Bestselling author Grady Hendrix explores two siblings inheriting a haunted house, and their desperate attempts to get rid of the entities that remain inside. The novel includes traditional Halloween characters such as clowns to get you in the spirit for spooky madness. In the novel, Grady toes the line between supernatural and contemporary drama. He paints scenes with gore and life-sized dolls, and also features an enduring familial conflict throughout the novel. This grounds the book firmly in real life, making the reader appreciate how seemingly mundane relationship turmoil can inspire feelings of discomfort and fear. As well as being frightening, expect some surprising developments that might leave you sympathising with characters you didn’t expect to; adding heartwarming elements to the novel, making it a great autumnal read as the air gets colder.

The Haunting of Alejandra by V. Castro

This nail-biting novel follows the inner turmoil of Alejandra as a vision of a murderous, crying mother appears to her. The novel is one of emotional discovery as Alejandra spends time in therapy where she learns about her biological mother. The main message is one of bravery, which Alejandro must display to break the generational curse of the ghostly woman that has plagued her family mercilessly. The spirit wants to see the end of Alejandra, and all of the other women in her family, but the spirit will not win if Alejandro summons enough strength. Grab this novel and spur Alejandro’s fight from the comfort of your own home. She will appreciate it.

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins

It would be an injustice not to mention Hawkins’ ‘Girl on the Train’. The mystery and darkness of this novel promises to deliver the spooky feelings you crave around Halloween. It’s grounded in realism, increasing feelings of uncertainty as the reader comes to terms with the fact that this could happen to anyone. The novel follows a commuter (Rachel Watson) and her observations of a couple she so long deems ‘perfect’. That is, until one day, when Watson witnesses a strange event, everything changes and suddenly becomes very dark. After the wife is announced missing, our protagonist is forced into a state of reflection. Being a true psychological thriller, you’ll be immersed in the troubled psyche of Watson as she questions her memory of what happened that day. Expect mystery, lies, a police presence and murder.

Halloween All-nighter at Tyneside Cinema

27 OCTOBER

Prepare for a night of thrills, chills, and cinematic magic at Tyneside Cinema’s legendary Halloween All-nighter event! As the moon rises on 27 October, the historic cinema transforms into a haven for horror aficionados. From dusk ‘till dawn, immerse yourself in a spine-tingling line-up of frightful films, ranging from timeless classics to modern nightmares. With cosy seats, eerie ambience, and a camaraderie of fellow thrill-seekers, this All-nighter promises a spooky Halloween experience. Some honourable mentions include Carrie, Creepshow, and The Driller Killer. Will you make it through the night? tynesidecinema.co.uk

An undisputed classic in the horror genre, Susan Hill’s ‘The Woman in Black’ is a perfect read to prepare you for the scariness of the on-screen version. The novel is one that closely follows the theme of death from the beginning to the end. Our protagonist, Arthur Kipps, is an unsuspecting solicitor who has been hired to resolve the will of Alice Drablow. However laborious or demanding it may be to settle someone’s affairs, this was nothing compared to the blood-curdling hand Kipps was dealt in his visits to the home where he was plagued by sightings of an eerie figure dressed in black. As the novel progresses, it becomes somewhat easier to sympathise with our antagonist, no matter how horrifying she is. This becomes a psychological challenge for the reader as they see her murderous tendencies and her sadness being translated into a disturbing vengefulness. Be prepared for a tragic ending, and stay away from working alone in old, isolated English houses for a while.

The Last Word by Taylor Adams

Emma Carpenter becomes the victim of a bitter author after leaving a negative review on a horror novel, experiencing sinister events at night in her remote coastal lodging. In true metafictional fashion, the lines between reality and fiction become blurred as themes of revenge and murder begin to starkly resemble her bleak fate. This book won the Georgia Peach Book Award, Cybil’s Young Adult Fiction, and was a New York Times Bestseller, so get cosy this autumn with The Last Word and invest yourself in Carpenter’s growing paranoia.

The North East has produced many notable figures who have left a lasting impact on the world, but few have had as profound an influence on both sports and community as Sir Brendan Foster CBE. A former long-distance runner, athletics commentator, road race organiser, and founder of The Great Run Company, Foster’s journey from a young boy enamoured with the world of sports, to a visionary leader who transformed running events into powerful communal experiences, is a testament to his passion, determination, and the desire to bring people together. With 2023’s Great North Run around the corner, it’s an honour to sit down with the legend himself who helped bring this iconic event to life.

Growing up in the North East, sport was an inseparable part of Sir Brendan’s life. While football might have held sway over the local landscape, his affinity for athletics soon took centre stage. Reflecting on his formative years, Sir Brendan shares: “As a kid growing up in Hebburn, sport was everything,” he recalls. “At the time, football was king, and like most young boys on Tyneside, I grew up wanting to play centre forward for Newcastle United.” The region’s

Running the extra mile

rich sports culture immersed Foster in the world of athletics from a young age. From school teams to local clubs and even the shipyards, sports and competition were woven into the fabric of the community. Foster’s own journey into the world of athletics began with a curiosity about running. Joining the Jarrow and Hebburn Athletics Club followed by the Gateshead Harriers, he embarked on a path that would lead him to the pinnacle of international competition. It was a single moment, watching Ethiopian superstar Abebe Bikila’s historic race, that ignited Foster’s passion for running and set his dream of competing at the Olympics.

“I can vividly remember, as a 12-year-old, watching the Ethiopian superstar, Abebe Bikila in the 1960 Rome Olympics. He became the first Sub-Saharan African to win an Olympic gold medal, a feat made all the more remarkable as he took on the marathon course barefoot. From that point on I was hooked and my dream was to make it to the Olympics,” he recalls. Guided by the coaching of Stan Long, a welder by day and a lover of running, Foster’s talent blossomed.

“I was very lucky as a schoolboy to meet Stan Long. His approach to coaching was simple but profound. He used to say to us, ‘Just go out and enjoy it’,” Foster reminisces. Long’s philosophy shaped Foster’s perspective on running, instilling in him a love for the sport that transcended any external pressures. This lesson is one that became a guiding principle in both his athletic and entrepreneurial endeavours. Sir Brendan’s athletic career took him to remarkable heights. Representing his country on the international stage during an era when amateurism was the norm, Foster’s accomplishments were a testament

to his dedication and love for the sport. “All athletes in those days were amateurs, it was a very different landscape, so even though I was off competing in international competitions, I still had to come back to my day job as a teacher. Representing my country at the Olympics in Montreal 1976 was a very proud moment,” he shares. This pride was further amplified when he returned home as the sole medalist for Britain in those games. Another highlight he recalls, was his earlier gold medal win at the European Championships. Foster’s achievements resonated deeply, not only with himself but with the nation he represented. “I won a gold medal at the European Championships in Rome in 1974. When I came home, in my new role at Gateshead Council, we were launching the Gateshead Games. I marked the opening of the new Gateshead Stadium track by promising I would run a world record in the 3,000m, which luckily I did, in a time of 7.35.1, or I would never have lived it down. Breaking that record in front of a home crowd was a brilliant feeling and one I’ll never forget,” he smiles.

Transitioning from his professional athletics career, Foster faced a new chapter as he entered the world of business and event organisation. Drawing inspiration from his experiences in New Zealand, where he participated in a fun run called ‘Round the Bays,’ Foster recognised an opportunity to introduce a similar concept to the UK. The result was the birth of the iconic Great North Run in 1981.

“As I’ve mentioned, there was a very different attitude to running in those days, there was no pressure, because it wasn’t my day job, I could afford to take risks and try things out. I did it for the love of it. I think that’s the main lesson I carried into business. When we started the Great North Run, we were just a bunch of guys who loved running and wanted to get more people running. We were happy to take risks because nothing like that had been done before, so really, we had nothing to lose. If it didn’t work out, we’d do something else. Luckily it didn’t turn out that way. Honestly, that first year we had no idea how many people would sign up, but the people of the region really embraced it and in June of 1981 we had over 12,000 runners line up for the very first Great North Run,” he reflects. “Things have changed a bit since then, at the first event only about 11 percent of the field were women, now it’s pretty much an equal split. There are a few more runners on the start line too, this year there are 60,000 people signed up. In 2016 we hit an important milestone in the history of the Great North Run and that was celebrating one million finishers in our landmark event,” he continues.

The Great North Run wasn’t just a race; it was a catalyst for unity, a celebration of community, and a platform to inspire. Foster’s vision, along with the dedication of his team, turned the event into an annual diary date for the region, bringing people from all walks of life together. “The Great North Run was just the beginning,” Foster explains. The event’s success laid the foundation for a national series of events under The Great Run Company, each event celebrating the unique character and spirit of its host city.

“We’ve grown into a national series of events with over four million participants each celebrating their own journey, as well as the joy of collective participation in their own cities. Each event has its own unique character and atmosphere. I’m really proud we give so many people the opportunity to come together and celebrate everything that makes their city great in such a positive >>

way. Civic pride is a powerful thing and it brings people together. We also deliver an incredible open water swimming event in the Lake District, which has been going for more than a decade. This year we’re launching a brand-new event in the Lake District, 13 Valleys. It’s an epic ultramarathon with four challenging distances and indescribable views. We’ve dipped our toe in the world of Ultra Running with Ultra London and Ultra North but this is a new venture for us and we’re really excited to be putting together such a unique proposition in such a special location,” he explains with a smile of pride beaming across his face. For over four decades, The Great Run Company has been at the forefront of inspiring active lifestyles through the

magic of mass participation events. Bolstered by the triumphs of the Great North Run, which welcomes participants travelling from every postcode in the UK to take part, a staggering £35 million of positive economic impact is felt in the North East.

The Great Run Company’s influence has radiated across the nation with a series of events, held between May and October in six UK locations, offering participants thrilling challenges and exhilarating moments. However, the company’s impact isn’t limited to the realm of athleticismit extends to the heart of philanthropy and community. Facilitating an impressive £30 million in charity fundraising, The Great Run Company’s events become platforms for inspiring personal narratives and

the ideals of unity and wellbeing. As they continue to set the pace for mass participation events, The Great Run Company’s legacy remains an indomitable force that propels individuals and communities toward a brighter, healthier future.

Like any journey in life, we spend some time discussing the challenges and triumphs along the way: “There have been many challenges to overcome, hurdles to climb and success to celebrate. The pandemic had a huge impact on sports and events.

The 40th Great North Run had to be postponed, and even when it finally took place, it required adjustments to ensure safety. Yet, the spirit of resilience prevailed, and the event continued to symbolise the unity and determination that characterise the North East,” Sir Brendan added.

foremost.” His words resonate deeply and encapsulate a philosophy that extends beyond athletics into every aspect of lifea philosophy that fuelled his journey from a young boy dreaming of running to an enduring legacy that continues to unite communities.

Staying active remains a cornerstone of Foster’s life, demonstrating the enduring impact of his athletic roots.

“Staying active is a really important part of my life, even more so as I get older. I’ve always tried to stay fit and healthy and although I might not run as much as I used to, I walk every day. When you live in the countryside like I do, walking up and down those hills keeps you fit,” he says.

purpose-driven challenges. The company remains unwavering in its dedication to supporting charity partners, offering participants unparalleled opportunities to amplify their fundraising efforts. Beyond the finish lines and personal records, The Great Run Company crafts a tapestry of collective inspiration, determination, and shared experiences. Through every stride taken, every goal achieved, and every cause supported, the company champions

“Last year, very sadly, Queen Elizabeth II passed away just days before the event. An event of such national magnitude obviously had an impact on our planning but I’m glad we were able to go ahead. The thousands of runners taking part raised millions in charitable donations, which we believed was a fitting tribute to the Queen, who lived her life in the service of our country and its people. I’m always extremely proud of what we achieve at the Great North Run, proud of our team, of the runners and of the region. It’s a real opportunity to showcase the best of the North East to a global audience – it doesn’t get much better than that,” he adds. When it comes to paving the way for aspiring athletes, Sir Brendan isn’t short of advice. From the passion and enthusiasm expressed in our chat so far, I’m not surprised that enjoyment is at the forefront of what he has to share: “Just get out there and enjoy it, running is great fun and a very sociable sport. I have lifelong friends that I’ve made through running and that’s probably the most important thing the sport has given me. Success is great and will come if you stick in, but you have to enjoy it first and

His ongoing dedication to fitness mirrors his lifelong commitment to both physical and mental wellbeing and even in his personal life is something that spurs him on. With a sense of accomplishment, Foster reflects on one of his most poignant journeys - an epic walk along the Camino de Santiago with a close friend who was raising money for the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) hospital in Newcastle after being successfully treated for cancer 20 years previously. It’s a reflection of the man himself - someone who not only thrives on personal achievements but also cherishes the opportunity to make a positive impact on others’ lives.

As my chat with Sir Brendan Foster CBE comes to a close, I’m in awe of the inspiring tales I’ve been told. It’s evident that his legacy extends far beyond the records he set on the track or the events he orchestrated. His legacy is a testament to the power of passion, the strength of community, and the enduring impact of a single individual’s vision. In the North East and beyond, Foster’s name stands as a symbol of unity, inspiration, and the boundless possibilities that emerge when one follows their heart and embraces the journey ahead.

Is a prenuptial agreement part of your wedding planning?

Whilst nobody plans a wedding with separation in mind, it is important that parties fully consider the implications of marriage in the event of a subsequent separation. A prenuptial agreement should not be viewed as ‘unromantic’ or otherwise, rather a pragmatic means of providing clarity for couples as to the division of assets in the event of separation in future.

So, what is a prenuptial agreement?

‘‘A prenuptial agreement provides a form of protection in the event of the breakdown of marriage, and lets couples decide how their property and assets should be divided should they ever separate,’ says Jessica Inman, a family law solicitor at Tilly Bailey & Irvine. ‘It needs to be drawn up carefully and should not be rushed into.’ A prenuptial agreement needs to have been prepared and signed at least 28 days prior to the wedding date. Further, it is likely that extensive discussions between parties will need to take place prior to the preparation of the agreement as this can be a sensitive matter.

There is, however, a public misconception in England and Wales that prenups are ‘not worth the paper they are written on.’ This is an antiquated view and must be addressed. Since the Supreme Court’s landmark decision in Radmacher v Granatino, prenuptial agreements can be given significant weight in the English and Welsh courts, that such have ‘magnetic importance’, and will be legally binding provided certain conditions are met.

In deciding what is fair, the court will apply the three-stage test set out in Radmacher. This means:

Berry’s 18ct White Gold Cultured Pearl and Diamond Earrings £4,250, berrysjewellers.co.uk

• the agreement must be freely entered into without fraud, duress, misrepresentation or otherwise;

• the parties must fully understand the implications of the agreement they are entering into having had the benefit of financial disclosure. Independent legal advice should also be sought;

• the prevailing circumstances must be contemplated when assessing whether it is fair to hold the parties to their agreement.

If the court are satisfied that the above conditions have been met, the prenuptial agreement will likely be considered as legally binding. Parties should note, however, that the courts can disregard them in certain circumstances if they are felt to be unfair.

A specialist family lawyer can make sure that all legalities of a prenup are observed to avoid issues with the prenup in future.

What could the prenuptial agreement include?

It is up to you and your future spouse what terms are written into the agreement, but could include:

• what happens to the family home and any other property you may own;

• how money in your bank accounts should be divided;

• how debts should be dealt with;

• who your children will live with and any financial maintenance;

• what happens to your pets; and

• how personal belongings you bought together should be allocated.

If you need advice on drafting a prenuptial agreement or want advice on any other family law matter, please contact Tilly Bailey & Irvine’s family law team on 01740 646000 or visit tbilaw.co.uk

A second life

It never leaves your side, it carries your whole world in it, it complements your outfit and each one of them says something about you. It comes in all shapes and sizes and in exchange for the service it provides, it doesn’t ask for a lot, just some maintenance and care.

A handbag is a staple in most of our wardrobes, and over the years, it has become a necessity. This necessity is often overlooked and underappreciated, and this is where The Handbag Clinic steps in. You might have seen or heard of them before, you might have even used their services, whatever the case might be, the name speaks for itself.

Started by Charlotte and Ben Staerck in 2013, The Handbag Clinic is a revolutionary business, giving a brand-new life to luxury designer accessories. Founded a decade ago, they were the first ones to introduce a restoration process specifically tailored to luxury handbags.

Although there are no quiet days at The Handbag Clinic, the business is flourishing and running smoothly; no matter how successful it has become over the years, Charlotte does not take it for granted and remembers the days when it was all just an idea.

“Growing up, I was never sure of who I wanted to be or what I wanted to do, but one thing I did know was that I love fashion,” Charlotte starts.

“I always had an obsession with handbags and I’ve always tried to turn that obsession into a business. When I was 16, I started picking up a few jobs to help me save money for designer handbags, and this is how I purchased my first DKNY bags.

“I managed to sell them on eBay, which

helped me save up for a Mulberry bag. The only problem I discovered was the fact that I could never verify the authenticity of them. Maybe this is where a subconscious idea for The Handbag Clinic was planted,” laughs Charlotte.

Before there was The Handbag Clinic, there was, and still is, the Furniture Clinic. A business started by Charlotte’s husband Ben Staerck, focused on wood and leather repair and cleaning.

“The story of how we met is quite a fascinating one,” says Charlotte, and I’m all ears. I love a good ‘how we met’ story.

“When I was 18, I bought a bag from Bicester Village. I remember it was a leather Luella cream-colour bag,” Charlotte begins.

“After a while, the handbag had dye transfer on it, and I was looking for someone to repair it, so my friend gave me a contact number for Furniture Clinic, but I never ended up using their service.

“Then two years later, I met Ben at a bar in Newcastle. I thought it was such a strange coincidence!”

At the time, The Furniture Clinic would go out into people’s homes and fix furniture, but they would often get requests to repair handbags too. As a woman, Charlotte understood the struggle. How many of us have experienced serums and perfume leaking, powder spilling, and lipstick staining our treasured accessory?

Charlotte identified a problem and was set to provide a solution.

“Back at the Furniture Clinic, it was

technicians that worked on repairing handbags, and I was always lurking in the background,” explains Charlotte.

“I started having ideas and making suggestions to expand the business into handbag and shoe restoration.

“Then later I noticed a space in Newcastle that I thought would work for a physical shop, and it was quite large, so I started thinking about not only repairing handbags and other accessories, but also selling them,” she says.

“This was the point where I really stepped in and made a concept of what The Handbag Clinic is today, which is a business focused on buying-selling, restoring and authenticating.

“I think a business that is dealing with products that are predominantly owned by women, is best suited to be looked after by a woman,” Charlotte smiles. Their restoration process is a delicate affair. Each luxury designer bag comes with detailed craftsmanship that can’t be replicated easily. Therefore, each designer brand will require a specifically tailored restoration process. From the angles of the stitches and colour patterns to unique metalwork.

No job is too big for The Handbag Clinic, but my curiosity gets the best of me and I have to ask Charlotte about an instance where there was no hope of saving an item. “It happens sometimes that a customer brings in a designer bag and the restoration process exceeds their budget.

“Sometimes the damage to the bag is so severe, it would need to be completely reconstructed. At the end of the day, it’s up to the customer to decide whether it’s worth

SUNSHINE STATE OF MIND

A season of transformation: embracing a marathon and the journey of midlife renewal

investing back into the product.”

Opting to extend the life of a designer bag is never the wrong choice, as it aligns with The Handbag Clinic’s core mission - give a second life to as many handbags and shoes as they can.

“Sustainability is so important to us, it goes beyond prolonging the life of a handbag or shoes,” highlights Charlotte.

“When in our clinic we use cloths for cleaning, these are provided to us as a reuse of linens from the leisure industry. Our office is powered by solar panels, our care kits are made out of products that are recycled and our care bottles are made out of recycled materials.”

With sustainability at its forefront, The Handbag Clinic is a thriving business with a bright future ahead. What originally started in Newcastle, has now expanded into Qatar, France and Monaco. A move that is admired not only by me, but I imagine, by a lot of women in the business.

However, none of it is easy, and as we say our goodbyes, Charlotte mentions a busy day ahead and the 18-month-old waiting for her to get back home. She informs me that downtime is not a luxury she can always afford, but she wouldn’t have it any other way.

“It's my passion. It’s what I’ve always wanted to do.”

Teresa Peters, our Luxe Life and Executive Coach, facilitates workshops and leadership development programmes. As she embarks on the York marathon, she reflects on how the season of autumn can be the perfect opportunity to champion our emotional and physical transitions.

The autumn breeze promises change, whispering secrets of transformation that resonate deeply within me. I’m a 48-year-old based in Northumberland juggling coaching, marriage, and parenting three humans, a dog, and a cat. With the upcoming York Marathon in October, I’m deeply immersed in marathon training, embodying midlife renewal. This journey unveils embracing exercise in midlife and its link to my work with the NHS Executive team and post-hospital recovery.

Lacing up, I remember this marathon isn’t just about the race; it symbolises embracing midlife change. My charity place for Alzheimer’s UK aims to raise research funds and support my husband coping with his dad’s Alzheimer’s. Age isn’t a barrier; I’m debunking that myth with each stride. The York Marathon isn’t merely a goal; it embodies autumn’s transformative spirit - shedding limits, embracing potential.

For those contemplating their journey into exercise during midlife, the transition isn’t about perfection, it’s about progress. My journey started with small runs after my twins’ birth 15 years ago. Following surgery six years ago, I lost confidence as I faced knee and hip problems, and energy loss post-bereavements, but running provided thinking time. Joining Ashington Hirst Running Club, I found clarity in fresh air. Having spent years coaching professionals in various fields, I attest to exercise’s symbiotic relationship with career success.

Autumn’s focus and determination mirrors the mental clarity that physical activity brings. Through exercise, we cultivate resilience, foster creativity, and lay the foundation for an enriched professional journey. Yet my marathon training journey encompasses more than personal growth; it bridges health and recovery.

Within our local NHS, this link is widely recognised. Northumbria Healthcare’s active hospitals pilot shows exercise’s transformative power for post-hospital recovery. Autumn’s natural cycle of renewal parallels the healing process.

Just as nature rejuvenates, patients rekindle their connection with their bodies, fostering hope and

empowerment through movement.

Jill Harland, Northumbria Healthcare’s consultant in public health, comments:

“Evidence suggests that one in four people will increase their activity levels if advised to do so by a clinician, so it’s great to see that our staff are truly making every contact count and that our patients are enjoying getting up and moving more while they’re with us.

“We all know the benefits that being more active can bring to our physical health, but this work shows the positive impact it can have on people’s social and mental wellbeing too.”

Northumbria Trust’s active hospitals offer specialised programmes, accelerating healing through movement.

Running is promoted by the Trust to keep people healthy and happy, through their sponsorship of the Kielder marathon weekend and launching a new Parkrun event in Ashington.

As I prepare for the York Marathon’s challenges, camaraderie within the running community is invaluable. Running groups and enthusiasts form bonds that inspire, support, and uplift. Just as autumn’s leaves gather to create a vibrant mosaic, I’ve discovered a network transcending age, background, and individual goals.

The essence of autumn’s transformation saturates my marathon training journey. Each step, each milestone, echoes my own evolution.

I’m preparing for the worst, like hitting the wall at mile 22, injuring my knee, or needing the loo! I plan to conquer my mind chatter and record my kids’ voices to cheer me on through my bone conduction headphones. I plan for obstacles, knowing as leaves, branches strengthen to bloom in spring.

In autumn’s embrace, I invite you to accept the changes that life offers.

Whether your journey involves marathon training, a new exercise regime, or the path to recovery, the season’s magic surrounding nature is welcomed. Stepping into renewal’s rhythm, let winds of change guide us to a healthier, empowered self.

Reflecting on this journey, one quote resonates: “Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly.” Autumn’s metamorphosis reminds us that every ending carries promise of a beautiful beginning. Through training, exercise, and embracing change, we can spread our wings and fly like a butterfly.

Making a comeback

Made famous in the 80s by the likes of David Bowie, Duran Duran and dare

I say Pat Sharp (for those of you who would remember him) the mullet made a comeback with a lot of influential people wearing it well, but this time around with a twist. As well as loads of big-name footballers

we saw some A-List beauties like Miley Cyrus and Zendaya sporting the look, making the famous haircut just as popular with the girls this time. In terms of length, I guess it sits somewhere between a Pixie cut and the short, layered bob, but of course there are a lot of variations of the mullet. It doesn't necessarily have to be super short; you

can still rock the look with extra length at the back and heavy sweeping layers through the top to the same effect.

It’s one of those haircuts that allows you to express your individuality and personal style through your hair, and although some people may look back at the mullet and laugh (it certainly had its comedy value back in the 80s with some of the people who wore it badly) - it really can look super stylish and bang on trend for the fashionistas amongst us.

Our beautiful model ‘Rhiannon’ shows just how striking this cut can look – with the right amount of texture and movement and some gorgeous blonde thrown in for good measure, what’s not to love!

So, if you’re undecided on a new look or simply in a transition of growing a short hairstyle out - then look no further. This

could be the perfect new look to carry you into the autumn.

A youthful glow

A new range of luxurious spa treatments for ageless radiance has taken centre stage at the Clarins Spa in John Lewis. Nicole

to try out the brand-new Precious Sensorial Experience…

within this oh-so dreamy treatment is the rejuvenating scalp massage which works wonders for my recurring headaches. Finally, it’s time for the magical formulas to be applied. First up it’s the La Crème Yeux (15ml, £125) which is swept under the eyes using the enclosed spatula. Packed with skin-loving ingredients, this dreamy eye cream is highly effective in targeting lines, tired looking, dry, and slackened eyes. The rest of the face is treated to the lovely La Crème Day and Night Cream (50ml, £299).

Infused with moonlight flower which blooms only once per year, this intelligent extract enhances the production of FOXO protein which works to prevent oxidative stress from happening. The powerful moonlight flower is combined with tri peptides which help to correct ageing through replenishing and rejuvenating skin texture. It’s said that this magical duo delivers age delaying technology - music to my ears.

After 120 minutes of peace and tranquility, the treatment comes to an end. Provided with a refreshing glass of water and a mirror to admire Romana’s work, I’m amazed to see that after just one treatment, my skin is instantly plumped, smoothed, hydrated and absolutely glowing!

Clarins Spa is a tranquil haven nestled within the bustling John Lewis store in Newcastle’s city centre. Now I know what you’re thinking ‘why would I want to relax and unwind in a busy department store?’, but hear me out. While some might think (originally myself included), the noise and busy atmosphere that awaits outside of a treatment room would be a constant distraction, prohibiting you from switching off would be a ‘no,no’, I can safely say it’s anything but.

Following a busy morning, I find myself rushing into the city with anything but relaxation on my mind. But as I head through the store and make my way to the Clarins concession stand, I am greeted by a friendly member of the team who sits me down and offers me a refreshing glass of watera welcome treat after the chaotic journey I had just encountered. The lovely Romana comes to greet me, guiding me upstairs where we take a comfortable seat and begin to discuss the treatment and go through the required health and safety checks. The Precious Sensorial Experience is the ideal box-ticker for deep relaxation, perfect harmony and utmost luxury. The relaxing treatment is made up of two components, the 90-minute Precious Luxury Facial combined with benefits of an expert target back massage. The flowing energy of the massage works deeper into tension, to gently ease back muscles and encourage optimum circulation. The treatment is unlike any of Clarins’ existing treatments. The combination of Asian ancestral techniques (Japanese Kobido techniques) with Clarins Professional Expertise targets micro tension accumulated in our muscles. The skin is constantly stimulated throughout the treatments with cold tools that help to

boost skin radiance and prevent ageing. Making myself comfortable on the bed, my journey to relaxation begins with an invigorating 30 minute back massage, unlocking any tension built up within my muscles. Following this half an hour of bliss, I roll over and the magic to the face begins. Starting with a vital touch and micro tension evaluation, Romana quickly identifies that I lock my tension away within my lower cheeks and jawline. Ensuring the treatment is truly bespoke to my skin, a skin analysis is carried to make sure only the right products for my skin are used. To ensure each and every step of the facial and the products applied work as efficiently as possible, the process starts with a double cleanse to create the perfect pre-facial canvas. Next, comes exfoliation, removing any dead skin cells, making room for a silky smooth touch. The skin, at this point, has been worked hard and is rewarded with an energising lymphatic drainage massage using cold spoons. A refreshing touch which helps to reduce puffiness, helps tighten the skin and promotes a smoother complexion. Next comes a soothing facial massage which promotes even further relaxation as well as moon mist tapotment movement which is used throughout, followed by a delicate eye massage and a décolleté massage which works to slow down signs of premature ageing, improve circulation and calm puffiness - all of the sought-after skin benefits one could want from a facial. Allowing the skin-loving products used so far to absorb deep into the skin, the next stage involves a delightful hand massage which boosts the state of relaxation even further. Truly enjoying each moment of bliss, I find myself nodding off before the cryotherapy massage is carried out. This massage in particular applies pressurised

and condensed air to the face and neck area to stimulate the production of elastin and collagen, tighten pores and even skin tone. Once again, providing all of those muchneeded benefits our tired skin cries out for. The following and one of the final steps

Gathering my belongings and heading for the door, I forget my surroundings when I’m transported back into the busy city centre. The Clarins Spa is a true escape from the hustle and bustle, a little slice of heaven to find a moment of calmness amongst the chaos.

new ideas and inspiration. A special highlight of the summer was partnering with the fantastic HexClad team, who sponsored some of the events. Their top-notch equipment got other chefs just as enthusiastic as I am about the tools we use to create culinary magic. In September, I’ll be heading back to California. The first stop will be LA, where I’ll spend a few delightful days soaking up the culinary culture before heading to see my friend at Carmel Valley. And as much as I’m excited to see them, I can’t wait to get my hands on their garden which is teeming with an array of fresh produce - watermelons, cucumbers, chillies, tomatoes, lemons, limes, and oranges. I can hardly contain my excitement to cook with these locally grown treasures and explore the exceptional farmers’ markets that California has to offer. September feels like the perfect time for planning and creativity. I’m eager to delve into new TV projects and nurture some of my own culinary ideas. It’s a time of growth and exploration, and I can’t wait to see what delightful ventures lie ahead.

Ingredients

I’ve honestly had one of the most amazing summers. I had the opportunity to cook at some incredible food festivals and take part in some fantastic events. I recently spent some time in the South of France, The French Riviera and Monaco with Aston Martin at their global media launch for the new Aston Martin DB12. I spent almost three weeks out there cooking for press, influencers and celebrities from all over the world. I was there with Elliot Grover, Executive Chef at 45 Park Lane and we had a fantastic time cooking with some of the freshest produce. We were in a beautiful, rustic chateau and I remember the first day the ingredients arrived we knew it was going to be brilliant. Everything we made was simple, yet beautiful thanks to the fragrant, fresh ingredients which elevated each dish. For example we made scallops with garlic butter, a beautiful pan roasted duck with super crispy skin, potatoes, kale peas and a really light sauce. We finished with an amazing lemon posset using lemons from the local area and the flavour and fragrance that came through was exceptional. We spent some time in Monaco trying some local restaurants and again it all comes back to the high quality ingredients. It really was a fantastic experience, Aston Martin is a fantastic company, and it was a dream come true to work with them.

As I mentioned in the Jul/Aug issue, I’ve recently been collaborating with Fresh Fitness Food, and right now, I’m actually savouring one of their delicious meals while reminiscing about the summer. As a fitness enthusiast, I’m thrilled to combine my passion for food with my dedication to staying in shape. What sets Fresh Fitness Food apart is their personalised approach to recipes. When you visit their website, you can input your specific needs and goals, and based on their expertise, they calculate the ideal calorie intake for each meal to help you reach those objectives. During my time working with them, I had the pleasure of contributing to a summer menu. The process is fascinating - once an order is placed, the chefs work overnight to tailor the recipe to suit the individual’s nutritional requirements perfectly. The result? Delicious meals waiting on your doorstep, packed with high-quality, nutritious goodness, lovingly prepared by skilled chefs. Working with the team at Fresh Fitness Food has been an absolute privilege, and I’m genuinely excited about continuing our collaboration. The commitment to providing excellent, tailored meals that support personal goals is truly commendable, and I can’t wait to see what other exciting projects we’ll undertake together.

As we bid farewell to strawberries and raspberries, September brings the delightful blackberries and British apples into our kitchens. A blackberry and apple crumble, a true home comfort, perfectly complements the chillier autumn weather. During this transition period, we embrace hearty vegetables like kale, broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots, before heading into October where our dishes become a lot richer and mushrooms, for example, are perfect to add into plenty of wholesome dishes at this time of year.

Q: What’s your go-to comfort meal when the nights start getting colder and darker?

A: I don’t have a go-to as I love mixing up my meals, but one in particular I love and always go back to is cauliflower macaroni cheese – a truly delicious way to incorporate some veggies. Start by roasting cauliflower in the oven with a pinch of smoked paprika, drizzle of olive oil, salt, and pepper. For the macaroni cheese, prepare a homemade white sauce, add cheese, and cook the pasta until it’s al dente, as it’ll cook further in the oven later. Once the pasta is cooked, I like to cool it down under cold water before adding it to the cheese sauce along with the roasted cauliflower. Stir it all together and top it off with breadcrumbs. You can use leftover bread or buy some panko breadcrumbs, mixing in parsley and grated garlic for an extra touch of flavour. Then, bake it in the oven – simple, comforting, and not overly indulgent, as you can control the amount of cheese you use. Don’t forget to utilise the cauliflower stems; trim them down and roast them along with the rest for a delicious addition. This dish is cost-effective, filling, and perfect for the whole family. TOP TIP: grate any leftover cheese into a freezer bag and freeze it for next time.

4 eggs, lightly beaten

300ml milk (10 oz- 1 ¼ cup)

8 sausages

For the Bacon Jam

2 red onions, finely sliced

2 tsp sugar

2 tbsp balsamic vinegar

500ml beef stock (2 cups)

1 tbsp cornstarch

Method

Preheat the oven to 220 degrees c (425 F). Pour 4 tbsp of vegetable oil into a 30cm HexClad (12 inch). Preheat the pan in the oven for 15 minutes.

For the batter:

Sieve the flour into a large bowl, add a pinch of salt. Make a well in the centre of the flour, pour in the eggs then begin to whisk.

As it comes together gradually add the milk, whisking all the time until you have a smooth batter. Set aside to rest.

In a small frying pan over a medium heat fry the sausages for a few minutes until golden all over. When the pan in the oven has preheated, remove to the worktop. Add the sausages then pour in the batter. Return to the oven and bake for 20-25 minutes until risen and golden.

Meanwhile, to make gravy, heat 1 tbsp oil in a large saucepan over a medium heat, add the onions and sugar with a pinch of salt. Gently fry for 10 minutes until soft and golden.

Add the balsamic, cook for 1 minute then pour in the stock.

Bring to the boil, then simmer for 10 minutes. Mix the cornstarch with a splash water to form a paste, add to the gravy to thicken.

Remove the pan from the oven, serve and enjoy!

SEASONAL SIPPING

A dinner delight

Fern Dining Room is a culinary gem nestled within the breathtaking grounds of Jesmond Dene House. Nicole Wood takes a seat and tucks into a mid-week bite…

Like many, I often find myself saving my dinner plans for the weekend. But with busy weeks, jam-packed schedules and that longing for the weekend to roll around, it was time to make a change. No more only doing the fun stuff on weekends, no more wishing the week away and no more weekends with busier diaries than the week prior. With that in mind, my partner and I decided to treat ourselves to a Thursday reservation at Fern Dining Room, nestled within the exquisite Jesmond Dene House. Following a hectic work day, we sought refuge in this culinary oasis, eager to unwind and savour a luxurious dining experience. As we settled into our seats, the worry of looming deadlines and tomorrow’s meetings dissolved, replaced by an air of excitement and anticipation. To toast the beginning of this mid-week dinner date, we couldn’t resist the allure of the classic Aperol Spritz (£9.75). A delightful combination of citrusy and herbal notes, along with a subtle bitterness danced on our taste buds. A refreshing bottle of water for the table, followed by two glass bottles of Coca Cola (the best kind) also made their way to our table - it is a school night after all.

With more than enough drinks to see us through, we begin to cast our eyes upon the menu awaiting us. Made up of an exquisite symphony of contemporary and classic dishes, the menu tempts us with an array of drool-worthy choices. For starters, my heart settled on the salted cod fish cake (£14), a dish that promised to awaken my taste buds. The first bite was a revelationthe delicate fish cake, perfectly seasoned and encased in a golden salty crust, harmonised effortlessly with the confit garlic aioli. The tangy notes of lime and jalapeño pickled radish adds a burst of refreshing flavours that perfectly complement the dish.

Across the table, my partner delighted in the duck liver parfait (£16), a true masterpiece of culinary finesse. The richness of the parfait was beautifully balanced by the sweetness of sauternes and the pickled pear’s delightful tartness. The truffled brioche, buttery and infused with the earthy aroma of truffles, elevated the dish to new heights.

Judging by the smile on his face, it went down a treat.

The bright and airy ambience of the Fern Dining Room mirrored the refreshing flavours of our starters. Large windows allowed the soft glow of the setting sun to filter through, enveloping the room in

a warm embrace. Our window seat offered breathtaking views of the lush greenery outside, creating an idyllic backdrop for our culinary journey.

As the evening progressed, our anticipation grew for the main courses to grace our table, and they certainly did not disappoint. I opted for the braised feather blade of beef (£30), which arrived as a true culinary spectacle. The meat was incredibly tender and succulent, every bite was a melt-in-themouth triumph. Paired with the crisp perfection of triple cooked chips and the vibrant green allure of tenderstem broccoli, this dish was a harmonious celebration of textures and flavours.

My partner’s 10 oz salt aged rib-eye steak (£40) was a sight to behold. Cooked to perfection, each slice revealed just the right amount of marbling, ensuring a succulent and mouthwatering experience. Delightfully crisp on the outside and fluffy within, the triple cooked chips were the perfect companion. Not to mention, the garlic and thyme crumbed bone marrow, which was a crunchy palate pleaser for any meat lover. The side of watercress added a freshness to the dish, while the peppercorn sauce provided a velvety touch, tying the elements together for utmost deliciousness.

Throughout the meal, the attentive and gracious staff catered to our every whim, enhancing the already delightful experience. The seamless service allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in the relaxing surroundings and savour each moment, appreciating not only the culinary creations but also the warm hospitality of Fern Dining Room.

As the evening drew to a close, we embraced the sweet finale with utmost delight - the dulce de leche cremeux (£11), adorned with chocolate and served with milk ice cream. The cremeux, velvety and rich, danced gracefully with the chocolate, creating a symphony of sweet sensations. The milk ice cream was the standout hero in the dessert for both of us. A delicious sweet, yet light palate cleanser. Each spoonful went down a treat, making it the perfect end to a divine dinner.

The thoughtfully crafted menu, the enchanting decor, and the attentive service merges seamlessly to create a luxurious oasis in the heart of Jesmond Dene House. A place where culinary artistry thrives, and where one can escape the demands of the world, if only for a few hours.

Life on the farm

Simon and Karen Phillips update us on the latest happenings from the fabulous Linnels Farm this autumn...

The bullpen renovation is very close to completion. A one-bedroom annex to our house, somewhere for family to stay but separate to us, or as we often refer to it: the mother-in-law holding pen, but like the heroes of D-Day, I’m sure she’ll breach the defences and be perched on a bar stool in our kitchen.

You may recall we have included an air source heat pump for the hot water and underfloor heating, these are magical environmentally friendly pieces of kit, and I would recommend them for any new build or renovation. However, what may surprise you is their operating costs, for an average house the air source heat pump costs around £1,360 to run compared to £1,250 for a gas boiler. Now, if you’ve fallen off your chair, don’t panic. I am merely wishing to draw out the energy cost and just to say, be aware.

Additionally, if you are replacing a boiler with an air source heat pump you may well need to change your radiators too, existing will work, but as the water temperatures are lower than from boilers, you may need larger radiators to give you the total heat you require. For a new build, or renovation like ours, it is an easy choice, we added underfloor heating which runs at lower temperatures and is a natural partner for the heat pump. To offset the electricity cost we invested in solar panels; it’s amazing what you can save when you spend money! However, I do have to add that solar doesn’t really work on its own as we need electricity when the sun goes down, so we added batteries too. Wow, all this doing the right thing is super expensive. I would think of the air source heat pump as being the food at your favourite restaurant, but without the wine, without the solar panels and battery, it just doesn’t really make sense. With the cost of living crisis upon us, it isn’t easy to see how we can all transition to electricity without greater support. Yes, it’s easy on new builds but to replace gas and oil boilers is a very different financial equation

which needs greater thought. There is a government grant of up to £5,000 for an upgrade to air source heat pumps, unless you live in Scotland where it is £7,500. But, yes the bullpen is just about finished, I just need to finalise the external paving (and then remove the spare bar stool from our kitchen so mother-in-law can’t perch).

Life on the farm is certainly busy at the moment. I’ve started on the repair of the wrinkly tin sheds as the venue for our daughter’s wedding. I thought I would start on the roof in the summer before the bad weather started, unfortunately it started in July, but on a positive note at least it is easy to identify the water leaks. My wedding preparation is re-cladding the wrinkly tin sheds, adding in new floors and electrics, it’s all quite exciting really. I’ve decided on moorland green for the wall cladding and I’m favouring large rusty barn pendant lights, quite industrial; I know, I’m a natural wedding planner. The solar panels and battery will also feed this, it’s good to be ahead of the game and whilst I have to buy metal cladding and copper electrical cables (all quite energy intensive to source and make), once installed I can ignore that impact and point to the solar panels, they actually look great to my eyes, integrated panels on the roof of the bullpen. I am glossing over all the impact of materials that we have used, cement is the worst item, emitting 0.6 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of cement produced, but it is too easy to criticise the use when you consider that almost every building, every construction and infrastructure project relies on it, I don’t see that there is an alternative, there will be in the future, perhaps governments need to create legislation that better encourages the development of new products. In the meantime, I think our job is to look at the options and make informed choices and that today means cement. I can choose the air source heat pump and solar panels and battery; it isn’t the best financial investment at the moment, but it is a good one, it’s the right choice and it’s one that will pay off in years to come. I can also say that

the wedding won’t cost anything environmentally or financially for electricity, and those moorland green panels will be fab.

The sheep are looking well fed here but the high humidity has added to the fly strike and has kept Richie busy. Richie won best of breed and overall champion at Slaley Show, I was quite hurt actually, he didn’t pick the sheep from our land, we must have the duff ones! Getting champion of champions for a Texel, despite its squashed head look, is amazing; he is good, but he has to go as it’s a bit like an episode of Poldark when he comes over, he’s far too good looking. The badgers are also well fed and are causing quite a disturbance to our hens. I appreciate badgers have a right to be here and they need food, but it would be great if they could turn into vegetarians. The geese are doing well and Karen wants to

add to these with some Sebastopol geese, they are the ones that look like they are going to some weird ballet dance class and are known as the ‘pantomime goose’. With their curly, white feathers sticking out from their bodies, resembling a wedding dress, it’s only fitting! As our year ahead will be filled with wedding chatter, they will be a natural addition, a bit like that moorland green.

Falling for autumn

There’s a cold breeze filling the air, the night’s are growing longer and crunchy orange leaves are piling up in the streets just waiting for me to dive into… it must be autumn. As my humans start lighting candles and preparing packed lunch boxes, I know our weeks are about to settle back into a routine, while weekends belong to countryside walks, pub lunches and cosy evenings curled up on the sofa. With that in mind, I’ve sniffed out some

Luxe pet Q&A

Hi, my name’s Snowy. I am a 12-year-old Skewbald Jack donkey who currently lives at Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter. I came to live here in 2011 when my family could no longer take care of me. I have heard people say I am ‘a character’, whatever that means. I definitely think I’m the boss of this place and am pretty well known by those who have come to visit me over the years with a reputation for being a very mischievous mule and always on the lookout for trouble!

MY PERFECT DAY

My ideal day starts bright and early as I wake from my sleep and begin shouting at the staff to ‘hurry up’ with the loudest hee-haw I can muster. I do love the team here, they are my friends and take very good care of me; the only problem is they seem to think the other animal’s need attention too, when we all know I am the main character and should therefore always come first!

DONKEY DOWNTIME

I like to spend my time making sure all eyes are on me. I can often be heard for miles around hee-hawing at the top of my lungs, just to remind everyone I am here. I also thoroughly enjoy chomping on hay and chasing my pals, Violet and Winston, around the field.

HAYFUL HABITS

I have a habit of causing havoc! The team here are laughing at my antics! I have a special place in my heart for a wheelbarrow the team uses to clean up after me and, for some reason, I thoroughly enjoy chasing whoever is wheeling it around!

PERFECT PAMPER

It can be dirty work chasing Violet and Winston around all day, and I do like to roll around in the smelliest mud I can find. Luckily for me, I have a cute little birdie that visits me and sits on my back giving me a little groom! On top of that

Rupert loves:

luxe layers and snuggly blankets to try out this season, as well as sharing my favourite leftover pumpkin recipe for my fellow posh pets to try. All of that, plus I had an interesting chat with Snowy the donkey from Newcastle Dog and Cat shelter… you won’t want to miss that one!

Whatever plans you have this season, we wish you and your furry companions a fall-tastic time!

Rupert, your luxe pooch x

we have an amazing volunteer called Montana who visits every week to give me a lovely brush down and some welldeserved ear scratches!

DONKEY’S BEST FRIEND

I have got so many friends at the shelter but my best friends in the whole world are Winston and Violet, the other donkey’s here. Winston and I like to chase each other around the field play-fighting; Violet is much calmer and says I’m a bit of a pest, but I know deep down she loves me!

FONDEST MEMORY

This is tough as I simply cannot decide between the time I chased a member of staff out of the field to get my beloved wheelbarrow from them, or the time I bit the vet when she came to have a look at my teeth. I have so many happy memories of life at Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter. When I needed a place to stay they welcomed me with open arms, as they did with all my friend’s. They showed us love, kindness and compassion, and made sure we received the best care. Now we’re all well, we see all the smaller animals, like the cats and dogs, meeting new families and skipping off into the future to begin their ‘happy forever after’. We think we would quite like a family to call our very own one day… so the hunt is on to find us a permanent home in which we can bring a whole load of new shenanigans to!

DONKEY DOPPELGANGER

I am loud, I am opinionated, and I am very hairy… I am Brian Blessed in a donkey’s body!

Pumpkin pieces

Ingredients

1 cup fresh pumpkin (peeled, seeded, and cooked until soft)

1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce (ensure it does not contain any added sweeteners or xylitol)

2 cups oat flour (you can make this by grinding rolled oats in a blender)

1/4 cup plain, unsweetened Greek yoghourt (optional for extra creaminess)

Method

Preheat your oven to 175°C and line a baking tray with greaseproof paper. Prepare the fresh pumpkin by peeling

it, removing the seeds, and cutting it into small chunks. Steam or boil the pumpkin until it’s soft and tender.

Mash the cooked pumpkin with a fork or blend until you have a smooth puree. In a large mixing bowl, combine the pumpkin puree and unsweetened applesauce. If you’re adding Greek yoghurt for extra creaminess, include it at this step.

Gradually add the oat flour to the pumpkin mixture. Mix well after each addition until it forms a dough. If the mixture is too sticky, add a little more oat flour until it’s easier to handle.

Lightly flour a clean surface and roll out the dough to about 1/4-inch thickness. You can use cookie cutters in fun shapes like paw prints, pumpkins or fish for cats.

Place the treats on the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between each one.

Bake the treats for approximately 15-20 minutes or until they are firm and lightly browned.

Allow the treats to cool completely before serving them to your pets.

Serve one at a time as a treat to your furry friend and enjoy!

Into hibernation

Nicole Wood escapes to the countryside to experience a moment of calm at Nest, a new rural retreat featuring chic self-catered treehouses and waterside lodges near Durham…

Do you ever find yourself feeling stressed, burnt out and overwhelmed, just longing for a moment of calm without distraction from your busy thoughts and chaotic schedule? Introducing Nest. Life has been a bit of a whirlwind recently, throwing hurdle after hurdle, so when the opportunity to completely relax and unwind presented itself, I jumped at the opportunity.

A short drive off of the A19, meandering a few country bends on the way and we arrive at our destination. This little slice of paradise is nestled within the peaceful location of Red Hurworth Farm. Meticulously designed with love and care by Claire and Hugh Carter, the family-owned business presents a wide range of accommodation to cater to diverse guest preferences.

Couples can indulge in the luxury onebedroom lodges and elevated treehouses and larger parties can book to enjoy the more spacious five-bedroom property, with a children’s play area if booking with little ones. After purchasing the property in 2016, what started out as a plan to lease out the farm’s bungalow was soon snowballed into a passion project, and in 2019 the idea of Nest began to hatch.

With a handy and simple to use online check in, we arrive and follow the signs to Kingfisher, our humble abode for the weekend. Both Claire and Hugh have deep roots in County Durham, where they farm and raise their three children. Inspired by

the farm’s beauty, awe-inspiring landscapes, and abundant wildlife, they embarked on the mission to diversify Red Hurworth Farm. The avian theme throughout the business pays homage to the surrounding wildlife, with lodges aptly named after low nesting birds such as Kingfisher and Sandpiper, and treehouses as high nesting birds like Nuthatch and Wren. As we pull up and step out of the car, I’m in awe of the surroundings. Not a single soul, sound or distraction is in sight. Far into the distance, we catch a glimpse of a neighbouring lodge, but it’s safe to say that if peace and privacy is what you require from your staycation, you’ve certainly got it. We step into our waterside lodge and before we can even admire the sophisticated decor, our jaws have dropped to the floor with the breathtaking views beyond the bi-fold doors. A peacefully still reservoir glistening in the afternoon sunshine sweeps across as far as the eye can see, with rolling hills, enchanting trees swaying in the breeze and animals in their natural habitat making up this picturesque backdrop. Myself, my partner and our little pooch Rosie head straight outside to explore and admire. Only one of the four Nest’s are dog-friendly, making Kingfisher the perfect spot for us. Exceptional views aside, the outdoor area is kitted out with decking, on-trend outdoor furniture, a super stylish hot tub we can’t wait to sink into and a perfectly manicured lawn with natural shrubs and wildflowers outlining the lodge’s perimeter. As well as

looking aesthetically pleasing, every treehouse and lodge at Nest has been carefully designed by the Carters, utilising energy-efficient SIPS panels and adorned with larch or cedar cladding. Sedum roofs grace the lodges, creating havens for butterflies and bees. Back inside, the decor is simply stunning. The interiors showcase the vibrant colours of the birds they are named after, expertly crafted with the assistance of the Barnard Castle based interior designers, Niche Living. These chic and stylish spaces feature the most luxurious details, including Atlas Concorde Italian tiles and Lusso fittings in the bathrooms. Deep blues, muted browns, mustard tones and added greenery make up the colour palette. A stylish mustard sofa with a matching footstool facing toward the iconic view takes centre stage in the living area and is complemented by a striking, yet subtle on the eye wallpaper on one wall and dark shades of blue on the others. A suspended log burner, which comes equipped with wood and firelighters is a homely touch providing ample opportunity for cosy evenings. A fully equipped kitchen, Nespresso coffee machine, dining table, underfloor heating, inbuilt music system, board games and a smart TV ensure a home away from home stay. Through to the bedroom and the decor and amenities continue to impress. A super king bed and

plush furnishings guarantee a comfortable night’s sleep, while the skylight continues to highlight the countryside in all of its natural glory. Come nighttime, stargazing from the comfort of this cloud-like bed is an experience everyone must try. The ensuite is a real stand out for me and is going straight on to my Pinterest board for our new bathroom plans at home. Neutral tiles adorn the walls and floors, with hints of greenery and matte black finishes dotted throughout. If that wasn’t enough, the double sink, rain shower and divine-smelling toiletries make it the ultimate bathroom goal. After a long walk tiring out pooch, we retire to the hot tub. Complimentary towels and slippers are a lovely touch we take advantage of. Kitted out with built-in speakers, lights, dedicated head rests and massage jets to relax tired muscles, we slip

into the 40 degree bubbles and soak for an hour or two. Our evening is filled with good food, even better wine and a competitive game of dominoes; oh-so wholesome and fuelling our old at heart spirits. There’s plenty to see and do nearby. Castle Eden Walkway on the opposite side of the reservoir, offers picturesque walks while Durham City, a mere 20 minutes away, beckons with sights to explore. Local pubs and eateries in nearby villages provide further options for dining and relaxation. But for us, this weekend is all about hibernating away from the rest of the world, simply relaxing without pressure or distractions. So a lazy start, followed by a mid-morning stroll and more soaking in the hot tub is what’s on the agenda. As we soak away our worries, the only sights and sounds to be aware of are those of natural beauty.

Sheep, cows and horses take up residence in nearby fields, birds soar across the sky and staring out at the reservoir and swaying trees never tires. My only invasive thought is ‘I wish I could paint as this would be the perfect spot to sit and capture its beauty’ and well, that’s not a bad thought to have.

If you’re looking to completely switch off, forget about the rest of the world for a moment and be at one with the peace and tranquillity of nature without compromising on luxury, then resting at the Nest should be top of your ‘to do’ list this autumn.

Prices start from £270 per night for midweek stays and £295 per night for weekends.

1. Refresh your garden

As the autumn months come rolling in, your garden goes through a mesmerising transformation into a tapestry of nature’s most vibrant hues and textures, painting the landscape with a rich and diverse palette. As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, your garden undergoes a graceful transition, trading the exhilaration of summer for the tranquillity of autumn. Creating a mini harvest display is a great way to welcome in the new season. Arrange baskets of apples, pears, nuts, pumpkins and other seasonal fruit and vegetables to evoke a real farm-to-table feel.

By introducing animal feeders to your garden, you’ll encourage wildlife to pop by! Watching birds flitter and squirrels scurry adds an interactive element to your new season space.

Despite the temperature taking a crisp turn, don’t turn your back on your outdoor living area just yet. Add cosy seating areas with cushions, and blankets to provide a comfortable spot to enjoy your garden’s beauty while sipping warm beverages and enjoying great company.

2. Display books

Decorating your coffee table with an array of enticing reads provides an invitation for your guest’s eyes to dance across the collection of titles, discovering forgotten classics, long-lost favourites, and intriguing new reads waiting to be explored. The stacked books will contribute to the visual richness of your decor, forming a truly unique centrepiece.

Indulging in the pleasure of curling up with a captivating book on a crisp autumn afternoon is a cherished experience that promotes a sense of tranquillity and escapism. As the world outside embraces the changing colours and cooling breeze, there’s a certain magic in transforming your living space into a haven that mirrors the cosiness of the season.

The warm glow of softly lit lamps, the gentle crackle of a nearby fire, or the filtered sunlight casting shadows on the pages all contribute to an atmosphere that enhances utmost comfort.

Time for change

3. Arrange autumn-coloured flowers

As the warm embrace of summer gradually gives way to the crisp allure of autumn, finding a way to straddle these two captivating seasons becomes a delightful endeavour. If you’re not quite ready to bid farewell to the sunlit days, a carefully curated floral arrangement can serve as a bridge, capturing the essence of both summer’s vibrancy and autumn’s impending cosiness. By selecting blooms in hues that range from the sun-kissed radiance of red and orange to the deep richness of burgundy and yellow, you seamlessly merge the spectrum of summer’s vitality with autumn’s emerging warmth. Creating this harmonious blend involves a careful orchestration of colour, texture, and form. The vibrant reds and oranges of dahlias and zinnias echo the fading brilliance of summer, while marigolds and chrysanthemums introduce the earthy tones that define autumn’s arrival. The vase that contains this botanical masterpiece is equally important in producing the desired aesthetic. A rustic vase or a piece of pottery, with earthy textures and colours, connect the arrangement to the naturalness of season.

4. Bring in baskets

Baskets bring a cosy, natural element into any space, and are also an effective way to make storage solutions look good. There’s something fundamentally autumnal about a wicker basket, don’t you think?

A deep basket, thoughtfully stationed by the sofa or armchair, becomes a home for plush blankets or neatly folded throws. As temperatures dip, there’s nothing better than taking the chill away by reaching for a warm blanket.

Equally versatile is the role of the flat basket, which effortlessly doubles as a tray. Placed on top of a coffee table or kitchen counter, it serves as a stylish catch-all for daily essentials like keys and loose change, adding an element of organisation without sacrificing the autumnal aesthetic. Baskets, available in a multitude of shapes, sizes, and materials, encourage your creative instincts to flourish. From woven, wicker, rattan, or other natural fibres, authenticity is a celebration of all things autumn.

5. Incorporate soft whites

An advantage of choosing a neutral colour palette is its ability to facilitate effortless style transitions as seasons change. Incorporating shades of white, cream, and ivory creates an ideal canvas for introducing autumn-inspired elements. If your existing colour scheme isn’t neutral or if you prefer a touch more vibrancy, you can still achieve a seasonal effect using neutral hues. Employ white and cream details such as throw blankets, pillows, rugs, and even pumpkins to harmonise with a livelier background of colours.

As summer wanes, muted hues create a canvas for the warm reds, oranges, and golds that define this chilly season.

Picture a vibrant crimson sofa adorned with a creamy throw and an array of ivory pillows, or white pumpkins and cream-coloured gourds clustered on a coffee table. The contrast of rich colours and soothing neutrals creates a visual symphony, adding a modern yet timeless element to your home.

SEP/OCT23 56 luxe-magazine.co.uk AUTUMN TRANSFORMATION
10 ways to seamlessly transition your home into the autumn season…

6. Layer textures

Infuse your home with the essence of autumn by skillfully layering textures. Opt for subtle additions, allowing you the flexibility to customise your interior.

Imagine the soft embrace of a plaid blanket gracing the foot of your bed, its woven pattern reminiscent of flannel shirts and autumn picnics. This single addition transforms your resting space into a haven of cosiness, inviting you to snuggle under its warmth as the temperatures drop outside. Across the room, a leather chair gains a touch of textural contrast as a faux sheepskin pelt drapes casually over its back. The juxtaposition of smooth leather against the plush texture of the pelt transforms the chair into an inviting retreat, a place where you can curl up with a book and a cup of tea, cocooned in autumn’s embrace.

9. Work in plaid patterns

Plaid is a timeless pattern which possesses a rare versatility that fits this cosy season like a glove. Within its symmetrical lines and intersecting hues, it becomes a canvas for expressing autumn spirit in our living spaces.

As you scatter plaid throughout your home, the patterns gently weave their way through the fabric of your decor. Pillows adorned with plaid evoke images of fireside chats and warm mugs of pumpkin spiced latte, while throws casually draped over sofas and chairs hint at evenings spent wrapped in the comforts of home.

Here, whites, greys, and beiges become the unifying backdrop, allowing the patterns to shine without overwhelming the senses. Amidst this neutral canvas, accents of autumn’s palette - warm oranges, deep browns, and rich reds - add depth and vibrancy.

8. Add soft light

At this time of year, the sun gradually sets earlier and earlier and the evenings become a canvas for cosy moments. By using candles and warm light bulbs, you welcome the promise of mellow illumination and cosy evenings spent in your humble abode. Adding soft lights to your home can also reduce stress and improve sleep quality, as the soft glow can have a calming effect on your mind and body - therefore creating a more tranquil and peaceful atmosphere. Soft lighting can also make it easier on the eyes compared to bright, harsh lighting. It reduces glare and eyestrain, making it more comfortable for activities like reading or watching TV, things we all love as the colder evenings approach.

Not only are candles a great way to create the cosiest atmosphere, they fill your home with an invigorating scent. See our top tip number 10 to discover the perfect autumn scent!

7. Include natural elements

One of the best early autumn decorating ideas is to bring natural outdoor elements into your home. Fill a large bowl or wide vase with pinecones, leaves, branches, acorns, pumpkins, and gourds. Natural pieces bring in just the right amount of seasonal touches which look amazing, and the best part? They’re easy to swap, change, add to, and are also super cost effective. We’re all about embracing the beauty of nature.

10. Autumnal scents

Scents inspired by the season have the remarkable ability to evoke a sense of nostalgia, warmth, and cosiness. Infusing your home with the rich fragrances that come hand in hand with this time of year can create an immersive experience that captures the very essence of autumn.

Some fall favourites are bergamot, cinnamon, spiced pumpkin, ginger, vanilla, cedarwood, frankincense, pomegranate, and fig. Any scents with earthy and woody undertones are guaranteed to leave you feeling like you’re in a crisp autumn forest.

Infusing your home with these scents can be achieved through scented candles, essential oil diffusers, potpourri, wax melts, room sprays, and even natural elements like cinnamon sticks and dried orange slices. By choosing scents that resonate with you and align with the feelings you associate with autumn, you can create a multisensory experience that enhances the beauty of the season and envelops your space in a comforting embrace.

Digital wellbeing for young people

Excellent success

Barnard Castle School has garnered the highest accolades from official inspectors for its forward-looking education system tailored to prepare today’s youth for the challenges of the 2060s and ‘70s. The Independent Schools Inspectorate awarded the institution with an ‘excellent’ rating in both ‘Academic Achievement’ and ‘Personal Development’. This achievement is attributed to the implementation of ‘A Barney Education’, a custom curriculum approach benefiting its 730 students aged four to 18. Affectionately known as ‘Barney’, the school fosters an inspirational, empathetic, and unpretentious

Unlocking potential

Dame Allan’s Junior School and Nursery have embraced the transformative Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL) programme, initially introduced at a nearby state primary school, Parkhead Community Primary School. The OPAL initiative aims to foster creativity, imagination, resilience, and confidence in children through purposeful outdoor play.

Collaborating with Parkhead, Dame Allan’s integrated innovative play zones, like den building, crafting, mud kitchens, and a scooter track, into their learning facilities. The successful implementation is thanks to a close partnership that enabled

environment, that nurtures character development. Students emerge confident, resilient, curious, tolerant, and ambitious, poised to excel in an evolving world.

Headmaster Tony Jackson said: “This was a rigorous and comprehensive inspection and we are unbelievably proud of the outcome, which is validation of everything we endeavour to do.

“It is a pleasure to work alongside so many talented professionals and be part of such a special, unique community, and we are excited about what the future holds for our school.” barnardcastleschool.org.uk

Royal Grammar School Newcastle celebrates working with 105 local state schools and 10,000 of their students, raising aspiration and educational attainment across the region through innovative academic support, stretch and challenge. The school is delivering real social impact to children through life-changing, means-tested bursary places, and now 1 in 16 children at the private school receive a free education. Bursaries are targeted at families living in the most deprived areas of the region, and in the past 20 years, RGS has supported 447 bursary families, enabled by loyal donors who support the Jesmond school’s social commitment. Additionally, the school is increasingly sharing academic and co-curricular opportunities through over 50

different projects, run in partnership with schools from Berwick to Middlesborough. Project subjects include sciences, technology, engineering, art and debating, to name a few and are supported by a number of companies and foundations, such as British Engines.

Chris Zarrage, director of school-led regional network Schools North East, said: “It’s fantastic to see schools like RGS finding new ways to address issues that impact upon the schools of our region.”

Their 2023 social impact report highlights success stories, including improved mock exam grades and teacher training initiatives, exemplifying their commitment to societal betterment.

Caroline Dask chats to Amanda Hardie, acting head of Newcastle High School For Girls, about going the extra mile to prepare young girls for the future ahead, and building a new generation of leaders…

What are some of the core values of Newcastle High School For Girls?

Our school encourages girls to be the best possible versions of themselves. We focus on developing their individual potential through our eight ‘C’ characteristics model. The first one is Care - placing great importance on selfacceptance and self-love. Collaboration - encouraging them to ask questions and stay curious. Composure - to be poised and composed, to be able to deal with various situations that they encounter. Courage and Confidence - to possess these qualities in their approach to life; Creativity - in knowing how to think outside the box, and Communication. We centre all of our rewards policies around these, all in the hope of preparing them well for life beyond school.

How does Newcastle High School For Girls ensure that new students have a smooth transition and feel welcomed into the school community?

Our school is extremely welcoming and we are a very strong community. We have systems and staff in place, to make sure new students settle well into school. There is a clear transition programme in place, in the run-up to a girl joining us, that includes various activities and events prior to them starting.

Back in June, we had an exciting Shakespeare-themed day to welcome Year Seven girls. They did some Elizabethan dancing, we had a banquet, read some poetry, and it helped new girls to make friends, get to know each other, and feel confident within the

environment of the school. We also hold information evenings for parents because it’s as much of a transition for a parent as it is for a child.

What measures does the school take to address any potential challenges that new students might face during their initial days or weeks?

We have a lot of girls joining the school at different times. Whether it’s a big cohort joining in September, or girls joining a variety of Year Groups within the academic year, we make sure every girl has an appointed teacher, Head of Year or a Phase Leader, who will keep a close eye on them in those early days. All of our girls are extremely welcoming and supportive, so they often fall over each other trying to welcome and support new girls, and we make sure they have a buddy, who will show them around the school, meet them for lunch, and check in on them. It’s always lovely to see this big-sister relationship developing.

We communicate with parents too, so that if a girl seems to be having a lovely time at school but is a little bit unsettled at home, we can work together to make sure their daughter is fully happy and supported. I check in on them as well, just to see how they feel, if they are settled, and if there is anything that is worrying them.

Could you provide an overview of the range of extracurricular activities available to students at Newcastle High School for Girls?

There is a huge range of extra-curricular activities that we offer before school,

during school and after school. We have sporting clubs such as netball, hockey, football, trampolining, athletics, gymnastics, and cricket. There are musical activities, such as choirs and orchestras and creative clubs, such as dance, drama, art clubs, robotics and computing. We also have extracurricular activities that include academic stretch, exploring beyond the curriculum in areas like science or maths.

Our aim with all of these activities is to encourage girls to be curious and understand that learning is not just about following a specification, it’s about asking further questions and fully embracing this learning adventure, in whatever subject it might be.

In addition, we have a wide range of societies for students, for example for those who are interested in medicine, law or history. These societies are often run by girls themselves, which encourages leadership skills and empowerment. For girls that can’t find a society or an after activity to join that appeals to them, we strongly encourage them to create their own clubs. An example of this is the new anime club. Newcastle High School For Girls is lucky to be a part of the Girls’ Day School Trust, which means students have an extended range of opportunities to get involved in competitions, debates and sporting rallies, building connections far beyond the Newcastle area.

An initiative that we’re extremely proud of is Life 360, which prepares Sixth Form students for life beyond school, and teaches them financial literacy, political understanding, social responsibility and citizenship.

How does the school encourage students to participate in these activities and balance them with their academic commitments?

We have a timetable in place that allows girls to identify where they are going to attend clubs, and their form teacher will look at it with them to make sure there is the right balance between these two. With girls that have a lot of in and outof-school commitments, such as sport, we go as far as personalising their timetable, so they are given the time they need during the school day, to make sure they are keeping on top of their academic work.

Are there any leadership opportunities for girls that go beyond organising extra-curricular activities?

Yes! Besides encouraging girls to form their own clubs and lead societies, we provide support in how to become the best leader they can be. We talk to them about things such as, how to be a good leader, what makes a good leader, what they hope to achieve as a leader, etc. We also have an assembly programme called See It to Be It, that runs across junior and senior school, where we bring in female leaders from across a huge range of careers and who talk to girls about the role they have, any challenges that they faced, and encourage them to have that aspiration of being a leader.

What are your aspirations for Newcastle High School For Girls in the coming years, and how do you plan to continue enhancing the school’s reputation and impact?

Newcastle High School For Girls is an outstanding school. I want us to continue being the school where academic excellence is at the forefront of what we do, the school where we continue building the next generation of female leaders, and where we continue equipping girls with all the necessary skills they will need in the future. We want our girls to be trail-blazers and future world shapers, and we work hard on building that aspiration through our various leadership and extra-curricular activities.

I always say to girls, you can’t all be the best at everything, but you can always do your best and be the best version of yourself, and that is what Newcastle High School For Girls is all about. newcastlehigh.gdst.net

Life at Yarm Sixth Form focuses on educating for life through a wide range of experiences and responsibilities. Debating, Yarm apprentice, peer support mentoring, timetabled activities, clubs, sport, drama and music are just some of the opportunities on offer that develop skills and build character, setting our pupils up for life.

Rowing is an increasingly popular and successful sport. For those joining the sixth form, the River Tees at Yarm is a great opportunity to take up the activity for the first time.

All of our pupils, whether they’re in nursery, pre-prep, preparatory school, senior school or sixth form, have access to the school’s award winning facilities, like the 750-seat Princess Alexandra auditorium and the music school. There are also over 100 weekly activities and clubs available to ensure the individual talents of each pupil are being discovered, developed and celebrated. Back to school reads

Our top picks to help youngsters navigate the new school season…

FOR PRE-TEENS… How To Say No by Michelle Elman

How To Say No is a must-read this back to school season. It focuses on topics such as saying no to demanding friends, unappealing parties and unwanted hugs, as well as establishing boundaries with tech. The author of the book offers young readers the tools to say no in a range of challenging circumstances. With plenty of comicstyle illustrations by Sara Tomate, providing visual aids on how to set boundaries, this will make for a useful and engaging read when dealing with new situations and environments.

FOR TEENS… Failosophy For Teens by Elizabeth Day

AI has definitely been the buzzword for quite some time now. With conflicting views on its benefit to the greater society, one thing remains certain, AI is here and, more likely than not, it’s here to stay.

Over the last couple of years, AI has benefited various sectors, and education is no exception. Just as computers once enhanced the way students learn, AI is continuing to improve the educational system in more ways than we know. From personalising learning experiences, to intelligent tutoring systems, AI is making learning an overall more effective and engaging experience. Some educational establishments in the North East have embraced the arrival of AI, one of them being Gateshead College. The E-spaces platform was invented by former teacher Yvonne Buluma Samba, and it uses data to assess, adapt and personalise lessons for pupils. It also has a unique function to predict the grades of each student, and while the software is still being tested in North East schools, it has proven to be well-received.

The creator of E-spaces highlights the mission of this AI software in classrooms, as a tool to reduce teacher burnout while increasing student engagement. Although the software might sound and look futuristic, it’s extremely easy to use, and was made for teachers by teachers.

While the benefits of integrating AI technology into classrooms helps teachers, it has an even greater impact for students, as it equips them with powerful skills and knowledge, ready for future endeavours.

Author of The AI Classroom, and founder of The AI Educator, Dan Fitzpatrick, has recently visited Newcastle University Business School

at an event organised by the Innovation SuperNetwork, where he spoke to 50 businesses, encouraging them to seize the potential of AI.

“AI cannot be ignored, it will affect all walks of life, and in education, the current system we have simply cannot deliver what students need for the future,” says Dan.

There is a certain stereotype floating around about AI and its replacement of traditional teaching methods, however its main purpose is to complement rather than substitute it. Traditionally, classrooms have followed a one-size-fits-all approach, where teachers teach at a pace that caters to the average student. However, AI algorithms can now analyse individual student data and learning patterns to create customised learning paths. This ensures that students can progress at their own pace, reinforcing their strengths and addressing their weaknesses. For instance, an AI-driven language learning app might offer different exercises based on a student’s grammar proficiency, vocabulary level, and even preferred learning style. Another great advantage of AI in the education sector is intelligent tutoring. AI identifies the areas a student might require more practice and explanation. It does so by analysing a student’s responses and progress, and providing feedback to overcome any learning obstacles.

Besides, AI can help keep the students engaged and interested in learning, as it provides tools such as gamification, an AI software that creates educational games, that both stimulate learning and provide knowledge. When in history lessons, AI can allow students to explore the subject in a virtual environment, which is extremely helpful in trying to

understand complex concepts. While the benefits of using AI to enhance learning are undeniable, there are some concerns regarding students that use it as a last minute resort. Instead of using tools such as ChatGPT to help with research, it is often used to write essays and projects. However, some teachers rely on familiarity with students and their abilities to identify authentic essays, from the ones written by AI. After all, learning is a gradual process, and more often than not, tools such as ChatGPT are not able to provide a fully satisfactory result, ready to submit; after all it is meant to complement learning, not to replace it.

Richard Harvey, a professor of computer science at the University of East Anglia, says that students should not be discouraged from using AI in a sensible way. He adds: “I remember a similar reaction when spellcheckers first came out but people eventually came around to them. ChatGPT could be used in a similar way and have started providing its answers to pupils for them to develop quality checks.”

As of May 2021, it is said that assistive technology, in some shape or form, is used in 43% of schools in the North East, both by teachers and students, proving that AI holds great promise for education. Although it’s a powerful tool to enhance learning, the data it collects should be handled with utmost care. As AI continues to integrate into various aspects of our lives, its impact on education is undeniable. From personalised learning experiences and intelligent tutoring systems, AI is reshaping the educational landscape in more ways than one. The future of AI in education is exciting, but it’s important to tread carefully, addressing privacy concerns and finding the right balance between technology and the human element. Only by doing so, will students be able to yield the best results, ready to tackle the future ahead.

A true guiding light for young minds navigating the complexities of life. With profound insights, relatable anecdotes, and a compassionate approach, this book reframes the concept of failure, empowering teenagers to embrace setbacks as stepping stones to growth. It’s a toolkit for resilience, selfacceptance, and courage, providing useful advice on things such as, talking openly about failure, turning failure into success, and reframing negative thoughts into positive ones. A handy guide for those moments, when life doesn’t go the way you planned!

LITTLE

Nadia McSheffrey, our luxe parenting expert, explains new parenting technique terms which may be flooding your social media feeds…

I don’t know about you but at this time of year, I start to notice more parenting memes and gifs popping up all over the internet. The craze du jour seems to be about labelling parents with the wildest names such as tiger, lawnmower, elephant, helicopter and even jellyfish! I’m not a fan of labels but it is interesting to see how these descriptions reflect how society has changed over the past few years. The rise in reliance on technology, Covid, the mental health epidemic and a crumbling education system have all changed the world our children live in. This, naturally, has had an impact on the way we bring up our families. In my experience as a parent educator, it has left parents confused, overwhelmed and sometimes terrified about the choices they make and how to cope when things get challenging.

The ‘helicopters’ and ‘lawnmowers’ are probably the parents who reach out to me the most. A lawnmower parent (also known as a bulldozer or a snowplough) will ‘mow’ down any obstacle in their child’s way. They rush to intervene, saving the child from any potential problem or discomfort. A lawnmower parent wouldn’t think twice about emailing a teacher telling them that the homework they set was too hard or speaking to a sports coach demanding reasons why their child was passed over for a particular position. Lawnmower parents leave work to drop off a P.E. kit at school that their teen left behind or run themselves ragged doing simple chores that their child could do for themselves. The majority of lawnmower parents indeed have their child’s best interests at heart. They either love their child so much that they don’t want them to feel any emotional pain or discomfort, or they are afraid that their child won’t cope, will get into trouble or isn’t receiving the treatment they deserve and so they intervene. However, this style of parenting significantly hinders the development of their child. As Julie Lythcott-Haims states: “The point is to prepare the kid for the road, instead of preparing the road for the kid.” When I have worked with lawnmower parents, we have noted that their children don’t have any healthy coping mechanisms. They are so used to their parents intervening when times get tough that they lack resilience and often falter at the smallest challenge. I know of an adult child in her twenties who calls home, unsure of which washing-up liquid to purchase for her halls of residence! Children of lawnmower parents often have poor problem-solving skills and lack intrinsic motivation. They find it very difficult to ask for help because they are so used to someone swooping in to save them before they

even register the problem. A ‘helicopter’ parent is closely linked to the ‘lawnmower’ style of parenting, but helicopter parents go one step further. They ‘hover’ both physically and emotionally close to the child, so that their every move is observed and analysed. You can spot helicopter parents everywhere these days; standing inside the play area in the park, hovering around the classroom door to speak to the teacher at any opportunity, scrutinising their teen’s revision from over their shoulder. Helicopter parenting is probably the most common form of parenting in the UK. My family and I were fortunate enough to travel to Italy during the summer and we often visited a quaint square in the evening where three or four local generations would meet together. I have to tell you, there wasn’t one helicopter parent in sight! Toddlers, tweens and teenagers were all left to play together, deal with their own arguments and use their own initiative. If someone was hurt and needed adult intervention, of course, the parents would stop and soothe their child, but other than that, the kids just got on themselves. And honestly, it was such a relief! My son played games with the other children night after night. There were no issues, no unkindness and nor were there any over-inflated situations where parents got involved and marched children over to apologise or complain about the behaviour of other little ones. The Italian children regulated themselves. If one child got too boisterous, someone would suggest that they ‘calmo’. If a toddler was trying to kick the football, then teens would stop to let them score a goal. It worked beautifully and that’s what I see missing in both schools and in homes in the UK. Children are so much more capable than we think they are. They are natural problem-solvers and they understand appropriate social behaviour quite early on. They don’t always need our intervention; in fact, they often thrive without it! Helicopter parents have been described by their children as suffocating and overbearing. However, like lawnmower parents, they have the children’s best interests at heart. They want them to do well in school, have a nice group of friends and become successful. But often the children in these situations either become entitled and conceited or become resentful of all of the parental involvement and begin to detach from their well-meaning carers.

I firmly believe that every child needs at least one adult who delights in them and loves them unconditionally but helicopter parenting goes beyond this. These parents think that their child is always right, always the victim and always superior to others. They have their parent’s unconditional approval.

This type of helicopter parenting can lead to a more toxic trait called enmeshment. This is when the lines blur between parent and child; for example, the child’s successes or failures become the parent’s successes or failures as they live vicariously through their child. An enmeshed relationship is often the result of a parent’s past trauma and/ or difficult upbringing. If a parent came from an emotionally dysfunctional family themselves, they often try to compensate with their own families by showering their children with affection and attention. However, because boundaries are murky, this love can turn into adoration and can border on the obsessional. They become their parent’s confidante and the parent is deeply involved in every aspect of their life, sometimes becoming jealous when the child wants to spend time with others. As you can imagine, children in these situations generally lack independence, autonomy and they can often have difficult interpersonal relationships in later life.

You may see elements of yourself in some of these descriptions, but please don’t feel guilty. I think we all tend to drift from one parenting style to the next depending upon the day, but it’s important to step back and look at the big picture once in a while. For example, what if your child comes home and tells you a child shouted at them at school? Would you rush in to fix things? Is your involvement necessary? Is it a case that your child is being bullied and you are being an advocate for them or is it just developmentally-appropriate squabbles that can be resolved by the children themselves?

As much as I don’t like labels, I did come across a description of a ‘Lighthouse’ parent in my research and it resonated with me, as I often use the analogy of ‘The North Star’ which has similar connotations of mutual love, respect and trust. According to Dr Kenneth Ginsburg, lighthouse parenting ‘is when a parent creates a balance between love and setting limits for a child in order that a child is nurtured, safe and respects parents as important figures in their lives.’ A lighthouse parent is a constant, guiding light especially when the world creates storms. They give their children the independence to leave the harbour and set out on their own knowing that they can find their way back, if or when they need to. I’m sure you’ll agree that the world would be a better place if everyone had someone to be their lighthouse in a safe harbour.

LUXE MAMA

Falling back into routine…

For some, September is a time to sneak in those final days of summer sun, for others it’s time to swap flip-flops and sun hats for chunky knits and wooly hats. For me, it has always been ‘the start of something new’.

The start of the new school term feels more of a ‘fresh start’ than the turn of the year for me. The fond scent of a freshly cut school field and squeaky clean new leather school shoes means it’s time to get back to it.

Back to school >>

Our luxe kit list for September…

With that in mind, we’ve picked out some cool kit for the start of term - from beanies and backpacks, to lunchboxes and jackets. And as we approach the first break in the school year, we’ve got some spooky, Halloween-themed family days out to look forward to.

All of that, plus some pilates pointers from the lovely Sammy at UMove Studio in Northallerton. It’s safe to say the reformer machine is our new happy place!

Class act >>

When George was a baby, I signed up to every baby class in the vicinity, but I struggled to find baby-friendly activities that would also help me to feel good and bounce back from pregnancy and birth. This time around, I discovered UMove Studio in Northallerton, and now the best part of the week for Nora and I is our Reformer Pilates class on a Wednesday morning. And an added bonus - I don’t leave with nursery rhymes spinning around my head! UMove founder and pilates instructor, Sammy Shardha, tells us why postpartum pilates can be a real game-changer for new mums like me…

“Introducing gentle movement post-birth has many benefits, not only to the body, but also for mindfulness and bonding with your baby,” says Sammy. “Pilates focuses on area specific movement and control, helping to regain deeper core muscle strength and stability. Some of the benefits of postnatal pilates are:

- Aid recovery and healing

- Helps with mobility and the everyday function of having a baby

- Improves posture and helps to prevent lower back, hip and pelvis pain

- Restores muscle strength in areas that may have become weakened or overused

- Improves energy levels and provides an overall sense of wellbeing

Nicole Wood chats to Cyrenne Khaliq-Fleming to discuss Gosforth’s newest play café, Hopscotch…

Returning home to the North East from London after 14 years in finance, mum of three Cyrenne, with ambitions to set up her own business, identified an opportunity in the area and is currently about to open an exciting new play café on Gosforth High Street.

Hopscotch, which is due to open this September, will have distinct interiors that incorporate a stylish café, innovative play area and outdoor playground.

Hopscotch will be somewhere that parents, grandparents and friends can relax while the children engage in fun, entertaining and safe play.

“There are some great play areas. One I used to take my children to was Pineapple and Bears in Gateshead and it is a similar concept, but what I found is I was searching for these places and travelling out of our local area to find them. Gosforth has nothing like that despite the amount of growing families in the area,” Cyrenne explains.

“When I say play area, I don’t mean a big

industrial soft play, it’s more of a boutiquestyle play café where little ones can have fun while parents, grandparents and friends can enjoy a nice cup of coffee, a slice of cake or a bite to eat in nice surroundings,” she adds.

The bespoke play space has been designed by the industry’s forward-thinking supplier Tigerplay, who are creating an inspirational structure that offers obstacles and slides for little explorers, as well as a ball pool and sensory points for babies. Role play huts and a chill-out zone for older children will also feature, as well as a unique

outdoor area for young adventurers. “We’re looking to operate sessions and create set times so people can make the most of their time in a relaxed, yet playful environment. For example, you can book a table for tea after school and enjoy a delicious meal while the kids play for a little while and burn off energy before bedtime,” she says.

As well as weekday and weekend sessions, the play café will be available to host children’s parties and other events. It will offer exclusive use, working closely with local businesses to offer a range of added extras to make those occasions special.

“We’ve also obtained an alcohol licence,” laughs Cyrenne.

“I know that sounds odd, but I’ve seen it done before and it works great because it’s a place for parents to enjoy too. The idea is that on a Friday afternoon between 5pm and 7pm we offer a pre-bathtime happy hour,” she explains. With an emphasis on using locally sourced suppliers, Hopscotch will offer an inviting brunch and daytime menu, quality coffee,

delicious pastries and sweet treats as well as fun nutritious children’s meals. “Giant soft plays are great for kids, you can’t fault them. Kids love them, but we want somewhere that’s enjoyable for the whole family. There’s nothing worse than attending a child’s play area and not having anything nice to eat or drink. We wanted to make sure we were offering some delicious drinks and bites to eat for children and adults. The brunch menu will include typical dishes like poached eggs on toast and on the lunch menu you can expect fresh salads and a selection of sandwiches. There’ll also be a range of tasty kids meals, cakes, pastries and a great coffee offering,” she says.

As a local resident in Gosforth, Cyrenne hopes the café will be a welcome addition to the high street, which with further planned investment will attract thriving new local businesses and offer a renewed sense of community for current and future generations.

Bob Arora takes the brand-new hybrid, BMW XM, out for a spin...

There aren’t many manufacturers who haven’t decided to have an SUV in their range. Even Ferrari has succumbed to having a cash cow in the range. Its new Purosangue is going to be the next must-have car for Premiership football players, replacing their current car of choice, the Lamborghini Urus.

The Purosangue is currently only available to Ferraris’s most loyal customers though and is set to be one of the most in-demand cars for years to come.

The car I’ve had the pleasure of driving this month however is the new BMW XM which is the first bespoke car from BMW’s M Division since 1970. It’s also the first hybrid from the M Division too. My first impression was that the XM certainly has presence. From the imposing front grill to its sheer size, it reminded me of a Cadillac Escalade. This large car will be very much at home on a freeway, but, given that the size of everything is huge in America, it will actually look small compared to some of the monster trucks. BMW is expecting half of all XM sales to be in the States and China which wouldn’t surprise me as bigger is usually better in both countries.

The XM I was lucky enough to drive was painted in a beautiful sporty Metallic Blue.

It was also fitted with two-tone optional 23-inch alloys. Being a fan of large alloys these definitely helped give the car an imposing look. I’m surprised there aren’t any retractable side steps fitted to the car, as it would certainly make it much easier to get into.

The rear has quad exhaust pipes that you would expect to see on sports cars rather than a big off-roader and two BMW badges on each corner of the rear screen are a homage to the beautiful M1.

The designers have gone to town with the XM’s design. From the sporty wing mirrors to the M4-style bonnet and the laser LED lights, it all just screams M Car everywhere you look.

There is mood lighting all over the car, and when you start it up, a Hans Zimmer tune plays and the M Division colours light along the roof. It doesn’t sound very impressive but it kept me entertained for a while!

Being a hybrid makes the XM an ideal choice for fleet managers who want to reduce their company car tax bill. The on-board 25kW battery pack takes at least four hours to charge via a 7W charger. In electric mode, you can drive for 55 miles on a charge, and, when you need some power, plant your foot on the accelerator and the petrol engine kicks in. The 4.4l twin-turbo V8 engine sounds amazing. Add in the electric motors

and this car is more like a sports car than a nigh on three-tonne off-roader. The engine and electric motors give the car 644bhp, and 60mph is reached in a sprightly 4.3 seconds. Its top speed is limited to 155mph.

Step inside the car and it’s very lavish indeed, from the leather to the Alcantara and carbon fibre it all screams quality. The paddles behind the wheel are carbon fibre and really add to the car’s quality feel. The diamond seat stitching reminded me of the seats you’d find in a Mulliner Bentley. The dash is covered in leather and very expensive-feeling materials. The curved widescreen dominates the dash, and half of the screen in the driver’s vision has the speed and rev counter. The other half of the screen controls the sat nav, music and phone connectivity which is all accessed via the iDrive which is very user-friendly and simple to use.

From the Bowers and Wilkins speakers to the wireless phone charging and heated and ventilated cup holders, the standard specification is what you’d expect for a car priced from £148,000. If you decide to go for the range-topping Label Red model, you’ll be looking to pay £178,000 with an increased brake horsepower of 744bhp. As you’d expect, due to the sheer size of the car, there is plenty of room in the front and rear. Passengers in the rear of the car have acres of room - three people can sit in the back in total comfort. One area where it’s beaten by its competitors however is boot space, as both the Lamborghini Urus and Porsche Cayenne have more. Looking in the boot I spotted a bag that contained the charging cable for the car, and this bag wouldn’t look out of place in any designer shop!

Spending a few days with this car you don’t tire of the sound of the exquisite engine. Add in the beautiful interior and this car is definitely going to be a rarer sight on the roads than the new Range Rover.
