WELCOME
It is my great pleasure to introduce you to Flourish, Formby Hall’s debutant magazine. Immensely proud of the extensive refurbishment that the hotel has recently undergone, I wanted to use this first edition as an opportunity to take you, our members and guests, on a luxurious journey of the resort, to share with you everything the team and I know and love about it and the surrounding area. For visitors new to the area, this means giving you an insight into this glorious part of the North West; for our locals, members and regular guests, it means you may discover something new! The recent refurbishment brought newly reconfigured and stylish public areas; enhanced conferencing and events facilities; a luxurious upgrade to our bedrooms, including the addition of 14 stunning new loft bedrooms; a revitalised facelift for our spa, and the introduction of a suite of poolside thermal experiences. Our golf courses and PGA accredited facilities similarly received significant investment ensuring we retain our position as one of the best golf courses on the Golf Coast, if not the world. The resort now oozes style and sophistication and we sincerely hope you thoroughly enjoy your stay with us. Of course, underpinning everything we do here at Formby Hall is a fantastic team of people who are equally proud of the exciting changes that have taken place, a closeknit workforce that shares a real commitment to creating memorable experiences for all of our guests. I hope you enjoy reading this edition and that it will give you a real insight into how life flourishes at Formby Hall. We look forward to sharing our next chapter with you… ANDREW PYLE General Manager

GEORGIA WHELAN HR AND CUSTOMER SERVICE MANAGER YOUR ROLE? It starts with the staff. We’ve got over 200 people working here, and we really want everyone to be included. Even though we have so many different departments, we’re all one big team. We came up with our Formby vision and values and held workshops for all the staff so everyone can see what we’re trying to achieve and feel actively involved. There’s a big emphasis on the customer journey in our vision and values because we want our guests to have the same positive experience when they cross over the different departments throughout their stay. YOUR JOURNEY TO FORMBY? I started working in the reservations team at Formby Hall when I was 21. I took a bit of a career break and then had the opportunity to come back to help in the marketing department. I then became Management Admin Assistant, working closely with Andrew, our General Manager, and now here I am as HR and Customer Service Manager. Because we’re located in a village, we have a lot of local staff who have worked with us for a long time, so it’s really nice for our guests to get to know all of the familiar faces around the resort. A DAY IN THE LIFE… It’s very different every day, but I do have my daily tasks that I like to tick off. I normally start my day with a walk around the resort to say hi to everybody and check everything is running smoothly. Then it’s back to the office to look at customer feedback and arrange meetings with different departments. WHAT MAKES YOU TICK? A happy workforce and happy customers. AN INSIDER TIP... You have to try our afternoon tea, it’s beautifully presented and delicious. We have a new tea-infused cocktail that you can order in a teapot. I have never tried anything quite like it. IF YOU COULD TAKE A PIECE OF FORMBY HALL HOME WITH YOU… Definitely the coffee machine!

choices of eye-catching fabrics and finishes, chosen by the designer and the client, the stunning design scheme was created. The main areas for refurbishment focused on the bedrooms, the Fairway Grill Restaurant and Bar, the spa and breakout areas. It also included the creation of new loft bedrooms. Protocol supplied luxury sun loungers for guests to use and enjoy around the pool and in the spa’s relaxation areas. These were complemented with large spa bed cushions, providing ultimate comfort for spa-goers. Chairs, sofas and bar stools were introduced, styled with a combination of soft fabrics and bolder details, including navy and silver tones with flashes of colour to help achieve the interior design intent. With the aim of providing a relaxed and comfortable place to sit and dwell, Protocol supplied coffee tables, sofas and lounge armchairs that were furnished with loose scatter cushions, for that relaxed, at home feeling.

A grill with glorious views of the golf course. The Fairway Grill is the heart of Formby Hall’s foodie offering. It’s the perfect spot to sit back and soak up the atmosphere, a place
to hangout pre or post-golf, or a desirable destination to make memorable moments with friends and family. Plush, velvet fabrics and splashes of electric blue combined with grey and copper tones, create a cool and contemporary vibe. Sleek and stylish interiors that complement the fusion of local flavours found on the menu. Behind the scenes it’s the team's togetherness at The Fairway Grill that really makes the restaurant tick, an ethos that is driven by Head Chef, Tony Hargreaves. “You are only as good as the team behind you,” he says. “It is very rewarding to know that as a team, the kitchen and waiting staff have delivered the very best. As long as we can do that and keep our customers happy, the restaurant will continue to be a huge success.” Serving seasonal dishes and embracing local suppliers, The Fairway Grill takes Formby foodies on an all-day journey from breakfast through to lunch and dinner – with Formby favourites including indulgent afternoon tea and Sunday roasts thrown in for good measure. Savour towers of sweet treats for those treasured moments with loved ones, and hearty Sunday lunches for those lazy weekends away. A big, bright and airy space with views overlooking the 18th hole, the Grill is a great spot to start the day. The breakfast buffet offers eggs any style, hearty sausages, bacon, black pudding – and all the favourite morning munchies. The lunch menu brings British classics like fish and chips and the roast of the day to the table, while the evening menu offers sophistication with its tempting array of braised feather blade of beef, Mediterranean filo parcel or pan fried teriyaki salmon to name but a few.

The grill’s Sunday lunch is a Formby favourite to say the least. Guests can choose starters, mains and desserts from the vibrant menu which is changed to suit the seasons. Having said that, our most popular combinations inevitably entail the homemade soup followed by our classic roast chicken and Yorkshire puddings with sticky toffee pudding to finish. The full dining experience is delivered by fantastic food and wine pairings. As the Grill’s kitchen captain, Tony Hargreaves has watched the restaurant grow and evolve during his time at the helm. “Having been at Formby Hall for 20 years, I have grown with the resort and witnessed all of the changes in and around the hotel. “I have seen chefs make their mark on the menu, bringing in new food trends as they go.

“It’s great how much the staff here can influence the food offering. We can be creative, experiment with flavours and adapt to what might suit our diners.” Tony’s foodie journey started at a hotel in Southport some 29 years ago. “One of my kitchen colleagues heard about a new venture in Formby, so when I was 27, I applied for the chef de partie position, successfully got the job and the rest is history.” Tony is now part of the furniture at Formby Hall. Recognised by many regular guests and a friendly face around the resort, the restaurant is a warm and welcoming place for both guests and members of staff. For Tony, not only is Formby his place of work, but it’s also a place to relax with the family and enjoy at his own leisure. “When not working, I like to unwind with the family – often in Formby or in and around the resort. “Formby as an area has so much to offer, whether it be the pinewoods for a stroll or the squirrel reserve, which leads to Formby Point beach. It’s a very sought-after area and I’m extremely lucky to both live and work here.
“If I were to take a piece of Formby home with me it would have to be the pinewoods – a place I have spent so many enjoyable days walking with my wife and family.” Cooking for groups and delivering foodie masterclasses is something special for Tony. “My wife is a teacher, so when I’m not at work, I try to go into her school to cook with the pupils,” he says. “I think it’s important for youngsters to get hands-on experience in the kitchen, whether it’s for a potential career in the food and drinks industry, or whether it’s just for a bit of life experience.”

FORMBY FOLK
JOHN ASHCROFT R E S TA U R A N T YOUR ROLE? I work the breakfast service. So, it goes without saying, I’m a morning person! YOUR JOURNEY TO FORMBY? I’ve been here for five years now. I live two minutes down the road. Before this, I spent 40 years on the Mersey tugboats, and for 16 years lived and worked in Africa. My wife and I moved to Formby when I retired, but I wasn’t ready for my armchair and daytime TV. I spotted a job advert for this role in our local newspaper, so I put my suit on, came down here and I’ve been here ever since. A DAY IN THE LIFE… I cycle into work for a 6am start and my first job is to set up the restaurant ready for the breakfast service, making sure everything is in place for our first guests to arrive. As soon as chef has cooked the hot food, I bring it to the buffet still piping hot. I make sure the full range of juices and cereals is available throughout the service and I constantly keep an eye on our guests, checking that they are happy and have everything they need. After the service finishes, we clean up and leave things ready for the following morning. By 11.45am, my job is done and I am back on my bike home. WHAT MAKES YOU TICK? Activity. I like to keep busy. I have a 50/50 day because I’m busy in the morning and then I can relax for a bit before I figure out what I do next. AN INSIDER TIP... Formby is a great place to visit, it has so much to offer. My top tip is to visit the Pinewoods and Formby Beach. A nice walk along the red squirrel route then back to the resort for a hot chocolate. Or, like me, get on your bike and explore along the coast or pick up the Trans Pennine cycle route, doing the full 200 miles if you're up to it! Lots of our customers run the 1.5 miles of sandy beach, but even for me that may be a stretch too far! IF YOU COULD TAKE A PIECE OF FORMBY HALL HOME WITH YOU… The atmosphere. I meet and talk to a lot of people at breakfast and they all tell me that they’ve loved staying here because it’s such a pleasant place to be. And I agree, this really is a special place.

Twenty-four years ago, before greens, tees and fairways took centre stage, Formby Hall’s site was merely a vast area of farmland. A quiet spot that has flourished into the successful golf resort and spa it is today. “I remember a billboard going up in the field just off the dual-carriageway,” says Dave Shannon, President of Formby Hall Golf Club. “It said there was a new golf club coming to Formby, so my wife and I enquired about it straight away,” he adds. “It was an exciting new venture, but it was a bit of a

B I G M AC H I N E S A N D G LO R I O U S G R E E N S THE IDEAL OFFICE SET UP FOR FORMBY H A L L’ S H E A D GREENKEEPER, CHRIS REID
“For me, the great outdoors is the best office in the world,” says Chris Reid, Formby’s Hall's Head Greenkeeper.
“I’m so lucky that the majority of my working day is spent outside,” he adds. There’s a lot of responsibility with maintaining a Championship golf course, not to mention Formby Hall's second nine hole Woodhey Dunes course, the driving range and the green spaces that surround the resort. It’s a big task, but one that means hanging out on the glorious greens and keeping it all in good shape. “My job is to maintain the courses, the driving range and the short game area; as well as any green spaces around the hotel.” “After going through my apprenticeship with Formby Hall 13 years ago, I took on a full-time role here and have just moved up the ranks,” says Chris. Chris’s love of all things greenkeeping came from his fondness of the green game early in life. “My career stemmed from my love of golf,” he says. “I studied IT at college, but I played a lot of golf. When one of the lads that worked at my club broke his leg, I was asked to fill in for six weeks. “After that period, I got a feel for the job and went on to secure an apprenticeship at Formby Hall. I just thought, if I’m not going to be a professional golfer, then this is just another great way of looking at and being involved in the game. That was 13 years ago now, and the rest is history!” Getting out on the greens is as much of a lifestyle thing as it is a job for Chris. A day off means picking up his clubs and getting out and seeing the course from a different perspective. “The members often ask me to get involved and play with them when I get the chance,” says Chris. “It’s really nice that I can socialise in my place of work – I just can’t get enough of it,” he laughs. His working day, on the other hand, starts early, just as
