Mega manor

Hip Hall Inspired by the Alice in Wonderland adage of all the best people being entirely bonkers, Charlton Hall’s mantra champions the norm with its quirky interiors. We take a peek inside the newlyopened, revamped property… As the saying goes, looks can be deceiving - and Charlton Hall proves it. From the outside, it’s everything you imagine a listed, 18th-century building to look like: grand and stately, with unmistakable Georgian features. But venture inside and it’s a completely different story. Open the doors of this funky Northumberland manor and you’re catapulted into a bold, off-the-wall world, brought to life with flamboyant decor and an abundance of luxurious interiors. Banker-turned-investor, Richard Shell, the chap behind award-winning wedding venue, Doxford Barns, snapped the eight-bed stunner up last May and has spent the last year transforming it into the personality-packed pad it is today. Thanks to his vision, what was once a traditional-but-tired family estate is now a hip, new playground for private parties, exclusive events and glamorous, modern-day weddings, set over three floors and nestled within 150 acres of private land. The results of its makeover, spearheaded by Jo Aynsley, of award-winning Jeffries Interiors in Edinburgh, do nothing but pull you in and lift you up. Having expertly mixed tradition with statement-making colours and modern, daring design, Jo has created a vibrancy that can be felt in every room of this playful property - whether you’re laying your head in one of the eight, individually-designed suites, partying the night away in the underground bar, or saying “I do” in the warmth of thousands of twinkling fairy lights, while your guests watch on from their transparent, glass-like chairs. Many of the building’s historic features and rustic antiques, such as the wooden floors, baroque fireplaces and Victorian sports trophies have been preserved, intertwined with heaps of contemporary, arty features. Things like gold graffiti, neon signage, giant silver bauble lights and leopard-print armchairs, plus signature pieces from big-name designers - everyone from Matthew Williamson, to Mulberry, Diane von Furstenberg and Kate Spade - to bespoke artwork from Newcastle-based artist, Vanessa Foley. “Our vision is to give guests a fun and luxurious home-from-home experience. It was my aim to bring the hall back to life as an enchanting place for people to create lasting memories and entertain,” says owner, Richard Shell. INTERIORS ESSENTIALS SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 18

Hall highlights

The Entrance Hall

Why we love it: The marriage of ivory-white with glittering gold and silver is a dreamy mix. The light installations, by Tom Dixon, together with the neon ‘Hell Yeah’ neon sign command attention, while the peony carpet, luring you up the sweeping staircase, and stuffed giraffe head add personality.

The Library

Why we love it: House of Hackney upholstery and bespoke velvet seating, hand-made leather chairs in vibrant yellow and cool bee cushions from emerging designer, Gung-Ho. A vibrant room with tongue-in-cheek artwork and a modern take on the classic chandelier.

The Bedrooms

Why we love them: All of the eight spacious suites are named after owner Richard’s nearest and dearest - and all have their own cheeky personality. Individually-designed and styled, they’re all unique, too. Here a few of our favourites… ALFIE - A masculine suite, bold and blue, with contrasting pops of orange, rainbow-coloured paisley wallpaper and industrial-style lamps. CHARLOTTE - The playful and seductive honeymoon suite, tucked away in the quieter part of the hall. Neon ‘kiss me’ signage, tassel wall lights, peacock side tables, with splashes of hot pink, a freestanding bath (big enough for two) and sparkling chandeliers. ELLA - A sunny space. We love the rose gold silk curtains, city-scape patterned walls, yellow Jim Thompson Bargello throws on the double twin beds and the statement wallpaper in the en-suite from Yellow House of Hackney Empire. LYDIA - A bold and daring boudoir, made striking with Manuel Canovas Dara wallpaper, fuchsia silk curtains and zebra-print chairs. One of the hall’s most eye-catching suites.

The Dining Room

Why we love it: The gold, geometric wallpaper, by Harlequin Sumi, on the ceiling, the original Grade II floorboards, the hand-painted graffiti that travels down the walls courtesy of renowned artist, Lynsey Jean Henderson, and the wall of dazzling, tiled mirrors. Pineapples and playful artwork add the fun-factor.

The Lounge

Why we love it: The lounge’s godly canopy - wallpaper from La Maison Pierre Frey, depicting scenes from the works of Francois Boucher and Giambattista Tiepolo - will have you constantly looking up. We love the original grand piano, baroque fireplace and marble flower table.

The Ceremony Hall

Why we love it: What was once an 18th-century stone barn is now an enchanting place to tie the knot. Striking, geometric floor patterns swoon you in, as do the walls, draped in fairy lights. Standout features are the cool, transparent chairs, which reflect and refract the surrounding light, and the blooming living wall.

5 minutes with... Jo Aynsley

A few quotes helped guide me through the design process… two were from Jonathan Alders’ Colour book - “the glamour of white” and “gold is bold, silver is kinky” and then there was Lewis Caroll’s “you’re mad, bonkers, off your head. But I’ll tell you a secret - all of the best people are.” It sums up the vibe Richard and I strove to create. The main goal was to create an Alice down the rabbit hole “playground” a place for guests to enjoy themselves on their terms, by their rules.

It was extremely important to preserve the Hall’s original features… after all, these are part and parcel of its character. But I think the mix of old and new works so well. So many people gasp at the portrait in the dining room - as if someone has just attacked it with a pink paintbrush - but it’s meant to be like that! Pushing the boundaries and not being afraid to be playful has made the Hall a totally unique venue.

The bedrooms are named after children in Richard’s family… and since all children have their own personalities and quirks, I wanted to reflect this in the design. All of the suites are completely different and special in their own way. I also wanted to quietly influence guests’ views on wallpaper - into trusting that a whole room wallpapered isn’t something to be scared of. Gone are the days of the ‘feature wall’! The Ceremony Hall only adds to Charlton Hall’s appeal as a one-off, Northumbrian wedding destination… we wanted to pay homage to its humble beginnings as a stable barn, so we decided to leave the stone walls exposed and hang on to the beamed ceiling - they both add a bit of rustic charm. The sea of fairy lights, monochrome flooring and flower wall add a touch of high, modern glamour - a real contrast!

Some of my favourite elements of the Hall are… the pink carpet on the staircase, the gold details that bring the architecture to life, the silver bubble lights in the entrance hall and, of course, George - the stuffed giraffe at the top of the staircase. I could happily make the Hall my own home and live there!

Wow walls

We love the striking wooden apple wall feature - handmade by a local carpenter!

In the quiet farm hamlet of Tughall Steads, near Newton-by-the-Sea, lies The Apple Store - a cool, contemporary cottage, where bold design and cosy interiors come together under one recently-revamped roof. Perfectly-positioned down a country lane and cocooned by tranquil, open farmland, it’s a neat getaway for families and groups of chums in search of a bit of solitude this autumn/winter. Outdoorsy types will love its whereabouts. Beadnell and Bamburgh beaches - top destinations for sandy strolls - are mere moments away by car and the surrounding countryside provides the perfect backdrop for gentle, afternoon hikes and wanders at sunset. There’s also tons of garden space to enjoy - as well as a fruit orchard

(which inspired the name) if you fancy some apple-picking fun. But it’s equally as impressive inside. Following weeks of renovation earlier this year, what was once a small, tired cottage is now a bright and inviting holiday home, with enough room for seven. Walls have been knocked down and bold choices have been made when it comes to furnishings, textiles and colours and the results are an interiors lover’s dream. Here a few of our favourite spaces inside this hip holiday home… www.coastalretreats.co.uk

Book it now This November, the North East will play host to Northern Quarters Interiors Festival - a day-long celebration of the region’s growing interiors community…

18 NOVEMBER 2 018 11:00 AM 4:00 PM

What to expect

Northern Quarters Interiors Festival promises an inspiring day for the North East’s homeware addicts, budding renovators and dedicated decorators. Bringing together key players from the region’s thriving interiors community - from creative interior designers and small, independent businesses, to furniture-makers and stylish online influencers - it will give guests a chance to mix and mingle with likeminded space-transformers, pick up expert hints and tips and see (and buy) some seriously goodlooking works.

Where to go

The action will be taking place at St Mary’s Heritage Centre - a unique and breathtakingly-beautiful visitor attraction-turned-events-space - in Gateshead on 18 November. Sitting high above the River Tyne, close to Sage Gateshead, the Grade I-listed building used to be a church, but following a £1.2 million makeover, it’s now open to the public and runs an exciting programme of creative, arty exhibitions throughout the year. Who to see

The festival will shine a light on homegrown talent during five fun-packed hours, filled with carefully-curated exhibitions and inspiring talks from North East natives doing big things. Local names showcasing their work include Newcastle-based artist/ designer, Susi Bellamy, whose luxury fabrics, cushions, wallpaper and lampshades are adorned with her vibrant paintings, and Sarah Piper, who utilises driftwood and seaweed to create cool ceramics, inspired by the North East coast. One of the region’s biggest Instagram-influencers, Kerry Lockwood, will be sharing her success story, while Cathy Dean of Cathy Dean Interiors will be dishing out expert tricks of the trade and hosting a not-to-be-missed Q&A session. Guests will also get to meet upcycler and blogger, Cheryl Lumley, who, together with the folk from Re-styled by St Oswald’s Hospice (the charity’s upcycled furniture boutique in Newcastle), will be sharing ideas on how to get creative with second-hand, planet-saving pieces.

Meet the organisers

Katie, left, and Lucy

Lucy Hull

Lucy and her husband, Paul, set up their website, www.fortheloveofthenorth.co.uk, in early 2017, to showcase locally-made gifts, cards and prints. They opened their first store, under the same name, in Whitley Bay, a few months later, and now stock work from over 50 different North East creatives. “We’re regularly approached by local people who would like to be stocked in the shop, but unfortunately not all of their amazing work fits in with the vibe of the shop, which pictorially celebrates our wonderful region.” “I became more and more aware of just how many creatives there are working within our region, producing amazing stuff, often related to interiors. I wanted the opportunity to work with them and showcase their talents - and, so, the idea to organise a local interiors festival was born.”

Katie Lee

Katie is a freelance photographer, specialising in interiors. She lives in Earsdon, not far from Whitley Bay, and spends her days shooting gorgeous homes for national interiors magazines, such as Real Homes, 25 Beautiful Homes and Ideal Home. “Through my work, I meet a lot of people from the interiors world and they always say that nothing ever really happens in the North East; there are no big events dedicated to interiors and no real opportunities for local people to showcase their talent,” she says. “Through Northern Quarters, Lucy and I want to encompass the whole interiors community; mixing professional designers, artists, local makers and shop-owners with the general public and bringing everyone together under one roof. The festival will be one big celebration of what the North East has to offer to the world of interior design.”

Don’t miss!

If having a nosey around someone else’s home sounds like your idea of heaven, then you’ll be delighted to hear that guests will have the chance to visit some of the amazing homes transformed by Kerry Lockwood and Cathy Dean, and photographed by organiser, Katie. After opening the doors to their prize pads, owners will give guests a tour of their favourite rooms, nooks and crannies, showing off their most-loved furniture, accessories, bits and pieces. A chance to meet the people behind the homes - and the Instagram snaps. Interiors fans and aspiring lifestyle bloggers can also meet Kerry Lockwood at Fenwick Newcastle on 30 September. Head to BoConcept, on the Second Floor, where Kerry will be hosting a presentation and inspiring talk about how to run a successful Instagram page and the latest interior design trends. The event is from 6pm-8pm and tickets are £25, redeemable on selected purchases. Head to www.fenwick.co.uk for more info.

Northern Quarters will be taking place at St Mary’s Heritage Centre, Gateshead, on 18 November. For more information, or to book tickets, visit www.northernquarters.uk

Kerry Lockwood Kerry Lockwood turned her passion for interiors into a thriving business back in 2016. Fast-forward two years and she’s now one of the region’s biggest Instagraminfluencers, with over 60,000 followers. She’ll be sharing her success story and dishing out advice on how you can grow your own Instagram account at Gateshead’s Northern Quarters Festival on 18 November.

It all started when we had to relocate for my husband’s job… rather than selling our house, we decided to rent it out and find somewhere new to rent ourselves. I began doing more and more decorating and renovating to both properties, which led to family, friends and friends-of-friends asking for help and advice on their own homes. That’s when I decided to set up my website and charge for my services.

My blog is my own little corner of the web… I set it up so I could document before-and-after photos and write posts, advising tenants on how they could make their rented house feel like home. I then began posting photos on Instagram and it all kind of took off from there.

Every day is different, which is what I love about my job… it varies from working with clients on their homes, which includes initial consultations through to mood-boards, sourcing and installation, through to product styling, photographing and editing photos for brand collaborations.

My love of interiors started when we bought our own house… only then did I realise how strong my passion was and how much I loved transforming spaces. Today, I work on all kinds of homes, from new-build properties, through to period-style houses. I also work with property developers on large, home-share developments.

reflect the personalities of the people that live there. Having said that, I do have to try to keep up-to-date with them for my clients. For autumn/ winter 2018, I think the use of natural materials, such as exposed brick, reclaimed wood and concrete, are going to be much more popular, along with lots of darker, rich and cosy interiors.

The kitchen is the heart of our home… It’s the place where we all sit and reconnect after a busy day. We sit round my old vintage workbench for dinner and share the good and bad parts of our day.

When I’m not transforming people’s homes, I love spending time with my family… I have two children who keep me busy and

Get to know

Cathy Dean With over 10 years of experience and one seriously good-looking portfolio under her belt, Cathy Dean has become one of the region’s biggest names in the world of interior design. Ideas are born under the roof of her independent design studio in rural Northumberland and, from there, she and her team travel all over Newcastle, Northumberland and Edinburgh, passionately transforming people’s homes into show-stopping spaces. See her at Gateshead’s Northern Quarters Interiors Festival on 18 November, where she’ll be hosting a Q&A session and sharing her top tips on how to revamp your home.

Before I set up on my own in 2012, I was designing in London, which gave me a great foundation… but after having my daughter, I was keen to return home to the North East and set up my own business. It was a leap of faith, but three and a half years later, with an office, staff and a growing client base, I can safely say the appetite for interior design up here is huge - and I’m loving being a part of it.

For as long as I can remember, I have loved buildings in all forms…Architecture, interiors, construction, extensions, new, old, knackered or glistening - they all intrigue me. My dad is an architect and I grew up helping him survey: working for him in the summer holidays, copying and tracing technical drawings and colouring his ideas by hand. I spent many days on building sites holding the other end of a tape measure!

If there is a typical week at work, I’ve never seen one… Office days are spent working on layouts, pulling together samples and creating visuals and mood boards. On sourcing days, we tour the country finding new products and meeting suppliers. During ‘on-site’ days, we try our best to get the tradesmen on-board with our vision and share plans with them to make our ideas come to life. We also have styling and sourcing days, when our cars become filled with plants, pictures and throws to make a room look and feel much more like a home. from flats in Newcastle and Jesmond, to seaside homes in Bamburgh, coastal terraces, holiday lets, three-bed semis, and seven-bed mansions. Even though the properties vary, the approach never does. We know this is our client’s home - it’s their biggest investment - and it’s our job to make it exactly as they’d hoped it could be.

Today, home is a barn in rural Northumberland shared with my husband, daughter and chickens… it’s a very traditional place from the outside, but the inside is all my own style. It’s our oasis; a home friends and family feel welcomed into, where you want to kick off your shoes and have a cuppa.

My portfolio varies massively…

I’m a workaholic, so my home office is my favourite space… the ‘feel’ in there is so important to me. It has to do so many things: make me productive, creative, inspired, organised and, most of all, happy. It’s seen many overhauls, but at the moment it’s super dark green, with walnut woods and industrial metal furniture - I adore it.

The first flat I owned was in Crystal Palace, London. It was a tiny, one-bed in a Victorian mansion block… on my first

viewing the estate agent refused to come in because the smell was so bad. It stank, but it also had floor-to-ceiling windows, beautiful period features and, most importantly, potential. It’s where the journey began, we refurbed it ourselves, learning to plumb, tile and lay flooring - as well as fitting a kitchen! We took it all on and made that smelly flat, fantastic.

Our favourite feature: While the open-plan, live-in kitchen forms the heart of the home, we’re loving the luxurious living room. The big corner sofa is the place to be to enjoy a lazy afternoon. Complete with cosy cushions and throws, guests can warm up in front of the log burner as the sun sets over Bambrugh Castle. INTERIORS ESSENTIALS SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 18

Tucked behind L. Robson & Sons smokery, we can’t think of a better location for this coastal gem. Our favourite feature: Entering through a stone archway and with exposed beams and an original fireplace inside, there are period features galore in this gorgeous cottage. We love the white-washed interiors and the seaside touches in the loft bedrooms. www.coastalretreats.co.uk

TOP TRENDS Want to know what’s hot for autumn/winter 2018? Michelle Nugent, showroom manager at Greatlook Design Studio, shares her trend predictions…

In the know

FOR THE LESS ADVENTUROUS, PASTELS, COUPLED WITH A PALETTE OF GREY AND WOOD-EFFECT FINISHES, WILL BE A SAFER APPROACH WITH GREATER LONGEVITY Materials and finishes

Kitchen trends for this autumn will concentrate on natural, contrasting timbers and veneers, a variety of textures with a nod towards the ‘industrial look’ and adventurous, bold colours. For the less adventurous, pastels, coupled with a palette of grey and wood-effect finishes, will be a safer approach. Pastel blue, yellow, pink and green add the wow-factor.

Two colours, two-tones and single colour pallettes

Colour pallettes will have a strong emphasis on contrasting, two-colour designs, which enhances features.

Zones, hide-and-seek and free-standing furniture

The desire for islands, banquette seating and free-standing furniture will remain strong throughout the season. Things like butchers blocks and open shelving are set to become increasingly popular with homeowners, allowing them to add their own personal touches and more texture. A rise in open-plan living has also driven the necessity to move towards hidden storage in all rooms of the house, so I envision lots of that, too.

Illuminating lighting

Statement lighting will be an ongoing trend throughout autumn/ winter. When used effectively, lighting can add layers, depth, warmth and contrast.

Colours

Hot colour trends for autumn/winter include earthy hues, such as luxurious dark green, along with navy and chocolate tones. As mentioned, pastels will return as the ‘new neutrals’, and metal hues, such as gold and brass, will prove to be popular accents, too.

Wallpaper

Textured wallpaper is set to be the ‘in-thing’ as we head towards the end of the year. Patterns will be more daring, contemporary and imaginative.

Vintage mixed with contemporary

Expect a mix of old and new throughout the season, whether through colours, fabrics or furniture. There was a time when ‘clashing’ was deemed as a sin in the interiors world, but for autumn/winter 2018, it’s all about the mix!
