nearby attractions such as The Dallas World Aquarium, the Dallas Museum of Art, or the One Arts Plaza. A full list of the top ten attractions near the hotel can be found online at www.thejouledallas. com/area-guide. The concierge at the hotel can assist hotel guests in arranging various tours and obtaining theatre tickets. For a relaxing poolside experience you can spend the day enjoying the view from the hotel pool. Designed by Adam D. Tihany, the pool at The Joule features a glass front situated eight feet from the hotel’s structure. This gives swimmers the illusion that they are swimming off the edge of the building. The heated pool allows guests to relax while enjoying a priceless view. If you’re looking to get pampered, the ESPA at the Joule is the hotel’s spa. Extended over two floors the spa is equipped with a 320 square foot unisex vitality pool, sauna, ice fountain, separate gender European heat experiences with crystal steam rooms, and an experience shower. To top it off, the spa offers pre and post treatment relaxation areas. Guests can spend their days getting lost in the ultimate relaxation experience of both body and mind. On Fridays and Saturdays at 2:30PM, guests can enjoy champagne afternoon tea service at the TASCHEN Library, the hotel’s library and bookstore open for guests and outsiders who appreciate endless literature. In the evening guests can enjoy classic and contemporary cocktails at the Midnight Rambler, the Joule’s cocktail lounge. Furnished with vintage and custom pieces, the Midnight Rambler creates a very urban and chic vibe. The lounge is open daily from 5 PM to 2 AM, offering guests a wide selection of drinks and appetizers. The newly renovated Joule Hotel provides a luxurious experience from start to finish, from the 300 thread count sheets, 47” HDTV and Apple TVs, to their various hotel amenities including the rooftop garden terrace, a luxury spa by ESPA, a glass rooftop pool, and the three meal a day CBD Provisions restaurant. hile visiting the beautiful city of Montréal, I had a privilege to sit

down with photographer Anthony Turano, to catch up, kick back

WHEN DID YOU START SHOOTING? WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO GET INTO PHOTOGRAPHY?

WHAT NEW PROJECTS HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING ON LATELY?

I started shooting in 2002 and at the time it was just

I’m always working on fashion editorials for magazines,

another artistic outlet for me. I used to also draw, paint

but as of late I’ve been working along with Blush Lingerie

and sculpt. When it came time to decide on a long-

love with it.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? I had many small jobs with start-up clients at the beginning, and like many starting out I shot pretty much anything, food, products, etc. I shot everything except weddings, as I knew early on that I had no interest in that. My first paying job for a company was actually shooting all the new stores for Parasuco. They had just re-designed all their stores at the time.

IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT MAKES FOR A GOOD MODEL? A GOOD CLIENT? Contrary to what many people may think, all models are different not only in appearance but in personality. I like models that are fun to work with, don’t take themselves too seriously, but can also be serious and professional when need be. As a model you have to be able to work with people you just met and sometimes spend an entire working day with them, or more of it’s a repeat client.

Clients vary on industry and level of client also. Larger clients like Aldo, Dynamite, or The Hudsons Bay are clients that have been around the block and know the ins and outs of photo shoots, what the costs are and what it takes to achieve quality. Usually start-ups are a bit more insecure and need more guidance through the process. A good client will hire you based on your style and experience and trust it. The ideal client is well prepared. Everyone should know what they are doing. CLIENT: THE ROOM FOR THE HUDSON’S BAY MODEL: MEGHAN COLLISON @ NEXT NEW YORK MAKEUP & HAIR: DAVID ALLAN JONES

HOW HAS THE INDUSTRY CHANGED SINCE YOU’VE STARTED WORKING? When I started, the industry was at the cusp of transitioning to digital. There were not as many people in photography like today. The huge growth in photographers due to the accessibility of digital photography has only hurt the industry a little. These young photographers came into the industry very fast and also very talented, however with very little industry experience. Not knowing what to charge and excited to get the ball rolling, they have slowly lowered the overall budgets that photographers were given back in the day.

WHAT IMPROVEMENTS WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE WITHIN THE INDUSTRY? I would love to see some sort of a union or organization that would control what people in this industry are paid. For models, they have their agencies that fight for them. But very few photographers are in, or want to be in agencies, as the percentages they take are much more money

say what certain services are worth. So I would love to see something like that in place.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACCOMPLISH IN YOUR CAREER? At this point in my career I have been mostly editorial. Right now I am working more on building the commercial side of my portfolio to attract a different clientele.

WHO WOULD YOU LOVE TO WORK WITH? That’s a tough one. There are so many amazing people I would love to work with and some that I already have. If I had to choose one it would have to be Adriana Lima.

WHERE HAVE YOU SHOT BEFORE AND WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO WORK? I normally shoot between Montreal, Toronto, New York and Miami. Each has their own amazing vibes. New York is by far my favorite for anything urban looking, and Miami for anything outdoors. The most beautiful place I have ever shot would have to be Aruba.

TELL ME YOUR HIGHEST ACHIEVEMENT TO DATE? For me my greatest achievement so far is “The Stocking Project.” It means a lot to me and I’m glad how well it’s going so far and hope that I can raise a lot of money and awareness for the cause.

GINGER BLACKBERRY SMASH Serves 1

• 1 cup sugar • 1 4-inch (10-cm) piece fresh ginger, peeled and sliced • 2 teaspoons coarse salt • 1 teaspoon ground ginger • 1 lime wedge • Ice cubes • ¼ cup silver tequila • 1 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice • 3 fresh blackberries • 1 thin slice crystallized ginger In a small saucepan, combine the sugar and fresh ginger with 1 cup of water. Use the lime wedge to moisten the rim of a glass and dip it lightly into the ginger and salt mixture. In a shaker filled with ice, add the tequila, 1-ounce of the gingerflavored simple syrup, and the lime juice, and shake until chilled. another person and being owned. We can (temporarily)

push away our fears of being abandoned with a symbol of ownership, whether it is a ring, tattoo, or even a chastity belt (for the kinksters out there). Despite my distaste for

LEISURE

T

here’s something undeniably sexy about “owning”

marriage and monogamy, I understand the impulse to cling to our significant other for assurance that we are worthy of being loved, that we are needed, that we are inseparable. Even the language we use implies that we own our loved ones. “Be mine” “I’m yours”. As if, somehow, by owning them, we can’t lose them. As if they are one with us. I struggle with this language because I shy away from labels that restrict me, that box me into an expected role. I don’t like being “his girlfriend». It›s comforting for a period of time, and then I start to worry that some sort of transgression will occur beyond the imposed limits of «boyfriend» or «girlfriend» and everything will fall apart. Better not to have any labels at all, so my partner and I can make our own rules, free from societal constraints. Ownership in relationships is taken to an extreme for people who fetishize chastity belts. To people who aren’t familiar with this kink, it sounds absolutely terrifying; reminiscent of medieval devices used to prevent masturbation or infidelity. Little did I know, chastity belts are used in the kink world by people who are so turned on by ownership dynamics that they want their genitals to be completely under someone else’s control. There are varying degrees of this practice, of course, and my experience with it has been fairly informal but very rewarding. I absolutely love taking control of a man›s orgasms. What better way is there to impose control than to take over his ability to touch his own dick? This kink, more than any other, is the perfect physical manifestation of a previously repressed desire to own someone so completely that they literally can’t derive pleasure without me. To have a man begging me for release, to watch him grovel, what more could my ego ask for?! Knowing that he wants to be owned by me, that he trusts me with the key to his cock, that is a heady feeling.

Add the ginger, chile, and cilantro to the wrung-out zucchini. Sprinkle the chickpea flour over it all. Stir to mix very well. Form into tablespoon-size balls. Heat 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm) of oil in a skillet or wok for frying. When the oil is hot, lower in a few of the zucchini balls. Fry 2 to 3 minutes, turning at least once, so they turn golden brown all over. Remove with a slotted spoon to drain on paper towels. HAS ANYONE SEEN SARAH COLONNA’S PANTS? BY YAEL GOTTESMAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAVID ZAUGH

W

ell known as a popular roundtable regular on the hit late night talk show ‘Chelsea Lately’, Sarah a stand

up comedian tours across the country while also appearing on numerous TV shows. She decided to take her humour and life journeys to paper, titled ‘Life as I Blow it’. A wickedly funny memoir about love, life, and pursuing her dreams. Her latest book titled ‘Has Anyone Seen My Pants?’, is a hilarious, yet honest look at life in her late thirties. A laugh-out-loud trip around America with Sarah as she braves mother-daughter road trips, a fling-gone-wrong, and single -shaming resorts. Sarah’s wit and sharp observations take the reader on an unforgettable journey. Sarah took time out of her busy schedule to sit down and answer a few questions about her latest book.

WHAT INSPIRED THE TITLE “HAS ANYONE SEEN MY PANTS?” I like having fun. I felt like this title sums up how I felt most of my thirties. Sometimes I was actually pant-less, sometimes I felt like I needed to find my “big girl” pants. I think I also just like ridiculous titles.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY OF YOUR THIRTIES? This may sound really odd, but it’s probably taking a road trip with my mom to see a Luke Bryan concert. It was during a time when I was pretty depressed and the last thing I wanted to do was take a road trip to Tulsa with my mom. But it turned out to be so incredibly fun and it shook me out of a bad pattern I was in. I hope this sounds mysterious enough to make people want to read about it!

WHAT MAKES “HAS ANYONE SEEN MY PANTS?” DIFFERENT FROM YOUR PREVIOUS BOOK? I’m very proud of my first book, but I learned a lot from writing it. My first book covered so many years of my life, that looking back I’m not sure all the emotional connection was always there for me. This one is about the last few years, so the stories are more raw to me and I feel like the humor and the emotions really come through to the reader.

72

|T H E

S T Y L I S H

L I F E

M A G A Z I N E

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE DESTINATION THAT YOU HAVE VISITED AND WHY? Cabo! Always Cabo. I love it there. It’s an easy trip from Los Angeles and it’s always nice and sunny. It’s my favorite place to relax and to write.

WHAT DID YOU LOVE ABOUT BEING ON CHELSEA LATELY? I loved being on “Chelsea Lately.” It was the perfect combination of getting to write for myself when I was on the panel, getting to do ridiculous sketches, and getting to write for Chelsea Handler. Plus, it was my first full time writing job so I’m pretty grateful for it!

WHAT CAN READERS EXPECT FROM YOUR BOOK? A lot of laughs, silliness, and a lot of heart. Some stories are purely funny, and some are a little more emotional, which I think might surprise people...in a good way.

WHAT IS NEXT FOR YOU? Anything on the horizon? I’m going on tour with my book so I’ll be doing stand-up all over the country every week for about three months, I taped a stand-up special in November that should be out soon and I’m working on an idea to turn the book into a TV show. Fingers crossed!

The Deal on Bronzer BY BRITTANY GRAY OF FANCY FACE INC

So many women have a love/hate relationship

Decide exactly what it is that you want

the bronzer to do. Do you want it to contour your skin or do you want it to give you a sun kissed glow? This will really alter the type of product you purchase. Some women want the bronzer to provide structure to the face. With this being said, you will want to apply your bronzer with a more controlled/smaller brush. For the woman who wants more of a sun kissed glow all over, use a larger fluffy brush to cover more surface area of the face.

that your face is more chiseled than it really

However, when used properly, bronzer is an amazing makeup item. It is the product that gives celebrities their chiseled cheek bones and can give you a sun-kissed glow, making your face look five to ten pounds thinner. In order to select the correct bronzer for you, here top 10 tips for joining the bronzer bandwagon and making it your new beauty best friend:

1)

Pick a bronzer that is only two shades

If you have oily skin, stick to powdered

8)

Do not be afraid to contour your nose.

Apply bronzer with a domed fluffy eyeshadow brush to the sides and the very tip of your nose to make it appear slimmer and shorter in step altogether.

9)

Applying bronzer along your hairline

and on the high point of your forehead and temples will make your forehead look smaller.

If lost, apply bronzer to all areas of the

The Power of Mindful Healing BY JENNIFER STEELE

In the heart of Yorkville, diagonal to the Four

laying in a cozy pod while sensing acoustic

When I walked into Soul 7 for the first time, I felt an immediate sense of tranquility. Not only are the staff extremely welcoming and easy to talk to, but the aura in the clinic is soothing, making it easy to leave your worries and woes at the door. Bob Berman, Founder and Creator of Soul 7, will greet you with a big smile and hug as though you’re part of the family. He will then assess your areas of concern, and creates a unique program to suit your needs. The goal here is to apply therapies for the betterment of your mind, body and soul, so that you can then eliminate pain and suffering through self-healing. This type of therapy is non-invasive and drug-free, which may be a fresh unique concept for many. Below are the healing technologies I experienced at Soul 7 during my program: • The Ondamed - a German technology which performs a bio-feedback scan in order to provide personalized protocols for your healing plan. • PEMF (Pulsed Electro Magnetic Field) Therapy - already widely applied across Europe, uses varying frequencies tailored to your problem areas in order to help your body rebalance cellular functioning.

vibrations that communicate with the central nervous system. • Sound and Light therapy - music, guided visualizations, and shifting geometrical imagery are used in order to provide a deep sensory experience. The therapies used at Soul 7 are a true delight for those with an open mind and willingness to try something different. Bob and the team can give you the tools you need for alternative healing, and stress elimination. After leaving each of my appointments, I felt well balanced and deeply relaxed. Although new, this centre is becoming a well known health haven for local Torontonians and visitors. Soul7 also offers a cancer support program which is designed to support patients undergoing any type of treatment. Any Soul 7 client can refer someone they know going through cancer or in remission to the 10 week cancer support program, free of charge. For location and contact information, visit www. Soul7.ca
