We’re proud to say that’s been an achievement fulfilled over the past 25 years. In this magazine we include collaborations with some of our favourite photographers, make-up artists and fashion stylists who have helped us create some amazing collections, which showcase our creativity and love of what we do. We would like to give credit and thanks to Jack Eames, Megumi Matsuno and Clare Frith for their outstanding creativity and the passion that they’ve put into our collections to help bring our work to life.

THE VISIONARY:

ORIBE CANALES Once a bad-boy from Cuba, with movie-star good-looks and tattooed sleeves, now a hair legend, with a career that spans nearly four decades and continues to influence and inspire the world of fashion and beauty. Oribe’s work has graced the runways of nearly every well-known designer and the covers of almost all major glossy magazines around the world, as well as several international ad campaigns and commercials. He has collaborated with the globe’s leading photographers and has helped transform countless models, celebrities and icons.

LATE 1980s - collaborated with photographer Steven Meisel and makeup artist François Nars to form fashion’s dream team. Together they launched the ‘supermodel’ and the rise of today’s one-name wonders; the likes of Christy, Linda and Naomi. EARLY 1990s - joined forces with Gianni Versace, showcasing glamorous, Miami decadence - looks that have since become iconic in the fashion world. 1991 - opened his first salon at Elizabeth Arden on Fifth Avenue, New York. 1992 - asked by the Metropolitan Museum of Art to design hairpieces from papier-mâché for the reopening of the Costume Institute galleries. He spent months completing the wigs, which were specially-designed in Christy Turlington’s likeness. 1997 - joined Jennifer Lopez, who called for him after a childhood spent reading his name in fashion magazines, to shoot the cover of her first album, On the 6. He continued styling her as her career blossomed, helping to create her ‘JLo’ persona.

I N C O N V E R SAT I O N

THE JULESB FASHION EMPIRE WAS SET UP BY JULIAN AND RHONA BLADES SOME 30 YEARS AGO. OVER THE YEARS THEIR DESTINATION STORES - JULESB AND THE CONSERVATORY - HAVE SHARED A HISTORY WITH THE HOOKER & YOUNG SALONS IN TERMS OF LOCALITY AND ETHOS. THE H&Y CLIENT IS DEFINITELY THE JULESB CUSTOMER: DESIGN CONSCIOUS, TREND AWARE AND, WHEN THE MOMENT ARISES, A SAVVY SOCIALITE WHO LOVES TO DRESS UP AND BE DARING FOR HIGH DAYS AND HOLIDAYS. WE SAT DOWN AND SHARED A G&T WITH HUSBAND AND WIFE JULIAN AND RHONA TOGETHER WITH THEIR DAUGHTER HAYLEY, WHO HAS JOINED THE FAMILY BUSINESS.

SPEAKEASY

Gary & Michael talk business, instinct and passion with North East fashion team Julian, Rhona and Hayley Blades

MY: Where did it all begin for your business? JB: The business started 33 years ago. Rhona was a lecturer at a college of arts and technology. I was living in Germany. I was an agent for Barbour. We met, fell in love and after about three weeks decided to set up a business! Rhona was well versed in fashion design and I had a background in sales and had a bit of a business brain, so we thought we’d put the two together. We bought a shop called Pauline’s on Acorn Road in Jesmond which was selling up. We started a womenswear business which was instantly a success, so we went into menswear.

MY: So you’ve been together as long as the business? The same as us really.

RB: We started with Nicole Farhi – that was the bedrock of the business. Nobody had these brands. We brought in Hugo Boss for menswear when there were only six accounts in the whole country. Very quickly word spread and it became clear that what we were offering was different from what had been available beforehand.

GH: City centre vs suburbs for your business?

People always seem to think you have to be in the city centre to be successful – what was your experience?

JB: It’s the same mindset you have that we have in terms of location. It’s our demographic; the type of person we have is not attracted to a city centre location.

RB: We split the shop up and went into the city centre (Eldon Gardens) with an offer for a younger customer, but what we realised was that we enjoyed being in the suburbs. We couldn’t offer the same service in a city centre. >

SPEAKEASY

GH: How are the job roles split between you? JB: Hayley is in charge of creative and styling – that’s what she does.

MY: Hayley, coming into the business, is that always what you wanted to do?

HB: No! I wanted to be a vet! Then I realised that having a creative mind, rather than an academic brain, was in the family. I wasn’t into fashion as a teenager – but that all changed at 20-21 when I decided to go and work as a ranch hand in Montana. Mum said don’t do that – try and have a go at the family business. She said, you don’t know it yet, but you have an eye like me. Come and spend time with us. So, I did a six-month rotation in all the departments: orders, styling, editorial and buying.

JB: What was very important to us when she came in the business was that she had to earn the respect

HOW IT WORKS SIX ST EPS TO SENSATI ON A L SK I N 1 Detox After a thorough cleanse to remove makeup and surface oil and a mini facial massage to lift tension around the temples and jaw, the treatment begins with lymphatic drainage. Kelly applies a small amount of oil for some slip, before introducing the special HydroPeel tip to the skin. It’s gently glided over the skin, down past the the ears and towards the neck, in one relaxing, rhythmic movement, helping to drain toxins the way the body’s natural lymphatic system would.

2 Cleansing and exfoliation The skin’s surface is treated to some serious deep-cleaning - a step usually associated with precursory redness and irritation. But not this time. Using a slightly firmer hand, Kelly begins as she means to go on, gliding the HydroPeel tip over every nook and cranny, de-clogging pores in the T-zone, while pushing a blend clarifying botanicals and other skin-saving ingredients

THE AGE OF BEAUTY A new generation of strong and powerful women are showing the world that it’s sassy and sexy to live life to the max in their fifties and beyond We’re seeing the rise of the inspiring older woman who is confident, clever and with a style all her own. Cool mid-lifers are setting the scene. 50 is the new 30 and a beautiful hairstyle can be a crowning glory that reflects the fact that there’s never any need to hit a certain age then morph into a dull, boring version of your original self. More than ever before women of all ages are embracing life with a fresh attitude and a new found confidence that proudly proclaims; “I love myself!”

54

TIMELESS

Your personal style needs to be the right fit for you and it definitely isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach: in fact far from it. Yes, your look should be age appropriate but that doesn’t mean you have fewer options, you just need to make the right choices. A combination of sophistication and elegance is the key to portraying an inner confidence that looks strong, sassy and stylish to the watching world. >

55

TIMELESS

For many women, dying roots and shying away from their grey hair is a thing of the past and women are now embracing it. Grey - 50 shades or otherwise - is really having a moment as a hair colour of choice; you’ve even got the twentysomethings crying out for it, that’s how cool grey has become! But even if you don’t feel able to go all-out grey, then don’t fear, as colouring your grey just got a whole lot easier.

56

As women age it’s not just their hair that changes; skin tone can fade and colours which once flattered can start to look harsh. Colouring grey is all about choosing the right tone for your skin and creating a look that has a soft and blended natural feel. We’re here to work some magic and make gorgeous, shiny, fuller-looking hair a reality!

Operation bouncy blow-dry begins. Focusing on the roots, Tracey uses a large round barrel brush to start building volume - a good tip when trying to recreate big, salon-style texture at home. Our hair is long and we’re going for tousled ends, so she wraps sections of hair around mid-sized brushes and leaves them in to create a gentle wave.

Our fringe is dried into place and the brushes are removed, revealing soft, beachy waves. Because our hair is all one length, Tracey suggests we bring out the tongs to help mould the ends a little more, creating soft, bouncy curls - a cheat’s way of making you look like you have more hair. It’s where they forget the rigours of the day when they are greeted by their family of 15 dogs with their sometimes diva-ish demands of undivided love, affection, cuddles and walks. Top of the tree (she thinks anyway), is their stunning Great Dane, Bailey. This proud, statuesque dog has been a Crufts breed champion and definitely knows how to work a room. With fellow Great Danes, Scarlet and Angel, the trio towers above scampish pugs, Puddle and Pickle and mini wired daschunds Daisy and Dimple. Also part of the family is Jelly the Affenpinscher, but there’s no denying the utter cuteness of the English Bulldog gang. Mum is Muffin and her girls are Cookie, Crumpet and Ginger and boys, Jaffa and Jammie (see what they did there?). Lording over them all is the elder stateswoman of the gang: Cha Cha is an Italian Bolognese. At 17 years she’s the senior of the bunch. For Gary and Michael, life is one big juggle:jetting

PORTRAIT by HOOKER & YOUNG This winning collection is an honest and stripped back look at the modern man. Portrait is neither trend driven nor fashion focused but rather celebrates masculinity in today's world where style is individual and personal to you. By creating a feeling seen through the models eyes we were able to create some incredible thought provoking images which lets the hair and the boys be seen in a truly beautiful light.
