BRITISH HOOKER & YOUNG celebrate a decade of achievement as British Hairdresser of the Year nominees... here's an image from each of the ten collections

The British Hairdressing Awards has been part of our lives for pretty much as long as we can remember. The awards provide an incredible vehicle to show both our clients and the hairdressing industry our passion for hair. The BHA connects us to more people internationally than we could ever have imagined, and allows us to excite, motivate and inspire our team to go on and achieve amazing success. Winning awards is the best validation of what we do and brings an amazing sense of

achievement. It is an honour to be recognised among such a high level of talented people. We feel very proud to be able to set an example for our team and in turn lead them to success. In 2008 we were nominated for the prestigious ‘British Hairdresser Of The Year’ which is without doubt the highest accolade within the hairdressing industry. We never thought that ten years later we would gain our tenth consecutive nomination - which is incredibly humbling for us and a huge achievement. Here we highlight some of our best moments in celebrating ten years of ‘The Best Of British’.

TERRY LAYBOURNE IS THE MAN WHO CREATED A ‘FOOD SCENE’ IN NEWCASTLE, LONG BEFORE THE DAYS OF STREET FOOD AND CRAFT BREWERIES. HE LAID THE FOUNDATIONS FOR QUALITY FOOD IN THE CITY, BRINGING THE FIRST MICHELIN STAR TO TYNESIDE AT HIS 21 QUEEN STREET RESTAURANT. FROM THERE, HE DEVELOPED THE 21 HOSPITALITY GROUP, WHICH NOW EMBRACES SOME OF THE BEST-LOVED EATING PLACES IN NEWCASTLE THAT CONTINUE TO GAIN INDUSTRY AWARDS AND ACCOLADES. HIS WIFE, SUSAN, HAS ALWAYS PLAYED A PIVOTAL ‘BACK ROOM’ ROLE IN THE BUSINESS, AND EVEN NOW, IN THEIR EARLY SIXTIES WITH AN IDYLLIC COUNTRY HOME IN THE TYNE VALLEY, THE COUPLE SHOW NO SIGN OF SLOWING DOWN.

I was initially brought in as a consultant to help with logistics and menus etc for what become Fuego and Mason + Rye, but soon got sucked in to the whole project. Eventually I agreed to take on the retail fishmonger, which I developed further into a fishmonger/fish kitchen, which we ended up naming Saltwater Fish Company. “It was our job to explore and interpret the trends in our own, creative way,” says Jonathan. “These were ‘natural kei’, which is all about movement and a natural finish, ‘vintage kawaii’, which focuses on 90s-inspired styles and textures, such as bunches, braids and crimping, ‘samurai strength’, which is all about bold looks with strong, hard hold and, finally, ‘shittori texture’, which is essentially a high-shine wet look.” The result was a stunning collection of high-fashion images that soon went global, catching the eyes of beauty and fashion-lovers all over the world.

CONFIDENT COLOUR Love your length with luscious colour, va-va-volume and styling that spells confidence - and then some!

ON POINT

What does it mean to be older? You’re no longer in awe of anyone rich, gorgeous or ridiculously intelligent. You don’t feel the need to sunbathe every time the sun comes out. You no longer complain about your other half, but rather come up with strategies to keep them alive. You start to appreciate yourself...and the new confident you has a great sense of style and kick ass attitude to match.

41

ON POINT

With beauties like Julia Roberts, Michelle Pfeiffer and Julianne Moore all embracing life in their 50s we are seeing a new wave of women defining what it means to be ‘older’. It’s about celebrating individuality, and most importantly being comfortable in your own skin. Covering your grey hair shouldn’t have to feel like you’re wearing a badge. Colour should be classy, sophisticated and natural to make you feel gorgeous!

Working at lower temperatures, they have been expertly-developed to create a range of eyecatching styles, while causing as little damage or stress to the hair as possible. The Dryer makes bouncy blow-drys a breeze. Equipped with Quick Dry Air Flow and Whispertek silence technology, it is one of Wahl’s quietest, yet most powerful and efficient, hairdryers yet. It also comes with Multi-speed Air Control and two nozzles, giving stylists the freedom to create a number of versatile styles, along with a Turbo Heat switch and Cool Shot ‘Style Lock’ button to ensure long-lasting results. The brilliance continues with the Iron; a reliable, kind-to-hair straightener, with instant touch controls, that provides the perfect balance between speed and control. This is key for us and other salons out there. “They have a professional edge; they perform to the highest standard and look good, too. Everything from the sleek, multi-layered boxes they come in, to the beautiful leather pouch they come with, just screams luxury. We’ve always put a lot of thought and effort into presentation and packaging at Hooker & Young, so it was important to us that these tools looked the best they could. After all, it’s all part of the retail experience and thrill of purchasing products.” Following an exciting UK tour, during which Gary and Michael showcased the Wahl Style Collection to professionals up and down the country, highlighting the tools’ versatility and unbeatable performance, the pair have high hopes for the range’s success. “We have no doubt that the new Wahl Style

LIGHT FANTASTIC

Whether it's splash lights, baby lights, or balayage there’s no denying that blonde in all its guises is still the most popular in-salon hair colour. With so many creative ways of applying colour now, your look can be as individual as you. Dark shadows and a deeper root can create amazing texture and definition while face-framing threads of pale blond can bring a youthful luminosity to the skin.
