HODA REAL EXPERIENCE, REAL PEOPLE

A JEWELRY DREAM BY EMILY KLINE oda Menshari needed to do something creative with her hands. She has always been fascinated with body jewelry and the idea that you could literally create clothing with jewelry.

H

Hoda started experimenting by using one piece of jewelry and wearing it several different ways. It changed her perception. “Jewelry was now something that was practical and fun”, states Menshari. The versatility of a piece is the whole idea behind her brand, Hoda.

LEISURE Menshari believes Hoda Designs is the future of accessories. She goes on to say, “I like to think that in a few years women will demand more functional accessories that can help save time and simplify their lives. They can invest in one piece that can take them from day to night and offer something more, like a 2-in-1 necklace that is reversible, a USB pendant that stores their office data, or a monochromatic pencil crayon collar that doubles as a writing utensil.” Inspiration for her line comes from the materials she uses. She favours leather and chains. “I was in awe of this vintage brass chain that had speckles of reflective brass in it and resembled a yellow brick road. It was such a beautiful, unique piece that I decided to do a whole collection around it.” says Menshari. She also gets inspired when she sees people wearing her designs. “It is probably the most rewarding part of my job and keeps me motivated”. If you like taking risks, making a statement and are bored of the traditional accessories in the market, check out Hoda’s latest collection called ‘ Industrial Elegance’. The collection captures the raw and elegant essence of the brand. It includes coloured leather, monochromatic crystal fringe collars and bright synthetic suede collars. Her designs are available for purchase at hodadesigns.com. You can also find Hoda’s pieces in Toronto at Made You Look, Model Citizen, 69 Vintage and Shop The Patron Saint. If you are looking for something new and modern to replace your traditional purse, check out Hoda’s twin sister brand Potrol. A new line of kickass gun harnesses that make you want to ditch your daily purse.

GO NUDE BY JENNIFER STEELE

BEAUTY

An inspirational cosmetic line that’s turning faces.

At first glance, Jenny and her two daughters, Taylor and Ally, seem like your average family – fun loving, talkative, approachable, and down to earth. But when they presented their new makeup line, NUDESTIX, to a group of us at Terroni near Summer Hill in Toronto just before the holiday season, it was clear this family had something special. The girls, only 18 and 15 years of age, are mature beyond their years with a strong

entrepreneurial spirit. Their mother, a chemical engineer, has over 20 years of beauty experience. This is all very impressive, to say the least. NUDESTIX’s mantra “go nude but better” is based on a simple set of easy-to-use makeup crayons that cover all bases for a fresh-faced, nude look. Even though the girls are young, this line was created for and used by all ages.

56

|T H E

S T Y L I S H

L I F E

M A G A Z I N E

BEAUTY Each multipurpose NUDESTIX is loaded with just enough color to get the job done and leave you glowing. The idea behind this line is that beauty trends are changing. The caked-on-face is a dated concept, no longer appealing to the new generation of beauty buyers. Now it’s all about a slightly enhanced, natural ‘no makeup lifestyle’, and what Taylor refers to as ‘effortless beauty’. Not only is this product on trend, but the concept works well for women who have busy lives and simply don’t have the time to create a work of art each morning. With the mandate that doing makeup should be easy, they’ve established four simple solutions for face, eyes, lips and nails. Everything is portable, easy to use, and does not require the use of brushes. Comparable to a Kylie and Kendal Jenner dynamic, these girls stand in a position of influential power. With a rising social media platform, and backed by a morally sound mother, they are able to help a new generation discover their potential, while reinforcing the importance of uniqueness and natural beauty. This is a true labour of love. Editor’s Picks: • Lip + Cheek Pencil in “Soul” – this smooth Vitamin E and Shea butter formula gives the face a healthy complexion. • Magnetic Eye Colour in “Gilt” – highlights and brightens the eye area, giving a shimmery, glamorous glow. Each stick retails at $24 USD or $28 CAD, and can be found at Sephora and Urban Outfitters. T H E S T Y L I S H L I F E M A G A Z I N E |

the highest speed.

Blend for at least 1 minute, until a creamy consistency. Pour into a serving bowl and set aside. To make the pumpkin seeds, heat the oil in a heavy skillet over medium heat. When the oil is hot, add the pumpkin seeds and sauté for about 2 minutes, taking care that they do not burn. The seeds will begin to puff up and pop. Once they appear toasted, immediately pour them into a bowl. Toss with the cayenne and salt and set aside.

INGREDIENTS: Pumpkin Seeds • • • • 2 teaspoons vegetable oil 1/3 cup raw hulled pumpkin seeds 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt

INGREDIENTS: Filling • • • • • • • • • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 3/4 cup finely chopped yellow onion 1 clove garlic, minced 3 cups 1/2-inch-diced butternut squash 1 teaspoon chile powder 2 teaspoons kosher salt 4 cups finely chopped kale Corn tortillas, warmed Chopped white onion, chopped fresh cilantro, and salsa of choice, for serving (optional)

To make the filling, heat the oil in a large, heavy skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and sauté for about 3 minutes, until softened. Add the garlic and sauté for about 1 minute more. Add the squash and sauté for 6 to 7 minutes, just until the squash begins to soften. Season with the chile powder and salt. Add the kale and cook, stirring, for about 1 minute, until it begins to wilt. Remove from the heat, taste, and adjust the seasoning with salt if needed. Serve with the tortillas, crema, pumpkin seeds, onion, cilantro, and salsa. To assemble each taco, invite guests to spoon about 1/2 cup of the warm filling into a tortilla and top with some crema and pumpkin seeds. If guests want more toppings, they can finish off their tacos with onion, cilantro, and salsa

INSTRUCTIONS To make the crema, soak the raw cashews in room-temperature water to cover for at least 1 hour. Drain and reserve. Toast the cumin in a small, dry, heavy skillet over medium heat for about 1 minute, until fragrant. Transfer to a spice grinder, let cool, and grind finely. ROASTED TOMATO MINT SALSA Makes about 21/2 cups INGREDIENTS: • • • • • • • 6 small Roma tomatoes, halved lengthwise 1/2 large yellow onion, sliced into 1/2-inch-thick rounds 1 small jalapeño chile, Stemmed 1/4 cup rice vinegar 1/4 cup packed chopped fresh cilantro 2 tablespoons packed chopped fresh mint 1 tablespoon kosher salt

FOOD

INSTRUCTIONS Position a rack on the top level of the oven, about 4 inches from the broiler. Turn on the broiler. Line a rimmed baking sheet with aluminum foil. Place the tomato halves, cut side down; the onion slices; and the chile on the prepared baking sheet and broil for about 10 to 12 minutes, or until the vegetables are soft and a bit charred. Let cool to room temperature. In a food processor, combine the roasted vegetables and any juices from the pan with the vinegar, cilantro, mint, and salt and pulse until the mixture is almost, but not quite, smooth. If necessary, add up to 1/4 cup water to achieve a consistency similar to that of a thick soup. Taste and adjust the seasoning as necessary. Serve now or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

FASHION WITH A CAUSE BY SHADI BAS

FASHION

Handbags are the most important accessory one can have, not only do they make a fashion statement, but they are also a reflection of self. Angela and Roi understand that such handbags are not always affordable, and so when they created ‘Angela & Roi' they decided to produce a line of products which fused quality and affordability with a classic design. Angela’s deep interest fashion sparked from an early age, her love for luxury handbags was cultivated by her mother. Throughout the years Angela learned the depths of being fashionable. During college, Angela learned what every college student struggles with; that luxury items and high quality bags are not affordable for students. She began to wonder why luxury can’t be affordable. When she met Roi, a businessman with an eye for talent, the two decided to change the handbag industry. They started their company ‘Angela & Roi’ with their core mission to use their product sales to support health issues. Angela & Roi’s mission to donate by colour was inspired when the pair attended a fashion show that supported AIDS with the red ribbon. Today ‘Angela & Roi’ features a line of handbags supporting 11 different causes and working with 11 non-profit organizations. Customers can visit www.angelaroi.com to purchase their products online or visit ShopEthica, and modavanti.com for international purchases. For an in person look of the product line, customers can visit any of the ‘Angela & Roi’ pop-up stores located in New York, Brooklyn, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Atlanta, High Point, and San Francisco. With plans to expand their products to wallets, wristlets, and various bracelet options, all while supporting health issues, ’Angela & Roi’ bring a whole new meaning to the saying “fashion with a cause”.

All for Forgiveness BY JENNIFER STEELE

D

uring the holiday season I came across a book called “Everyone Needs to Forgive Somebody”, by Allan R. Hunt. I was particularly

LEISURE

interested in this title due to some events that had taken place in my own life over the past year, so I figured I’d give it a go. A quick read, but nonetheless very powerful and impactful. The truth is that we all have someone from our past that has upset us or caused us pain in some way. Whether it be an ex boyfriend, girlfriend, family member or friend, someone has hurt us profoundly, oftentimes making us bitter to the core. At first it actually feels good to despise that person, punish them and dismiss them altogether. But we know all too well that this leads nowhere. Only a dead end is what you’ll find on a road of grief and resentment. And that’s because of the simple law of attraction: negativity breeds more negativity. But what, I thought, are we supposed to do? Condone bad behaviour? Forgiveness is often confused for excusing someone’s wrongdoings. What I’ve come to realize is that it isn’t that at all. Quite the contrary, forgiveness brings with it power of freedom in allowing you to keep the past in the past, and live for a fresh new present. This idea is conveyed perfectly in a quote I’ve jotted down from the book listed above: “Once found, forgiveness frees. It liberates you from feverishly keeping score and remembering wrongs. It propels you into a new, higher way of life. A life of grace. A life of second chances. A life of seeing the possibilities for people and yourself rather than being debilitated in a swampy muck of what has been.” What really helped me was the realization of how strong empathy connects to forgiving someone. Empathy is the ability to understand another, and when it boils down to it, we often are more alike one another than different – even those who we seemingly cannot stand. If we take a moment to put ourselves in that person’s shoes, we may get an idea of “why” he said the things he said and “why” she did the things she did. This is a really hard concept to grasp at first, but once you do, you’ll find it so incredibly liberating. When you understand that we all have the same basic needs in life, and are all acting in our own ways to attain them, you will soon realize we are more similar to all those around us, even the people who have hurt us. The same goes for forgiving yourself, and may actually be the hardest pinnacle to reach. All I can say is that you’re doing an injustice to yourself and to your loved ones when you brood over mistakes and hold yourself in contempt. Basking in the past is only keeping you there, and preventing you from being your best version of your future self. There’s no better time than the present to free yourself and re-examine your mindset, by moving forward in a positive light.

them out, but let’s face it, most of us have not. For many the question is, how do we manage and tame these things we call “eyebrows”?

Here are my main tips for those who have bushy brows, non-existent/over plucked brows, fair brows, dark brows, and sparse brows.

way or absolutely destroy your overall beauty look. Some women have figured

L I F E

BEAUTY

1) Leave them in the hands of a professional. With that being said, do not wax! Waxing is an abrasive thing to do around the eyes, especially since the skin around our eyes is drastically thinner than anywhere else on the face. The repetitive waxing begins to break down collagen around the eyes, which can unfortunately cause sagging. The best way to remove hairs and shape your brows into two structured goddesses is to go to a professional that threads, tweezes and trims, all in one service.

2) When going to a professional, grow out your brows as much as you can handle and perhaps bring an image of a person who has your dream brows. Now, be realistic. We all can’t have Brooke Shields’ brows. Find inspiration from someone that has an achievable shape for you.

3) Air on the side of a thicker shape. Do not over-thread or over-tweeze. The last thing you want to do is remove too many hairs and have them not grow back. The older you get -the more you will cherish each and every brow hair that is still remaining.

4) For those of you who have brows that have been abused in the past, try using a lash growth serum like Rapid Lash on the brows. Apply before bed every night and watch your brows thicken up before your eyes. Some claim that caster oil works in the same way too.

5) Now that your brows are on their way to becoming your dream shape, we need the right makeup products to make them look like show-stoppers every day. Here are my favorite products for brows: • Annastasia Brow Wiz pencils • Tarte Amazon Clay Waterproof Brow Mousse (Extremely Long Lasting!) • Annastasia Brow Powder Duo • An angled brow/eyeliner brush (Comes in the Tarte Brow Mousse kit) • MAC brow mascara 6) If you have blonde hair, apply a colour that is 1-2 shades darker than your hair. If you have medium brown to dark brown hair or black hair, apply a shade that is 1-2 tones lighter than your hair colour. Most of us should be using brow shades that are ashier in tone than warm in tone unless you have strawberry blonde hair or red hair. In that case, pick a shade that isn’t quite as warm as your hair colour. For the actual product application, I like to apply a thin-tipped eyebrow pencil first to define the outskirts of the brows and fill in any gaps in the hair growth. After that, fill the brows using your favourite brow powder with an angle brush. The brow powder really softens the look of the pencil. Once complete, set the brows with a brow specific mascara sweeping the wand in an upwards motion. If your brows tend to disappear over the course of the day, something like the Tarte waterproof mousse should be your go-to product. Following all the tips above will certainly help you to achieve some serious brow envy! Good luck on your search for perfect brows. Remember, brows are sisters, not twins.
