e all know that Georgian Bay, located on Lake Huron in Northern Ontario is breathtakingly beautiful. But did you know that it’s fabulous? Like, round up your girlfriends for a weekend away fabulous? Did you know it’s romantic? Like, take a few days off work and plan a short get away with your significant other romantic? Did you know that it is home to a world class golf course and spa? Like, grab another couple and head up north for the ultimate play and relax getaway? Did you know that it’s a foodie destination? Like, drop what you’re doing right now and make a reservation before everyone else finds out about it type of dining? I didn’t. Not until I experienced the Cobble Beach Golf Resort and Spa about 20 minutes North of Owen Sound, Ontario. About two hours north of where we live in Toronto, I made the trip a family affair, bringing up my fiancée, mum and dad. That’s one of the great things about this destination – there’s something for everyone. It’s perfect for a girls weekend, a boys weekend, a mixed doubles weekend and even for a cross generational weekend. I assumed that the surroundings would be breathtaking, but didn’t expect for the inn itself to rival the beauty of nature. Built in 2006, the accommodations are pristine and elegantly luxurious. While there are a few cottages available for your enjoyment, the rooms at the inn are only a few steps away from both the relaxing spa, offering a full range of services from nail treatments to facials and massages, and the first class Sweetwater restaurant. What truly sets Coble Beach apart from everywhere else is the dinning. Surrounded by panoramic views of the bay on all sides, the restaurant offers up supremely decadent and delicious food created by Chef Tim Johnston. Of special note, is the scrumptious Lobster Mac n’ Cheese and the House Smoked Salmon with Quinoa and Sesame Yogurt. The Sweetwater restaurant balances the line perfectly between traditional and innovative cuisine; something that is comforting, but with

TRAVEL a twist. My party and I were lucky enough to partake in one of Chef Johnston’s tasting menus and wine pairings. Across the board, from the tantalizing wild mushroom croquette appetizers, to the perfectly seasoned pheasant terrine, right down to the sous-vide Angus Strip Loin Steak, everything was perfectly executed, and for lack of a better word, thoroughly yummy! Operations Manager Greg Gutowski expertly paired every wine,

which took us around the world, from California, to Tuscany and back to Ontario. The whole experience was indulgent, decadent and worth every calorie! The surprises continued to present themselves throughout our trip to Georgian Bay. Not being familiar with many Ontario Vineyards outside of Niagara, Coffin Ridge Winery was a most
welcome surprise. The vineyard takes its name from the hills it is nestled into, which legend has it, is haunted by the ghosts of stranded British sailors who succumbed to our Canadian winters and were never given a proper burial. The vineyard has paid homage to its colourfully macabre past by naming some of its tastiest offerings “Into the Light White”, “Back from the Dead Red” and “Resurrection Rosé”. Coffin Ridge does have offering in the LCBO and I would highly encourage you to pick up a bottle. Not being a golfer myself, I figured the perfect companion on this trip would be my father, an avid and skilled golfer who has teed off all over the world and has played alongside the likes of the “Great White Shark” himself, Greg Norman. While I could
easily assess the beauty of the course, which was vibrant and pristinely maintained, even after the harshest of winters we just experienced, I left it up to the well-seasoned golfer to evaluate the actual course itself. According to my father, “One of the Top five courses I have ever played.” The Cobble Beach Golf Resort and Spa is like a unicorn in the mist – it’s so well rounded, offering something for everyone, that you assume it must just be a figment of your imagination. But alas, this place does exist. Bring your appetite, your golf bag and your spa shoes and head up north to Cobble Beach – you won’t be disappointed!

THE BRIDESMAIDS BY EIMEAR LYNCH REVIEWED BY LISA MACDONALD
Most of us have been there. Some of us have been luckier than others. Some of us have found that the experience brought us closer together. For some of us, it pushed our friendship past the limit and there was no going back. Being a bridesmaid, depending on the person, can either be a huge honour or a monumental pain-in-theass. In her most recent work “The Bridesmaids”, Eimear Lynch chronicles the tales of almost 60 different real-life bridesmaids, and their stories are all over the spectrum. In the chronicle told in the chapter titled “The Muse”, the experience of the bridesmaid was inspiring, almost magical. These two particular grooms asked their wedding party, all strong women who inspired them to be better men, not to be bridesmaids, but “muses”. Each woman walked down the aisle to “Feeling Good” by Nina Simone and the grooms went out of their way to make sure the women knew how important they were in their lives. The experience left the bridesmaid feeling truly honoured and special. Conversely, the experience detailed in the chapter “The Almost Bridesmaid” is truly the things that movies are made of. The bride was so demanding and unreasonable that the woman who shared her story actually ended up being kicked out of the wedding party and her whole family was disinvited to the wedding. Lynch does a great job of covering every angle of the experience and there truly are some gems along the way, whether they be moving, horrifying or hilarious. Almost every woman can relate to these stores in some shape, way or form and it’s a riot to read the various chapters and know that someone else out there has gone through what we’ve been through or maybe even worse! “The Bridesmaids” is a simple and easy read. It will definitely make you wonder about what kind of bride you were or might be!

REAL EXPERIENCE, REAL PEOPLE
BEHIND THE LENS:
WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY WITH
KELSEY GOODWIN BY EMILY KLINE PHOTOGRAPHY BY KELSEY GOODWIN
Capturing the moments of the union between two people in love is an important aspect of any wedding. Photographing these highlights of their special day allow people to look back and reminisce on one of the most special days of their lives. Hiring a photographer is stressful. Determining if their style is right for you is tricky, and for the price you will be paying, you want to make sure you get the right professional for the job. Kelsey Goodwin has a talent for capturing the moments in life we want to remember. Below Kelsey explains how her obsession with photography started, what you need to know when hiring a photographer for your wedding day, and dishes on some behind the scene stories.
TELL US A BIT ABOUT WHO KELSEY GOODWIN IS? I was conceived in an airplane washroom over Reno Nevada. Don’t ask me how I know that and feel free not to share it. I really enjoy the scents of vanilla, leather and chlorine (but not all together) and I’m not truly happy with myself unless I’m productive. I love science fiction movies, random facts, audiobooks and slippers (the only thing stopping me from bringing them to friends’ houses is social deviance).
22
| THE STYLISH LIFE MAGAZINE
HOW DID YOUR ADDICTION TO PHOTOGRAPHY START? When I was 16, my mom bought me a photo shoot with a local photographer. I had always been very interested in photography; I took photos obsessively and had many scrapbooks and journals. During the photo shoot, I asked the photographer about his equipment and history, so he offered me an after school assisting position. I learned how to compose images and manipulate them in photoshop. I was hooked from then on. I remember looking at wedding photographers’ websites and just knowing that one day I would be doing that.
WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO GET INTO WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY? As a hopeless romantic, it was my immediate choice. I love Taylor Swift songs and cheesy romance novels. I love bringing a fashion editorial approach to my portraits, but a photojournalism approach on the wedding day is super important because it’s a raw capture of the emotions that surround a wedding celebration.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT SHOOTING WEDDINGS? They remind me that the world is full of beauty and love. One of my favourite moments to photograph in particular is something I figured out after shooting so many; when the witnesses are signing, the bride and groom always have a moment. It’s the first official moment after they are husband and wife and the look they share says it all.
YOUR LEAST FAVOURITE THING?
It’s also helpful to be in two places at once - I usually have my second shooter photograph the guys getting ready while I’m with the girls in the morning. Afterwards, we sync our time stamps up so that when we deliver the photos, the couple gets to see the moments in chronological and simultaneous order. As a bride, it’s really cool to see that in the moment when your mom’s eyes welled up when she saw you in your dress, your groom was doing his tie, looking at his reflection with an anticipated expression.

It can be an exhausting job for a number of reasons. This doesn’t stop me from leaving a wedding at the end of the day floating on a cloud. A

it, a camera is just a piece of equipment, which means it’s always better to have someone else covering the same moment, just in case. The most important reason being the ability to get two angles at once. It’s especially helpful during the ceremony when you want both the shot of the bride and her father walking down the aisle - and the groom’s reaction. It’s also great for two simultaneous close-ups of the bride and groom’s faces during their vows and the reaction of the guests as well.
A common misconception is that if you hire an inexpensive photographer instead of a seasoned pro, or get uncle bob to take the photos (because he has a nice camera) that the photos will turn out just fine. I’m not saying that everyone needs to invest in a boutique wedding photographer, sometimes couples prefer to emphasize the food etc. instead. There is no right or wrong way to plan your wedding day, but if the photography is an important aspect for you, I highly recommend hiring a professional. You won’t regret it and you really do get what you pay for.

ANY DO’S OR DONT’S FOR POSING FOR WEDDING PHOTOS? I will pretty much try any pose before I rule it out. You never know what is going to suit the couple/ environment and this adventurous attitude has led to some pretty unique images. I do tell my brides to breathe through their mouth because it reminds them to breathe and makes them look relaxed and feminine. When the groom wraps his bride in a hug from behind, I remind my brides that he is your protector; therefore you should keep your arms inside of his. In some wedding photos, I see the bride’s arms on the outside of the hug which makes her arms bulge and elbows bend at an awkward angle. We learn several tips like this during our engagement shoot so that on the wedding day it becomes second-nature.

QUICK & DIRTY UPHOLSTRY DIY BY TIFFANY PRATT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KOKO TCHORBADJIAN
The first thing I say to my fellow makers and
people that want to attempt a DIY is: “you do not have to be “good” at anything to do it”. I am living proof. I try a lot of projects just by winging it to get the job done. I have learned a lot along the way that I would love to share. Today, I will share some quick and dirty tricks to reupholster a chair in case you fall in love with a gem on the side of the street and want to make it yours. It happens all the time.
THINGS YOU WILL NEED:
HOT GLUE COTTON BATTEN SCISSORS FABRIC TRIM STAPLE GUN STAPLES BRISTOL BOARD SCREW DRIVER MUSIC
PHASE #1
ASSESS THE SITUATION If you see something at a market or on the side of the street, the first thing you need to do is check out the condition of the found goods. Is the structure is good shape? Is it worthy of the love you are about to bestow? Is the padding in good shape? Will you need to replace anything? This is the time where you ask yourself if you will end up spending more on fixing it than finding another gem.

PHASE #2
ACCEPT THE MISSION If you decided that this chair is going to change the face of your room and your life, then collect your supplies, carve the time and get started! Please find all of the items listed above and do not collect $500 or pass go onto phase #3 unless you have it all. Head outside or in some spacious place then rock on.
PHASE #3
DESTRUCTION AND CREATION Pull your screwdriver or scissors out and tear the seat off and check out the condition of your padding. If in the raw, and your padding looks ample, leave it. If not, then trace an extra layer or two of cotton padding and hot glue that puppy on top of the existing padding. Then pull out your new fabric and roughly cut out a generous amount of it to tightly wrap around your new padding. Get your staple gun and load it up and start tacking it down. Cut off the excess fabric from around the stapled edge. Trace your seat shape out on Bristol board and seal up the fabric edge.
PHASE #4
THE CHERRY ON TOP Once you have your seat recovered in the new fabric, now is the time to add any fancy new trims to it with some good old hot glue. This makes any “unprofessional ripples or edges disappear instantly and create a fun textured finish. Once this final touch is added, it is time to get that screwdriver out and replace the seat. Hey! You did it! Yeah you did. You recovered your own chair and it looks really good. Really good! Happy upholstering, upcycling and antiupping to you!

400 g (14 oz) of Feta cheese (or another sheep’s cheese) 2 tbsp of flour 2 eggs 3 tbsp of dried breadcrumbs 2 litres (8. cups) of cooking oil Table salt Freshly ground black pepper Leave the feta in the fridge until the last minute so that it remains nice and firm. Cut the feta into sticks about 1 cm (. in) wide. Put the flour into a dish, beat the eggs in a second dish and mix the breadcrumbs with a pinch of salt and a twist of pepper, in a third dish. Heat the fryer to 170°C (338°F). Put the sticks of feta into each dish in sequence, coating them with the flour, then the eggs and finally the breadcrumbs. Place them carefully in the basket and lower into the oil. Cook for 3 minutes. Drain the feta frites and tip them onto a large plate covered with kitchen paper. Decoding The First Date BY MELISSA GROSSER
The process of dating can be a stressful, nerve wrecking, hit or miss situation that the majority of people dread in the beginning. When you meet someone or are set up with “the one”, at least according to your mutual friends, you may approach the first date as a job rather than a fun opportunity to interact with an individual who is fresh and new to your world. Instead of treating a first date like a chore, transform it into a fun activity – a chance to experience something new and feeling good as you do it.
Setting The Date To gauge what your date is like, pick up the phone and have a conversation for a few minutes. Get a feel for the person and start to learn what they like. If the conversation flows, dive right in and set up the in-person date. Skip the typical coffee shop – try to find an interactive activity where you two can talk and experience something fun. Rather than experiencing something that feels like a job interview, this is a better way to determine chemistry and common interests when you are relaxed and having fun.
Pre-Date Prep No matter what the background is on the first date – whether you are excited or not, it is important to put your best foot forward. Once you establish where the date will take place, make sure your wardrobe selection is appropriate for the activity. In terms of the actual look, put forth effort so you appear put together and you are showing off your physical attributes with confidence. Let your best self shine through to your date without overdoing yourself. Aside from your attire, keep your mind open and clear. No pre-date research is necessary. Go into it and learn about your date first hand.

LEISURE WHAT WAS THE MOST REWARDING, AND YET MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT ABOUT WORKING ON SUCH A SUCCESSFUL SHOW LIKE “DEXTER”? I worked on the second episode of season one, before the show reached phenomenon status. Having a guest role on a show is always a challenge. The cast and crew know each other, and then you, the new kid, comes along. The real pleasure is when one of the series regular cast member’s makes you feel invited and respected.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING WHEN YOU ARE NOT ACTING? I enjoy sleeping a lot, sleeping is highly underrated. Seriously though, I have a vintage motorcycle that I have wanted to rebuild for a long time. I like to work with my hands. My wife and I have a cabin in Lake Gregory, and in between sailing and BBQs, I like to work on the place. I have also been known to play a few classical pieces on the guitar.
WHAT GOALS DO YOU HAVE FOR YOUR CAREER IN THE FUTURE? I know there’s a good beauty pageant contestant answer for this one. Of course I have goals, I want it all. Then again, if I focus on that, I am not living in the moment.
WOULD YOU AGREE YOU’RE KIND OF A BADASS? Yes, yes I would.

burning loads of calories. However, and you may have heard this one before, calories are best burnt during sleep and inactivity. While doing mass cardio does burn a lot of calories, it isn’t the most efficient way to burn calories. One of the most time-efficient ways to burn more calories is to actually gain more muscle. For every pound of additional muscle you gain, your body will burn an additional 50-70 calories per day. So, if you gain ten pounds of muscle, you will automatically burn 500-700 more calories per day than you did before. Thus, those days of worrying about
DEADLIFTS After the squat, the deadlift is the second most important exercise. The deadlift is the most effective exercise for building the core. It is a compound movement that works a variety of muscles groups: hamstrings, glutes, spinal erector, biceps, traps, forearms and quads. It is imperative that this movement be performed to perfection, otherwise injuries are imminent. Begin with no bar at all and just watch your technique in the mirror, then proceed to use a

programs and exercises that all seem to have the solutions to give you that six-pack in five days, or perfectly sculpted body you’ve always wanted. For the most part, any exercise done with proper technique and the right amount of rest, weight, reps and sets can be positively affective. Nonetheless to get really fit you need one thing that trumps everything else; hard work and high intensity. Below I have listed the top five exercises everyone must include in to gain maximum results, whether to lose weight, gain muscle or just tone (lose weight and gain
Everyday movements like picking things up, throwing, punching and pressing things over head all involve the shoulder. The shoulder is the most moveable and unstable joint in the body. To remain stable, it must be kept in place by muscles, ligaments, and tendons therefore the shoulder muscles must be strengthened to keep it strong, flexible and coordinated. are struggling with that, perhaps it’s time to work on it. The push up may be the most frequently used upper body exercise in the fitness world. Here’s why, pushups exercise the pectoral muscles, triceps, and anterior deltoids, with supplementary benefits to the midsection as a whole. The push up builds upper and mid body strength that can add definition to your physique. Upper body strength tends to be a woman’s number one weakness as far as body strength goes, and most try to solve the problem by ignoring it all together, while the opposite needs to happen. Spend time building your upper body strength with elevated push ups and combine bench presses to your weekly workout routine.
SQUATS Probably the most powerful and functional exercise is the squat. Squats work the entire lower body, specifically the quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, and the muscles that make up the calves. When doing squats, foot placement
PLANKS The plank is one of the best exercises for a flat, toned stomach because it works all of the muscles in your core, including the rectus abdominus (the “six-pack muscles” you can see), transverse abdominus, internal and external obliques, hips, and back. I would rather train my clients’ core doing plank than all the other fancy exercises out there. To increase the intensity, add weight to the back for resistance or create an un-balanced surface to strengthen the internal obliques more. There you have it. Give the cardio machine a little break and execute these exercises in your weekly workout routine. You will be glad that you did. FIVE SIMPLE WAYS TO ADD SOME ACTION BY: DR. ALEXANDER YU
96
| THE STYLISH LIFE MAGAZINE
HEALTH Kick away the sedentary practices in your busy work life by incorporating these five simple exercises into your busy schedule.
BRING A YOGA BALL TO WORK AND BE A TEAM PLAYER BY SHARING IT AMONGST YOUR COWORKERS Sometimes we need to ditch our sitting chair for a more core engaging seat. Use a yoga ball anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes and pass it on to another coworker and get them to do the same. Don’t forget to repeat in the second half of your workday.
WALK OVER INSTEAD OF EMAILING OR CALLING YOUR CO-WORKER In a big office setting, sometimes it’s just easier to pick up the phone for a quick question or sending an email. It’s time to change that habit and walk over to them. Face to face talk is not only engaging, but it also gets you out of the chair.
DESK BOUND? HAVE NO FEAR HERE ARE SOME STRETCHES YOU CAN DO! • Cross the right leg over the left with the outside of the right shin resting just above the knee. Hold this position for a minute and do the same on the other side. • Extend one leg at a time until it is parallel to the ground and flex the toes towards you at the very end. Complete 20 reps for each leg. • Grab the bottom of your chair and let the neck side bend to the right for 30 seconds and to the left for 30 seconds. Repeat every 1 - 2 hours!
ALL I ASK IS 5 MINUTES OF YOUR TIME BEFORE YOU SHOWER My favourite activity to tackle balance, strength and stretching is with a few yoga poses. Not sure which ones to do? Jump on yoga.com and there are a ton of poses with great instructional videos. Select five that you’d like to do, give a minute for each pose or 30 seconds for each side for the same pose. Remember, know your limit and stretch within it. Not a big fan of yoga? Take the stairs for five minutes listening to your favourite songs. By the time you’re done singing and stair-mastering you’re set for your shower.
SUNDAY PLANK DAY If Sunday is your R & R day for a Netflix marathon of your favourite TV shows, challenge yourself to hold up a plank between episodes or commercial breaks. Start flat on your stomach with you arms in front of you. Place your forearms on a pillow (if you have hardwood/concrete flooring) or on the ground parallel to each other and set the balls of your feet on the ground and lift. Make sure that body is in a straight line and if this is too much of a challenge, drop the knees and give that a try. Do your best to hold the pose for as long as the commercial break or for a minute between episodes.

The Power Of Red Nails BY DELIA LUPAN

BEAUTY In recent years we’ve seen a myriad of nail art trends that are changing every season; new manicure techniques and patterns are surfacing, and various nail polish shades are being conceived. We’ve seen it all, from variations of French manicures, to magnetic nail polishes and all imaginable textures. Despite the evolution of trendy nail designs, one nail polish color that has always been seductive is red. Classic, glamorous and powerful, red nail polish has continuously been a beauty icon. No wonder it is one of the greatest selling cosmetic items of all times. How could it not be, when all the fashionable ladies wore it over and over again; who wouldn’t want nails like Marilyn Monroe? The red lips/red nails recipe was undeniably the leading style of the 1950’s, and the shiny red trend was the essence of glamour in Hollywood. It was Tinseltown that handed the red nail polish its admired charm and the cosmetic companies were ecstatic to help all women copy this style. Red echoed the luxury and richness of the stars and was also empowering for women, being such a strong and vivacious colour. To this day, the red nail look is still renowned as a fundamental statement maker. No matter how many times we’re curious about up-to-the-minute nail art, red nail polish will always hold a place in our hearts. Flawless red nails can make you feel equally glamorous and refined at the same time. The true power colour for our nails is red and lucky for us, there are never-ending shades. There are many different colors to choose from: cherry red, burgundy, scarlet, crimson, or just the classic red. If you think red polish is not for you, you just haven’t found your perfect shade yet. It can be so versatile, but still, many women shy away from this color, as it can be overwhelming. The main thing to remember when choosing the perfect red is being open to its endless possibilities. Allow yourself the liberty to explore and try the reds from head to toe. Red nail polish still is and will remain a fashion icon for a long time. It is timeless and gorgeous any time of the year, not only during the holiday season. Wearing it shows that you are sassy and not afraid to be bold, as red will always remain a symbol for passion and confidence. THE STYLISH LIFE MAGAZINE |

MODERN DAY JETIQUETTE EXPLORING THE PRIVATE PLANE EXPERIENCE. BY HILLARY RUNGE
124
| THE STYLISH LIFE MAGAZINE
LEISURE If you have been invited to fly on a private plane, you have just received a Golden Ticket from Willie Wonka himself. After you have RSVPd in your best “Absolutely, Darling” for this luxe trip, what should you know about flying private? Well, it ain’t your momma’s station wagon…
KNOW YOUR RIDE. You would “Google” a prospective blind date, would you not? Private aircraft can range from a four (4) seat light jet to a luxury heavy jet (e.g., a GV or G-five) – no two planes are the same. If you show up with 4 cases of luggage to sit on a light jet, your luggage may wind up staying home. Conversely, it would not be appropriate to show up in cut off shorts and a bikini top for a ride on a GV (unless you were already cast in that video). On smaller light jets, you will be given a seat and the cargo space is extremely limited. Heavy Jets tend to be the quintessential aircraft for luxury with space to recline, dining and work areas, and a flight attendant. There are many different shapes and sizes of aircraft in between those two extremes. One client was surprised to discover that some private aircraft does not offer lavatories with doors. The lavatory is a passenger seat that can be separated from the rest of the passengers by a curtain. On a co-ed flight, this can prove a bit daunting for the bathroom shy. Educate yourself on what to expect so that you are most comfortable during your trip.
DUDE, WHERE’S YOUR CAR? The terminal
TIMELINESS IS NEXT TO GODLINESS. We have all heard the rock n’ roll stories of running late for flights, but you are not a rock n’ roll star (yet). Stories you may not hear of is that most A-listers do arrive on time for their flights with exception of work conflicts. Being late does not make you cool. Pilots have to file flight plans for departure and takeoff. Plan to be at the FBO (Fixed Base Operator) no less than 15 minutes in advance of departure.
TSA AND FAA. The good news is you will not have to stand on line with the masses in the terminal. However, you will still need your government issued photo id (passport for international flights, valid Driver’s License for domestic flights). Also, please leave your contraband at home. Some incidents are best left for reality television stars, Ron White, and Justin Bieber - not you.
SIMPLY PACKED IS CLASSY. Have you ever seen an your favorite stars with tons of luggage? Their glamour equipment travels Jetson-style in only one oversized carry on and checked luggage you never see. That’s because they make other arrangements for their Haute Couture wardrobes – even when they fly privately. One regular carry on and an average size checked piece of luggage that is not overweight is standard. Some aircraft have very limited cargo space, so make sure to only bring the essentials. If you must bring two (2) pairs of shoes for each day of your one week vacation, consider shipping your luggage to the

landing. The staff is usually very accommodating, especially in larger cities. Call ahead and ask if they have parking available for the length of your trip as parking may be limited. The staff will advise you as to what is available.
HOSTESS WITH THE MOSTESS. Much like a dinner party, it is appropriate to bring an on-board gift for your host or hostess. (If you do go the discount department store route, make sure the sticker on the bottom of the spa candle is completely removed. And, no, Cold Duck does not count as

You will definitely be invited to travel with style again. And when you are ready to hire your own aircraft, give us a call.
