Woede oor klappers Inwoner se Indiese Ringnekpapegaaie vrek glo na vuurwerkvertoning by krieketstadion

ming geskiet is. Die vergadering neem by die NG-kerk, The Reeds, in Bothrillstraat plaas. Navrae: Johan Fourie by 083-787-7945.

Youths to march Gavin Emmanuel and Ané Roux

Busdrivers lay down tools Valeska Abreu The Gautrain bus services came to a halt for two days after employees engaged in an illegal strike earlier this week. This was apparently in solidarity with an individual driver who had been suspended pending the outcome of an investigation. Commuters were left raging once again posting their livid ex-

pressions on the Gautrain Facebook and Twitter pages. Kevin Leo-Smith posted on twitter: “Unions are making the Gautrain a joke. They seem to forget the odd passenger pays their salaries. They are chasing the few away,” he said. The media liaison officer for the Bombella Concession Company, Nano Gasenewe said in a statement that as a consequence, the bus

management company seeked an urgent court interdict to compel the strikers to return to work. At the time of going to print on Wednesday at 14:00, the outcome of the court interdict was not yet known and it could also not be established how long the strike would continue. Traffic will literally come to a standstill in the Pretoria CBD as thousands of disgrunt led youths march to the Union Buildings today and Friday to make their voices heard about unemployment and free education for the youth. The ANC Youth League (ANCYL) has set aside October 27 and 28 as the official dates to roll out mass action to strategic centres of power in South Africa. On Thursday ANCYL will lead mass action and protest to the Chamber of Mines to demand the nationalisation of mines and equal share in the country’s mineral resources. From the Chamber of Mines, ANCYL will lead a march to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in Sandton to demand an equal share in the country’s wealth. The ANCYL’s original request of marching to the Union Buildings on Thursday afternoon for a night vigil has, however, been denied. During a meeting to discuss the march proceedings between the ANCYL, the Tshwane metro police, the police, the metro’s Emergency Services and the Presidency on Tuesday, it was decided that a memorandum will only be accepted on Friday, thus making any gathering at the Union Buildings on Thursday night unlawful. The march on Friday was approved by the metro police and will culminate in the handing over of a memorandum, demanding

free education, the immediate abolishment of labour brokers, jobs for the youth, better housing and sanitation for informal settlement dwellers and access to water. According to the Tshwane head of Community Safety, General Daniel Manganye, told Rekord that traffic in the inner city will be affected. Motorists are urged to avoid the roads around the Union Buildings in Pretoria as traffic delays are expected due to the march. The league is expecting 5 000 people to participate in the march and to ensure a peaceful march, there would also be 1 000 youth league marshals, 500 police and private security company members. “The ANC leadership told us to look out for agent provocateurs. We might be infiltrated by people with ill intentions,” ANCYL president, Julius Malema was reported as saying during a media briefing in Johannesburg on Monday. The planned march seems to have caused a rift in the ruling tri-alliance of the ANC. The SA Communist Party with its leader, Dr Blade Nzimande, its youth league and Nathi Mthethwa, Minister of Police, strongly condemn the march. They are accusing ANCYL of playing on the feelings of the poor and have urged their members not join any action that will not make any difference to their lives. Cosatu is supporting the march out of principal accor ding to its general secretary, Zwelinzima Vavi.

Minister halts all roadworks

is.

The Minister of Transport, Sibusiso Ndebele, has called for an immediate halt to any further roadworks on Gauteng’s freeways until the toll issue has been resolved. Nedebele released a statement on October 23 saying that although the first phase of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Plan has delivered good road infrastructure, it was an expensive exercise that has drawn sharp critique from the public and that consultation is the only way forward. “All spheres of government should be part of a consultation process with all affected parties, consumers in the main. Good infrastructure is a necessity for a better future for our country, but this requirement must not leave our people even poorer,” said Ndebele. The Justice Project South Africa (JPSA) is accusing Ndebele of holding Gauteng motorists hostage after his statement to stop any further road maintenance works until the toll issue has been resolved. Howard Dembovsky, national chairman of the JPSA, said the organisation is shocked with what they describe as Ndebele’s lack of foresight. “The first phase of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Plan has not been completed yet, unless the first phase only included the N1 and R21 freeways. The N12 and N3 freeways in Johannesburg are in such a shocking demolished state of dilapidation that they constantly cause crashes and daily gridlock traffic. Calling a halt to their reinstatement as usable freeways is little short of insanity,” Dembovsky said. “There is a vast difference between calling a halt to planned tolling and calling a halt to the construction of roads, which have been demolished by the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) and its contractors.” He added that the answer to implementing and maintaining roads infrastructure in South Africa lies in the coming up with workable solutions that would benefit the public and from spending money collected from existing taxation and possibly even reasonable tolling on the roads infrastructure. “There is nothing wrong with saying: Minister Ndebele said all these processes, including a consultative process initiated by the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, should be allowed to reach their logical conclusions to ensure that all parties concerned and their respective views are brought on board. The matter of tolls can be properly discussed and resolved. Failing this, Ndebele and Sanral are lining themselves up for legal action and possibly even criminal charges for destroying what roads were in place before the project started,” Dembovsky said.

REKORD CENTURION FRIDAY OCTOBER 28, 2011

Electricity saga continues Verdagtes by Ané Roux The electricity saga continues with Adriana Randall, DA spokesperson for finance, who is leading a campaign to have residents who have fallen into a dark pitfall of high electricity accounts, to find a way back into the light. “I have seen accounts where residents have been charged up to 71 days in advance. Incorporate this amount with the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) rates’ increase and you have people who cannot pay and are stranded with no water and no electricity.” She told Rekord that she views the advanced projections of

the metro on accounts as irresponsible and unfair to residents. “In some cases where meter readers are unexpectedly locked, the metro is no longer allowing residents to submit meter readings, residents do not get any service from the metro when they query their accounts and if they are unable to pay, the metro simply cuts the services. This is not effective management, it’s a hostage situation.” During a public meeting held last week to discuss the electri city account debacle, Randall admitted that the residents’ responses had been positive and she is determined to make the metro realise the seriousness of the situation. “I have received numerous accounts from residents across Pretoria. This is to show the metro that the complaints are not isolated incidences as they insist.” She further urged residents to make contact with their ward Isak Pieterson submits his elec tricity account as part of a campaign to have electricity accounts corrected after double readings and rate increases where passed onto residents over the past three months.

councillors to address their high electricity accounts. “Residents will be able to make arrangements with the metro to pay their accounts. Some simply can’t afford the full amount and we therefore urge residents to work with their ward councillors to have payment arrangements made.” Karen Meyer, DA councillor for Community Safety, said residents should consider prepaid meters as an alternative. “With prepaid electricity, residents will be able to manage their consumption, however, the only way a prepaid meter will be installed is when all accounts with the metro has been settled,” she warned. DA leader, Brandon Topham, stated that the metro had to seriously re-evaluate their customer service capabilities. He also said that in some cases the metro seemed to be willing to come to a workable solution, but that the capacity to do so was hampering their efforts. “Residents are frustrated and angry, the metro seems unfazed and simply expects residents to pay. I urge the metro to improve their consumer relations and thus their service delivery.” Rekord is still awaiting an explanation from the Tshwane Media Centre on why residents’ accounts were charged more than 31 days in advance and why residents, who’s meter boxes are padlocked, are no longer allowed to send in their own metre readings. Enquiries: Adriana Randall on 083-263-8667.

beroof.

Residents can show their support for Rekord’s Jeans 5 000 project by visiting The Grove Mall until October 28 to donate old or new denims for the Rekord Charity Fund. Showing their support are celebs (in front) Angelique Gerber, Eagan Williamson and Izak Davel. At the back are Loui Fish, Gretha Wiid and Esti.

Give the gift of denims part of an important promotion such as the Denim Drive,” said Leanne Nell, marketing manager of The Grove Mall. She said they are extremely dedicated to projects such as the Denim Drive promotion and urges businesses and shoppers to open their hearts and donate any unwanted denim clothing in good condition. Residents still have an opportunity to donate their denims until October 28 at various collection bins within the mall. All denim items will be displayed within the mall on October 29 together with a Miss Charity pageant hosted by Tyger Valley College. The contestants were carefully selected and will be judged on beauty from within, displaying friendliness, caring and considerate traits, natural beauty and whether she is charity oriented and driven. Miss Charity will have to commit to initiate and involve herself further in charity drives, with a minimum of ten hours in 2012, which must include evidence of her involvement. Denims are a fashion statement in most wardrobes, but many underprivileged adults and children do not have this luxury and therefore Rekord, together with The Grove Mall, will be hosting a Denim Drive promotion during October in aid of charity. Collecting denims for charity is Rekord’s brainchild and they aim to collect more than 5 000 pieces of clothing from October to December. The Grove Mall, who proudly associates themselves with an array of community projects, grasped the opportunity to host the Denim Drive promotion in conjunction with the newspaper. Schools in the area have been contacted to participate and to open their hearts and wardrobes by dona ting denim clothing. Tyger Valley College, one of the participating schools, is very excited about the project and hopes to make a difference within the community. The Grove Mall has also partnered with the local radio station, Impact Radio. “Impact Radio and The Grove Mall have done several community projects together, so it was natural contacting them to be a

COMMENT

Police are on the alert after several incidences of xenophobic violence took place last week in Laudium, Atteridgeville, Soshanguve and Alexandra. Rumours are afloat that more violence is planned for this week. This calls to mind the terrible scenes of xenophobic violence we experienced in May 2008, leaving 70 people dead. Now as a new bout of protests has reared its head, South Africans are worried about how to avoid a repeat of the horrific violence. In the dictionary the term ‘xenophobia’ is defined as a hatred or fear of foreigners. It describes xenophobia as an ‘attitude’ rather than an ‘action’ or ‘practice’. For South Africa this definition needs to be rewritten. Here xenophobia can’t be separated from violence and physical abuse. This hostility against foreigners is explained in terms of limited resources. In the post-apartheid epoch a realisation that delivery is not immediate has meant that discontent and indignation are at their peak. People are more conscious of their deprivation than ever before. This is the ideal situation for a phenomenon like xenophobia to take root and flourish and to find a scapegoat. In November we will be celebrating the National Day of Tolerance and government and the Tshwane metro must commit themselves to listen and find solutions to people’s concerns and to condemn looting and attacks on foreigners under the guise of service delivery protests.

Wat sien jy in die kruis? Ek doen verlede week personeelop leiding by ’n skool vir serebraal gestremdes.

Compost scammers hit Johnny Mynhardt from Annlin writes: I was a victim of this scam and feel obligated to prevent this from happening to other residents. On Saturday afternoon a white pickup with a couple of compost bags on the back stopped in front of my house. The driver said he noticed that my grass had some grey patches and asked if they could fix it up with compost and fertilizer. I asked him the price and he said it was R85 for a 50kg bag and they will do all the work. I also asked how many

bags would be needed and this is where the scam starts. He said that he was not sure but estimated two to five bags. We agreed and I tended to my dogs for five minutes. When I returned they were busy raking the fertilizer over the grass. He said they had emptied 28 bags on my lawn. I checked the pick-up beforehand and noticed around ten bags full of compost, they obviously had additional empty bags in the vehicle. They charged me R2 380. In the end, I only agreed to pay for ten bags, but I feel residents should be warned.

OPINION

So iets sal oneties wees.

REKORD CENTURION FRIDAY OCTOBER 28, 2011

Coming of age Paradox Pless wishes he was born in another era. This rushed modern life of the Stone Age is not for sissies. When someone said that this year, julle gaan klippe kou, they meant it literally. He knows his history well and is aware that there were eras when living was slow and easy and one could spend one’s day strolling around a beautiful garden and keep oneself busy by naming animals. How difficult can that be? How many times can one name a ‘lion’ a ‘lion’ or a ‘tiger’ a ‘tiger’? One guy tried to make it interesting by bringing some variation into it, by naming one a ‘Bengal tiger’ the other an ‘Indian tiger’ or ‘white tiger’. But his wife said he was being racist. Even then there was trouble brewing in paradise. The wife was having an affair with a real snake of a guy who was peddling fruit and drugs and who persuaded her to try boom. But the present age was getting to him. The company he worked for, Stone Implements Inc was starting to retrench people because they could not afford to keep up with new technology. Iron implements were all the rage now and countries, like China, were starting to dump iron on their market. The new-world rulers, the Neanderthals, were trying to change the name of Pless’ city to Gondwanaland. Imagine bringing up his two hundred children without a sense of history and permanency and forever moving about like a continent adrift. Things around him were changing quickly. If you took too long to make a decision you might be in for a surprise. Like the leader of the Gondwana Youth League. He and his followers decided to claim and expropriate a piece of land,

9

P nch of salt Fred Boshoff

which he claimed was ancestral land. Where he got his ancestors from, nobody knows, because the present generation was only the sixth generation of people on earth. Anyway, the morning he and his followers arrived at the piece of land it was gone. It was taken away by the continental drift and was already a piece of another continent. Well, he could not sit around being depressed and longing for the good old days. He has to get up and wake his wives and kids. The kids must get ready for the Sterkfontein Primary School and wives for hunting, even if it is only for bargains. O, for the sweet life of being a bachelor or the time when he only had one wife, Mrs Pless. She however eloped with a guy called Dr Raymond Dart after he unearthed some secrets about her. He hated this cultural thing. (Republished and reworked because of popular demand.)

Heimweë, groot lag én respek vir troepie-dae Ané Roux

Irene Dramatic Society will soon be performing a pantomime, Jock and the Beanstalk, the Scottish version, that takes place at Irene Homes Hall on November 25 and 26. Dani Tiller will play Jock.

Family fun at theatre As Christmas rears its head with the start of the buying frenzy in the October season, actors, singers and dancers are polishing their words, performances and even their shoes to make a good impression on theatre going residents. Irene Dramatic Society (IDS) are performing a pantomime, Jock and the Beanstalk, the Scottish version, at the Irene Homes Hall, Albert Street, Irene on November 25 at 19:30 and November 26 at 15:30 and 19:30. Traditionally a girl performs the principal boy in a pantomime and the multitalen-

“Rowers, aandag!

ted Dani Tillier plays Jock. This time, however, there are two dames, Dame Trott, Jock’s mom, played by Adrian van der Merwe and Duim Spyker, her sister, played by Roy Wilkinson. Young and old alike will fall in love with Heather, the wee Hieland coo, played by Livy Ashworth. Vickey Bosch directs the show that promises lots of good, clean family fun but with a few naughty innuendoes added for spice. Enquiries: Adrian van der Merwe on 082-371-5488.

SMS’e kos R1,50.

Summer fun at feast

Musique Mosaique se repertoire is uiteenlopend en sluit A Cappella asook begeleide werke in.

Kaartjies is by Computicket beskikbaar. I’m so happy these versions are finally seeing the light of day,” said Buttery. Another out-take was the demo version for the title track featuring British singer and songwriter, Piers Faccini, along with various other special guests such as KwaZulu-Natal legend, Madala Kunene, on vocals and Jewish harp as well as Buttery’s long-time guitar hero, Tony Cox. Celebrating Paul Kruger’s birthday Natashia Hudson

Deputy Director of the Ditsong Kruger Museum, Talita Fourie and architects Mathebe Aphane, Inge Wessels and Engela White.

On October 10 the Ditsong Kruger Museum celebrated the birth of Paul Kruger at a social event held at the Kruger House Garden in Church Street West. Kruger, who became the first president of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republick (later Transvaal), was born on October 10, 1825 at Vaalbank farm. The event was held to commemorate Kruger’s date of birth and to highlight the importance of South Africa’s history and heritage. Talitha Fourie, deputy director of the museum, said Kruger might not have been perfect but was a great leader and a man of principle.

“We celebrate his birthday to think about our history. It is part and parcel of us and will also determine our future.” The event was not only held to celebrate Kruger’s birthday, but also to inform residents about the Kruger House’s renovation project that is currently underway. The museum’s aim is to work towards restoring the Kruger House for all to enjoy. Kruger Day was celebrated as a public holiday in South Africa from 1952 until 1993 but ceased being a public holiday when the new Public Holiday Act of 1994 replaced the Public Holiday Act of 1952. Every year citizens of South Africa are allowed free entry to the museum on October 10.

Daar sal water, koffie en tee beskikbaar wees. l The Wierda Bridge Community Police Forum (CPF) sectors 1 and 3 are hosting a moneyraising and jumble sale event on November 5 from 09:00 on the corner of Shirley and Broadway streets. Support the fight against crime by donating items for the sale. The CPF invites the community to support them. Enquiries: Wilma Olivier on 082-756-2758. l Daar word 29 Oktober ’n Lenteloop by die Fonteinedal gehou. Navrae: Elma by 082-562-5244. l A Gospel Festival in aid of charity takes place at the Gift Acres Convenience Centre in Lynnwood on October 29 from 16:00 to 22:00. The entrance fee is canned food. Refreshments will be on sale, but residents need to bring their own chairs. Featuring artists like JJ Stevens, Rudie Muller and Randburg Men’s Choir, to name but a few will entertain guests. The festival is held in aid of the Love and Care Feeding Scheme that feeds about 65 underprivileged children per day. Enquiries: Johan Fourie on 082-7491764. l Erasmus Kasteel, of die ‘Spookhuis’ bied weer ’n toer vir nuuskieriges in Oktober aan. Kom geniet ’n toer deur hierdie besonderse Victoriaanse huis. Social issues inspire up and coming artist Gavin Emmanuel

Marguerite Wills, Queen Razzel Dazzel of the Dazzling Red Hat Divas, shares scones and tea with Contessa de la Bonita, Susan van Dyk.

Divas in red enjoy life Valeska Abreu Red hats and purple outfits, worn by women over the age of 50 is not a sight seen everyday and that is exactly why the Dazzling Red Hat Divas draw attention each time they go out. The Dazzling Red Hat Divas is a new chapter formed under the original Red Hat Society, that started in America in 1998. The Red Hat Society began as a result of a few women deciding to greet middle age with verve, humour and fun. This is a platform where a group of women over the age of 50 come together and explore life with divine wine tastings, elegant dinners and even bowling. “We come together and do things to keep our spirits alive, we have fun and that is what counts,” said Marguerite Wills, Queen Razzel Dazzel of the Dazzling Red Hat Divas.

According to Wills, the chapter gets together once a month. Each member gets a chance to plan a fun evening for the women. “We do anything that is interesting and fun, such as mosaic, movies or dinners. It’s really a nice opportunity to mix with other women and take a day out of your normal life,” said Susan van Dyk, known as the Contessa de la Bonita within the chapter. “We currently have 13 women in our chapter and invite more to join us,” said Wills. The Red Hat Society was started by Sue Ellen, in America, after she decided to give her friends a vintage red hat and a copy of the poem, Warning, by Jenny Joseph as birthday presents. The women then decided to go out for tea and wear purple coloured dresses that didn’t fit with their red hats to complete the poem’s image and that is how the society was born.

He is soft-spoken and has a smile that lights up the room and once you mention the word art, Michael Selekane’s eyes start sparkling. Rekord caught up with Selekane at the Ifa Lethu offices in Groenkloof. “I love the smell of oil on canvass,” said Selekane as he ushers Rekord into a boardroom at the Ifa Lethu offices that are filled with Selekane’s artwork. Selekane was born in a tiny village in Mpumalanga in 1986 and his first encounter with art came during his primary school years. “There was an art class in primary school and I went to that class as a way of dodging other classes, because most of the time nothing was done in that class,” said Selekane. As time went on the class became operational and held an art competition, which he was selected for.

“I had a teacher who spotted the talent in me and supplied me with art materials,” added Selekane. The highlight of his career came in 2007 after completing matric. Selekane joined Tshwaraganang Art School in Mabopane. “The school exposed me to various forms of visual art and it was then that I realised I had fallen in love with the oil painting medium,” said Selekane. During the same year Selekane won the Ifa Lethu art prize, which cemented his conviction to seek advanced training in art. Social and political issues inspire most of Selekane’s paintings. Selekane exhibited at Grahamstown Art Festival and the Pretoria Art Museum this year. He will auction two of his works in London next year in March, during the London Celebrates South African Heritage moneyraising event that will be hosted by the Ifa Lethu Foundation and renowned jazz artist, Hugh Masekela.

Solank my lyf gesond is, is ek gelukkig.

Athlete revels in motorised knee Suzette van Huyssteen The first ever motorised prosthetic knee in South Africa was introduced in Pretoria on October 14. Icexpress Progressive Prosthetics announced at the Innovation Hub that two of their clients, paralympic athletes Kim Robinson and Derik Schutte, are the first in South Africa to be fitted with the Össur Power Knee. The motorised knee is a ‘smart’ prosthetic limb with the ability to recognise and memorise its user’s walking style while making real time adjustments based on changes in speed, terrain and stride. Schutte (19) an above-knee amputee, who won a bronze medal in the F42 javelin event at the International Paralympic Committee World Championships held in New Zealand, was fitted with the Power Knee technology for the first time on October 14. “After only two days, I was able to shift and share the weight that I usually put on my below-knee side, or good leg, to the above-knee side. I don’t tire as fast as I did previously,” Schutte said. Icexpress Progressive Prosthetics is seen as the market leader specialising in advanced prosthetics and bionics in South Africa. “We are honoured to be the first in South Africa to offer the Össur Power Knee as well as similar bionic technology to our clients. Our aim is to assist prosthetic users to get back to leading normal, happy and physically active lives,” Johan Snyders, CEO of Icexpress said. According to Snyders the Össur Power Knee and other advances made in prosthetic technology make it even more realistic for persons with amputations to live their lives without limitations.

Teamwork defies the danger of their walks

Imagine being blindfolded and then forced to face peak hour traffic, crossing some of the busiest intersections in Pretoria every morning and afternoon with your guide dog as your only SatNav. It is a walk few of us will complete successfully. For Shane Korff and his guide dog, Leroy, this scenario is their reality. Every morning they walk along 26th Street, then cross George Storrar Drive and Atterbury Road and back again in the afternoons. It’s a dangerous walk, but these two seem to have mastered the art of teamwork and patience. Shane has been living in Cecilia Street for the past four years and he works in the banking industry in the banking complex in Atterbury Road. “I live close to my work and walk to Spar, Brooklyn and even Menlyn. Leroy knows exactly where we’re going,” he laughed. Shane also said being visually impaired does not mean that a person can’t function. “I live by myself and I cook for myself. Being blind does not mean that I’m helpless.” When it comes to traffic and the motorists, Shane admits that Leroy gets a bit nervous because some motorists ignore traffic rules and pose a danger. “There is a big traffic circle on Selati Street and motorists seem to ignore the yield sign. They enter the circle at high speed and then hoot when other motorists cut in front of them. I can hear how fast things are happening and Leroy sits at the circle until it’s safe for us to cross. High speed drivers make it very dangerous for pedestrians and extremely dangerous for

Shane Korff and Leroy on their way home.

Leroy and me.” He appeals to motorists to be responsible drivers. “I have not been stuck in a traffic jam for long. I’m sure its frustrating but lets just be patient, follow the rules of the road and lets all get home safely,” he said.

Edward Jardim hands over his latest war documentary DVD, Attack on Cassinga, to Richard Henry. Henry is the curator of the Ditsong National Museum of Military History in Johannesburg.

War video documentary brings history to life Natashia Hudson

Edward Jardim, a Pretoria based videographer with a passion for history, has recently produced his second video documentary, Assault on Cassinga, on the controversial airborne attack that took place on May 4, 1978, at Cassinga during the Angolan Border War. This DVD is a follow-up on the documentary, Attack on Cassinga, which was also produced by Jardim and released in 2009. Jardim, who received no major funding and handled all the creative processes himself, spent most of his spare time during the last two years putting his latest war documentary together. The video documentary re-

volves around the first full-scale airborne attack that the South African Defence Force carried out. The target of the air raid was a South West African People’s Organisation (Swapo) base in Cassinga, Angola. The 60-minute documentary features exclusive interviews with Lieutenant General Denis Earp (former chief of the South African Airforce 1984-1988) and Lieutenant General Jannie Geldenhuys (former chief of the South African Airforce 1986-1990). It also features exclusive interviews with helicopter pilot, Brigadier General John Church and fighter pilots, Major General MJ du Plessis and Lieutenant Colonel Dries Marais. The DVD pro-

vides a detailed account on the role that the South African Airforce played during the dramatic attack. According to Jardim he did not want to become entangled in the controversy and politics surrounding the battle that took place that day, (Swapo claimed the site targeted by the South African Airforce was a refugee camp), but wanted to give soldiers the opportunity to tell their stories. He said he would love to make a third documentary as told from Swapo’s perspective, but is having difficulty getting hold of the right people. Jardim feels there is currently a shortage of South African war video documentaries and hopes that his video documentaries can help to fill this gap.

A photography competition for local young people is looking for the next Ernest Cole. The University of Pretoria, in partnership with the Hasselblad Foundation, the Swedish Embassy in Pretoria, the American Embassy in Pretoria and supported by the Ifa Lethu Foundation, opened the Ernest Cole Photographer Exhibition on its campus in Mamelodi. Ernest Cole is a world-renowned photographer born in Eersterust and grew up in Mamelodi. Cole died in New York in America in 1990. The exhibition of this worldrenowned apartheid-era photographer started on September 29 and has been well received at the Mamelodi campus of the University of Pretoria. It closes on November 30. As a tangible attempt to connect Cole’s work with the Mamelodi community, the partners in the exhibition are hosting an educational programme as well as a photography competition for local pupils. The photography competition is a key component in the

activities around this acclaimed photographer’s work and will culminate in the top three entrants receiving various prizes, not the least being a threemonth internship with one of the country’s leading corporate photographers, Fanus Schoeman of Live Moments. Schoeman, who spent over 20 years as a Defence Force photographer, now owns Live Moments. “I feel strongly about passing on my experience and skills to the next generation of young, talented would-be professional photographers,” said Schoeman. “They not only need the technical aspects of the profession but also the business and marketing skills required to establish themselves as truly professional photographers in whatever specialisation they choose.” The competition is open to young people from 16 to 22 years. The American Embassy also offers digital cameras to the top three entrants. Those wishing to enter can obtain an entry form from the University of Pretoria, Mamelodi campus at the library.

Angelique Herberg, office administrator of the Young Peoples Department at Hatfield Christian Church, snuggle under the biggest hand knitted blanket in the world.

The Guinness World of Records has given the giant blanket knitted and sewn together by the women of the Hatfield Christian Church in Pretoria, the thumbs up. The blanket was officially given world record status last week. In an e-mail the Guinness World of Records’ management team confirmed that the Ladies Ministry of Hatfield Christian Church had successfully set the new Guinness World Records’ title for the largest hand knitted blanket, non-crochet. Project leader and Ladies’ Ministry head, Ingrid Trusler, said there was great excitement when the announcement was made last Sunday at the church service. “Hundreds of women contributed time and effort to this project and it was only through team effort that we achieved our

record,” Trusler said. In June, the big blanket was divided into 361 individual blankets that were handed out to underprivileged communities in three areas of Pretoria. The blanket was 557,34sqm in size and weighed over 332kg. 3 610 balls of yarn were knitted into 12 635 squares. It took an estimated 45 000 hours of knitting, the equivalent of five years and 37 days, if one person knitted for 24hours per day. Each blanket has John 3:16, For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life knitted on it. “The people who knitted prayed while they knitted and we believe that each blanket is blessed and will touch lives,” Trusler said. Enquiries: Ingrid Trusler on 083-7385624.

The Battle of the Bookworms Competition, an annual inter-schools competition to promote reading among high school pupils and encourage interaction among high schools in their community, recently took place at the Irene Village Mall. Each school sends a team of eight representatives consisting of four junior and four senior pupils. The team members were selected after participating in internal competitions in each school. This involved reading a number of books to select the top eight readers in each school with the result that a large number of pupils were reading for pleasure. Eight books from different genres were chosen for example biographies, science fiction, adventure, romance and mystery, in English and Afrikaans. The aim is for the pupils to demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the selected books during a quiz as well as a rapid response section. The competition was started by the Tshwane South Media Teachers’ cluster in 2009. The first competition was hosted at Sutherland High School and won by the team from Lyttelton Manor High School.

The Battle of the Bookworms took place on October 20 outside Exclusive Books at the Irene Village Mall. The venue was prepared for the Battle of the Bookworms and the pupils arrived enthused and excited. The competition consisted of questions asked on the nine books. Each school had to answer three rounds of questions on the first book. Then a Rapid Fire Section followed where the pupils had to race to be the fas test to push a buzzer, to be able to answer the question correctly to gain points. The other books were tested where pupils needed to answer word puzzles to form a word and in the end they had to complete a phrase. The first to complete the phrase after solving all the puzzles was the winner of that section. The spirit among the pupils from Hoërskool Centurion, Lyttelton Manor High School, Sutherland High School and Hoërskool Zwartkop was contagious and made passers-by stop and join in the fun. This year’s winner was Sutherland High School (60 points) followed by Lyttelton Manor High School (58 points). The pupils were all awarded a prize from Café Bugatti and Mugg and Bean and the top two teams received books from Exclusive Books Centurion branch.

Thandi Engelbrecht, from Sutherland High School, Khilona Natha, from Lyttelton Manor High School, Norman Kratz from Hoërskool Centurion and Michelle Mostert from Hoërskool Zwartkop, battled it out in the Battle of the Bookworms Competition that took place earlier this month at Irene Village Mall.

On the wings of a silver bird Natashia Hudson The joy was evident among a group of young amputees who each got the opportunity to fly in a Cessna 172 aircraft and a Robinson R44 helicopter at the Wonderboom Airport during the recent Give a Kid Wings event. The children couldn’t contain their excitement as the day, which included aircraft trips and a display by the Wonderboom fire brigade, unfolded. The aim of the event, which was hosted by the Jumping Kids Prosthetic Fund, Icexpress Progressive Prosthetics and the Pretoria Flying School, was to inspire disabled children and to provide them with an unforgettable and fun-filled day. Johan Snyders and Werner Nel dreamed up the concept together. Snyders, the CEO of Icexpress Progressive Prosthetics, founded the Jumping Kids Prosthetic Fund after seeing the value that prosthetics can add to a disabled child’s life. The fund provides quality prosthetics to less fortunate children free of charge. “We were wondering what we could do to make a difference. With prosthetics, the children are not disabled, they are simply less abled.” Nel (22), who lost his right leg in a motorcycle accident two years ago and is in the process of completing his commercial pilot’s licence, understands what Snyders is talking about. “When I received my prosthetic leg I realised there was no reason why I could not still achieve my goal of becoming a commercial pilot. Snyders started Jumping Kids through which he wants to equip disabled children to allow them to become more mobile. Together we want to give these children the opportunity to ‘fly’ in every sense of the word.” The Jumping Kids Fund, that relies on sponsorships and donations from public

Nhlahla Nyatsane sits next to pilot Werner Nel and gives a big thumbs-up sign after landing.

and private organisations, aims to help young amputees to follow their dreams and achieve their goals. Nel feels strongly that these children’s dreams should not become restricted simply because of a disability. “Those who want to become pilots should see that even that is possible.” It is estimated that one out of 13 people in South Africa, of which less than 1% is currently employed, has a physical disability.

Crawford College was recently named the Pretoria School Quiz champions for this year’s competition. From left are Kevin Johnson, Varsity College national stakeholder manager, Liezl Thompson, Varsity College Pretoria principal, Jarno Sneyders De Vogel, Su-Mari Roux, André Ivan, Tinus Ferreira, Candice Joy, Crawford College teacher and Nicole Flint, former Miss South Africa.

School crowned as quiz champions 21 top schools competed for the coveted title but in the end there could only be one winner

Varsity College Pretoria hosted its fourth annual School Quiz recently, at Pretoria Boys’ High School. A total of 21 of Pretoria’s top schools including Abbotts College, Hillview High School, Hoërskool Oos-Moot, Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool and Pretoria High School for Girls entered teams. Nicole Flint, former Miss South Africa, hosted the event that consisted of questions from seven categories including history, sport and general knowledge. As the quiz started, the various teams did extremely well, but the competition soon became stiff during the second and third round. The top teams were from Crawford College, Hoërskool Montana, Pretoria Boys’ High School and Hoërskool Waterkloof.

Unfortunately, only one team could receive the stunning Albert Einstein School Quiz floating trophy. Crawford College was crowned the champions for the Varsity College Pretoria School Quiz competition, taking home a cash prize of R1 000 per team member and a full two-year Varsity College bursary. Sutherland High School took second place, banking a cash prize of R500 per team member and a full one-year Varsity College bursary. In third place was Pretoria Boys’ High School, taking home a prize of R250 per team member and a full oneyear Varsity College bursary. The event was held to allow the pupils participate in an event that was both fun and educational.

MOTORS

Keep your car safe on the road these holidays You’ve ticked all the right boxes when it comes to making sure that everything is in place for that end of year holiday, but can you say the same for your car’s tyres? Tyre safety may not be as exciting as splashing out on your 100th pair of designer shoes, but it is well worth the time and money. After all, failing to make sure your vehicle has the right ‘shoes’ can turn your dream holiday into a roadside disaster. We all have a favourite pair of shoes that we wear until the heels have eroded beyond recognition of their former glory. Just like the heels of your shoes, tyres have tread that wears down with driving. The more worn your tyres, the less traction and grip you will have on the road, meaning your braking distance will increase and you are more likely to skid BEST PRICES ON SERVICES

when driving in the rain. In fact, the legal tread depth limit in South Africa is a minimum of 1mm across the entire circumference of the tyre. If you are not sure whether you are legal, ask a wheel and tyre professional to point out the tread wear indicators on your tyres. Wearing shoes that are too tight or too loose can be fashion suicide or just plain unpleasant. The right tyre pressure can also be the difference between life and death. Don’t assume the pressure is two bars, which many women do when they chant ‘two please’ to the friendly petrol attendant. Each vehicle has recommended pressures which you will find in the sill of the driver’s door or inside the fuel cap. Rather take the time to check these and make sure the pressure is correct. Over inflated tyres erode quickly at their

centre, while under inflated tyres wear on the outsides quicker. Under inflated tyres overheat easily and can cause tyre bursts, which is notorious for road fatalities. Every fashionista knows to keep a spare pair of shoes in the boot of their car in case of a mishap. Before you get on your way, also check that you have a spare tyre and that it is inflated to the right pressure and has the right amount of tread, at least 1mm, for a safe journey. If your vehicle is fitted with run-flat tyres you won’t have a spare. Staying in your lane is a basic rule, but neglecting the balancing and alignment of your wheels can make you lose your step. If your vehicle is shaking or pulling to one side while driving, you need to get your wheels balanced and aligned.

Sometimes it’s very subtle so make sure you check your wheel balancing and alignment every 10 000km or before every major trip. This not only improves the handling of your vehicle but also extends the tread life of your tyres. The more care you take to look after your tyres, the longer they will last, which means you have more money to spend on your summer wardrobe. These are just some of the basics for keeping your tyres in check and staying safe on the road. We suggest that you take your vehicle to your nearest wheel and tyre specialist like Tiger Wheel & Tyre for a free safety check. If you have to replace a tyre due to worn tread or damage, never replace only one tyre at a time as this will affect the handling of your vehicle. Always replace two or four tyres.

Rekord experiences many problems with clients requesting us to comply within any possible way, to give preference to their advertisements versus that of other clients. This leads to advertisements starting with A1, Attention, or 000, making no sense to the reader in order to make a logical conclusion as to what the contents of the advertisement is about. It spoils the presentation of our classified advertisements and also confuses the reader who wants to see at a glance an advertisement leading him to a decision regarding his needs.

Francois van Tonder from Pretoria, Michael de Nysschen from Bloemfontein, Carel Smit from Randfontein and their manager, Nico Rautenbach from Pretoria, will represent South Africa at this event. Van Tonder is the most experienced shooter and has participated internationally for a number of years. He achieved many accolades. The group hopes to achieve a team award and possibly individual medals also. Teams from all over the continent will participate in the Africa Shooting Championships. All participants will endeavour to secure qualification for the 2012 Olympic Games in London by achieving a quota place. The respective members compete regularly in all provincial championships. Fighting his way through the rough waters Pierre van Leeuwe from Meyersdal, Pretoria, is a member of the Pretoria Canoe Club based at Roodeplaat Dam. He enjoyed the challenge of the toughest river canoe race in South Africa, the Lowveld Crocodile Canoe Race enormously and finished successfully in the 51st place. While Gauteng paddlers have few river sections to find roaring and exciting rapids, the Lowveld Crocodile is no doubt the challenge of challenges for K1 (single) canoeists. Here Van Leeuwe contemplates his situation, finding himself stuck on a rock in the turbulent rapid of the Lowveld Crocodile Canoe Race.

Canoeist ready for any challenge Wayne van Nikkelen-Kuyper stays in Sinoville, Pretoria, and has a reputation for taking on every river challenge known to canoeists in South Africa. His goal is to improve in skill and experience with every year that passes. With 107 paddlers beginning the race at the Gauteng K1 river championships on the Lowveld Crocodile River, the total number of finishers of the 50km race was only 80. Van Nikkelen-Kuyper finished 50th in 4:57. Here he negotiates the intimidating Carisbrook rapid on this well-known river.

Ride for charity in cycle tour Late entrants can still take part

Entries have closed for the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour 2012. Everything, however, is not lost for the sleepyheads. The Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust has announced a key departure for the 2012 Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour. They have limited individual online entries to 30 000 and have opened the remaining 5 000 to charities and corporates in bonds. One bond contains ten entries and these are allocated on a first come first

serve basis to charities and corporates who apply to the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust. The great benefit to charities that purchase bonds is that they are permitted to ‘late enter’ the names of their bond participants up until January 13, 2012, which is only eight weeks prior to the event. Participants wishing to know more about charity bonds can phone the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust on 021-681-4333.

Foto: simondp@ actionimage

Bekende rugbyspeler sluit by Klofies aan

Koos Venter

The famous Russian chess player, Garry Kasparov, will visit South Africa in November.

Chess champion in SA

Garry Kasparov, World Chess Champion for eight years and the world’s top rated player for 21 years, is coming to South Africa from Moscow in November. This special occasion is part of a joint venture with the Pretoria-based chess educational project Moves for Life (MFL). President Jacob Zuma is the patron of Moves for Life. Kasparov announced that he wishes to link his Kasparov Chess Foundation to MFL to take the successful MFL formula to other African countries. He has added that he plans to work with MFL to make Johannesburg the chess capital of Africa. Kasparov said he was greatly inspired by the words of President Zuma last October, when he spoke so movingly on the many benefits of chess for children. He said he was happy to join Zuma and

the South African Moves for Life programme in a commitment to bring chess to schools across the country and for turning Johannesburg into the continental chess capital. Kasparov will be visiting South Africa as the guest of MFL from November 12 to 15 to promote the Kasparov Chess Foundation link up with the Moves for Life programme. Mickey Scheepers, MFL operations manager, said the game of chess impacts positively on maths, science and comprehension abilities, while also imparting valuable life skills to children. In learning to play chess, children are mastering a wide range of skills such as pattern recognition, classifying information, reasoning by analogy, following principles, calculating possible sequences of events and critical thinking.
