CAT EYES: The cat eyes reigns strong this season with variations of classic black, silver grey and purple. For ultra stand-out eyes, try a winged eye in classic black, inspired by the look at Lanvin. Black complements all eye colours and the upturn of the tail is also universally flattering: an instant facelift minus the surgery!

MAROONED: Shades of wine also extended to the eyelids of models at the Gucci and Oscar de la Renta shows. For vivid colour (and longer lasting power!), layer a matching cream eye shadow underneath your powder eye shadow. Use your handiest tool--literally, your fingers--to blend out the edges for a painterly effect.

GLITTERATI: The eyelids showcased a new form of bling, as glitter made a comeback at shows like Chanel and Donna Karan. Keep glitter wearable and classy, by keeping its application close to the lash line and the rest of your makeup neutral.

REAL EXPERIENCE, REAL PEOPLE

REAL EXPERIENCE, REAL PEOPLE

TRYING TO BRING A BIT OF JOY BACK TO THE CHILDREN WHO LOST IT ALL BY MELISSA GIBBS

12 | the stylish life magazine

REAL EXPERIENCE, REAL PEOPLE

Death, cancer, and suicide are topics that we generally try to avoid talking about. Just reading the words can be uncomfortable and upsetting. Dealing with the death of a loved one is difficult and confusing at any age and can be especially so when you are a child. Recently, I was given the unique opportunity to volunteer for Camp Erin Toronto, an overnight bereavement camp for kids and teens aged 6 to 17 who have experienced the death of someone close to them. In its fifth year in Toronto, Camp Erin is run by the Moyer Foundation, and is a weekend that gives kids the chance to grieve and reflect in a safe environment, and perhaps most importantly, shows them that they are not alone. In the weeks leading up to camp, I thought a lot more about my own experiences with death and in particular, my mom, who died of cancer when I was twelve years old. Even with the training sessions that the volunteers received beforehand, I wasn’t exactly sure what the weekend had in store for me…

How comfortable would I be talking about death? Would I know how to answer these kids’ questions? What kind of personal journey was I about to go through? …the thing that immediately became clear to me, was that this was going to be a once in a lifetime experience that I would not forget. At first glance, Camp Erin looks like any other camp; a weekend full of laughter, camp songs, swimming and s’mores. However, once you scratched the surface, it became pretty clear to me that these kids were going to go home with more than just a tan and a couple of bug bites.

a safe space where these kids could talk and reflect. In a weekend full of experiences, one of the most significant and moving for me happened on the first night. Everyone was asked to bring a picture of the person who had died, and were given the opportunity to present their picture to the group and tell their story, and then post it on a board that was displayed in the common area for the rest of the weekend. For me, to be in a room surrounded by people who had gone through a similar experience was incredibly surreal and the feeling of togetherness was undeniable. I tend to roll my eyes whenever my dad starts talking philosophically and throws around the word ‘profound’, but in this case, that is exactly what this weekend was for me; profound. It was absolutely amazing to witness how supportive these kids were of each other and how close they became in such a short period of time. The display of courage and support came in many different forms throughout the weekend and I am incredibly proud to be able to say that I was a part of something so special. A JOURNEY OF PARIS ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY JEREMY MCCORMACK

Hemingway called Paris a ‘moveable feast’ and if you go when you are young, it will stay with you forever. But Paris, the city of lights will stay with you no matter what age you are when you visit. The city is a delight with its fine buildings, twisting alleys bejeweled with chocolate shops, dark wooded neighbourhood cafés and the ever-changing light. the stylish life magazine |

THE SEINE

CAFÉ DE FLORE

THIS IS PARIS Take in the beauty of the Seine by boat or bicycle, or enjoy wandering the book and art stalls lining the historic river.

CATHEDRAL OF NOTRE DAME

Café de Flore is one of Hemingway’s watering holes, one that is largely unchanged since the 1920’s. Visiting the booth where one may imagine he wrote a great short story is delightfully associative, but more than anything, it says that everything is possible. Be inspired by the greatness of this city and then find your own neighbourhood bar. As one of the few European cities undamaged by World War II, Paris is a wonder to walk through. Just when you think you have seen every great building and square, there is another neighbourhood with even more architecture to be discovered. A must see, the famous Louvre is a monument to consider from many angles, and the Cathedral of Notre Dame is an ancient architectural marvel.

HOW TO PAINT YOUR NAILS LIKE A PRO WRITTEN BY DELIA LUPAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY NATALIA BORECKA MANICURE, MAKEUP AND HAIR: DELIA LUPAN/JUDY INC MODEL: ALYSSA WINEGARDEN

26 | the stylish life magazine

NAILS LIKE A PRO

PREPARE YOUR NAILS Start by taking off old polish, wiping your nails with a nail polish remover (preferably non-acetone). File your nails to get your desired shape by moving the file smoothly in one direction only. Make sure the shape is flattering! Filing back and forth shreds the layers of the nail, leading to peeling and breaking. Use a cuticle remover to push back your cuticles and buff out any ridges on your nails using a buffing block. Wipe nails clean with rubbing alcohol instead of polish remover, as some remover formulas leave behind a residue that prevents polish from adhering properly. By doing this you also get rid of any natural oils on your nails, helping the nail polish stay smooth and last longer. Now you are ready to paint! APPLY A GOOD FOUNDATION A base coat makes the polish go on smoothly and last longer. It will also prevent the polish from staining your nails, especially if you use dark colours. If your nails are fragile or have ridges, choose a base that doubles as a treatment and also has strengthening properties. Apply a thin base coat and allow it to fully dry. ROLL THE POLISH For about 25-30 seconds, roll the polish bottle between your hands. Rolling it will warm the product and mix it. Do not shake the bottle as it may cause air bubbles to form which will affect the finish. Open the bottle and lightly swipe one side of the brush along the inside edge of the bottle. FIRST COAT Apply a thin layer of nail polish over the base coat. Begin by placing the brush in the middle of the nail, away

from the cuticle and push downward (which fans the bristles out) in one stroke until you almost touch the cuticle. Let the brush do the work. The next stroke will be slightly off center. Lightly press the brush and allow it to spread while moving it from cuticle to tip. This will help the brush reach the edges of your nail completely. Paint the other side the same way. Don’t worry if the polish appears too thin, the second coat will repair the inconsistency. Paint all of your nails using the same technique. SECOND COAT Apply the second coat of nail polish the exact same way that you did the first layer. Although some nail polishes require a third coat, most of them don’t, so keep in mind that multiple layers can lead to smudging. CLEAN UP Clean up any mistakes along the edges using a little makeup brush or a cotton swab dipped in polish remover, making sure you squeeze out the surplus. Don’t stop until your nails look perfect and there are no smudges or polish on your skin. TOP COAT Apply a fast drying topcoat. The topcoat will seal everything, fill in any irregularities, make your polish last longer, and add a beautiful shine to the colour. CUTICLES Cuticle oil makes the top layer of your nails slick and can help reduce marks as your manicure dries. To avoid dryness of the cuticles and to keep the nails supple and chip free, it is recommended to apply the oil daily. BE PATIENT Wait for your nails to completely dry before you do anything else. Waiting for the polish to dry is as tedious as it sounds, but it’s well worth it after all of your hard work. Once everything is completely dry, apply your favorite hand cream to soften your hands.

PAINT YOUR NAILS LIKE A PRO

Too often you see women with lovely hair and makeup who completely ruin their beautiful look with entirely frayed nails. 20 minutes of devotion to your nails once a week is all it takes to keep your hands attractively manicured and your appearance complete.

The Kind Life BY CAIT MIZZI

When Remark Magazine approached me about writing a piece about what it is to be vegan, I excitedly said YES! The opportunity to define veganism, to a new audience, as I see it, is exciting. It allows me the chance to inspire people to think differently about the choices they make in regards to their health, the environment and animal rights. There was a kicker though; it had to be done in 500 words or less. I began drumming away at the keyboard, feeling like I would never be able to shed light on it all. After deep thought through sheer panic, I realized that it’s really very simple: I see veganism as a possible solution to a laundry list of problems. Meat production is responsible for creating more greenhouse gases than any other industry on the planet. Almost half of the world’s agricultural harvests are needed to raise animals for human consumption. Try to imagine, approximately 150 million cattle alone are slaughtered each year in the United States. Those 150 million cattle must graze. Grazing is currently occupying about 26% of the earth’s surface which significantly speeds- up land degradation. This means deforestation, soil quality decline and desertification. These examples immediately give veganism the illusion that it would be a complicated nut to crack. It isn’t. Living as a vegan is simply about forward thinking, acting compassionately towards all life, and sacrificing a few comforts for the greater good; your health, your planet and your future. As more attention is brought to the realities of the food industry; use of

pesticides, growth hormones, antibiotics and acts of animal cruelty within it; veganism is having a widespread increase in popularity. This can easily be identified by the growing number of plant based products lining the shelves of most mainstream grocery stores. The flourishing presence of vegan bakeries, restaurants and clothing shops are undeniable. People are rapidly coming to face the harsh realities of how our food, cosmetics, clothing and furniture all come to be. Given the abundance of information available, we now know that animal products and by-products are not necessary to maintain good health. The term vegan was defined by The Vegan Society in 1944; a century after the term vegetarian had been officially outlined by The Vegetarian Society in Great Britain. The word vegan takes the word vegetarian to its logical conclusion. “A way of living which excludes all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, the animal kingdom, and includes a reverence for life. It applies to the practice of living on the products of the plant kingdom to the exclusion of flesh, fish, fowl, eggs, honey, animal milk and its derivatives, and encourages the use of alternatives for all commodities derived wholly or in part from animals.” For every vegan that definition means something different. For me, it means making conscious choices for the health of myself, my son and our planet every single day. I believe it is our responsibility and in our absolute best interest to understand the industries which we support. This understanding has brought me here and keeps me forever committed to the kind life. the stylish life magazine |

DISASTER FIRST DATES

The Thief While walking to the restaurant, my date and I passed a Shoppers Drug Mart. He asked if we could make a quick stop. Inside the store, I wandered off on my own as I did not want to rush or crowd him. Also, we barely knew each other, and the probability of an ‘ick’ moment was high (it was a pharmacy, after all). I busied myself with leafing through magazines and performing a surreptitious tooth and boogie check in the mirror. I waited for him to find me. 5 minutes passed. I sprayed hydrating thermal spring water onto my face. 10 minutes passed. I examined the “Killer Kisses” lipstick display, trying to determine which shade would increase my likelihood of receiving said “killer kiss.” I started getting antsy. I made my way up and down the aisles, but there was no sign of my date. Perhaps he had finished making his purchase and was waiting for me outside? A quick scan of the street revealed no date. Rain began to fall, and I pulled up my hood and waited. After 45 minutes, he emerged, grinning sheepishly. “What happened?” I asked. It turns out that my date had been caught shoplifting. He was escorted by a security guard into a back room. After a lengthy argument and threats to call the police, they had finally agreed to let him go, under the premise that he would never return to the store. I stood in silence, shocked and soaking wet. My date zipped up his coat, and smiled at me. “Are you hungry?” he asked. — BY BRITTANY S.

DISASTER FIRST DATES

lifestyle

Bloody Mary Last summer, I was on a first date where we decided to go for drinks and appetizers on a patio. Everything was going well until I started drinking the Bloody Mary I ordered. About half an hour into it, I noticed my eyes were getting itchy so I started to rub them, thinking it was no big deal and chalking it up to seasonal allergies. A few minutes after that, my date asked me if I was ok. I said yes, sure, I just feel like I have itchy eyes, and said it must be something in the air. I did not think it was anything to be concerned over. He asked me again, “Are you sure you are ok?” I really didn’t understand why he was questioning me so much with a look of concern. Soon after, I realized my eyes were swelling shut very quickly and, I decided we should cut the date short. I ran home and took a quick look in the mirror and screamed. My entire face was blown up like a balloon. Apparently I was allergic to the Clamato juice in the drink. I could not believe he didn’t even tell me! We rescheduled a second date and I never saw him after that. — BY JENNIFER S.

Kinky Having just wrapped up another failing, casual relationship, I was determined to break my own patterns and try dating someone different. At a first glance, he was boring and awkward, but I talked myself into giving him a chance despite my instincts crying out that we just did not fit. He picked me up in a cab and asked if I would like to go to a convention. The convention he suggested was actually the ‘Everything to do with Sex ‘ show! I am no prude, but walking around a concrete building stuffed to the gills with dildos, fetish wear, and porn stars can be uncomfortable in the best of circumstances, let alone with a guy you just met. Within moments, we were approached by a leather-suited man, who asked if we would be interested in making our very own porn video, for our own private enjoyment - of course. Next, a nice lady with breasts that could crush my head asked my date if he would like a customized dildo made of his package so I would not be lonely when he is away. A few awkward giggles, and we

continued deeper into the aisles full of people searching for their own bit of kink. We had some more interesting exchanges with vendors looking to entice us, but I decided to call it a day when a pair of latex-clad twins stopped my date to ask if my boobs were nicer than theirs. My date then proceeded to put his hands on their boobs, then onto mine. We had yet to kiss, so getting a third hand feel-up was just too much for me. I suggested we go somewhere we could actually talk, like coffee or lunch and he agreed. The final punch line came in the form of weather. It had begun to pour rain and sleet while we were in the show, and he had no car or plan. We ended up standing in the pouring rain/sleet for 20 minutes trying to hail a cab, in mid- November, with no outdoor clothes on. By the time we got back to my neighbourhood, I was sniffling and coughing so we called it a day. Trust your instincts. My gut knew it just wasn’t a good fit and I could have saved myself an unpleasant cold, and more action than I needed from strangers. — BY ALAYNA K. the stylish life magazine |

well as respected brand created by Jay Levine, who was there for the full run. I’m also very proud of IN FASHION, which I hosted and co-produced for 10 years. With this show, we were able to spend more time with local designers and place the spotlight on the great talent we have in the Canadian fashion industry. We were able to include them alongside some of the biggest names from Milan, Paris, New York and London. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MEN’S FASHION DESIGNER? I was dressed exclusively from head to toe for 20 years by Hugo Boss, wearing only their fashion forward label HUGO, and followed later by their main BOSS label. It was one of the most envied clothing deals in Canadian broadcasting. Some guys can be brand loyal and BOSS is such a good fit for me. I’m also a big fan of Dsquared2 and Ports 1961. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE WOMEN’S FASHION DESIGNER? Alber Elbaz for Lanvin. YOU HAVE TRAVELLED A FAIR AMOUNT FOR WORK. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE DESTINATION? I’ve been very fortunate to interview fascinating and accomplished people all over the world and cover some great events in places like Ibiza, Bora Bora, Tahiti, Dubai and Abu Dhabi. My favourite however, is Milan for menswear fashion week because of all the clothes, the shows and the vibe. Top designers like Vivienne Westwood, Donatella Versace, Roberto Cavalli, Giorgio Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, Dan and Dean Caten, to name a few, are more relaxed and approachable during the less-hyped men’s shows, than when they present their women’s collections. They will give you longer interviews in January and June. If you get excited over men’s fashion, then Milan really is the place to be. I admire and respect Italian heritage and tradition when it comes to fashion (the food isn’t bad either!). I’ve also enjoyed covering strong fashion weeks in places like Istanbul, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Copenhagen and Medellin, Colombia.

where I’ve been, what I’ve seen and who I’ve met, with a larger audience. I travel alone, so I don’t get to share those memories of lasting value with anyone at the time. It’s also, just another way to tell someone’s story. Instead of interviewing with the help of a microphone and a video camera, I get to tell their story with one frame, one image. I’ve also had the chance to document countries that have changed so much over the years. Today’s Thailand, Sri Lanka or Vietnam are very different than when I was there in the early 90s. I feel very fortunate to have spent several months in Egypt, Israel and Turkey in the late 80s and more recently Mali, Ethiopia, Burma, Benin, Niger, Yemen and Pakistan, which have been the most exciting travel experiences I’ve ever had. WHAT BOOK ARE YOU READING AT THE MOMENT? I am currently reading Concerto A La Memoire D’un Ange a collection of short stories in French by Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt. WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU? I’m most excited about two reality TV shows that I’ve been developing. It is too early in the process to share the details. WHAT IS THE ONE THING IN LIFE YOU HAVEN’T HAD THE CHANCE TO DO, BUT REALLY WANT TO? I’ve done everything I’ve ever dreamed of doing. Now I just want to do more of it!

HOW DID YOU GET INTO PHOTOGRAPHY? My photography (www.glenbaxter.ca) is a direct result of all the backpacking I’ve done over the years. Travelling and taking pictures along the way, like any other tourist. I improved with every trip. Over the last 25 years, I’ve travelled through 50 countries and I’ve donated my photos to charity. I’ve raised $60,000 for Right To Play with the sale of my photography. This has been done through an annual exhibition that has evolved into The Right To Play Ball, and is now in its third year. BABY BOXES

THE REVIVAL OF BABY BOXES IN CANADA BY LG DAVIDSON

Earlier this year, two Edmonton hospitals followed the example of a hospital in Vancouver, British Columbia by offering a safe alternative for parents of unwanted infants. Angel cradles, which are historically referred to as Baby Boxes or Baby Hatches, date all the way back to medieval times, and were fazed out of existence in the late 19th century.

in Canada, and provide a chance for a new beginning for a mother and her baby who face these tough situations. Canadians seem to be on board with the idea. In a nonscientific poll 59 % of people said that the Angel Cradles are a good idea, and 32% agreed that it is an OK idea, but they would like to see more done to deal with the issues at the source through education and support services.

Angel cradles of today are discrete, anonymous, enclosed areas, typically near the emergency section of a hospital. There is an exterior door where a parent can place their infant, leaving it to be cared for and put up for adoption without any questions asked. In Edmonton, an alarm alerts a nurse of a baby’s placement into a bassinet inside the Angels cradle. Sixty seconds after the alarm sounds, a small camera reveals that with no parent in sight, a baby has been left behind. This helps protect the privacy of what is often a heartbreaking moment for the biological mother or father who has had to make the difficult choice of giving up their infant. The baby is then given a medical check and surrendered to Alberta’s Human Services to be put up for adoption.

When baby boxes were first offered around 1195 A.D., their main use was for babies unaccepted by society, due only to the fact that their mothers had birthed them out of wedlock. Thankfully, today’s society is more likely to offer support to people who face an array of challenges such as homelessness, poverty, mental health issues and substance abuse that keep them from caring for a helpless, dependant, yet unplanned and unwanted baby. As history repeats itself and the revival of Baby Boxes appears to be here to stay, perhaps we can build upon these old ideas and move forward with a modern approach. Today’s society can offer care, compassion and non-judgemental support for both the babies and their parents who gave them up. By trying to provide their child a better chance with a new family through the only means available to them, they are offering their child an opportunity to better navigate the path on which they seemed to have stumbled on along the way.

Supporters of the project say that the Angel Cradles will help prevent future cases of abuse, neglect and infanticide

IN BED WITH PANTS

IN BED WITH PANTS BY LAUREN “PANTS” PANTOLIANO

IN BED WITH PANTS

EVERYBODY GETS A RIDE “She’s the town bicycle, everybody gets a ride”. I grew up in a small town, so this saying was one I became familiar with early on in life. . I always thought it was kind of witty and not that offensive, until I heard a girl I knew referred to as the bicycle. It did not bother me that she had been called that, she was a woman I knew to run a bit fast and loose with the fellas. It was that I had slept with a lot of guys who ran in my small-town circles, and it made me wonder if others thought that about me. I didn’t spend much time dwelling on it; after all, I am a sex columnist who has vowed to share all my sexual encounters with you. Well, at least the interesting ones. No one wants to hear about boring old missionary where the only one getting off is Mr. Two Pump Chump. So here it is. Over the span of eight to ten years from late high school to after University I slept with a (large) handful of guys who hung out in the same group as I did. I’m not ashamed of it. I am actually kind of proud to have been the town bicycle. And here’s why... I have a lot of hot and cool guy friends. I mean A LOT. They were practically a dime a dozen in my community, and I had a wide age-range of dudes to choose from. From a few years younger than me to five-plus years older than me, I had great guys who were all within a five - minute drive. Who better to share my bed with than guys who were hot and cool, especially since none of them cared about whether or not a potential girlfriend had slept with a buddy. Oh, and I can’t forget about my brother’s friends. If he only knew… Growing up in a small town meant that I grew up alongside a lot of the guys I later dated, “saw” or had as friends-with-benefits. I was a major

health

tomboy until well into high school, and I was definitely a late-bloomer. This relegated me to the “friend zone” for many of the hot guys I hung out with in town. I was always crushing, and was rarely crushed on. When I hit my stride and came into myself, then it was game-on. All those hot guys I had dreamt about dating were all of a sudden taking notice. The beauty of it all was that they already knew me and considered me a friend, so none of them disrespected me or made me feel like a slut. I was one of the guys, but with body parts they wanted to touch. The guys I slept with were so incredibly unique. I would say I have a “type” when it comes to physical looks that turn me on, but when it comes to lovers, I’m open to options. Not only were each of these guys very different in terms of their looks, but also their personalities were diverse. Shy, outgoing, tall, short, funny, serious, chunky, skinny, intelligent or thick (in mind and other body parts). With each of these very diverse men came highly varied sexual experiences. I learned a lot about my body and myself by allowing my active sex drive to win out over my self-consciousness and concern about other’s opinions. Now I can almost always have an orgasm during sex, and I am incredibly confident sexually. I believe my encounters with these friends and lovers assisted greatly in getting me to the sexually satisfied place I am in today. I can’t say that all town bicycle experiences are as positive and rewarding as mine was. I was lucky to have the men I had in my community, but I hope my story will allow other “good time gals” out there to feel a bit more empowered about their experiences. In my opinion, if the guys are good, who can blame you for wanting to try each of them? Until next time, keep it safe, keep it sexy, and when all else fails, keep it as a great story. — xox, Pants

VEGAN CHOCOLATE TRUFFLES

PHOTOGRAPHY BY DANIELLE MATAR

RAW VEGAN PEPPERMINT CHOCOLATE TRUFFLES BY CAIT MIZZI

What you will need 1/2 cup of coconut oil 3/4 cup of agave 2 tsp of vanilla 1 cup of shredded unsweetened coconut 2 tbsp raw almond butter 1/4 tsp of sea salt 2 1/4 cups of cacao powder 1/2 tsp of peppermint oil 8 bags of organic peppermint tea (cut open the bags and empty the dried tea into a small bowl, set aside)

60 | the stylish life magazine

DIRECTIONS In a food processor or high speed blender add the 1/2 teaspoon of peppermint oil. Follow it with all of the other ingredients, except for the cacao powder. Blend until the ingredients are smooth and transfer into a mixing bowl. Next, begin folding in the cacao powder bit by bit until you develop a thicker consistency, much like the texture and feel of cookie dough. Refrigerate the mixture for about 15 minutes. Remove from the refrigerator and roll into small balls. Dust the balls with the left over cocoa powder or the dried and loose peppermint tea. I alternate each topping for a nice aesthetic. Once your truffles are formed and coated, place on a cookie sheet and refrigerate for an hour. If these do not get gobbled up immediately, store left overs in the fridge as they will eventually go soft left out at room temperature. You can easily manipulate this recipe in order to create different truffle flavours. For example, replace the peppermint oil with cinnamon extract, orange oil, or add in some chili oil if you dare! Change up the outer topping by adding different powders or toppings like ground cinnamon, shredded coconut or crushed walnuts.

SKINCARE READY FOR FALL

GET SKINCARE READY FOR FALL BY JOY DAVID-TILBERG

Most of you have been on vacation mode, but now it’s time to get back to your everyday routine. As you check things off on your to-do list in preparation for fall, add some new skin care products to the list. As the seasons change, so should your skin care products. The transition can make your skin go haywire, but not to worry! We’ve handpicked some products to help your skin ease into the colder and drier weather ahead. Our skin goes through a lot in a day. Whether you’re slathering on SPF or applying layers of concealers to cover that darn zit, your skin can get unbelievably clogged. To really give your skin a deep clean, use a makeup remover like Dermalogica Precleanse.

62 | the stylish life magazine

Work in this oil-based cleanser until it is dry and then add a little water to blend onto your skin. The olive, apricot and kukui nut cuts down on dirt and debris, prepping your skin for the cleanser. It’s an extra step but you’ll really notice a difference in the clarity of your skin! You can be gentle to your skin and still make it feel squeaky clean. I am loving Dermalogica’s UltraCalming Cleanser. It works on all skin types, but especially those that have sensitive skin. The next step will help lock in moisture and keep your skin hydrated. After cleansing, use a toner like Dermalogica’s MultiActive Toner spray all over your neck and face. Before the toner absorbs into your skin, apply your moisturizer

immediately after. Your skin will retain moisture better. Even if you don’t believe in toner, it’s great for refreshing the skin throughout the day. If your skin is prone to dry patches in colder weather, replace your light-weight moisturizer with something thicker like Korres Greek Yoghurt Moisturizing Face Cream. Greek yoghurt, an ancient healing remedy, provides instant healing and hydration. It feels amazing on the skin! If you want to wear a statement lip this season, you need to give your lips some extra TLC. For the ultimate treatment, you will love Hourglass No. 28 Lip Treatment Oil. It is a highly concentrated, rich blend of vitamins and essential oils that conditions your lips,

strengthens the moisture barrier and improves the appearance of your lips. This will be an essential for cooler weather. Although the texture is thick and tacky, it feels unbelievable on the lips. Use it anytime of the day or as a treatment at night. Hold onto your summer tan a little longer by continuing to moisturize your body. Nothing speeds up peeling skin more than a lack of moisture. Use a rich body moisturizer like Korres Body Butter. They come in a variety of fruity and flowery scents, but if you prefer something clean and refreshing try Yoghurt. Now that your skin is looking and feeling great, go out in your cozy sweaters and enjoy the beautiful wonders of autumn!

THRIFT SHOP SAVINGS

THRIFT SHOP SAVINGS BY JENNA MATTHEWS

There has always been a stigma against thrift shopping. Some people think that shopping at used stores suggests that you are poor. Some people may think that the items are dirty because they do not know where the clothing came from. Slowly, this stigma has been lifting, and over the last five years thrift shopping has actually become fashionable. Just ask Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. In today’s economy, it is difficult to justify paying full price for most items. Finding a treasure in a thrift shop is a wonderful feeling we can all relate to. Who doesn’t want to find a Guess handbag or Armani jacket for an unbelievable price? Here are some useful tips to make your next thrift shopping trip successful. SET A BUDGET AND STICK TO IT It is easy to get carried away when great items are priced under twenty dollars. Sticking to a predetermined budget can help you weed out those pesky impulse buys. GIVE YOURSELF LOTS OF TIME Don’t rush yourself. Finding that perfect outfit in a thrift shop, consignment shop, or used clothing store can sometimes feel like finding a needle in a haystack. Give yourself plenty of time to really dig around and look at as many items as possible. Make a day of it, and bring

64 | the stylish life magazine

along some friends and a sense of humour. TRY ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING ON If you see an outfit that is not technically your size, try it on anyway. It is possible that you may find a treasure. Even if something looks ridiculous on the rack or is not something you would normally wear, you may just find a gem, or next year’s Halloween costume. Thrift shop employees are used to customers trying on countless items. Be sure to hang everything back up and the sales associates will be happy to help you. You can turn the change room hallway into a catwalk with a few friends, and this can turn something as tedious as trying on clothes into a great time had by all. KEEP CHECKING BACK Inventory is ever changing, and many of the larger thrift stores have sale days. Catching one of these sales can save you up to 80% on already low priced items. WASH EVERYTHING The items you buy may still have the original tags on them, but it is recommended to wash everything as soon as you get home. The old stigma still holds true, you do not know where the clothing came from. Don’t let this stop you from shopping at thrift stores, just make sure that items are clean before wearing them. Thrift shopping may not be as glamorous as walking into a Gucci store and dropping thousands of dollars, but finding great deals on many items beats being broke every time you go shopping. So cop it, wash it, and go get some compliments!

SUGAR CHRONICLES

SUGAR:

CHRONICLES OF AN ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP BY: DALE FRASER

I love pastry. I love to bake them, I love watching them puff up in the oven and pulling them from the oven in anticipation. Most of all I love to eat them, all of them. For years and years the main staples in my diet were sugar and carbs. I have always operated under the (ridiculous) assumption that I wasn’t fat so I was healthy. Waking up feeling as though I was wading through wet cement with a cloudy mind was normal to me. The difference between refined sugar and naturally occurring sugar is that natural sugars are things like fructose (in fruit), lactose (in milk), honey and maple syrup while refined sugars are white, brown or powdered sugar and corn syrup. In short refined sugars are natural sugars that have been tampered

72 | the stylish life magazine

with, man-made if you will. Jacked up and genetically enhanced, bleached and manipulated. So in the body they show up as extremely condensed versions of natural sugars. This combined with the staggering amounts we consume, we really are not made aware of the dangers of our choices. A FEW EXAMPLES: SUGAR INCREASES ACIDITY LEVELS IN THE BODY High acidity levels in the human body create unhealthy conditions and inhibit its ability to heal, detoxify and absorb nutrients. These conditions play a perfect host for degenerative diseases such as fatigue, cavities and even cancer. SUGAR ENCOURAGES STRESS Sugar inhibits the adrenal glands in the production of essential anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory hormones. One of which is cortisol, essential in assisting the body’s response to stress, both physical and emotional. Adrenal fatigue sets in causing acne, insomnia, irritability and even depression. SUGAR IS HIGHLY ADDICTIVE According to an independent study conducted by www.plosone.org sugar surpasses cocaine in the satisfaction it produces in the brain. Sweet treats trigger a surge of

dopamine, a hormone that activates the brain’s pleasure center. Even in those addicted to cocaine, the “reward” from intense sweetness was greater than that of the cocaine. Pretty scary stuff and the list just goes on. The neurological aspects sounded familiar to me, the exhaustion, irritability and depression. It had never occurred to me that it might be the things I was putting into my body, or perhaps I was merely in denial. This is the nature of addiction. We can always find an excuse to justify the application of that which we are addicted to and sugar, my friends is nothing more than an addiction.

social consciousness that is not always conducive to high profit margins. Thus, you find refined sugars everywhere. Don’t be fooled by sugar alternatives either as anything designed in a laboratory to replace something we can’t find in nature is not entering my body.

A WORD ON SUGAR ALTERNATIVES In quest to find alternate ways to sweeten the things I love, I tried them all: agave, maple syrup, coconut palm sugar, brown rice syrup, honey. Ultimately I have come to rely on only two. Honey on/in everything and maple syrup for things like baked goods and pancakes. Agave has come under much scrutiny lately as it is not a renewable In January I decided to remove refined crop and seems to have little in the way sugars from my diet. Sound crazy? NUTRITION TIPS

TOP 5 NUTRITION TIPS FOR WOMEN BY MARIO RIGBY

Eating healthy can help reduce premenstrual syndrome (PMS), boost fertility, fight stress, make pregnancy and nursing easier, and ease symptoms of menopause. Osteoporosis and a decrease of bone density happens around the time of menopause. Peak bone density happens between the ages of 25 – 30 for the average woman. We all have different needs and here are some tips on nutrition specifically for women.

CALCIUM DEFICIENCY Women are at high risk of developing osteoporosis, so it is important to get plenty of calcium to support your bone health. Milk is no longer considered to be a great supporter of bone density. Dairy products are high in calcium, however their animal fat and protein can accelerate bone loss. Plant-based sources of calcium like beans, broccoli, kale, Brussels sprouts, and collard greens should also be included as part of your nutritional needs. Another way to increase bone density, of course, is through regular strength training.

PROTEIN UPTAKE Protein is an essential part of any healthy diet, but eating too much animal-based protein such as the levels recommended in many low-carb, high-protein diets is dangerous for women. Eating lots of protein causes

calcium loss, and over time, this could lead to a decrease in bone density and osteoporosis. Again, portion your meals with mostly green vegetables, fruits and legumes as they promote healthy nutritional aid for your body.

EAT WHOLE FOODS Fill most of your plate with fruits and green vegetables. Also include a variety of whole grains and beans to give you fiber and keep you going throughout the day. Legumes are an excellent source of slow-burning, gluten-free carbs, vegetarian protein and high fibre. Avoid processed food and try to buy those that are locally grown. A good way to find fresh food at the grocery store is to walk the perimeters of the store, because the middle aisles are usually populated with processed foods.

ALCOHOL AND CAFFEINE Alcohol and caffeine can have major

adverse effects on people. Women who have more than two alcoholic beverages a day can increase their risk to osteoporosis. Caffeine consumption interferes with hormone levels and also increases the loss of calcium. Try to limit alcohol consumption to one glass a day and caffeine to one cup a day. Now you have more reason to reduce your alcohol consumption when going out.

IRON DEFICIENCY A majority of women (especially fit or athletic women) do not get enough iron in their diet. In fact, a lot of it is lost during menstrual cycles. Increase your intake of iron by eating iron-rich foods such as lean red meat, dark poultry, lentils, spinach, almonds, and ironfortified cereals. The adverse effects of iron deficiency can leave you fatigued, and dizzy. It is also possible that other symptoms may occur.
