f you know anything about Rome you know that it is a city known for its great history, art, culture, and of

course wine. The G-Rough hotel is founded to provide you with an experience at the intersection of these elements. From the moment guests step into the hotel their experience begins. Entering into a kaleidoscopic wine gallery, with vintage mirrors and furniture pieces, accented by the hotel’s red and white tiles, it is truly a wondrous first impression. Stepping away from tradition, G-Rough does not have a reception area for guests when they enter through the hotel doors. Check-in takes place in the gallery, filled with work by up-and-coming local artists.

Was it Something I Said? BY CASEY MCKAY | WWW.CASEYMCKAY.COM

I think it’s true when they say opposites attract. I know it’s cliché to say, but I do feel like in a lot of ways my husband is truly my other half. I am very much a glass half full sort of person, optimistic, trying to see the good in every situation. He jumps to the worst conclusions and has a bit of a pessimistic outlook (he also argues that he is a realist not a pessimist, does that make me a dreamist?). This is probably the same for a lot of people. It’s a good balance, you really can’t have two people who both have their head in the clouds or both think the world is out to get them. I just don’t know that it would work. We also have a lot of similar interests, as our relationship started as a friendship in high school, but personality-wise we couldn’t be more different.

So when we started delving into the kinkier side of our sex life it seemed a little odd that I kept making him promise me that he wouldn’t tell anyone. Typical morning after a night of illicit sex acts. Me: Seriously, don’t ever tell anyone. I would die. Hubby: Um, I’m pretty sure no one would believe me anyway. Plus how much of a jerk am I when all the guys are complaining about not getting any and I’m like ‘Hey! Guess what we were doing?’ Me: I guess you’re right, but just promise me? Hubby: I promise. This conversation repeated itself many times over. Then I got invited to a bachelorette party last summer. Personally, I hate these types of nights. I was never one to go to clubs or drink a lot in bars (I mean, I drink a lot, just not at bars where it gets expensive). But I felt obligated to go, it was for one of my friends who was one of the last to get married and I didn’t want her to feel like she was any less special than all the other brides I celebrated with. Ten of us got a few hotel rooms and a VIP section in a club. The night is pretty much a blur, I am still not sure if this is due to the alcohol or the overall exhaustion I was experiencing from a long, stressful week coupled with being awake way past my normal bedtime. There was lots of drinking, and dancing. I remember getting yelled at a few times for dancing on a table (it was a low table, like coffee table height, hardly something to be reprimanded for). Anyway, our night ends around 4am with five of us at an allnight pizza place. We were quite the hot mess. The bride was sober and miserable. Her cousin was drunk and sobbing. My one

For instance, my husband is a pretty private person. Even with

She finally manages to get out “It’s so awful!” between gasps for air. Now I am embarrassed and defensive. I follow up with “Have you tried it?” “Yes! And never again!” Now I am peppering her with questions (which she is not answering, obviously not an over-sharer like myself). And I start giving suggestions on “proper preparations.” (I still have not heard the last of that line, it gets brought up at many parties.) The bride seemed disgusted and annoyed with me (she quite frequently talks about how she hates having sex, so I am not surprised by her reaction), but I piqued her cousin’s interest enough to get her to stop crying. Our night came to a close soon after this, we trudged back to our rooms and I woke up in the morning slightly hungover and even more embarrassed. I shoot a quick text off to my husband: Had a great time last night... may have told everyone I like anal. I hold my breath for his reply. If the tables were turned I would be totally pissed. Really?? Okay, I cannot judge tone of voice in a text, is he mad? Um, yeah, I feel like an idiot. Almost immediate reply— LOL. So when I get a few pats on the back this weekend from the guys I’ll know why? My relief is paramount, at least my husband isn’t mad.

about 2 to 3 minutes. Pour in the white wine and stir until most of it is absorbed.

• 1/2 cup grated Parmesan

Begin adding the simmering stock, about half a cup at a time, stirring often and waiting until most of the liquid has been absorbed before adding more. It should take 3 to 4 minutes for the rice to soak up the liquid between additions. If it’s taking a lot less time than that, reduce the heat. If it’s taking more, turn up the heat. When there is only about a cup or so of stock to go into the risotto, prepare the scallops. Set a heavy-bottomed pan over medium-high heat and add the remaining oil. Pat the scallops dry on both sides and season all over with salt and pepper. When the pan is hot and the oil is shimmering, add the scallops in batches, taking care not to crowd them. Sear until they have a nice golden crust, and then turn them over to sauté the other side. The scallops should still be slightly translucent in the centre. Remove to a plate as the risotto finishes cooking. Just after the last bit of stock has been added to the risotto, stir in the Parmesan, then the grapefruit segments and juice, mixing gently. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Divide the risotto among 4 plates. Place 3 scallops atop the risotto on the individual plates and serve.

Hayley is already an experienced actor, singer, and songwriter. She currently

plays Erica Goldberg on the ABC hit, The Goldbergs. We had a chance to ask Hayley some questions and pick her brain about her aspirations, her dream role, and what the future holds.

YOU CURRENTLY PLAY ERICA GOLDBERG, WHO IS A LITTLE REBELLIOUS. WERE YOU A REBEL IN HIGH SCHOOL? WAS THIS CHARACTER ROLE HARD FOR YOU TO GET INTO? I tried really hard to be a rebel in high school but it never really worked. I wanted to be “scene” or a skater girl and I could never really pull it off. This character wasn’t too difficult for me to get into because I always play the sassy older sister. I don’t know what it is, but it’s easy for me.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO GET INTO ACTING?

I started acting originally because of music. I wanted to be

a singer and record labels said the only way they could sign me at the time was to have a platform, such as a TV show. Eventually I grew to love acting as much as music and I couldn’t be happier working on such a funny show!

HOW IS YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR FAMILY? ARE YOU CLOSE WITH THEM? HAS THE JOB INTERFERED WITH YOUR QUALITY TIME WITH THEM AT ALL? I am an only child and we are SUPER close. I moved to Los Angeles since starting the show and my family still lives in Texas so it has been hard, but I do my best to come back home and visit them when I can.

YOU BEGAN SINGING AND SONGWRITING AT THE AGE OF 13, WOULD YOU SAY THAT’S YOUR TRUE PASSION? Yes. Absolutely. It’s what I’ve always wanted to do and everything I do is to work towards that goal of being a singer/songwriter/musician.

THERE IS A YOUTUBE VIDEO OF YOU SINGING CUPS FROM THE MOVIE PITCH PERFECT, HAVE YOU SEEN THE 2ND MOVIE YET? IF SO WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON IT? I have seen it and to be honest, I’m a little disappointed in way they wrote out certain characteristics of different people in the movie that were in the second one. However, the music was AMAZING and I loved getting to see my friends in the Pentatonix perform!

WHO DO YOU LOOK UP TO IN THE SINGING AND SONGWRITING INDUSTRY? I’ve always loved Sara Barielles for her songwriting and singing ability. Her music moves me more than most artists. Sometime you just click with a songwriter’s words and that’s how her music is for me.

WHAT IS YOUR ALL-TIME FAVOURITE MUSICAL? Wicked! It blew me away!! I loved when Idina Menzel was in it, too.

WHAT IS YOUR DREAM ROLE? I would love to play a fun character in a comedy movie much like Amy Poehler, Tina Fey or Sandra Bullock. Comedies are my favorite.

DID YOU EVER HAVE A “HOLY CRAP I’M FAMOUS!” MOMENT? IF SO WHAT WAS IT? There are moments I’m on set when I look around and ask myself how I got here, and I still haven’t gotten used to the idea that I work on a show or the fact that I can walk down the street and have

much every Netflix original series, but Unbreakable Kimmy Schmit has me super excited right now!

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE? Continue to act and sing as long as the industry will have me. Making music I think will always be a part of my life. I’m just taking it one day at a time and enjoying each moment.

your closet, and design accordingly, with ergonomics in mind.

WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER WHEN RENOVATING A CLOSET?

WHAT INSPIRES WHEN CREATING A DESIGN?

There are many important things to remember when renovating a closet, so it’s hard to pick just one. This is your opportunity to start from scratch with your closet—fix everything you don’t like currently, so making it functional is key. In doing so, make sure to take stock of everything you have in the closet.

Organization is important in a closet because it is often the start of one’s day. It sets the tone of the day (empowered, saves time, less stress) when you are in a clutter-free, organized space.

FASHION

WHY IS ORGANIZATION SO IMPORTANT IN A CLOSET?

When I design a closet for my clients, I ‘make sure everything has its place’ to make organization for them that much easier. When you open a jewelry drawer or scan for which purse to wear that day, you should see everything at first glance to make deciding what to wear easy and fun!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT DESIGNING A CLOSET? I enjoy sourcing material and finish options, and accessories for the closet. There are so many options and it’s fun to present clients with options they themselves didn’t know were possible, from navy ostrich leather drawer fabrics to rose gold mirrors and champagne silver wood cabinetry. The before and after transformation is also pretty amazing to see!

IF SOMEONE DOES NOT HAVE ROOM FOR A HUGE WALK IN CLOSET, WHAT CAN THEY DO TO MAXIM IZE THEIR SPACE? If you don’t have a huge walk-in-closet, you can still maximize space by utilizing the full depth and height of the space you do have. For instance, for depth, you can incorporate pull-out shelves, and for height, take the cabinetry to the ceiling and incorporate design elements such as pull-down hanging rods. Also, make sure you are utilizing the corners in your closet, which do not have to be awkward, but additional usable space.

DO MEN AND WOMEN REALLY FIGHT AB OUT SPACE IN A CLOSET? Yes, it’s a shared space so this definitely happens. In shared spaces, it is important to have a separation of space, so boundaries are set and agreed upon. To see more of Lisa’s work go to www.laclosetdesign.com

BEAUTY

When it comes to summer makeup, we all know that a bronzed glow is the way to go. However, what happens if we get bored of that monochromatic look? Here are five simple ways to incorporate a fun pop of colour into your summer beauty routine: 1) After applying your much-needed and beloved bronzer, find a bright shade of pink or peach blush and gently apply it to the apples of your cheeks. Choose a shade with a bit of luminosity to it, especially if your bronzer is matte. This will give you a gorgeous “lit-from-within” glow. 2) Line your eyes or your bottom waterline with a colour that compliments the tones in your eyes. If you have blue or green eyes, try a plum or purple shade or feel free to even lighten it up and use a lavender color. For brown or hazel eyes, opt for a vibrant green or royal blue. If you use these colors subtly, it will still remain classy looking, yet fun! 3) Choose a luminous highlighter that has a small amount of a fresh colour in it. Most highlighters are a champagne colour, however there are many more on the market now that have pink undertones (great for fair to light/medium skin) and ones that have a rich gold or copper shade (best for medium tanned to dark skin). Apply the highlighter on the tops of the cheekbones, the bridge of the nose, the Cupid’s bow and on the temples for a fresh, dewy look. 4) Add a pop of colour to the inner corners of the eyes. For this practice, a pearlized pink, gold or light lilac shade is recommended. By putting it right in the tear duct area of the eye, it will make your eyes look wider and more awake. 5) Be fearless with your lip colour. Summer is the time to be wild, free and bold with your pout. Opt for bright pinks, vibrant peaches, magentas and fun purples. You don’t have to be modest all the time. If you keep your face makeup fairly neutral, you have some room to have fun. With these above tips, you will successfully shake up your summer beauty routine. Be prepare to see some heads turn!
