WE’re loved up

REAL-LIFE wedding Martin and Ruth Smith were married on December 30 at Matfen Hall, Northumberland First Met Ruth and Martin were introduced through Ruth’s best friend (also called Ruth) when they began flat sharing together. After a few nights out together with friends they both realised there was something more going on and Martin made his move! The Proposal After asking Ruth’s dad’s permission, Martin proposed to Ruth on a post-Christmas dinner walk in 2012. They had gone up to St Oswald’s, a small chapel in the middle of a field on the top of a hill overlooking the Northumberland countryside. Martin got down on one knee in the mud and after a few attempts to understand Ruth’s “YES!” through her tears, they then went back to the Christmas celebrations to toast their engagement with their family. The Dress Ruth really enjoyed the hunt for the perfect dress. During a morning looking at dresses alone Ruth found her beautiful lace and satin Justin Alexander dress, but had to get her mum and sister’s opinion first. When she saw the smiles on their faces when they saw it, she knew it was definitely “The One”. He Wore Martin hired a grey morning suit for himself and his groomsmen with cravats in lavender and grape that coordinated with the bridesmaid’s dresses. He wore cufflinks inherited from his grandad.

18

Bridesmaids Ruth’s sister Grace and closest friends Ruth and Beccy wore beautiful chiffon dresses with a satin waistband similar to Ruth’s wedding dress. The dresses, from Sorella Vita, were in coordinating shades of grey, lavender and aubergine. Ceremony and Reception Ruth and Martin knew Matfen Hall was their perfect venue for the ceremony and reception as soon as they saw it. With its grand staircase and beautiful fireplaces, it also had the added bonus of having the lovely Christmas tree to make it extra special. Photographer They spent a long time searching for photographers on the internet, but as soon as they met Katie Byram they looked no further. Katie was friendly and approachable and produced the most beautiful photographs. Special Touches Martin’s mum Andrea knitted lots of woodland animals for the table centres. Ruth’s mum Susan made fudge for the wedding favours and her Auntie Christine made the beautiful four-tiered wedding cake. They also had a four tiered wedding pie made by the Geordie Bakers. Honeymoon The happy couple spent a few days relaxing in the Lakes after the wedding and plan on booking a longer trip away later in the year.

WE’re LOVED UP

REAL-LIFE wedding Rebecca & Christopher Ewen from BURNOPFIELD were married at Gibside chapel First Met: Rebecca, 27, a data analyst, and Chris, 26, an accountant, met on their first day at primary school before growing up together through secondary school and sixth form. The Proposal: We still look back on the day we got engaged as one of the happiest days of our lives. We visited Seaton Delaval Hall and went for a walk through the beautiful gardens. It was a crisp but sunny day in November and there was nobody else around. We took a seat in the rose garden and Chris gave me a poem he’d written. The last page said “and there’s one important question I’ve still got to ask…” Chris went down on one knee and presented a beautiful ring. It was really lovely telling all of our family and friends the wonderful news. The Dress: The wedding dress was an Essense of Australia dress from Accent Original on Mosley Street, Newcastle. It was a strapless ivory dress with a sweetheart neck and A-line fit. The dress had lace detail and a long train. It was simple but stunning and I wore a lace veil and elegant headpiece to accessorise. He Wore: Traditional tails in a medium grey colour and slim-fit. The men all wore ivory coloured

24

waistcoats, with the ushers wearing red cravats and Christopher an ivory cravat to match the wedding dress. They had natural button-hole arrangements made by the florists. All of the suits were from Simply Suits in Shotley Bridge, County Durham. Bridesmaids: The bridesmaids wore floor-length red dresses from Coast. Ceremony and Reception: The ceremony was held at midday in the beautiful Gibside grounds. The ceremony itself was held inside the chapel at Gibside. This was followed by drinks and canapés in the gardens to the side of the chapel. The reception was held at Kirkley Hall in Ponteland. The venue was stunning and glorious sunshine meant that the gardens and outside area were put to good use all day. Photographer: Nicky Rogerson, whom they first met at a wedding fayre at Gibside chapel. We loved her style of natural photographs and friendly approach. We recently received our wedding album and were blown away by the quality of the photographs. Nicky went above and beyond when she came back to Kirkley Hall, after finishing for the day, to capture a beautiful sunset and take more photographs. Special Touches: We decided that instead of having typical wedding favours we wanted to donate an amount to Cancer Research. Honey moon: A two-week holiday to Morocco. Our first week was spent in the hustle and bustle of Marrakech, followed by a week to relax and unwind on the coast.

Shirlie Kemp photographs a stunning sunshine ceremony in the US hen you have guaranteed fabulous, sunshiney days then creating a lush French countrystyle wedding becomes that bit easier. Photographer Shirlie Kemp loves soft, feminine boho-wedding style and has always loved the imaginative work of US florist and wedding stylist Tricia Fountaine. “I had wanted to work with her for quite a while, so when she asked me to shoot her French country-style wedding, I was on the first plane out,” says Shirlie. “She lives on an amazing ranch on the coast of Santa Barbara called Dos Pueblos and has a fantastic barn on the beach which she styles for weddings.

lavender cottons wafting on the breeze! Tricia started off as a florist and is now a hugely successful wedding and events stylist in California. “Her thing is vintage, rustic, whimsical wedding style on the sunny Californian coast – glorious in every way,” says Shirlie. The wedding was set out in an avocado orchard on the ranch with ‘French laundry’ one of the influences. Don’t think dirty laundry though – more antique cottons scented with lavender wafting on the breeze! Enamel jugs and vintage baths were filled with lavender and heather plants as well as wild country flowers. Long wooden tables groaned with French cheeses, fruits and wine, baguettes and charcuterie. perfect day Shirlie and Martin Kemp renewed their vows in St Lucia with her pop pal Pepsi part of the act hirlie Kemp was one half of 80s pop band Pepsi and Shirlie. She married Martin Kemp of Spandau Ballet in November 1988 in St Lucia in a ‘let’s just do it’ ceremony planned in just a few days. Some 25 years on the couple travelled back to St Lucia, as Shirlie, now a photographer, explained to Loved Up. “When we got married it was only the two of us and a last-minute thing, we booked it when we arrived at the hotel and I always wished I’d had a couple of friends with me when we did it. “So going back to St Lucia and having my two children and of course Pepsi and her husband James with us made it feel really special. “We did our wedding vows on the beach and then went for a sunset cruise in Pepsi's boat 'Good Expectations' (she and James are based there - 'Jus Sail' is the company), which was a lovely way to celebrate, then we had dinner in the evening.”

Shirlie’s dress: “I went straight to a beautiful bridal shop near where I live called Ellie Sanderson in Beaconsfield. I was so happy with the Sassi Holford dress I wore and so was Martin, he loved it - it had a vintage, Grace Kelly feel to it! The hotel: We stayed at Sandals Grande Resort in a private villa, which was really lovely and we were very well looked after. They made the vow renewal very easy which I needed, as it was only organised a week before. Martin was directing a movie and was not sure he had time to go away, so it was very last minute once again but it all worked wonderfully.”

dream of a theme

WHIMSICAL shley, 28, is a disability officer and Daniel George, 29, a high security engineer. They live in Seaham, County Durham. Ashley and Daniel spent their big day at Alnwick Garden and Treehouse last September. “I met Daniel when I was 17 at a house party that my brother and I had when our parents were away,” says Ashley. “He just randomly walked in and my neighbour introduced us. We hit it off straight away.” The couple had been together for ten years and Ashley was very surprised when Daniel popped the question on holiday in California. “He asked my dad for permission before we went on holiday and spent the whole trip trying to find the right moment to ask,” recalls Ashley. “Initially, he wanted to ask me when we visited Yosemite National Park, but in his words, ‘I have the attention span of a gnat’, so the proposal took place on the drive back to our hotel. “Daniel pulled the car up to a place called Mono Lake, and as we were sitting on a bench overlooking the lake and mountains, he proposed. My first reaction was to ask if he was being serious. Not appreciated by him, of course but, obviously, I said yes!” Finding the perfect dress was not an easy task for Ashley, as she is very petite. Eventually she found Heather Harker who, after making Ashley’s dress, has now set up her own business, Alice Elizabeth Couture. “The off-the-peg dresses were way too heavy and I wanted something special just for me. Heather had the same visions for the dress as I did and was able to let me know what would, and wouldn’t work.” Having had a bad experience with a few makeup trials, Ashley decided to go it alone but entrusted her beautiful hair colour with Lush Hair and Beauty in Darlington. Capella Hair Design in Alnwick took care of her updo, as well as her bridesmaids and mother. RJ Thompson and band played at the couple’s nighttime do. “From the start of us planning our wedding, we always said that we wanted a band,” said Ashley. “The music they played was upbeat and everyone at the party loved them. Comments from all our friends and family came for months afterwards. “Having them play our first dance song, “Somewhere in my Heart” by Aztec Camera, which was also Daniel’s favourite song, made it so much more personal.” Ashley’s favourite part of the day was Daniel singing a song for her in his speech. “We had so much fun on the day and it went so fast. However, that only meant that the honeymoon was next!”

BEACHY atherine, 33, is a teacher and Joe Doonan, 33, a support worker. They live in Gosforth, Newcastle. Joe proposed to Katherine while they were on holiday in Lyme Regis. He waited until the sun was setting on a walk along the beach, and got down on one knee. “I met Joe on a night out with mutual friends,” said Katherine. “There’s an ongoing disagreement about who was responsible for getting us together!” Katherine and Joe married at Newton Hall last August, falling in love with the place the minute they saw it. “It was such a romantic venue and the beach being so close was a big bonus. One of my favourite parts of the day was having photos taken on the beach.” Katherine found her perfect dress at YAP Bridal Boutique in Newcastle. “My dress was by Diane Harbridge and I felt amazing in it. Darren from Evolution did my hair and makeup; I couldn’t have trusted anyone else as he has been my hairdresser for ten years.” As it had poured with rain the day before, Katherine

was worried that her wedding day would be a soggy occasion. However, the day turned out perfect for the pictures on the beach and the sun shone all day. “There were so many little touches that made our day as special as it was,” said Katherine. “Our tables were named after sweets as Joe has a massive sweet tooth. Each table had a jar of sweets that matched the name, which we put in my gran’s Kilner jars. One of my favourite memories is watching people trading sweets with each other. Everyone got so possessive!” As well as having the Purple Supper Band as their entertainment on the night, the couple also had Joe’s family band - The Mighty Doonans - who played a ceilidh to get everyone moving. “It was absolutely perfect,” said Katherine. “The dance floor was full to the end!” Photography by www.katieleephotography.co.uk Words: Katherine Weir

Bright&beautiful izzie, 25, is a teaching assistant and Andrew O’Sullivan, 26, is an accountant. They live in Whitley Bay. Eshott Hall in Northumberland was the setting for the couple’s super-colourful wedding which they made their own with injections of colour at every turn. “I had lots of little helpers in the run-up to, and on the morning of the wedding to perfect our day,” said Lizzie. “The sweetie cart, the wedding favours, centre pieces and flowers were amazing and we placed big multi-coloured tissue pom-poms around the grounds of Eshott Hall to show off our vibrant theme.” Lizzie met Andrew through a family friend and they hit it off from the very first meeting. “Andrew surprised me on our first date with a train ride and tickets to Edinburgh Zoo!” said Lizzie. “Then three years later, on our anniversary, he surprised me again by proposing.

have them in different colours went perfectly with my summer theme,” said Lizzie. “I wanted the girls to look bright and colourful for the day.” The bride’s dress was an Amanda Wyatt from Elizabeth George Bridal in Middlesbrough, and her hair and makeup was done by Carli Pearson. Although Lizzie describes her and Andrew’s big day as perfect, there were a few hitches along the way. “We were meant to have our ceremony in one of the gardens with a cute wooden pagoda, but as the morning progressed it began to rain a little and we didn’t want to take the risk,” said Lizzie. “Our backup plan was just as gorgeous though, as Eshott Hall owns a really sweet reading room within Eshott village, which used to be a chapel. Our florist and the team at Eshott made it look beautiful and it was just a fiveminute walk through the very small Eshott village into the grounds of Eshott Hall. It was lovely to walk back with all of our guests after the ceremony!” As well as a Snapperazzi booth for memorable pictures of the night, Lizzie and Andrew had something up their sleeves that they had been working on for some time. “We surprised all of our guests with a choreographed ballroom dance in the evening to Nat King Cole’s ‘L.O.V.E’. Everyone loved it!”

acheal, 30, is a student social worker and Chris Lowden, 30, a gas engineer. They live in Washington. Chris proposed to Racheal on Christmas Eve, with the idea of having a double celebration the next day when both families were coming over for Christmas Day dinner. “I was mad at Chris for not getting me a Christmas card and then he randomly handed me one,” said Racheal. “I opened it and it read, “Merry Christmas to my fiancé!” I didn’t get it. Why had he got the wrong card? Then I looked up and he was on one knee with a box containing my dream engagement ring. It was a complete surprise and it totally caught me off guard. “The proposal was heartfelt and private, in our first home together, just the two of us. He knew me well; I would have hated a fuss somewhere public.” Racheal and Chris met in the local pub they had both been going to for years. They became friends and love blossomed later. The couple’s wedding followed a vintage theme inspired by Racheal’s lace veil, which she found months before she chose her dress. “The theme complemented our ceremony at Holy Trinity Church in

The proposal was heartfelt and private, in our first home together, just the two of us. He knew me well; I would have hated a fuss somewhere public Washington, followed by our wedding venue at my parents’ beautiful old barn conversion. “My dress was Diango by Pronovias from Mia Sposa in Newcastle. I fell in love with the lace and the classic design, and felt that it was meant to be as the lace on the dress matched the lace of my veil perfectly.” As with all weddings, the personal touches make the day, and for Racheal and Chris it was all the little details they had planned for their guests. “Our personalised cocktail list not only made our guests merry but also made them giggle,” said Racheal. “We made the cake table from old barrels borrowed from our local garden centre and a scaffolding plank. We also hired loos for our guests to use, with the ladies decorated in Hollywood movie stars and the men’s decorated as superheroes. Guests absolutely loved it!” Looking back on how their wedding day turned out last summer, Racheal said: “We both didn’t realise just how amazing the day would be and how it would beat any expectations we had. We were very lucky to have such a special and personal venue and it’s a day we both dream we could relive and enjoy again.”

The best hands...

how to nail it Sarah Usher, Rockliffe Hall’s senior nail technician gives tips for perfect wedding nails 1. Always have your nails done before your wedding day. Nail varnish and wedding dresses do not mix on the big day, no matter how perfect you want them to look. 2. Have regular manicures a few weeks before the wedding day as this gives your nails a chance to have a fresh start and grow stronger and healthier. It is also important you do your homework by keeping them in good condition at home. 3. Massage Argan oil cuticle drops into the nail as this will help stimulate and encourage nail growth. Argan oil

and the anti-oxidant rich jojoba oil will penetrate into the nail and helps with flexibility to keep them supple. For a more intense treatment, the Argan oil hand cream can be used over the top to seal all the nourishment in and will double the effect. It’s a great anti-aging product! 4. The Orly Gel FX Manicure (by ORLY) lasts 10 days or more - perfect for wedding day and honeymoon. 5. Every bride has her hair and makeup trial and their dress fitting so why not a nail trial? A good way to test how long your nails will last and try new colours.

savvy bride knows to keep the bridesmaids on side. Their smiles will stay sweet if they have some input in to what they wear on the big day. Here’s how • Don’t dress them all in the same style and colour if they are a mis-match of shapes, sizes and ages. One of the nicest trends for attendants is different tones of colours and dress styles to suit them. If they are self-conscious in strapless then go for a dress with straps for support: If they are worried about looking shapeless, define their waist with a sash or a full-skirt. • More and more brides are looking at designer dresses for their maids. Something they will love to wear afterwards. At Fenwick in Newcastle there are some beautiful Vivienne Westwood gowns that look striking and make every bridesmaid feel a million dollars. A lot more brides choose designer dresses for their attendants – it keeps everyone happy! Brides & maids – a happy marriage: The number one conflict is over money. Be clear, and help out whenever possible. The number two conflict is over the dress. Discomfort (both physical and emotional) can lead to disharmony.

Make sure that your bridesmaids try on their dresses and accessories several times. Make sure your bridesmaids are getting enough attention and have a clear idea of what to do and what you expect. Don't be too demanding. Remember that your bridesmaids have a life beyond planning for your wedding. Extend thanks often and do little things to make your bridesmaids happy. The little things make a huge difference – a new lippy is worth a thousand words. Don't forget that you may have to be a bridesmaid at one of your bridesmaid's weddings in the near future.

no place like home

REAL-LIFE wedding The wedding venue really felt like home for Stephen Patterson - because it was his childhood playground When Stephen Patterson and fiancée Jennifer were planning their wedding there was never going to be a debate about the venue. That’s because his childhood home, Newton Hall in Northumberland, had been transformed into a coolerthan-cool wedding destination. Jennifer is originally from Guildford and Stephen, 35, who is communications director for the Newcastle business improvement district company, NE1, considered getting married in the south. But after visiting a few venues the lure of the North was irresistible – and after visiting Newton Hall they were hooked. “Jen’s lived in Newcastle for five years now and sees it as her home so we went to an open day at Newton Hall,” said Stephen. “It didn’t feel like my old home at all, we were blown away when we got there. It’s poles apart from what it used to be; there has been a lot of time and money spent on it, all of the bedrooms were different and the part of the house where you get married was completely different.” After picking their perfect venue Stephen and Jen, a planning consultant, set the date. The night before the wedding Stephen stayed at his parents’ home in Bamburgh, then met his ‘team’ party the next day. “We had a few beverages at the Castle Inn in Bamburgh before heading off to Newton Hall at noon. “One of the most memorable parts of the day had to be when our four-year-old daughter, Bella, walked down the aisle. She was our flower girl and she smiled

68

from ear to ear the whole way down. Jen then followed her and she looked stunning; it was really emotional but something I’ll definitely remember.” Both the ceremony and reception were held at Newton Hall. “We wanted the wedding to be relaxing and enjoyable for everyone. We didn’t want people to feel uncomfortable; we just wanted everyone to enjoy the day and tried to make it quite informal.” After the stunning ceremony the newly-wedded couple and 110 guests ate a fabulous meal. “The range of food was fantastic, we had king prawns with wasabi mayonnaise to start and there was crumble to finish.” The meal was shortly followed by live music, a DJ and lots of dancing. “We had a live percussionist playing the bongos and a live sax player.” www.brighton-photo.com/

ASK THE EXPERTS DiLEMMAS SortED, iDEAS inSpirED AnD tipS to MAKE thE DAy go SwiMMingLy My wedding is in the summer – I really want to avoid ‘shiny face’ and faded foundation syndrome – is there a failsafe way to keep makeup good all day? VICtorIa: There are countless products available that will help to keep your makeup looking flawless and in place all day. Look out for long-wear formulations. A good daily skin care routine is essential - regularly exfoliating, cleansing and toning will help to ensure that your skin is in tip-top condition for makeup application. I recommend applying products in thin layers by lightly pressing into the skin with warm fingers - choose formulations that are correct for your skin type.

Use a primer and apply foundation only where you need it and build up coverage gradually. There are products available to mist over your face after makeup application - they are cooling and help to refresh makeup throughout the day. To control any unwanted shine - use powdered beauty papers - they will fit neatly into your maid’s clutch bag or purse and are perfect for discreetly keeping any shine at bay.

My three grown-up bridesmaids are all wearing short, prom-style dresses. They have long hair and they are all up for a statement ‘do’ on the day - any suggestions? Should they all have the same style? VICtorIa Nowadays brides are relaxed and very happy for bridesmaids to express their individuality, and gowns often have multiway options making them flattering for all body shapes. The same goes for hair - opting for the same up-do doesn’t necessarily mean that the girls will all look the same - variation in hair colour, texture, length and density all help to make the same up-do look a little different. For a winter or spring wedding I would be tempted to choose something classic like a ballerina bun or a French pleat. you could make each one a little different by bringing in plaited or twisted details. For summer or autumn - you could opt for a plaited design - something more whimsical and carefree like a princess, halo or circle braid, each one similar but not the same.

Any suggestions for quirky stationery? Kathryn I think of all the things to do with weddings, personalised stationery is a favourite – fonts are fabulous things. Go DIy or steal a friend who is a design whizz – we all have one! create ‘save the date’ postcards by getting a photo of you and your fiancé holding up a sign with the date scribbled on – a chalkboard, Scrabble letters, print blocks. Stamp kits are good – print details on luggage tags. I love the idea of having lots of kids around at the wedding and want to make them feel involved. Any ideas? Kathryn Dressing up areas and the photo booth – you won’t be able to keep the little ones away – they will love it. you can get cheap ‘props’ – paper specs and dressy-up moustaches etc. If you have very small guests how about making them a picnic party table with their own picnic-box of goodies and little drinks in vintage milk bottles with straws. A great place to find this stuff is www.dotcomgiftshop. com I am struggling to decide whether to go for a church ceremony or a civil ceremony, do you have any advice? anna: I have noticed the distinct increase in the last three years in civil ceremonies. The beauty of a civil ceremony is that you have all your guests under one roof the whole of your wedding day. you can create a really special time for guests – a drinks reception for the wedding beforehand for mingling is a nice relaxed idea – or if you have a venue for a weekend you can organise a gathering the night before. you can really personalise your actual service if it is a civil ceremony and it can be less formal. ceremonies can range from between 15 and 30 minutes and most venues have a specific licensed area – or a range of rooms which are suitable for different sizes of wedding and number of guests. I am looking for a suitable venue for a small, intimate winter wedding. What do you suggest? anna you need to look for an exclusive-hire venue, that you can personalise to suit your taste. If it’s in the winter months look for a large private house with open

fires - this makes all the difference and really adds to the ambience. you can create different moods during your stay - like vintage afternoon tea or a cocktail party. Try to select a venue that has its own in-house wedding planner to add intimacy and lets you relax and enjoy.

Six wAyS to A gooD photo • Stand at a slight angle, not straight on. Tilt your chin down and look up. • hold your flowers with one hand rather than clasping both hands around a bouquet. • Move it - hold hands and walk – you’ll relax, hair moves, the dress flows and it all gets real. • Enjoy! Giggling flower girls and pageboys chasing the bride make for a spontaneous picture. • pap it! Unguarded photographs among the guests capture the best moments. • cheat - people look slimmer when photographed from an elevated point, so ask your photographer to hop up on a chair for some shots.
