AUTHOR BOOK REVIEW

THE AFFAIRS OF OTHERS

AMY GRACE LOYD

BY EMILY KLINE

Dark, sensual, and rich with emotion, The Affair of Others is Amy Grace Loyd’s debut novel. For a first time novelist, Amy creates a raw setting of a Brooklyn apartment building, which acts as a sanctuary of sorts. The brownstone building is home to young Celia, the damaged and broken-hearted protagonist of the novel, as well as her many tenants. As a widow, Celia lost herself and her life, but soon is drawn into the building’s affairs, arguments, grief, and violence. This drama allows Celia to find herself and her sense of purpose in life. Human arrangements are explored through layers of time, grief, and love in The Affair of Others. Loyd keeps the reader intrigued as Celia’s barriers disintegrate and all her rules fall away. Amy Grace Loyd, a former fiction and literary editor at Playboy, has secured a place on bookshelves with a refined style of storytelling. Book clubs everywhere will be looking forward to her next novel. 14

Mothers and babies crammed into the small, tattered structure, waiting patiently to have their babies weighed and immunized.

MY TRIP WITH CARE

A

s an ambassador for CARE, I travelled to Zambia so that I could see first-hand the work they were doing with mothers and babies as part of their Moyo Wa Bana program, which aims to improve the lives of children under the age of five. In Zambia, 10% of children will die before their fifth birthday. This sobering fact is what makes CARE’s Maternal and Child Health initiatives so important. Moyo Wa Bana seeks to empower women to take health matters into their own hands. I was eager to witness the progress being made, but nervous of the unknown. I wasn’t sure how I’d feel venturing into the remote rural villages where the clinics were located. Dirt roads stretched for miles. We travelled by car and our treks took hours. Every once in a while, we would pass a woman walking into the seemingly endless stretch of road, barefooted and often carrying water or firewood. It was difficult to know they

24

| the stylish life magazine | REMARK

would walk so long, carrying so much. I felt guilty that we were driving. Guilt was a pervasive emotion for me on that trip. I couldn’t help but to compare my life to the lives of the people I was meeting in Zambia. Mundane things like washing my hands with warm water, applying sunscreen and bug spray now felt like such a luxury. Thoughts of air conditioning, grocery stores and malls back home lead to conflicted feelings of embarrassment and good fortune. When I arrived at the first health outpost, I was overwhelmed. I’m not sure exactly what I was expecting. It was an open concrete structure without electricity or running water. Mothers and babies crammed into the small, tattered structure, waiting patiently to have their babies weighed and immunized. The weighing scale was hanging from a tree branch outside. It was muggy, the air was stagnant and the wait was long, but no one complained.

You see, this humble health outpost was a vast improvement from before. Instead of walking for hours, they could make it here by foot in under an hour. Access to this kind of monitoring and simple health care is vitally important and now it was within reach of more women and their families. Here, trained volunteers from the community checked the children’s breathing and updated their records for future reference. Mothers were also given information on best breast-feeding techniques, malaria avoidance and dysentery prevention and treatment. The women were grateful to be there and the volunteers were happy to help their communities. The Moyo Wa Bana project was a true success because it was a true collaboration between CARE and the communities. Since my visit, the Moyo Wa Bana initiative has actually ended in the rural communities

MY TRIP WITH CARE

lifestyle

I visited. However, its momentum continues because of the integral involvement of community members and district health officials. Moyo Wa Bana belongs to the people of Zambia. The progress hasn’t ended because funding for that program ended. The passion for change remains. Best practices, interventions and routines will continue to save the lives of children and mothers and therefore benefit whole communities. In fact, it’s estimated that over 400,000 children have been positively affected so far. I’m grateful that I had a chance to experience such a tremendous program in action and feel honoured to share my experience with you. I believe in the work CARE does to empower women and children around the world. Their holistic community approach is essential to the sustainability of programs such as Moyo Wa Bana and ensures that progress continues long after programs have officially ended. I think about those outposts every time I’m fortunate enough to visit my own doctor’s office and hope that one day the access to health care that we enjoy here is available to everyone. CLOSET TO CUSTOM: FABRICS & FURNITURE

CLOSET TO CUSTOM: FABRICS & FURNITURE BY DAVID ARDUINI, PRINCIPAL OF ALBERT DAVID DESIGN INC.

There are three kinds of people in the world of design and fashion: those who are bold and willing to take risks, those who are reserved and like to keep it neutral, and those who just do not care. In today’s world of fashion and design trends, anything goes. My job as a design expert is to depict an illusion of distressed fabrics (or perhaps neatly pressed), savory colours, bold patterns and exquisite textures. As I embark on an adventure of furniture designing and fabrics to pair with each unique piece, I turn to my clients for inspiration. I visit their private dressing rooms to see what fabrics and patterns drape their closets and inspire their look when they get ready every day.The classics that we have all heard of: Versace, Fendi, Armani and Missoni, are a few of the big names that transpire from a look of fashion to home décor.

FROM THE RACK TO YOUR HOME Most designers like to keep things flowing, but my goal is to make the eye stop for a moment and think about what it is 36

| the stylish life magazine | REMARK

seeing before continuing to wander. This creates flow and curiosity within a space. When it comes to choosing fabrics, I take inspiration from some of Toronto’s top fashion gurus. One fashion expert is Alexzandra Giordano, Lifestyle Fashionist and Director of AVGstyle.com. Her style is one that expresses a mixture of direction, elegance, and an eclectic nature. These are all characteristics that can translate into your home.

FABRICS THAT TALK There are many aspects that need to be considered when making a choice in fabric, such as; the quality, colour, patterns, texture, and price. You have to keep in mind the use for the fabric. Many fabrics can be used for upholstery, but not necessarily for drapery. You can also transform furniture by merely adding in a patterned fabric. Take the elegant and bold frame of a Versailles domed

CLOSET TO CUSTOM: FABRICS & FURNITURE

home

chair. It will speak volumes in the entrance of a home. Add in the bold and vibrant pattern of Missoni and you have just mastered the look of a very traditional, yet contemporary vibe for your space.

FENDI TO TRENDY With its innovation and customary craftsmanship, you are sure to have a timeless look with the richness found in Fendi fabrics. The fabrics are defined by fur and precious skins, —a look that can be coupled with clean lines and a modern design to give the space a sense of sophistication.

GOLD... SAY NO MORE The look of gold does not have to appear gaudy. Gold can be given a sense of flare by using it to accent custom furniture pieces. Try pairing gold with a Versace inspired pattern: a rich, high gloss wooden backed chair finished in indigo blue velvet and stitched in gold. This is a bold look that gives your home a sense of uniqueness. Choosing your fabrics does not have to be the starting point when putting together a custom sofa or a timeless lounge chair, but it is a huge investment that should be thought out wisely. Custom furnishings stem from quality, and with that comes durability in fabrics and precision and, precision in furniture detailing. The next time you look in your closet, do not lose sight of that floral patterned top that you wore twenty years ago, —it may just be the fabric of choice for your next sofa.

Decoding The First Date BY MELISSA GROSSER

The process of dating can be a stressful, nerve wrecking, hit or miss situation that the majority of people dread in the beginning. When you meet someone or are set up with “the one”, at least according to your mutual friends, you may approach the first date as a job rather than a fun opportunity to interact with an individual who is fresh and new to your world. Instead of treating a first date like a chore, transform it into a fun activity – a chance to experience something new and feeling good as you do it.

Setting The Date To gauge what your date is like, pick up the phone and have a conversation for a few minutes. Get a feel for the person and start to learn what they like. If the conversation flows, dive right in and set up the in-person date. Skip the typical coffee shop – try to find an interactive activity where you two can talk and experience something fun. Rather than experiencing something that feels like a job interview, this is a better way to determine chemistry and common interests when you are relaxed and having fun.

Pre-Date Prep No matter what the background is on the first date – whether you are excited or not, it is important to put your best foot forward. Once you establish where the date will take place, make sure your wardrobe selection is appropriate for the activity. In terms of the actual look, put forth effort so you appear put together and you are showing off your physical attributes with confidence. Let your best self shine through to your date without overdoing yourself. Aside from your attire, keep your mind open and clear. No pre-date research is necessary. Go into it and learn about your date first hand.

Haute Couture! Style!

Glamour! Fashion is all

about looking and feeling

good, designer labels and fantastic accessories with

little concern for price and practicality. So, it’s very inspiring when people

in the industry show that there is more to fashion

than striking a pose, fancy dresses and all the fluff.

Ocean Style showcases the finest in fashion, beauty, food, travel and entertainment from the Caribbean. Every year Ocean Style puts together a celebrity weekend in Jamaica, sponsored by Appleton and Iberostar, to garner awareness for different charities and causes, as well as to raise funds to help. This year the annual Ocean Style fashion show and golf invitational was held in Montego Bay. The event benefits the Barrett Town All Age School, which is for children who due to socio-economic or learning challenges, did not have the opportunity to attend secondary school. The funds raised at this year’s event will go directly to building a library for the students.

Teach them well and let them lead the way’.” Bloch has styled countless celebrities including Halle Berry, Sandra Bullock, Salma Hayek, Nicole Kidman, Drew Barrymore, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, just to name a few. His creative vision and visual concepts have been seen on the covers and pages of countless magazines. His unique insight into fashion has led him to be seen as a style ambassador, creating and presenting fashion concepts around the world. Designer, stylist, actor, fashion expert may all be hats Phillip Bloch wears, but there is much more to him than red carpets, sequins and runways. He generously takes a lot of his time to give back. Besides lending his face to the event, Bloch took time to meet with the young Jamaican designers and local models, giving them styling tips, pointers for the runway as well as answer any questions and concerns they had about presenting a captivating catwalk. “Fashion is universal. The Jamaican designers were truly talented,” says Bloch. “There were designs in Montego Bay I could see on the runways of New York, Paris or London.” On top of his involvement with the Ocean Style showcase, Bloch is working on a new show with a charity focus;

“Giving back has always been important to me, especially when it means helping children”

Not surprisingly, Bitsie names her role on Parkland. “Parkland was a different experience from anything else I’ve shot not only because it was set in the 1960s and about one of the most controversial assassinations in history, but because I was playing someone who actually lived and breathed.” This talented actress has more than enough on her plate at the moment but is already working on some upcoming projects. She will be in Chicago to shoot Dead Heist, what she describes as an “indie heist thriller”, opposite Gil Bellows and Michael Eklund. “It’s a project by a cool young director named Brian Klemsrud and I can’t wait to work with him. He wrote the script which is excellent.” Bitsie is truly remarkable at everything she does. We here at REMARK cannot wait to see what she has in store for us next! T

he bathroom is a private space where the personality of a homeowner can be expressed, especially in the master ensuite. More importantly, the bathroom is the second most valuable renovation one can make after the kitchen. No matter what your budget is, whether you are starting from scratch or just making over, there are some basic elements in the design process which will give you a successful and pleasing result. Classic elements such as marble, white finishes, and polished hardware will always make for an attractive bathroom. A light countertop with a simple straight edge will keep the look classic. Marble such as Carrara, Statuario and Calcutta are natural stone finishes, which are timeless. If you like the durability and look of quartz stone, there are many options which have very little to no pattern, with colour choices to suit most applications. Polished and shiny finishes will keep you wiping watermarks, however, they will also give you that sparkle and shine which is so pleasing in a well appointed bathroom.

BLISSFUL BATHROOMS

BLISSFUL BATHROOMS

Consider the shape of the handles when you are making your plumbing fixture choices. It is easy to be wooed by the looks of an interesting shape, such as a box or a ball when you’re in a showroom, but think about when your hands and eyes are soapy and you need to reach for the water fast! Remember, a lever is the easiest to manage. Lighting is critical to all spaces in the house, especially in the bathroom. If you have the luxury of a window or skylight, the experience you have in your space will be exponentially better. There are many options to create good light in the bathroom. I recently renovated a bathroom which had a tiny window in a very awkward spot. We added a 36” x 16” skylight to the space, as well as, pot lights and vanity lights, providing the client a variety of options to use the space. Other luxurious items such as: a dock for music, a television within a mirror, a steam unit, and shower jets are becoming commonplace now for the discerning client who appreciates a good ‘bath’ as the Romans did in the past, and some cultures still value to this day. Bathing is a ritual which is performed by all in a variety of ways, whether very privately, shared with a partner, daily long shower sessions, or a quick shower. We begin and end our day in the bathroom the more ergonomically sound and aesthetically pleasing it is, the happier our days and nights will be.

home

TIPS:

CALM COLOUR SCHEME Use a set of colours with little contrast. A comfortable blend of warm creams, cool whites and sophisticated greys will give you a timeless look and spa feeling. Take cues from a classic marble like Statuario, used here in this bright and cheerful bathroom.

CABINET HARDWARE ADDS PERSONALITY Changing the cabinet hardware to suit your style and personality is easy with the variety of options available. From Swarowski crystal, which can be elegant and feminine, to rustic metal which can be urban and masculine, there is something for everyone.

ACCESSORIES FOR FUNCTIONALITY You begin and end your day in the bathroom, make it a positive experience by creating a ‘counter-scape’ with items which you use daily presented in attractive containers and a pot of flowers. It truly does make a difference in your day when the environment around you is presented in a calm and attractive manner.

As for what interested Steve in this role in the first place? He says “so many things clicked for me, it was instant. He explains that “playing a werewolf brings with it a raw, unique intensity and a very palpable sexuality. health The first few months of the new year tend to leave me cold, not just temperature -wise, but also sexually. I go through a dry spell from January to April most years, and typically it doesn’t bother me too much. Hell, sometimes it’s a much needed break from the nonsense that often accompanies single-life sex. Now I am shacked up in a serious relationship with a guy who loves to love my body, yet my sex drive is operating in slow motion. I recently decided that something has to be done so I’ve been doing some research into new toys, shows, and pop culture that will inspire and ignite the flame that is burning low these cold, dry months.

SEX SHOWS

North America is home to dozens of sex shows, taking place year round in most major metropolises with fun and frisky names such as Sexapalooza, Exxxotica and Frolicon. Ranging from mild to wild, these consumer and social conventions offer everything from demonstrations, workshops, to open play. Check your local convention centre listings or do an online search for sex shows to find the one that is closest to you. Prepare to block off a few nights to try out everything you walk away with. I hope to attend the next one coming through town, and if I do, I’ll be sure to report back with a full write up!

CONDOMS

Not too long ago my doctor’s motto when I stepped through his office door was “condoms, condoms, condoms”, and thankfully it worked. I’ve had a clean bill of health since first popping my cherry. Although they’re not my favourite sexual accessory, I still use them. Condom technology is finally getting closer to making them work for us, rather than just getting in the way. Durex now has a condom called “Mutual Climax”, with ribs and dots on the outside to enhance pleasure, and a slightly numbing lubricant on the inside to help him maintain control and last a little longer. Japanese condom maker Sagami has developed the world’s thinnest condom, measuring 0.01 mm thick, and sells them online through their website and Amazon. Bill Gates (yes, the Microsoft guy), has given $1 million in grants to a slew of university researchers to develop condoms that maintain sexual safety while also allowing for immense pleasure. This is incredibly promising for the next generation of condom users.

TOYS

Yoga balls are great for improving posture and strengthening the core. Some people even use them in place of their desk chairs to encourage them to sit up straight. Well now you can get off while working those abs! The Magic Ball is a new product that is the shape and size of a yoga ball, and also has handles and a dildo or butt plug attached. A great way to multitask, though I suggest you save it for your home office. If you’re looking for something a little more discreet to store in your home, many companies now sell prepackaged sex toy kits. There is the Box of Grey for those looking to bring BDSM into the bedroom, or the Blush Box for those couples that want something a little more tame but still sexy. Filled with things like handcuffs, feather wands, blindfolds, oils and whips, these all-in-one kits come inside nondescript storage cases that won’t cause awkward questions if anyone stumbles across them. Then there is the Limon by Minna, a small lemon-shaped vibrator designed for solo or couple’s use. Aside from being absolutely adorable and easy to turn on, off and up, it has a record option that “remembers” the pattern you use, allowing you to duplicate all sorts of sensations and orgasms. This is perfect for those sexual partners who stumble upon the right combination of pressure and movement to bring on an orgasm from time to time, but struggle to duplicate it afterwards.

TV

Ah, my go to erotic encounter inducer. TV these days, especially the stuff on cable, just “gets” me. Today’s TV offerings are downright sinful in all the right ways. From the brother-sister love on Game of Thrones and the TV miniseries version of V.C. Andrews’ Flowers in the Attic, to the scientific sex exhibited in Masters of Sex, and the bursting corsets and bulging muscles of Black Sails. A glass of wine and an hour or so of that kind of TV, and the icicles in my nether-region are damn near melted.

The greatest part about the items listed above is how well they complement each other. I can’t wait to visit Sexapalooza, place an order for my very own Limon, and then have handcuffed sex with my man while watching Black Sails and using a mutual climax condom! Ok, maybe that would be overkill, but I’ve got to admit I’m getting excited just thinking about it. Until next time, keep it safe, keep it sexy; and when all else fails, keep it as a great story.

POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION

Postpartum Depression

a woman’s life? There are a number of reasons. First, those dreaded hormones! Everything is out of whack and the brain needs some time to adjust to all of these changes to the body and the new responsibilities that come with a newborn. Increased stress levels can trigger depression for women who already had depression, suffered from severe PMS, or were at risk of suffering from depression before they conceived. Older maternal age and a traumatic birthing experience are also noted as risk factors for the

PERSONAL IMAGE

THE IMPORTANCE OF PERSONAL IMAGE BY: MARY CENTORAME PERSONAL IMAGE CONSULTANT AND OWNER OF DASH PERSONAL IMAGE CONSULTING

Like it or not, the human brain is hardwired to assess another person within the first 30 seconds of meeting them. Once that first impression is formed our opinion is rarely changed, leaving us little or no second chance to make a new first impression. Studies have affirmed just how important first impressions are and how your personal image or how others perceive you can have detrimental effects on your personal and professional life. Why are our brains hardwired this way? It has a lot to do with the fact that our ancient ancestors survival depended on it. Since they had no common language to rely on, within a blink of an eye they would have to determine whether the stranger approaching them posed a threat. That skill still remains with us today, often affecting our present lives. We use it to make judgments on how we

100

PERSONAL IMAGE

lifestyle

perceive someone based on their value to us and to our own social world. A negative assessment of how we are noticed could result in life altering consequences ranging from the ability to attract the right mate to having damaging effects on career opportunities or business success. There are three key factors that will determine your “personal image.

YOUR APPEARANCE: The visual impact you portray based on your appearance is what you will be judged by first. Although not a lot can be done about the physical attributes you were born with, you can make a tremendous impact and greatly improve how you are perceived. This can be done effectively through maintaining good personal hygiene, keeping hair and nails well groomed, knowing new makeup trends and choosing what compliments your best features. In fact, a little makeup has been proven to go a long way in determining how you are perceived. A new study funded by Procter and Gamble found that people judged women with makeup as being more attractive, competent and trustworthy than their bare faced peers. Additionally, the careful selection of clothing and hairstyles that best suit your features or body type, keeping your clothes current, tailored and well maintained are also highly influential factors on how others perceive you.

BEHAVIOUR: Your behaviour and how you treat others will determine how others perceive you. Having basic etiquette skills and demonstrating consideration towards others by being courteous and polite are important factors. Knowing how to converse with confidence and ease, maintaining good eye contact and proper handshaking techniques will exude confidence and professionalism to those in your personal and social life.

COMMUNICATION: Lacking communication skills will often sabotage your success in business as well as your personal life. Common traits such as mumbling, avoiding eye contact, nervous, incomplete or distracting mannerisms as well as de-energized speech can be deal breakers both in the board room and on that special date. Further, sarcastic, degrading or malicious comments, use of slang and offensive language can be very damaging to your personal image. As much as you may think that who you are and what you do is enough, your success does have a lot to do with what others think about you and the image you portray. This is why it is so important to be honest with yourself when you try to determine if you are truly sending out the right message on how you want to be noticed, whether it be at that job interview, a blind date or social function. The choices you make on how you look, how you behave and what you say will determine how others perceive you whether you like it or not. REMARK | the stylish life magazine |

THE SOUTHERN PO’ BOY COOKBOOK

COOKBOOK REVIEW

THE SOUTHERN PO’ BOY COOKBOOK: MOUTHWATERING SANDWICH RECIPES FROM THE HEART OF NEW ORLEANS BY TODD-MICHAEL ST. PIERRE BY EMILY KLINE

food

This delicious, full-colour cook book brings old favorites and new flavours to life with a variety of po’boys from traditional New Orleans. It includes offerings of the author’s own creations including Blackened Shrimp, Cuban-Style Pork and Pecan-Crusted Trout po’boys. These classic sandwiches combine light and flaky French bread with rich and hearty fillings for a lunch treat loved throughout the south. Recently, these sandwiches experienced a surge in popularity as chefs began to experiment with different flavours and toppings. Now, using The Southern Po’ Boy Cookbook as their guideline, home cooks everywhere can create the delicious, traditional versions, or try their hand at the bold new variations. Either way, you can bring a bit of the good old South to your kitchen table!

THE TREMÉ (FRIED CATFISH PO’ BOY) Serves 4

½ cup buttermilk 1 teaspoon Tabasco sauce ½ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper ¼ cup yellow cornmeal ¼ cup flour 2 teaspoons Cajun or Creole seasoning ¼ teaspoon minced fresh garlic 3 tablespoons canola oil, divided 4 (6-ounce) catfish fillets

ASSEMBLY

4 (6-inch) French rolls, split ½ bottle Louisiana-style tartar sauce 2 cups shredded lettuce 1 large Creole or beefsteak tomato, sliced Whisk together the buttermilk, Tabasco, salt, and cayenne in a medium bowl. In a large shallow dish, stir together the cornmeal, flour, Cajun or Creole seasoning, and garlic. In a large skillet over medium heat, heat half of the oil. Dip two catfish fillets into the buttermilk mixture, and dredge in the cornmeal and flour mixture, tapping off the excess. Fry the fillets until golden brown, turning once, about 6 minutes. Heat the remaining oil, and repeat the procedure for coating and cooking the other 2 fillets. Spread tartar sauce on both sides of the rolls. Layer on lettuce and tomato slices on each roll, and top with a catfish fillet. Serve immediately.
