PROFESSIONAL PROFILE CHERYL GUSHUE MAKEUP ARTIST Cheryl Gushue is an award winning North American makeup artist and global educator to beauty professionals. Cheryl started her career as a fashion designer and custom couturier then shifted her artistic skills to the beauty industry. After many years of cosmetic retailing and working in salons, she turned her talents to freelance and broadened her horizons to all types of beauty and fashion related work. For over 15 years, Cheryl’s talents of makeup artistry and head to toe fashion makeovers were frequently featured on Canadian television makeover shows Cityline, So Chic and Steven & Chris where she spoke about “Ageless Beauty”. In 2015 she won the prestigious industry award of Canadian Makeup Artist of the Year. KEITH RAHZI CLOUSTON PHOTOGRAPHER Keith Rahzi Clouston started his photography career in Central London, where he was based for 15 years. At the end of 2014, he relocated to Singapore (where he was born and raised). His first fashion editorial was published in January 2006. Since then, he has focused on beauty and fashion photography; both in studio and on location. Keith is currently available internationally for commissioned work and paid editorials.

SHAWNNA DOWNING MAKEUP ARTIST With a definite passion for living a creative life, Shawnna Downing is an artist whoʼs not afraid of being unconventional and dancing to the beat of her own drum. As a makeup & hair director, she trusts her inner artist and the spontaneity of creating on set. This artist, writer, sometimes a poet has launched a project called FuckTheHow under her company Artists4Artists. Her brand is focused on starting a new conversation, one about believing in yourself, trusting life and creating a space that recognizes we donʼt always understand how or why things happen. She is much more than just a makeup & hair artist, sheʼs above all a lover of life, a supporter of creating, trusting oneself and being spontaneous. JAVI SALINAS PHOTOGRAPHER Javi was born on a hot summer day in Madrid, Spain, or at least that is what he’s been told. He discovered photography at early age while he was looking for new music, coming across photographs which inspired him. This ignited his passion for image making, eventually developing it into a career. Anna Halarewicz HOW DID YOU GET INTO ILLUSTRATION AND KNOW THAT IT WAS YOUR CALLING? I just knew that I wanted to paint, and the fact that I attended a math and science focused school did not interfere with my direction. Knowing that I wanted to paint for a living made things a lot easier. But its not easy to reach your goals, so you can't give up or take things personally. In university I painted mainly women, but I preferred illustration over abstract art. I've always loved the aesthetics of vintage fashion illustrations, especially from the 50's. My biggest breakthrough was seeing Alexander McQueens 2009 show, “The Horn of Plenty.” It is my obsession to this day, as is everything that he created, and I actually cried when he died. This year I came out with an album inspired and dedicated to McQueens “Horn of Plenty.”

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THIS CAREER AND WHERE DID YOU STUDY? My first illustration was published in 2007, and I was very emotional. I completed my studies in a Graphics College in Wroclaw, Poland, in 2008. After that I entered a few competitions and it snowballed from there. I work a lot, I'm not intimidated by tight deadlines and am very open minded to clients suggestions, I think that's the reason they come back to me so often. WHY FASHION, AND IS THERE ANOTHER AREA OF INTEREST YOU HAVE WHEN IT COMES TO ILLUSTRATION? Although I am a fashion illustrator, I'm very interested in analyzing the person who wears the clothing. One of my masters projects was titled “Personalization of Soul” or “A human in the perspective of death.” I feel this type of dark exploration bleeds through my work. Underneath beauty there is room to ask many questions regarding the human condition. Especially in my series “Gloomy Souls” or “Hunting for Ghost.” WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE TOOLS OR RAW MATERIALS TO USE? My absolute favourite materials are watercolour and ink. I've collected paintbrushes for years and I keep them all, even the most damaged, I've got an enormous collection. I've used watercolour for almost 15 years and I'm still discovering new possibilities. Since I finished graphics studies, my favourite techniques are those which do not need adjustments, but watercolour is a finicky medium, and so is ink. One wrong line and the drawing is ruined. I like that type of risk, it influences the dynamic in my work. HOW DID YOUR STYLE EVOLVE OVER THE YEARS? I think that my lines have become a lot cleaner and the execution more confident. By painting every day I'm making my hand the best possible tool, the paintbrush is just an extension of that. I also see an evolution of colour, my and palette becomes more narrow and refined.
WHAT WAS/IS YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE WORKING AS AN ILLUSTRATOR? Its quite a task to create “made to order” illustration and do it so smoothly as if you'd paint for yourself. Large projects can be daunting, especially when the client has a list of needs to be met. I am a perfectionist, and I will not send out my work unless I'm 100% happy with the results. Sometimes I redo it over and over, fixing just a small detail. Its a task to deliver on tight deadlines, especially under the hated term ASAP. HOW DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION? DO YOU HAVE ANY IDOLS IN THE INDUSTRY? I've never had a problem finding inspiration, only with lack of time to complete all the ideas I'd like to bring to life. I'm inspired by colour, structure, light. By being an illustrator of fashion, I'm delivered mood boards 2-4 times a year. I'm most inquisitive about the behind the scenes of fashion shows, not the final effect, but the chaos from which the beauty emerges. WHAT ARE YOUR ASPIRATIONS FOR THE FUTURE? ANY DREAM CLIENTS OR COLLABORATORS? Of course, I'd always like to see progress. To continue to be happy with my work and always look for new potential instead of things becoming routine. That's why I'm not afraid of change, I chase new things and experiment a lot. Dream clients? Global brands and campaigns. More publication features and international shows. WHAT OTHER PASSIONS DO YOU SHARE OTHER THAN YOUR WORK? Outside of my busy schedule I do not have a lot of free time on my hands. Once I finish my spec projects for clients I paint large canvases, just for myself. So its hard to call illustration my work, its a lot more, not just a job. Its passion. WHERE DO YOU FIND YOUR INSPIRATION? It may sound cliche, but it really is everywhere! I think the different interpretation of theme is unique to each designer. There are a few elements which the label always falls back on, and that is our DNA, deconstruction, reconstruction, asian, drapery and tailoring. H OW D I D YO U G E T I N TO DESIGNING? Growing up under the influence of my seamstress mother, I guess I knew I wanted to be a designer. Not in fashion, as I was really too young to know what fashion was. Being immersed in a creative environment, seeing how things are put together, from a piece of fabric and then transformed into a garment, shaped my foundations. I always wanted to do something creative growing up, but was never quite sure what it was. I tried multimedia when I was 18 years old, but that didn’t really work. My next interest was naturally, fashion.
I’m still working with my favourite fabrics, soft cotton rib knits, crepe, and cotton shirting. These are the parameters we set for ourselves and see how we can use the same fabrics in different ways, applying them on different/new garment types. W H AT WAS B E HIND YO UR R ED, W HIT E AND B LAC K C O LO U R C HO IC E S F O R “ T HO U S H A L L NOT ” ? The use of a monochromatic colour palette is present within each collection. We also like a pop of solid colour from time to time. The colour red, besides passion, represents defiance. We are not a conventional brand and I guess red naturally surfaced as a colour of choice to use for this season.
WHAT DOES THE REST OF 2016 HOLD FOR YOU? I’m currently working on the FW2016-17 collection, and focussing on our store in Singapore which we have just opened this year. B E A U T Y ILLUSTRATOR? I’m an illustrator/tech designer living in California. I went to school to study fine art and fashion design, and walked out with a portfolio full of intricately tailored collections and oil paintings and I decided to trade it all to become a programmer. Illustration is one way that I can still keep my foot in the door of the fashion world. HOW AND WHEN DID YOUR SUCCESS AND POPULARITY TAKE OFF? A few fashion editors liked and reposted my images early this summer, and from there it spiraled out of control! WHAT SETS YOU APART FROM OTHER ILLUSTRATORS AND HOW DO YOU COMPETE? I would never want to compete with another illustrator—that’s not the point. Illustration is an inherently unique way to present your vision to the world. No two artists would ever draw the same idea identically, and I think that’s beautiful. HOW DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN ILLUSTRATION TO BEGIN WITH? I grew up with a bit of a stutter, and was very insecure about speaking. Drawing became a way for me to communicate without the pressure of talking in a funny way. WHAT MADE YOU CONNECT FOOD WITH FASHION? There is a beauty in every shape in nature, from sweet peas to the hips of a

woman. It’s all from the same earth. Food is just an unexpected way to showcase the everyday into something surprising. HOW HAVE YOU BRANCHED OFF INTO OTHER AREAS OF FASHION OR ILLUSTRATION?. It all began with my education in traditional fashion design, where I developed couture sewing and fine tailoring techniques. My illustrations really branched off of the more technical renderings of the garments we did. WHO INSPIRES YOU AND ENCOURAGES YOU IN YOUR WORK? David Downton is an incredible artist—he can capture the essence of a woman in a handful of brush strokes. Richard Haines is always posting his drawings to Instagram as he works throughout the day, and that inspires me to draw in moments when I don’t feel like I have time. HAVE YOU WORKED WITH OR FOR ANYONE FAMOUS OR NOTEWORTHY? WHAT WAS THAT EXPERIENCE LIKE? Working with publications I read religiously growing up, like Bon Appetite and Harper’s Bazaar, was an incredible experience. The editors are so inspiring and supportive. WHAT DO YOU FIND MOST REWARDING ABOUT THIS WORK? I’m incredibly flattered to see such a positive reception to my drawings. It’s very humbling, and fuels me to share more with the world.

Olga Fonda is an American actress born in Russia. After being awarded the Presidential Scholarship Olga had the opportunity to finish her education and earn her degree free of cost in the United States. She began her modelling career in the US and was signed by Ford Models shortly after. With roles on big time series such as “Nip/Tuck” and “Vampire Diaries” Ogla has quickly risen to fame. Her current project has her starring in TNT’s new hit series “Agent X”. We had the chance to speak to Olga and get a peek at the on goings of the star’s lifestyle. DID YOU ALWAYS WANT TO BECOME AN ACTRESS? OR WAS THERE A PIVOTAL MOMENT WHEN YOU REALIZED THAT ACTING WAS WHAT YOU WANTED TO DO? Growing up I was always fascinated by the world of film and television. Who wouldn›t be? It›s so glamorous! It felt almost untouchable. It wasn›t until I moved to Los Angeles and started modeling, when I realized acting was a possibility. I quickly moved into the world of TV commercials and started doing small appearances on TV as well. I loved everything about it! And when I had a chance to do my first independent movie called, «Love Hurts» it confirmed my love for acting even more.

RIGHT NOW YOU PLAY A SECRET AGENT ON TV, HOW DO YOU LIKE THE ROLE? I have always wanted to do an action role. I watched Angelina Jolie kicking butt in Tomb Raider and I thought to myself, “This looks like so much fun!” I would love to do a role like that! So when I got the role of Olga Petrovka, I couldn’t be happier! SECRET AGENTS ARE USUALLY INVOLVED IN BOTH COVERT AND OVERT OPERATIONS. SOMETIMES THE THINGS THEY HAVE TO DO TO GET THE JOB DONE ARE A LITTLE ON THE UNETHICAL SIDE. WITH THIS IN MIND, WOULD YOU SAY THAT SECRET AGENTS ARE HEROES OR VILLAINS? OR DO THEY PERHAPS FALL SOMEWHERE IN THE MIDDLE? I would consider secret agents to be heroes unless they are corrupt. If they are only serving themselves, then they are
DO YOU HAVE A DREAM ROLE? IF SO, WHAT IS IT? I haven›t been acting for very long so I consider every role a gift. There are endless opportunities to be able to play different characters in different genres. I would love to play a real life hero (in a biopic). To tell their story and be able to step into their shoes would be a fun challenge. Also, I always wanted to play a Bond girl! SOMETIMES THERE ARE MOVIES OR SHOWS THAT IMPACT OUR LIVES, MAKE US QUESTION WHAT WE KNOW, OR HELP SHAPE OUR IDEOLOGIES AND VALUES. IS THERE A MOVIE OR TV SHOW THAT HAS HAD SUCH AN IMPACT ON YOU? IF SO, WHAT IS IT? A few of my favorite movies with meaningful messages are The Bucket List, Rocky, and Pursuit of Happiness. The Bucket List – To find the joy and share with others.
DO YOU HAVE A HERO? SOMEONE YOU LOOK UP TO AND WHO HAS BEEN AN INSPIRATION FOR YOU? My parents have been my heroes! I›m so grateful for them. They have taught me to be strong, independent, determined, and hardworking. They also taught me to be kind and honest. To never give up my dreams and always stay true to myself. I am who I am today, because of them. I couldn›t wish for better heroes in my life.

I had a great time when I was competing, but that was years ago! Now I only dance in the privacy of my home. Haha! Usually when I am cleaning up. But to be honest, I do miss it sometimes. IT›S ALWAYS IMPORTANT TO MAINTAIN A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE WHICH IS USUALLY A COMBINATION OF EXERCISE AND EATING THE RIGHT FOODS. DO YOU HAVE A PARTICULAR DIET AND WORKOUT ROUTINE? I wouldn›t say I am dieting, instead I strive to live a healthy lifestyle. I eat everything in balance and work out at least three times a week. If I have a chance to hike and do some outside activities in between, it›s a plus. It›s all about a healthy balance. Healthy body equals healthy mind! WE LIVE IN A SOCIETY WHICH ENCOURAGES US TO BE CAREER FOCUSED, TO WORK HARD, TO ACHIEVE THE AMERICAN DREAM. HOWEVER, FOR OUR OWN SANITY AND HEALTH, IT’S CRITICAL THAT WE HAVE A PROPER WORK/LIFE BALANCE. HOW DO YOU FIND THE TIME TO RELAX AND DETACH AND ENJOY YOUR FAMILY? Life is all about a healthy balance. In order to be more productive you need to have the energy to do so. So whether you spend time with your family, friends, relax at the spa, or do something for yourself that you enjoy, it›s always good for you. It recharges your batteries. Then when you›re back to work, you have the energy to push even harder. DO YOU HAVE A DREAM VACATION DESTINATION? I love traveling! I would love to visit the Maldives. I heard it›s absolutely breathtaking! WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR CAREER DRIVEN WOMEN WHO ARE ASPIRING TO MAKE A NAME FOR THEMSELVES AND BE SUCCESSFUL IN THEIR INDUSTRY? What works for me is setting goals. And when you reach that goal you set another one. Just keep working hard, keep investing in education, grow, and never give up! Believe in yourself, there is nothing you can’t achieve if you put your mind to it. Keep dreaming! What’s next for you? Do you have a plan for the next 5 years and where you want to be? I would like to be on a successful TV show. Make some more movies. Possibly open a business. Keep growing. I love being productive and busy. EGGPLANT STIR-FRY WITH THAI BASIL PAD MAKEUA YAO Serves:3–4
INGREDIENTS SPAETZLE (GERMAN NOODLE) •

As needed: Vegetable oil for deep-frying 14oz. Chinese or Japane eggplants, cut into 2” cylinders, then quartered horizontally
•
Garlic Cloves, chopped2–5
•
Thai chilies, finely chopped
•
9oz. Ground pork
•
1 Tbsp Sugar, granulated
•
1/2 cup Red bell pepper, julienned
•
1/2cups Thai basil
•
For serving Jasmine rice
DIRECTIONS Add 1 inch of oil in a wok or pot and bring it to 350°F over medium- high heat. Add the eggplants, a small batch at a time, and fry for20–30 seconds. Remove from the oil and drain on paper towel. Note: We are just par-cooking the eggplants, so they should still be quite firm at this point. Do not fry them any longer than 30 seconds as they can absorb a lot of oil if they become too soft. Make the sauce by combining 1/4cup of the stock with all the other sauce ingredients in a small bowl. Heat 1 Tbsp of oil in a wok or a large sauté pan over medium-high heat. Add the garlic and Thai chilies; stir until the garlic starts to brown. Add the ground pork and stir until the broken apart and is about 60% done

t’s hard to overlook anything in Kenya; its surfaces are too diverse not to intrigue even the common wayfarer; too visceral not to elicit attention. And it’s not just the elephants, zebras, wildebeests, giraffes or lions that make me say this. It’s the coast lines along the Indian Ocean—some of which are lined with palms and dusted in white sand. It’s the great lakes, accented in turquoise and jade. It’s the mountain topping the skyline, capped with ice, or the acacia tree on the horizon, sprouted in solitude. It’s all of these sites, heaved in modern motion, and the national parks, fringed with historic cultures, that make this safari magical.

L I F E It’s the word “safari”, nearly synonymous with east Africa, that conjures visuals impossible to forget. Tortilis Camp is a private property in Kenya which has been designed to blend into the hillside. In this hearth of the African bush, wildlife wanders along the property’s borders without bother. Here, the design is set to frame views of the towering Mt. Kilimanjaro or to spot baboons in the distance strutting alongside zebra. At night, when most of the property is illuminated by the dim glow of lanterns, the point is not to see where you’re going, but to see and hear where you are. Picture this: a star studded sky, surrounded by birds calling into the night, while elephants trumpet by the on-site watering hole. A quick hopper flight from Nairobi, 22 canvas tents

with thatched roofs are tucked away from one another on the fringe of Amboseli National Park. Located on its own 30,000 acre wildlife conservancy, the camp’s terrain is known for unobstructed views of the snow-capped peak, and a concentration of wildlife—especially its protected elephants, of which there are 1,600 in the greater park—that make any safari in Tortilis Camp’s Landcruisers a breeze. Guests are left in a snug tent with electricity and warm lighting, running water in the bath, coffee and tea, and fresh biscuits. Its interior decor balance the unruly bush. treated with herbed sauce and flavors freshly blended and picked from the property’s organic gardens. Despite having no nearby contenders to count, the camp has the freshest spinach and fennel for hundreds of miles. Honey is sourced from the estate, where you’ll only compete with the honey badgers known to sneak into the hives. But perhaps the best experiences of all are when meals are shared off property, post game-drive. Opt for a Bush Breakfast, and you’ll rise before the sun does, heading out on safari to indulge your first bite of the day in the savannah, where chefs set up proper meals—communal tables and pop-up kitchens directly on the plains—to be enjoyed in the thick of the park. In the evening, enjoy that same sun as it eases below the horizon
during your sundowner, with your gin and tonic at hand. It’s absolutely about being aware, and noticing uncommon surroundings; it’s about being present. This is where you safari.
