Rather than look back at 2020, let us look forward to 2021 with the promise that a new year can bring. During the next few months we will see the tide turn against COVID-19 and we will be able to enjoy our lives as we did before. That means we will be able to enjoy all that Durham has to offer. What is more, you will be able to see the changes that have continued to breathe life into the city; the new shops that are opening and the construction that provides assurance of Durham’s bright future. In this edition of Life InDurham, we will start to detail what you can
expect to be able to do in Durham during the year ahead. 2021 is going to be a fantastic year to rediscover our beautiful city. This is where I now bid you farewell. I am leaving Durham BID and the city at the beginning of March. I have to say that I shall miss Durham considerably; everything it has to offer and all that I am passionate about. My time as manager of Durham BID has been an absolute privilege. I have learnt much, admired many and appreciated it all. Durham really is an incredible place in which to live, study, visit and work. Parking made easy in 2021! More positive developments continue to steam into the city! We’ve just learned that our lovely Durham Railway Station has now added 50% more parking spaces following the completion of a new two-level car park in recent weeks. It’s an ideal spot to park when you’re back visiting the city centre, and with 147 more long-stay spaces dotted about, you don’t need to worry about bagging that last spot.

We’ve just learned that The Times’ Higher Education (THE) World University rankings has recently placed Durham University in the Top 20 for Arts and Humanities! Ranking 19th out of 565 universities across the globe, it’s a great way to shout about the fantastic work that comes out of our uni! Light at the end of the tunnel: Lumiere Returns in 2021 18 - 21 November
Proudly made in Durham, Lumiere is set to illuminate the city once again for four nights from 18 – 21 November. Following 2019’s special anniversary festival celebrating 10 years since the first ever Lumiere in 2009, festival producers, Artichoke, are working on a brand-new programme of artworks and installations. The festival’s commissioning scheme, BRILLIANT, will also return. Durham Distillery Positive news radiating out of the city! We’ve learned that work on Durham Distillery’s new HQ is nearing completion and we hope you’re as excited as we are! Later this year, the team will be moving into a 6,000 sq ft space in Prince Bishops, and this hip new HQ will have a shop, ticket office for brewery tours, a huge still room, bar and visitor space! Over the last few years, with lots of hard work and passion for distilling, the DD team has managed to create a place that isn’t just about promoting their brand, but a place where you can visit, converse with the experts, learn about craft spirits and develop your sense of connoisseurship. Durham Distillery are proud of their DH1 roots, and their love for the city is reflected in everything that leaves the premises. They’ve even created their own representation of the Rose Window inside Durham Cathedral. Make sure you check it out when exploring the city this year. Ravishing red velvet
A quick, easy and delicious recipe from our friends at Hatters. This one will set pulses racing for Valentine’s Day. Aprons at the ready lovers... INGREDIENTS: 320g plain flour ½ tsp salt 20g cocoa powder 115g butter 300g caster sugar 2 eggs 240ml buttermilk 1 tsp vinegar

1 tsp bicarb of soda 2 tsp of vanilla essence Red (gel) food colouring Frosting ingredients: 175g unsalted butter 450g cream cheese (full fat) 660g icing sugar 2 tsp of vanilla essence
METHOD: • Set the oven to 170 °C to preheat. • Sieve, mix and add the flour and cocoa powder into a bowl and set to one side. • Add butter and sugar into a bowl with cream. • Thoroughly combine one egg into the mixture. • Add vanilla to buttercream and stir well. • Add red food colour to buttercream. Add enough to make the mixture vibrant scarlet red, this colour will fade during the cooking process. • Mix vinegar into baking soda and add to the mixing bowl. • Add remaining dry ingredients and buttermilk mixture one tablespoon at a time, alternating between the two sets of ingredients, until combined. • Split the mixture between two
lined cake tins and bake in the oven for roughly 30 minutes. • Leave cake in the tin to cool. • While your cake cools, begin work on your frosting by beating room temp butter until pale yellow. • Add half of the icing sugar and combine. Then add the second half as well as vanilla and ensure all is thoroughly combined. • Add in room temp cream cheese and stir well before adding to your cake. Voilà! *TOP TIP* - To check if your cake is done, gently press on the centre and hopefully your red velvet beauty should bounce straight back! To ensure your cake is fully cooked, poke a cocktail stick in the centre of the cake. If it comes out clean then the cake is done. Result!

Community is key! As the pandemic tested us, we were overjoyed to see a resurgence in community spirit. Businesses helping businesses, people helping people - it’s something we’re all determined to take into our every day life. We caught up with Sam and James, two big names when it comes to business in Durham, who reminded us why the DH community is at the top of their agendas heading into 2021… The day job…
I am responsible for 85 colleagues from our customer assistants to shift leaders and team managers. I also have a nights team and a nights manager who are absolutely vital to the running of the store who do an excellent job. Without them, we couldn’t operate! I see my role split into three parts: Looking after colleagues: I have 12 direct reports -three team managers and nine shift leaders. My role isto ensure I lead and engage my team to ensure we create a working environment that all of our colleagues would recommend a great place to work. I spend my day on the shop-floor as much as possible speaking and engaging with my team, listening as much as possible to any issues to ensure my store has a brilliant culture. Happy colleagues = happy customers! Looking after customers: Ensuring that the customer shopping trip is at the highest standards possible, keeping customers safe and keeping customers happy with a warm and friendly service. Walking my store daily promoting and engaging my team to review three key points on a daily basis: Is it full? Is it Clean? Has it got a price? My job is to ensure I look after my colleagues so they can look after our customers. Reviewing the shopping trip for my customers through our technology and feedback material and ensuring we react and improve, as well as reward and recognise. Tesco Durham Market Place is absolutely

a place to support and help the local community and business in whatever way I can. Looking after Tesco: I represent the brand and I have overall accountability to run my business and ensure that I deliver for the business by looking after my colleagues, looking after my customers and offering a fantastic customer shopping trip.
A day in the life…
Every day I will fully walk my store wall to wall, speak to every colleague possible, clear the emails, attend the new way of life on video calls, keep up to date on business activity and more importantly, listen and review my customer feedback on a daily basis. This is my first store in a city centre an I absolutely love the buzzy city vibes. It is very different to any other store outside a city with different trade patters and customer expectations and habits. I love being able to walk out the door and be in such a lovely place. I have tried to meet every local business in the square and will be keen to meet more, again helping and supporting the local community in anyway I can.
What Durham means to me…
I would describe Durham as a growing, fast paced, but relaxing city. On a sunny day the views are amazing. The city is so natural but it has such a modern outlook and vibe. I am so proud

Community is so important to us at Tesco. We have so many projects and we try to get involved in as much community activity as possible in any store. We are here to support our local community as much as possible, from small to big.
We’re different to others because…
We actively promote and ask to be a part of the local community. We open our doors at 7am to serve commuters and those looking to pick up a daily newspaper, and we close our doors at 10pm, to ensure that we are serving that city worker who is popping in for their evening shop before heading home for the day.
We pride ourselves on… Being the biggest retailer at the heart of the city with the goal of helping and supporting our local community.
Doing our bit for the community during the pandemic…
We have an amazing project called ‘Bags of Help’ which runs all year, allowing customers to vote with a blue token after every transaction. The customer votes for one of three local charities or organisations. Sadly, this isn’t currently live due to COVID-19, however, this will start up again as soon as it’s safe and responsible to do so. I took over this store at the end of September. Since then we have made parcel drops around the square to local businesses, flower drops to the local community on Mother’s Day during lockdown, we had a four day food bank collection, donated to various charities and groups, a toy donation for the Salvation Army. I have had numerous video calls with Adam Deathe, representatives from Durham University and Durham OnAir radio station to keep building relationships and find out how else we can help. If there are any organisations, groups or businesses out there who would like our support, please do let me know. We’d love to hear from you!

The day job…
I work as an actor, magician, Escape Room creator and radio host.
A day in the life…
My day starts around 6am, where I begrudgingly pull myself out of bed wondering why it's still dark! I make a cuppa and take a look on social media to see if any news has broken overnight, especially concerning Durham and the North East. By 7am I'm in the studio with my co-presenter, Joe as we host ‘Durham Breakfast’’ til 9am on Durham OnAir. The rest of the morning is spent answering emails, planning content, interviewing people in Durham with regard to community interest stories, or chatting to our partners in Durham. The afternoon is spent working on creative projects for the radio station, or theatrical events that are part of our group of companies, keeping in touch with what's happening across the county and updating our news feeds. We also plan the music for the following day’s show and work on spreading the word about Durham OnAir.
What Durham means to me…

I'm a Durham lad born and bred. I've lived in Manchester and London as an adult, but I always find myself returning home. It's an amazing place with wonderful people. The city is unlike any other. It needs protecting and it needs the support of local people to ensure Durham is a cultural and retail hub for generations to come. Where else can you get a beautiful coastline, medieval cities, mining villages, cinemas, theatres, football grounds, dales, waterfalls and stunning countryside, all in the same county? It's incredible. I grew up here and I can't imagine ever leaving for good. It saddened me that Durham was no longer being represented in the media. Durham lost its local radio station in March 2020, so we spent lockdown planning to fix that. Durham OnAir launched on November 5th and I'm thrilled we've been able to bring local radio and representation back to Durham. It’s what we’re all about!
The Durham community is key to us… The Durham community is the entire reason we exist. Durham was not being served by existing media. Durham has so much going on in terms of culture, retail,
business, events - and yet there was no local radio station for Durham, about Durham. Our community needs to have a place to share good news, discuss events, promote businesses and hear about what is going on in and around the city and wider region. We want to be the first stop for people living and working in County Durham.
We’re different to others because… We're all about Durham! Other radio stations are focussed on the bigger towns and cities of Newcastle, Sunderland and Middlesbrough. We play music that people want to listen to whilst covering the stories that matter to them. We work with hugely talented presenters to offer great entertainment. We have fantastic broadcasters like Sue Sweeney, who has brought her long-running show to Durham OnAir for the people of County Durham to enjoy. It’s such a treat and we’re thrilled to be a part of something new and exciting!

Being local and positive! We want to promote Durham and show it for the amazing county that it is. We're all about promoting the region and the city and, more importantly, being there to entertain and give a voice to the people who live here.

It’s safe to say that 2020 was a tough year for all, especially those who live alone or who have been unable to see their friends, family and colleagues. At Durham OnAir, we want to be able to provide a friendly, local voice where people can come and chat, let off some steam, and just enjoy great music.
