Our team focused on bold hues, bright fabrics and electric patterns along with powerful and insightful articles to spark your interest. These sharp additions to our content truly represent what summer is all about!

This issue showcases a large variety of the talent that is out there today. From the variety of photo shoots and an assortment of article topics, there’s surely something for everyone to enjoy. In need of paradise to relieve yourself from the stresses of life? Looking for something different?

Surfing in Bali might sound like a perfect option.

Check into the small surfing town of Canggu in Bali, Indonesia where there is a perfect mix of unlimited surf, beautiful culture, incredible food and unbeatable atmosphere.

brighter, sweet smells are stronger, people are friendlier and the general atmosphere is more kind and gentle. The locals embrace travellers in a way unlike anywhere in the world. They welcome new friends into their circle of trust without a second thought. Children trust in the most pure way, and are intrigued by the differences of travellers.

Being in the ocean and sitting on a small floating piece of fibreglass, waiting for that one wave that you connect with on a deeper level is such a different way of life. When you do get that wave, it’s like time slows down, colours become more vivid, you are connected with the board, the water, the sky, and everything just falls into place. It’s an addiction in a sense. A feeling that you’ll yearn for and will stay in the water for hours, just to feel it again.

Volunteering gives you the ability to help, while also benefiting from it yourself.

It helps open your eyes to a world that most people don’t want to think about or recognize, while allowing you to spread awareness. In turn, people help people, to help people understand.

Danielle a 21 year old female, studying to obtain a bachelor of science in nursing at the University of Western Ontario made a choice that would change her outlook on life forever. Instead of taking the summer off from her studies, she decided to make a journey to Takoradi, Ghana, to experience what nursing was like in a different country far away from western medicine.

Danielle traveled to Ghana with the organization Work the World, where they specialize in healthcare overseas. The organization places doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and other medical professionals in hospitals all over the globe.

Work the World let Danielle receive hands on experience, something she will never forget.

Remark: Would you ever go back and relive the experience?

In a heartbeat. Africa is something you could never understand until you have experienced it.

Remark: What was one of the most depressing things you saw while there? Due to the lack of supplies, many medical procedures were painful for children, which was very hard

to experience. Working in the neonatal ward was one of the most amazing things I got to experience but also the saddest. Delivering premature babies and seeing them suffer from conditions that could be easily fixed in other countries, was hard to deal with.

Remark: You’re most memorable experience?

For one week I worked in the labour and delivery ward in the hospital. I saw two births, one live and one caesarean section. I had never received the opportunity to experience this in Canada and it was the most beautiful and outstanding experience I received while volunteering abroad. Along with that experience, I also travelled throughout Ghana experiencing many amazing things and learning about the locals. During one of my last weeks abroad, I lived with a host family where I worked in the local clinic. The two room clinic had no doctors, and only four nurses. These nurses were saviours to the village and something I aspire to be later in life.

Remark: What is your next step?

To finish my nursing degree and gain field experience. I also want to continue traveling around the world and work as a nurse by helping and caring for the less fortunate.

Danielle is a young, powerful woman looking to help change the world for the better. Her story encourages us to be better, and to volunteer where needed. We can help make a difference one story at a time.

Reading Ross’ book is like hanging out with your best friend.

Your very flamboyant, gay, outspoken, sassy, unique one of a kind guy who also happens to be in the know of all things Hollywood. It is impossible to read this comedic memoir without laughing out loud at his hilarious tales.

Ross entertains readers with cheerful enthusiasm in telling his life stories. From anecdotes about growing up in a farm town, to scraping scum off the insides of McDonald’s bins and ultimately ending up on Jay Leno, Chelsea Lately and don’t forget being BFF’s with Gwenyth Paltrow. This man has followed his dreams and then some.

If there is one thing to take from this book, Ross helps readers find out how they too can develop their own sense of self confidence. His message is simple- Be unique, embrace every inner fiber of who you are and revel in what you will become.

Ross took the time out of his busy schedule to sit down with Remark and answer a few of our questions.

Remark: Your thoughts on Canada and Poutine?

I love Canada. I grew up right under the Canadian border, so I always watched Canadian TV. I’ve never tried Poutine, though.

I’d rather spend my calories on Pinot Grigio.

Remark: Will you be attending Toronto Pride this year?

Have you ever been?

I’d love to someday!

Remark: Do you have any advice for aspiring authors or anyone wanting to start out in the entertainment industry?

Work hard and get yourself to New York or LA. Then stand out, perfect your craft, and never settle.

Remark: Do you have any tips for readers on how we can develop our own delusional and highly grand sense of self confidence?

Just love yourself. I struggle daily with trying to be the best version of myself, but at the end of the day I make sure to love myself no matter how many failures or successes I have.

Remark: We want more of you. Will you be writing any more books in the future?

My talk show starts in the fall on the E! Network and, absolutely, I’ll write another book someday soon.

Remark: Lastly we see you have a reoccurring role on Days of Our Lives.

D’Angelo likes to take his time, and apparently his fans don’t mind waiting.

His epic returns always seem to be worth the wait, and a Friday night at the Sound Academy in Toronto was no exception.

Two hours after the doors opened and the crowd was well primed with R&B classics, the band took to the stage to play an almost six minute intro. The man of the hour sauntered on stage sporting a mountain man hat (perhaps a shout out to his deep southern roots) and a hot pink guitar. Opening with “Left to Right”, it was clear that D’Angelo and his boys came to party. By the second song, the epic hit “Brown Sugar”, the crowd was fully committed with hands waving, fittingly, from left to right. It was as though he knew we were tired of waiting for the new record, and peppered his classics with new hits in the making. One such song, “Sacrifice” came off as a polished Prince classic.

D’Angelo may be rocking a few extra pounds but his falsetto is as smooth and nubile as it’s ever been.

The first ten minutes served as a reminder of why we are so willing to wait for this man. The medley served up shades of Prince, James Brown and Al Green, and even a little Hendrix on the guitar solos. A new track called “Charade”, felt very steeped in the Afro-Punk tradition, but the strobe lights and big ‘80s style guitar felt very confusing and perhaps a little more than the (often criticized) Sound Academy sound

board could handle. Next came “Devil’s Pie” which felt rushed and perhaps caught up in the building energy of the band and crowd.

Once freed of his hot pink guitar, D’Angelo really shone and had the audience shaking their hands for a James Brown rendition of “Chicken Grease.” The highlight of the show was an intimate set with just D’Angelo and an electric piano on a riser under a single spot light. It was here he performed the 1979 Smokey Robinson classic “Cruisin’”, and it was beautiful. Simple, stripped and oh-so intimate, it was a great lead in to the song everyone was waiting to hear, “Untitled”. Despite several audience requests to remove his shirt D’Angelo was shooting for the heart. Hey there Remarkers. Do you know what my favourite column in most magazines is? I know I should say the sex column, but alas, I’m a cheapskate who is terrified of making purchases that aren’t worthwhile.

So naturally, I love the columns where magazine staff test out new products that are hot and report on their effectiveness.

It saves us all the trouble of shopping around! This month, I thought I would combine my love for saving a buck with my love for getting off, and share my new found knowledge with all of you.

As a woman approaching 30, I’ve started to find myself more easily aroused than I was only a few years ago. It often occurs when I’m on my own, watching one of those borderline pornographic HBO or Starz shows (I love sexy TV!), or just daydreaming. I’ve had vibrators in the past, but I guess I’m a little rough on them because they don’t last long. Perhaps I buy the wrong ones, or maybe vibrators are like iPods, and they just have a short shelf life. Whatever the case might be, I’m not embarrassed to buy vibrators per say, but I am a little embarrassed to be spending an arm and a leg on a new sex toy regularly. So I decided to do a little investigation into inexpensive and unconventional “tools” to help out those of you that aren’t comfortable entering a sex shop, or just aren’t comfortable spending almost $100 for a decent orgasm.

The first cheap thrill I sought out was one that some of you may have tried before.

I had experimented with it a couple of times, but was never comfortable really getting into it until I got my own place. Of course, I am speaking of the detachable showerhead. I went to the local hardware store and found a five-setting massage spray showerhead on sale for $14.39, marked down from $35.99. I went home and was surprised to find how easy it was to install! I didn’t need any tools and it only leaked a little bit when I turned it on!

Next I went with the handheld back massager, a natural substitute for the vibrator. These can be found at your local big-box store or liquidation warehouse.

I purchased mine for $15.99 and it looks like a bug. This little guy felt the most like a standard vibrator would, especially since it takes two AA batteries, and gives off approximately the same speed of vibrations. Since these back massagers are designed to be held against the body, using the “jitterbug” as I’ve come to call him, felt comfortable and natural. It didn’t take long to get off, and even though it wasn’t a body rocking ‘O’, it was still satisfactory and I was off to dreamland in no time. 3.5 stars out of 5.

Lastly, I went with a newer product on the market. I purchased a Durex Play Delight at a drug store for $19.99. It is a mini bullet-style vibrator that isn’t much larger than a tube of lipstick. It has a smooth silicone coating on it that feels nice to the touch, takes one AAA battery and gives off a very strong, fast vibration.

The Durex Play Delight takes some time to get used to, as it only has one speed, and has a small tip which concentrates the vibration in one small spot. It was also sort of awkward to hold onto and maneuver.

Once I got used to the intensity and size though, the ‘O’s came fast and furious.

It produced the most intense orgasms of the three, and was by far the best deal of the bunch. If you can get past buying a sex toy at a place where everyone else is buying Band-Aids and sunscreen, I highly recommend giving this little wonder a try.

Matsui also maintains Crankytown, a project with long time collaborators Liane Balaban and Jenna Wright. It’s an interactive, educational website that provides information about menstruation to young girls and women around the world. Crankytown uses film, puppetry and animation to help educate and includes original pieces by such artists as Feist, Emma Thompson and Jess Pare.

Along with Crankytown, Vanessa produces Crankyfest, an online video competition for films about periods, which launched in January of this year and is juried by Meaghan Rath, Rachelle Lefevre and Jane Grenier.

Finally, in Halifax filming City TV’s Seed, which has just been renewed for a second season. Seed is produced by Joseph Raso (Zombies & Cheerleaders) and Mark Farrell (This Hour Has 22 Minutes, Corner Gas). It’s a fresh take on the family comedy, with laugh-out-loud moments and tender scenes. Vanessa plays the sardonic Irene, with wit and charm.

In preparing to write this piece I found myself getting angry.

I knew that anger was the worst possible place from which to jump. I was always certain of what I wanted to articulate but struggled to find a way in, and then I found this: “Gay people are born into and belong to every society in the world. They are all ages, all races, all faith. They are doctors and teachers, farmers and bankers, soldiers and athletes. And whether we know it, or whether we acknowledge it, they are our family, our friends and our neighbours. Being gay is not a western invention, it is a human reality.” -Hillary Clinton Leave it to Hillary Clinton to express what I felt. This piece is not an attempt to explain to you the validity of one relationship or another, nor is it an attempt to justify anyone’s “life choices”. It is, in fact, the exact opposite. At the very core of this it feels like we are discussing “degrees of humanity”, that is to say one human has more right to the earth than another. Too often in a “conversation” I hear people’s humanity being called into question, one’s ability to love or live free of suffering.

Often I am asked to speak on behalf of “the gays” and I sometimes think, would you allow another brunette to speak on your behalf? One who knew nothing about you, simply because you share a single trait? I read of people pleading in courts for their “right” to be human. It troubles me that in 2013 in countries claiming to be the best in the world that one human would entertain the idea of justifying his or her “humanness” to another. I feel as though we’ve already had this conversation several times before in our tainted history.

Human is human, full stop. I think at this point in our progress we have developed an ability to focus so intently on the flaws of others as a means to disregard our own opportunities to page 52 | the stylish life magazine

evolve. Even television has become an opportunity to say: “well at least I’m not like them” with the Honey Boo Boo’s and Hoarders of the world.

I believe we have created an environment in which people do not have to take any responsibility for the energy they bring to a situation. Thus making it easy to spout mindless hatespeak all under the heading of conservatism. The problem is the knee-jerk, reactionary nature of the exchange, an irrational commitment to tradition and ugly prejudice. Much (most) opposition to social reform is merely inherited prejudice born of privilege. We seem to forget the evolutionary nature of the universe. The fear of change is so great that we create blind spots to accommodate our own needs; the “greater good” is rarely in the forefront of anyone’s mind. This creates the need to defend on the other side, and valuable exchange goes out the window. So you see, in an environment such as this it is impossible to come to any sort of resolution. Forgetting that first, I believe the fact that this is even something to be discussed or resolved is ridiculous, from a human perspective.

From a democratic political standpoint, a May 9th, 2013 poll by ABC news showed 55% of Americans are in favour of marriage equality. Democracy, as I recall it from social studies class requires 51% of the vote, so “conversation” over, no?

It is not my aim to change anyone’s opinions here, but to simply ask you to take some responsibility for the opinion you choose. Are you being true to yourself, or merely repeating what was said to you by generations before? It is our duty as not citizens but humans, to remember that at the end of the day we are all one species and to take responsibility for the energy we bring to any given situation. It is my great desire that at the very least this leaves you with some new perspectives to consider.

Very cool & reminiscent of Southern summer flavours. The touch of carbonation really sets off the watermelon flavour perfectly.

10 TIPS FOR LOSING WEIGHT

Most people are finding it hard to live a healthier lifestyle each day and losing weight is usually on the top of their wish list. As a result of these unhealthy lifestyle choices people gravitate towards fad diets. However, 90% of diets don’t work. According to a new study published in American Psychologist, two-thirds of people trying to lose weight with a significantly reduced calorie diet will gain back that weight (plus some extra pounds) within four to five years.

Dieting is associated with extreme hunger which can cause further weight problems since your body has to rebel against you not feeding it properly. The symptom is binge eating.

To lose weight successfully you must do a combination of things to improve your overall lifestyle.

1. Watch Your Portion Sizes. The rule of thumb is to not eat until you’re full, but to stop eating when you’re about to become full. Your stomach can only detect if it is full within 20 minutes of eating/drinking the first meal. By eating larger portions earlier in the day you will lose calories. Even if you ate a substantial breakfast, you will make up for it by eating less for dinner.

6. Once In A While Eat Your Favourite Meals. Eat the foods that you love because if you deny yourself of these foods you will end up binge eating. At the same time, eat your favourite meals in moderation. To avoid temptation to over eat, try to avoid hanging around the kitchen or standing around the chips and dip at a party.

2. Eat Your Largest Meals Early In The Day. I call this the upside down pyramid. Typically the largest meals are eaten at dinner and the smallest at breakfast. Change this so that breakfast is your largest meal and dinner your smallest, while lunch is in the middle. By skimping daytime meals you are more likely to over eat at night.

7. Make A Meal Plan That Works For You. It’s ok to consume extra calories on days that require you to have more energy, such as a long day at work, extra-long workouts, etc.

3. Don’t Eat Mindlessly. Eat when your body needs fuel, not when you are bored, stressed or eating food for the purpose of entertainment.

Distract yourself by doing something other than eating. You become unusually hungry late at night, so the best solution is to go to sleep earlier therefore you will have an excuse to have a big breakfast.

4. Know Your Body Composition. Knowing how much excess fat you have can help determine an appropriate weight loss goal. Weigh yourself at least once a week but don’t become neurotic about it.

5. Eat Slowly. The brain takes 20 minutes to receive the signal that your belly is full. Slow eating can save you excess calories and you’ll have time to enjoy your meal.

8. Eat Closer To The Earth. Avoid processed foods as much as possible.

By eating foods that are the ingredient instead of foods that contain ingredients, you will burn more calories in the process.

9. Include The “Five” Food Groups. For every meal include as many nutrient dense foods as possible and eat at least two kinds of foods for your snacks. Stay away from single foods as this limits your intake of a variety of vitamins, minerals and other nutritious foods. By combining many different nutrients in one meal, you are less likely to over eat.

10. Stay Active. You don’t have to be at the gym everyday to get that cut and lean body you’ve been eyeing in the health magazine. By staying active throughout the day you burn calories.

Architectural finishes include custom carpentry work painted in a semi-gloss white that makes the opening a grand feature.

DESIGN The cabinetry is classic in styling using a painted raised panel MDF door in cloud white. The kitchen features a beautiful hood above the cooktop, statuario marble counter tops and modern day appliances. The island was done in a stain to compliment the traditional dining table and a butcher block top was used to make the space less formal.

LIGHTING Technology and lighting all ties in together creating a practical working space while entertaining guests. The use of LED recessed lighting produces a great amount of light while using minimal electricity. Over the peninsula pendant lights were used to create a more intimate mood which complements the glass doors with decorative lead inserts. Under cabinetry lighting were installed to ensure the counters had evenly distributed task lighting while preparing meals.

There is a new type of family dynamic gaining momentum in recent years called co-parenting. This is when two biological parents who have a close and trusting but nonromantic and non-sexual relationship, contribute to raising a family. Perspective parents can sign up on websites, similar to dating sites, such as “MyAlternativeFamily. com”, in hopes of meeting the person who they feel can offer what he or she is looking for in a mother or father to their offspring. Although they may not always be legally binding, many “couples” choose to define their roles within a contract that is written before conception occurs.

The popular choice for most is forming an agreement to contribute equally for the financial, social and emotional needs of their child(ren).

What are the reasons people choose this type of arrangement and why is it growing in popularity now?

In the beginning, co-parenting was a choice that was most popular among the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered communities, and it still is. However, more heterosexual individuals have turned to co-parenting for reasons such as their ever increasing age, and the acknowledgement that though they may have hopes of someday finding “the one”, their bodies may only be healthy enough and capable of child bearing for a little while longer. Another major reason people decide to become co-parents is that it is affordable. There is not yet enough research to determine if this style of family dynamics is more or less beneficial to the children involved, but we can speculate about some of the pros and cons of co-parenting and the possible effects it will have on the children in the future. Some people argue that romance and a strong emotional bond between a married couple is the glue that holds them together through the major adjustments and sometimes trying times involved in raising a young family. These romantic couples role model what healthy relationships look like, so their offspring can grow to foster their own, healthy, loving relationships. But, platonic partners have their own parents and other relatives who can role model this sort of healthy relationship.

Let’s consider situations where a marriage turns sour, and the children bear witness to verbal abuse, criticism, ridicule, disrespect and even violence. What kind of role modelling is that?

In many cases, when a marriage falls apart, families struggle with their newly split roles and responsibilities. The unfortunate reality is that the children become the ones stuck in the middle, or worse, used as pawns for parents to manipulate each other. In most cases, a co-parenting contract would outline roles and responsibilities for each partner, in the event that the partnership is no longer amicable. Again, these contracts are typically drawn up before the co-parenting couple enter the conception stage of their agreement.

Children born into co-parenting partnerships are planned for, wanted and welcomed into loving, nurturing arms. Sadly, this is not always the case for youngsters born because of unplanned pregnancies.

On the surface, it may seem that co-parenting is the fancy free way to parenthood bliss, but it is still too early to tell. In any case, whether a romantic couple decide to take the plunge, or are thrown into the deep end, and when two consenting platonic adults chose to have children, one thing remains certain. Children need loving, consistent and predictable parenting in order for healthy development to take place.

Chef Paul Rogalski’s Recipe For

PEPPERCORN STEAK Ingredients: • 4 beef tenderloin steaks (cut 1.5 in thick) • 2 tablespoons canola oil • 1 tablespoon cracked black pepper • 1 tablespoon kosher salt • 1 tablespoon butter • 2 tablespoons shallots (chopped) • 2 tablespoons green peppercorns in brine • 2oz red wine • 4oz beef stock or consommé • 4oz heavy cream • 2 oz brandy • 1 teaspoon fresh marjoram (chopped) Directions: 1. Bring Steaks up to room temperature; sprinkle both sides evenly with cracked pepper and a sprinkle of salt, gently pressing into steak.

Heat All Clad 12” Sauté Pan over medium-low temperature with the canola oil. When hot carefully ad steaks, increase temperature to medium and cook to desired doneness turning ½ way through cooking process. (For medium rare doneness cook for approximately 4 to 5 minutes a side.)

2. When cooked remove steak from pan and set aside to rest. Make sure to save the juice from the resting process, as you will need it later. Add butter, shallots and green peppercorns to the pan and continue cooking over medium-high heat until the shallots have become translucent.

In this order add red wine to deglaze, then beef stock, cream and brandy. *Be careful, as the alcohol might flame as it evaporates. Adding the brandy to the pan first can be downright explosive. Be very careful!

3. Reduce to sauce consistency, add marjoram, remove from heat and stir in the drippings from the resting steaks. Serve immediately any way you like. Sauce on side or on the steak. Enjoy!

She performs live often and has been nominated for countless awards. Remark was lucky enough to have some time with Kate, and she revealed some very personal thoughts as well as an exciting new announcement!

kate todd leisure Let’s start at the beginning. What is your earliest memory of being inspired musically?

“Music permeated throughout the walls and halls on all levels of our home growing up as a child in the country. My dad had a drum kit as well as an extensive LP collection in our basement. I remember my girlfriends and I would look at all the album covers and being fascinated with the artwork. My grandmother was an organist and choir leader at our church where I performed many piano recitals at a young age... my earliest public performances!

My first concert experience was going to a rock festival near my hometown that featured Alanis Morissette. I remember thinking what a powerful performance by a female musician and she’s Canadian!”

How did your character Lily on Radio Free Roscoe influence your music?

“Having no real previous acting experience, my musical background helped me to land the role of Lily/Shady Lane on Radio Free Roscoe. Lily my character, like me had an alternative approach to her music with influences ranging from bands like The White Stripes, Pavement, and The Flaming Lips to The Rolling Stones. I like to believe I take some of that rootsy, authentic, alternative sound to my writing and my overall musical vibe.”

Who’s your biggest musical influence? What artists inspire you?

“I am inspired by any artist who has followed their dream and taken to the stage or has written an original song. A few notable names that come to mind whose music and style has influenced me would be that of Bob Dylan, Sheryl Crow and Faith Hill.”

Musically, who do you strive to be like, and have you been compared to anyone?

“I am striving to become the most authentic artist that I can be.

I believe that knowing oneself is the most powerful tool an artist can have and I am learning more about myself each day.”

What does your album represent to you?

“Finding My Way is a coming of age album. I wanted it to be an inspirational, uplifting collection of song and celebration that could be relatable to other young people going through the changes and transitions in order to pursue their dreams to reality.

Finding My Way also meditates on the past as heard in my song “(Things I) Never Should Have Said” and it also talks of the desire for new experiences which is what my title track, “Finding My Way” speaks to.”

What’s the story behind your songs “Drive” and “Footprints on the Moon”? “”Drive” is based upon a road trip I took with my friend on Route 66. It was a bit of a “Thelma and Louise” journey and “Drive” was inspired by the good times we had along that legendary highway.” “”Footprints on the Moon” written in the dead of winter. I knew I wanted to write an uplifting and inspirational song and that term “Footprints on the Moon” had been thrown around and it seemed like a great song title. The title inspired the song.”

Any plans for your next album?

“I continue to write and am currently in preproduction with a collection of songs I have. So stay tuned as they say!”

You have won many awards over the last few years including Best New Artist from RadioNation, and are nominated for the Country Music Association of Ontario’s Rising Star award. How are all of these nominations and awards making you feel?

“Well thank you! It is very cool to be recognized by your peers for your efforts and I am deeply honored, but that aside it all

comes down to the music. I’m so fortunate to continue to do what I love, making music surrounded by family, friends and supportive fans in the company of a community of talented fellow musicians.”

You always seem so calm and collected on stage, has stage fright ever been a factor for you?

“Ah, to be honest I used to have stage fright just like my character Shady Lane in Radio Free Roscoe until one night a few years ago before a performance. I’ll never forget it was at The Mint Club in Los Angeles. The sound technician noticed me nervously rehearsing backstage before my show. I can’t tell you what he said due to the graphic nature but it has become a little inside joke that just seems to cut through the butterflies every time. So, not so much anymore. I love playing live before an audience and I always get excited before my shows and try to channel that energy into my performance.”

What do you do when you’re not performing or writing new songs?

“My day job is teaching both music and acting, so I cherish the downtime I have hanging out with friends and riding my bike along the waterfront where I live. I also love keeping in touch with nature and when the budget allows; travelling!”

Any new movies or shows we should watch out for?

“I am proud to announce a short film I was involved in titled S is for Bird, is being shown at Cannes 2013! Very exciting! Currently I am remaining focused on my love of music and am continuing to write and perform while honing my guitar skills and technique.

I really should adopt one. No, to be honest, I do like to keep active, ride my bike as much as possible, drink lots of water and eat mainly all real and natural foods. But mainly my regimen is to have fun and enjoy life because the happiest people are the most beautiful, to me.”

Expect to see your fair share of blood, sweat and broken bones in the octagon. It’s the last place you would expect to see a lady, right?

WRONG! The beauties of the cage are quickly gaining exposure in the forever popular mixed martial arts world, creating a whole new level of intimidation for the gents to have to compete with.

A little over a decade ago, women MMA fighters were few and far between.

A handful of athletes would participate in main events held in small town auditoriums, casinos and arenas in the United States. Some women even opted to travel abroad to participate in all-female venues where countries like Japan had already begun holding such events. Fighter femmes everywhere can thank a certain young Judo champion from California for helping to raise the female exposure in today’s MMA world by making the UFC cage her battle ground.

Ronda “Rowdy” Rousey, a 26 year old bantamweight has been ranked the top poundper-pound female mixed martial artist in the world by numerous reputable MMA publications. She helped solidify this unofficial title by taking her opponent, exmilitary Liz Carnouche, out in the first round by submission in her staple arm bar in the

first UFC Women’s fight. UFC President, Dana White, along with amazing fighters such as Ronda Rousey have opened the doors and created many opportunities for other aspiring athletes. There are well over 100 women taking strikes in the MMA world and with the Women’s Division in UFC now available to them as a venue, we can expect to see the popularity of the sport continue to rise amongst the ladies.

There are many levels of benefits of MMA training.

Combining multiple disciplined martial arts such as Muay Thai, Boxing, Jujitsu, Grappling and more, it encompasses strength training, endurance, flexibility and coordination.

It is very unique in a way that its main focus is selfdefense and guides you not to use your skills towards violence. This being said, it is a graphic sport and when taken to a competitive level, it involves strict dieting and training regimes. It will teach you discipline, patience and humility but also comes with many physical, mental and spiritual rewards, that is, if you can look past the bruises, blood and fractures.

Think that you might have the “cahoonas’ to step into the octagon? Look at joining one of the many gyms that are geared specifically to offering classes and preparing athletes for

MMA training. If you want to step into it slowly and test your “badass-ness”, try implementing some pad or bag work into your cardio training with the following 30 minute punching workout two to three times a week: • 3 minutes of quick jabs (short, quick punches to the bag or pads) • 1 minute rest • 3 minutes of heavy strikes (heavier force, extending the arm and shoulder into the punch) • 1 minute rest • 3 minutes of freestyle combo (combine both quick jabs and heavy strikes) • Repeat as many times as possible then follow up with 30 minutes of jogging.

You will increase you cardiovascular endurance, strength and conditioning and game-face confidence by adding some training samples from MMA to your regular workout regime. If you can handle the intensity of the sport, maybe one day you will be in your very own stare down before getting ready to rumble in the cage.

Just remember to keep your fists up.
