Three households in the east of Pretoria faced the might of the law last week after refusing to complete their census forms. The heads of the three households in Waterkloof were charged with non-compliance when census enumerators had to leave emptyhanded after they were shown the door. All three families meanwhile completed their forms and the charges were dropped. According to Statistician Gene

ral, Pali Lehohla, it was necessary to act in accordance with the Statistics Act to force people into sharing their information who refuse to do so willingly. Article 16 of the Act makes it compulsory for respondents to answer any questions officials from Statistics South Africa may ask. “The data is used for statistical purposes. We need to have accurate responses to ensure the statistics from the census is correct. No information will be shared on individual level,” Lehohla told the media.In Pretoria Gardens, some

residents have to be recounted after their enumerator went missing with residents’ completed forms. According to Trevor Oosterwyk, Census 2011 spokesperson, the census enumerator panicked when he realised that some of the collected forms got wet from the rain and they had to be completed again. Oosterwyk said the enumerator was taken to the police where he signed an affidavit to explain what had happened to the original forms. Oosterwyk said things were on track, however and that 97% of households in South Africa had

already been counted. He urged all South Africans who had not been counted yet to get into contact with Stats SA either via the call centre or the website so an enumerator could be sent to their homes. Oosterwyk also said that a mopup phase would be launched today. “Enumerators will phase visit homes to ensure that all questionnaires are completed and collected again. No trace of kidnapping Valeska Abreu There is no concrete evidence to support the allegations that a baby was kidnapped during a smash and grab incident on Jacqueline Drive last week Wednesday. The Garsfontein CPF sent out a SMS last week warning motorists and the community to be aware because a baby was apparently kidnapped from a car on the corner of Jacqueline Drive and Atterbury Road. Rekord also received information last week from a domestic worker who alleged to have witnessed a smash and grab and a man running away with a crying baby. Monica Mladi, the domestic worker, told Rekord she was at the bus stop when she heard a baby crying before seeing a

man running with a baby in his hands. “We went to the women in the car and she was just crying and blowing the hooter for someone to stop the man. I called a security guard to come and help and he ran after the man and the woman followed in her car,” said Mladi. Neither the Garsfontein nor Boschkop police had any such incident reported at the stations, but are aware of the rumours of the incident. CPF members told Rekord on Monday morning that the incident is believed to be a hoax, as there was no proof of such a kidnapping at any police station. Sergeant Lynette Erasmus from Garsfontein police said no case of kidnapping or even domestic violence was reported, which could be linked to this specific incident.

Raw sewerage has been left to run into streams alongside Garsfontain Road, next to the Moreleta Plaza, after the ward councillor reported the problem to the metro three month ago. Rekord contacted the metro to ask why the complaint had been ignored and was told that there was no record of the sewe rage flow problem registered on their system. According to the metro, a team was sent to investigate the matter 24 hours later. Ward councillor, Nick Pascoe, strongly opposes the metro’s remarks saying he reported the matter in August. Pascoe also pointed out that he was disappointed in the Tshwane metro for their slow response to flush the problem away.

“I would think a municipality regards raw sewerage flowing down the street a cause for concern. What will happen during the summer rains? “This stream will turn into a river, carrying the dangerous spill even further. Perhaps the metro is waiting for the rain to flush the sewerage away.” Pascoe alleges that he reported the spill on August 15 and when nothing was done, he again reported the matter on September 20. “I received an e-mail from the regional executive director of Region 6 wherein he states that my report had been logged. “This is not only an incredibly dangerous health risk for commuters who walk past, but the constant flow of water also contri butes to the degeneration of Garstfontein

Road,” he said. Dikeledi Phiri, spokesperson for the Tshwane metro responded to the allegations saying that their system showed no trace of the councillor’s report. “The Waste Water Collection (WWC) Section does not find this complaint on their system. The address is very vague and difficult to trace on the system. The reference number is not from WWC or on the reporting centre’s system.” Phiri said a standby team was sent to the centre on the corner of Garsfontein Road and, with the assistance of the complex’s security personnel, was shown a sewer blockage at a gully at the back of the buil ding. “The team cleared this blockage. Teams will be sent to check the sewers in the vicinity of the centre for other possible blockages,” she said.

Residents in Silverton where shocked after they discovered that police had found bones and three skulls on a plot in the area. On Friday Silverton police responded to a call-out to the area and came across the unusual findings. According to Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini, police spokesperson, a 31-year-old male suspect was arrested. “The skulls of three victims as well as bones were found. It is believed it’s that of a woman and her two children. Police established that the victims were staying on the plot before disappearing earlier this year,” he said. Dlamini said the suspect was linked to the murders by information from witnesses and evidence found at the scene. The suspect is due to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court soon.

A suspect was wounded in the cheek after he allegedly broke into a residential property in the early hours of Sunday morning. It is believed the owner of the property in Erasmuskloof approached the suspect, who met him outside. According to Brigadier André Wiese, of the Brooklyn police, the owner fired a warning shot but the suspect kept approaching him so he shot him in the cheek. “It is also believed the suspect was involved in two other house breaking cases in the area within 48 hours. We are investiga ting these cases,” said Wiese.

Gavin Emmanuel The underworld of drugs and human trafficking have infiltrated Pretoria. This comes after an electronics shop in Soutter Street in Pretoria West was reportedly robbed last week Sunday. Police later discovered that it was in fact a drug related clash. The clash resulted in a shoot-out that left one of the suspects wounded. The suspect later dumped his vehicle, that was full of bullet holes, at Fountains Valley south of Botha Avenue in Centurion. According to police reports six wellknown gangsters from Johannesburg got into an argument with members of a notorious Pakistani crime syndicate who owns the electronics shop in Pretoria West. According to police reports, Jason Domingues, a former bouncer and confidante of Czech billionaire and fugitive, Radovan Krejcir, was wounded in the shoot-out. Krejcir is linked to the murder of nightclub owner, Lolly Jackson,. According to police spokesperson, Colonel Lungelo Dlamini, investigations led them to Bedfordview in Johannesburg, where Domingues was arrested. “Police found a Toyota Hilux full of bullet holes and bloodstains abandoned at Fountains Valley. After running the registration number, police caught up with Domingues at a house in Bryanston where he was arrested,” said Dlamini. The case was brought to the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday, but was struck off the roll pending further investigation. Dlamini added that the leader of the Pakistani crime syndicate, suspected of shooting Domingues, is allegedly involved in an international web of drug smuggling and human trafficking.

Some protestors refused to march to the Union Buildings, because of sleeping in the cold while it was believed that Malema slept at a fancy hotel. “We were promised a good breakfast this morning, but all we got were rolls. We are tired and hungry,” said a disgruntled protestor. When Malema arrived at the Caledo nian stadium on Friday morning, he called the masses for their ‘appointment at the Union Buildings’. Some delayed the process of joining the march because of their grievances with Malema, but by the time the procession reached Beatrix Street there were thousands of them singing and chanting. The march was part of a two-day process that started in Johannesburg where memorandums were handed to the Chamber of Mines and the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and ended with their last memorandum handed over to newly appointed Public Works Minister, Thulas Nxesi, at the Union Buildings in Pretoria. The protestors, together with the leadership of ANCYL, waited for over an hour in the scorching heat as Malema refused to hand over the memorandum to any Director General. “We do not want to hand over the memorandum to any ordinary government employee, we prefer a minister or deputy minister,” said Malema. Malema further told protestors that if a minister is not available at the Union Buildings, they must phone them and they can come to the Union Buildings in a jiffy as they are driven in blue light

Vanessa Lynch, the executive director and founder of the DNA project held a talk at the Sci-Enza building at the University of Pretoria recently about the use of DNA evidence in crime scene investigations and the establishment of a DNA database in South Africa. A number of students in various fields such as law and science as well as some police members attended the talk. The DNA project is a registered non-profit organisation that recognises the critical importance of DNA evidence in the resolution of crime. Lynch started the project after she faced the loss of her father several years ago in a gruesome murder and the perpetrator was never caught.

Lynch appeals to the public to build enough awareness around the importance of a DNA database so that the necessary legislation can be passed in South Africa. “DNA places the criminal at the scene forever and is much more reliable than any other form of evidence,” Lynch said. The project’s aim is to advance the justice system through the expanded use of DNA evidence in conjunction with a national DNA criminal intelligence database, also known as a National DNA Database. “There are some underlining issues that need to be addressed in this country and once this is accomplished we can bring down the crime rate,” said Lynch. Lynch concluded that the larger the database, the better chance of identification and exclusion.

The first of many exciting jean-drives that forms part of Rekord’s Jeans 5000 campaign was held at The Grove Mall this past weekend. According to Leanne Nel, marketing manager at The Grove Mall, about 300 jeans were donated on Saturday and they are expecting much more donations. Not only were shoppers, family and friends entertained with an exciting fashion show, but also with various dance items. This project is an initiative launched by the Rekord Charity Fund to collect 5 000 jeans (old or new) to distribute among the poor throughout Pretoria during the festive season. “Clothes are more durable than toys. Protes vir sirkusdiere Natalie Grobler en Suzette van Huyssteen Springmielies, spookasem en swaaiende artistes was beslis nie op hierdie groep mense se agenda toe hulle die Brian Boswell-sirkus voorverlede Saterdag besoek het nie. Die ongeveer 25 betogers van die Take Action for Circus Animals (Taca) wou eerder hul punt bewys dat geen wilde diere in ’n sirkus hoort nie. “Ons het nie ’n probleem met sirkusse nie, mits dit sonder diere gehou word. Om diere aan ’n permanente staat van opsluiting bloot te stel is nie goed vir hulle nie,” het ’n betoger en lid van Taca, wat verkies om anoniem te bly, gesê. Sy het gesê sirkusdiere word geforseer om in beknopte omstandighede te bly en spandeer hul hele lewe op die pad terwyl hulle van een sirkus na die ander reis. “Hulle word gedwing om toertjies te leer wat nie deel van hul natuur is nie en word weerhou van vryheid soos wat dit bedoel is,” het sy gesê. Volgens die betoger is Taca se doelwit om die lyding van sirkusdiere te ontbloot en mense te oortuig dat die diere in die natuur hoort. “Selfs al is daar geen fisiese mishandeling nie, is ’n sirkus van nature verskriklik wreed en onnattuurlik. of sirkusse goed na hulle diere kyk sal lewe in die natuurlike habitat nooit vervang kan word met ’n lewe op vervoerwaens of op ’n sirkusterrein nie,” het sy gesê. Mary-Ann van der Byl, ’n betoger, het gesê dat sy teen die manier gekant is waarop die diere geleer word. “Hulle gebruik swepe en ander meganismes om die diere te leer. In plaas daarvan om vertroue te bou, dwing hulle die diere om in vrees te leef. Dit is een van die redes hoekom die diere so gehoorsaam aan die mense is,” het sy gesê. Georgina Boswell, woordvoerder van die Brian Boswell-sirkus, het gesê dat hulle positiewe opleiding gebruik wat beteken dat hulle hul diere aanmoedig om verskillende toertjies te doen deur hulle met lekkernye te beloon. “Die goeie toestand van ons diere spreek vanself. Ons diere is geweldig belangrik vir ons en ons kyk goed na hulle. Hulle is in top kondisie en ons is oop vir inwoners om self ondersoek te kom instel,” het sy gesê. Boswell het gesê hul diere is gewoond daaraan om op die pad te wees en toon geen gedragsverandering nie. Volgens Boswell word al hul diere met liefde grootgemaak en om hulle vry te laat is nie noodwendig die beste keuse nie.

A resident from Villieria writes: I want to thank the brave black man that risked his life to aid my daughter during a hijack attempt on October 12. My daughter, who was on her way home, stopped at the traffic light in Boom Street when a man reached through the window, brandished a knife, grabbed the ignition key and demanded her cell phone. A black man, presumably from the taxi

behind her, came to her aid and overpowered the assailant. He said to the man ‘it is you people that give us a bad name’. He asked if my daughter was okay and if she had lost anything. She told him her car key was missing. He retrieved the key and handed it to her. My daughter was very upset and grateful to be alive, but failed to take much notice of her rescuer or where he came from. Thank you very much.

Coming of age Paradox Pless wishes he was born in another era. This rushed modern life of the Stone Age is not for sissies. But the present age was getting to him. The company he worked for, Stone Implements Inc was starting to retrench people because they could not afford to keep up with new technology. Iron implements were all the rage now and countries, like China, were starting to dump iron on their market. The new-world rulers, the Neanderthals, were trying to change the name of Pless’ city to Gondwanaland. Imagine bringing up his two hundred children without a sense of history and permanency and forever moving about like a continent adrift. Things around him were changing quickly. If you took too long to make a decision you might be in for a surprise. Like the leader of the Gondwana Youth League. He and his followers decided

to claim and expropriate a piece of land, which he claimed was ancestral land. Where he got his ancestors from, nobody knows, because the present generation was only the sixth generation of people on earth. O, for the sweet life of being a bachelor or the time when he only had one wife, Mrs Pless. She however eloped with a guy called Dr Raymond Dart after he unearthed some secrets about her. Property in the east of city stays constant The up-market suburbs in the east of Pretoria have always been and will continue to be, a great investment area for property buyers, said Martin Potgieter, owner of Remax Jacaranda (New East). He said while demand for property was slightly depressed during the recession pe-

riod, for the most part, the property market in the east of Pretoria remained constant. “This area has proven to deliver a good return on investment for property buyers, which is largely due to its excellent location in terms of proximity to important amenities. There are good schools in the area, along with a university, superb shopping malls and the Gautrain station situated in Hatfield. The area also has a certain status that appeals to buyers looking to live in and around the upper echelon of society,” he said. According to Potgieter, sales transactions in 2011 have had their ups and downs, but remained fairly steady overall. “Trends in the market have been difficult to predict and there have been a few driving factors that had an influence on market sentiment such as political and

economic uncertainty. As soon as rumours circulated of a possible double-dip recession approaching, demand reduced,” said Potgieter. He noted the area can be divided into two regions: one part consists of Water kloof, Brooklyn and Menlo Park, which is affectionately known as the Old East, while the New East consists of Faerie Glen, Moreleta Park and various security estates such as Silverlakes, Woodhill and Boardwalk Manor and Meander. Potgieter said it seems as if the suburbs in the Old East have been less affected by the recession as houses are selling for prices that are similar to those achieved in 2008. Properties, however, in the New East have reduced in price and in some cases are selling for up to 25% less than they did in 2008. “Sellers that have not reduced their

Invest for retirement Research anticipates that close on ten million South Africans will be retiring in the next 25 years. The results of the Sanlam 2011 Benchmark Pensioner Survey indicate that 80% of pensioners have not completely achieved their predetermined retirement goals. On average, 31% of the pensioners believe they have not saved enough for their capital to last for the rest of their lives and 33% of members currently have a monthly shortfall between their income and expenses. Adrian Goslett, CEO of Remax of Southern Africa, said it has been widely reported the South African retirement industry is under constant pressure to deliver sustainable benefits to its pensioners. He pointed to research from the Sanlam 2011 Benchmark Pensioner Survey where pensioners were very clear in their advice to start investing and saving as early as possible. “Property has always been a solid performing, long-term investment and therefore could be an ideal investment vehicle for those looking to add another element to their retirement policies and investments,” he said. He explains that if a person had to retire at 65 years of age, they will need 75% of the income earned when working to enable them to live a comfortable life. “Added to this, the income stream needs to be sustainable enough to last at least 30 or so years, given the current life expectancy statistics.” There are many investment options available for those who are looking to start building up a retirement portfolio, including savings mechanisms and various retirement plans. A well researched and solid property investments should also be considered as a key element of a retirement portfolio, as real estate remains one of the best performing asset classes, despite the recession and its effects on current property prices and demand. Buying a property also offers investors long-term appreciation opportunities and the potential for the property to contribute to a regular income stream. Goslett said there are two ways in which an established property portfolio can benefit retirees. One is an investment property retirees can use to generate an additional income. He notes that investment properties can also be sold to provide for a lump sum cash injection to retirement funds, once again provided that this property has been paid off before retirement age is reached. Added to this, an investment property can also provide extra avenues of equity to tap into.

The Gauteng women’s team and members of the Pretoria Military Volleyball Club, achieved gold in the ladies division at the recent SANDF Volleyball Championships.

Club delivers SA players The Pretoria Military Volleyball Club (PMVC) celebrated outstanding achievements recently. The club delivered a number of South African National Defence Force (SANDF) members who were selected for the SANDF national team, for the Gauteng North team and for the SA National Volleyball team. The club was formed in 1980 and is situated at the Airforce Gymnasium Melville Hall across from Zwartkop Airforce Base. This club is still a very competitive club within Gauteng and

specifically in the Gauteng North area. PMVC was crowned the champion of the 2008 and 2010 SANDF Volleyball Championships. This year the PMVC would like to play more volleyball in Gauteng and especially in Pretoria. The club also has social volleyball days where the community can join on a weekend and play against other teams in the Pretoria area. The club has also created a Facebook page (PMVC-volleyball)

where achievements, social days and competitions can be viewed. All volleyball players, beginners and current players, are welcome to contact the PMVC for information on social days or any other information they need on volleyball. The team is also looking for a sponsor or donations that could assist in promoting the game and PMVC would like to play in the Gauteng club championships held by Volleyball South Africa. Garry Kasparov, World Chess Champion for eight years and the world’s top rated player for 21 years, is coming to South Africa from Moscow in November. This special occasion is part of a joint venture with the Pretoria-based chess educational project Moves for Life (MFL). President Jacob Zuma is the Patron of Moves for Life. Kasparov announced that he wishes to link his Kasparov Chess Foundation to MFL to take the successful MFL formula to other African countries. He has added that he plans to work with MFL to make Johannesburg the chess capital of Africa. Kasparov said he was greatly inspired by the words of President Zuma last October, when he spoke so movingly on the many benefits of chess for children. He said

he was happy to join Zuma and the South African Moves for Life programme in a commitment to bring chess to schools across the country and for turning Johannesburg into the continental chess capital. Kasparov will be visiting South Africa as the guest of MFL from November 12 to 15 to promote the Kasparov Chess Foundation link up with the Moves for Life programme. Mickey Scheepers, MFL operations manager, said the game of chess impacts positively on maths, science and comprehension abilities, while also imparting valuable life skills to children. In learning to play chess, children are mastering a wide range of skills such as pattern recognition, classifying information, reasoning by analogy, following principles, calculating possible sequences of events and critical thinking.

SA-skietspan behaal tweede plek by wêreldkampioenskap

Die Suid-Afrikaanse nasionale veldtei kenluggeweerskietspan het onlangs tweede gekom op die 2011 Wêreld Veldteikenskiet kampioenskap in Italië. Sewentien lande het aan die kampioenskap deelgeneem, wat die Suid-Afrikaners se prestasie in perspektief stel. Vyf Pretorianers het deel van hierdie span gevorm, wat net 16 punte (uit ’n moontlike 600) agter Engeland geëindig het. Daarna het spanne soos Hongarye, Rusland, Duitsland en Spanje gevolg. Individuele spanlede van die Suid-Afri kaanse span het ook uitstekend gevaar in die individuele afdelings waaraan skuts van 27 lande deelgeneem het. Hul uitslae was as volg: Francois du Toit (WP) – junior

wêreldkampioen en sewende algeheel; Piet Breedt (spankaptein – Mpumalanga) – vier de algeheel; Natali Terblanche (Vrystaat) – tweede in vroue-afdeling; Lynn Strydom (Gauteng) – derde in vroue-afdeling. Die Proteaspan haal die Engelse span tydens elke wêreldkampioenskap in. Dié land skiet reeds 18 jaar langer as SuidAfrika veldteiken en een van hul huidige spanlede het nou aan sy 21e wêreldkampioenskap deelgeneem. School makes history at international tournament TuksSport High School made history when they won the 8th annual International Schools’ Golf Tournament. After fighting it out for three days on the courses at the Sun International’s Sun City resort, it was TuksSport High School that edged out Waterkloof on the final day after a nailbiting battle. St John’s College, in association with FNB Private Clients, hosted the event at the Sun City Resort recently. The 2011 field was made up of 32 school teams from all over Africa. The tournament was played over four days, utilising both Gary Player Country Club as well as the Lost City Golf

Course. After the gruelling four days of competition both TuksSport High School and Waterkloof finished in a tie at the top of the leader board. TuksSport High School was rewarded for their consistency and well balanced team to win the event on a count out. Jason Smith was the best performing player from the TuksSport High School team. This was TuksSport High School’s third big achievement in 2011. They also won the Dainfern School Challenge and the South African High School’s Championships earlier this year.

Die Blou Bulle se trofeekas op Loftus Versfeld is darem nie heeltemal leeg ná afloop van die 2011 seisoen nie. Nollis Marais, jong afrigter van die Blou Bulle se o.21-span, se puik seisoen is Saterdag in Johannesburg met ’n hoogtepunt afgesluit toe sy span hul eweknieë van die Haaie in die eindrondtel van die nasionale o.21-liga met 46-30 geklop het. Marais, wat verlede jaar as Tukkies se afrigter aangestel is en in sy eerste seisoen die Carltonbeker gewen het, het vanjaar nog ’n paar trappe op die suksesleer geklim. Eers het sy Tukkie-span die eindrondte van die Varsitybeker gehaal, waar hulle naelskraap teen die Ikeys verloor het. Daarna is hy aangestel as die Bulle se nuwe o.21-afrigter. Sy span het heel bo aan die punteleer geëindig en Saterdag het hulle die kroon gespan deur vir die eerste keer in vier jaar weer die kampioene te word. Die jong Bulle was van die begin af in beheer van die wedstryd en ná sewe minute het Schoeman die eerste drie gedruk.

Teen rustyd was die Bulle gerieflik met 22-10 voor, maar in die tweede helfte het hulle toegelaat dat die Haaie 20 punte aanteken om te probeer terugkom in die wedstryd. Die Bulletjies het hulle egter in die laaste vyf minute reggeruk en weer beheer oorgeneem, waarna plaasvervanger, flank Dalton Davis, die wedstryd beklink het met ’n drie in die doodsnikke. Ongelukkig het die Blou Bulle se o.19span nie dieselfde sukses as hul ouer broers behaal nie en het die eindrondte met 19-20 verloor. Hulle het, met ’n halfuur se spel oor, met 13-3 voorgeloop, maar toegelaat dat die Leeuwelpies terugkom in die wedstryd deur drie drieë af te staan in daardie laaste 30 minute. Die jong Leeus het egter die Nico Serfontein faktor aan hulle kant gehad. Serfontein, wat die Bulle aan die begin van die seisoen vir die Leeus verruil het ná jare as afrigting en mentor van jong Bloubulspanne, het die Leeus tot die uiterste gemotiveer. Die Bulletjies het boonop afgewyk van hul normale opwindende styl en skielik persentasierugby probeer speel, wat hul ondergang beteken het.
