Beaded beauty Sleek and chic. how the deco trend gets a twist for the modern bride and groom ovies like the forthcoming Gatsby and the huge success of TV series’ Downton Abbey and Mr Selfridge have thrown the Edwardian and Art Deco eras into sharp fashion focus. The look is lean and elegant with minimal fuss and chic detail. The Black Swan Hotel in Helmsley, North Yorkshire was the setting for this vintage-style wedding shoot. To channel this look through your accessories, try long strands of pearl necklaces or gold toned jewellery. Scoop! The tap, tap of a typewriter, a hack on the hunt for a story of true love... and a hot off the press retro report to mark your big day riter Margaret Burt becomes your personal newspaper journalist observing your day with notebook in hand to come up with a unique and cool record of a headline day. Newcastle-based Margaret is a published novelist with Hodder and Stoughton and has just launched a business as the Wedding Writer. “I turn up at weddings, inhale the atmosphere, chat to chosen guests and report back affectionately on the details of The Day. “Think of me as an enthusiastic wedding guest, making sure every loving comment is kept safe. “ She comes dressed for the part as a news reporter from the 1940s, bearing VIP badges and gifts for interviewees, with a vintage microphone and airport arrival-style name cards for interviewees. “Perhaps I’ll report on the way the groom’s voice broke at the altar, the bridesmaid who dropped her posy, the black Labrador who turned up in his tux the incidents and accidents, with colour and with quotes”, she explains. The wedding couple selects four guests to be interviewed – they might be the uncle who travelled furthest or the friend who was there when they met. She later gives the couple a booklet all about their day. Margaret is a storyteller, “Memories matter. Hiring me as Wedding Press helps to create and share fabulous memories. With my vintage press outfit and airport arrival-style cards, I can add atmosphere and drama to the wedding day by gathering comments, wishes, memories and quotes from guests.” She also writes Wedding Books, telling the full story of the couple’s journey, from hellos to honeymoon.

MAGICAL CHARM

SMILE LIKE A STAR oon Booth is a quirky twist on the original paper moon photographs of the early 20th century and captures their charm at weddings as great mementoes of an occasion for the bridal couple and their guests. Set up by North East couple, Kit Haigh and Amanda Drago the Moon Booth perfectly captures the magical charm of the era at a time when photography and posing for the camera was a thrilling, exciting experience. The 1920s photo booth is unlike an automated photo booth in that it is more of a portable photographic studio, and is ideal for events where the guests are glammed up and ready to pose! Photographs are taken by the couple’s alter-egos; charming Miss Amber Le Fay and the dashing Mr Bentley G. Ravelle, proprietors of the Moon Booth. Sitters are put at ease, posed to look their best and then, within moments, presented with a lasting take away print to commemorate.

WE’re LOVED UP

REAL LIFE wedding Jenny AND David Southerland were marrIed at close house First Met: On our first day at university in Leeds. We were in the student bar at Kirkstall Brewery Halls of residence with a large group of people. Everyone was new and getting to know each other over a few drinks. We got on well straight from the start and didn’t stop talking! The Proposal: After ten years together David planned a weekend away to Derbyshire. The first day they went to Chatsworth house (a setting of Jenny’s all-time favourite, Pride and Prejudice). After a wander around the beautiful gardens they went up to the Cascade House and as they looked out to the view David was on one knee asking Jenny to marry him! He then took her for champagne afternoon tea. The Dress: The first shop she went to was Rosina Brown’s in Stocksfield. ‘The’ dress was the second dress she tried on. The dress was designed by Rosina herself and she was fantastic at helping Jenny find the perfect accessories too. Her brother bought her a pair of Jimmy Choos as a special present which completed the look! He Wore: Black suit from Greenwoods with an ivory waistcoat to match the dress. His accessories were deep purple which matched the bridesmaid’s dresses. Bridesmaids: Straight away Jenny knew that she wanted sister Emily and David’s sister Samantha to be by her side on the special day. They wore beautiful full length dresses by Forever Yours in deep purple with diamante detail. She also had two flower girls (Chloe Metcalf and Alice Cubbage)

30

who wore pale pink fairy dresses by Couche Tot. Ceremony and Reception: Jenny knew straight away where she wanted to get married but still took time to look at different venues, only to go back to where her heart was set on. She is a teacher at a first school in Heddon-On-TheWall and asked if she could be married at that church. When the vicar agreed to marry the couple they were delighted as she feeIs a part of the community. Lots of children and family from school joined them in the church and straight away it helped them feel relaxed. They then went to Close House for the reception which was magical in every way. They were joined by friends and family from near and far and it was the perfect day from start to finish, says Jenny. The setting was beautiful and the staff at Close House perfect. Photographer: We had the fantastic Nicky Rogerson as our photographer and she was brilliant. She was so calm and helpful which made sure everything ran smoothly. We were so delighted to see the photographs as they are all so natural and captured special moments from the day. Our album is exquisite and something to cherish forever. Special Touches: The steel pan band played during the drinks reception at Close House. They were called the Sunshine Panners and created a brilliant atmosphere. “Every part of my wedding was a special touch. We are so incredibly lucky to have had our fairytale dream wedding”, says Jenny. Honey moon: Mauritus and Dubai!

REAL LIFE wedding Catherine Barnes and Andrew Mernin were married at Our Lady and St Oswins in Tynemouth before their reception in Jesmond First met: At a wedding! Catherine was one of Andrew’s sister’s bridesmaids and he was an usher. One thing led to another and he got her phone number. She had planned to go backpacking round the world for a year shortly after, but cut the trip short and they started going out. For their first date he took her to a pub in Gosforth. The proposal: Andrew proposed during a trip to the Lake District. They were out in a rowing boat on Windermere and he even managed to hide champagne in his rucksack. The dress: Catherine wore a Jenny Packham wedding dress from a shop in Edinburgh. Bridesmaids: Her bridesmaids were sister Jenny and Andrew’s sister Sarah, her oldest friend from school. Catherine’s dress had quite a vintage feel to it, so they wore silvery/grey dresses in a similar style from Monsoon.

He wore: Andrew and the ushers wore French navy morning suits from Chris Hayward Mens Formal Hire in Heaton. Their two-year-old nephew Joshua, who was also an usher, wore a very cute grey jacket with a waistcoat and blue tie. Ceremony and reception: Ceremony at local parish church, Our Lady and St Oswin’s in Tynemouth, and a reception at Jesmond Dene House. Photographer: Phil Smith who did a brilliant job of capturing our feelings and the mood of the day and they were impressed with his informal but really creative style. At the evening reception Phil brought along his pop-up studio and fancy dress box which everyone loved - kids and adults alike. (www.philsmithphotography.co.uk and, for the pop-up studio, www.popupstudio.co.uk). Special touches: It was a winter wedding so the candles, open fireplace and grandeur of the old hall at our venue really added to the atmosphere. Their parents helped to add lots of personal touches, including using the same cake-top ornament that was used on Catherine’s great-grandmother’s wedding cake. Honeymoon: Catherine is a teacher so they are waiting for the Easter holidays when they fly off to Mauritius. They had a few nights in the Blythswood Spa Hotel in Scotland after the wedding.

You might be bride or bridesmaid but whatever your role, hair is big player. If it’s in poor condition then styling and staying power will be that bit tougher. Hair extensions could the answer, especially if you’ve always yearned for long, luscious, full-bodied locks. Years of colouring and use of heat styling products can take their toll. The team at Foxy Hair Extensions in Newcastle is a bride’s best friend. Owner Hayley Fox is an expert. One bridesmaid-to-be told us her experience.: “I chose Virgin Brazilian Hair and was told the best application for my requirements would be the Micro-ring Weft. The Brazilian Hair is completely natural, has never been through any chemical processing and the colour or texture hasn’t been altered. “I was introduced to Ashleigh, and told that both she and Hayley would be fitting my extensions. I knew I was in good hands with two members of staff applying the pieces. “They began working on my hair, showing me how the extensions are applied and talking me through how to look after my new extensions, telling me that I shouldn’t wash my hair for two to three days to make sure that the bonds can fully form, and that I should sleep with it loosely tied up, to make sure that my hair stays soft and tangle free. “The girls then cut in my new extensions, making them look perfectly natural and blending them in with my own hair. They demonstrated how to tie it up without exposing the bonds and showed me the perfect way to style it for the wedding.” Find out more at www.getfoxy.co.uk. It’s best to try out a few different looks to ensure that you are happy and confident on the big day. ■ Take photos: Use a camera not your phone! Try with the flash and without and in different lighting situations as this will give you an idea of how your make-up will look on your wedding photos as well as in person. ■ Be yourself: There’s nothing worse than getting your make-up done and feeling like someone else is looking back at you when looking in the mirror. Communication is key. Talk to your make-up artist about what you usually do when it comes to your own make-up, what features you would love to enhance feel free to ask questions.

Don’ts ■ Be afraid to speak up: Tell your make-up artist if you are unsure about something. This way they can try a different look, application technique or product. Keep a mirror close to hand the whole time. This not only allows you to see what’s going on but is also a great way to pick up tips. ■ Forget your lippy! The only thing that you should need to touch up during the day, is your lip colour or gloss. Find out what your make-up artist used in your trial and purchase either that shade or a similar one. ■ Forget to stop and savour every second. My Personal Favourites For Dryer skin tyPes are: laura mercier hydrating primer, maC prep and prime and estee lauder’s illuminating primer. For an oily skin: There are creams and sprays to help control oiliness. i opt for Urban Decay’s De Slick before and after makeup application for extra staying power. laura mercier do a great oil-free primer, as do Bare minerals and estee lauder do a fabulous mattifying one. i also rate Shu Uemura’s UV mousse. try anD steer clear oF high sPFs on your weDDing Day: This is because they don’t tend to photograph well and often make the skin appear paler than it should. anything with an SPF 15 or lower works well. i often use foundations with an SPF15 and they work great photographically. keeP it classic: Have you ever looked at a photograph of yourself from years ago and thought “What on earth was i thinking?” This is obviously not what you want to happen when looking back at your wedding album. my advice is to keep it as classic as possible but most importantly be yourself. PowDer: Be sure to set your makeup. Try staying with powders that are lightweight and natural. Be careful not to over powder, you don’t want your makeup looking cakey. my favourites are Shu Uemura and laura mercier translucent powders as they are milled very finely. maC’s mineralise skin finish are lovely with a feather light finish which doesn’t completely mask your work. Use loose powders by dipping half your powder puff in the product, folding your puff in half and work the product into it. Give the puff a tap on the back of your hand to remove excess, then press and roll on to skin to set makeup. Brush off any excess with a powder brush. if you like the ‘dewy’ look, then powder the T.zone and miss out the cheeks in order to achieve a glowing finish to your base. waterProoF Mascara: it’s your big day, emotions may be running high but that doesn’t mean that your mascara needs to run as well! REAL LIFE wedding After a 23-year engagement, Lesley and Paul Lister were married at Holy Trinity Church, Seghill, Northumberland with a glittering celebration in a marquee in the garden afterwards First Met: Lesley was first introduced to Paul at a boxing event - he was topping the bill. Sometime later on a night out in Newcastle they met again when Paul was working in one of the bars. Lesley kept dragging her friends into the same bar every week just for a look, but could not find the confidence to chat, until eventually one of her best friends grew exhausted of the same routine every Friday night and forced them together! The Proposal: Following a 23-year engagement, four children and one grand-daughter, Paul proposed over the frozen peas in Sainsbury’s! Lesley didn’t believe him until he broke the news to their friends over a meal that same evening. The guests: With almost 300 acceptances they decided a marquee in their garden was the best option. There were a lot of children attending the wedding so it was important to keep them entertained. They hired a bouncy castle, tubs of toys sourced from every pound shop Lesley could find, a face painter and their own home-made sweet shop. (It was handy living next door to a clever joiner) They wanted all the guests to feel that they were a big

50

part of the day, so event organiser, Dandy, supplied balloons for all the ladies and they did a balloon release. As dusk fell they also hosted a firework display which was a great end to the celebrations. The Planning: Denise at Dandy Events helped Lesley enjoy the whole thing - having a professional company on board gave her some stress relief! Months before, Lesley spent a great deal of time going around wedding fairs and researching magazines, websites for inspiration and this was really helpful too. The Ceremony: The ceremony was a very emotional part of the day. After such a long engagement, there wasn’t a dry eye in the church. Lesley was adamant people would sing at her wedding and so to encourage this booked The Ravenswood Singers as their choir. The Reception: This took place in their garden. The marquee was enormous, dressed in white with pewter organza bows and lots of silver, crystal and mirrored accessories, Dandy Events created an elegant, sumptuous feel with chandeliers hanging from the ceilings and vintage grey lanterns on the table centres, surrounded by a white rose ring with a hint of green foliage.

the Flowers: The church was bursting with flowers from the pews to the stone pillars and at the alter a cascading arch of roses, hydrangeas, gyp, ammi, scabiosa, carnations, lisianthis, and iris. These were designed by Katie from The Flower Cabin in Seaton Delaval. The bride’s bouquet was made up of hydrangeas, gypsophilia, roses, freesia, lisianthis complemented by bridesmaids’ flowers of roses, gyp, lissianthus and freesia. the entertainMent: Jason issacs started the evening with a song for our first dance which encouraged everyone to the dance floor, then he sung into the early evening with his mix of swing and jazz and an occasional tune on his saxophone. transPort: They hired a vintage Beauford convertible and an old red london double decker bus which was ideal for transporting guests the Dress: after discovering a designer collection by angelina Colarusso, lesley could not find anything off the peg, so she visited yvonne at eve & adam. The dress was timeless yet dramatic, made with a wonderful corsetry and a sweetheart lace bodice. a lace inset detailing detachable sleeves was the focal point of this gown. a few layers of silk tulle were used over a tight-fitted Japanese shantung silk layer to create a cloud like feel masking the lace embellishment on the skirt. a cathedral train was designed to complete the elegance of the bride. the BriDesMaiDs: Her daughters agreed on the same dress from their first fitting. it was from accent by designer Jim Hjelm. Their dresses had a stunning metallic shimmer which was really different and a delicate handmade matching neck piece. the Men Paul was persuaded he would be comfortable in a waistcoat and trousers. These were hired from Chris Hayward mens Formalwear in Heaton. the cake: a friend’s mum made their cakes - a quirky white chocolate cake made from sweets for the kids and a very simple wedding cake with a trail of flowers. However, nine tiers maybe wasn’t as simple as they thought. made by Carols Candy Sensations PhotograPher: Close friends Graham and Donna oliver weDDing giFts: lesley bought Paul a pair of mont Blanc cuff links. Paul said she was lucky just getting him! the honeyMoon: St lucia. after landing lesley had a special surprise waiting for Paul and flew him by helicopter across the island to their resort, The Body le Sport. sPecial touches: one of lesley’s favourite pieces was the ‘ancient specimen’, a beautiful old olive tree which stood centre stage in the marquee and as the night closed in, it twinkled. For lesley it is a reminder of their bond and will be planted in their garden and admired every day. it was from Villagio Verde.

SPRING wedding

irsty and Adam Clarke met as gallery assistants working at Mima art gallery in Middlesbrough. Their wedding was a thoroughly creative affair with friends and family helping out to add their own personal touches to the day – from hand-made invitations to the best man’s band playing the first dance song. Kirsty and Adam wanted a low key wedding that was a big friends and family party. They had a small ceremony in Guisborough Register Office then decamped to a paddock – belonging to some friends - at the foot of the well-known landmark Captain Cook’s Monument where a marquee was set up to picnic the day away. The marquee was decorated with handmade bunting and pompoms with the couple and their friends and family all chipped in to help decorate. Kirsty ordered seasonal flowers from a Dutch website

and made her own bouquet of white roses. Wild seasonal flowers were placed on the tables in vintage jugs. The wedding lunch was a ‘rustic picnic’ with pies from the famous Petch’s butcher in Great Ayton served with just-baked bread and handmade chutneys, cheeses and hams. There were ice-creams to refresh throughout the day as well as a sweetie table. In the evening they had a hog roast by the bonfire in the field and sat in deckchairs and blankets as they listened to the band beneath the stars. “It was a really great atmosphere with family and friends”, said Kirsty who had bought her and her sister’s dresses from a second hand store in the Midlands. The groom and his best man had suits made in India when they visited on holiday before the wedding. “Everyone chipped in to make it memorable but it was one big relaxed party – and it passed by too soon!”

SUMMER wedding

lex McLain married Chris Irwin on Jubilee Day at St John’s Church, Egglescliffe near Yarm-on-Tees. The setting couldn’t have been more celebratory – the village green was holding a street party so the bridal party walked back to Alex’s house in the village past crowds of well-wishers and a brass band. Their reception in a marquee in the garden was the essence of summer with bright primary-coloured flowers, hand-made bunting and flower garlands everywhere. Every table was given an apple crate filled with picnic foods wrapped in brown paper and tied with string – from fillet steak to pork pies, home-made chutneys and local cheeses. It was a great way for guest to break the ice. Alex, a store manager and artist, made it a real handmade affair, printing her own invitations and handprinting a vintage napkin for every guest with their name on. She says. “We wanted to be really relaxed all day, so many weddings I’ve been to have been very stiff and formal and that was certainly not what we wanted. We wanted lots of colour, food, drink and fun. Different, mismatched flowers - different colours for each table

A

- colourful bridesmaids, perfect picnics and some gin cocktails all contributed to a beautifully bohemian day! We made the favours, the bunting, the stationary, dressed the marquee and generally worked our fingers to the bone! I even dyed the bridesmaids dresses but it was well worth it because It meant every area had our stamp on it, the stamp of summer love! “We were lucky enough to know our caterers really well but this brought its own problems as we needed to find a way of having lovely food which could be provided with no staff needed. This is how the picnic idea was hit upon which worked really well – not only was it delicious but also a real ice-breaker for guests and very convivial. “ Flowers; Adam Prest www.adamprest.co.uk Food: Alexander Macmurray www.alexandermacmurray.com

AUTUMN wedding

nna Brown’s autumnal wedding in October centred around the season so leaves and pinecones were everywhere. “Although I love flowers, I really liked the thought of being able to keep my bouquet and I’d initially looked in to drying the flowers”, says Anna, a PR executive in Newcastle who married fiancé Paul at St Paul’s RC Church in Alnwick with a reception at Guyzance Hall in Northumberland. “I came across the idea of a pinecone bouquet, which I thought was quite quirky. By that point, I’d already chosen the mocha and cream colour for my bridesmaid’s dresses, stationery etc, so I thought this would work really well”, says Anna. The unusual earthy-coloured mocha dresses were chic and perfectly in keeping with the theme. Anna adds, “We were trying to keep costs to a minimum on the décor front so by using pine cones (with candles and lights) as centre pieces and place cards on the tables, it also complemented the bouquets and didn’t break the bank. “To this day, I still love my bouquet and it now sits in pride of place in my living room on my mantelpiece as a lovely memento of such a perfect day.”

WINTER wedding

ara and Jonathon Robinson were married just before Christmas last year at St Robert’s of Newminster in Jonathon’s home town of Morpeth. Two of Lara’s closest friends sang Edelweiss as her entrance song. They served pie pops (little savoury pasties on lolly sticks) and spiced cider after the ceremony in the church hall which worked really well as people got a chance to meet each other before going back to the venue. They booked Guyzance Hall in Northumberland as a weekend stay over for close family and friends with around 100 people at the day time celebration. The theme says Lara, was best summed up as ‘Scandinavian, fifties, Christmas kitsch. Lots of old Christmas decorations, candy canes etc!’ The enlisted friends for their self-styled ‘wedding

The Sunday was a pure chill out day sitting in front of the fire, eating cheese and crackers. The cake table had about ten different sweet treats on it, including the wedding cake. The cakes were all made by their friend, Jess with the main cake being a red velvet with white frosting and blue glitter. Hair & Make-up Bride, mother-of-the-bride and bridesmaids all had both hair and make-up done professionally by Lisa Jones. The bride’s hair was in a half up half down style. As a contrast, all the bridesmaids had hair ‘up’s’ with big, messy buns. Ceremony and Reception: The ceremony and reception took place at Langley Castle in Northumberland. The ceremony was conducted in the Josephine restaurant followed by the wedding breakfast in the Stuart Suite. Midnight drinks and and bacon sandwiches were served. Photographer: Sam Baxter. He arrived at the castle for 10am to capture photos of the grounds and the preparations with everyone getting ready (including some fun shots such as the bridal party

68

sitting in the bathtub together sipping champagne), staying right through the day until the first dance which took place at 8.30pm. Sam was great with our two-year-old son and six-month-old nephew, capturing some special images with them both. Special touches: Tables for the wedding breakfast were set up by the bridal party. Mirror plates with clear glass candle holders from M&S with church pillar candles, each surrounded by six glass tealight holders and a few scatterings of silk petals, diamantes and snowflake confetti. They made wedding favours which were spice jars filled with old fashioned boiled sweets, attaching an old fashioned luggage tag with purple ribbon as a placecard. Each guest per table had a different assortment of sweets. Bridesmaids were given mirrored jewellery boxes containing a snowflake diamante necklace, the mother of the bride a bouquet of flowers and the groomsmen a Langley Castle engraved tankard. The couple’s gifts included cash, vouchers, champagne and glasses, photo frames, a kettle and a toaster (in a fab ruby red to match their new Krups coffee machine). Honeymoon: They spent a few days at the Newby Bridge Hotel in the Lake District to chill out, wind down and relax and plan on going away again later on in the year with their little boy to somewhere in Europe.

PARENT Do all you can to help make the bride’s job in dressing us little ones that much easier. Avoid any hair-raising dramas by washing our hair the night before the big day and tackling any tangles yourself before handing over to the delegated hairdresser. Let us try out our shoes in advance and buy insoles if necessary to keep tiny toes comfy all day. Do pack our favourite colouring pad or story book to provide us with some emergency entertainment when speeches are being made and a little quiet time is needed. Our favourite sleepy-time toy is perfect at the end of the night when our dancing feet have finally stopped bopping. Do take along a few favourite nibbles to keep us fuelled through the long day – especially if (like me) your little cherub is a fussy eater. While the grown-ups might be salivating at the very description of the luxurious wedding breakfast, most of us little ones will turn our noses up at pink meat on the bone and anything with claws or eyes! Don’t let your own anxiety about our performance rub off onto your little one. Although we might not always behave like little angels my mummy says invariably the sense of occasion stuns us into a special kind of silence which lasts at least long enough to make it through the all-important ceremony!

Nina Robinson, aka Little Luxe from our sister magazine Luxe, recently made a trip down the aisle as a four-year-old bridesmaid These are her observations brides take note!

Do enjoy the build up. Share the bride’s excitement at the magical things she has bought for the big day. Look at magazines she has to get an idea of what the day will look like and you might even be invited to go along to a wedding fair where you can see beautiful dresses and eat cake! Don’t stay up too late the night before – the wedding day usually starts early and finishes late and has lots of rushing around, excitement and dancing in

between. You want to have plenty of energy to enjoy it all. Do have loads of fun!

Bride Do have cool older bridesmaids who can be fantastic at looking after us little ones and making sure we are in the right place at the

right time with our shoes on and with our hairstyle intact. Older girls look like princesses and so we are more likely to do what we are told by them. Do choose our outfits carefully. Think about practicalities as well as what looks good – will the shoes hurt after an hour? Will we spend

all day adjusting straps? Will we need a shrug or bolero if it’s cold? Will we tolerate a tiara headache? Do invite other children. Even if we don’t know each other, children will play together and generate our own fun. Don’t freak out on the morning. Some bits of the wedding morning can be a bit scary for us little ones. We might be with unfamiliar people or nervous about the attention focused on us. If you remain calm we’re more likely to feel reassured about the day ahead. Failing that, try panicking out of our view! Don’t be afraid to delegate. Even the youngest of bridesmaids can help hand out favours to the guests. The more you share the load, the more you can enjoy the day. Don’t worry about the little things. Our dresses will get dirty, someone will lose their shoes, hairstyles will fall out. A bedraggled bridesmaid at the end of the night is the sign of a good wedding!

REAL LIFE wedding Roisin and gareth wood were married in Benton and the following day celebrated at Matfen Hall First Met: They were introduced by mutual best friends, who are now also married to one another. Gareth is from London and travelled up to the North East for a birthday celebration that Roisin also happened to be attending. They were friends for a couple of years before they realised that they both wanted a more. Gareth has been commuting ever since. The Proposal: Roisin and Gareth were attending the wedding of close friends in St Lucia as Gareth was best man. On the evening after the wedding they went out for a meal to a stunning restaurant on a jetty overlooking the Caribbean Sea. Gareth went to the toilet and when he returned Roisin thought he was ill as he was really pale and looked very sick. When Gareth said that he needed to tell her something, she though he was dumping her but instead he got down on one knee and proposed! Obviously she said yes! The Dress: Roisin tried on lots of different dresses but never seemed to find that special one until her close friend pointed out a Mori Lea dress in YAP in Newcastle and after she tried it on she knew she had found her perfect dress. Bridesmaid Dresses: Roisin had to limit herself to six bridesmaids and one flower girl and was keen that everything did not look too formal. The three older bridesmaids wore floor length twist and wrap dresses from BHS in purple, fuchsia and jade. The younger bridesmaids and flower girl wore dresses from River Island and John Lewis. Hair and makeup on bride and all bridesmaids was done by gemma@wedding – beauty. The ceremony and reception: Roisin and Gareth were married at St Aiden’s, Benton on the evening before the big day with only close friends and family in attendance. The following day they had a “renewal of vows” in front of all of their nearest and dearest at Matfen Hall. It was a perfect, bright, crisp beautiful day and all of the guests commented on how stunning the venue looked. The whole ceremony was magical and they wilI never forget the entrance into the Great Hall or all of the guests singing Madness – It Must Be Love. The photographer: The photographer was Nikki

72

Rogerson, she came along on the day with another photographer, they were very patient, attentive and calming and they captured the very essence of the day in their stunning photographs. Special Touches: Gareth and Roisin wanted the day to be fun, vibrant and colourful. The theme was Disney and each table was named after a Disney film and had a snow globe as the centre piece. We had the most beautiful flowers from the Secret Garden which matched with their colour scheme. They hired a candy cart, caricature artist and everyone commented on how wonderful the fireworks were in the evening. One of the most special touches was that the best man, Gareth’s brother, did a free style football performance and led Gareth to believe he had Arsene Wenger on the phone. Wedding Gifts: Gareth wrote the lyrics to a beautiful song for Roisin and also a book of wedding poetry. Roisin bought Gareth a Hugo Boss watch and made him a scrap book of all the people who have inspired Gareth throughout his life. It included hand written messages from his family but also from Arsene Wenger, Gyles Brandreth, Coldplay, Embrace and Stornoway. Honeymoon: A mini-moon in Venice and Berlin.

Loved Up columnist, bride-to-be and wedding planner for Dandy events, Tanya Hardman checks out what’s trending for North East brides Colour: Sage green and teal are gradually easing purple from the top spot when it comes to colour schemes for receptions. Vintage: Is going nowhere! Creams, soft pinks and pale green colourways are really popular for that country-garden style wedding. Hollywood: We have a new range of chairs made from clear perspex which we team with a mirrored table top, sparkly, silvery candles and great lighting from underneath – it looks amazing, very chic and glamorous for a real ‘wow’ factor. Chairs: More people are seeking out chairs made from distressed wood rather than using chair covers and there are different natural wood colourways on offer. The reception lounge: A chill-out area away from the dance floor with a relaxed for guests to eat, drink and mingle. The perfect spot for a cocktail corner, sweetie trays or games. Loads of lace: From a full-on lace dress Kate-

style to just a touch draped around chair cover, lace is definitely here to stay with its soft, romantic connotations. Lace can be chic and sophisticated, or when paired with rustic or vintage elements, a bit more whimsical. Food stations: Creative food ideas from candy floss to taco trucks to late-night barbecues. Interaction: Couples hiring everything from live event artists, on-site poets and dance instructors to magicians and tarot card readers. The ‘after-party’: A party after the reception is officially over. For some couples, receptions will be divided in to three distinct sections, the cocktail hour with low-key music and food, the dinner “hour” with all the expected wedding traditions and two to three hours of fun where it’s completely acceptable for Grandma and Grandpa to head on home. The 20s: A 1920’s vintage look with the popularity of shows such as Downton Abbey and a remake of The

Friendly feasting Forget formal food is going, funky, sociable and fun to make the big feast a relaxed affair. Loved up tastes the latest trends

ow about a great big convivial pie-sharing moment? Or getting to grips with a slowcooked leg of lamb for the table? Few things are as satisfying as a table of food shared with your favourite people. At a wedding there’s an even greater sense of shared fun and occasion of course – and let’s face it, on the big day you spend plenty of time sitting at the table so why not make it a place of theatre? Sharing dishes are all the rage with the new food trend of pared-down, rustic eating. So says the North’s best-known restaurateur, Terry Laybourne who has brought the concept to his Broad Chare pub in Newcastle to great effect - and is now offering it to wedding day diners at his popular Bistro

21 restaurant in Durham. It couldn’t be better placed as a venue – the bistro is housed in the same building as the newly relocated Durham Register Office so you just scamper around the corner after your ceremony and carry on with the party. Bistro 21 itself is a lovely, quirky old building that can fit the needs of any size of wedding party – from an intimate group of ten up to 60 taking over the whole restaurant. Small groups can dine in barrel-vaulted private rooms and there is a private dining room for 30 upstairs. Inside the restaurant there are small courtyard areas that are great for post-ceremony drinks, music and chatter, not to mention a fine sense of laid back rustic style in terms of decor with its chalky painted walls and French-inspired furniture, making the most of the building’s characterful architecture. Says Terry, “What we are about as a wedding venue is essentially NOT being a standard wedding venue but offering the food and service you would expect

Julia Braime, editor of www.bridesupnorth.co.uk explains why you’ll be making rainbows in 2013 and beyond

all things Bright & Beautiful lame Kate middleton, but the last few wedding seasons have been a bit of a white out. Gorgeous and understated in all the right ways, yes. Packing a punch of fun? Not so much. i was an early champion of the all-white wedding, believing that it heralded an end to the chair-covershave-to-match-your-bridesmaids’-knickers syndrome, and a return to elegance and sophistication. it took a really cool bride to let her maids wear white too, right? But then, like all trends, everyone became that really cool bride, and it all became a little (dare i say it?) bland. i don’t think i’m alone either. it could be that the wedding industry is feeling a little washed out after exploring every shade of pale available – diamond white, strong white or brilliant white - but i’m happy to report that colour seems to be making a comeback. and as we all know, this isn’t a business that does things by halves. Forget all white, how about all the colours of the rainbow? Some of the most fabulous celebrations i’ve seen recently threw the muted mood boards out of the window and let the sunshine in instead.

B

More is More after all, if you can’t decide on one accent colour, why not add them all? The key to rocking this trend is to go the whole way with it: if you are going to go bright, do it with gusto and don’t look back. Think rainbows, think punchy patterns and then mix it all up some more to add a splash of fun to your big day.

need to know Colour Blocking Bridesmaids Now’s the time to let your best girls’ personalities shine on. Why not ask each of them to pick the same style in their favourite colour, or go for varying cuts in a pretty multi-coloured fabric? Consider the style of your day carefully: a vintage style look can carry cutesy prints and bright sashes, whereas an elegant celebration might call for a variety of tonal shades. Whatever the look you are going for, any theme can carry colour.

In The Details If you’d rather keep things classic than chase rainbows, try adding a dash of subtle colour to brighten your day and pop in your photographs. Pucker up with a red statement lip or let some hot pink heels peep out from under that ivory lace fishtail. Colour yourself pretty!

How Does Your Garden Grow? A rainbow celebration will always be a little wild, and the wildest flowers are always the most vibrant. Choose hand tied bunches of mismatched seasonal blooms and meadow flowers for a naturally stunning look and to add punch to your palette.

6. Deadlifts These are especially useful when you want to sweep your partner off their feet and carry them to the bedroom. 7. Calf raises Very important for that final few inches while standing! 8. Get more zzzs… Exercising regularly helps to promote natural sleep and getting seven to eight hours of decent kip a night increases testosterone levels. 9. Circuit training Using high-intensity aerobics, circuit training helps build strength and muscular endurance – just what you need for a night of steamy passion. 10. HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) Performing very high intensity intervals for a short period of time followed by a period of rest, this is great for building up your endurance. 11. Tabata Tabata combines circuit training and HIIT, not only is this great for improving endurance, it also helps to reduce body fat. 12. Kegel exercises Ladies, this exercise involves repeatedly squeezing the pelvic floor muscle (the one that helps you hold your pee in) which increases libido by creating sexual energy flow.

13. Nutrition Not only does a healthy balanced diet do wonders for your waistline when partnered with regular exercise, but many healthy foods can increase your sex-drive. Check out our favourite foods from 14-19. However, if fruit and veg aren’t your thing. Check out Yaeyama Chlorella – a whole table of veg in a few tiny pills. 14. Chilli Scientifically proven to affect your libido by mimicking arousal, quickening the pulse and stimulating the release of endorphins. 15. Avocado Avocados contain high levels of folic acid to give you more energy. They contain vitamin B6 and potassium - two elements that help increase libido in both men and women. 16. Asparagus Research indicates that asparagus contains foliate, which is necessary for histamine production and histamine is necessary for both males and females to reach orgasm. 17. Bananas Bananas contain the bromelain enzyme that increases libido and can help reverse impotence in men. Potassium also prevents cramp. 18. Celery A great source food for sexual stimulation as it contains androsterone, an odourless hormone released through male perspiration and turns women on. 19. Dark chocolate dipped strawberries A seriously sexy snack! Chocolate can be beneficial if consumed in moderation as it contains phenylethylamine, a chemical that produces the feeling of being in love, plus dark chocolate has anti-oxidants to help maintain the immune system. 20. Physio ball Invest in a good physio ball to strengthen all of the muscles in the core, including the abs and back, and challenge balance, stability and overall co-ordination, all of which are key ingredients for perfect lovemaking. 21. Pelvic tilt This is a difficult one to get the hang of but once you do it can make a big difference to your sex sessions.

22. Shrugs Basically shrugging whilst holding weights – very important if you want to be able to hold your partner whilst standing. 23. Back extension If you’re going to spend any amount of time with your back arched or lifting with your back you’ll need this exercise to strengthen your back muscles. 24. Get your Om on Create a union between mind and body and help with both flexibility and strength to prepare you for any bedroom activities with yoga. These are our favourite poses (25-33): 25. Sun Salutation Start with this sequence of 10 flowing poses to improve the flexibility of the muscles and spinal column. 26. The plough This lengthens the spine and relieves tension in the upper back whilst helping you to focus. 27. The pigeon A great yoga position for opening out the hips and also helps with blood flow to the groin. 28. Wide leg straddle pose Helping to strengthen ankles and legs whilst developing flexibility in the hips and groin area. 29. Plank This is a good pose to help build core stability and strengthen arms and shoulder muscles. 30. Standing inner thigh stretch A position to strengthen leg muscles and a great pose in which to practice breathing exercises. 31. Lotus position This position helps to calm the mind and lighten your mood whilst opening out the groin muscles. 32. Bridge This uses your entire body, helping to develop upper body muscles whilst acting as one of the most beneficial back bends and increasing spinal flexibility. 33. Cat/cow A position that will get the hips rotating and the back flexible whilst stimulating the core and muscles around your spine. >>

34. Holistic therapies Natural remedies that are renowned for increasing libido and getting you in the mood. Our preferred holistic methods include (35-38): 35. Meditation Often the libido is lowered because we can’t relax and enjoy the moment as we are trapped in far-away thoughts, so incorporate meditation into your daily routine to help you unwind. 36. Full body massage Exchange massages with your partner at home or go for a couple’s massage to improve, muscle recovery, blood flow and sexual arousal. 37. Tantric Sex This has stood the test of time and is endorsed by many celebrities. Remember that infamous Sex And The City scene? 38. Give an Indian head massage Indian head massage is a fantastic way to relax and clear blocked energy channels. The head, neck, ears and mouth are all one big erogenous zone – some people also like a bit of hair pulling. 39. Straps and Cables There are some great exercises using leather straps, cables and rubber. We’re sure all budding Mr Greys will have some of these lying around. 40. Hip extension Standing on one leg with a leather strap around the other move the strapped leg back a little using your bum. Good for balance and great for your bum. 41. Hip abduction As in tip 40 but moving your strapped leg out to the side – this will give you a bum to die for. 42. Gym environment Men and women in tight-fitting workout-wear,

surrounded by mirrors, grunts and moans and the mild scent of sweat and massage oils in the air can, believe it or not, all boost arousal. 43. Lose the smoke, not the fire If you’re a smoker quit. It causes the blood vessels to narrow, decreasing blood flow to the sexual organs. Plus no one enjoys kissing an ashtray. 44. Naked exercise Maybe not in your local gym - it would definitely get you noticed and probably arrested - this is more one to try at home. Why be restricted? 45. Foot fetish Even to those who don’t admit it, the feet are among the top erogenous zones in males and females, as well as being the foundation for most exercise. Try exchanging foot massages. 46. Suspension training Julian would love this. To increase your core stability try some classics like press ups, pull ups and tucks while suspended from straps attached to wall or bars. 47. Vibro Power Plate A vibrating piece of gym equipment, this is definitely one for the ladies. No description necessary… 48. Gym speed dating If you’re a fan of speed dating, what better way to meet a fit partner? 49. Music for the soul Don’t underestimate the power of sound. Experiment with different sounds to create a sexy playlist for that post-gym workout. 50. Retro romance Good old-fashioned tenderness is the final key to igniting passion. Eye contact, embracing and kissing are vital.

My reception is in a rambling old property which doesn’t lend itself to formality – I’d like a bit of a vintage vibe - any suggestions? sarah: Vintage has been huge over the last few years and we created a range especially to cater for this. Start with tablecloths in bark taffeta in soft gold or pastel shades with vintage lace overlays. Chair covers in soft cream tones with lace chair veils flowing down the back in tones of champagne or ivory add a luxury twist. Silk napkins in pastel shades rolled loosely and tied with strings of pearls add to the theme. There are some companies that specialise in vintage crockery and a florist would advise on the best flowers to suit the theme.

I have a big bust and am not fond of strapless dresses what do you suggest for a flattering shape and fit? I want to feel comfortable and supported in the dress.

I feel under pressure to have a wedding hair ‘do’ What are your thoughts? aMelia: Kate middleton’s look will definitely have influenced brides but i would advise not to feel under pressure to do something really oTT for your wedding day. if you really want to, then great (just make sure you have lots of trial runs) but if you don’t then it might tarnish your big day and make you feel uncomfortable – the aim of your wedding day look is ‘you on a fantastic day’, not ‘you trying to look like someone else’. Simple up-dos are perfect wedding styles. Whether sleek for an elegant look or, slightly disheveled for more laid-back glamour, knots, bun, and twists of all shapes and sizes are making their way down the altar. Hair swept round to the side is still very popular so you could consider a low side bun for simple chic that is right on trend. if you want to wear your hair down then experiment with long, ethereal waves – soft flowing hair with romantic waves can look effortlessly gorgeous whilst film star pin curls a la Dita Von Teese is much more Hollywood glam.

diary of bride to be

tanya hardman iS ready for lift off!

keep calm and carry on Jekyll & BriDe! the Final instalMent if, like me, you’re getting married in 2013 then a strange thing may have happened to you when the clock struck midnight on New year’s eve. No, we didn’t turn in to pumpkins, but we were hit by the sudden realisation that we’re no longer getting married next year - 2013 is our year, and it’s here! Since getting engaged we’ve been merrily amusing ourselves with the lighter side of wedding planning not imagining for one second that time would catch up with us. But now our mantra “there’s loads of time” has instantly been replaced with “it’ll be here before we know it”. i know that some of you started 2013 in a blind panic trying to familiarise yourself with the wedding planning you abandoned months ago in favour of Christmas shopping and office parties. Wedding professionals tell me that during January phones ring off the hook as brides turn into a frenzied bunch at the rapidly approaching ‘to do’ list. as a wedding planner i received many calls like this, but don’t be fooled, as a bride i made just as many. at the time of writing i’m getting married in 85 days, 23 hours, 45 minutes and 10, 9, 8 seconds… i know this because i was foolish enough to set up an e-wedding countdown and to link it to everything that i encounter on a daily basis. i have turned myself in to a pull-your-hair-out, panic stricken B2B and every time i check my phone or my emails i am reminded of how much i have to do and how little time. Big mistake! Professional Tanya understands that the wedding is planned with the utmost attention to detail and that i’m right on schedule and on budget (well sort of, we didn’t exactly budget for two wedding dresses but ssshhh). However, Bride Tanya is completely irrational and frankly she needs a good talking to! i am Jekyll and Bride! if you’re struggling to regain control you need to begin by identifying what you have done so far and what’s left. Here at loved Up we’ve put together a Wedding Planning Checklist which you can find on our Facebook page and on our website – and you will

have seen it in the mag by now. Sit down without distraction and go through it, crossing off anything you have already done. i bet you are far more organised than you realise! Put any key deadlines in your diary, such as when payments need to be made and what appointments are coming up. look at what’s left to do and assign yourself (and others) tasks. Play to people’s strengths and learn to delegate. Just do it! managing each task in bite-sized chunks will remove the blind panic that can overwhelm us when we imagine tackling each task simultaneously and single-handed. your final few weeks should be a time for restful sleep, healthy eating and finishing touches. aim to have accounts settled and bills paid early to remove any temptation to stress out. enjoy beauty appointments, your hen party and blissed out days making favours or writing place cards. like planning anything, organising your wedding can be daunting (and at times very challenging) but these events shape our lives and it is a time to treasure. in amongst all the frantic calls, the never ending list of errands, chasing up rSVPs and mediating what seem like irreconcilable family disputes, you must find the time to pause and to indulge yourself. Treat yourself to a cheeky glass of fizz after a dress fitting, or take a bit longer than you needed to sample the wedding cakes, or tell the chef that you really can’t decide on the canapés and it’s probably best if you tried them once more! make your time work for you and steal some precious moments back because you will treasure them for the rest of your life. Happy Wedding Planning.
