the last minutes of the first half, Titimalo Tabane tried to find Mamelodi’s second goal but most of his shots hit the cross bar. Victory for Happy Swallows in Sodifa match Rosina Mamorobela Happy Swallows won 2-1 against City Rangers in a Soshanguve Football Association (Sodifa) match on Sunday. Happy Swallows hosted the game played in Soshanguve, Block GG. The host team dominated the game and the City Rangers, who started the game with eight players, were nowhere to be found. Happy Swallows had better ball possession and controlled most of the game. During the second half City Rangers got scoring opportunities that were not converted. Swallows’ Tshepo Mokone brought the game back to life when he scored a goal in the
65th minute. City Rangers got the opportunity to equalise, but failed to do so when Josia Mothonsi missed a penalty. The equaliser, however, came soon afterwards through a free kick from Lucky Parker. Happy Swallows took the lead with ten minutes left when Mokone scored his second goal of the match. City Rangers’ coach, Hilda Lekalakala, said the boys lost concentration and focus. The sixteen teams in the Sodifa League have played four games so far. The team that tops the league at the end of the season will go straight to the Super League. The team that comes second will go through to the play-offs.
