I’m going to be honest, writing my Jan/ Feb editor’s letter whilst still in the midst of the festivities is a tricky one.
As I’m sure many of you will agree, it’s hard to see past Christmas, and perhaps, sometimes we don’t want to.
But as I sit looking at a blank page trying to transport myself to the new year, I shift my perspective a little, looking at the content the team and I have pulled together for our first issue of 2025. The more I look ahead at the wonderfulness we’ve got to come this year, the more I see that joy doesn’t have to be something we only make a conscious effort to spread at Christmas time.
I always like to move away from the usual ‘fresh start, healthy habits’ themes that come in January; because each and every month of the year brings us an opportunity for a fresh start. What January should bring, for me, is a determination to do things the way you want to. So, in this edition, we’re celebrating wine bars instead of ‘Dry January’, we’re going big on food, and we’re starting as we mean to go on in all things art, culture, fashion, beauty, interiors, travel and more.
There’s so much to look forward to this year, and we’re starting with a vibrant issue, packing in everything from the region’s newest food plans to inspiring travel destinations, as well as thoughtful interviews with some of the most interesting and successful faces from our area.
We’re kicking off the year with expert advice, cultural highlights, and plenty of style to carry you through the cooler months. Whether it’s exploring new ways to live well or discovering hidden gems on the horizon, Luxe will be your guide to living it up in 2025.
Personally, I’m looking forward to keeping the pace a bit lighter this year, but also to celebrating the exciting moments ahead. There’s a lot on the horizon - new openings, fresh talent, and of course, all the wonderful things that make this region so special.
So let’s embrace what’s yet to come, but also honour the small moments that made 2024 unforgettable. Here’s to a year of growth, balance, and luxury in all the right places.

Below, Tanya shares some of her expert guidance to North East brides…
Q. I want to write my own vows, but public speaking terrifies me. Any tips on how to make it through?
First off, don’t put pressure on yourself to memorise your vows or recite them without help. Trust me, most people can barely remember their own name in such an emotional moment, so the chances of flawlessly recalling your vows are slim. Your registrar or celebrant can guide you through line by line if needed, or you can take your time and read them yourself (which I sense you might prefer).
Handwritten cue cards are an option, but in the heat of the moment, they might be hard to read. My advice? Print your vows instead - perhaps your stationer can help create a keepsake you’ll cherish, even if it ends up tear-soaked!
Don’t worry if you stumble; life isn’t scripted, and those little imperfections are what make the moment special and uniquely yours. One thing I can promise: when you’re standing at the end of that aisle, all you’ll see is your partner - everything else will fade into the background. Speak to them, not the room, and it will all unfold perfectly.
Q. My parents are no longer together, how do we navigate the top table scenario without upsetting anyone?
It sounds like there may be some tension here, or you wouldn’t be feeling stuck on this decision. If things are particularly strained, you have my sympathies - this is a tough spot to be in. Ultimately, you want to feel completely at ease on your wedding day, so it’s best to tackle any difficult conversations now.
Consider speaking to your parents separately to understand what would make them feel comfortable. If necessary, remind them about the importance of best behaviour for the sake of the day.
The good news? The traditional top table is no longer a must. Many couples are breaking away from convention and choosing what feels right for them. A top table made up of your closest friends is a popular choice, as is a sweetheart table with just the two of you.
This allows your parents to host their own tables - positioned on opposite sides of the room if needed.
If you’re looking to make a bold statement, long banquet-style tables are a stylish and trending option. Not only do they look fantastic, but they also help sidestep any potential family dynamics.
Q. What’s the best way to handle guests who don’t RSVP by the deadline?
Two words: pre-emptive strike! Your wedding coordinator will let you know the deadline for final numbers, so make your RSVP cutoff a few weeks earlier to give yourself some breathing room. This approach works well for the most part, but it’s not foolproof - you might still need to chase up some replies (we see you, evening guests!).
If the task feels overwhelming or you’re short on time, enlist your MOH or a helpful family member (mum or aunty, perhaps) to assist. When following up, keep the tone light and friendly—you don’t want to guilt-trip anyone.
A message like, ‘we know how hectic life gets! Just checking in to confirm your plans so we can finalize seating and catering arrangements’, should do the trick. Good luck - we know the struggle! And remember, we’re here to listen if you need to vent. Your secret’s safe with us.
Q. My sister wants to bring her new partner to our wedding, but we’ve never met. How do I handle this?
I completely understand - this is a tough decision. As planners, we usually recommend only inviting people you know personally. After all, no one wants to look back at wedding photos and wonder, who is that stranger? And we get it, weddings are expensive! That said... I’m with your sister on this one. Let me explain.
As someone who has often attended weddings solo, I can tell you they can feel quite isolating when you’re the only one without a partner by your side. For distant
cousins or work colleagues, a plus-one isn’t always expected, but for your sister, it’s about ensuring she has a great experience. If you’re worried about a stranger at your wedding, consider meeting her plus-one for dinner or drinks beforehand to break the ice. Who knows, while they may only last as long as the hangover, it could also be the beginning of something wonderful. Either way, it’s worth creating a memorable day for everyone involved.
Are you facing a wedding dilemma?

Expert Family Law And Divorce Advice From Irwin Mitchell
The New Year typically sees a rise in separations and divorce
The New Year is a time when many couples choose to take the next step in their lives and go their separate ways.
It can be a time of great upheaval and a recent survey by Irwin Mitchell shows the extent of change that people can expect post-divorce with 49 per cent of people moving house and a quarter of divorcees even seeking to move jobs.
This is why it is crucial to have the right support team in place to help you navigate through the divorce process, especially if
there are complex financial and property issues, or the best interests of children involved.
Last year the number one family law team in the Northeast, Silk Family Law, joined forces with full-service firm Irwin Mitchell bringing Silk’s existing expertise hand-in-hand with Irwin Mitchell’s wider private client, corporate and personal injury services, creating a unique offer to clients in the Northeast.
The North East family law team is led by Partners Ian Kennerley, Kim Fellowes, Wayne Lynn and Consultant Margaret Simpson who will continue to support their clients as the two firms combine.
The highly experienced team of 22 family law experts has an enviable reputation for dealing with all aspects of separation, divorce, civil partnerships, pre-nuptial agreements, and children issues. They’re specialists in dealing with complex financial issues, including business assets, farming businesses, trusts and pensions, as well as family law cases with an international element.
It’s also crucial that divorcees think about more than just their separation and consider other wealth protection tools such as an updated will and lasting power of attorney.
Ian Kennerley, Partner and head of the team, said: “Divorce can be a time of great uncertainty for couples and our job is to help guide them through the process as smoothly as possible. Some separations are amicable while others can be more hostile and it takes an experienced team to make sure you get the best possible result for you and your family.”
Irwin Mitchell and Silk’s combined family law team is one of the largest specialist teams in the country and is ranked number
one in several independent guides to the best lawyers including Legal 500, Chambers UK and Eprivateclient.
The team works from the Wellbar Central offices in Newcastle as well as a discreet office in Aske for clients in the North Yorkshire region.
Whatever their clients need, the team will support them and fight to protect their best interests. Irwin Mitchell has expert negotiators and mediators, able to help find an agreement that suits everyone, keeping disputes out of court where possible. If a case does have to go to court, the team is highly skilled to best support everyone involved. Irwin Mitchell has successfully taken family law cases all the way to the Supreme Court if needed, so you can trust that they have the right expertise to get the best outcome for their clients.

Rooted in hope
How the iconic Sycamore Gap lives on through a legacy of renewal and community, including a special sapling for the North East Autism Society
The Sycamore Gap tree, felled in an act that shocked the country, left behind more than just an empty spot on the landscape of Hadrian’s Wall. It left a void in the hearts of those who cherished its beauty and a determination to create something meaningful from its loss.
The National Trust’s ‘Trees of Hope’ campaign aims to do just that - by gifting 49 saplings grown from its seeds to people and communities across the UK. Among the lucky recipients is the North East Autism Society (NEAS), who will plant their ‘Tree of Hope’ at New Warlands Farm in County Durham.
The National Trust received nearly 500 heartfelt applications for one of the 49 saplings grown from the tree’s seeds - a testament to the emotional connection so many felt when the tree was felled in September 2023.
Andrew Poad, General Manager for the National Trust’s Hadrian Wall properties, spoke of the overwhelming response: “Each and every application for a ‘Tree of Hope’ told heartfelt stories of people’s
The saplings will be ready to plant in winter 2025/26. From schools to community groups, each recipient will become part of the Sycamore Gap’s enduring legacy
emotional connections to the Sycamore Gap tree and the importance of nature. They spoke of loss, hope, and regeneration from all corners of the UK.”
The saplings, currently being nurtured at the National Trust’s Plant Conservation Centre, will be ready to plant in winter 2025/26.
From schools to community groups, each recipient will become part of the Sycamore Gap’s enduring legacy.
For NEAS, the sapling represents far more than a tree - it is a powerful symbol of inclusion, growth, and the promise of a better future. The charity’s New Warlands Farm, a 77-acre site in Durham, is being developed into a visitor centre and regenerative working farm with a focus on creating opportunities for autistic and neurodivergent individuals. Planting this sapling at the farm underscores the charity’s mission to foster connections between people, nature, and community.
“We’re delighted and honoured to be chosen as a recipient of a ‘Tree of Hope’ sapling,” said John Phillipson, CEO of NEAS.
“This sapling, from a beloved North East landmark, will represent a symbol of hope and a positive future to our visitors.”
NEAS has long held a connection to Sycamore Gap. The iconic tree served as a focal point for fundraising treks and was even featured in a painting that raised funds for the charity’s work. Now, the sapling will stand as a living tribute to that bond, offering a space for reflection and inspiration for years to come.
The NEAS sapling is just one of many stories of hope woven into this initiative. Other recipients include The Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease in Leeds, which will plant its sapling in a garden designed to bring comfort and solace to patients and families. Holly’s Hope, in partnership with Hexham Abbey, will plant a tree to honour Holly Newton, a 15-year-old whose tragic death inspired her family to advocate for safer relationships among young people. In Coventry, The Tree Sanctuary and its ‘Tree
Amigos’ will use their sapling to educate young people about the importance of respecting and nurturing nature.
Each sapling represents more than a tree; it is a vessel for stories, resilience, and renewal. Catherine Nuttgens, an arboriculture specialist and independent judge for the initiative, reflected on the emotional weight of the project:
“The loss of any tree can evoke strong emotions - none more so than the Sycamore Gap tree. Its destruction felt utterly senseless. But the ‘Trees of Hope’ initiative has kept that sense of joy and hope alive.”
As New Warlands Farm prepares to welcome its Sycamore Gap sapling, the NEAS community looks forward to watching it grow alongside their vision of an inclusive future. The farm’s emphasis on regenerative agriculture and autism-friendly spaces makes it the perfect home for such a special tree. It will serve as a reminder of how loss can be transformed into growth and how nature continues to connect us all.
For the National Trust, the ‘Trees of Hope’ initiative is not just about planting trees; it’s about planting ideas, emotions, and possibilities. As Andrew Poad summed up:
“The tree meant so much to so many, and through the ‘Trees of Hope’ initiative, we are helping reach people across the nation for generations to come.”
Whether it’s at New Warlands Farm or the many other locations across the UK, these saplings will flourish into symbols of resilience, regeneration, and renewal. The iconic Sycamore Gap tree may be gone, but its spirit is taking root in communities far and wide.

guide to her latest craft projects...

Leaf Canvas
You will need...
Pencil
Canvas
Glue gun
Glue sticks
Gold metallic spray paint
To make…
Take a pencil and draw out your design onto the canvas. I chose a leaf pattern which was really simple to sketch out, and I placed them in different directions onto the canvas. Take your glue gun and plug it in to heat up. Trace over the design with the hot glue then set aside to dry.
When the glue has cooled and set, tidy up any excess strings of glue that may be left behind.
Take the canvas outside or to a wellventilated area and spray it with some gold metallic paint.
Set aside to dry and hang it proudly in your home!
You will need...
Coloured paper
Scissors
Collall tacky glue (or an alternative strong tacky glue)
Twine
Hot glue gun
To make…
Draw out a heart on some coloured paper with a pencil and then use this as a template to create 12 hearts in total.
Take one of the hearts and fold in half, open out the heart then make another two folds to create a cross. To do this, I took the bottom of the heart and folded it up towards the left hand side and, once I had it sitting against the side of the heart I created the fold line, opened it out and repeated on the other side. When the heart is opened out you should have 6 sections and there should be a defined ‘X’ shape across the body of the heart.
Repeat the previous steps above on the other 11 hearts. When the fold lines are all in place, take one of the hearts and fold it in half down the middle and add a little glue on the top and bottom sections. Then, take another heart which has been folded in half and stick this on top.
Repeat this process with all of the other hearts so they are all stuck together.
When all of the hearts are stacked together, open the top heart and add a dot of tacky glue in the middle section this time. Repeat this process on each heart until you get to the end. When adding glue to the last piece, open the heart completely to make the 3D honeycomb shape.
To finish, cut a length of twine and fold it in half to create a hanging. Add some hot glue onto the end pieces and then press it into the hole at the top of the heart.

Morning has broken
Tom Newhouse is a Leeds-based artist who spent three years capturing every sunrise of 2021 in 365 breathtaking oil paintings. Elysia Fryer checks in to talk about Tom’s lifechanging project, the North East landscapes that inspired him, and why there’s magic in witnessing the dawn
There’s no doubt about it, there’s something magical about a sunrise. Nature’s daily masterpiece, fleeting and intimate. For me, sunrise has always been a surreal experience - like stealing a moment ahead of the rush of life. It’s that feeling of standing on a quiet beach or a hilltop, soaking in a horizon, and feeling like you’re seeing something no one else is.
When I first heard about Tom Newhouse and his 365 project, I was instantly intrigued. A collection of 365 oil paintings, each capturing the colours of each and every sunrise in 2021, created from his experiences across the North East and Yorkshire. This isn’t just art, it’s devotion. I’m catching up with Tom to talk about his journey, and it’s clear that 365 is much more than just a collection of paintings. It’s a story of transformation, of stepping away from the noise of modern life and reconnecting with something profound.
“I’ll be honest,” Tom begins, laughing.
“When I started this project, I had no idea what I was signing up for. I was 23, fresh out of Leeds Arts University, and I wanted to challenge myself. I’d been working on a project about the isolating aspects of technology, and I knew I needed to do something completely different - to unplug and reconnect with nature.”
Starting in January 2021, Tom committed to watching and documenting every single
sunrise for an entire year. A new year’s resolution, and then some! No matter the weather, the location, or the time of year, he was there, standing at the cusp of daybreak.
“It wasn’t just about seeing the sunrise,” he explains.
“It was about experiencing it, immersing myself in it, and translating that into something tangible.
“For the first four months, I didn’t even have a car,” he says.
“I was on foot, walking up to 30,000 steps every morning, chasing the light. Later, I got a car, which meant I could venture further - coastal spots in the North East like Redcar and Whitby, or wild, remote areas in the Yorkshire Dales.”
Tom’s sunrise ritual was meticulous. Armed with retro film cameras and a painter’s eye, he captured the essence of each dawn in real-time.
“I’d use my knowledge of oil paints to document the colours as they unfolded. Then, back in the studio, I’d translate those notes into paintings.”
It took him three years to complete all 365 pieces.
“I underestimated how much work it would be,” he admits.
“But the daily practice changed me. There’s something about showing up every single day - no matter how grey or miserable the weather - that builds resilience. When those breathtaking moments did happen, they felt euphoric, like a reward for the effort.”
Tom lights up as he recounts one particularly unforgettable sunrise.
“I was on top of a huge hill, and below me in the valley was this ocean of clouds. It was surreal - like standing on the edge of the world. Those moments made every cold, wet, early morning worth it.”
While sunsets often steal the limelight, Tom argues that sunrises hold a unique magic.
“Everyone sees the sunset,” he says, when
asked why he chose to capture the sunrise over sunset.
“A sunrise is an inconvenience for most people,” he continues.
“You have to wake up early, battle the elements, and sacrifice sleep. But that’s what makes them so special. When you’re out there, watching the world wake up, you feel like you’ve got one over on everyone else. It’s like you’re in on a secret.”
I share my own recent sunrise experience at Captain Cook’s Monument, Great Ayton. The silence, the solitude - it was almost sneaky, like I was stealing time. Tom nods in agreement.
“Exactly! I used to feel that driving back after a sunrise, passing cars on the motorway during rush hour. I’d think, ‘you’ve no idea what I’ve just witnessed!’ It’s a wonderful feeling.
“There were definitely a few mornings that were absolutely incredible - real tear jerkers! Especially very early mornings in the summer, when there’s not a soul in sight out in the countryside.”
For Tom, the landscapes of the North East and Yorkshire were as much a part of 365 as the sunrises themselves.
“The North East was the heart of the project,” he says.
“Redcar, Whitby, Saltwick Bay - and then some Yorkshire spots closer to my home in Leeds, like Ilkley Moor, Almscliffe Cragthey’re all so different, yet equally beautiful. I didn’t plan my locations in advance; I just followed my intuition.”
The spontaneity paid off, resulting in a diverse collection of paintings that capture not only the colours of the sky but the spirit of the places he visited.
Beyond the art, 365 became a journey of self-discovery for Tom.
“When I started, I was just a kid who wanted to connect with nature,” he reflects.
“But by the end, I’d developed a deep spiritual connection with the world around me. It has changed how I see myself, my work, and my purpose. I’m a different person now.”
That transformation is something Tom would like to share with others through this project, which he plans will be shared as an
exhibition in the coming months and years.
“I want people to experience the project in its entirety,” he says.
“The plan is to create a 360-degree installation where viewers can walk through the paintings like a journey, alongside a documentary film that brings the adventure to life.”
For now, Tom is focused on editing the 365 film and preparing for exhibition.
“This year has felt like a long breakup with the project,” he admits.
“After three years of total immersion, it’s strange not to have it consuming my every waking moment. But I’m excited to take the next step and share it with the world.”
As we wrap up our conversation, I can’t help but feel inspired by Tom’s story. 365 is a reminder of the power of slowing down, of
noticing the beauty in the everyday, and of the incredible things we can achieve when we dedicate ourselves to something wholeheartedly.
Tom’s sunrises might have been fleeting, but their impact is timeless - a gift not just to him, but to all of us lucky enough to see them.

Northern light
Elysia Fryer catches up with Kim McGuinness, the North East’s trailblazing Mayor, who’s redefining politics with her down-to-earth charm, bold ambitions, and deep love for the region she calls home
Kim McGuinness greets me with a warm smile as we juggle diaries for a catch-up over a virtual cuppa in the midst of the Christmas rush.
“It’s very lovely of you to reach out and have me on your cover. Thank you!” she starts, as we share our love for the North East and our favourite places to explore.
Her story is one of grit, grace, and a deep-seated love for the region she calls home. Born and raised in Newbiggin Hall on Newcastle’s west end, Kim grew up in a working-class household where the values of community and resilience were instilled from a young age.
It’s these roots that shaped her unwavering dedication to the North East and her vision for a brighter future.
“My early years have definitely shaped the agenda I have now, and the fact that I very much love this place. I have a real passion for the region, and I want it to be even better than it already is,” she explains.
“I genuinely think it is the best place in the
world, but at the same time, I recognise that some of the challenges that were there when I grew up - persistent child poverty and access to opportunity - are still an issue today. That’s been one of the things that’s really driven me.”
Kim’s life reads like a roadmap for turning local pride into impactful change. Educated in state schools, she was the first in her family to go to university, graduating from Newcastle University. After graduation, she built a career spanning the private sector, education, and charitable organisations. Yet, politics wasn’t initially on her radar.
“I never had any intention of standing for election. I came back to the region in 2013 after living away for work, and I got involved in the Labour Party because I saw the coalition government closing down the things that were important to me growing up - the libraries and the community centres, for example. So I did a bit of door-knocking with my local MP, and eventually, she said to me, ‘You should stand for council.’ And I said, ‘No, there’s absolutely no way - I can’t do that!’”
Persistence, however, has a funny way of changing destinies. Encouraged by her MP and buoyed by the assurance that her lived experience made her uniquely qualified, Kim finally said yes.
“She told me that they needed people with real-world experience, with a real job and a real life,” Kim recalls.
“She came back again and I still said no, but I’d maybe consider it in a few years’ time. Eventually, she came and said, ‘We need you to do this!’”
That nudge transformed Kim’s trajectory.
“And I think that is a common story with women in these kinds of roles. I was 29 at the time.
“Of course, imposter syndrome sets in, but I took the leap and I’ve never looked back. Unfortunately, there’s definitely an image of what councils and politicians look like, and that’s something that we need to change. We have made some progress in that, I think. I’m always very conscious that we have to tap talented people on the shoulder and say, ‘You are really great - you should do it!’
“I was lucky enough that that happened for me, and I went with it.”
Kim’s rise through the political ranks has been nothing short of meteoric. In 2019, she was elected as the first woman to hold the office of Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner, where she championed community safety initiatives and worked tirelessly to tackle issues like domestic abuse and youth crime. Now, as Mayor of >>

the North East, she’s breaking new ground again, leading a deal that promises to transform the region’s economy and opportunities.
“For me, it’s about creating something that doesn’t just improve the here and now, but builds a legacy. It’s about making sure the next generation has the opportunities we didn’t have,” she says.
Under her leadership, the North East is set to benefit from a game-changing deal that promises to bring significant investment in transport, housing, and skills - with the aim of levelling up the region and closing the gap between the north and the south.
“It’s about making sure that the North East is no longer an afterthought,” she says.
“We have so much potential here - our people, our industries, our culture. This deal gives us the chance to harness that and really put the region on the map.”
Kim’s vision for the North East is as ambitious as it is inclusive. She speaks passionately about creating a region where everyone, regardless of background, can thrive.
“When I think about what success looks like, it’s not just about economic growth or new infrastructure - it’s about people. It’s about making sure we can create opportunities for young people.”
Leading a region through transformative change is no easy task, and Kim is no stranger to the challenges that come with the job.
“It’s a huge responsibility, and there are days when it feels overwhelming,” she admits.
“But at the same time, it’s incredibly rewarding, when you see the impact of what you’re doing.”
Kim credits her ability to navigate the demands of leadership to the support of her family and her own inner drive. She also makes a point of prioritising her own wellbeing, recognising that self-care is essential for sustaining the energy and
focus required to lead effectively.
“I try to carve out time for myself, whether it’s going for a walk or just having a quiet moment to reflect.”
As our conversation winds down, I ask Kim about the places she enjoys when she’s not busy with her political work. Her eyes light up as she shares her love for the North East’s landscapes and local spots.
“I’m a pretty terrible workaholic, but I have my dogs - Errol and Iris - who are definitely Insta-famous!” she laughs.
“We love the countryside, the beaches in particular, right up and down the whole coast. We are completely spoilt for choice, from County Durham, all the way up to the Borders. I can quite often be found on a Sunday on one of those beaches, with two absolutely mad dogs.”
Kim also has a deep appreciation for the local culture and food.
“I really enjoy cooking and learning new recipes and methods. I just wish I had more time for it.
“My local is The Northumberland Arms. Other favourite places include The Fire Station in Sunderland - one of my favourite venues - and The Glass House in Gateshead.
I love live music. I grew up singing and playing musical instruments, so that has certainly filtered through into that desire to bring culture into what we are doing economically. I think, without those opportunities as a kid, I wouldn’t ever be doing what I’m doing now.
“I’m generally very happy being at home and exploring the coastline. It gives me a lot of pleasure and I just think it’s very good for the soul. We are so lucky.”
As we wrap up our chat, I’m left with the sense that Kim McGuinness is a real force for change - someone who understands the heartbeat of her community and is determined to make it stronger.

IN CONVERSATION WITH…
A Kate Fearnley bride
Kate Fearnley was the creative brains behind Nina Smith’s prom dress. Ten years later, Nina turned to Kate to design her wedding dress. Elysia Fryer sits down with the pair to find out how a dream dress is brought to life in Kate’s studio
When Nina Smith, a local nurse, walked into Kate Fearnley’s Stokesley studio to begin her journey of creating the perfect wedding dress, she was no stranger to the designer’s work.
Kate had designed her prom dress a decade ago. But as the months went by, Nina’s experience would evolve into something far more special - a full circle moment, as Nina describes it, where a cherished connection from her teenage years would transform into a life-changing bridal experience.
ELYSIA: Nina, let's start with you. Tell us a little about yourself and your wedding day?
NINA: I’m a nurse, and my husband Remmy is a farmer. We’ve been together for 10 years now. Remmy proposed in July 2023, but we hadn’t really started planning anything. We’d already booked a one-way flight to go travelling around Southeast Asia, so we decided we’d like to get married before we left. It would be nice to celebrate with our family and friends before heading off. We tied the knot on Friday 2 August 2024, and then we were off on our travels by the Monday! We had a small ceremony at Middlesbrough Town Hall, followed by a big reception to celebrate with everyone.
ELYSIA: And Kate, how does it feel when a bride chooses you for such a personal project?
KATE: It’s always incredibly rewarding. I believe the dress-making process is a journey we take together. It’s not just about creating a beautiful gown - it’s about creating something that feels truly special for the bride. There’s a connection that builds as we share ideas, make adjustments, and bring everything to life. And when I see their faces light up when they put on the final dress? It’s priceless.
ELYSIA: Nina, I know you’ve worked with Kate before. How did that influence your decision to go back to her for your wedding dress?
NINA: Oh, it’s all about the experience.
Back in 2014,
Kate made prom dresses for me and my sister, and we loved the entire process. Then in 2021, Kate made my sister-in-law’s wedding dress. When Remmy and I decided to get married, I didn’t think twice about who would make my dress - it was always going to be Kate. My sister Phoebe and I used to joke that it would be amazing if one day we went back to Kate for our wedding dresses. It really was a full circle moment!
ELYSIA: Nina, what was the brief?
NINA: To be honest, I didn’t have much of an idea at the start! I knew I wanted something simple and elegant, but that was it. We played around with different ideas, fabrics, and silhouettes, and eventually found something that felt perfect for me.
ELYSIA: Kate, can you tell us how Nina described her dream dress to you? Was there a specific vision?
KATE: Nina came in with a rough idea - she knew she wanted something stylish, but not too fussy. We started by trying different looks from our collections and gradually began to piece things together. Then, Nina spotted a frilled tulle skirt behind her and said, “That would make a gorgeous veil.” It was such a lightbulb moment! We tried it on, and the veil idea just worked. Within an hour, we had the sketch ready, and Nina could see the vision come to life. We then refined the details over a few fittings, making sure everything was perfect.
ELYSIA: It sounds like a collaborative process. Nina, were there any challenges along the way?
NINA: Not really! I loved the process. I didn’t know exactly what I wanted at first, but Kate’s patience and guidance made everything so easy. She made me feel so involved in the whole thing. There was never any pressure, and we took our time to get it right.
I believe the dress-making process is a journey we take together. It’s about creating something that feels truly special for the bride
ELYSIA: That’s the magic of working with a local designer like Kate. Kate, how does it feel to work with brides like Nina, especially those who have returned to you after years?
KATE: It’s so
special to have Nina come back to me after all these years. It’s like working with an old friend, and hearing Nina say she came back because of the experience we shared all those years ago? It’s an honour.
ELYSIA: Kate, you've expanded your brand to national boutiques, but why is it so important for you to maintain your studio here in the North East?
KATE: For me, it’s about being able to connect with local brides. Even though we stock in boutiques across the country, my studio in Stokesley remains a hub for the local community. I feel a deep sense of pride knowing that people are supporting British-made, sustainable products,
especially in the North East. It’s an ongoing privilege to be part of our region’s wedding scene.
ELYSIA: Nina, how does it feel to be able to tell your guests that your dress is from a local designer?
NINA: It feels amazing! I’ve had so many lovely comments about my dress, and I was so proud to share that Kate made it for me. It’s lovely knowing that people are becoming more conscious about supporting local businesses. One of my friends has already booked in with Kate for her wedding dress next year.
KATE: That’s the best part. When a bride shares their story and their dress with
others, it’s like the dress keeps living on through each new person who chooses it. When I saw Nina’s wedding photos, I was absolutely thrilled. She looked stunning, and her dress was a true reflection of her personality and her day.
ELYSIA: Kate, you mentioned that it’s all about creating an experience for the bride. What makes the Kate Fearnley experience so unique?
KATE: It’s all about personal connection. Brides who come to us are looking for something more than just a dress - they want an experience, a relationship with the person making their dress. It’s about being involved in the process, having the dress made just for them, and knowing it’s something unique. In a world where everything is mass-produced, we’re all about quality, sustainability, and creating something personal and lasting.
ELYSIA: Nina, do you have any plans for your dress in the future?
NINA: Actually, yes! I’ve been thinking about
cutting the length down and turning it into a mini dress for something special like an anniversary celebration.
ELYSIA: Kate, where do you see the future of your business heading?
KATE: I’m excited to continue creating beautiful, bespoke gowns that make women feel their very best. We’re expanding our bridal collections, but we will always stay true to our roots in North Yorkshire. We want every bride who works with us to feel like they’re part of something truly special. After all, your day, your dress, and your moment should be one of a kind.
Kate Fearnley’s philosophy shines through in every dress she creates - personal, sustainable, and crafted with love. From prom dress to wedding gown, Nina’s journey with Kate is a testament to the timeless nature of bespoke design and the lasting bond between a bride and her dress maker.

Time to go big
Brace yourself, the 80s are back! Well, curls are at least (not shell suits thankfully!). In 2025, they’re making a comeback and this time they mean business
This isn’t just a nostalgic nod - 80s-inspired curls are bigger, bouncier, and more rebellious than ever. It’s giving strong, confident and sassy!
Volume is the name of the game, with disrupted curls and tousled waves stealing the spotlight, reimagined with softer textures and natural finishes.
Is the perm back? It may well be - everything comes back around eventually. But fear not, if a less permanent option is more appealing, we’re here to help.
Heated curling tools are better than ever, making it incredibly easy to create showstopping looks at the drop of a hat. If, however, you have some natural curls or waves, curl enhancing creams and a good old diffuser (attachment for your hair dryer, for those too young to remember) will help you to create a truly authentic look.
Celebrities like Zendaya and Jade Thirlwall are already embracing the 80s-trend, leading the way and doing it to perfection.
80s inspired curls aren’t just a hairstyle, they’re a declaration of confidence and individuality. Whether you opt for a natural look or an over-styled wow moment, this trend proves that bold is beautiful, and big hair is here to stay.

Your breakthrough year
Meet Sarah Pike: Luxe’s break-up and divorce coach…
When life throws you a curveball, like a break-up or divorce, Sarah Pike believes it doesn’t have to be the end of your story.
“Divorce is traumatic,” she says. “But it can also be hugely transformational.”
With her expertise and trademark ‘no-nonsense but smothered-with-care’ approach, Sarah is here to help Luxe readers navigate one of life’s toughest challenges - whether you’re going through it yourself, or you’re supporting a loved one.
As someone who’s walked the walk - surviving domestic, narcissistic, and financial abuse, as well as her own divorce - Sarah knows the emotional toll separation takes. Recently experiencing a second break-up herself, she empathises deeply with her clients.
Sarah’s goal? To help others rewrite their narrative, turning heartbreak into a stepping stone for transformation.
Why Luxe, why now?
“Luxe has been my favourite magazine since moving back to the North East from London 10 years ago,” Sarah says.
“When Elysia got in touch and asked me to write something for Luxe, I was speechless - and that doesn’t happen often!”
So, what can we expect from Sarah’s column?
Practical tips on everything from surviving social events to preparing for mediation or court appearances. Her aim is to demystify the process, offer strategies, and remind you that it’s ok not to be ok.
Coaching vs counselling
If you’re wondering how coaching differs from traditional therapy, Sarah explains: “My clients come to me because they want to move forward but feel stuck. Unlike therapy, which delves into past experiences, coaching focuses on helping you navigate the present and design your future.”
Sarah provides a judgement-free space to explore emotions, make
sense of a situation, and find practical solutions. Family and friends, though well-meaning, often struggle to offer impartial advice, which is where Sarah’s expertise comes in.
Support not stigma
Divorce is the second most traumatic life event, second only to the loss of a loved one. Yet, as Sarah points out, there’s a lack of readily available support.
“It’s bonkers that more people aren’t trained to help in this area,” she says. That’s why she’s passionate about sharing tools and advice for those facing this journey.
Whether you’re ugly-crying into your pillow or trying to stay composed in a courtroom, Sarah’s got your back. From letting go of bottled-up emotions, to tackling tricky conversations, her tips are designed to help you move forward with strength and clarity.
Transformation awaits
“You might feel like your world has ended,” Sarah acknowledges.
“But this is also where transformation begins. The person you become can be unrecognisable from the person you are today.”
Her advice? Let yourself feel your emotions fully, but don’t let them define you.
“You’re allowed to be sad, angry, confused, or numb. Give yourself permission to grieve, but know you’re also capable of creating a new life.”
Get involved
Sarah’s column is here to answer your burning questions. Got something on your mind? Send your queries to contact@sarahpikecoaching.com or @sarahpikecoaching001 on Instagram, and she’ll address them in an upcoming issue.
When Sarah’s not coaching, you’ll find her indulging in jam donuts (her guilty pleasure!) or planning her new podcast with dating and relationship expert Lara Lee Caine, launching this summer. Divorce doesn’t have to define you. With Sarah Pike in your corner, it’s the beginning of a brighter, stronger chapter.
Braving the icy waves of Saltburn, Elysia Fryer discovers the transformative power of sea dipping and sauna therapy - a bold reset for body and soul, and the ultimate winter reboot…
It’s a wild December morning, Storm Darragh building, and I’m questioning my decisions as I swap cosy Christmas pyjamas for a swimsuit and head for the coast. By the time I arrive in Saltburn for my first ever sea dip experience with Whitby Wellbeing, the sky is an ominous shade of grey, the wind is picking up and the waves are crashing against the shore.
The brisk wind and horizontal rain cutting through my not-so-waterproof coat, the weather forecast was less than reassuring, and I wasn’t so sure about stripping down to my swimming costume. It’s 10am on a Saturday morning and on the usually-busy Saltburn beach, there are barely any dog walkers in sight.
The friendly folk at Whitby Wellbeing are all about reconnecting people to the environment, and in doing so, themselves. The team loves nothing more than the natural environment that surrounds us,
Cold awakening
namely the Yorkshire coast, hills and moorland.
So, with that in mind, Daniel O’Connor set up Whitby Wellbeing to bring a balance of vitality and peace through adventure-fuelled experience - one being the wild saunas.
The Wild Trailer Sauna is a sanctuary of warmth, waiting in the wings after an invigorating cold plunge in the North Sea.
The wood-fired sauna is set up just a stone’s throw from the waves, inviting us to find a newfound connection to nature through the magic of hot and cold therapy, where relaxation meets rejuvenation.
I’ve always been drawn to the sea - its vastness, its power, and its grounding presence. But cold water therapy, a trend that has gained serious momentum in recent years, was something new to me. The science behind it is compelling. Immersing yourself in cold water is believed to stimulate blood circulation, boost the immune system, reduce inflammation, and even enhance mood by releasing those ‘happy hormones’.
There’s something about the sea that makes it unlike any other form of cold exposure. Perhaps it’s the salt water, the mysterious nature of the waves, or simply the connection many of us have with the ocean, for whatever reason.
Stepping into the cold water - especially in the depths of winter - is a bit like waking up from a long, comfortable sleep. The state of shock, the rush of adrenaline, and the opportunity to share the experience with likeminded (or just as crazy!) individuals. It’s as much about community as it is about physical wellbeing.
Storm Darragh certainly wasn’t going to make it any easier. The wind is whipping, the rain coming in sideways, and the sea determined to make this experience as invigorating as possible. But there’s something incredibly cathartic about surrendering yourself to the elements. As my feet navigate over the rocky shoreline and my toes hit the cold water, the shock to the system feels like a reset button being hit. After a few minutes, I make my way to the
waiting sauna for what I can only describe as pure bliss. The heat from the wood fire feels like a great big hug; and this is where the magic really happens. The transition between the freezing sea and the warm sauna is the ultimate contrast - yin and yang. Alternating between the two helps to regulate the body’s temperature, boosts circulation, and encourages detoxification. The sauna’s intense warmth flushes the body with blood, while the cold water
immersion tightens the skin, stimulating the nervous system and revving up the metabolism. Getting a tiny bit braver each time I return to the sea to dip, before long I’m immersing my full body in the water. It’s a challenge you can’t help but surrender too. I notice a shift in my mood almost immediately. The dark clouds, the biting wind, and the chilly sea become less important. It’s hard to put into words, but the jump between hot and cold feels like a really good recharging of the body’s batteries.
The cold water, harsh as it may be, forces you to focus and to live in the present moment. No distractions, no phone, just you and the elements. In an age when we’re constantly plugged in, this is something invaluable - a chance to disconnect and reset, even if just for a few minutes. And the benefits extend well beyond the physical. Sea dipping and sauna therapy are increasingly being linked to improved mental health, too. Regular cold-water immersion can alleviate stress, reduce anxiety, and improve overall mood. I can certainly feel my mood lifting after each dip - the buzz of endorphins making the cold seem just a little bit warmer.
What I wasn’t expecting during this experience was to be so well educated on the how and why. I’m leaving with a whole
new outlook on hot and cold therapy, with ways in which I can now bring this into my daily practice. Cold exposure can be a powerful tool for managing stress and increasing resilience, each and every day. If I can roll out my yoga mat and meditate before bed, why can’t I incorporate hot and cold therapy into my day?
Whether it’s a brisk dip in the sea or a quick shower with cold water at home, the shock to the system helps train your body to better cope with stress, both physical and mental. Plus, cold water immersion strengthens the immune system and promotes deeper sleep. Whitby Wellbeing has perfected the balance between comfort and adventure. The Wild Trailer Sauna is unlike anything I’ve tried before. Simple yet incredibly stimulatingit’s cosy, intimate, and designed with just the right amount of rustic charm. Pampering, but with a twist. A twist that many people will be scared of, but I assure you not to be! If you’re looking for a unique way to boost your physical health, reconnect with nature, and experience the true magic of our coastline, I can’t recommend Whitby Wellbeing’s Wild Trailer Sauna experience highly enough. It’s a perfect start to the new year - bold, invigorating, and completely transformative.

Wholesome Hexham catch-ups, filling the 2025 diary and spicing vegetables up for winter, Chris has got our food world covered
MY WORLD >>
A biggie pre-Christmas was the BBC Good Food Show at the NEC in Birmingham back in November. It went very well - I was cooking on stage, alongside other chefs such as James Martin, Gennaro Contaldo, Nadiya Hussain - tons of big names and fabulous demonstrations. It’s all round good fun. I was back up north for Christmas, catching up with friends. I caught up with Robsonit’s always great to see him back home. Because I don’t work in a restaurant, December is nice for me. I get to catch up with people and enjoy the experiences that come with Christmas - plenty of events at friend’s restaurants, and just being out and about. A highlight for me this year was the Christmas at Kew light show. As well as, of course, spending time with family back in Hexham, eating too much and having a good time!
FOODIE HAPPENINGS >>
Something I’m working on for 2025 is to have my own menu in partnership with a five star hotel in London. I can’t say much more than that just now, but it’s something I’ve been working on for some time, and it’s looking like it will come into fruition in the spring. It will all be focused around healthy, fresh food, heavily aligned with the seasons. It’s a great fit with my passion for health and wellness along with great food and seasonal ingredients.
Hopefully I’ll be working with Aston Martin again on cooking at their car launches, and continuing to work with HexClad and growing that business. With my love for home cooking, it’s wonderful to work with a brand like HexClad, inspiring people to improve their cooking at home.
ASK CHRIS >>
Coming up, we’ve got the Robson Green TV show about my life in Hexham. I really can’t wait to watch it back - the producers are saying it’s looking really good. Of course, I’m in London, but home is where the heart is and Hexham will always have a place in my heart, so I’m really excited to get that across in the show.
INSPIRED BY THE SEASONS >>
I say this every year, but things like sprouts are really at their best at this time of yearthey’re not just for Christmas! Whether you want to toss them with a bit of sesame oil, honey and miso and roast them in the oven, or add them into stirfries. Butternut squash is also a great one - I recently shared my recipe for butternut squash fritters with a poached egg, goat’s cheese, rosemary and garlic. You can still use these wintry vegetables but in a fresh new way. In January, I tend to cook a lot with spice, just to move away from the richness of festive food. Seasonal vegetables and spice is where it’s at for me.
For a healthy breakfast, I did another thing recently, which was an apple crumble topping with whizzed up oats and walnuts with a touch of honey to bind it together. I slowly cooked the apples, scattered over the topping and that was it - with a dollop of yoghurt. It’s warm, it’s comforting, but it’s using British apples, oats, nuts - it’s really good for you - and a bit different, too.
If you have any questions you want to ask Chris, please get in touch via his Instagram page. Chris will select a question and answer it in the next column. #AskChris
Q: As a foodie looking at travel plans for 2025, where would you recommend and why?
A: I would say the South of France. It’s somewhere I had never been, but two years consecutively I’ve found myself there either working or on holiday, and in terms of the foodie culture it’s all about the quality of ingredients, which is massive. There’s something for everyone. I went in the summer and stayed half an hour from the coast near a town called Valbonne, and the food was just superb. From the small towns, to the resorts like Cannes, you can either go high-end or book an Airbnb and cook yourself using local produce from markets. It’s not somewhere I had ever thought about exploring, and I was totally blown away.
TRY
Winter Citrus and Burrata Salad with Candied Pine Nuts
Try this vibrant wintry salad
Ingredients
1 ½ lb citrus fruit, such as navel orange, mandarin, cara cara oranges, blood oranges and pink or red grapefruits
¼ cup pine nuts
2 ½ tsp sugar, divided
2 tbsp plus 1 tsp extra-virgin olive oil
Flaky sea salt
1 small green endive, core removed, leaves pulled apart
1 cup radicchio leaves, torn into 1 to 2 inch pieces
⅓ cup packed fresh mint leaves, plus 1 tbsp finely chopped leaves
1 (8 oz) piece burrata cheese
1 tbsp sherry vinegar
1 tsp grainy mustard
Flakey sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to season
Method
Using a microplane, zest ½ teaspoon orange zest from one of the pieces of citrus. In a pan, combine pine nuts, 2 teaspoons of the sugar, and 1 teaspoon of the oil. Place pan over medium heat and cook, stirring, until pine nuts and sugar start to turn golden, 3 to 4 minutes. Remove from the heat, stir in the orange zest, and scrape nut mixture and any juices onto a heatproof plate. Sprinkle with flaky sea salt and let cool completely.
Remove peel and pith from citrus fruit using a sharp knife; discard pith and peel. Slice fruit crosswise into thin pieces and arrange on a small serving plate with endive, radicchio, and mint leaves. Nestle the burrata into the salad.
In a medium bowl, whisk vinegar, mustard, and remaining ½ teaspoon of sugar until combined. While whisking, slowly add remaining 2 tablespoons of oil until fully combined. Stir in chopped mint and season with salt and pepper.
Slice burrata cheese in half and drizzle dressing over the entire salad. Sprinkle with flaky sea salt and pepper and serve.

Cal Byerley chef-owner of Michelin-starred and Michelin Green-starred Restaurant Pine along with Pine’s head chef Ian Waller are cooking at one of the UK’s most iconic food events in 2025 as Northcote’s Obsession celebrates its 25th anniversary
Obsession, one of the most prestigious and internationally recognised gourmet festivals in Europe, is set to captivate guests from 24 January to 9 February 2025 as they witness 21 world-class chefs.
Taking place over 17 nights, the festival will see chefs travel to Northcote from around the world, each delivering the essence of their cooking in the heart of Lancashire’s Ribble Valley.
On the event, Cal Byerley says:
“We’ve cooked in some pretty maxing events over the years, but this is a major highlight for Ian and me. One thing is for certain we can't wait to get into Northcote’s kitchen, share our menu and a little insight into our cooking ethos and what we are about.''
More information on Obsession25 can be found at: northcoteobsession.com
In the meantime, here is a teaser of one of the dishes Cal and Ian will be sharing at the event…

Raw Scallop, Rhubarb and Rose Geranium
Ingredients
2x hand dived scallops in shell
1kg forced rhubarb
200g rose geranium
600g cream
300g milk
2tbsp juniper
Live natural yoghurt
Rhubarb root oil
Dill oil
Smoked scallop roe oil
Method
Start with the fermented rhubarb and juice. Salt 100g of rhubarb at 6%, then refrigerate for up to 12 months. Juice the remaining rhubarb and ferment with the rose geranium at 3% salt in the fridge for a minimum of three months. (Fine strain before use).
Take cream to 90°c and milk to 85°c then combine. Add in the toasted crushed juniper.
Leave to infuse until the temperature is 30°c or below. Strain the juniper. Add 75g of yoghurt starter and ferment at 40°c for 48 hours. Chill, hang and season if needed. Shuck the scallop, separate the roe and skirt, and save the skirt for garum or broth. Rest the scallop overnight in the fridge. Cure the roe with 8% salt for 12 hours, smoke it, and then dehydrate completely. Once dry, blend it into a fine powder.
To plate, into chilled bowls pipe 15g of juniper yoghurt, make a well with the back of a hot spoon and fill it with three drops of dill oil top with three small slices of salted rhubarb being careful so as not to break the well and let the oil escape.
Slice one scallop into two horizontally and use a very
sharp knife to ‘hasselback’ the scallop at a slight angle (this allows for better surface area for tasting) carefully season the scallop with scallop roe powder and oil on the back side then place over the yoghurt and rhubarb with the ‘hasselback’ facing up.
Finish the dish with 1 tsp of ice-cold fermented rhubarb juice and 5 dots of rhubarb root oil. Plating must be fast and precise to maintain temperature.
Serve immediately.
Next stop: Freyja
The duo behind Hjem, Northumberland’s first Michelinstarred restaurant, are raising the bar once more with Freyja - a gastronomic destination combining Scandi design, garden-to-fork dining, and unforgettable experiences at Close House, in the heart of the Tyne Valley
The sun is setting on another winter day as I settle down with a cup of tea to write up notes from the morning’s chat with Swedish chef Alex Nietosvuori and his partner, Northumberland-born Ally Thompson-Nietosvuori.
The pair’s enthusiasm is infectious as they share plans for their latest venture, Freyja, a boldly imagined restaurant with rooms set to open at Close House in 2026. It’s a project brimming with promise, rooted in their trademark mix of relaxed hospitality and culinary finesse.
“We’ve been dreaming about Freyja for years,” Alex begins.
“It’s such an exciting opportunity to create something from scratch - something truly spectacular.” Ally nods in agreement.
“When we met Charlie Watkins, our financial partner, the concept started to take shape. He shares our vision for elevating gastronomy in the North East, and Close House is the perfect location for it.”
For Alex and Ally, Freyja represents more than just a restaurant; it’s a culmination of years of hard work, lessons learned, and a shared passion for pushing boundaries.
Freyja promises to be an immersive experience for all the senses. The restaurant will overlook the valley and the grounds of Close House, nestled in the Tyne Valley.
“It’s not just about food,” Alex says.
“It’s about the journey, the design, the atmosphere - creating something unforgettable. We want to take guests on an adventure, from the moment they arrive to the moment they leave.
“Imagine starting your evening in a greenhouse,” Alex continues...
“You’re sipping champagne, enjoying garden
A
blend of Scandinavian simplicity and Northumbrian charm. It’ll be warm, inviting and luxurious, with lots of wood and natural textures
canapés surrounded by fresh produce. Then you move to the lounge, then the main dining room. You’re never in one place for too long - it’s an experience, not just a meal.”
Ally adds with a smile: “We’re big on flow. We’re designing every aspect to feel seamless and natural.”
Close House, already renowned for its golf courses and elegant Georgian architecture, is an idyllic backdrop.
“The Walled Garden, built in 1779, is central to everything,” Ally explains.
“We’re restoring it to its original purpose, with Bob - our brilliant gardener - already hard at work planting an orchard, fruit, and vegetables. By the time we open, it’ll supply most of the produce for the kitchen.”
This vision of a self-sustaining garden mirrors their broader philosophy of connecting food to its origins, honouring the land, and championing seasonal produce.
Alex grins: “And I won’t have to mow the lawn!”
Ally laughs and adds: “The grounds are stunning. Guests can wander around the garden, glass of champagne in hand, or even chat with Bob about his no-dig gardening techniques. It’s a unique way of bringing people closer to the source of their food.”
From the outset, Freyja’s design is set to impress. Ally describes the architecture as: “A blend of Scandinavian simplicity and Northumbrian charm. It’ll be warm, inviting, and luxurious, with lots of wood and natural textures.”
The layout reflects their dedication to detail.
“There’ll be an atrium entrance leading to a lounge with huge windows overlooking the valley,” Ally says.
“The dining room will have an open kitchen and a meat fridge on display, and the building will also feature a wine cellar, and a private dining space. Plus, we’re adding 12 beautiful bedrooms, including three larger suites.”
The addition of rooms speaks to their ambition to turn Freyja into a true destination for food lovers, one that entices visitors to stay and immerse themselves in the experience fully.
Alex and Ally’s first venture, Hjem, opened near Hexham in 2019 and quickly earned a Michelin star. Its fusion of Scandinavian cooking techniques and local Northumbrian ingredients made it a standout on the UK’s culinary map. Yet, for all its success, the duo sees Freyja as an opportunity to grow and evolve.
“At Hjem, we’ve shown how working with the best and freshest local ingredients can create something truly special,” Alex reflects.
“Freyja will build on that foundation but allow us to push boundaries further.”
“The cooking will still be Alex’s,” Ally adds. “But at Freyja, we’ll have the space and facilities to experiment in ways we can’t at Hjem.”
With a larger kitchen and the opportunity to create their own facilities from scratch,
they’re planning to introduce elements that elevate the dining experience to new heights.
When I press Alex for a sneak peek at the menu, he’s cagey but teasing.
“I’ve got some ideas,” he says, with a smile.
“Seafood will definitely play a big role, alongside produce from the Walled Garden.
And of course, we’ll continue working with local suppliers. The details will evolve as we go.”
Ally adds: “That’s the exciting part - it’s about letting the menu grow naturally with the seasons and the land.”
Beyond the food and design, Freyja will focus on people.
“Hospitality is so much more than a job,”
Ally says passionately.
“It’s creative, inspiring, and rewarding. We want Freyja to be a place where young people see the possibilities of a career in this industry.”
She speaks candidly about the challenges facing the hospitality sector, particularly in recent years.
“There’s a misconception that hospitality is just long hours and stress, but it can be so much more.
“At Hjem, we’ve built a team that feels like family, and we want to carry that spirit to Freyja. We want it to be a place where people feel valued and inspired.”
Alex sums it up in two words: “Casual luxury.”
The couple’s passion, creativity, and
dedication shines through in every word as we chat through the new venture, leaving no doubt that Freyja will be a remarkable addition to the North East’s culinary landscape.
As our call wraps up, I’m left feeling
incredibly excited about the duo’s plans. It’s still early days, but with its showstopping designs, groundbreaking gastronomy, and heartfelt hospitality, it promises to be a feast for all the senses. And I, for one, can’t wait to pull up a chair.
A tale of two spas
Elysia Fryer embarks on the ultimate feel-good getaway to Northern Ireland, uncovering the grandeur of Galgorm and the intimate charm of The Old Inn - two totally different but equally tranquil spa escapes
A short, fuss-free flight from Newcastle International Airport has us in Belfast, where, within moments, the vibrant city gives way to rolling countryside. We’re scooped up at the airport, and through breathtaking Northern Irish landscapes, we’re ready to immerse ourselves in a weekend of indulgence, laughter, and much-needed relaxation.
Our first stop is Galgorm Spa & Golf Resort, a name that has long been synonymous with Northern Ireland’s luxury travel scene. Yet, even with high expectations, the reality takes our breath away. Spanning a vast 450 acres of lush parkland, the estate unfolds like a dream, the River Maine carving its way through the grounds, and the main building standing boldly at the centre.
Our home for the night is a two-bedroom cottage suite, and it feels like a home away from home, with lots of little luxuries thrown in for good measure. Think crisp white linens, soft throws, and every corner styled with effortless elegance. The cosy lounge is comfortable and inviting, and the fully equipped kitchen suggests a level of thoughtfulness that matches the resort’s reputation for five-star service. But the real
luxury? Those fluffy robes and flip flops waiting to escort us into a world of relaxation.
Galgorm’s Thermal Spa Village is less a spa and more a sprawling, magical wellness destination. Imagine if Center Parcs met the
world’s most indulgent spa retreat, and you’re halfway there. Every turn reveals something extraordinary, from bubbling riverside hot tubs to saunas hidden beneath the trees. The connection to nature is integral here; each area feels thoughtfully
placed within its surroundings, as if the spa was always meant to exist within this landscape.
We begin our journey in the Riverside Garden, where the soothing sound of the River Maine enhances the meditative calm of the thermal pools. The Riverside Garden is also home to hot tubs on the river’s edge, as well as The Salt Cave, Elements Cafe and the Celtic Sauna.
We soon find ourselves drifting towards the Alpine Garden - a Nordic-inspired retreat meandering through the well-kept gardens, complete with heated loungers, vitality pools and cosy pods to help you drift off to dreamtime.
Then there’s the Walled Garden, a true gem within this already extraordinary spa. Here, paths lead us to secluded steam rooms, saunas, and the Palm House, where we sip on cocktails delivered directly to our hot tub via QR code. It’s that easy!
Each and every experience feels like an adventure in itself. The Snow Cabin offers an invigorating jolt of icy freshness, while the 20-metre indoor pool - with its polished

Galgorm
Galgorm
pebble floor gently massaging our feetprovides a tranquil space to simply float and breathe. It’s impossible not to feel spoiled; every corner of the spa has been designed with both luxury and joy in mind.
When hunger strikes, Fratelli, Galgorm’s rustic Italian restaurant, is the answer. Fresh pasta dishes bursting with flavour and perfectly grilled fish showcase the best of simple, authentic Italian cooking. An indulgent Irish coffee rounds out the meal, preparing us for the lively atmosphere of McKendry’s Lounge Bar. It’s a cosy pub within the hotel, complete with live music and a stellar selection of drinks. It’s the kind of place that keeps the conversation flowing until late into the night.
As we climb into bed, cocooned in soft
linens, there’s a collective sense of awe among us. Galgorm has exceeded every expectation - not just in scale but in the way it seamlessly balances grandeur with warmth. It’s a place where luxury feels effortless, where you’re treated like royalty but welcomed like family.
The following morning, we bid farewell to Galgorm and make our way to The Old Inn, a property that offers something entirely different but equally enchanting. Nestled in the storybook village of Crawfordsburn, just 15 minutes from Belfast and a stone’s throw from the seaside town of Bangor, this historic retreat feels worlds apart from the expansive elegance of Galgorm.
The Old Inn is steeped in history and charm. The moment we step through the doors,
we’re transported to another era - dark wood panelling, roaring fireplaces, and a cosiness that makes you want to linger. It’s impossible not to imagine C.S. Lewis, who honeymooned here, crafting tales of magical lands inspired by this very setting.
While Galgorm offers grandeur, The Old Inn is all about intimacy. Its Treetop Spa, perched among the trees overlooking Crawfordsburn Country Park, is the epitome of serene indulgence. The outdoor bathing pool is our first stop, its warm waters cocooning us against the crisp winter air.
Nearby, a Moroccan-inspired cabana with heated waterbeds, fur throws, and softly glowing lanterns beckons for an afternoon of complete relaxation.
The beauty of The Old Inn’s spa lies in its
simplicity. It’s not trying to dazzle with scale but instead charms with its thoughtful details - rich colours, soft textures, and an ambience that feels like a warm embrace. The Conservatory is our favourite spot to retreat, with classical music gently playing as we curl up with blankets and admire the view of the treetops.
By the time dinner rolls around, we’re fully immersed in The Old Inn’s charm. The restaurant is a celebration of Northern Irish produce, and it blows us away with every sip and bite. The seared scallops are perfectly cooked, the baked Atlantic cod impossibly fresh, and the balance of flavours throughout the meal is flawless. The 1614 Bar, with its lively yet laid-back atmosphere, provides the perfect backdrop for our final night, with live music adding a touch of magic to the evening.
As the weekend comes to a close, we find ourselves reflecting on the two very different but equally exceptional experiences.
Galgorm dazzles with its scale and variety, offering a sense of escape so complete you feel like you’ve entered another world. The Old Inn, meanwhile, enchants with its intimacy and character, wrapping you in a comforting warmth that lingers long after you leave.
Both properties capture something unique about Northern Ireland - its ability to blend the grand with the personal, the historic with the contemporary. Together, they’ve given us the ultimate girls’ getaway. One filled with laughter, indulgence, and the kind of relaxation that stays with you long after the trip is over. As we board our flight home, we’re already dreaming of our return.

Snow days
Dreaming up the perfect snowy escape?
Think powdery slopes, cosy chalets, and indulgent dining in the heart of the French Alps. This is your Luxe guide to a stress-free, luxurious ski holiday in Morzine
With the crunch of fresh snow underfoot, the Alpine peaks shimmering in the sun, and the warmth of a roaring fire in cafes, restaurants and chalets at the foot of the mountains, it’s the winter escape that dreams are made of. If you’re searching for a ski holiday that balances indulgence and ease while wrapping you in the cosiness of home, then this picturesque French Alps village is your ultimate destination. And, best of all, the travel is refreshingly straightforward.
Getting to Morzine is surprisingly stressfree, which isn’t something you can say about most ski holidays. A short flight from Newcastle to Geneva and a scenic 90-minute transfer is all it takes to find yourself in this magical setting. Before you know it, you’ve waved goodbye to life at home and you’re surrounded by enchanting landscapes and the promise of a luxurious stay in one of Morgan Jupe’s beautiful apartments or chalets.
Nestled within the sprawling Portes du Soleil ski area, Morzine is a charming Alpine village that feels both traditional and
refined. It offers everything from worldclass skiing to a vibrant après-ski culture, and even if skiing isn’t your thing, the scenery alone is enough to captivate. With 650 km of pistes, stretching across 14 valleys and into Switzerland, there’s something here for everyone - whether you’re carving up the black runs, gliding along gentle blues, or simply enjoying the view from a quaint cafe with a steaming mug of hot chocolate in hand. Our home for the week is Chalet de mes Reves, an idyllic Morgan Jupe property that redefines luxury living. The chalet perfectly blends rustic charm with elegant touchesthink wooden beams, cosy furnishings, and an inviting fire that instantly makes you want to kick off your boots and relax. Though it can accommodate up to 10 guests, it feels wonderfully intimate for a small group. Every corner of the chalet is designed with comfort in mind. Heated boot rooms make early mornings effortless, while the private hot tub offers the perfect spot to soak under the stars after a day on the slopes. Its close proximity to the ski lift - and the ability to ski back to the chalet - means we can be up the mountain within moments of finishing
Our most treasured moments are spent back at the chalet, curled up by the fire with a glass of wine, gazing out at the skiers weaving their way through the snow-covered trees
breakfast, and we can be back enjoying the chalet’s warm embrace, especially when the weather turns.
While my partner spends his days conquering the pistes, I find just as much joy exploring Morzine’s other offerings. The village is a delightful mix of boutique shops, gourmet restaurants, and lively bars, making it a paradise for non-skiers too.
L’Etale, a bustling brasserie famed for its decadent fondue and raclette, is the perfect spot for warming up with hearty comfort food after a chilly day. Just be sure to book ahead during peak season. Our most treasured moments, however, are spent back at the chalet, curled up by the fire with a glass of wine, gazing out at the skiers weaving their way through the snow-covered trees.
What truly sets a chalet ski holiday apart is the ease it brings to what can often be a stressful trip to navigate. Operating seven self-catered chalets and apartments, Morgan Jupe live and breathe the resort, and are on hand to ensure your stay is as comfortable as possible.
Ski trips, particularly in larger groups, can be tricky things to organise - Jess and Josh from Morgan Jupe, are there to take the stress away. You name it, they’ve got it coveredfrom a comprehensive pre-arrival concierge service, to assistance in booking and recommending additional services including daily bread and pastry deliveries, evening meal deliveries, private chefs, slope shuttles and housekeeping.
For couples, families and groups of friends alike, Morzine is a real box ticker. It offers the perfect balance of adrenaline-fuelled adventure and tranquil intimacy. Whether you’re sipping champagne by the fire, exploring the charming village streets, or catching first tracks on a powdery morning, it’s a place where memories are made. And with Morgan Jupe’s attention to detail, you can rest assured that your every whim will be catered to.
If you’re planning a winter escape for 2025, I can’t recommend Morzine and Morgan Jupe enough.

Luxe pet Q&A
Finn is a five-year-old Golden Retriever. He lives in Yarm but was originally found wandering the streets of Izmir in Turkey. In July 2022, he became a Wag Friendship Dog, bringing love every week to older people in the Tees Valley. He has a huge heart and one of his favourite things to do is visit Max at Ayresome Court in Stockton-on-Tees. Max is deaf and blind and can’t communicate verbally, so having Max to cuddle is very important. When visiting, the carers lower Max’s bed so Finn can hop on. Max puts his arms around Finn and signs the word ‘heaven’.
LUXE WALKS
Finn loves the beach and particularly sharing his walk with his Goldie brother, Alfie. He loves to run and swim after a ball, bound up and down the sand dunes and play hide and seek.
POOCH’S PERFECT DAY OUT
Finn can be a bit lazy, so he’s quite happy to sprawl out on the sofa or suck his favourite soft toy until he falls asleep. He also loves being out and about, he loves people and being the centre of attention getting as much fuss as possible.
HOUND HABITS
Finn makes us laugh every day! He loves
sucking his toys like a dummy and falling asleep in the process. His mum Steph always has a full ‘triage box’ at the ‘Dog Toy Hospital’ waiting to be repaired, washed and returned to his toy box.
PUPPY PAMPER
Finn and Alfie visit the groomers around three times a year (and love it), but in between he loves being brushed and massaged.
DOG’S BEST FRIEND
His best friend is his brother Alfie (now 11). He is a beautiful soul and an amazing role model for Finn. After being rescued, Alfie taught Finn the rules (the good and the bad ones!).
FONDEST DOGGY MEMORY
It has to be his relationship with Max. Finn communicates with him in his own way. It is such a special relationship for the pair of them, and definitely the highlight of their week.

When I was pregnant in 2019 we toyed with the idea of moving out of London, something I wasn't keen to do, but Jack had always wanted to move up to the North East of England where I'm from - Northumberland particularly, for the dramatic landscape. I had left for London at 18 so spent all my formative and adult years in a very different headspace and was less keen. But he had found a truly magnificent property (and project) that we fell in love with and we would also be about an hour from each of my parents which was helpful.
The house is very special and has a very unique past, first as a sixteenth century farmstead with flagstone floors, magnificent thick walls, stone fireplaces and a huge bread-oven, extended in the 1750s to a much grander residence for the local mine
agent of the Blackett-Beaumont mines in the North Pennines through the 18th and 19th centuries.
The front facade is very handsome with large panelled sash windows. We've realised that at some point the property will have been rendered and painted, making it really stand out in the landscape - I assume deliberately looming over the mining villages, but now it has a beautiful, softer stonework exterior.
It is Grade II* which makes it incredibly challenging to navigate as a modern family but we feel like custodians of the property in some respects and it has been working for us wonderfully given my young children and the size of the house. We have backgrounds in art history and are both fascinated about architecture and the stories buildings can tell.
The initial early Georgian extension has some beautiful features from curved ceilings to curtained decorative fireplaces.
The main hall was then sectioned into smaller rooms during the Victorian period which have intricate (listed) plasterwork and cornicing, generous skirting boards and the inglenooks are now slightly lower, with large marble surrounds.
Some fabulously significant historical figures have lived or visited here. It was home to geologist, mining agent, and celebrated engineer, Thomas Sopwith in the nineteenth century, who was fascinated with the geology of the landscape and established a collection of fluorspa and other crystals found in the mines. They line the garden beds now - sadly previous owners had taken most of them with time - but the ones we have do make the house feel very grounded and full of good energy. There is still a front and back to the house, with the pantry (my favourite room) and original kitchen sitting behind thick walls and a heavy padded door - which my husband reupholstered in gorgeous Nicky Haslam Balcony Stripes. I love cooking and hosting, so I think the only challenging bit is feeling very much like a servant in the traditional quarters while everyone is having fun out the front, but we have created a gorgeous working kitchen for now, full of artwork from our gallery artists, and plans to create a larger more family-friendly kitchen space are in place for 2025.
Jack has always wanted a creative space that welcomes artists, designers, thinkers - like a salon vibe. While moving here through Covid didn't quite have the same effect, many of the design elements aren't what we initially set out to do, and have instead been informed by (initial) limitations, and then as a living creative space.
I know we could have had the house finished and in pristine condition by now if we'd settled for the traditional maximalist country living aesthetic, but the truth is we have so many design influences, and annoyingly, we are both visually led, so many of the decisions come from countless conversations and negotiation. It can be exhausting having to discuss every minute palette, texture, picture hang - but ultimately rewarding.
THE TRANSFORMATION
Jack is trained in colour theory and he has a real eye, so there is no one I trust more for complementing colourways than him. He's also a whizz at practical things like carpentry and building, so no idea is too ambitious and we work together in realising projects around the house or outside.
There had been a big chimney fire at the property just as we put our offer in. It was a real setback as I was about to have a baby, we needed to move, and then came Covid. It felt like a real slog at the time but ultimately all the relevant people from Historic England, the council, and various historic architects and builders were brought into the property and reviewed the entire place while we lived in a very pretty cottage not far away where we could walk out during that glorious spring. Asbestos was removed, coving restored, chimneys lined, electrics rewired and so on, things we hadn't accounted for and that made the house safe for our new young family.
The owners were happy (to an extent) for us to be in discussion with the builders about remedial decor. Jack and I adore Venice, the Biennale (from which inspired Woolwich Contemporary) and the empty crumbling palazzi look. We visited the house the day they'd anticipated painting the stripped dining room which I quickly halted. We left this room bare but with beautifully restored cornicing. Ironically, we were commissioning some of our artists to create designs for wall coverings and fabrics, given the nature of Covid and working at home making people revisit their interiors. Eleanor May Watson, who I continue to represent, created a stunning homage to the pool at Hadrian's Villa in Rome - a 3 x 11m frieze which we had editioned into a limited series of ten. The prototypes arrived for a shoot but it was the second lockdown and we couldn't use the booked studio. We therefore installed it in our drawing room, and so one Italian city led to another. Absolutely unplanned and reactionary to the time and situation.
I had recently discovered some incredible unfinished tapestries at Jack's grandmother's house which had been started by her mother in the 1930s. Three panels of climbing foliage and where the thread stops, the pencil marks that remain unthreaded continue. They fitted perfectly in our 'unfinished' dining room so I had them backed onto some lovely raw linen by my wonderful seamstress in North Yorkshire. I have organically gathered a great team of upholsterers, fabric designers, factories, suppliers, makers and so on that I can go to to help realise some of my ideas. I source a lot of our fabrics, if not from designers I know, or commissioned pieces, from a great fabric factory shop in Cumbria.
My bedroom is my haven and takes in a much more considered Colin King vibe of soft furnishings, mid century pieces and
calmness (when children's washing isn't piled up). I have a Georgian round table as you enter stacked with coffee table books, a vase of flowers I endeavour to keep full of garden hauls, and the incredible view out the window behind.
The bed sits in an alcove we padded out with an encompassing headboard in vintage 1970s green bouclé jack sourced for me. The side tables are low, leather topped 1960s pieces from a vintage shop in Newcastle that I saw in a shoot at my great friend, textile designer, Susi Bellamy's house which isn't far from us.
I had the walls lined in a soft gold grasscloth I sourced directly from the factory in Asia as I like to know where things are coming from and who's involved in the processes where possible. At the end of the bed I have a restored 1960s Danish sofa bed with walnut arms that we'd had in our flat in London but looked lost (and ultimately so uncomfortable) in our sitting room with a coffee table, and I also have upholstered window seats - the idea was that I was going to waft about in gorgeous loungewear and casually sit with a book and a coffee... but the reality is somewhat different as parents of young children will understand. I do have a separate dressing room however where a lot of my things can be stored and it is a luxury. Jack's dressing room is in a fabulous secret staircase to our annexe, so if grandparents are staying, the children can go through 'Narnia' to find them in the morning.
The nursery adjoins our room which was perfect as new parents. Jack has created a (working) frieze of the landscape around us. It is a proper old fashioned nursery where the children can eat, sleep and play if they choose to. My daughter's dresses hang in a walk through space from one of the entrances (there are doors everywhere in this house) and books line the opposite wall. Currently there is a rattan bed for my daughter and mid-century cot-bed for my son, but both will have canopy twins by Christmas (I'm in the process of choosing the fabrics and trying out a new local upholsterer on another project I am completing nearby for someone else). Their drawers are some big old pink ones I bought from Alladins Cave in Lewisham in my second year of university, so they've had great wear. Lots of their mini seats etc and their school desk come from my in-laws who have an incredible french antique shop, The Boule-In in Suffolk, same with the rugs and Indian textiles. Floor cushions and curtains I had made. The artworks in here are all sentimental pieces - the David Shrigley was acquired from Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair for my daughter at her first Fair when she was three months old. The magical Cat Roissetter story-telling pieces are from an exhibition of her work we hosted at Brocket gallery, other pieces from when Jack and I were children etc.
The artwork throughout the property is considered and tells a tale. Many of the pieces are from when I was younger - my dad collected contemporary art and actually bought me my first original print by Paula Rego when I was a teenager.
Lots of the works are from artists we have championed or had exhibitions for that we have collected ourselves, or that have been generously gifted.
In 2022 we launched The Brocket Residency, which invites artists to stay up with us in the North Pennines, to look at their work, to have some time to reconnect, and see how they want to develop their practice. They have their own living space, access to our studio and we host an event with them to meet new audiences and discuss their time in the residency itself. We have been very
lucky to have received some beautiful thank you gifts from artists that respond to our home and their time here, which are very personal and treasured.
How we hang the work and navigate our collection through the house varies. In the drawing room, it was all about how we layer and hang that first piece on top of the incredible frieze. Luckily Eleanor's installations are designed to hang work on top of work, and it is key to layering stories and experience. On our main stairs we have an academy hang which has inadvertently got a yellow accent running through which brightens the space while drawing the eye up the stairs. We are still in the process of designing the upper rooms and the attic stairs. So far we have a deep blue on there to warm the space, as it’s an enormous cavity and an initial mood board and artworks assigned, but currently we’re awaiting permissions to install a guest bathroom up there. One of the guest bedrooms is usable with a beautiful bespoke artist-designed headboard and white linen columns of fabric hanging from the ceiling.
They were left over from an exhibition of Jonathan Parker's I hosted in Belgravia last December and I reused them around the bed to give height to the attic room. The accompanying blinds and soft furnishings are mostly fabric by Flora Soames in this room. The annexe however is set up as our guest accommodation currently and has a lovely luxurious bathroom we are all wanting to use all the time.
ABOUT THE DESIGNER
Jack (Bullen) and I (Lizzie Glendinning) are gallerists and art advisors. We run advisory and exhibitions platform, Brocket London, (former gallery which hosts The Brocket Residency), and Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair, the leading international art fair for contemporary print.
I am a trained curator with a background in art history and fashion, and Jack, my husband, was an artist. We met in London in 2011 and in 2014 decided to set up our own gallery project, which specialises in emerging to mid-career artists, with specific references to reinterpreting art
historical narratives or processes.
In 2016, on a slight whim, we launched Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair in London's extraordinary derelict former Arsenal - complete with architectural exindustrial gems, which mirrored our ethos behind the Fair and our interests in utilising unique spaces and creating something visually engaging.
My background as a curator and experience across art and design have given me incredible insight and enjoyment in producing visual narratives, both for wider audiences through exhibitions and styling, and also when creating interior stories and concepts.
Jack and I have renovated properties before and I've also decorated for a number of clients as an off-shoot from my Living With Art service, where I curate art collections in people's homes. We are currently working on a number of large-scale projects bringing in accommodation, which we are designing ourselves with contemporary art curation at its core, for a unique and beautiful experience.

When he’s not inspiring pupils at Dame Allan’s Schools, teacher Andrew Smith steps onto set as a background artist, working alongside top actors in gripping TV dramas
Andrew, a religious and philosophical studies (RPS) teacher, most recently shared the set with acclaimed actress Sheridan Smith for the upcoming ITV true-crime drama ‘I Fought the Law’, expected to air this year.
The series recounts the true story of Ann Ming, a mother who fought for 15 years to overturn double jeopardy laws, ensuring her daughter’s murderer faced justice. Filming took place in August across Teesside, and Andrew spent long days on set.
He says: “Sheridan Smith was incredible to watch. There was one scene she had to perform 34 times in one day. It was amazing to see how she could switch emotions on and off so effortlessly.”
Andrew’s journey into the world of TV extras began more than a decade ago when he signed up with an agency. Two years ago he joined NE1 4.TV, an international casting agency based in Newcastle.
His first TV role was in a reconstruction of the infamous Chicago airline disaster for ‘Seconds From Disaster: Flight 191’, a National Geographic production filmed at Newcastle Airport.
“I was meant to be a passenger on the plane,” Andrew recalls.
“But as I was going through Newcastle Airport, someone in production asked if I was one of the actors. I said yes, and the next thing I knew, I was dressed as a pilot, reading lines with another lead actor in the worst American accent imaginable!”
Despite the mix-up, Andrew’s improvised

performance made it into the final cut. Andrew also appeared in the 2024 British crime drama ‘The Red King’, a mysterythriller set on the fictional Welsh island of St Jory. The series was filmed in locations across Northumberland, including Embleton, Craster, Alnmouth and Cambois.
During filming, Andrew shared the set with British actress Adjoa Andoh, renowned for her role in ‘Bridgerton’.
“She was absolutely lovely,” Andrew says.
“I remember we were filming a really serious scene in Craster when someone spotted a pod of dolphins swimming in the sea. One moment we were fully immersed in this intense drama, and the next, the entire cast and crew just stopped to watch the dolphins in awe!”
Andrew balances his passion for television work with a career spanning over 29 years in teaching and advisory roles, which brought him to Dame Allan’s Schools in November 2023. Alongside teaching RPS and Key Stage 3 geography and history, he is part of the teaching team for the school’s EPQ programme.
His enthusiasm for performance extends to the classroom.
“I want my pupils to see that there are opportunities to explore things outside of their main career path,” he says.
“It’s about showing them they can embrace new challenges and step outside their comfort zones.”
Andrew’s passion stretches back to his own school days in Harrogate, where he was involved in school productions and developed a fascination for broadcasting. In the mid-90s, he co-presented a Sunday morning show on BBC Tees.
Away from the classroom and film sets, Andrew is also involved in his local community, serving as Chair for Friends of Dunston Staiths, trustee for the charity ‘Love Dunston,’ and volunteer team leader for the Greenbelt Festival.

LITTLE MOMENTS
with Nadia McSheffrey
As the calendar flips to 2025, the temptation to hit the ‘reset’ button is stronger than ever. We shift into serious mode and start thinking about restrictions, cutting back and limiting this and that...
But what if we could embrace the new year without the usual pressure to completely overhaul our lives? What if we could focus on small, intentional changes that help our children - and ourselvesgrow, without the rigid structure of New Year’s resolutions that often feel like a countdown to burnout?
When coaching my ‘Tranquil Parenting’ families, I try to inject some fun into January and put them into a positive frame of mind to start the year. Here are some of my suggestions.
Rather than focusing solely on restriction, let’s start 2025 with a gentler approach: by leaning into the joy of family connection, prioritising laughter and embracing wellbeing in our parenting. The key is in creating sustainable habits that feel good to us as parents and to our children; we want to find joy in the ordinary moments. Dark January is actually an excellent opportunity to refresh family routines and ensure they support a balanced, calm and nurturing environment. Routines provide children with a sense of security and as much as we love spontaneous adventures (and we do!), a steady rhythm can bring a sense of peace. You don’t need to revamp everything - small tweaks can make a world of difference.
Start by looking at your morning and evening routines. Are there elements that cause increasing tension? Let’s make a plan using child development as a foundation. A child’s cortisol levels peak within 30 minutes of waking, so this can lead to stress, screaming and tantrumsand that’s just for us as parents! If mornings are always rushed, consider adjusting the schedule to allow more time for the transition from wake-up to school drop-off. Try setting out clothes the night before, putting on some relaxing music in the kitchen or reducing the number of decisions your children need to make to ensure that mornings feel smoother.
One of the most important things you can offer your children is your presence, so if your schedule allows, try starting the day with a few minutes of calm together before you all head into the busy day. This could mean breakfast at the table, a quiet discussion in the car or even one minute of family mindfulness. Sit together for 60 seconds, breathe deeply and think about one thing each person is excited for that day. It could be as simple as playing with a friend or enjoying a favourite lesson. This small practice fosters connection, reduces
morning stress and sets a positive tone for the day. You’ll be amazed at how impactful one quiet, focused moment can be for everyone.
After-school restraint collapse is a real thing, so evenings are another prime opportunity to reset and slow down. Have a nutritious snack and a hug ready for them. Keep it simple. A gentle bedtime routine, which might include reading a book together, dimming the lights and enjoying some quiet bonding time, can help your children (and you) wind down after a busy day. Try to make it a little longer than you think necessary because sometimes exhausted children get a sudden burst of energy and they need longer to regulate their nervous system. If we give them time and space, this will help improve sleep, which is crucial to emotional health and wellbeing. We often hear the phrase ‘you can’t pour from an empty cup,’ but when you’re a parent, it can be easy to forget the importance of refilling that cup. Self-care isn’t just about spa days (though those are lovely when possible); it’s about taking the time to check in with yourself, physically and emotionally and asking: ‘How am I really doing?’
When we prioritise our wellbeing, we model that behaviour for our children. Being mindful of your own needs doesn’t mean you’re neglecting your children, it means you’re better equipped to show up for them in ways that matter. The same principle applies to our children. Health isn’t just about eating vegetables or being active; it’s about teaching children to listen to their bodies, take breaks when they need to and understand their own feelings. Model how to take care of your mental and emotional wellbeing and encourage your kids to find ways to nurture their own wellbeing too - whether it’s through art, outdoor play, journaling or simply talking about their day. Instead of focusing on what needs to change, why not consider what’s already working well?
Reflect on the small, positive habits you already have in place. This year, focus on building from those foundations. Remember that life as a family will never be perfect and it’s not supposed to be! But if we focus on the positives, set realistic intentions and nurture our relationships, we can continue to grow together.
Starting 2025 in style doesn’t have to mean drastic changes - it can simply mean appreciating what works and nurturing the relationships that matter most - and of course, having fun!

AT THE WHEEL
with Bob Arora
Power meets precision
BMW’s new M5 redefines hybrid performance, blending luxury, practicality, and sheer driving thrill
the M3 still reigns supreme.
Every decade, a car emerges that becomes a trendsetter and the benchmark to beat.
The Golf GTI set the standard for the hot hatch segment. Many manufacturers tried to copy the GTI’s winning formula, but few came close. Similarly, Mazda introduced the MX-5, which remains one of the best two-seat soft-tops available. Despite numerous attempts, competitors have struggled to emulate its success.
BMW’s M division also created a legend with the original M3. While Mercedes and Audi have launched strong contenders,
Forty years ago, BMW unveiled another benchmark: the M5. Before its arrival, the range-topping 535i was the go-to for combining performance and luxury. But then, BMW engineers took the stunning M1 engine and dropped it into a 5 Series, giving birth to the M5. This ‘wolf in sheep’s clothing’ became the must-have car for those seeking family-friendly practicality and supercar performance.
Since its debut, the M5 has only undergone seven updates. The latest generation is its most radical yet, being heavier and slower than its predecessor - a shift that hasn’t sat well with purists. However, the hybrid setup
offers distinct advantages. The electric motor working alongside the petrol engine delivers incredible torque. Plus, it allows the car to travel up to 43 miles on battery power alone, reaching speeds of up to 83mph. The 18.6kW battery charges in around three hours via a 7kW home charger. While the hybrid system brings practicality, the additional battery weight means this M5 is heavier than before. BMW has cleverly placed the batteries under the subfloor, preserving boot space - a common trade-off in hybrid designs.
Under the bonnet, a 4.4-litre V8 engine combines with the electric motor to produce an astonishing 717bhp, propelling the car to 62mph in just 3.5 seconds. Drive gently in Comfort mode, and you might see over 30mpg. But press the accelerator, and fuel economy plummets - rewarded, however, by a symphony of pops and bangs from the exhaust. Opting for the M Driver’s Package increases the top speed from 155mph to 189mph - a box worth ticking!
The latest M5 is the most powerful ever and also the most expensive, starting at £111,000. A Touring version adds even more practicality for families.
Power is sent to all four wheels, but settings allow you to direct it solely to the rear wheels - a daring move best left to those with Hamilton-esque skills. The sheer number of configurable settings is staggering, but once fine-tuned, the M1 and M2 buttons on the steering wheel let you save your preferences. Without these shortcuts, adjusting daily settings could take 30 minutes each time.
Visually, the M5 is a statement. Carbon fibre
accents - optional, of course - add menace to the front and rear diffusers, while the quad exhausts exude performance. The massive kidney grilles remain polarising, now illuminated for extra drama. The flared arches and huge alloys enhance its commanding road presence.
Inside, the M5 screams luxury. Leather wraps every surface, showcasing impeccable quality. A standout feature is the nearly 15-inch infotainment screen, which boasts a display sharp enough to rival high-end TVs. This controls everything - from suspension settings to heating, radio, and mobile connectivity.
The Bowers & Wilkins 18-speaker sound system delivers an immersive 655-watt experience. If the engine’s symphony isn’t enough, the audio system provides a worthy alternative, making it feel like the artist is performing just for you.
If you’re looking for a super saloon capable of transporting your family in comfort while conquering the Nürburgring, the BMW M5 ticks all the boxes.

A WATCHFUL EYE
with Josh Sims
Josh Sims on battling the fight against counterfeit goods…
Fabrice Gueroux used to take just a few minutes, maybe an hour, to ascertain whether a watch that one of his clients planned to buy was a fake or not. These days, says watch consultant and author of ‘Real & Fake Watches’, the process can take days. And require taking apart the watch. This is a consequence of the rise of what he calls the super-fake.
If, a few years ago, most counterfeit watches could be ascribed to a handful of well-known mega-factories in China, now plants have opened in Vietnam, Thailand and elsewhere, all feeding the rocketing demand powered by the internet. Increased sales have allowed investment in all the latest manufacturing equipment - from CNC machines to 3D printers - while, as in all business, increased competition has driven an increase in quality.
Gueroux says it takes an expert eye to tell the genuine article apart from a copy now. Others agree. Pre-owned watch dealer Watchfinder & Co. noted in a report last year that five years ago 80% of counterfeit watches sent into its stores were easily identified as fake, with 20% needing closer inspection. Now those figures have been reversed.
And that’s bad news for people buying a watch from anywhere but the most legitimate of sources and a big problem for the watch world’s important and booming secondary market. While once a suspiciously low price was all anyone needed to infer that it was a fake that was being offered, now cannier sellers are pricing at a healthy but not idiotic discount to the real thing; and when this watch is later sold on again, this time the seller does so believing it to be genuine.
In short, the watch market is now flooded with fakes: some 40 million fakes are now circulated every year, according to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry. That’s around 25% more watches than the Swiss industry itself produces. Watches are among the most counterfeited products, representing around 30% of all counterfeit luxury goods.
Some argue that the industry isn’t helping itself by making its most desirable models so hard to buy, with some brands vetting
potential customers (insisting on them having a track record of buying from the brand) and others black-listing anyone known to have sold one of their watches on. No wonder some people will make do with a counterfeit, especially given their quality.
Certainly, if that suggests they could buy the real thing if the opportunity arose, there’s another twist in this tale. Received wisdom has it that the only reason anyone buys a counterfeit watch is that a genuine product is beyond their wallet. But research by Xuemei Bian, professor of marketing at Northumbria University in Newcastle, turns that idea on its head. This suggests that the reasons people in the developed world buy fakes are much more complex. For a minority it’s political. There is a sense of sticking it to the man - that buying a counterfeit is a way of kicking back against the makers of what might be perceived as ludicrously expensive status objects. For many more it’s all about fun, they say: you get to enjoy a counterfeit as one might fast fashion, the watch serving its purpose as a time-keeper for the few times it’s worn, while providing something to talk about down the pub. Bian compares it to the fact
Some 40 million fakes are now circulated every year, according to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry. That’s around 25% more watches than the Swiss industry itself produces
that many find it acceptable to buy (for a great discount) a counterfeit football shirt - for the few times it’s worn, it serves its purpose.
Others, she has found, revel in the thrill of naughtiness that buying a counterfeit watch gives them. Yet others enjoy what she calls the thrill of the hunt: they take pleasure in the research and buying process that will provide them with the very best fake available. There’s now an online world of forums built around a shared appreciation for the craft and effort that goes into the best counterfeit watches. Their members are, necessarily, extremely knowledgeable about watches, the real and the fake.
If once one bought a counterfeit and tried to pass it off as the real thing, Bian says there’s now a kind of pride in wearing one. Surely if a super-fake looks virtually identical and is of comparable quality, buying one instead of the genuine article and reaping just the same benefit of brand association is, of course, the sensible thing to do?
Indeed, by far the hardest idea for the Swiss industry to get its head around is that many fakes are bought by those who are their target audience: those who could buy - and who deeply appreciate - the real thing. Some do so to protect their investment: they keep the real watch at home and wear their copy day to day. Others find the fake just another, parallel way of interacting with the brands they like.
This leaves the high-end watch industry in something of a quandary. Making any appeal to the economic impact of counterfeits - the potential job losses, the hit taken to the bottom line - may be its
usual response but tends not to land with most consumers at all. Telling consumers that counterfeits are an affront to their intellectual property rings even more hollow - the corporate world is not one well placed to garner much sympathy these days. And, after all, it’s the power of the brand that makes a counterfeit appealing in the first place.
The industry also argues that counterfeit manufacturing is often a means of laundering money for much more serious crimes - drug and people trafficking among them. But, again, this is a hard case to make convincing to people who rather tend to see counterfeiting as a victimless crime, andlike art forgery or printing your own tenners - maybe even a slightly glamorous one. Most consumers of counterfeiters aren’t conscious of the potential legal penalties facing them - in most countries buying a counterfeit watch is, technically, illegal - let alone any wider ramifications for society. That’s a message the watch industry concedes it must do more to make people aware of.
There is, at least, one way it might fight back in this new era of the super-fake. That’s not, as Gueroux has argued, to introduce ever more complicated anti-counterfeiting measures. He says that the counterfeiters will always find ways around them. You just end up with an arms race with no end. Now, what legitimate watch manufacturers can do is improve their quality, push on their innovation in materials and design. It is, he says, the only way of beating the counterfeiters - to keep offering what they can’t.

Elysia Fryer chats to Holly Dark, co-founder of Longsands Clothing Co., to chat about the brand’s journey from market stalls to a thriving coastal lifestyle hub. With roots in the North East and a spirit of adventure, Longsands is redefining cool on Tyneside
Longsands Clothing Co. is rooted in the North Tyneside coastline. Founded over a decade ago by Holly Dark, her brother, and their friend John, this family-run business has become a beacon for those who love adventure, community, and the charm of the North East coast.
Combining California surf-style cool with a northern twist, Longsands Clothing Co. celebrates everything that makes this corner of the world unique - from its stunning landscapes to its hardy spirit.
“It all started at Tynemouth Market,” Holly starts.
“We’d get short runs of products printed locally and sell them on the weekends. Back then, it was about creating something that
spoke to us as locals, born and bred here on the coast.”
From those humble beginnings, Longsands evolved into a permanent store in Tynemouth’s iconic Land of Green Ginger.
The space was a launchpad, but Holly admits the brand quickly outgrew it.
“In 2019, we decided to merge two of our biggest passions: clothing and community.
That’s when Longsands Après was born - a hybrid of a cosy bar, cafe, and retail space inspired by ski resort culture.
“It’s somewhere you can sip a coffee, shop for a hoodie, and wind down with a cocktail - all under one roof.”
Longsands Après is a one-of-a-kind venue.
An uber cool hangout and shopping destination, it’s the kind of place where you might find locals perusing the latest
collection before settling into a corner with a craft beer.
“At first, people didn’t quite know what to make of it,” Holly laughs.
“But it’s become such a great community space. Our customers from the clothing side are now bar regulars, and vice versa. It all just works.”
Despite the challenges of opening just months before the first Covid lockdown, Holly and her team pivoted quickly.
“We turned into a takeaway hub for coffee, cake, and even beer, while ramping up online orders for the clothing. The community really rallied around us, which was amazing.”
This year, the team opened Chalet 86, an evolution of Après with a slightly different vibe.
“It’s our big sister bar,” Holly says.
“It’s still cosy, but bigger and more tailored to sports fans - with Sky Sports on the TV.”
The two venues work in harmony, offering customers the chance to bounce between them.
“You can’t buy clothing at Chalet 86, but it’s just across the road if you’re in the mood to shop,” she adds.
At its heart, Longsands is a celebration of the North East. From the breathtaking coastline to the untamed beauty of Northumberland, the region shapes every part of the brand.
“All our design, print, and embroidery work is done in Newcastle, and we collaborate with local illustrators,” Holly shares.
“We’re so proud to be from here, and I think that comes across in everything we do. The coastline, the cold weather, and the culture - it’s all woven into the fabric of the brand.”
Even their slogan, Made in the North, reflects this ethos.
“It’s a comfort to people,” Holly says.
“We get customers buying for family abroad or for their kids who have gone off to uniit’s like sending a little piece of home.”
Longsands Clothing Co. also prides itself on quality and sustainability. The brand’s collections - four seasonal drops a year - blend timeless design with ecofriendly materials.
“We use as many sustainable products as possible, from organic cotton to renewable energy in the printing process,” Holly explains.
“We want to offer something for everyone, from premium pieces to our essentials range, which is a bit more budget-friendly.”
For Holly, the secret to Longsands’ success lies in its people.
“We’ve got an amazing team - both behind the scenes and front of house,” she says.
“It’s a family business in every sense of the word, but it’s also a community. We wouldn’t be here without the incredible support of our customers.”
That community spirit is woven into
initiatives like the Mystery Box - a curated gift box for those who love the brand but can’t decide what to buy; and the Season Pass, a subscription service that offers exclusive perks like discounts and surprise items.
“It’s our way of giving back to the people who’ve supported us,” Holly says.
Looking ahead, the team is excited to expand the bar’s offerings with live music and buskers’ nights. “There’s such a strong live music scene in North Shields,” she says.
“We’d love to showcase local talent and create more opportunities for people to come together. It’s all about encouraging good times at the coast.”
Longsands Clothing Co. isn’t just about clothing; it’s about capturing the essence of the North East - its resilience, beauty, and sense of community. Whether you’re sipping a drink at Après, watching the match at Chalet 86, or pulling on one of their signature hoodies, Longsands offers a little slice of what makes this region so special.
As Holly puts it, “We want people to take a bit of the North East away with them, wherever they go. It’s about more than fashion - it’s a feeling.”
