BITCHES FOOD TRUCK BY EMILY KLINE

Hungry? Skip the same old routine of sitting in a restaurant and enjoy something new. Grab some grub at a local food truck! Food trucks are making a huge impact on dining and food in general. Set your taste buds on fire, save some cash, and enjoy your beautiful surroundings! In food truck culture, names are what make these mobile eateries standout among the rest. Even with interesting and eye catching names like Fidel Gastro’s and Rome’n Chariot, there is one stylish black truck rolling around the streets of Toronto that stands out amongst the rest: Gourmet Bitches. It promotes healthy living, but with attitude. Shontelle is Gourmet Bitches feisty owner. Working in the hospitality industry since the age of 18, Shaontelle has always had a love and passion for food and travel. The idea of owning and operating a food truck came to her when she was in Miami during one of her many travels and happened to come upon a ceviche truck on the beach. Shontelle immediately decided that Toronto needed something similar and soon Gourmet Bitches was born. The name Gourmet Bitches is not intended to offend and may be a little

12 | the stylish life magazine

too risqué for some people, but Shontelle is redefining the word “bitch”. To her, a bitch is a strong fiery woman who gets things done. She speaks her mind and lives life with a certain confidence, both in her attitude and her food. When people wonder why the name is spelt backwards on the truck, Shontelle explains it softens the look for the younger generation. It seems she has thought of it all! The 18 foot sleek black truck dawns purple LED lights, giving it some attitude, and is fully loaded with a stove top, oven, griddle, grill and deep fryers. Her bitchin menu has a delicious variety of gourmet choices including gluten, dairy, soy, and spelt free options. To name a few: Kale salad with spicy cayenne dressing, dry rubbed Asian Cuban chicken wings with a choice of tequila BBQ sauce, jalapeño aioli or sweet/spicy chilli, Cuban pulled pork taco, Asian tamarind kiwi steak taco and of course the freshest ceviche to remind us how this all started! The city of Toronto is very restrictive on where food trucks can vend, so when Gourmet Bitches can’t be found on the crowded city streets, that usually means that Shontelle is busy catering all types of parties and events. You can even rent the truck out for any occasion. Feel free to check out her site for more information on booking www.gourmetb1tches.com. To find out Gourmet Bitches next stop, follow on twitter @gourmetb1tches or www.torontofoodtrucks.com, an up to date site for all the food truck groupies out there, you will never miss a food truck again! It’s all about being in the right place at the right time, so keep up to date and enjoy a little gourmet healthiness from Shontelle and her Gourmet Bitches team. Attitude has never tasted so good!

BOOKMARK

BOOK REVIEW: ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK BY MELANIE GUIMOND

With her blonde hair, blue eyes, university education and wealthy, waspy background, Manhattanite Piper Kerman is not your typical inmate at Danbury women’s prison. “Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison” is Piper’s real life story about her time at the infamous federal correctional facility in Danbury, Connecticut. Piper has had her life turned upside down after a ten year old drug crime comes back to haunt her. Whether she blames her offense on young love or her free and naïve spirit, she must bear the consequences for whatever choices she made almost a decade earlier. It is easy to relate to Piper’s story. Most of us can look back at some sort of youthful transgression and think “what was I thinking when I (insert risky behavior/ / reckless decision / horrifying relationship here)?” The only difference between our risky and reckless decisions and those committed by Piper is that hers caught up with her. OITNB sheds light on the true reality for women in the prison system. It paints us a picture of the countless number of women in there for misdemeanour drug charges, the power hungry prison guards and perhaps most importantly, how the prison system is

14 | the stylish life magazine

failing to provide any sort of rehabilitation. It seems the only things inmates learn while on “the inside” is how to adapt to the daily rigidity, to not ask questions. It seems that there is no intention to help these women overcome their adversity and prosper after their release. The novel dives into the deeper question of the extremely costly American prison system, which holds 25% of the world’s prisoners while having only 5 % of the world’s population. Let that one sink in. These facts beg the question of what Piper and some of these other women are doing in jail. Clearly something needs to be done to make the system work better. “Orange is the New Black” invites readers into Piper’s day to day struggles. We watch as she develops unlikely friendships and learns valuable lessons not only about herself and who she is, but about life in general. To find out if Martha Stewart, (who was incarcerated at Danbury at the same time as Piper) makes a cameo appearance you’ll have to read the book! If you haven’t heard, Netflix has brought to life a wildly popular series based on Piper’s experience also called “Orange is the New Black”. Though much has been fictionalized for TV audiences, much like the book, it does not fail to entertain!

The Historic Blenheim Palace ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY JEREMY MCCORMACK

Around the globe, there are more than twenty places each called Paris or London. Names of famous towns have often been duplicated over and over again. Woodstock is another that can be commonly found in a variety of places and countries around the world. 22 | the stylish life magazine

travel

THERE WILL ALWAYS BE A LONDON A hundred kilometers from London and only twelve kilometers from the great university town of Oxford, Woodstock is set in a steep valley with a little river. Its winding cobblestone streets still are reminiscent of a time of horse drawn carriages, though the village is now loaded with modern galleries and quaint antique stores. The town is best known as the spot where the young princess Elizabeth I was locked up for almost a year before she was crowned. The site of her imprisonment is now a B&B for visitors to the colossal Blenheim Palace, just a kilometer away. It is widely believed that a giant pile of stones in England might be the inspiration for the fictional Downton Abbey. The actual home depicted in the series, Blenheim, is much larger. It is the only non-royal ‘palace’ in Britain and one of the largest homes in the country. It started as a thank-you gift to the soldier who conquered the French and Germans in a battle near a town in southern Germany called Blindheim in 1704. The Churchill family eventually inherited the home and the title and lived there for the next three hundred years. This home was the birthplace of the great British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and is still the home of the latest Duke of Marlborough. In spite of the large gift shop and very British ‘tea room’ built to greet bus weary travelers, the palace has been designated a Unesco World Heritage site. The style of the building is considered English Baroque, which is one way of saying there is Palladio-line center part with balanced wings on either side. You can expect some curvy bits, all in a slightly less delicate copy of the Italians. Blenheim is a particularly solid version set on a massive piece of land best known for its gardens designed by the famous 18th century landscaper Capability Brown.

HISTORIC BLENHEIM PALACE

Inside there are amazing hand painted ceilings, giant tapestries and gilded picture frames and furniture. With its high ceilings and spacious interior, there are a number of options for serene moments. You may pause, surrounded by silk damask in the green writing room or walk, invigorated by deep crimson walls loaded with massive paintings of charmingly dressed English people gazing benevolently. Outside you may wander along the hedge rows of either of the English or the Italian gardens with pool and fountains, or with your back to the house, sit on a bench enjoying the massive lawn. Canadian director JeanMarc Vallée used the home to look like Buckingham Palace in his film ‘The Young Victoria’. If you want to feel particularly princessy, rooms in the palace may be rented for dinner parties and you can even have your wedding there!

HEAVENLY HOST

There is nothing more enjoyable then entertaining friends and family over the holiday season. Try these tips, trends and out of the box ideas that are creative and wallet friendly. THEME: Looking for a theme for a holiday party? Snowflake, jewel tones, vintage, cottage cozy, winter wonderland or winter plaid will do the trick. MENUS: Typing up a small menu on your computer and printing it on coloured card stock or scrap booking paper is an inexpensive and effective dinner party idea. How about framing your menus in an ornate picture frame that are a perfect take home gift! NAPKINS: No holiday party is complete without customized fabric napkins and homemade napkin rings. Use rope, bracelets, broaches or stringed popcorn to add a cheerful twist to your serviette. For a personal touch, utilize iron on transfers of Christmas trees or Santa’s reindeer’s names. PLACE CARDS: There are so many creative ways over the holiday season to personalize your guest’s seats at the table. Why not try a small stocking on the back of your dining chairs, or a freestanding ornament with their name card. HOLLY JOLLY HOT CHOCOLATE BAR: A fun and festive way to keep your guests and kiddies entertained while they enjoy a sweet treat. This Cocoa bar will warm everyone’s heart and will bring out the kid in everyone. Finalize your set up with chocolate shavings, peppermint candies, caramels and vanilla wafer sticks. TABLE CENTERS: To keep your table merry and bright, be mindful of your center piece heights. Candles, flowers and ornaments should be multiple heights and sizes to create visual interest but never in the site of line of your guests. Here’s a tip: sit in every seat around the table to find the perfect location for your center pieces. HOST WITH THE MOST: Be mindful when your guests arrive. Make sure you take 30 mins to sit with your guests before politely excusing yourself to continue your meal preparation.

THE CO-SLEEPING DILEMMA

THE CO-SLEEPING DILEMMA BY LG DAVIDSON

I have been one of those childless women who, as a third party observer, made assumptions about other people’s parenting choices. There are certainly some things that I have assumed we would teach our offspring and I have imagined some of the ways we would teach them.

28 | the stylish life magazine

THE CO-SLEEPING DILEMMA

Now, as first time parents to be, my husband and I have had to seriously consider our own parenting styles and how we are going to raise this little person into a smart, independent, and compassionate human being. One thing we seem to be on the same page about is the decision not to participate in co-sleeping. This is when babies and children sleep in the same room, and in some cases, in the same bed as one or both parents. In a time when co-sleeping is trendy, and rising in popularity, I risk sounding like a selfish knowit- all, but I assure you we did not take this decision lightly. We heard the reasons that people choose this option; it helps moms keep up with breast feeding late at night, it encourages babies to fall asleep faster by making them feel secure, and gives working parents some extra time with their youngster. But for us, these things seem to come at a high price to pay. THE FAMILY’S QUALITY OF SLEEP IS IN JEOPARDY As a person who goes through insomnia on a regular basis, I am a little more biased and protective of what sleep I can get. Frequent wake ups, little wiggles, horizontal sleepers, tossing and turning, sleep talking, snoring, and, (gasp!) bed wetting are all risks we take when sharing a bed as a family. Our sleep is important to overall health both physically and mentally. Our children need us to be rested and alert to be the best parents that we can be. INTIMACY? There is no way to get around it. It’s hard to be our rowdy, amorous selves with our sweet and unsuspecting babies in the room. It’s obvious that

lifestyle

the romantic relationship and physical intimacy that couples share are the reason our children are here in the first place. It is important to keep up with this relationship and remember to make time to be close to our spouses/partners. It’s these sweet moments that reconnect us after the long nights and challenging days that, put our patience to the test, especially in the first few years of parenthood. SETTING AND FOLLOWING BOUNDARIES AFTER CO-SLEEPING BECOMES A ROUTINE, CAN BE A POTENTIAL PROBLEM LATER When is it enough? How do we draw that line and one day force an infant into their own bed once they are used to sleeping as an entire family unit? Will the infant feel rejected by mom and dad when this happens? These are some big questions that we considered when the idea of co-sleeping was first brought up. While I can see the point that parents want to help a youngster feel secure and get a good night’s rest, I also think that the longer one waits to make the transition to a baby’s own room, the longer it will take him or her to adjust to their new found nocturnal independence. Once a child can be comfortable and independent in their sleeping hours, they will soon be confident enough to build on this independence in other areas of their development. I would never say that families who chose the cosleeping routine are doing it all wrong. If it works for you, who am I to tell anybody any different. What I do know is that, for some possibly selfish, but still very valid reasons, it will not work for us.

DECODING THE FIRST DATE

Decoding The First Date BY MELISSA GROSSER

The process of dating can be a stressful, nerve wrecking, hit or miss situation that the majority of people dread in the beginning. When you meet someone or are set up with “the one”, at least according to your mutual friends, you may approach the first date as a job rather than a fun opportunity to interact with an individual who is fresh and new to your world. Instead of treating a first date like a chore, transform it into a fun activity – a chance to experience something new and feeling good as you do it.

Setting The Date To gauge what your date is like, pick up the phone and have a conversation for a few minutes. Get a feel for the person and start to learn what they like. If the conversation flows, dive right in and set up the in-person date. Skip the typical coffee shop – try to find an interactive activity where you two can talk and experience something fun. Rather than experiencing something that feels like a job interview, this is a better way to determine chemistry and common interests when you are relaxed and having fun.

Pre-Date Prep No matter what the background is on the first date – whether you are excited or not, it is important to put your best foot forward. Once you establish where the date will take place, make sure your wardrobe selection is appropriate for the activity. In terms of the actual look, put forth effort so you appear put together and you are showing off your physical attributes with confidence. Let your best self shine through to your date without overdoing yourself. Aside from your attire, keep your mind open and clear. No pre-date research is necessary. Go into it and learn about your date first hand.

DECODING FIRST DATE

lifestyle

The Date A great piece of advice for one to take when going on a first date- attempt to treat it like the fifth date! Meaning, be relaxed and open. Jump into topics of conversation that can create interest and intrigue between you and your date. Allow yourself to be funny (even if you think you are not) and be amused. If you show up and the chemistry and excitement are not at the forefront of your mind, remain positive and make the best of it! It is not always evident on a first date if you have chemistry or not. Also, if you are not meant to be but you leave a good impression, your date may recommend you to a good friend. The key is to enjoy the first date, even if the person would be better as a friend.

The Romantic or Friendly Aftermath Good or bad, leave the first date remaining calm, cool and collected. Don’t place expectations on it. Let it run its course naturally and give it a few days for you and your date to reconnect. It is not about playing games; it is about reflecting on the date and thinking more about the compatibility and chemistry that you witnessed during that first meeting. If you reconnect and decide to go out again, great! If your date shows interest and you are not too sure, it does not hurt to try again. You never know‌ those butterflies may be around the corner!

CHAD CONNELL

CHAD CONNELL

Handsome Canadian actor Chad Connell has been gaining momentum in the past few years, playing recurring roles in television favourites like “Nikita” and “Degrassi: The Next Generation”, and acting alongside some of Hollywood’s biggest names including Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx in “White House Down” and Lilly Collins in “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones”. Remark was lucky enough to sit down with Chad and pick his brain about acting, life and his new role. YOU RECENTLY STARRED IN THE MOVIE “THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES”. TELL ME ABOUT YOUR ROLE AS THE BLUE HAIRED DEMON. The Blue-haired Demon or Blue-haired

38 | the stylish life magazine

Boy, is the first character introduced in the whole series of the Mortal Instruments books. He flirts with Clary (played by Lilly Collins) who is the main character, and through a series of events, introduces her to the world she never knew existed or knew she was a part of.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT STARRING IN THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS? The movies fan base. The fans have a really high level of passion for the books and I think overall, their reactions to the movie were great. IF LIFE WAS DIFFERENT AND YOU WERE NOT AN ACTOR, WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING?

BY EMILY KLINE PHOTOGRAPHY BY RYAN EMBERLEY

It’s hard for me to imagine doing anything other than acting. If for some reason acting ceased to be a profession and I had to do something else, I suppose I would want to work with food, whiskey or wine. I feel that there is a similar level of creative expression available to me when I’m cooking, or pairing some wine, or picking the perfect whiskey, as acting has. WHY ACTING? WHO OR WHAT WAS YOUR INFLUENCE? I usually meet other people who are lawyers, or bankers, or any job and thought “Why not acting?” I think my parents and my siblings were my greatest influence. They encouraged the arts in our household, whether through visual art, music, or drama. As a result, both my siblings and their spouses are in the arts.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR YOUNG PROFESSIONALS OR BUDDING ACTORS? Seek out people who encourage you and inspire you. You won’t always be fully aware of your successes day-to-day, so it is important that you surround yourself with people who are passionate and driven to succeed to keep you motivated. Success breeds success. WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE ACTRESS & ACTOR? One of my favourite actresses would be Mia Wasikowka, best known for her role as Alice in “Alice in Wonderland” and Ben Foster, known for his role in “3:10 To Yuma” WHAT ARE YOUR TOP 3 FAVOURITE MOVIES? In no particular order: “East of Eden”, “Dancer in the Dark” and “The Shining” WHAT BOOK IS ON YOUR NIGHTSTAND AT THE MOMENT? I’m currently reading ‘No Great Mischief’ by Alistair MacLeod. My father’s been recommending it to me for a while. YOU STILL LIVE IN CANADA, WHICH WE ARE SUPER HAPPY ABOUT. BUT WHY HAVE YOU NOT MADE THE BIG MOVE TO HOLLYWOOD YET? I have spent a lot of time down in LA and New York and I think they’re great places for an actor to be. My future will hold a lot more time down there I’m sure. But no matter where I reside, I will always live in Canada. WHAT IS ON THE HORIZON FOR YOUR CAREER? At the time of this interview, I’ll have a couple projects airing. I’ll be guest-starring in the season premiere of the Canadian series “The Murdoch Mysteries” and soon, I’ll have a spot coming up on the CW’s Beauty and the Beast. By the time this goes out we’ll see what else I’ve got lined up! FINALLY, MAKE YOUR REMARK! Our ancestors crossed oceans and fought wars so we could have better lives. Show them some respect and quit acting like an idiot!

FINANCIAL INVESTMENT

HOW TO OVERCOME FINANCIAL INVESTMENT INTIMIDATION BY MITCH PARKER OF MP PRIVATE CAPITAL

For some reason, words like finance and investments have people changing the subject and moving awkwardly in their chairs. It could be the fact that it isn’t taught in school or that money is a topic many shy away from discussing. Some people aren’t comfortable because figuring out the difference between terms like annual return and compound interest sends them into a panic. Whatever your reason is, there are many benefits to taking a little time to understand the benefits of something that will ultimately decide whether you have enough to retire comfortably or if the golden years of life will only be a distant dream you once had. INVESTMENTS 101: There’s no need to be a math genius to be a good investor. You simply need to do some research and speak to a few professionals to get your foundation. Knowing basic terms, what the different options out there are and the pros / cons of each are a great start. You’ll quickly gain confidence and start to realize which may be better suited for your personality type and risk tolerance. PLANNING: If you don’t have any sort of end point or goal, it’s hard to keep focused on the big picture. It’s also really easy to get overwhelmed and distracted. Having a financial plan written down on paper that you can reference a few times a year will do two things. First, every time you review, you’ll see how far you’ve come and therefore keep motivated. Secondly, you’ll be able to alter and change the plan as needed. Your plan should include monthly, annual and five year financial goals. Since so much can change over a short period of time, having smaller time intervals can allow you adapt and adjust as needed. EMERGENCY PREPARATION: Living paycheque to paycheque is an unfortunate reality for many Canadians. The big problem with this is that when a large expense comes along, such as a car breaking down or the roof starting to leak in the middle of a rainstorm, the funds aren’t there. Having an investment plan and setting some money aside for later, no matter how small the amount, can play a crucial role when one of these unforeseen circumstances arise. Avoid dipping into these savings if you can, as they are designed to be for later in life, but it’s still better to have some sort of last resort then have nothing at all. START YOUNG: Being a young investor gives you the advantage of time. You have the ability to try different investment opportunities to make your money work for you. Some investors prefer technology, some real estate and some a mix of everything in between. Finding the right investment is something that can take time, and might change as your investment plan moves into different phases. By giving yourself the time, you are able to properly educate

42 | the stylish life magazine

yourself and avoid rushed decisions which could potentially put your money at risk. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE The best way to develop smart habits when it comes to finance and investments is practice. The longer you’ve been doing it, chances are your skills, diligence and consistencies are better off for it. Money management is just like anything else you learn, and it takes time to become an expert. Fortunately, there is a lot of help on the internet and through people such as financial planners to make the learning curve shorter. Don’t be afraid to ask a lot of questions; your goal should be to understand what your money is going into and whether it’s a good fit for you. By taking a little bit of time to learn the basics of investing, you’ll be doing yourself a favour which can literally pay off for the rest of your life. Until you 100% understand what your money is going into, don’t be afraid to ask a lot of questions. No person cares more about your money than you do, which is why it’s so important to perform your due diligence. You’ll thank yourself when you are financially able to enjoy the “golden years” of life.

Math has never looked so good. Our All-In-One Moisturizer features 16 botanical extracts, 8 minerals and enzymes, and over 20 antioxidants from around the world. It’s not only a day, night and eye cream, but also a serum and makeup primer. It’s easy to apply, quick to absorb, and impossible to give up...because the longer you use it, the less you’ll need it. WARMING UP YOUR SPACE WITH WINDOW COVERINGS

FIVE IDEAS FOR WARMING UP YOUR SPACE WITH WINDOW COVERINGS

With the holidays around the corner, many of us are looking to beautify our homes. To pull together a polished look, you will need to start planning now as custom window coverings can take between two to four weeks to be made and installed. Here are a few ideas to help warm up your space with window coverings: LAYER WINDOW TREATMENTS FOR A LUXURIOUS LOOK AND TO CREATE WARMTH: Our favourite look is seeing roman shades layered with drapery on top to give the room depth and interest. The drapery heightens your room by bringing your eye upwards and it is a great way to anchor any space. You can have decorative panels that are stationary on the sides purely for looks and to bring in colour or texture into the room. Roman shades in a window frame provides the functionality of privacy and light control in a tone-on-tone coordinating grey. Having layered window coverings also will help you with energy efficiency. If you have drafty windows, this is certainly going to make your space warmer as well.

DO NOT BE AFRAID OF USING A PATTERN: Using window coverings with a pattern allows the look to be retractable. You can have a dramatic look when they are down, or minimize the pattern when you have the window coverings up. It creates a unique personality you just can not get with a “play it safe scheme of solids. USE DARK COLOURS: Darker colours will help to create an inviting feel and draw people into a space. It also makes a larger space feel cozy. If you have neutral coloured furniture, having dark window coverings as a backdrop will really allow your sofa to stand out in the room. CHOOSE ENERGY EFFICIENT SHADES: Did you know that cellular honeycomb shades have the highest insulation factor for window coverings? The pockets in cellular honeycomb blinds trap the cold and diffuse it before it even enters your house. This will keep the chill out where it belongs. These shades come in light filtering or blackout options. You can also choose to do a top-down or bottom-up application to get privacy, while still enjoying natural light.

ADD TEXTURE AND BRING NATURE INDOORS: Using woven wood blinds that are made of grass, bamboo and reeds, allow texture and warmth to enter your space. You can use a privacy liner that still allows light to filter through or a blackout liner if it is for the bedroom. To give these blinds a modern feel, you can pair them with a sleeker drapery style. the stylish life magazine |

LADY PORN

LADY PORN REBORN BY LAUREN “PANTS” PANTOLIANO

58 | the stylish life magazine

LADY PORN

The roles of Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey in the upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey film have been cast and the fan world’s response has been beyond opinionated. Currently there exists an online petition to recast these roles (the number of signatures is over 75,000). Casting appropriateness aside, this petition shows that fans of this relatively new erotic novel are not only very passionate about this series, but also that they are not afraid to admit they loved reading a book that is classified as erotic literature. From my perspective, this has represented a major resurgence in the interest of women in the erotica genre of novels. Growing up, I can remember my mom and aunts burying their noses in Harlequin Romances and other so-called “bodice rippers”. Once in a while, when no one was looking, I would leaf through to the sexy parts and power-read them, all while clenching my pelvic floor muscles as though my vagina might blurt out to everyone that I was reading smut. Back then I didn’t know they were called kegels, but now I’m grateful for my vagina’s self-preservation! These novels were my first introductions to erotica, but in all fairness they are not actually all that erotic. Despite featuring sex scenes, they used terms that were not natural or realistic. Throbbing member anyone? How about moist center? Silky shaft? Read out of context these could refer to dance club participants, fresh baked goods or architectural features respectively. Not exactly representative of real sex. I’m sure some of these terms have gone by the wayside since I was I was eleven or twelve years old, but with new lady porn out there for me to enjoy, I haven’t taken the time to crack the spine on any recently published bodice - rippers. More recently, books like the Fifty Shades of Grey and Crossfire trilogies have given women (including a new generation of ladies who are not afraid to admit they like being turned on

health

by books) something to read. These novels use the proper terms for sexual organs (hooray for penis!), and also delve into a much deeper mix of sexual proclivities: domination, extreme fantasies, multiple partners, and role-playing to name a few. With such a great selection of reading material to “enjoy” in the bath, women are being granted an opportunity to take in a type of porn that isn’t filled with bad lighting, fake orgasms and bad haircuts. No offense to the adult film industry, but I prefer my porn in a portable, silent version. There’s nothing like reading an erotic novel in a public place; bonus points if the book jacket has a sexy pic! If you’re looking for a great erotic novel to check out, try L. Marie Adeline’s S.E.C.R.E.T. or Emmanuelle by Emmanuelle Arsan. Both books focus greatly on women’s pleasure and men take a back seat to their sexual journeys. If you dig a little girl-on-girl action, Emmanuelle will not disappoint. If you prefer your porn in video/photo version, but find the stuff featured most prominently online or in-store to be a little too male-centric, I suggest doing some research for the specific things you’re into. You can also try one of these sites: fucklikeawoman.tumblr. com, joymii.com, or porn4ladies.tumblr. com. If you’re looking to rent or buy videos, check out films directed by Erika Lust. She creates porn that is artistic, builds tension and excitement and doesn’t feature a soundtrack of bow-chickawows and over exaggerated moans. It’s tasteful while still being sexy as hell. Whether you’re looking for something to spice up your sex life with your partner or to turn yourself on when you’re solo, today’s porn and erotica options appear to be endless. So dive in, and turn on. Until next time, keep it safe, keep it sexy; and when all else fails, keep it as a great story. — xox Pants the stylish life magazine |

DEALING WITH ANXIETY

DEALING WITH ANXIETY BY JENNA MATTHEWS

We all know what it feels like to be anxious; fast heart rate, sweaty palms, fear of one thing or another. Some of us feel this once in a while when times are tough, while others deal with anxiety on a daily basis. There has been countless research about anxiety disorders. It seems that more people are open to talk about experiencing symptoms, whether or not they have been diagnosed. Four years ago, I was diagnosed with a panic disorder, one of many types of anxiety disorders. At first, it was very embarrassing. I felt like no one could understand. I often heard “it’s all in your head” or “you’re acting crazy”. Finally, when I ended up in the hospital because I had blurred vision, dizziness, inexplicable fear and difficulty breathing, I realized that it was not just “all in my head”. I went through different types of treatment, from the pharmaceuticals given to me by the hospital, the prescriptions that I refused to take for fear of becoming numb, to seeing a therapist once a week. After doing countless hours of reading, I found the below methods helped me through my anxiety in a healthy way. BOOST CALMING HORMONES Dopamine and serotonin deficiencies are the leading cause of anxiety. By eating the right foods we can allow our bodies to release these hormones in a much more natural and effective way. Eating foods

64 | the stylish life magazine

with the right balance ofomega-3’s like salmon or flax-seed, B vitamins like eggs and meats, antioxidants like berries and beans, calcium like dark leafy greens and almonds, and magnesium like bananas and dark chocolate, will all contribute to a healthy hormone balance. AVOID STIMULANTS Caffeine, sugar and alcohol are commonly used as quick fixes for that burnt out feeling. However, the crash afterwards can trigger a lot of symptoms of anxiety, including irritability, fatigue and anxiousness. Many of us get stuck in a stimulant rut throughout a busy week; coffee in the morning, sugar in the afternoon and alcohol at night. As great as we may feel during the stimulant high, the crash we experience after has a negative impact on our body’s natural ability to regulate certain hormones. GET OUTSIDE Whether you’re engaging in a strenuous hike or simply sipping tea on the patio with a good book, the vitamin D our bodies produce from natural light exposure very much aids in lifting our moods. Vitamin D helps to activate our body’s production of serotonin and dopamine. TAKE CARE OF YOUR BODY Getting the right amount of exercise, whether it’s hitting the gym for a good workout or just taking Fido for a walk, can help calm the mind and regulate your body. Yoga seems to be the best form of exercise for anxiety, as it gets your blood flowing, and makes you focus on your

breathing patterns, another helpful tool for reducing symptoms of anxiety. Also try monitoring your sleep patterns and make sure you get a full eight hours of sleep every night. Sleep deprivation can lead to imbalances in the body, and can limit the body’s absorption of certain nutrients necessary to control feelings of anxiety. FEEL THE LOVE A long hug, kissing and sex all release the neurotransmitter oxytocin, which is nature’s antidepressant and anti-anxiety hormone. The calming and peaceful effects of these types of personal touching can do wonders while experiencing an anxiety attack, and can sometimes relieve you of all symptoms. FIND YOUR BALANCE Find a way to balance work and life. Take the time to try different schedules and find what works best for you. Just because the experts say to avoid alcohol doesn’t mean that one calming glass of wine will send you over the edge. Try different things and find the right balance that works for you. Accepting that anxiety may be a part of your life, no matter how big or small is the first step to being able to control it. There are many triggers out there that can cause attacks. If we can recognise triggers early on and teach ourselves how to deal with them before they become unbearable, living with anxiety does not have to be embarrassing or life altering. The views and opinions expressed in this article are those of the author. If you are suffering from an anxiety disorder please seek advice from a doctor or another professional.

STAY YOUNG AND BEAUTIFUL

TO STAY YOUNG AND BEAUTIFUL BY MARIO RIGBY

Let’s face it. It’s hard to find motivation to get up early, prep

young and soft. Vitamin E helps shield your skin from UV

sunlight and holds in moisture, helping your skin stay hydrated.

idea of purchasing health products sounds much more appealing than putting in your own hard work and effort. As with most health benefits, it comes down to a lifestyle change rather than how much you can afford to spend on products. The things you can do to beautify your skin are extraordinarily similar to what you can do to strengthen your muscles and heart, manage your weight, lift your mood and live longer and healthier. Get regular exercise, sleep enough and eat well. These are the core principles to having good foundational beauty.

Whole grains contain B-vitamin biotin, which assist cells in processing fats. Lack of biotin can cause scaly or dry skin. Consuming wheat germs or grains result in moisturized and clear skin.

Water is a crucial component of maintaining skin elasticity A healthy body means healthy skin. If you feed your body good, healthy foods, exercise and keep your stress low, your skin will

is easily the skin, this is where I will gear my focus on how a healthy lifestyle can be beneficial. Your skin requires circulation in order to remain healthy and vibrant. By increasing blood flow, the oxygen in your blood helps nourish skin cells and keep them vital. Contrary to some beliefs, exercise does not actually detoxify the skin. Regular exercise helps tone muscles which has no direct effect on skin. However, exercise has been shown to ease stress and the conditions that can improve when stress is reduced include acne and eczema.

FOODS THAT HELP BEAUTIFY YOUR MIND AND BODY ARE: Seafood such as salmon, mussels and oysters are foods rich in both omega-3 fatty acids and zinc. The omega-3 fats reduce dryness and inflammation in skin. Another benefit is skin that is smooth, clear and glowing. Fruits are high in vitamin C, a prime ingredient in numerous skin care creams. This vitamin aids in the body’s production of collagen, a protein that forms the basic structure of your skin. Further benefits are smooth, tight skin. Vegetables are high in vitamin A and beta-carotene, the active ingredients for bright and smooth skin. Our bodies convert betacarotene into vitamin A, which acts as an antioxidant, preventing cell damage. Nuts are primarily composed of vitamin E. It helps keep skin the stylish life magazine |

BRUNO GUNN I INTERVIEWED BY NATALIE DEANE

THE HUNGER GAMES:

CATCHING FIRE STAR SITS DOWN WITH US AND HAS US ALL FIRED UP TO SEE HIM ON THE BIG SCREEN

leisure He is strong, he is sexy and he is “Catching Fire” in the latest Hunger Games movie. Meet Bruno Gunn! You might recognize him from True Blood, Sons of Anarchy or CSI, but in the much anticipated second installment of the Hunger Games trilogy, he is unforgettable as Brutus, the fierce warrior victor from District 2 who is back to fight again in the battle of the all-stars. While surrounded by an incredible cast that includes Jennifer Lawrence, Stanley Tucci, Woody Harrelson and Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Gunn was inspired to bring his best to set every day, saying “It was such a great group. They were professional, spontaneous and allowed you to express yourself freely as an actor.” The character of Brutus was raised in one of the richest districts in Panem. A vicious warrior groomed for the arena, he volunteers to return to the deadly games as a tribute. “He has lived a privileged lifestyle. He has had the best of everything” says Gunn. “I imagined him as a fierce fighter with a chip on his shoulder, waiting for his next battle.” An athlete all his life, Bruno felt that he could really relate to Brutus’ character: “When I first read the role I thought this feels like me, I can identify with his competitive nature.” Since Brutus was one of the fiercest victors the Hunger Games had ever seen, Gunn had to look the part. Though he already had a fit physique, Bruno took things to another level with his trainer, Drew Logan. “Our plan was to be bigger, stronger and more intimidating than ever before,” said Bruno. After two months of intensive three to four hour daily workouts, which involved doing up to 500 sit ups, Gunn was ready to tackle the role of a vicious warrior. Brutus would now be a big bruising force with massive muscle and a solid six-pack! Of course, we all want to know, what this hot hunky star finds attractive in a woman, so we asked him! “Smart is sexy,” states Bruno. “There is nothing sexier to me than a smart, creative woman.” And once he finds his perfect woman where would he take her on a date? “I’m an art enthusiast; I love to go to galleries. It gives you a chance to have small talk,” says Gunn. “You walk and talk and share ideas. It’s much better than just having a meal and staring at each other.” With all of this new attention, we wanted to know how Bruno Gunn’s life has changed. His earnest answer was “It’s such a blessing to have this opportunity and now there are others that are coming my way. I’m just thankful, and stay focused on today.” To learn more about Bruno Gunn you can follow him on twitter at @BrunoGunn or check out his profile on imdb.com. CAULIFLOWER

IS THE NEW BLACK

BY CAIT MIZZI

Like fashion, art and just about everything else, food has a trend cycle. In recent years, it has been all about the fair food phenomenon: deep fried donut casseroles sprinkled with maple bacon brownie bites, accompanied by a side of double deep fried pickle flavored butter balls. At the same time, we have the beet juicing, kale eating, health junkies expressing why it’s better to eat clean rather than ferociously racing each other to the diabetic finish line. There are all of these internal food trends that I am always so fascinated by within the world of the gluten intolerant, wheat grass shooting, plant powered, salad lovers. Most of which make perfect sense as new superfoods are discovered. Healthy food chefs grasp at any flavors and textures they can use to create scrumptious and nutrient-packed variations of the junk that so many of us have chosen to eliminate. Through the years we have seen protein-packed quinoa rise to stardom. Antioxidant-rich, cancer-fighting berries like acai and goji became household names. Now, I am so very pleased to announce: that cauliflower is the new kale (or the new black). The same cruciferous vegetable that we buried with shredded cheese and nuked in the microwave throughout the 90s. The one whose stink looms in your home for days after you have steamed a batch, causing any visitors to immediately assume you passed gas right before they crossed the threshold. the stylish life magazine |

food It seems we have discovered that you can do some pretty amazing things with cauliflower. Dozens of textures can be created by using it raw, as well as steaming, baking or pureeing it. I have made “chicken wings out of cauliflower for crying out loud, and you know what? They might have been better than the real deal! It has this tofu type quality about it that enables it to take on the taste of much of what it is cooked with while still offering up a mild flavor of its own that can be really lovely in a lot of different dishes. Not only is this popular vegetable making a resurgence because it is delicious, it is also loaded with important nutrients. Cauliflower contains a wide range of B vitamins, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin K, proteins, phosphorus, potassium and a great deal of vitamin C and manganese. This makes it a strong contender in the antioxidant arena, not only because of the vitamin C and manganese, but also because it contains many different carotenoids. Several recent studies have revealed that it has the ability to eliminate cancer enzymes. This flowery vegetable also possesses an incredible anti-inflammatory quality which makes it highly beneficial to anyone who might suffer from arthritis, diabetes and other inflammatory issues. While cauliflower remains in the limelight, there is no shortage of recipes available out there for you to discover. You can find ways to make it into pizza crusts, soups, sauces and popcorn. I can promise that you will find these creative new dishes to be a culinary success at the dinner table. Just don’t forget to crack a window.
