ADVERTORIAL

School admission for separated parents As the summer holidays approach, many children will be waiting, excitedly or maybe anxiously, to commence a new school in September. Others, such as children moving into Year 6, choose which secondary school they wish to attend with the deadline for school admissions applications typically being early in the new academic year. Choosing which school your child attends can be the subject of argument and upset, particularly if you are divorced or separated from the other parent. Where both parents have parental responsibility (a child’s mother always has this and the father does too if he is, or was, married to the mother or if he is named on the child’s birth certificate) both parents are responsible for choosing and providing their child’s education. It is usually helpful for both parents to visit schools in advance of applying to get a feel for the school environment. This can be followed up with a meeting between the parents to discuss the pros and cons of each school. For secondary school, particularly, it can be a good idea to involve the child concerned and consider their views. A family lawyer or a mediator

can also assist to facilitate this discussion and seek to reach agreement. So what happens if the parents simply cannot agree the educational arrangements for the child? Such disputes are on the rise due to increased competition for places at the top schools, different parental views on whether to send their children to religious school or not, private versus state school and boarding versus day arrangements.

It is usually helpful for both parents to visit schools in advance of applying to get a feel for the school environment If agreement cannot be reached, one of the parents can make an application to court for a Specific Issue Order for the court to determine which school the child should attend (any order of the court will be subject to the school’s availability). In reaching its decision, the court will consider a range of factors and the best interests of the child will be the court’s paramount consideration. An application for a Specific

Issue Order may take months to resolve; it is therefore important that the parent unhappy with the school choice makes an application as soon as possible to ensure any court proceedings are concluded before the school application process deadline. Once a child has started at school, it is still possible to apply for a change of school but the court will normally consider it rarely to be in the child’s best interests to move schools midway through the academic year. If the other parent has already made plans to send a child to a school without the other parent’s consent and against their wishes, an application to court for a Prohibited Steps Order can be made to stop this happening. Courts much prefer parents to communicate with each other and seek to agree arrangements for children, both educational and otherwise. Litigation at court should normally be considered the last resort. As an alternative, parents may wish to consider arbitration, particularly in cases where timescales may be an issue. Arbitration is a form of alternative dispute resolution which provides a binding outcome for the parties. It is usually much quicker than court proceedings and more tailored to specific circumstances.

If you are concerned about your child’s schooling, it is important to take legal advice on your options as early as practical to ensure there is sufficient time to resolve the issue and to minimise the stress that lack of agreement can cause you and your child. Major Family Law has significant experience of arbitration and a team of specialist children lawyers who can provide practical and solution-focused assistance in each individual case.

GOOD STUFF

Sweet charity Doing good things in the North East, our charity round-up... VOLUNTEERS REVAMP >> The Common Room in Newcastle is leading a £7.1 million transformation of Neville Hall, a building to celebrate the region’s engineering heritage. It will provide a range of public spaces for events, workshops, lectures and training. Having taken over the Mining Institute, the team behind the redevelopment is now looking for volunteers to help the travelling exhibition, which is appearing at venues across the region. It tells the story of how engineers and innovators from the North East have changed the world. Liz Mayes, chief executive of The Common Room, said: “We’re now looking for volunteers to be the face of the exhibition and to help capture people’s stories of innovation and industry in the North East.” The Graft and Glory exhibition will appear at venues that have links to the North East’s industrial heritage including Tanfield Railway Museum in Durham and Redhills Durham Miners’ Association. There will also be other locations which have a role to play in the current and future industry of the North East. These include the Reece Group – a group of engineering businesses located in the Armstrong Works site on Scotswood Road. HALFWAY THERE >> The founder of a cancer charity, Brian Burnie, is halfway through his challenge that will see him walk over 7,000 miles around the coastlines of the UK and Ireland, raising money for Daft as a Brush Cancer Patient Care. The charity provides free transport services to and from the Freeman and RVI Hospitals for children undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment. To celebrate making it half way, Brian called into motor retailer, Charles Hurst Nissan in Belfast to thank staff in person for supporting him through his fundraising trek. The charity’s fleet of 30 vehicles have been exclusively provided by Charles Hurst parent company Lookers. Lookers agreed last year to provide Brian and his team with a support vehicle for the challenge in the form of a Nissan Navara. The car has been carrying water, emergency equipment and first aid supplies to help him on his journey. In Ireland, Brian will walk from Larne to Giants Causeway over to Derry and along the coast. The walk will then continue anti-clockwise back to Dublin by mid-September. On the challenge, Brian said: “We are now half way through our challenge and it’s going fantastically well. It will have taken a whole two years when I reach my final destination at the BALTIC art gallery, Gateshead in December 2020.” lookers.co.uk

They have all survived heart, lung, kidney, pancreas, liver, small bowel or bone marrow transplant. Lynne Holt, team manager said: “Not only are these athletes ambassadors for organ donation, but they are also representing the charity, Transplant Sport, and hope to raise more awareness here in the UK and globally, of the need for more people to consider donation, sign on to the Organ Donor Register and discuss their wishes with family and friends.” The Games will take place from 17-24 August 2019 and sports include archery, tennis, football, golf, darts, volleyball, squash, swimming and more. worldtransplantgames.org

We’re thrilled to be able to hand over this cheque for £2,600 to a fabulous charity that is dedicated to helping young people in the Tees Valley.” Rockliffe Hall hosted a number of events for the Foundation including a special afternoon tea, the High Tide Ball and a golf day. On check-out, guests were also asked if they’d like to make a voluntary £1 donation to High Tide. Lauren Bywater, General Manager of The High Tide Foundation, says: “We’re so grateful to Rockliffe Hall for its support. One of the many things we enjoyed about working with Rockliffe is the fact that it shares our values, championing Teesside.” rockliffehall.com | hightidefoundation.co.uk

LUXE LIFE

S O P H I A STOVA L L Sophia Stovall is Head of Development at Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums (TWAM) which manages nine venues across the North East. Having previously worked for Durham Cathedral, English Heritage and the Art Fund, she has over 10 years of experience working to promote cultural organisations and is a passionate advocate for the art, culture and heritage sector. She is the regional ambassador for the Institute of Fundraising’s RAISE network, trustee of November Club and Advisory Board Member of University ‘Castle’ College, Durham University. Originally from Denmark, she has taught Danish at Durham University and currently lives in Durham City with her husband Andrew. LUXE PEOPLE >> It has to be my family. It means a great deal to me to spend quality time with my family who are spread across Europe, America and Canada. LUXE PLACES >> For a weekend > It’s a luxury to have a weekend with nothing planned to enjoy my home, garden and have time to myself. Otherwise, I love nothing better than meeting with friends or exploring the region’s historic places and picturesque locations. A long holiday > Most of our holidays are spent visiting and spending time

16

with family. I try to go back to Denmark as often as possible to our summer house by the coast, where I can really recharge. My husband’s family have a lovely house in Charente-Maritime region of France (with no internet or TV) which has become part of our summer routine, fuelled by fantastic fresh food and fine wines! A treat > Is anything my husband cooks/ creates for me. He is my gastronomic genius. LUXE RELAX >> Best food > As a lover of seafood and oysters in particular, it has to be Lindisfarne Oysters. Best wine > I am a big fan of a good chardonnay from Californian producers Sierra Vista or Gold Hill Vineyard, a full bodied red from Lodi, or anything from French producer Roche Mazet. For something sparkling, you can’t go wrong with a solid Cremant de Bourgogne or British Nyetimber. Favourite restaurant > I have a few. In France, L’Scorlion. In Denmark, Rørvig Fisk. In Durham, Cellar Door and in the Toon it’s an even split between Kaltur, Panis and Broadchare. Perfect weekend > It has to be The Late Shows, which take place every May, coordinated by TWAM since 2007. The weekend is the ultimate culture crawl, which offers not only new ways to experience art and culture across Newcastle and Gateshead, but also the perfect

opportunity to get friends together to combine culture, cuisine and a few cheeky cocktails celebrated in good company. Downtime means > The opportunity to switch off, enjoy a lie-in or catch a class with friends at Gym Unique. Best telly > Netflix’s Chef’s Table or a good drama will do for me. Best book > I’m currently reading Elena Ferrante’s series, but it takes me a while to get through books when I’m working and as a result I really look forward to being on holiday as I enjoy nothing more than having time to sit in the sun or curl up on a sofa with a good book. Best sounds > We live next to Flass Vale, Durham’s nature reserve, which means birdsong and lots of it. BBC Radio 4 keeps me company as does the BBC Sounds App which I listen to on my way to work during the week or in the garden on the weekend. LUXE SHOP >> Best shopping city > Newcastle is hard to beat, followed closely by York. Favourite shop > Gavin Shelley, the jeweller in Durham. Gavin made my engagement and wedding rings and now I pop in often to tweak or commission pieces for myself but also for gifts for family and friends. I also must mention our nine museum and gallery shops which are full of unique treasures! Luxe retail treat > I am a big supporter of the Own Art scheme which enables people of all incomes to collect art. I’m regularly tempted with what the Biscuit Factory have to offer whether it is art for my wall or jewellery to wear.

LUXE PARTY >> A memorable night out > For The Late Shows 2019, we launched the festival with a special Glitter-arty party with TWAM partners, supporters and friends at The Biscuit Factory - this year’s headline sponsor. Cocktails were supplied by Hepple Gin and food by Artisan. I enjoyed bringing some of my favourite people together to celebrate a great cultural initiative. Perfect party > Any opportunity to bring people together whether it be in the sunshine with a BBQ or in the cold for my annual December Gløgg (Danish mulled wine) Gathering. Best dress > It will most likely be black or from COS, which finally arrived at Fenwick earlier this year. Dinner date > Mr Wright - my mr right! YOUR LUXE THINGS IN LIFE >> Free time - a precious commodity.

We provide our expert and steadfast knowledge alongside the highest standards in customer care and we value integrity, quality, leadership and professionalism above all else. With wedding season on the horizon, the planning of dresses, hats and shoes will be in full swing. Many people will be thinking about a gift for the happy couple too and it is good time to think about those gifts from an inheritance tax (IHT) perspective. It is possible to make tax efficient gifts on the occasion of a wedding. In this situation, the level of tax relief will vary depending on the relationship between the person who gives the gift and the recipient. Each parent, including step parents, can give up to £5,000 tax free. Grandparents can each give up to £2,500, and other relatives and friends can each give up to £1,000. There are a number of other tax efficient gifts that can be made from an inheritance tax perspective too. When making gifts of cash, the rules relating to gifts for IHT purposes must be remembered. Smaller cash gifts are covered by the Small Gifts Exemption, which allows as many gifts of under £250 (to separate individuals) to be made as you wish – they will all be exempt. All taxpayers are eligible to take advantage of an IHT gift allowance of £3,000 per tax year which will immediately fall out of their estate for IHT purposes. This is one sum of £3,000 which can be split between any number of recipients. If you wish to make gifts over and above the £3,000 annual allowance then you would need to survive the gifts by seven years for the value to fall outside of your estate and not reduce your individual tax free allowance (known as the nil rate band) which is available to your estate on your death. An additional useful ‘gift’ can be the ability to give away an unlimited amount of income. The income however must be

‘excess income’. Excess income is income that you do not spend on yourself in any way. The ability to make gifts out of excess income can be a useful method of stopping your estate from increasing in value. When making gifts of money it is important that you keep records. There is no formal place to record the gifts. It is just important that the gifts are known about and that when you pass away your executors have details of the gifts. If making regular gifts out of income it is absolutely essential that not only are detailed records kept about the gifts but additionally that you keep records of your income and outgoings in order that your executors can show that the gifts were indeed made out of excess income (and therefore not capital) and did not compromise your lifestyle. Finally a gift to a registered charity is tax free. If you are in any doubt about your ability to make financial gifts or need clarity about your tax liabilities then expert advice should always be taken. TIME TO SHINE

One to watch

Time is precious for Teri Ellington, who has brought new watch brand, Ellington Timepiece to life…

As a teenager, Teri Ellington could never have imagined setting up a luxurious and sought-after watch brand. She struggled with mental health issues at school, which led to her suffering from agoraphobia. She was terrified of leaving the house and for years was crippled by anxiety. Every single day was an ordeal for Teri, from Ingleby Barwick on Teesside. It was a therapy dog called Sheba who changed everything for Teri and gave her a glimmer of hope for the future. Her German Shepherd pup helped her overcome her fear of leaving the house. Today, the 23-year-old entrepreneur at the helm of her burgeoning business, shows no signs of her past troubles as she talks excitedly about the brand she developed and launched from scratch, Ellington Timepiece. It is a luxurious watch brand, with piece designed by Teri for men and women. The designs are simple yet striking in a

range of colours which makes them popular for people of all ages. “Taking inspiration from my Grandad’s love of watches, I began the process of designing my own bespoke, limited edition watch line”, she says. “Whenever we went shopping, he could always be found admiring the watches in the nearest jeweller’s window and it was a standard joke within the family if he went missing, that that’s where he could be found,” adds Teri. The first collection of only 300 unisex watches were called the Sheba Collection, inspired by Teri’s trusty German Shepherd therapy dog, Sheba. “I designed the watches and sourced the factory myself with no prior experience. I negotiated the prices, as well as the myriad of red tape involved with importing from China”, adds Teri. The first collection sold out and Teri’s second range of watches, called Amare, goes a step further in terms of design

to add exclusivity and glamour. The stainless-steel watches comes in three colours limited to 100 of each, making a total collection of 600. Each watch is lovingly packaged with a wax-sealed numbered authenticity certificate. “Since the launch of the timepieces, I have been in House of Fraser with them and seen sales way beyond my initial expectations”, says Teri. Ellington Timepiece is also now stocked at Hillier’s Independent Jewellers, local to Teri’s home town on Teesside.

now in Jarrow, South Tyneside, is in the final stages of securing a deal with retail clothing specialists, Master Debonair. Her products will get exposure in their stores and online and her stock will feature as an accessory to their premium men’s range. Her message to others after overcoming her own struggles is to ‘dream big’. “As a teenager unable to leave my home, I could never have imagined I would be where I am today. I hope people are inspired by my story and by Ellington Timepiece,” she adds. “It’s been a rollercoaster of a ride this last year, but it has helped my mental health issues immensely. My intention is to work with mental health charities in the future and hopefully tell my story of how I am trying to overcome my own demons. If telling my own story helps just one person, in a similar position to me, then it will all be worth it.” Teri is currently working on her third collection and wants to eventually grow the business to release a design of limited-edition accessories to include handbags and shoes. It’s safe to say things have gone from strength to strength for Teri and with the revenue from the first series of limitededition watches, Teri was able to commission samples for her second collection, which she named Amare, which means for ‘to love’ in Italian. 200 of each of the three designs have been made up and they are currently being snapped up by the loyal fan base which Teri has amassed, since the release of her first collection. “The first sales have funded the prototypes for my latest collection – it’s so exciting to see the business grow like this”, she adds. CHASING ZEN

Space to

breathe Jessica Laing catches up with Claire Lormor, founder of Sunderland’s newest yoga and wellbeing studio…

Some people say you’re more likely to find love when you’re not looking for it. And I’d say that’s pretty accurate. Whether it’s falling head over heels for someone else, a place, a type of food, or a hobby, often, the greatest love affairs begin unexpectedly - but can last a lifetime. It certainly was the case for Claire Lormor. The soon-to-be-30-year-old, who hails from Sunderland, stumbled across yoga accidentally while travelling - and hasn’t looked back since. “I was in Vietnam, teaching English as a foreign language, when this whole yoga thing began,” she recalls, with a smile. “I’ve always been into fitness, but I found it hard to do the activities I loved while over there. My sports background is in

36 luxe-magazine.co.uk

tennis and skiing, but of course, there’s no snow in Asia and the outrageous rain meant tennis was nearly always out of the question. “Then, one day, I decided to check out a local gym and discovered it offered tons of yoga classes. Because Vietnam is so close to India, where yoga originates from, there was a huge demand and love for it. And many of the teachers at the gym were Indian. “I tried it, liked it and started going a couple of times a week - mainly because there wasn’t really much else to do outside of work. I wasn't at all flexible, but I figured it would at least keep me somewhat active. It wasn’t until my travels look me to Canada that I really fell in love with it.” Claire soon moved on to Banff to get her snow fix. But just as sparks began

to fly between her and her old loves, snowboarding and skiing, yoga came along again to sweep her off her feet for good. “Turns out, Canada is really big on yoga. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that lululemon - now one of the world’s most famous yoga clothing brands - was founded in Vancouver. Who knows, but I gave it another go to see how the Canadian teachers went about it and it was a game-changer. I found myself practicing every day and soon became addicted. I did my teacher training and, well, here we are today.” Soon after returning to her native North East, Claire began teaching at The Yoga Project in Sunderland, honing her craft, falling deeper in love with the practice and helping others stretch it out and find mental stillness during her classes. Dreams of owning her own studio were never too far away, though, until early this year, when she made them a reality and opened Wellness Space Sunderland’s newest yoga studio. Moments away from the River Wear, the serene space offers a range of yoga sessions for all abilities, six days a week. For those who like to take it slow, there’s Gentle Yoga and Yin Yang, which mixes all-round vinyasa yoga with relaxing floor work. More experienced yogis, meanwhile, can have a go at Power Yoga, a mix of cardio, strength-training and yoga, classes which combine HIIT training and yoga, or Hot Yoga, in which you stretch and sweat it out in 28-degree heat. “In terms of the types of yoga I offer, I try to provide as much variety as I can around 11 different styles at the moment.

But whichever one people decide to go for, the message is always the same: go at your own pace, do what feels good to you and enjoy yourselves.” Inclusivity, I learn, is important to Claire, which is why you’ll discover a mixed bag of abilities and a laid-back, easy-going vibe in every class. “I don’t really like labels - things like ‘classes for beginners’ or ‘men’s classes’. Everyone - male or female, old or young, experienced or inexperienced - is welcome. I even offer ‘bring your own baby’ classes, so that busy parents can still fit yoga into their lives. “That said, if people do fancy something a little more private, I also offer group classes for special occasions, such as birthday parties or hen dos, one-on-one sessions and corporate classes for the region’s tight-muscled office-workers.” But it isn’t all about downward dogs and stretchy lycra here at Wellness Space. You can also indulge in massages and reiki treatments, bond with your little ones during special baby and child wellness sessions, or head along to one of Claire’s Sunday yoga brunches at Holmeside Coffee in Sunderland. “It’s the perfect way to start the day,” says Claire. “We alternate between ‘sweat’ classes, which mix typical vinyasa yoga with some strength and conditioning to get the heart pumping, and ‘relax’ classes, which are slow-paced and focus on gentle stretching. After an hour-long session, we sit down to a nutritious brunch with plenty of tea and coffee. It’s just a small, fun, way to bring Sunderland’s yoga community a bit closer together. I always look forward to them.”

CHASING ZEN

Finding Space

In terms of the types of yoga I offer, I try to provide as much variety as I can. Whichever one people decide to go for, the message is always the same: go at your own pace, do what feels good to you and enjoy yourselves Ever the ambitious twenty-something, as we head into the second half of 2019, Claire has lots of exciting plans in the pipeline for her new beloved business and Sunderland’s yoga scene - including more of her blissed-out wellness retreats. “Our wellness retreats are very special to me,” says Claire. “We set off to different locations in and around the North East - often gorgeous cottages and luxury country homes for a long weekend of yoga, healthy, home-cooked food and plenty of chill-out time. “Accommodation, food and drink, classes and equipment are all included and everyone has a blast. Some people book up with friends, some come along with a family member, others turn up by themselves. But regardless of who you come with, you leave feeling like you’ve made real connections with people and have really invested in yourself. I think of them as mini holidays for the mind, body and soul. Our next one takes place this September in Yorkshire. I can’t wait.” This summer, with the help of some of the North East’s best-loved yoga teachers, fitness instructors, nutritionists and speakers, Claire will be hosting Sunderland Wellness Festival - a whole day devoted to all things fitness and nutrition, which she hopes will bring more people to her home city and help put it on the map as a destination in the region for wellbeing. “It’s unfortunate, but I feel like Sunderland has a bit of a bad rep,” says Claire. “I’ve heard a lot of people criticise it for not being exciting, attractive or cosmopolitan enough. So often it’s overshadowed by Newcastle, which is such a celebrated city, with so much going on. “Don’t get me wrong, I love Newcastle as much as the next person. But my roots are in Sunderland and I’m really passionate about where I come from. I want more people to visit the city and to believe in it, which is why I chose to set up my business here and to host the festival here. “There are so many talented people from the world of yoga and wellness living and working in Sunderland and I hope that the event shines a light on that. “My aim is to make the yogis of Sunderland realise that they don’t have to travel further afield to be a part of something great. It’s all happening and here for the taking, right on their doorstep. “My affection for yoga just gets stronger and stronger and I hope that through my classes, retreats and events, maybe, just maybe, I can make others fall in love with it too.” wellnessspace.co.uk

I’ve recently launched a podcast called ‘Space in the City’ through my business, Space With-In. It’s all about finding meaning and connection in the midst of a fast, full and busy modern life... In it I talk to people who have found ways to bring depth and connection to their seemingly ‘normal’ lives. People who are living expansively because they know what it takes to create a fulfilling existence, without having to sack it all off and run for the hills. Our conversations are rich and exploratory and they cover many things: the importance of simple daily practices and rituals, how to stay well while travelling, the power of nature and the importance of listening to our body’s wisdom and more. Though each of these people’s stories is unique, some themes are already emerging about what it may take to live with more meaning. Because I know by the fact you’re even reading this that you, too, are someone who craves that in your life, in this issue’s column, I’m sharing some of those themes with you. Here they are:

SUNDERLAND WELLNESS FESTIVAL 2019 >> Find zen at The Bonded Warehouse, Sunderland, on 14 July. From 9am ’til 5pm, lovers of all things fitness, wellbeing and nutrition will be treated to a full day of classes and practical workshops, inspiring talks and more from an incredible line-up of professionals from the North East. Try yoga and pilates, learn about the benefits of exercise, including strength and conditioning, discover more about diet and the effects of emotions and stress on the body and enjoy motivational chats about how you can inspire positive changes in your own life. Tickets cost £30 per person and include food and refreshments on the day. For more information, or to book tickets, visit: sunderlandwellnessfestival.co.uk

• If you like to say yes, you need to learn to say no – or at least learn how to say yes in a different way! • Developing spiritual and wellness practices takes time and discipline. This doesn’t mean you have to be hard, or unnecessarily strict with yourself, but if you want these things to enable positive shifts in your life you have to show up to them again and again over time. • Inspiration for this kind of living can come from many places, so find what feels right and what fits for you. • The small, seemingly simple daily acts matter as much as the big experiences. • The things you take for granted, such as nature and our own physical bodies, can be your biggest teachers. • Reading, listening to podcasts, talking to other people and travelling helps you grow! • Taking your important practices and rituals with you when you travel helps you to stay grounded and connected to your sense of self. • Though developing a greater sense of meaning is an inner act, it only really matters when it is done in connection with the people and world around you. • When you follow your joy and do things in service of ease they will always have a deeper, more meaningful and more sustainable effect. • It’s never too late to simply begin - and from there, just keep going. I hope that these nuggets of wisdom resonate with you and perhaps stimulate your energy for creating more meaning and connection in your life. You can find the podcast in all of the usual places if you’re curious and want to listen to more. I wish you a fruitful and expansive summer! Take care for now, Laura

Summer- beauty:update ready skin Our top six must-have beauty buys for summer. Don’t jet off without them… SUMMER SCENTS >>

As we head into summer, aesthetics doctor and new Luxe columnist, Steven Land of Novellus Aesthetics, discusses light-based therapy versus laser therapy - and which method of hair removal is right for whom… Summer is one of the busiest times of year at the clinic and salon alike. The arrival of the sunshine means more skin on show and fewer layers to hide behind. This can be daunting and often our clients come to us during the warmer weather looking for ways to feel more confident in their own skin. One of the easiest ways to feel your best during the summer months is to invest in hair removal treatments. The development of new technology, such as laser and IPL (intense pulsed light) means that achieving smooth, hair-free skin is easier than ever - but it also means that there are far more options to choose from. We get asked a lot whether clients should choose IPL or laser treatment for a long-term hair removal solution - and laser is definitely our treatment of choice. IPL is a cheaper procedure in general, making it a perfect choice for salons and clinics that want to offer a cut-price alternative to their clients. However, for guaranteed results, laser is our preferred method. Not only is it suitable for more skin and hair types, results are achieved in fewer sessions and are more long-lasting. The main difference between the two is simple; laser treatments work using one specific wavelength and IPL works using multiple wavelengths. In layman’s terms, IPL is less powerful, as its energy is more diffused. Think about the difference between a small desk lamp and a laser-beam and the difference between the two treatments makes sense. At Novellus, we use the Cynosure Elite+ laser, which is considered the industry’s ‘gold standard’ for hair removal. Studies have shown it achieves 95% permanent hair removal better than any other method currently available. Combine this with our coolant fan and you are in for comfortable, more permanent hair removal in just six sessions, with long, hair-free periods between appointments. We offer laser hair removal treatments six weeks apart and prices start from just £50. Discounts on full courses are also available.

SKINCARE WITH SCIENCE Salicin Skincare is an independent beauty range, based in Hurworth. An exciting journey born from two neighbours’ love of natural skincare products, Salicin balances nature with science. The result? Soothing solutions for sensitive skin. Elysia Agnew talks to founding partner, Rosie Vero, about the new vegan-friendly range... EA: If you could describe your business in three words? RV: Exciting, advanced, girl-power! EA: Your lightbulb moment? RV: I had just moved up to Hurworth with George and I felt absolutely determined to find my own feet up here. I was speaking to Lynne (my neighbour) who mentioned that she had this new product that they'd like to take to market, but she had no idea how. That was our lightbulb moment - she has the hands-on operations experience and I have the digital/marketing experience. We work together perfectly!

40 luxe-magazine.co.uk

EA: How did the business form? RV: The product was actually created by Lynne's husband, who is a chemist. When Polytar was banned for having carcinogenic properties, a friend of his who had relied on it for years to treat his Psoriasis, was suddenly stuck without a treatment. Salicin was the alternative that took Keith four years to develop. As soon as Lynne and I got together as a team, we arranged a share certificate for both of us - she was really determined that I had something for myself. We started plotting and planning and six months later we have something that we're really proud of.

JUL/AUG19

SKIN SOOTHERS EA: What’s your ethos? RV: Lynne’s saying is 'shy girls get nowt', which always makes the southern girl in me laugh. But as a business, we're all about delivering an effective treatment for sensitive skin, in an ethical way. Our products are vegan and natural, so there's nothing nasty lurking. EA: Do you have a favourite in the range? RV: I don't suffer with sensitive skin myself, luckily. But I use the hair and body wash as well as the conditioner as I have been known to have a few stray flakes after drying my hair. I always struggled to find

shampoo and conditioners that didn't leave my hair feeling heavy before, whereas Salicin feels quite 'light'. EA: Where can we buy your products? RV: Salicin is available from our website and Mane Salon in Ingleby Barwick. EA: What’s next for Salicin? RV: Marketing, marketing, marketing! We're trying our best to get the word out about our product, because we know that it really does work. Our warehouse is my spare room at the moment, so we'd like to see how quickly we can outgrow it.

THE RANGE >> Salicin Relieve & Restore Anti-Itch Cream The brand’s signature botanical cream that instantly calms and nourishes irritated, inflamed skin. Applied as and when is needed, when skin is feeling particularly sensitive. For daily use this fragrance-free product is the perfect way to cleanse without causing irritation or stripping your body’s natural oils. 250ml £12.95 Salicin Soften & Soothe Hair Conditioner A nourishing conditioner that keeps hair soft to touch, without irritating the scalp. Great for regular use. 250ml £14.95 Salicin Essential Trio The complete collection for on-going maintenance of sensitive skin and scalps, plus an anti-itch cream for flare-ups. 250ml x3 £34.95 salicin.co.uk

LUXE LOCKS

Beachready balayage We all love looking to the world of celebrity and scrolling through our Instagram feeds to see what the latest hair trends are, but you have to admit that, sometimes, it can be information overload! Nowadays, it seems like everybody is switching up their style and colour every other month; we are definitely living in a time in which the one-size-fits-all rule no longer applies. With that in mind and given that we are loving a vast array of looks right now, we thought it was the perfect time to share with you one of our current favourite colour combos for the summer. Whether you’re the kind of woman who loves a perfectly-polished finish, or prefer to switch things up with gorgeously-loose, beachy waves, this colour works perfectly. Created by Sophie Gibson, who is based at Hooker & Young Gosforth, and showcased on our gorgeous model, Eva, it’s a new take on ‘balayage’. Unless you’ve been hiding under a r ock for the past few years, you will have definitely heard of this French term, which basically means ‘handpainted colour’. When it comes to colour choices, you’ll find that this is pretty much the same as you’d expect with any highlight service, but as you can see, the results are very different. The technique allows the colourist to apply the colour in a seamless way to create truly stunning results. On Eva’s hair, Sophie used a combination of soft, muted shades and cool blondes, which marry perfectly together. The result? The dreamiest, natural-looking blonde locks, perfect for sunny summer holidays. Michael x Michael Young and Gary Hooker run Hooker & Young, with four salons regionwide. hookerandyoung.co.uk

ON THE HOOF with Deborah Smith Summer is here and for equestrians that means, all of a sudden, too many things to do and not enough weekends!

An early summer highlight has to be Floors Castle International Horse Trials, which delivered a fabulous weekend of competition in May. Although it had been pretty wet and cold leading up to Floors, by the end of the weekend we were all reaching for our SPF 50 and downing ice-creams like they were going out of fashion! Super horses, very competitive classes and such a fabulous friendly atmosphere; this has to be one of the best in the summer sporting calendar. On the Friday, Floors hosted a qualifying round for The Burghley Young Event Horse (BYEH) competition, which is hugely popular and now in its third decade. The series final always draws huge crowds at the Burghley 5* Horse Trials event in the autumn and is described as ‘the shop window’ to view potential ‘five-star’ horses at an early age. Open to four and five-year-olds, with separate classes for each, horses are presented with the ‘type and style’ to make a world-class three-day event horse. The judges look for an athletic, loose-moving

horse with a promising jumping technique and attitude which, with correct training and production, will develop physically and mentally into a strong event horse. The class is split into three with a dressage test, show jumping and then a showing phase. The winner is the combination with the highest overall marks from four sections: dressage, jumping, conformation and quality and suitability and potential. Winning a qualifying round is hugely exciting as owner and rider write that magic word ‘Burghley’ into their diaries for the autumn. This year’s well-deserved BYEH winners and qualifiers at Floors were: Four-year-old class SHADOW BALOU MOON Owned by Ben Hobday and ridden by Sebastian Roldan-Olivera Five-year-old class THE SUN KING Owned and ridden by Jessica McKie Well done all! floorscastlehorsetrials.com

GAME ON

Driving forward The skipper is back on board, driving the North East’s summer sporting calendar forward as ambassador of the World Transplant Games 2019. Elysia Agnew checks in to talk the Toon, titles and a top-class summer of sport... He’s a superstar in the sporting world and he’s quite the legend when it comes to his hometown in Newcastle. His voice is a weekly fixture in my household - instantly recognisable with a soft Geordie twang. But it’s not just his punditry power that sets him above the rest; his goals have created a lifetime of memories for Magpies and his northern charm shines through in everything he does. He is a humble North East native and we’re honoured to sit down and chat with our number 9. School’s out for summer, Match of the Day is taking a well-earned, end-ofseason break and Alan Shearer is swapping studio days for some sun-soaked family time. But it’s not all ‘switch-off-time’ for this sporting legend. We check in for a chat before a morning on the greens at Close House, catching up ahead of the World Transplant Games 2019. For Alan, the sporting world is as much about community and opportunity as it is about skill and success. A Geordie centre forward, netting and holding the record for his number of goals in the Premier League, it’s safe to say his journey has passed through all of the above. His skills led to opportunities within his local community, which then led to Premier League and international success. So, when the opportunity to get involved in the World Transplant Games 2019 came about, for Graham Wylie - Chairman and long-term chum - Alan was the perfect fit. “I was an ambassador for the British Transplant Games in 2015 when they came to NewcastleGateshead,” says Alan. “So when Graham asked me if I’d do the same for the World Transplant Games this year, it was an easy decision to say yes.” It’s a cause close to his heart and

JUL/AUG19

something many of us will experience in some way, shape or form in our lifetime. And, of course, it’s a spectacular sporting event held here in the North East - why wouldn’t he be the face of it? “I’m privileged to be an ambassador for the World Transplant Games 2019. Sport should be for everyone. “For me, it’s about lending support to an inspiring campaign that encourages a healthier lifestyle for transplant recipients and spreading the word about the importance of signing up to the organ donor register. “I’ve been involved in the fundraising golf days in the run up to the event, plus a promotional video aimed at encouraging businesses and individuals to get involved in any way they can. “Oh and this interview of course!” I’m a big football fan - albeit a ‘smoggie’ - but it seems the beautiful game isn’t the only thing we have in common with the goal-machine. His love of the North East is up there with that of team Luxe. “For me, hosting up here in the North East is another example of how fantastic we are in this region at securing and hosting major sporting events,” he says. “The Games will bring over 2,500 participants from 63 countries and I know we’ll give them a really warm, North East welcome. “They might not understand us and our delightful accents, and there will be lots of fun with translation, but sport always overcomes that! “Visitors will also be contributing to the regional economy in terms of accommodation, restaurants and attractions. Sunderland gets in on the action too with cycling held at Hetton Lyons Country Park and swimming at the Aquatic Centre. “The media attention is also great for >>

luxe-magazine.co.uk 45

GAME ON the region and given we have participants from around the UK and the world, it’s a fantastic opportunity to showcase the very best the region has to offer.” Newcastle is very much flying the flag when it comes to the North East’s major sporting events. From the European Rugby Finals held at St James’ Park back in May, to the World Transplant Games this summer and the British Masters coming to Close House in 2020, we’re certainly taking the sporting world by storm.

so we’ll have a great year at Close House next year too! “It’s a very exciting time when it comes to sport in the North East.” All major sporting events add to the economy and our cultural diaries, but the World Transplant Games especially, is a great opportunity to raise awareness, spread the word and get people involved in organ donation. “The World Transplant Games is about a group of people who’ve been given a second chance,” says Alan.

World Transplant Games is a great opportunity to raise awareness, spread the word and get people involved in organ donation “We love our sport here and this passion is easily transferred when it comes to delivering great events. “From the stewards and volunteers, to the superb venues that we are fortunate to have in the region. And not to forget the people who work tirelessly to get these events here. Graham Wylie and his bid team got down to the last three and then beat off Germany and the USA! “And then, if that’s not enough, Graham announces that he’s also been successful in securing the British Masters in 2020,

“An incredibly altruistic gift made possible by donor families. In 2015 it was fantastic to see all ages and abilities enjoying every single second – and this year will be no different. “With only around 35% of the UK population on the organ donor register, it means that there are more than 6,500 people who need a transplant to live and three people die every day waiting for the call. “When you look at the facts, it’s a decision about what you would want for

yourself and your loved ones and if you’re prepared to receive, then you should seriously consider giving. It takes five minutes to sign up and makes a massive difference to those woeful numbers.” Alan tells me he will be following Team GB - of course. And with over 350 athletes now representing our country in the Games, we’ll be keeping a close eye on the medal chart. Can we bring home the gold? The skipper may not have had a place in Team GB in his time, but leading a team and stepping up for international duty is certainly in his DNA. He holds the title of the Premier League’s record goalscorer, he earned 63 caps for England and scored 30 goals at international level. “I left home at 15 to start my professional career at Southampton, so football is all I know,” explains Alan. But a return to Newcastle was always going to be a part of his career path. “I always wanted to play for Newcastle at some stage in my career. So to do it and wear the number 9 shirt was a dream of mine.” After retiring as a professional footballer at 35, Alan was keen to kick-start a second career in the game. He took to the dugout for the remaining eight games of the 2009 relegation season, before Chris Hughton stepped up to take charge of the quest to get

Newcastle back to the promised land for the 2009/2010 season. But it was his familiar face, that soft Geordie twang, and his football know-how that led him to becoming a familiar face for football’s Saturday night social, BBC’s Match of the Day. “It was always going to be punditry or coaching. I love what I’m doing now and have worked hard at it over the years,” says Alan. “I’m very lucky to have played the game professionally and to still be working in it is just wonderful,” he adds. A weekend trip to Salford’s Media City is now a key fixture for Alan Shearer, but when he’s not on our TV screens, he’s taking to the stands at St James’ Park or hitting the greens for a game of golf at Close House. “I don’t get to the Newcastle games as much as I’d like due to MOTD on Saturdays, but if I’m not at work and NUFC are at home, then I’ll go with my son and a couple of friends. “Otherwise, you’ll find me on the golf course at Close House. We are extremely lucky to have such facilities in our area.” So Premier League fixtures and World Transplant Games aside, what’s on the summer social calendar for our number 9? “Just a bit of golf and sunshine,” he says as he picks up his clubs for a final round of golf before jetting off for summer with the family.

Graham Wylie on The Games >> How did you get involved in the World Transplant Games? GW: I was at The Freeman Hospital a lot when my daughter was having her heart surgery and was asked to chair the British Transplant Games in 2015 when they were held in NewcastleGateshead. These games were so successful that I was asked to help with the bid for the World Transplant Games. It’s great to see the Games held in NewcastleGateshead this year. What does this mean for the city and the region as a whole? GW: It means a lot to the city and the region - we are going to welcome over 2,500 people from over 60 countries into the city for a whole week. Many of them are coming before the games start and staying after they finish - a good economic impact for the city but, hopefully, they will come back to visit as well. Also, The Freeman Hospital is known as the “Spiritual Home of Transplantation” and there will be a symposium held during the games with speakers from all over the world keeping us at the forefront of transplantation research. The North East is becoming a bit of a hotspot when it comes to major sporting events. We’ve had the European Rugby Finals, the World Transplant Games and the British Masters coming to Close House. Why do you think the North East has been in the sporting limelight so much? GW: We love our sport here and we have some great venues. The city council are keen to bring more and more events to the region and are

46 luxe-magazine.co.uk

very proactive and extremely helpful to make sure we pitch with confidence and their support, to ensure we win any bids we make. Why is it important for people to support and get involved in the World Transplant Games this year? GW: Three people die every day just in the UK waiting for a transplant. They are no use to us when we sadly pass away and can be used to give up to nine people a second chance of life and these games show that you can have a perfectly happy and healthy life even after a transplant. So these games demonstrate that you can be fit and healthy but also promote the fact that we should all sign up to the donor register and help save lives. Also, we should give all the people coming to the region this August a true friendly Geordie welcome and show why we love living here. What’s in the pipeline at the Graham Wylie foundation? GW: We are fund-raising every week and every penny goes to help, educate and inspire children in the North East. We have built a very successful music therapy centre in Jesmond and have refurbished part of the ground floor of St. Mary’s Cathedral as the “Mercy Hub” to help homeless teenagers get a better start in life. We have supported many smaller children’s charities and receive requests on an almost daily basis to help fund various projects. The trustees meet every six months to decide which projects we will support. worldtransplantgames.org

HIGH STEAKS

Ever y t hing at steak Tomahawk’s herd of tasty restaurants might be growing further afield, but the food remains as rooted in quality and locality as ever, as Jessica Laing discovers… In the North East’s steakhouse game, Tomahawk is one of the biggest and best-loved players. Known and loved for its mighty cuts of meat, specially-dried and simply-cooked for flaming-good flavour, its burgeoning collection of stylish restaurants continue to draw in the crowds. Founded by restaurateurs and pals, Howard Eggleston and Tom Sturman, the original Tomahawk restaurant, in Potto, near Stokesley, opened its doors back in 2017, followed by a second venue on Yarm high street and a third on Newcastle Quayside in 2018. Fast-forward to 2019 and another restaurant has opened its doors in rural Husthwaite in Thirsk. By the time you’re reading this, another will have popped up in the heart of Darlington and the people of Ponteland, Northumberland, will also be getting a forkful of the action. A fast-growing business, then, for sure. But if you’re someone who’s put off by foodie chains - the kind that appear to spawn restaurants like there’s no tomorrow - then I urge you to give Tomahawk a chance. These Teesside-born chums are on to a good thing. After paying each of the restaurants a

48 luxe-magazine.co.uk

Tomahawk, Yarm

visit while on my foodie travels, taking in my surroundings and happily eating my way through the menus (it’s a hard job, I know), I discover that no two Tomahawks look, or feel, the same. They have their own identities, attract different kinds of people and offer a variety of dining experiences. Yarm is the perfect choice for celebratory dinners. It’s buzzy and modern, with slick and stylish interiors, a luxurious roof garden and cocktail bar downstairs. Aptly named Hide Bar, it’s a moody snug in which talented mixologists show off their skills and local DJs fill the air with feel-good tunes. Great for big weekend gatherings, birthdays and other special occasions. Flagship Potto and newly-opened Husthwaite, meanwhile, are smaller and more relaxed - a reflection of their cosy countryside locations. In my book, two stellar spots to tuck in to Tomahawk’s mighty take on Sunday lunch; belly pork with crispy crackling, garlic and herb chicken or sirloin of beef, all served with pork and herb stuffing, beef-dripping roasties, cauliflower cheese, braised red cabbage, seasonal veg, Yorkshires and red wine gravy. Oh, and for those who have journeyed over in the name of steak (and it really is

HIGH STEAKS Tomahawk, Newcastle

No two Tomahawks look, or feel, the same. They have their own identities, attract different kinds of people and offer a variety of dining experiences worth the petrol), both offer en-suite, boutique-style accommodation. Newcastle, I find, is a bit of an allrounder. By day, it’s as chilled out as c an be - especially if you’re sat outdoors basking in the summer heat. Head here for alfresco breakfast - anything from Yorkshire-style fry-ups and fresh farmed sausage on farmhouse toast, to special ‘butcher’s lane’ hash with poached egg or pay it a visit after-dark. It’s a lively, twinkly dinner spot once the sun goes down, offering couples, friends and families cool candlelit feasts overlooking the River Tyne and the city’s iconic Tyne Bridge. The interiors are more stripped back, with a nautical nod to its waterside whereabouts - and I like it a lot. Think driftwood-style tables, ocean-inspired furnishings, exposed steelwork and industrial lighting. I have an affection for them all, but what’s good to know is that no matter where in the region you pull up a chair, one thing’s for sure: the quality of the food doesn’t fluctuate. It’s all top-notch, whether you’re feasting on sensational sirloin, terrific tomahawk or the finest, juiciest Yorkshire wagyu. The secret? It’s in the prep. “Our steaks are stored in a Himalayan salt chamber for at least 28 days, where they go through a special drying process called ionisation,” says Howard. “The salt slowly draws out the water from the meat, resulting in a deliciously-tender, non-chewy texture. We then marinate the steaks in a secret glaze and flame-grill for a unique, sweet-tasting flavour.” If you aren’t into your red meat, though, don’t fear - there’s plenty of other delicious dishes to sink your teeth into at Tomahawk. Another reason why it’s become so popular with the region’s foodies. Stand-out plates include the likes of

confit duck leg with spring onion mash, seabass fillets with Asian-style noodles and veggies, king prawns and ovenbaked queen scallops with chorizo and a posh version of Teesside’s famous chicken parmo. Each one as mouthwatering as the other, with local ingredients at the heart. “The majority of our produce comes from nearby suppliers - and we wouldn’t have it any other way,” says Tom. “Our meat suppliers, Country Valley Foods, are based in Billingham and have been with us from day one. And we source our fish and seafood from Taylor Seafood in North Shields.” “As Tomahawk grows, we intend on keeping these close relationships going and ensuring our menus celebrate the best ingredients on our doorstep. Sticking to our North East roots is incredibly important to us.” With a new takeaway - Tommy Hawks concept on the cards for Yarm High Street and more restaurants in places such as Wynyard, Durham, Gateshead and York in the pipeline, the future of this sizzling steakhouse family is looking very tasty indeed. Tom and Howard are even planning to open a Brazilian rodizio-style restaurant in Newcastle towards the end of this year. “We’ve always been ambitious - that’s not going to change,” says Howard. “We’ve become the fastest-growing restaurant group in the North within a two-year period and in that time our Newcastle site has been given the Famous for Food award at The Star Pub & Bar Awards - beating off 2,700 other restaurants and bars in the country.” “Those are two of our biggest highlights on this journey so far and we hope that Tomahawk continues to go from strength to strength as the years roll on.” tomahawk-steakhouse.co.uk

COASTAL CUISINE

SEAFRONT F L AVO U R

Jessica Laing dishes up high praise for Cullercoats’ new foodie joint…

There are many perks to living at the coast. As a long-time local, I spend the majority of my time with fresh sea air in my lungs, sand between my toes and phenomenal food in my belly. And what an exceptional existence it is. If you’re from here, or visit regularly, you’ll know that the likes of Tynemouth, Cullercoats, Whitley Bay and even North Shields, are fast-becoming some of the most exciting, up-and-coming places in the region for great grub, served up by a foodie community that just seems to keep on growing. High Tide is a mouthwatering addition. A joint venture between local husband-andwife team, Nathan and Jo Bulch, it’s only been open six months or so, but has been enjoying a wave of glowing reviews since day dot. And they keep rolling in. All for good reason, as far as I’m concerned. Not only is its creative culinary offering deliciously unique, its whereabouts also makes it an idyllic supper spot. Overlooking Cullercoats Bay, the small-but-mighty bistro is blessed with serene sea views that only get better as the sun begins to set. And the atmosphere is deliciously laid-back. Food-wise, the focus is on just-in, seasonal produce, so fresh, flavoursome and colourful, each forkful provides a party for your senses. And a lot of it is locallysourced, too. Think quality British meat,

50 luxe-magazine.co.uk

just-caught fishy finds from the North Sea and fruit and veg from nearby farm shops - all of which are at the heart of a confident, good-sized evening menu. In place of strict starters and mains, you’ll discover a range of small and large plates, which you’re free to mix and match, depending on how big your party is, what you fancy, or how hungry you are. Small plates start from £6, while larger dishes are around the £10-£16 mark. Not bad at all, especially if you’re sharing. My dining partner and I could’ve easily ordered the whole menu (just about everything jumped out at us), yet we managed, somehow, to restrain ourselves to six plates; two small, two large and two sweet. But go with whatever your hearts, eyes and bellies desire. ‘Starters’ was a game of two halves; one vegan, one not so much. I don’t stick to a plant-based diet myself, but if I spy a vegan option on a menu, chances are I’ll go for it - in the hope that it’ll deliver in flavour and flair. Fortunately, High Tide doesn’t shy away from the animal-free options (both sweet and savoury) and this one - a small plate of miso-marinated mushrooms - was a triumph. Fat and juicy portobellos, bursting with savoury umami flavour, tossed with sweet slithers of radish and beetroot. All finished with a good drizzle of wild garlic oil, vibrant green, and a scattering of toasted hazelnuts. An intriguing marriage of textures, colours and sweet, savoury and salty flavours

that just worked - something we’d never tasted before. We were equally as pleased with the haggis Scotch egg, which arrived as big as our fist. It ticked all the boxes: a crisp, golden crumb, a bright orange, perfectly-gooey yolk and soft, tender meat. Served with chunky, tangy neeps piccalilli - obviously homemade. Great stuff. From the large plate family, I tucked in to a snow-white, crispy-skinned fillet of skrei cod, dressed in a velvety cream sauce, infused with the taste and scent of the sea, and more of that lovely wild garlic oil. Tenderstem broccoli, baby pickled onions and salty nuggets of pancetta topped the whole thing off, making it my favourite dish of the night. That said, we both gave the pork fillet a big thumbs up. Baby pink flesh that melted in the mouth, a doorstop-sized portion of crackling, greens, fluffy potatoes and silky, sweet cider jus. Desserts were the kitchen’s very own chocolate brownie (not bad) and deconstructed fruit crumble, which may, or may not, be on the menu by the time you’re reading this. Not that it matters, though. I’ve recently tried the peanut butter cheesecake (which just so happens to be vegan) and the new white chocolate parfait, with

summery raspberry sorbet, and they’re both delicious. There’s even a Mississippi mud pie (also vegan) on offer. What a time to be alive. When I say we left reluctantly, I mean it we were the the last diners out of the door. I think that says it all. Overall, brilliantly-inventive coastal cuisine, served in a twinkly, deliciously-laid back setting. Diners are promised a boatload of flavour with every bite and, although fancy-looking, every plate is served without an ounce of pretension - no foams, gels, rubble of fluff. It’s no-nonsense food and I know that means a lot to people these days. And there’s more good news - you don’t have to visit after dark to experience it. The restaurant opens its doors Friday and Saturday mornings especially for brunch (try the sourdough French toast with Chantilly cream, berries and pistachio - it’s a winner) and on Sundays for mighty roasts. You can even swing by between 5pm-6.30pm Monday to Friday, or 5pm-6pm on Saturday, for special early bird dishes. Two for a purse-friendly £15, or three for £18. What are you waiting for? A decade of divine dining In the year that Marcus Bennett and Jonathan Hall, the brains behind some of the region’s best-loved pubs and restaurants, celebrate 10 years of their first project, The Bay Horse in Hurworth, we’re looking back on a decade of fine food in the North East

From achieving a Michelin Bib within the first twelve months in business, to attracting royal family members and creating new culinary concepts for Yarm’s elite, it’s been quite a journey for the duo and their ever-growing team. The Bay Horse may be in the limelight this year, celebrating 10 years in business, but Marcus and Jonathan’s portfolio of popular drinking and dining destinations doesn’t stop there. Their group of venues in the North East never fail to bring something new and exciting to the table. Their collection of independent pubs and restaurants in and around the Tees Valley includes The Bay Horse in Hurworth, Muse and Cena in Yarm and the latest edition, The Devonport – a new gastropub in the village of Middleton One Row.

>> The Bay Horse, Hurworth Over 10 years ago, The Bay Horse in the picture-postcard village of Hurworth-on-Tees near Darlington, was born out of an idea to create an inviting space for foodies to enjoy hearty, old-fashioned pub food – with a contemporary twist. After working at various North East restaurants and travelling the world within the hospitality industry, long-time friends Marcus and Jonathan put their combined skills to the test, with the grand aspirations of opening a glorious gastropub with food and real ale at its heart. “We wanted to open a restaurant that we would enjoy ourselves,” says Marcus. “Somewhere very relaxed and inviting – but with an expertly crafted menu using some of the finest seasonal and local produce out there.” The Bay Horse has picked up many accolades over the years – and rightly so. They’ve featured in The Times’ 50 Gastropubs and in dining bibles such as the Good Food Guide and the Michelin Guide. Marcus and Jonathan are no strangers to receiving awards, and to add to that, this summer they’ve been shortlisted in the top three of the ‘Best Food Offer’ category at the Enterprise Inns Group Awards for Excellence, with the winner expected to be announced at the presentation in Liphook this July. With menus ranging from prix fixe lunches, to wine tasting dinners and Sunday roasts, as well as the option to dine in the restaurant’s two private dining rooms, there is something to suit every taste and budget at The Bay Horse, making it a great location for both special occasions and impromptu meals out. Spend summer in the beautiful beer garden, cosy up for supper by the fire or celebrate with loved ones in one of the stylish private dining rooms. thebayhorsehurworth.com

>> Muse, Yarm Muse is Yarm’s answer to continental, Parisian-style dining – a beautiful bistro in the heart of the high street, serving rustic and seasonal dishes from breakfast through to lunch and dinner. This sleek and stylish, glass-fronted café-bar, headed up by the group’s operational partner, Adrian Rummel, has been feeding the foodies of Yarm and beyond for over three years. The brasserie-style menu includes everything from eggs benedict for breakfast, to early bird steaks and a la carte favourites such as glazed salmon and soy marinated pork. It’s a bright, light and buzzy space, inviting diners in for a relaxing meal – be it morning, noon or night. Muse is the go-to spot in Yarm for easy-going, yet incredibly elegant dining. It’s a neighbourhood favourite in all respects and a hive of activity for North East foodies. museyarm.com

>> Cena, Yarm Cena was the next chapter in Marcus and Jonathan’s North East food journey – and a very welcome addition it is. Operational partner, Peter Huggins (or Pop - as locals know him), is a familiar face in Yarm, heading up this traditional trattoria that ticks all the boxes for indulgent Italian feasting in the area. Whether it’s a post shopping-trip lunch, a celebratory supper, or a place to relax and unwind with friends over a bottle of wine and a pizza, it’s a place for everyone to enjoy. A pizza oven takes centre stage in the open concept kitchen, as the trattoria team prepare the goods. Cena is a refreshingly modern twist on the traditional Italian restaurant. It oozes authenticity in everything from the décor to the menu. Relaxed, cosmopolitan eating is encouraged here; with a menu boasting a wide range of starters for tapas-style dining, as well as freshly-baked pizzas, pastas, risottos and main meals. cenayarm.com

>> The Devonport, Middleton One Row The Devonport, on the banks of the River Tees near Darlington, is the latest addition to Marcus and Jonathan’s foodie portfolio. The charm and character found in each of their other venues has been injected into this vibrant new pub-with-rooms in Middleton One Row. The pair have, once again, put their creative ideas to the test, giving the former coaching inn a relaxed new look, blending character, contemporary design and traditional British pub food. Breathing new life into a beautiful old building, their distinctive style is played out in the form of woodwork and dark moody shades, with the contrasting shine of a copper bar and bold splashes of colour in the décor. As well as ticking the boxes as a stylish new place to stay, The Devonport’s menu is a real crowd-pleaser. Hearty, good-for-the-soul dishes include fish and chips, steaks, smoked haddock gratin, seafood curry and sausage and mash. Serving comfort food with character, The Devonport is a real riverside gem. thedevonport.com

FISHY FIND

Summer salmon Start your summer soirée with a colourful salmon starter. Chadwicks Inn Maltby’s head chef, Steve Lawford, guides us through a summery fishy starter, while Lee Tolley, the restaurant’s expert sommelier, takes us on a European wine journey, with wonderful whites to match...

Cool & crisp >> Alvarinho (Vila Nova), Vinho Verde, Portugal 2017 (100% Alvarinho) 12.5% ABV

Beetroot & Fennel

This wine is from northern Portugal, about 45 minutes’ drive from Porto and an hour from the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. Winds from the Atlantic help cool the grapes in the vineyards, protecting them from the intense heat helping to create this fresh, clean wine with a salty mineral note but dominated by citrus fruits. Great wine for a summer’s day.

4 x baby beets 4 x baby golden beets 1 x fennel

Pouilly-Fumé (Domaines de Ladoucette), Loire Valley, France 2017

Method

(100% Sauvignon Blanc) 12.5% ABV

Home Cured Salmon, Beets, Horseradish Mascarpone & Fennel >> Serves 6 Salmon 500g x fresh salmon (skinned and de-boned) 2 x lemons 3 x shallots 4 x cloves garlic 1 x bunch dill 1 x bunch parsley

Place the beets in separate pans, cover with cold water, add a touch of salt and a splash of white wine vinegar. Gently simmer until cooked through, then let them cool. Peel off the skin and slice into portions. Slice the fennel very thinly. In a pan, add equal amounts of white wine vinegar, sugar and water. Add the fennel and simmer for five minutes. Cool. The fennel is now pickled.

Aromats Peppercorn Juniper berry Coriander seed Fennel seed 30g x caster sugar 40g Maldon sea salt

Horseradish Mascarpone

Method Zest the lemons, peel and slice shallots and garlic. Pick the herbs (save a little for garnish). Grind aromats in a pestle and mortar. Combine all ingredients and divide into two. Evenly rub on to each side of salmon. Place in a tray and refrigerate for approximately three days. After three days, wash under cold water and dry. It is now ready to slice.

250g x mascarpone 4 x tbsp horseradish sauce

Method In a bowl, combine mascarpone and horseradish. Pass through a fine sieve. To serve… Arrange all ingredients on a plate (as artistically as possible), garnish with fresh herbs and enjoy!

Since the 18th Century the Comtes Lafond family have been making wine in the Loire Valley. Continuing the legacy, and still creating world famous wines, is great grandson, Baron Patrick Ladoucette. This wine has flavours of apple and lime with a classic flint note as you would expect from the region. A fantastic example of wine from the Pouilly Region.

Condrieu (Domaine Louis Clerc), Rhône, France 2016 (100% Viognier) 13.5% ABV

This wine is from the Northern Rhône. Under the AOC (Appellation d’Origine Côntrolée), the only white grape permitted in this area is Viognier, in the same way as Chardonnay is to Chablis or Sauvignon Blanc is to Sancerre or Pouilly-Fumé. The wine has floral notes with flavours of apple and apricots with an almost olive oil smoothness to finish. An overlooked region that offers amazing wines and soon to be the next big thing.

OUTSIDE INSPIRATION

Savouring the seasons WITH KAREN PHILLIPS well-grown with roots that just fill the pot and have flowers just starting to appear. 4. Mound the soil into a dome shape and then pack the plants in. The soil will settle on watering, often creating a well if the soil is not domed before planting. Using a decent trowel, my favourites are made by De Wit and come with a lifelong guarantee (I loved them so much we now import them!), plant densely for maximum display and consider the plant textures and different foliage in order to create a tapestry of interest. Water thoroughly once planted, then adhere to the guidelines below. 5. Water little and often. Advice has changed recently – in the past you were told to drench the pots most days, but all that happens is the nutrients get washed out of the pot very quickly so try not to water so much that it runs out the pot like a tsunami. Beware of dry, windy days. You may even have to water at midday to stop the plants desiccating before evening, but try not to get the water on to the leaves otherwise scorching may occur from water droplets acting like the sun through a magnifying glass and burning the plant tissue. 6. Feed after 6 weeks. The plant food granules sprinkled in the compost will have been used up by now, so a weekly feed, with ‘Miracle-Gro’ for example, or feeding with a very dilute solution in every watering, will keep the plants in tip-top shape and your display looking

Time for a serious riot of colour as we head into summer and spend more time in the garden than in the kitchen. Relax with the barbecue or pizza oven lit, cold drink in hand and bask in the glory of an English summer. Or maybe shiver under a blanket and quietly get ‘smoked’ by the fire pit!

The planting at Linnels Farm gets less formal and more naturalistic, so the courtyard garden, round the Old Dairy, is the place to play with some serious colour for summer. Hopefully you planted your summer containers back in May and are looking at them proudly as they flourish and flower to their heart’s content. Or, maybe they haven’t quite turned out as you’d expected. If so, don’t worry. Here’s the bluffer’s guide to great pots and containers all summer long: 1. Dispose of any tulip bulbs/spring bedding that has finished flowering. I’m always asked if it’s worth keeping your tulip bulbs from one year to the next and the answer depends on how much time and rodent control you have. Small tulip bulbs will not flower – they only produce green leaves the following year - and all bulbs are at risk of becoming mouse fodder when stored in the lovely dry, warm, ‘complimentary buffet’ area of the shed. So, once flowering has finished, I simply grab all the tulip stems (compost included) and dump everything in a corner of the garden that could do with some colour and hey

56 luxe-magazine.co.uk

presto! Next year, about 1/3 of the tulips will re-flower and you’ll have the start of a new flower border. 2. Fill the container with new compost – or even with garden soil topped off with 5cm of new compost. Sprinkle water aid granules and plant food granules into the compost half-way up the pot. Do not sprinkle the water aid granules near the surface since they are the same as the filling in nappies - they swell up on contact with water like frogspawn. 3. Use good quality bedding plants. Sometimes, some savings aren’t quite what they seem. Cheap bedding plants from supermarkets and DIY store are generally not looked after once delivered to the store, so unless you have fortuitously shopped on delivery day they may well be pot-bound or may not have formed decent sized plants, in which case you’ll need a frost-free greenhouse in which to grow the plants on. Beware of planting any that do not have a flower already formed on the plant – if you plant very little plants in lots of compost they will grow roots to fill the allotted area rather than flowering immediately. And once plants flower, they cannot revert back to non-flowering. My bedding plants come from Hollybush Nursery, near Slaley, Hexham. They are

LIFE’S A BEACH

Marina moments

Paradise awaits as Portugal continues to deliver the goods as an ever-evolving European escape. In a world where medieval history meets fine wine and glorious greenery, the Algarve is revelling in a renaissance of culture, cuisine and coastlines, says Elysia Agnew...

A sky-high spa, fine dining opportunities and a picture-postcard pool area all add to the beauty at Anantara’s Vilamoura resort. For me, the Algarve is a home from home. A longstanding family holiday destination. A place where you get that sense of escape, but you know what exactly you’re getting. Beautiful golden beaches, the cool blue Atlantic Ocean and quaint fishing villages lining the coastline. It’s a place where you can ride the waves, make footprints in the sand, get out on award-winning golf courses and feast on some of the finest Portuguese food. On this visit, I venture away from the sweet little fishing villages of Salema and Burgau, checking in for a stylish and sophisticated stay in Vilamoura – the home to milliondollar yachts and chic bars and restaurants that line the marina. It’s a very up-market place to be, but in all its contemporary class, there’s no compromise on culture – particularly when it comes to the foodie scene. Search for the best restaurants in Vilamoura and EMO Restaurant will feature high up in the rankings. A wonderful wine-focused

fine dining restaurant sitting at a height atop the Anantara resort, our home for a long weekend. Anantara whisks you away to another world. A world where the woes and worries of everyday drift away, allowing you to remain present in the moment. As soon as we step through those doors, greeted with a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice – a welcome treat from the heat outside – and some tasty local appetisers, I feel the need to switch off my emails and really take the time to make the most of where I am and what I want to get out of my stay. This mini vacay is about experiencing authentic Portugal – getting a real taste of the Algarve – but in one of the most luxurious areas along the coat. Our Anantara journey starts with a bottle of blush by the pool. Swaying palm trees line the turquoise waters, whilst couples and families lap up the mid-afternoon sun and pool butlers serve up the good stuff. This place is a real retreat, nestled within the glorious greens of Anantara’s golf course, just moments from the bustling, metropolitan marina. Feeling sun-kissed and ready for a cocktail or two, we retreat to our suite with Aperol in hand, to prepare for a wine-fuelled feast

in EMO Restaurant – the hotel’s on-site fine dining spot. EMO was shortlisted for the Wine Spectator Restaurant Awards 2018, and we can see why! The first of its kind in the Algarve, the restaurant boasts breathtaking views of Vilamoura, reaching out towards the marina, and celebrates a 350-bottle strong wine cellar. All with traditional Portuguese charm at heart, each bottle has a story and it’s our job, as diners, to uncover the tales. Our sommelier guides us through the wine journey – perfectly pairing each dish with a local wine. In our three-hour sitting, we journey from Lisbon to Porto and back down to the Algarve – with some spectacular sipping stop offs at some of the wonderful rural vineyards of in-land Portugal. This wine-centric restaurant, led by Bruno Viegas and David Luísa, celebrates traditional Portuguese dishes, with a twist. We kick things off with Ovo de Tomatada – low temperature egg, tomato stew, potatoes and chives roulette; whilst our dinner date opts for the Caldo Verde – caldo verde cream, roasted corn bread, garlic and black pork chorizo powder. The main course takes us on a land and sea food journey. The seafood option being Octopus a Lagareiro – octopus with

coriander, sweet potato dumpling with sautéed tomato and greens - and the poultry choice of Galo com Grão – rooster in popcorn crust, chickpeas, spinach and confit baby onions. All flavours flourish from one bite to the next, particularly when washed down with authentic Portuguese wines. Our wine flight comes to a close with a sweet dessert wine, served alongside our desserts of Dolce da Casa – biscuit sponge cake and coffee, and Pear Tart – with vanilla ice cream. Perfection. The following morning, breakfast is served in the Victoria Restaurant and is everything you could possibly wish for when it comes to morning munching. It’s a far cry from the stereotypical breakfast buffet. There’s a table dedicated to freshly baked pastries the pastéis de nata (Portuguese custard tart) being a clear winner, of course. When in Portugal and all. Enjoyed out on the restaurant’s terrace as the late-morning sun beats down, the breakfast experience is made complete with a glass of champagne. Living luxe. When it comes to exploring the region and the local area, the Anantara team is on hand to help you. A marina mooch can be organised by the

LIFE’S A BEACH concierge, who will arrange for the 10-minute shuttle bus to whip you to and from the Tivoli Marina reception. Vilamoura’s marina is a supper meeting, celebrity spotting, glass-clinking haven, where a bottle of wine can be enjoyed on the terraces as you watch the yachts pulling in for the evening. If culture is your thing, don’t miss out on a trip to the ruins. Modern and highly developed, Vilamoura is often considered a playground for the rich and famous - a luxurious haven of designer shops, high-end restaurants, beach clubs, top class golf courses and swanky hotels. But you don’t have to venture far in order to discover a bit of the legacy left by the Roman Empire. Get a taste of Vilamoura’s past life at the museum of Cerro de Vila – a great opportunity to see beyond Vilamoura’s urbanised fishing village and marina. For those partial to a party or two, the Anantara team will be delighted to help you arrange a visit to Purobeach – an oasis of happiness by the sea. Hit the road in Anantara’s bright yellow tuk tuk and be whisked away to a world where pool meets beach. Sink your toes in the sand and enjoy Sunday brunch in style. Cocktails are flowing as we bask on a beachfront cabana as the fresh sea breeze cuts through the striking sunshine. A DJ plays the daily soundtrack as good-for-thesoul food is served against the beautiful Purobeach backdrop. Inspired by the beach clubs of Melbourne, Miami and Marrakesh, chef André Basto’s creative flavours flourish in this fresh, futuristic environment. The menu offers a fusion of Mediterranean flavours – using local ingredients to stimulate the senses. When the sun goes down and golden hour hits, the sand becomes the dancefloor and the rhythm takes over as day turns to night.

Time to let the good times roll… Anantara’s seafood haven, Ria Restaurant, is our dinner destination of choice for night two. A tribute to Ria Formosa, one of the wonders of the Algarve - particularly when it comes to the seafood scene - this on-site spot serves up fresh fish and seafood. Inside, the laid-back, rustic style reflects a traditional Marisqueria bistro, commonly found along the Ria lagoon. Our feast starts with oysters and monkfish, before we tuck in to a flavour-packed fish stew with a local twist. All washed down with a crisp white wine. Delicious. Ria is a relaxed concept, where foodies can enjoy the catch of the day. You can pre-order your fish poolside in the afternoon, or you can watch live chef shows as they cook up the dish of the day. It’s cool, it’s contemporary and it’s refreshing in every way. The ‘Dining by Design’ concept is another unique foodie option worth mentioning – where guests can indulge in a bespoke private dinner complete with a personal butler and chef. Dinners can be hosted on balconies, on the spa terrace, in the gardens – wherever you wish, whatever the occasion. Spice Spoons cooking classes are also worth checking out if you’re a big foodie. You’ll explore the nearby Loulé market before returning to the hotel to craft your own menu from a collection of age-old recipes. When it comes to interiors and the overall design of the hotel, there is very much a classic and contemporary theme running through, but with plenty of nods to local culture – really giving the resort a sense of place in the Algarve. From local bedside goodies and spectacular views of the golf course, marina and beyond; to the lobby feature walls made entirely from cork – one of Portugal’s

biggest and most important exports, you’ll find history, heritage and Portuguese pride in every nook and cranny. The bedrooms themselves are a beautiful base to relax, retreat and revel in refined luxury. Each with their own private balcony to tempt alfresco evenings, enjoying fairway, pool or garden views. Don’t forget to rise to the rooftop spa, where you’ll be pampered in pristine surroundings – complete with panoramic views of the golf, marina and coastline. There’s an exotic Thai touch to the spa surroundings and treatments, inspired by the origins of Anantara’s hotel group (Minor Hotels). Anantara’s signature massage is an absolute must – great for a bit of post-flight pampering. The treatment guides spa-goers on a glorious journey from work life to a state of complete wellness, and before you

know it, you’ll be in full ‘holiday-mode’, ready to give your body the break it deserves. Therapists work with oils, movements and circulation to achieve a deep relaxation whilst resorting the mind, body and soul. The Anantara journey is a catch-all for those looking to capture culture, cuisine and coastline gems in the Algarve. Whether you’re here for a golf break, a minimoon, a family getaway or to explore a bit of what Portugal has to offer, this radiant resort set in a serene spot close to the buzz of Vilamoura’s marina, is the perfect place to be. “Anantara is just one more chapter in a lifetime of travel and exploration.” Switch off, settle in and seize the day at Anantara, Vilamoura. anantara.com/en/vilamoura-algarve

HIP HOTEL

La kes id e lov e lin ess Jessica Laing checks in to The Wordsworth Hotel & Spa, a charming boutique hotel in the heart of the Lake District, made for green-fingered spa-goers, historians and gingerbread-lovers… Location You’ll find this sweeter-than-sweet hotel nestled in the lush, mountainous valley of Grasmere. It’s a truly serene and picturesque setting; a stay during the warmer months here means you’re surrounded by the shimmering waters of Grasmere, gorgeous grounds, fields of golden daffodils and tons of stillness. Oh, and if you’re wondering about the name, it’s inspired by the great romantic poet, William Wordsworth, who used to reside in Grasmere back in the 1700s.

Style It’s definitely not the most modern, but that’s to be expected in the Lakes. From the outside, it’s as charming as can be; built with classic Lake District stone and surrounded by lush, green gardens. Inside, it’s typical country house-style. Nothing to ride home about and not at all modern, but very clean and comfortable, with a peaceful home-from-home vibe that travels throughout. And sometimes that’s exactly what you’re after.

Hotel highlights It’s a small hotel, so don’t expect all the bells and whistles, but there’s enough to keep easygoing guests happy. If you love your food, or you’re a spa-goer, you’ll be delighted. We enjoyed pre-dinner dips in

the large indoor swimming pool and plenty of chill-out time in the sauna and jacuzzi, as well as massages and facials before check-out - meaning we left feeling restored, with baby-soft skin. One of our favourite moments during our stay involved nabbing a sun lounger in the large garden (the pool leads out on to this oasis of tranquility, so you can’t miss it) and basking in the sunshine. The surrounding mountain views are really something and it’s so quiet, you can hear a pin drop.

Lay your head The hotel is home to 38 bedrooms and suites - all equipped with everything you need for a peaceful nights’ rest. And they’re a lot more modern than you’d think. Think Egyptian cotton bedlinen, flatscreen televisions, well-behaved Wi-Fi and glossy, well-kept bathrooms. Ours was a courtyard bedroom - perfect for a short escape - but there are more classic rooms to choose from, along with spacious ‘view’ bedrooms, overlooking the pretty village of Grasmere, the mountains and the hotel gardens, and luxurious suites for extra-special stays.

We enjoyed an evening meal in the Signature Restaurant as part of our stay; a colourful feast of Asian-style shiitake broth, walnut-crusted brie with apple pickle and celery jelly, tender trout with crab arranchini and pak choi and slow-braised beef brisket. For dessert, you have to try the chocolate and orange pave and the bourbon vanilla panna cotta. So good, we talked about both dishes for weeks. Oh, and if you can, ask for a table nearest the windows, so you can watch the sun set behind the mountains. Truly wonderful.

globe, and it’s just as sweet as you’d imagine. Take a little tour and discover why their stuff is so legendary. For a bit of a culture, you can’t beat Dove Cottage and Rydal Mount - two gorgeous chocolate box-style cottages, where William Wordsworth and his family used to live. Don’t leave without having cream tea (proper homemade stuff ) in the quaint tearooms just outside of Rydal. For families, there’s Hill Top - Beatrix Potter’s 17th century farmhouse, which is now owned by the National Trust. A real time capsule of the writer’s life and the inspiration behind her much-loved tales.

TUSCAN TREATS

REST & RELAX

Hip hotels with Debrah Dhugga Now who doesn’t love Italy?

I recently visited this gorgeous, elegant five-star thermal spa resort in San Giuliano Terme, Tuscany. After a very easy flight from London, and a short car journey, I had arrived for my weekend visit, and was warmly welcomed at the former residence of the 18th-century Grand Duke of Tuscany, which offers itself as a luxurious retreat for spa lovers seeking pure indulgence - and that is exactly what I found. ROOMS >> Not only is this beautiful and historic property a luxury escape for spa lovers, but art fanatics are in for a treat too. The hotel still maintains its 18th century façade, featuring frescoed hallways and Tuscan terracotta and marbled floors that evoke a time when the VIPs of yesteryear stayed at the property, including King George IV and Mary Shelley. The historic Lorena Villa contains 61 elegantly spacious rooms and suites with large, beautifully draped windows, meaning I could wake up and enjoy the gorgeous views of the undulating Tuscan hills. SPA >> Set between healing hot springs to the east and the baths of Mount San Giuliano to the west, it was easy to see why Bagni di Pisa is the proud holder of a collection of prestigious spa awards. Despite being reluctant to tear myself away from my

glorious king-size bed, I intended to start my day as I meant to go on, pursuing a journey of complete rejuvenation, starting at the thermal pools, followed by a visit to the ethereal natural thermal cave. To access the cave, one walks through a small rock-formed tunnel, which dates back to the 18th century. I was informed by my spa therapist that the cave’s thermal waters have been relied on for their natural healing properties since the Roman era. The humidity from a small internal waterfall, I was told, helps to regulate blood pressure and reduce inflammation. After my thermal mud treatment, which used a combination of natural clays and thermal water, and invigorating massage, I was more than ready to discover what this charming little pocket of ancient wonder had to offer. ACTIVITIES & EXCURSIONS >> Although there was not enough time to embark on the hotel’s ten-day Tuscan route offering, across Italian Hospitality Collection’s two further properties, Grotta Giusti and Fonteverde, I was still able to gain a fascinating insight into the area’s culture and traditions. The nearby city of Lucca - a short 20-minute drive away - with its many beautiful old churches and its walls steeped with history, offered just that. The easy 25-minute drive to nearby village, Vicopisano further satisfied both my cultural and physical appetite; renowned for its olive oil, I embarked on a gastronomic tour,

visiting the quaint local church and passing through the olive estate, before sampling the delicious product for myself with an olive-oil tasting session. WINE & DINE >> At the Dei Lorena restaurant, I was truly spoilt by Chef, Umberto Toscano’s culinary delights. His mouth-watering menu combined healthy and nutritious ingredients with a hint of Tuscan tradition. There is also a vegetarian and special low-calorie menu, catering to all palates. Yet, the pièce de résistance was being able to ogle at the beautiful Pisan hills at the hotel’s Byron Court Terrace. Its beautiful courtyard setting meant I could sip my delicious cocktail in the warm breeze whilst being soothed by the sweet sounds of the piano in the background, preparing me for another inevitable night of serene slumber.

THE RECLAIMED REVOLUTION

The future of furniture is green! Discover ways to make your home eco-friendly this summer with Barker and Stonehouse’s sustainable furniture range… As the consequences of global warming and climate change become ever more prominent in the public consciousness, there is a growing trend for living more sustainably. One of the simplest ways to reduce your environmental impact lies close to home. When it comes to furniture, making eco-friendly choices can make a big difference to your interior and the planet. Barker and Stonehouse is leading the way in furniture that looks good and does good. Its New Frontier Bed Frame, from £1,059

62 luxe-magazine.co.uk

reclaimed range is one of the UK’s largest. In fact, over a fifth of their bedroom and dining room furniture ranges are crafted from reclaimed and recycled materials. Reclaimed furniture is an effective way to re-use unwanted resources, transforming them from waste products, such as old doors and scrap metal drums, into something beautiful and useful. From dining tables to bed frames, almost anything can be made from reclaimed raw materials. As well as giving new life to unwanted items that would have otherwise ended up in

landfill, reclaimed furniture helps to preserve the world’s natural resources; it reduces the number of trees cut down for furniture production, allowing them to grow for longer. While reclaimed furniture has eco-friendly credentials, many design-conscious shoppers are choosing it based on its looks alone. Reclaimed furniture is a great way to add individual style and character to an interior, as each piece is completely unique. The rustic appeal is versatile, too, complementing classic interiors and adding personality to contemporary homes. Reclaimed materials are salvaged from all corners of the globe and often have a story to tell. Echoes of their past are revealed through old nail holes and markings, giving reclaimed pieces an authenticity that can be hard to find in new furniture. For example, the Mary Rose sideboard by Little Tree Furniture is handmade from recycled window shutters and fishing boats from India. This wood can be up to 100 years old and still bears original colours and layers of paint. Of course, new materials are often required to keep up with furniture demand. Trees4Trees is an initiative that helps

produce wood more sustainably. Based in the forests of Indonesia, the project has changed the way timber is grown and sourced for furniture; for every tree used, two more are planted, helping to replenish the forests and offset CO2 emissions. Since 2008, Barker and Stonehouse has planted over 100,000 trees in tandem with Trees4Trees. This sustainably-sourced mango wood is used to produce bestselling ranges, including the classic New Frontier collection and a fresh favourite, the Maison dining range. Every little helps when it comes to saving the planet and small things make a big difference too. Barker and Stonehouse recently introduced a range of Weaver Green cushions and throws made entirely from recycled plastic bottles. Both super soft and stylish, they’re the perfect way to accessorise in an environmentallyfriendly way. There are many ways to make your home a little greener, but with Barker and Stonehouse’s help you can create a space that’s as stylish as it is sustainable. HOT PROPERTY

Greatlook Design Studio transforms a family kitchen and living space into something special, proving that opting for practicality doesn’t have to mean compromising on style…

THE LOWDOWN >> After years spent living in a Victorian-style home with next-to-no outdoor space, Patrick and Gillian McLaughlin and their children moved to a large family home in Cleadon, South Tyneside, in the autumn of 2016. Boasting tons of indoor space and the big back garden they’d always longed for, it seemed as though they had found the perfect place - but knew they wanted to put their own stamp on it by modernising many of the rooms. Over the last three years, the property has received quite the makeover - but it’s the open-plan kitchen, dining and living area that takes centre stage and stands out today. Dreaming of a contemporary, practical kitchen in which friends and family could congregate, socialise, eat and drink, they enlisted the help of Greatlook Design Studio earlier this year to help bring their vision to life and make the space what it is today. “We had teamed up with Greatlook while living in our previous home - they helped design our office there - so we knew what they were capable of,” says Gillian. “When the time came to move, and then

64 luxe-magazine.co.uk

to renovate, we didn’t think twice about giving them a call again. Overhauling a home can be overwhelming, but they take the stress out of the entire process - you feel like you’re in good hands.” THE TRANSFORMATION >> Fortunately, Patrick and Gillian’s kitchen and living area makeover didn’t mean knocking down walls or building new ones - the space was already on the large side. Instead, the focus was on letting more light in, showing off the jaw-dropping back garden and creating a glossy, modern kitchen that would become the heart of the home. “When we first moved in, you couldn’t even see the back garden. There were two double doors with tiny windows with metal shutters. We thought it was madness, so we took them out and added big, floor-to-ceiling glass doors and windows to show off the outdoor space and let the sun shine through. “Then, thoughts turned to the kitchen, which looked like it hadn’t been touched since the 70s. The curtains were yellow and the carpet was brown. Safe to say, we

wanted a complete change, so we brought the Greatlook team in to have a look and then started brainstorming.” The couple visited Greatlook Design Studio in Team Valley, Gateshead, where they were greeted by owner, Ian Mason, and his talented team - a passionate group of creative individuals with a wealth of experience in interior design. On a quest to make Patrick and Gillian’s interior dreams come true, together, they deliberated over inspiring mood boards, colour swatches, fabrics, fixtures and finishes. THE RESULTS >> The couple settled on a glossy, neutral style for the kitchen - and something a little more textured for the living area. “I had originally wanted white gloss for the kitchen - something really basic,” says Gillian. “But that’s when Ian stepped in and pointed out that, because it was such a large space, we needed to go a little warmer, so things didn’t feel or look clinical. “In the end, we went for warm greys with accents of minky brown and purple, which we love.” Stand-out features in the kitchen include an island, complete with a raised bar area, made with chunky wood, and plush, specially-made seats. It’s one of the family’s favourite spots to relax and enjoy. “It’s where we gather together to chat about our day,” says Gillian. “The kids will pull up a chair while I’m prepping dinner and it means we can all catch up. It’s also where friends and family congregate when we host parties.” Elsewhere, state-of-the-art fixtures stand out - things like the kitchen tap, which doubles up as a kettle, spotlight-style lighting and a mirror that runs underneath the upper kitchen cupboards, creating the illusion of even more space. Over in the living area, which the family say is their most-used and loved space in the home, you’ll discover big, soft couches, in chic grey leather, a textured coffee table and rug and striking wallpaper, which always sparks conversation.

JUL/AUG19

“Everyone can’t help but give the walls a little feel when they come round - they’re made out of stone and have a slight sparkle to them. They add a bit of texture and personality to the room and look amazing when the sun streams in,” says Patrick. “We were happy to let the team - especially our interior designer, Caroline Roshan, who looked after all the soft furnishings and aesthetics, lead the way with much of the design, but one thing that we really wanted was the wood-burner. “We had seen something similar on one of our skiing trips in Austria and we totally fell in love with the style. Ian managed to source us one and we’re over the moon with the result. Lighting it up during the winter and on Christmas morning makes the whole space feel so cosy. “We get a lot of compliments on the main living room light, too, which looks like it’s made out of silver metal chains. It’s quite glamorous, I love it, and again, it just adds a little bit more texture to the room,” says Gillian. Since completing, Patrick and Gillian have gone on to join forces with Ian and the rest of the Greatlook team to bring other spaces in their home to life through state-of-the-art design - and the pair couldn’t be happier with the service they’ve received. “Redesigning and redecorating can be really daunting, but Greatlook make the whole process so simple and fun. They didn’t overwhelm us with a million choices, either. They took the time to really understand our vision, wants and needs and did everything they could to make them a reality. We’d recommend them to anyone,” says Gillian. Greatlook Design Studio designs stunning living spaces, including kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms, that are unique to you and your way of life. From conception to completion, the talented and experienced team strive to make the most of any space, combining innovation with quality workmanship and the application of the latest trends from around the world. State-of-the-art fixtures stand out - things like the kitchen tap, which doubles up as a kettle, spotlightstyle lighting and a mirror that runs underneath the upper kitchen cupboards

A WORD FROM GREATLOOK DESIGN STUDIO >> “Patrick and Gillian were a great couple to work with and our engagement extended over several months. The best aspect of the whole house was the imposing rear garden, which had no real connection to their lifestyle requirements. With a strong brief to eradicate this separation of spaces, they were open and receptive to our recommendations, culminating in the creation of a magnificent family home. They allowed us to help them create an impressive living space which they should take great solace and pride from – a space which can be used for chilling out and catching up, or entertaining.”

FEELING NOSEY

Styling with scents

can be perfectly paired with food and wine. “Flavours and notes can be picked up through taste and smell, and food and wine can be enjoyed even more with scent when paired well,” says Jane. “For example, a full-bodied, oaky red tastes great with cedarwood, leather and fir needle. Pair with red meat and game and rich dark chocolate, and you’ve got a match made in heaven. “When it comes to white wine, a mediumbodied sauvignon blanc tastes great with mint and green leaf. Pair with Asian seafood, grilled fish and herby, green salads, followed by milk chocolate.” Taste and scent goes hand in hand. You can’t enjoy one without the other – and playing around with our senses can

create something truly special. Our scent styling masterclass takes us on a journey of blind aroma tests, cocktailsipping and candle-making, before a luxurious lunch at the Grand Hotel’s Rise Restaurant. As scents are the essence of the best memories, Jane has given herself the job of capturing emotions and creating memories through the art of scent styling. Perfect for weddings – in everything from invitations to favours, church exits to first dance, bridesmaid gifts to food and drink pairings. Jane is on hand to be part of your scent styling journey, every step of the way. Her packages include candles, diffusers, room atomisers and scented ceramics. champagneandflamingos.co.uk

Elysia Agnew switches off and settles in for a scent styling masterclass with Jane Helliwell, founder of Champagne & Flamingos... Never underestimate the power of scent. It wasn’t until I left the office for the day, turned my phone to silent and really sat back and settled in to the world of scentscaping, that I realised scents triggered so many powerful memories. To kick things off and really get our senses working, the lovely Jane Helliwell, founder of luxury scent styling brand, Champagne & Flamingos, guides us through a blind aroma test. From freshly cut grass, to mint, roses and chocolate, each fragrance sparks a special memory. For me, and I’m sure for many others, the smell of cut grass takes me back to my childhood – playing out without a care in the world. More vivid memories are brought to life with other scents; including lavender – taking me back to my grandmother’s garden, and crisp, clean linen taking me back to a beautiful holiday in the Caribbean. Jane’s scentscaping journey started back in 2016 when her fascination with how such powerful emotions and memories can be triggered by perfumes, led her to delve into her passions in creating signature scents. If something so simple like the smell of freshly-cut grass can spark so many fond memories, imagine how a signature scent – created for a special day such as a wedding – would make you feel? This was exactly Jane’s thinking, and so the beautiful brand that we now know today as Champagne & Flamingos, was born.

70 luxe-magazine.co.uk

Styling a home, a venue or an event with a scent is something so very special. It’s a reflection of your personality and can create a long-lasting impression for visitors and loved ones. We’re at The Grand Hotel in York for a scent styling masterclass with the brains behind the business. The ballroom is beautifully adorned with candles and flowers as we settle in for a workshop in the power of aromas. According to science, Jane tells us, there are eight smells that can make us feel happier: cut grass, baby powder, peppermint, citrus, sunscreen, flowers and rosemary. If you’re like me, each one of those scents will spark a memory or will take you back to a moment in your life. You might just be really attracted to citrusy smells, or the smell of sunscreen may take you back to a stress-free time. Whatever the reasoning behind these ‘make you smile scents’, it really is something; and it’s important we celebrate our senses. The power of scent can even be used as a marketing tool – and a very good one at that! Brands such as Abercrombie & Fitch, Nike and Costa, all use ‘scent olfactory marketing’ to put their brand in a prime position in the marketplace and create an enjoyable customer journey. Turning to sensory branding means all five senses are explored when creating a positive retail experience. Not only do scents spark memories and make your home smell lovely, but when it comes to weddings and events, scents

Champagne & Flamingos gives us five fabulous ways to ensure your ceremony is filled with a scent that everyone can savour... Whether your choice of venue is a quaint English church or a modern boutique hotel, scentscaping is the new thing for 2019 weddings. 1. SWEET, SWEET ROSES Choose fresh, local, in-season blooms that are known for their scent. Think lilies, freesia, gardenia, jasmine and, of course, roses. Your florist will be able to advise on what will work for your venue, colour scheme and the time of year. 2. SCENTS TO SAVOUR Champagne & Flamingos offer the perfect solution with their luxury range of signature scents, from which you can design the perfect aroma, which your guests will forever associate with your special day. You could deploy candles, diffusers and room atomisers during the ceremony

and reception, and also give each guest a candle, featuring your scent, as a favour. 3. BREEZE EASY Leave the doors and windows of your venue open for as long as possible, weather permitting. Sometimes a large number of people in a small space can make a venue stuffy – and there’s nothing a bit of fresh air can’t fix. 4. QUICK SPRITZ Make a DIY ladies loo hamper for your guests to freshen up with. Why not stock up on your favourite fragrance to encourage them to spritz and go? 5. FOOD FOR THOUGHT Consider where the ceremony will be in relation to where the wedding breakfast is being prepared. Wafts of food smells from the kitchen might be perfect a little later on, but the ceremony is not the time for smells from the kitchen.

MIGHTY MOTORS

A grand tour of Yorkshire Tom and Sophie Waters are getting in gear for another action-packed summer behind the wheel at Yorkshire Vehicle Hire. Time to hop in a Defender and discover the great British countryside. Elysia Agnew catches up with the North Yorkshire couple over coffee WHEN WE WERE GETTING MARRIED, WE BOTH WANTED SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT FROM THE AVERAGE WEDDING CAR… The vehicles have always been in Tom’s family. He and his dad have had a love for Land Rover forever. So we thought we might as well try and use the family cars in our own wedding in 2017. We used our own car, as well as Tom’s dad’s vintage Series 1, which he had restored for us it was a lovely touch. And then we found ourselves searching hard to find something similar. Unintentionally, we saw a gap in the market - and one that we were incredibly excited about! At the time, there was just one other company in Yorkshire who offered new Land Rover hire - but not the vintage vehicles - and they’re the ones that are

74

luxe-magazine.co.uk

really special to us and our customers. It was a huge passion of Tom’s, so it was really fun setting it all up, and now it’s really taking off. We’re thrilled! ONCE WE GOT YORKSHIRE VEHICLE HIRE UP AND RUNNING, OUR FIRST EVENT WAS… A local wedding in the village (Great Ayton). So that was a bit nerve-wracking, but it went ahead and they were really chuffed with it. It’s so nice to be able to work within our local community, as well as venturing out into Yorkshire and beyond. We get to see a lot of the country in this job, and we’re learning every day. THE WAY IN WHICH THE HIRE WORKS IS… The vehicles are chauffeur driven for weddings, but some people do like the

JUL/AUG19

MIGHTY MOTORS self-drive option - which is something we’ve just started offering. It’s particularly special for a wedding. It means the bride’s dad can drive his daughter to the wedding, the groom can cruise with his groomsmen or couples might want the car for after the wedding so they can drive off together - in LR style. The self-drive hire is a different avenue that we’re exploring - it’s perfect for holiday homes and things like that. The idea is that people can enjoy our vehicles for the weekend at their own leisure. It’s great for people who want to explore Yorkshire and get a real feel for the countryside. What’s better than a weekend in the Dales in a Defender? It’s quite an experience to head off into the countryside and hire an off-road Defender. It’s a great way to explore our glorious county, that’s for sure. Alongside our trusty Land Rovers and Defenders, we’ve got a vintage Bedford K Type bus, which is great for wedding parties. Bridal parties or groomsmen can hop on board and ride in style. Bespoke hampers and drinks to be enjoyed on the journey back to the reception is a lovely touch. Our wedding parties love that. LAND ROVER HAS BECOME A PART OF OUR FAMILY, AND WE’RE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR ADDITIONS TO OUR FLEET…

Tom and his dad have a bit of a thing for them, so they’re just always hunting new vehicles down. A couple of them have been bought finished - like the Twisted Defenders, but some of them we have done up ourselves. That’s where Tom’s creative side comes in! We had a couple of vehicles already and then we’ve just been collecting really cool cars along the way. We’ve just got one that we’re adding beer taps to the side of. We’re calling it OneTen On Tap. We’re going to brand it up and get some local craft ales fitted to it. The idea is that we can attend events or host groups. We can’t wait to take our first group of groomsmen in the coming months! WE LOVE LAND ROVER, BUT YORKSHIRE IS ALSO A HUGE PART OF OUR BUSINESS… We’re trying to focus on local, country venues when it comes to weddings and events - supporting local businesses as much as we can. It’s great to meet other suppliers who can help each other out. That’s what Yorkshire is all about. Our selling point - if you like - is to be able to get you there whatever the weather. We’ve got quite a lot of winter bookings actually, which is great. Winter allows passengers to really enjoy the full Defender experience.

THE FLEET >> Twisted® Defender 110: A Defender with a ‘Twist’ - this suave seven-seater steers away from the ordinary - adding a bit of adventure to your drive. Defender 110: The top player when it comes to all-terrain travel. This black beauty is the perfect solution come rain shine, or snow. Defender 90: A true icon when it comes to taking to the country roads. This Defender 90 Station Wagon in Grey Cloth will see you cruising in style. Bedford K Type - 1952: Take the whole team on a tour in the Bedford K Type a real head-turner when it comes to wedding transport. Series 1- 1950: This fully restored farmyard favourite offers the ultimate country cruising experience. A quirky exit for newlyweds. Series 1- 1958: HSV 396 or ‘Hurbert’ is a Land Rover Series 1 with serious charm. He started his life in Derbyshire in the 1950s and it’s safe to say he’s aged like a good wine! yorkshirevehiclehire.co.uk

DRIVE TIME

AT THE WHEEL with Bob Arora

Suave & sophisticated Bob hits the road in the all-new Volvo S60 My first car was a Volvo and I’ve always been impressed with the brand’s build quality. My 340’s doors would close with a solid clunk and you just felt safe in the car. It was built like a tank and, in hindsight, it actually drove like one too! At the time of writing this review, I was the first person in the North East to drive this beautiful car. So, to say I was excited would be the understatement of the year. Having driven the car’s predecessor, I couldn’t wait to jump in, and thankfully, it didn’t disappoint. The S60 faces some strong competition from the big three German rivals. Taking on the

76 luxe-magazine.co.uk

3-Series, Audi A4 and the Mercedes C Class is no mean feat at all, but Volvo have taken the bull by the horns and they’ve launched this beautiful looking car - priced from £36,750 which is slightly cheaper than its German rivals. The first thing you can’t help but notice is the chic styling. I was driving the car in the R-Design specification - this gives it a very sporty look, thanks partly to the body kit and the beautiful alloys. The Thor hammerstyle front LED lights further assist in giving the car its sporty look. The car is available in either momentum or inscription, I’d go for the R-Design which is a great mix of stylish and sporty. Volvo have decided to build the car in America, and like many manufacturers at the moment they decided to drop the diesel. At the moment, the car is available with two petrol engines, there will also be two Hybrid cars which will be a great mix of performance and economy. I drove the T4 which is the entry level 2litre engine, this 4-cylinder engine managed to do the 60mph dash in under seven seconds and its top speed is 123mph. While I had the car, it managed to average 25mpg and that was a mix of motorway and town driving. The S60 is Volvo’s seventh new car since 2014, which it has to be said, is a very big deal indeed. So much so, that the company’s SUVs have taken the market by storm. My personal favourite is the XC40. I think it

not only looks great, but it’s lovely to drive as well. As with all Volvos, the interior is beautiful, from the infotainment screen in the middle of the dash, to the slick buttons and storks, this car really screams quality. It comes as no surprise to find out that the car’s chief interior designer formerly worked at Bentley. The interior is a very classy and calming place to be, and the seats are some of the most comfortable I’ve sat in. After a long drive you get out of the car with absolutely no aches or pains at all, which is a good thing, at my age! I liked the electric speedo and rev counter, and another favourite for me was the starter switch. Instead of the usual boring button, this stylish twist switch, along with the dials and air vents, helps to make the car feel special. The vehicle I was driving also boasted Harmon Kardon speakers, parking cameras all over the place, wireless phone charging and Google and Spotify systems. As with all Volvos, the car is loaded with safety features - needless to say there are air bags all over the place. Volvo’s city safe system is brilliant - it applies the car’s brakes if it senses you are going to hit either a pedestrian, animal or a vehicle. Most crashes tend to happen at low speeds, and when the driver isn’t concentrating fully, so having the car on constant alert can only be a good thing. The autonomous driving aids are also a welcome extra. I’m still not convinced by them, I find myself trying to trick the self-steering feature into working - I know it’s juvenile, but as a critic, I’m only doing it as a public service!

The adaptive cruise control works a treat too and it makes boring motorway driving much easier and more interesting. When you set the speed, the car accelerates and decelerates according to the traffic ahead. Space in the rear is on par with its competitors. Passengers have plenty of head and leg room, however, if you are unfortunate enough to have to sit in the middle seat, you’ll be faced with a large protruding transmission tunnel, so you’ll have to have your feet at either side of it. The boot holds about as much luggage as the 3-Series. It did, however, have a ridge at the back of the boot and another downside is that the rear seats didn’t have a 60/40 split. I do, however think it can be added as an option. Having spent a few days in the car, I think if you’re looking for a stylish motor that is different to the obvious German rivals, you really can’t go wrong with this brilliant vehicle. I can only imagine the Hybrid versions will be the pick of the range, for both performance and economy. Car courtesy of Mill Volvo – Scotswood Road, Newcastle

LUXE LIKES >> Starter button, the styling, the seats, the safety features and the classy interior. LUXE DISLIKES >> Poor fuel economy, lacklustre performance and it wasn’t good on twisty roads.
