blue sky thinking
In the clouds Look North weather presenter Hannah Bayman couldn’t calm the skies for her own big day – but that didn’t dampen any spirits. She tells Kathryn Armstrong about her city-meets-country day

blue sky thinking
T
he night before her wedding day Hannah Bayman’s heart sank. Her head had been immersed in weather charts at work at BBC Look North from the Monday before her big day. “I couldn’t believe I had to broadcast a weather warning for heavy rain for the day of my own wedding. It was dry when we came into the church, but it poured down when we came out. The umbrellas look quite fun in the photos though,” she admits. Hannah married Charlie Tahir, a molecular biologist from Newcastle at St Andrew’s Church in her family village of Heddon-on-the-Wall, complete with a Brownie and Guide guard of honour. She’d been planning the big day since last September when Charlie took her for a day out to the Northumberland coast, including ice cream at Amble, dinner at Craster and some stargazing near Alnwick – and a proposal with a diamond ring made just after he dropped her home at the end of the evening. THE DETAILS Hannah’s dress was made by Auriole B, based in North Shields. “She only does a handful of dresses every year and is excellent, with an incredible eye for details. We designed it together. It was empire-line, in silk and chiffon with a lace bodice. It had a gaudet at the back – like a big flounce made of chiffon – to add a bit of swish without having a long train. I loved it!”
i had to broadcast a weather warning for my own wedding day THE PEOPLE She had four bridesmaids: Hannah’s best friend D Stasiak, who was matron-of-honour. Rachel Foley, a good friend from the BBC. Eda Yardimici, Charlie’s cousin, and Katy Yelland, her dad’s partner’s daughter. D’s 11-year-old daughter Zozi was flower girl and as well as scattering confetti she also played solo on the violin while the register was signed. The song was a traditional Jewish folk song called “Congratulations to the Groom and Bride”. Charlie’s best man was Graham Smith, his best friend and long-time flatmate from Leeds University. Graham’s nine-year-old son Zac Smith was page boy. He loved it and helped Zozi to scatter petals at the church as they came down the aisle. They had seven ushers, including both of their brothers, some cousins from both families and a good friend. There was one female usher, Charlie’s cousin Marn Walker. “It sounds like a lot but there were so many jobs for them to do, from handing out orders of service to directing traffic and they were a massive help,” says Hannah. THE CEREMONY & VENUE St Andrew’s church in Heddon-on-the-Wall is more than 1,300 years old and has a lot of family history. Village priest Rev Audrey McCartan helped plan the service and priest on the day was The Venerable Peter Robinson, the Archdeacon of Lindisfarne. She was walked in to Handel’s Zadok the Priest and hymns were Lord of All Faithfulness, Make me a Channel of Your Peace, The Lord is My Shepherd and Jerusalem. THE RECEPTION The River Terrace at BALTIC gallery on the Quayside, Gateshead. “We had buses to bring guests from the church in Heddon-on-the-Wall to the Baltic, where we started the afternoon with a drinks reception, before the sit-down meal and speeches from my dad, Charlie, and best man Graham. During the day we had live flute and oboe music, including original arrangements of Northumberland folk songs like Bobby Shaftoe. “More guests arrived in the evening and my dad gave another toast, with guests served Pimms and wedding cake. Our evening entertainment was a ceilidh, with music from the Castle Band, then a DJ set til 2am from my friend Daniel Blewitt.” FOOD They gave guests favour bags of fruit, nuts and chocolate to keep them going on the way from the church to the reception. “I didn’t want anyone getting hungry at our wedding!”
19
blue sky thinking THE MENU: starter: smoked Trout with Horseradish-Dressed Potato salad and Rocket or Red onion and sweet Potato soup Main: supreme of Chicken with Fondant Heritage Potatoes, Wild Mushroom and Madeira Jus or Pumpkin, Ricotta and spinach Wellington with Tossed salad pudding: White Chocolate Cheesecake with Chocolate sorbet Followed by coffee and tea in the BALTIC Café “I made a sweetie bar with jars of sweets, nuts and dried fruit for people to nibble at during the day, as I know how peckish people can get at weddings, with all that drinking and dancing. In the evening we had a barbecue with Northumbrian beef burgers, roast chicken and prawn and vegetarian kebabs. “During the evening we also had an artisan ice cream stand from Vallum Farm in Heddon-on-the-Wall, including wedding cake flavour ice cream. We had mini cones, so people could try each of the flavours without getting too full.” CAkE Hannah’s cake was made by her friend Kate Emmett, who owns Cake Poppins. It was a naked cake - dusted with a little bit of icing and decorated with fruit and flowers rather than covered in fondant icing. It had six layers and was a mixture of fruit cake and different flavours of sponge. SPECIAL TOUCHES “My grandmother Margaret Bayman passed away a year and a half ago. We were very close and I wanted to include touches to include her in the day. I made 40m of white bunting to decorate the reception venue and sewed in all sorts of fabric from her old things, including vintage lace. I borrowed her old jars and scales for the sweetie bar. The most important thing to me was carrying her prayer book down the aisle. The book had been a present to her mother, my greatgrandmother, from my great-grandfather on their wedding day and my granny also carried it on the day she married my grandad.”
MEMORABLE MOMENTS “Coming into the church on my dad’s arm and seeing all of our friends and family packed into the pews, smiling at us. “When we came out of the church, lots of Guides and Brownies from my village surprised us with a guard of honour and confetti. I help out at Guides and I’ve known most of the girls for years.”

HONEYMOON They went on a four-night safari in south Africa and then on to Mauritius. “The safari was unforgettable, especially seeing elephants and lions in the wild,” she says.
HANNAH’S TOP TIPS 1. Consider having your dress made. For me it worked out less expensive than many of the dresses I’d looked at in shops and it was so fun to get involved in the design and have something which was a one-off. 2. Keep a master list of guests with their addresses in a Word file. you will use it again and again for your ‘save the dates’, invitations, table plans and thank you cards. 3. Go to bed as early as you can the night before, as you are bound to wake up far too early!
CHARLIE’S TOP TIPS 1. Don’t listen to people who tell you how long your speech should be, you are the one who has to express your love for the woman you have chosen to marry. Therefore however long or short, that’s the correct amount of time. 2. send a present to the bridesmaids on the morning of the wedding. They are your bride’s best friends, so you want to have a good relationship with them. 3. Talk to your mother-in-law to be. she is concerned about her daughter’s future, so if you can get on with her you’ll make a very good friend.

ou may not have Mrs Middleton’s budget but you needn’t fear the fashion spotlight shining on you. Just heed a few rules. • Don’t become someone new! You’re mum. There’s no requirement to lose three stone, get Botox and go blonde – unless you want to. stick to your own style, not what you think is expected of you by others. • But don’t be afraid to ask for help – if you do worry about making an outfit choice try a session with a personal shopper somewhere like Fenwick in Newcastle where there are comfy surroundings and all the time in the word – and encouragement - to try on things you’d normally walk past! • Think fit - if you are larger on the top compared to the bottom half or vice versa, go for separates. Tunic style flatters most body shapes • Buy the right size – you probably won’t lose weight for the big day • The look you’re after should be elegant and confident not sexy or too ‘look at me!”
24
• Don’t go: too short, too tight, too casual – unless it’s a super laid-back affair • Hats – you don’t have to if you don’t want to – but do have some detail, a fascinator or pretty hair slide • Think undies - choose the correct and right size underwear for the outfit and they will take pounds off! • Dress for the venue and theme of the wedding – a fancy hotel or restaurant requires a tailored, dressy look. Choose a pastel, or if you have a strong personality go for a bold colour pop. • A safe option is neutral but accessorise with strong colours for your shoes and bag • Remember, at weddings a large chunk of time is spent standing around outside waiting for the photos, so make sure you have a pashmina or wrap with you. If grass is involved, avoid that sinking feeling that high heels will guarantee. • A wedding is not the time to try a new hairstyle, new make-up style or a completely new dress style. Comfort equals confidence.

WE’RE LOVED UP
REAL-LIFE wedding Lynsey & Paul Dixon from gosforth were MARRIED AT Matfen Hall All weddings are special, none more so than the wedding of Lynsey and Paul Dixon. The couple have Down’s Syndrome and were determined they wanted to get married. They have achieved many of their dreams and family and friends celebrated with them at their amazing wedding at Matfen Hall. First Met: They started going out at college. They have been engaged since 2008 and have lived together in their own flat for four years. The Proposal: Paul made a romantic meal for Lynsey and gave her a bouquet of red roses as he proposed. Her engagement ring is heart-shaped and hearts are very important to them and played a big part in their wedding. The Dress: The beautiful ivory dress with straps had a lace design of flowers, lots of bling and sparkle. It was bought from YAP in Newcastle. He Wore: Grey suit with embroidered silver grey waistcoat with teal tie. Bridesmaids: Three bridesmaids wore chiffon teal dresses and heart pendant necklaces, gifts from the bride.
28
Ceremony and Reception: The ceremony took place in The Great Hall at Matfen. The chairs were decorated with teal-coloured sashes and heart-shaped pins. The grand fireplaces and tables were decorated with cream roses and carnations. The beautiful staircase made a grand entrance for a beautiful bride. The ceremony was very special with a candle ceremony. Both mums lit tall candles, Lynsey and Paul together joined the flames to one pillar candle to symbolise joining of two families. After their vows both Lynsey and Paul said their own words to each other. Lynsey’s cousin’s young sons were ring bearers, carrying the rings on cushions embroidered with the word ‘Love’. There was not a dry eye in the hall. At the reception at Matfen Lynsey’s dad sang and played the guitar. Paul’s speech was heartfelt and when the best man stopped crying his speech was funny and emotional! Photographer: David E Williams Special Touches: Hearts on cake, chairs, and packs of hankies tied with teal ribbon and heart, ‘Tears of Joy’ messages to each other engraved on the inside of each wedding ring. Bride and Groom wedding gifts: Paul gave Lynsey a Pandora bracelet with a single heart encrusted with diamantes to match her engagement ring. Lynsey gave Paul a silver and leather wrist strap. Honeymoon: Paris and Disneyland.

Our celebrity wedding stylist and photographer Shirlie Kemp brings you some inspirational floral looks I’ve been working alongside students at Zita Elze’s Flower Academy in Kew where I was able to photograph some of their designs. The theatre of flowers is at the heart of the projects and the theme for this student was Mother Pearl. You need some imagination and plenty of energy – she scoured vintage markets to look for pearl buttons and old cotton reels – just think of the riches you might find in an elderly relative’s sewing box!
A wacky but fun idea was to hang vintage forks from an old lampshade that had been stripped down to its bare wire frame. It was a pared down and quite natural look the base colours were creams and taupes which combined beautifully with linen and fresh cotton fabrics. A really fresh look that is romantic, frothy and laid-back. The flower academy is a great place for anyone looking to learn bespoke wedding floristry and styling! www.zitaelze.com/weddings

suggested looking at Hotel Du Vin in Newcastle for both the ceremony and reception and the couple was so pleased with the recommendation. It had everything they wanted from a venue and exclusivity on the day made it all the more special. PHOTOgRAPHER: The Twins. HAIR AND MAkEUP: sarah Walsh did all the hair and makeup on the day. SPECIAL TOUCHES: They chose a simple vintage theme as modern table dressing did not work well with the venue. Joanne hired vintage china from The Vintage Tea Lady which looked amazing. she had lavender drawer favours made for the ladies and for the men they had miniature bottles of Jack Daniels. Glen Roughead and Paul Lytton (magician) provided the entertainment during the day. For the evening they had snaparazzi photo booth and a disco. BRIDE AND gROOM WEDDINg gIFTS: Ross bought Joanne Cristal champagne to drink with her bridesmaids along with personalised champagne glasses. she bought him Green Lantern cufflinks as he is his favourite superhero! HONEYMOON: Ten relaxing days in Zanzibar without the kids in a private villa on the beach. It was a surprise organised by Ross but his friend accidently let the cat out of the bag!

ven the beaches of their home in New Zealand couldn’t compete with the seashore of south Tyneside for bride Rebecca Maxim who returned to her childhood home in south Bents for her wedding. she and Mike, who have just had a baby girl, returned from New Zealand for a ceremony in church at Whitburn which was followed by a marquee reception in her parents’ garden.

Photographer Helen Russell takes up the story: “They had their evening party at Marsden Grotto – which is a fabulous spot for photographs – I love the light – especially at about 7pm in the evening, the light can be dramatic and beautiful – by then everyone’s feeling relaxed and they’re happy to play on the sand. “I love that juxtaposition of formalwear on the beach, it works so well and is memorable for the couple.”

tynemouth he beautiful backdrop of the mouth of the Tyne and its pier at Tynemouth were the setting for a post-shoot for bride and groom sarah Garrod, a PE teacher and Pete, a sports development officer, from Hawthorn, County Durham. Their wedding day was a windswept and stormy one at their local church in their home village in December. The weather was about as bad as it gets with torrential rain and gales so outdoor photography was almost impossible. They got together with their photographer steve Brough three months later to add some scenic coastal

mma and Paul Doran from Dunston were blessed with a perfect summer day when they were married at Newton Hall on the Northumberland coast. you can almost feel the hazy heat of the day in the photographs by Helen Russell. Their seashore photographs were relaxed and natural – part of a relaxed day which also included a barbecue in the evening. Emma, a sales negotiator, and Paul, a sales executive, were together 14 years when Paul proposed at a music festival in spain – a week later in Ibiza they found out they were expecting baby Ruby! They started looking at wedding dates and venues when she was a few months old. “The beach was a bonus - we had perfect weather on the day so Helen got some amazing photographs. We didn’t want anywhere too formal, just to get married, have a good party and for everyone to have a fun day. “special touches on the day included a three-tier pork pie cake decorated with cherry tomatoes/parsley and a bride & groom on the top - Paul is a big pie fan! “Ruby went down the aisle first with my mum and her aunt holding a ‘Daddy, here comes Mummy’ wooden heart which was sweet.”

indsey Clay and architect husband Martin live in Newcastle and the beach at Bamburgh is a regular haunt. They chose to have their wedding at Middleton Hall in Belford because of its proximity to Bamburgh beach. Lindsey, a psychotherapist, explains: “It was a beautiful sunny day so it couldn’t have been better for us. We headed for the beach after the ceremony and had pictures on the dunes and the sand. “Because it was so sunny the beach was really busy so it was a case of trying to dodge the dog-walkers and crowds! It was nice in the middle of all the excitement of the day to get away on our own, just for an hour. “My dress was silk and quite lightweight so it managed the dunes pretty well – we got back to the reception just in time to sit down to our food!”

aving always lived close to the beach at Tynemouth, Katie Brooks, a sales manager, always knew she wanted her favourite beach to feature in her wedding day. After a church wedding and a reception at The Grand Hotel in Tynemouth, she and Andy, a buyer, scurried off to the Longsands beach for some frolics on the sand on the brightest of days – but not the warmest – it was February! “I was perished,” admits Katie. “but it was great fun – people on the beach were so lovely, wishing us well and congratulating us. Our photographer was trying to get my veil to blow in the wind – it did – and it flew off on to the rocks – so I had to send Andy clambering over the rocks in his wedding suit to get it! “We were delighted with the pictures.”

J
ayne Chaytor teaches in a specialist college for people with autism and Gary works in retail. They live in Gateshead. They were married at Newton Hall and wanted a relaxed, informal wedding with quirky vintage touches so when they visited Newton Hall they knew it was perfect – although at the time renovations weren’t complete. Being by the sea was perfect. Says Jayne: “I remember before the wedding people telling us that it was going to be the best day of our lives and it really was (so far!). It was absolutely perfect, even the sun was shining!
“Our photographer, Helen, asked if we’d like to have some shots taken on the beach so we sneaked down for half an hour after the wedding meal. It was beautiful, we were the only people on the beach and the coastline is stunning. Helen was really good at capturing the essence of the day and knew exactly what we wanted to achieve.” As a special touch they asked every married guest for a photo from their own wedding and Jayne made some vintage frames to display them. She also made a candy bar and Newton Hall had their own vintage popcorn machine!

As his bride Emma, a social worker, her family and friends talked table plans and flowers, teacher John had a plan up his sleeve that was going to wow the wedding reception. With a gang of his mates he created a video to the soundtrack of the 60s song Baby I’m yours – better known for the Arctic Monkeys version. It’s become a Faceboook favourite among his friends – featuring his and Emma’s local haunts and favourite places with friends and family popping up in unusual places – including wheelie bins – having been given their own lines to sing. John explains: “The idea was to have something that would last longer than the wedding day itself. I wanted

to create something for Emma, that included her close friends and family that she could watch over and over to remember how much she means to everyone. The lyrics to this song are perfect which is why I chose it - I intend to ‘be hers until the end of time’. We are both huge music lovers and music plays a large part in our lives and played a large part in our wedding. our wedding favours were a compilation CD that we produced, of songs that mean a lot to us both.” The wedding video took a while to produce – John sent out instructions to everyone who was going to be involved, letting them know which line of the song they would be performing. From then until it was shown at the wedding took six months. Locations were carefully chosen - Emma’s childhood home, the church where they married, yarm high street where they met and the appropriately named “True Lovers Walk” by the river. “The most difficult scenes were the ones with animals

The wheelie bin shot was very funny as it was the windiest day of the year - and we had to get two of our friends inside the bins! “There were about 36 people in it – there weren’t enough lines in the song unfortunately! My ushers Andy Pickover and Michael shepherd helped me make a story board and produce the end video. “After the speeches, the best man told the guests of an extra surprise for the bride which would be shown in the lounge (we had set it up the day before the wedding without Emma knowing). Emma was speechless. she laughed at certain parts, screamed, and cried so it was definitely worth the blood, sweat and tears that were put into the making of it. “I would recommend it to other grooms but only if it’s something personal to them - it’s a lovely idea to have something to watch after the wedding day, just as you would look at the photographs from the day.” John is a musician with a degree in music. His bands have toured with the likes of Pete Doherty and Babyshambles, Pigeon Detectives, The Datsuns shared a stage with Jake Bugg at the stockton Weekender. BE ON ALERT to fetch, carry and say yes to pretty much any demand from the females organising things! CHOOSE A BEST MAN who will make your big day memorable and mature – not the one who’d make it worthy of an episode of The Inbetweeners. sign up Mr sensible for the important stuff. REMEMBER it’s about the vows and the forever as much as it is the rendition of Wonderwall. SHE WILL REALLY LOVE YOU IF you show signs of having had a haircut, shave, beard-trim or just ditched the Converse for the big day. IN YOUR SPEECH you’ve got the opportunity to make lifetime friends - say how gorgeous your bride is (a few times)… and her mum and her bridesmaids – and remember your mum too! A WELL-THOUgHT gIFT FOR YOUR BRIDE-TO-BE as she gets ready will get you so many Brownie points – this when it’s the thought that counts - a daft card that means something to you both, a cute gift – just something to make her think of you as she gets ready.
How about a groom-centric chill-out zone at the wedding? A MICRO-BREWERY with local beers and craft ales – fill aluminum tubs with ice and bottles of beer. WHISkY AND DARTS Create a gentlemen’s lounge stocked with a dart board and a bottle of scotch. TEQUILA BAR: We’re not suggesting an all-nighter but find a space for some tequila bottles along with shot glasses and wedges of lime. CIgAR SHACk: How about a celebratory cigar station at the reception? Create a dedicated smoking area for the special day.

WE’re LOVED UP
REAL-LIFE wedding Hannah SCARTH and Paul WALKER from WALLSEND were married at Slaley Hall, Northumberland First Met: They met on Halloween. Paul came into the pub where Hannah worked. She was dressed as a cat. Paul was really shy (which after getting to know him isn’t him at all) and he took a week to ask her out on a date. They went out for a romantic meal and drinks, then sat ‘people watching’ at the bar making up stories about the other revellers and making each other laugh. The Proposal: Paul always knew Hannah wanted to go to New York from being a child. On Christmas Day 2012 she opened her last present to find two tickets to Lion King on Broadway and two tickets to fly to New York on January 2nd. On their first morning they decided to visit Central Park where Paul got down on one knee and proposed next to a frozen lake in front of The Plaza. Of course the answer was YES!
60
The Dress: Satin ivory Stella York modern princess dress. A delicate lace bodice with a ruched band at the waist. There was a line of diamante added all the way down the back of the dress and train. A bustle button was added so she could tie the dress up later in the evening. He Wore: Traditional morning suit - black tails with ivory waistcoat and grey pinstripe pants with ivory cravat. The fathers and ushers had the same but replaced with a red cravat to match the bridesmaid. Bridesmaids: Hannah’s sister Robyn was maid of honour and the only bridesmaid, wearing a red Alfred Angelo floor-length chiffon dress with an ivory waist band. Flower girl Gracie wore an ivory knee-length tea dress with a red bow and red band at the bottom of the dress.
WE’re LOVED UP Ceremony and Reception: Both the ceremony and reception were held at Slaley Hall, Hexham on what felt like the hottest day of the year! They knew this was where they wanted to get married as they play golf there and had been for a romantic weekend not long after they started dating. Photographer: Nigel and Christina Davison of 2tone Photography. Special Touches: All the groomsmen had matching cufflinks with their role on them. We had a string quartet called North East Soiree for the ceremony and whilst pictures were being taken. Both Hannah and Robyn had matching bracelets and Gracie got a personalised teddy bear to keep as a reminder. Every guest had his or her own individual personalised menu and some of the six-tier wedding cake from Julies Cake House. Bride and Groom wedding gifts: Paul bought Hannah a Tiffany necklace, a large bunch of white roses and bottle of Viktor and Rolf Bon Bon perfume. Hannah bought Paul a rose gold and black leather Diesel watch and a bottle of Viktor and Rolf Spicebomb aftershave. Honeymoon: Two weeks In Riviera Maya, Mexico on the Caribbean coast in a couples-only resort. They went swimming with dolphins and turtles and explored some of the amazing sights and natural wonders in Mexico.

vEnUE Wray’s Barn, Whinstone View, Great Ayton is a vaulted country-style wedding barn in the hillside grounds of a bistro and luxury lodge complex. It’s close to the famous Roseberry Topping landmark in Great Ayton, North yorkshire. The newly-built crafted wooden barn is surrounded by a wooden verandah which overlooks parkland with a huge weeping willow and wandering peacocks. The barn can be hired for civil ceremonies as well as receptions – the room is warm and welcoming thanks to reclaimed brick walls and arm timbers – highlighted with swathes of sparkly lights – making it perfect for either summer or winter weddings. When it’s hot guests can spill on to the terrace and gardens and laze about on haybales when it gets chilly, it’s a fine place to cosy up – especially with the flame-heaters that can be hired for outdoors. Wedding packages feature a variety of options, whether a rustic affair with coq au vin on the menu or a vintage treat with lashings of Pimms, cakes and delicate pastries. WE’re LOVED UP
REAL-LIFE wedding Amy Hopkinson and Sam Brice from gosforth were childhood sweethearts First Met: We first met at the age of 14 through mutual school friends, but started going out on a group holiday in Majorca when we were 16 and 17. The week of the wedding was our ten-year anniversary! The Proposal: Sam proposed halfway through cooking me a candlelit meal for my birthday at home, and surprised me by getting down on one knee before we even had the main course! We were then far too excited to eat anything even though he had been preparing all day! He proposed with a bracelet charm as he knew I’d want to choose my own ring, and then surprised me with a bottle of our favourite champagne. The Dress: I bought my dress online from Phase Eight bridal (Pandora style) and as soon as I saw it two years before the wedding I knew it was the one. I made up for having a high street dress with a pair of sparkly Jimmy Choos which my grandad bought me. He Wore: Sam and all the groomsmen wore suits from M&S as we wanted a modern style. They were teamed with simple white shirts and bright yellow ties, and Sam wore a pretty cool pair of Paul Smith brogues - we are definitely shoe people! Ceremony and Reception: The whole day was held at the BALTIC, which we fell in love with straight away. The ceremony was held in the river terrace with
72
fabulous balcony overlooking the bridges, and then we went up to Six restaurant for the wedding breakfast. The evening reception was back in the river terrace. Photographer: Photography was one of the first things that was chosen - I know photographer Nicky Rogerson and I felt calm knowing Nicky would put me at ease as we wanted all the memories of the day to be very relaxed. We got some fab shots with the bridges and some really quirky group shots that we love! Special Touches: Most of our special touches were handmade - including nearly 100 paper pom poms hung from the ceiling of the ceremony room. My parents’ house was a nerve centre in the weeks leading up to the big day! We also called in a few favours - good friends in Edinburgh designed all our wedding stationery (thompaynedesign). We made up goody bags with Jagerbombs as favours which went down a treat. Light-up letters from Coco Luminaire got loads of compliments and added the wow factor. Bride and Groom wedding gifts: We both made up goody bags for each other and were surprised when we found out we had both bought each other a pair of Ray-bans for honeymoon! Sam also bought me the matching wedding ring charm for my bracelet. Honeymoon: We had a fabulous mini moon in a luxury eco barn in Cornwall the week after the wedding which was just so relaxing, and we were lucky enough to have a heatwave! We are busy planning our honeymoon to Laos, Cambodia and Malaysia for early next year - it is nice to still have something to do after two years of planning a wedding.

Julia Braime, wedding blogger and editor of www.bridesupnorth.co.uk forecasts next season’s bridal trends
a DrEss TO iMPrEss predict a bright and beautiful year for brides-to-be in 2015. I’m not Loved Up Magazine’s new astrologer but crystal ball or not - I am an award-winning wedding blog editor with access to all the info on the hottest trends in bridal design: the wedding gowns about to land in a bridal boutique near you. Here’s my run-down of the forecast for 2015. Ladies, prepare to get starry-eyed…
I
PAINT JOB Art lovers will adore the hand painted bodices on show from UK bridal houses like Alan Hannah this season. Painstakingly daubed blooms and trailing blossoms enliven and brighten the softest silks for a truly bespoke and individual finish. Try: Alan Hannah
IT’S LOOkINg ROSY The roses won’t just be in your cheeks on your wedding day if the top designers have anything to do with it. The beautiful trend for blushing brides just refuses to pale, so expect to be in the pink with soft shades of nude, pearl, violet and silver dominating the catwalks. This season it’s all about layers and texture, so watch out for blousy organzas and flouncy chiffons shimmering with ombre effects. Try: Naomi Neoh, Terry Fox
Peta by Charlotte Balbier
gO WITH THE FLOW In a complete contrast to the heavy embellishment that continues to dominate bridal styling, brides who are looking for fuss-free elegance will love the soft structuring and modern simplicity of offerings from some of the UK’s newest and hottest designers. Watch out for glistening silks, ethereal iridescents and fluid lines. Try: Emma Hunt, Ivory & Co
FLOWER POWER Flirty and fun, my favourite labels went for a full dose of flower power this season, keeping their lines beautifully feminine and fabulously (florally) on trend. Get ready to bloom! Try: Charlotte Balbier, Ian Stuart Bride
Brides Up North is one of the top bridal blogs in the UK and the only wedding blog especially for brides in the North. Visit www.bridesupnorth.co.uk for a double daily dose of real weddings, bridal fashion features, local supplier showcases, giveaways, discounts and more!

in the know Cheeky Cuts Daringly low backs, cutaway detailing and sweeping necklines echo the mainstream trend for flashing some flesh. But this is bridal girls, and leading labels keep it tasteful and tasty, with balanced silhouettes that add drama but respect your modesty. Try: Yolan Cris
Dulcidine by Ian Stuart Bride
Yolan Cris
Ruffle It Up From large cascading layers to small, neatly formed rows of pleated fabrics, the bridal catwalks were awash with ruffles and waves this season. Simple or standout, designs with ruffles demand attention and tick boxes for prettiness, femininity and, of course, romance. Try: Ian Stuart Bride, Linea Raffaelli

ask THE EXPErTs hErE wE Go - tiME to soothE thE NErVEs..... We’re going to an all-day wedding and I worry I will be on my knees by the evening – any survival tips? kATHRYN: you know how they say don’t drink alcohol on a plane – and we all do? Weddings are like that aren’t they? The temptation to peak too early is all too easy. some thoughts: Have a decent breakfast – there will be lots of hanging around. Pack a nibble in your handbag – cereal bar, bag of Twiglets, an apple… whatever you like – in case of emergency! There’s always a big stretch of hanging about time after the ceremony and during photos – good brides should provide snacks to cope with this. Drink water between glasses of champagne, especially if it’s hot. If you’re starting to flag then just head off for some ‘time-out’, no-one will notice. Take an emergency kit with wipes, deodorant, a facial spritz, as well as your make-up kit for evening revival. And kick off the heels and invest in a pair of handbagfriendly pumps in a little pouch to keep the blisters at bay – find them by Cocorose from House of Fraser. I like the idea of wild flowers at my wedding but I don’t have a massive budget kATHRYN: Find a friend with a farm – or a huge garden. Masses of green hedgerow foliage creates a great impact – you just have to be prepared to
80
head out with you scissors. It will depend on the time of year of course but something like ivy is an allrounder and looks fabulous – it grows like mad so someone you know will have an abundance of it in their garden! Place it in old zinc buckets or distressed garden planters. Mismatched old pewter tankards look lovely with justpicked wildflowers in them – you can buy in country blooms then add to them with picked foliage – even from evergreen trees in winter. I’d love the glamorous vintage Hollywood look for my wedding – what are the key ways to create it? VICTORIA: This look was key to the make-up we used in our Hollywood shoot (page 6). Don’t be afraid of a bold look for a bride. It’s about personality. The combination of a defining eyeliner flick paired with a stunning red lip is a classic look but the key is precision, precision, precision! It works best when keeping eyeshadows to a minimum and while a little contouring is great, overall the look should be clean and precise. Make-up always looks wonderful on a beautiful canvas - a great skincare routine is essential in the runup to the wedding with facials part of the regime.
the details I’d recommend you: • Use a primer to create a flawless long-lasting base for make-up. • Liquid liner can be a daunting prospect - use a gel and build up slowly to perfect your look. • Always work with eyes open and looking straight ahead - (this does take practice) • Black is always a great choice but choosing another shade can add a contemporary edge (blues, greens, greys and purples are all excellent alternatives). • Red lipsticks have undertones of either orange or blue which is helpful to know when choosing your shade. • To keep your lipstick looking fresher for longer use a lip liner as a base before applying your lipstick on top. • A good place to find inspiration is from celebs on the red carpet.
I don’t really want a ‘top table’ – any suggestions for an alternative? VALERIE MCEWAN: Depending on your party size, one large rectangular or square table works well, then everyone can see and speak with one another. If your party size is larger there are many different options to choose from, one being to have an extra two places set on each or most of the tables and have the bride and groom move around for each course. sitting the top table guests on a table the same as the rest of the wedding party helps the bride and groom feel less on show if they want.
In terms of hair - creating a good strong set is key to Hollywood curls with staying power as they need to be able to withstand a good brushing out. Veronica Lake waves or beautiful Audrey Hepburn up do’s are all created with a good strong foundation roller set so time, patience, product and hot tools are the ingredients which will determine the success of your set. It’s tricky to do this yourself so on wedding days get yourself a good hair stylist. The main thing is to decide on your style and from that work out which direction your curls need to go in. Use hot rollers and product to set your hair. Do not remove set until your hair is completely cool and don’t be afraid to brush those curls right out. That’s when you will see waves begin to emerge and from here you should be able to mould the waves into your desired style.
What are the biggest trends in weddings at the moment? DAWN MARIE: In the last 19 years I have seen many ‘wedding trends’ from bold, classic colours to pastels, years of ‘purple and silver’ weddings, back to classic, onto vintage etc. This year and into 2015 is the ‘country garden’ theme. Beautiful, soft floral arrangements with hydrangeas, peony roses, sweet peas and gypsophilia, hand tied in natural arrangements for bouquets and an almost ‘thrown together’ look for dining tables. Match these soft garden colours for your bridesmaids, stationery, chair sashes and accessories. Chalkboards and quirky signs match this theme perfectly as do giant garden games.
What’s the best way to keep children occupied during the reception? VALERIE MCEWAN: In my experience activity packs go down really well, nothing big or elaborate but a small colouring book, pack of pencils and maybe some bubbles go a long way to keeping the little ones occupied although you can get carried away with all the choices! For the slightly older children a little wedding-based treasure hunt would be a hit.
I like the idea of an ‘afternoon tea’ instead of a full reception but how can I make it more of an ‘event? VALERIE MCEWAN: There are so many ideas from having a theme (Mad Hatter’s tea party anyone?) to hiring out props like vintage tea sets, bunting etc and with so many great local companies the sky is the limit! www.classiclodges.co.uk
Can you suggest some ideas to keep people occupied in the lull between the reception and evening ‘do’ DAWN MARIE: one of the things I stress most to my brides is creating a day which flows seamlessly. There should never be a time when your guests are wondering what to do. occasionally, due to the availability of registrars or restrictions by your venue, you find yourself with a gap between the day reception and your evening event. This is when a good wedding planner can come to the rescue. Magicians, photo entertainment - booth or a photo wall. balloon sculptor, ice-cream van, casino, garden games can all fill the gap as can cocktail mixing, musicians, singing waiters, caricaturists, fairground rides, even giant dodgems.
