contents 12>> Cultural summer ISSUE 53 JUL/AUG18 We’ve done our best to give every bit of Luxe a sprinkle of sunshine in this edition - with good reason. As I write, I glance at reports of a great big heatwave heading our way. Pinch of salt or not, let’s just run with it. So step into gorgeous clothes in gelato shades, treat your interiors to paints inspired by the colours of Whitby and then fill your diary with a summer’s-worth of delicious food festivals. Griddle some prawns like a pro on the barbecue and if you haven’t yet booked a summer getaway, we can point you in the direction of some tried and tested deserted beaches and chic islands off the beaten track. Once you’re there, the only requirement is to sit back and read on. We’ve talked to some fascinating people for this magazine. Denise Welch is one of them. You might think you know her, after all, she’s certainly lived a life in the spotlight. There are lots of versions of Denise - the one we met in her home was a wise and unabashed woman, as you’ll discover. Inspiring too is Chris Moore, whose photographic career has spanned the decades and trends of the fashion catwalks, and who escapes to Northumberland to nurture his herbs - talk about a life of contrasts! Consider us your summer suitcase; chic, nattily-packed and ready to take you from picnics to parties to poolside.

A personal collection of shoes by Vivienne Westwood, best known of course as the creator of punk and new wave fashions, opening the Sex boutique in the 1970s with Malcolm McLaren. The exhibition at York Castle Museum spans the decades from the 1970s and includes some classic examples of the innovation and passion inherent in the designer. The black spike SEX shoe, the hammerhead shoe, pirate boots, the limited edition collection with Nine West and the recent mass market collaboration with the Brazilian company Melissa, clearly demonstrate that she remains the undisputed Queen of British fashion. www.yorkcastlemuseum.org
A brand new exhibition of unseen works by Northumberland’s celebrated Pitmen Painters goes on display at Woodhorn Museum, Ashington. ‘Pitmen Painters Unseen’ brings together a collection of paintings by the Ashington Group - the majority of which have never been on public display. Many of the works have been sourced from the local community in Ashington, where the Pitmen Painters first formed in the 1930s. Of the hundreds of paintings they produced in their careers, many were either gifted to local people or sold to private collectors and so much of their work remains unseen. The unseen works include paintings by founding member Oliver Kilbourn and Ashington Group members Len Robinson, Jack Harrison, Jimmy Floyd and Fred Laidler. www.experiencewoodhorn.com

What’s in a name? It can often be difficult to separate a surname from a sense of identity and the feeling of being part of a family unit. Indeed many women have to tackle this issue when they get married. The decision being should she keep her surname or take that of her husband? This issue also affects women who are separated from or divorcing their spouse. Some feel strongly they wish to return to their maiden name, whereas others – particularly those who have been married for many years or have children – choose to keep their married surname as it is part of their family identity. In cohabitating families who aren’t married this can cause all sorts of headaches especially where family members may have different surnames. For example, take family holidays abroad; hitherto children could travel with their parents without question. But in recent years if you’re travelling to another country with a child and you are a separated parent travelling solo, or if you and the child have different surnames; additional documentation in the form of permission letters is now needed to establish your relationship by Border Control. The Home Office has provided useful guidance in this new age of scrutiny and suggests appropriate evidence may include a copy of a birth or adoption certificate showing the relationship with the child; a copy of your Decree Absolute on divorce or a copy of your marriage certificate if you are a parent with a different surname to your child; or the provision of a letter of consent
from one or both the child’s parents, confirming your consent to the trip. And what of those extended family members or family friends travelling with children who aren’t the parent of that child? A letter of consent from the child’s parents giving permission for the child to travel abroad with the person accompanying them should assist. This is often referred to as a Child Travel Consent form or a travel permission letter and it is a document that is used to allow a child to travel. Again the Home Office have devised a straightforward online template letter to assist. If the document is notarised, by a Notary or Solicitor, the authenticity of the document is guaranteed and should help ease Border Control if the minor is travelling internationally. But be warned taking a letter of consent won’t necessarily guarantee that your child will be allowed to travel abroad as each country has its own requirements for children travelling without parents, so best advice is to first check the specific requirements of the country you’re travelling to. And finally let’s not forget the teenagers travelling solo across Europe this summer on vacation schemes. If they can’t produce proper consent letters they may be refused entry. This nearly happened to my own teenage son as he returned home solo from a family trip to Nice. The airline hadn’t flagged it as an issue when the single flight was booked nor had I realised he would face such scrutiny as he tried to re-gain access into his home country destination. Who knew?

Dusty Springfield is a woman of musical legend. Iconic hair, staggering voice and life story worthy of a musical – ta dah! Dusty, the musical, comes to Theatre Royal, Newcastle, this summer with a songbook that is memorable, resonant – and pretty much timeless. For writer Jonathan Harvey, a key part of the show is Dusty’s influence on Motown in the UK. “She was so into the Motown singers and was doing a lot of gigs with them in America. But black pop artists couldn’t get arrested in this country; it would be British girls or boys doing cover versions of Dionne Warwick or other black artists’ hits. But Dusty presented the Ready Steady Go! Sound of Motown special, on the back of which the Motown artists did a big UK tour and started to have huge hits over here”, he explains. Dusty features many of the singer’s soulful pop hits, including I Only Want to Be with You, Son of a Preacher Man and You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me. Dusty was recently voted one of the most influential women of the last 100 years in a poll by BBC Radio 4’s flagship Today programme. Her 1969 masterpiece ‘Dusty In Memphis’ is considered one of the greatest albums of all time. Katherine Kingsley plays the title role and see actor, comedian and presenter Rufus Hound as Dusty’s manager Billings. www.theatreroyal.co.uk

UNTIL OCTOBER A summer-perfect exhibition, The Enchanted Garden at Newcastle’s Laing gallery explores how painters from Monet to Stanley Spencer have been inspired by flowers, greenery and outdoor space. From the Pre-Raphaelites and French Impressionists to the Bloomsbury Group and 20th century abstraction, artists have taken inspiration directly from the gardens around them. These secret, and sometimes mysterious spaces are seen through windows, in panoramas and often repeated in different lights and seasons. The exhibition features artists including Claude Monet, Edward Burne-Jones, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Beatrix Potter, Pierre Bonnard, Lucien Pissarro, William Morris, Patrick Heron, Francis Bacon, Stanley Spencer, Vanessa Bell, and Duncan Grant. Help with summer’s stress-points The summer holidays don’t mean rest and relaxation for everyone. Often, they can be a source of pressure, particularly for those ‘sandwich’ parents - looking after school-age children and an elderly or unwell relative - while they juggle their own working life. Sometimes there aren’t enough hours in the day to watch over everyone – and the thought of a holiday or break can bring its own stress – who’s going to look in on grandma when we’re away? Sally & Sarah offers care that is flexible and meaningful. We can step in to take care of the care on a long or short-term basis. We can support with informal ‘welfare checks’ so you can be assured that a relative will be seeing a friendly face every day. Someone who can call in, perhaps make a home-cooked meal, or ensure that medication has been taken. We are also on hand for companionship when you can’t be there – taking a client to the garden centre, choosing plants and helping them with some gardening. Taking them for a trip to the seaside for an ice-cream or just for a shopping trip.
Often people just want someone to chat to. There’s been a lot of publicity surrounding the so-called epidemic of loneliness amongst the elderly. The regularity of a familiar face calling in can be really important. We can offer continuity of care to cover a holiday period which can be ideal for a family who want to be reassured that there’s a watching eye when they are away. Give us a call and see how we can make a difference.

Gibside celebrates its most famous female custodian through a contemporary art trail. To commemorate a year of Women and Power, there will be two temporary art installations in the gardens at Gibside celebrating Mary Eleanor Bowes (1749-1800), the Countess of Strathmore, and her passion for botany. The Orangery Urns feature inscribed extracts from contemporary 18th century texts into the surface of the clay. Fiona Curran has created an architectural folly placed in front of the Orangery which is modelled on a Wardian Case, a container used to transport plants and seeds by ship. The folly is filled with startling artificial brightly-coloured plants. www.nationaltrust.org.uk/gibside

DO THIS saying there isn’t anything good or great going on now, it’s just that the sheer pace of things during that time was quite incredible. It was a time of many debuts, like Alexander McQueen in London and Tom Ford at Gucci. Christian Lacroix, Karl Lagerfeld and John Galliano were making couture relevant again and money seemed so plentiful to make productions bigger and slicker than ever before. Digitalisation has made the day longer! The expectation for fast and immediate means nothing can get left over until tomorrow. In Paris or Milan, we all used to be able to relax over an evening meal while the film was pushed through the lab. Now, we are all rushing around and meeting deadlines instead. I am not usually standing in the limelight... Receiving the Special Recognition Award at the British Fashion Awards was a proud moment. It was very nice that my award was introduced by Suzy Menkes, whom I worked alongside for 25 years at the International Herald Tribune. The other photographers were amused to see me arrive on the red carpet in my tuxedo - it gave them a bit of a thrill to see one of their own on the other side of the barrier! My favourite image is a tough call... but I think it has to be Catherine Deneuve congratulating Yves Saint Laurent backstage in 1992 at Paris Couture.
FASHION’S FOCUS >> Newcastle-born photographer, Chris Moore, is king of the catwalk having had a lens on the world’s fashion runways for more than six decades. He travels the world, but his retreat is in Northumberland’s Allen Valley. His iconic work is the subject of the CATWALKING exhibition at Bowes Museum which launches in July. Kathryn Armstrong finds out more about the man with the camera...
I was only four years-old when we left Newcastle... My parents left during the Great Recession in the late 1930s and the hope was that work would be easier to come by in London and the south. Many others were leaving for the same reason and, as immigrants do everywhere, past and present, Geordies stuck together and helped each other. The accent was all around me and much of the crack was about friends and places back home. It is a fascinating thing, that we moved south and Newcastle came with us. I remember the train journeys back to Newcastle and the anticipation and excitement from those heading the same way visiting family and friends. As a child, it was really noticeable that as we got closer the people became quieter and I would even see some tearful faces as they looked out over their home city. I think these memories are why I too get a lump in my throat as the train pulls in along the view of the Tyne Bridge. My love of photography... started with my sister’s Leica camera at the age of 12. I didn’t understand that it was such an iconic or expensive camera at the time. She was older and always really good to me. She let

me hande it and I enjoyed the magic of watching pictures slowly appear in the wet baths in the darkroom. My mother was born in Hexham... and my sister moved back in the 1950s. I would visit her and feel very much at home. The saying that “places are people” rings true to me; the people in the Allen Valleys, where I have a home now, are the reason why I am there and have been for decades. Work keeps one foot in London, but I am now in the north at least as much as the south and I have taken my archive there so that I can balance the work over both places. Photography and catwalks have changed a lot... In the beginning, presentations were small, intimate affairs - rather like going to someone else’s house for a birthday party or even, at times, a funeral tea! There was very little structure as to where you could wander or what you could photograph. The biggest change has been in the size of the productions. The typical handful of people at an event has turned into hundreds - even thousands - and the necessary marshaling of them means that everyone now has a label around their neck or wrist. That label tells you where you can and can’t go, what to do and what not to do. I miss the freedom; it’s
made it harder to find an angle and produce work different from everyone else. The decade of the supermodel was the 1990s... Before this, the models were mostly known only within the fashion business, unless you happened to be making the ‘people pages’ with a celebrity boyfriend, like Jerry Hall or Marie Helvin. In the 1990s, designers like Gianni Versace and Karl Lagerfeld recognised the need to have the higher paid advertising models walk their catwalks - it got them better editorial coverage in magazines and the newspapers couldn’t get enough of it. If Kate Moss, or Naomi Campbell, opened your show you were almost guaranteed tomorrow’s headlines. You usually know when you’ve got ‘the shot’... The curious thing is that often you think, ‘No! that’s all been hopeless!’ But the fates have aligned and the shoot turns out better than you think. I’m a great believer in relying on instinct and not overthinking the technical stuff - it frees you up to consider the subject, which, in my case, is always on the move. The catwalk was really exciting between the arrival of John Galliano in Paris, around 1990 and before the departure of Helmut Lang in the mid-millennium... That spans about 15 years, roughly speaking. I’m, of course, not
I love being outdoors in my garden... but because of the long trips abroad I seem to have to do a disproportionate amount of weeding! My love of Instagram means I now record more personal moments and I share them quite spontaneously with friends with my smartphone. I like the risk takers and the resolute... People who don’t mind staying out of the mainstream - without them nothing would change. My life is is not exactly normal... I do witness wonderful things at incredible places and it’s been going on for some time now. I was recently telling someone about the time when Elsa Martinelli taught me to eat spaghetti in Sicily during a Henry Clarke fashion shoot in the 50s and they said ‘Wow! Not everyone can say that’ and I thought, well no, I suppose not! I’m a touch underdressed, rather than overdressed... That’s possibly a very British thing. My favourite brands are Margaret Howell and Comme des Garcons. Bowes Museum curator, Joanna Hashagen, was inspired to put on the exhibition after seeing my recent book Catwalking... The book is, of course, picture-led, but it has a great account of the history of the catwalk as it unfolded during the time of my career. It was written by Alexander Fury from a series of interviews and conversations with me. The Bowes Museum has taken it a step further and brought together a number of garment loans from the great fashion houses. It’s an interesting idea that the clothes will be illustrating pictures that originally illustrated the clothes and it’s a terrific achievement to have brought so many huge fashion brands together for a single exhibition.

I am a family law specialist and my work is varied across a wide range of family issues. Often public perception is that a matrimonial lawyer only deals with the end of a relationship and the issues that generally arise such as divorce and sorting out the resulting finances. However, my work also encompasses situations where it involves parties embarking on new relationships and who are keen to preserve their current and future assets from the start of the relationship. This can be by way of entering into an agreement in contemplation of the parties planning to live together or marry/remarry. This may be because one party has come out of a failed relationship and is wary of entering into another relationship without preserving their current assets. Often though there are family assets which a party may have access to which he or she would wish to preserve for future generations or keep within their family. This can be where a party has a financial interest in a family owned company or farm for example. Also elder members of the family may refrain from wanting to make gifts to their children because they are concerned that if the younger generation’s relationship breaks down then those gifts may find their way outside of the family. These sorts of agreements have often been thought of as “cold” and “unromantic” but in this day and age where people are often more financially savvy it just makes financial
sense to set out what the intentions are at the start of a relationship so there are no surprises later. The agreements also provide for reviews upon key events occurring, eg the birth of children or after a specified period of time. Ultimately though, where there is a dispute over settlement of financial matters upon a relationship breaking down, the court is asked to consider whether the terms of the agreement are fair amongst other factors. It is, therefore, always sensible to take legal advice about your position and at least talk through what criteria is required to try to make such an agreement as effective as possible. It may save heartache later or not because I genuinely prepare these agreements as a precaution with the full hope that the parties do go on to have a happy life together. She will join the NELD event as it aims to raise substantial funds for North East charities. This year will NELD will be supporting JPC Community Farm, Neoangels and We Can Dance. GEORDIE CHEER >> Children’s charity, Barnardo’s, is the first to benefit from NE1’s Geordie Jackpot, the local lottery. NE1 Ltd’s Chief Executive, Adrian Waddell, presented a cheque for £1,500 to the charity which will be used to develop an activity programme that aims to build the emotional wellbeing and confidence of some of Newcastle’s most disadvantaged through arts, cultural and leisure experiences. The money was raised from the sales of Geordie Jackpot tickets, a weekly local lottery NE1 Ltd launched last year with the dual aim of raising cash for worthy causes and helping fund projects in Newcastle city centre.
WE CARE >> Newcastle-based Malhotra Group plc has chosen Age UK Gateshead, Age UK North Tyneside, Age UK Northumberland and Age UK Sunderland as its nominated charities for 2018. The charities provide a range of services for older people, making them natural partners for Malhotra Group, whose residential care division, Prestwick Care, owns and manages 12 care homes in the region. The Group plans to raise money with charity collections and events and work with volunteers from the Age UK to offer information and advice to residents and their families.

KIND HEARTS >> A generous donation has transformed a disused hospice sitting area into valuable care space, because of the kindness of a family touched by its work. Wynyard Park Ltd’s Chief Executive, Chris Musgrave, and his mother, Mary Musgrave, made a £50,000 donation to Alice House Hospice in Hartlepool in memory of the late Joe Musgrave. The money has allowed Alice House to fit two new bedrooms for patients with life-limiting illnesses. Chris, Mary and Chris’s son Joe, officially opened the new patient rooms at the Hospice, to commemorate his father’s dedication to the organisation. Chris said: “Dad was a long-term supporter of Alice House Hospice. As soon as I heard the plans I knew this would be the perfect way to remember him. The rooms will always be there and will be a lifelong memorial to Dad and everything he did for the Hospice.”

FEEL-GOOD FUN
Getaways for good Holidays that help raise charity funds – a new organisation matches good causes with good times
For most charities, the donation of a holiday can be the prize of a lifetime when it comes to fundraising. A place in the sun, a stylish city break or an adventurefest for a family – they can reap rewards running into thousands of pounds for deserving charities. Chances are – if you’ve been snapped at one of the charity balls on our Luxe Looks pages – you’ll have been a participant in some kind of auction or raffle for just this kind of prize. Fledgling organisation, Charity Escapes, based in Newcastle, has been established to marry the two, encouraging more charitable donations and making sure the most amount of money possible is raised for charity and that donors are given full acknowledgement for their generosity. Charity Escapes was set up by Jeremy Middleton - a well-known North East entrepreneur and philanthropist. A man not unfamiliar with charity balls, sportsmen’s dinners and the like, he set up Charity Escapes (CE) as a non-profit-making endeavour to make it easier for businesses to be part of a charity transaction, with CE carrying out all the administration and matching charities and prizes to maximise the amount of money raised. Jeremy set up the business with Rick McCordall as its Project Director. “What we know is that many charities appeal to big hotel chains and smaller hospitality businesses for prizes,” explains Rick. “We say to the hotel, if you get such a request, pass it on to us – or tell us what you can offer and we will find an event that we think it fits. “It is a case of matching donated prizes with charities and their fundraising events. We take care of the admin and maximise the value of the donated prize. “Since September last year we have helped raise nearly £100,000 and, ultimately, Jeremy wants to raise a huge amount for it to be sustainable. “We will have the prizes that are real ‘headline’ grabbers’ and we will know which event they work at for the maximum amount raised. But we will also be able to work with smaller charities and smaller donations to make sure everything fits”, he adds.
We want to hear from holiday homeowners, hotels and holiday agents who are able to donate time in their properties for the benefit of good causes

>> L-R Katie Johnson, charity account executive, Rick McCordall, project director, Carly Sells, donor relations manager
Carly Sells is Donor Relations Manager for Charity Escapes. She manages the ‘pot’ of prizes and works with companies who want to make donations as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility, such as Hilton NewcastleGateshead, Malmaison and the Small Luxury Hotels group. She will ensure that from the charity’s side, the donor organisation, or group, gets acknowledgement on publicity material and through social media, as well as relaying monies raised at the event. Locally Charity Escapes has worked with CHUF, Tiny Lives, The Percy Hedley Foundation, Calvert Trust – and many other charities of all sizes. Examples of donated prizes included £900 raised by a silent auction for a Cottages in Northumberland weekend break and £4,700 raised in a live auction for a three-night stay at Nobu Ibiza Bay at a £250-per-ticket charity dinner. Small Luxury Hotels of the World are on board for 2018 and, as well as providing Marbella, Ibiza, Riga and Tallinn destinations, can now also offer charity breaks in Marrakech and an unrivalled ski lodge in the Sierra Nevada.
This follows a successful programme in 2017 where donations from SLH helped raise £42k for 20 different charities in just four months. The CE team organises the post-event administration for the winner and the businesses involved, making it easy for both parties. For 2018, Carly is keen to hear from charities and hospitality organisations who can help boost the range of events and good causes during the year. Locally, the charity has support from Lord Crewe Arms, Hilton Newcastle Gateshead, Malhotra Group, Hotel du Vin, Week2Week, Peace and Loaf, Marriott Gosforth, Durham, Sunderland and Metro. Adds Carly: “There is no cost to the charity or hidden charges – we want to hear from charities, but also from holiday homeowners, hotels and holiday agents who are able to donate time in their properties for the benefit of good causes.” For more information contact Carly on 0191 3037837 or carly@charityescapes.com www.charityescapes.com @charityescapes

KATE WICKHAM Kate Wickham, 35, heads up the UK division of Team Valley-based family business, Gate 7. The business has just been awarded the Queens Award for Enterprise International Trade 2018. As MD, Kate, who has been with the company since 2005, heads up a team of 44, supplying decals and vehicle livery worldwide to Bobcat, Volvo, Komatsu and JCB. Kate was brought up in Sunderland and is now based on the Quayside Newcastle LUXE PEOPLE >> My family! We love spending time together and we are always laughing and having fun. We are very close - they’re my favourite people. LUXE PLACES >> For a weekend > My sister and I compete in endurance vintage car rallies in a 1948 MG TC known as ‘the little blue MG’. Spending the weekend with fantastic people, racing round the Alps on the Alpine Trial, or the Highlands in the Flying Scotsman, is a perfect adventure. A long holiday > I have always wanted to visit Patagonia in South America. The beautiful mountains, glaciers and lakes have massive appeal, with tons of options for hiking, climbing, canoeing and biking. It has the makings of a true adventure. A treat > I love London. I think it has
24 www.luxe-magazine.co.uk
something for everyone, from the shops, restaurants and nightlife, to museums, galleries and theatres. A weekend with the girls would be an amazing treat and, of course, we would throw in an afternoon in the Mandarin Oriental spa, followed by Afternoon Tea! LUXE RELAX >> Best food > Of course, I have to say my mam’s food is the best - as long as she doesn’t burn it! No one can cook for our massive family better than she can. Her fillet of beef with dauphinoise potatoes is a real treat when shared together with the family. Best wine > I like really dark reds. A family friend is a real wine connoisseur and he taught me everything I know and love about good wine. Favourite restaurant > I think Peace and Loaf in Jesmond is a great restaurant for a
culinary treat. The service is outstanding, with beautiful food and cocktails to boot! Perfect weekend > Time spent with all my friends and family in the Lake District. The weekend would mostly consist of long walks, rock climbing and mountain biking. It’s a place I’ve visited many times, but never get bored of. Ideally the sun would be out, however that is wishful thinking! Best telly > I’m a massive fan of Peaky Blinders. I love the 1920s fashion, the cars, the music and the attitude. It has it all! Best book > A good friend lent me Lynn Hills’s ‘Climbing Free’ and, after five years, I still haven’t given it back. I must have read it ten times! Lynn Hill is a rock climbing legend, who has shown immense resilience and strength to push the boundaries and smash the glass ceiling in such a male dominated sport. Best sounds > I love live music and have had the opportunity to see some great artists in great locations, like Beyonce at Glastonbury, Elton John at Raby Castle and the Rolling Stones in Pittsburgh. LUXE SHOP >> Best shopping city > New York is the most amazing city for shopping. You can find some great brands that are not available in the UK and if the exchange rate is on your side, you can grab some bargains. Favourite shop > Sephora in the USA is out of this world! It’s top of my list when I’m across the pond. Luxe retail treat > I could lose hours in Liberty in London. It is the most beautiful department store. The beauty hall is home to some really unique products and brands and I adore visiting. Best buy > In 2013 I bought myself a limited edition Belstaff leather jacket. It was an
impulse purchase that spent up my whole Christmas bonus. It is really unique, but very classic, and I absolutely love it. It’s also really versatile and is getting better with age, - definitely an investment piece that I can dress up or down. I literally wear it anywhere and everywhere, from evenings out to endurance car rallies! LUXE PARTY >> A memorable night out > My brothers were competing in the Snow Bike festival in Gstaad last year. Gstaad is an absolutely beautiful Swiss town in the mountains and probably the most glamorous place I have ever been. On the last night of the event we all went up to the Gstaad Palace for cocktails, fondue and champagne, then hit the cosy bars of Gstaad. It was an unforgettable night in beautiful surroundings. Perfect party > My sister’s wedding was an absolutely epic party, in the beautiful setting of our parents’ garden, with everyone looking gorgeous. Her husband is Irish, so the party was big and lasted for four days - a big act to follow that’s for certain! Best dress > As a finalist in the NECC National Business Award, we were invited down to London to the V&A for the awards evening. I wore a floor-length red Valentino dress that made me feel very special. I felt like a movie star! Dinner date > Café 21 is gorgeous and I’d have cocktails at the Botanist first. Very relaxed, but great service and lovely food. They don’t rush you and it’s tucked away and comfy, too. YOUR LUXE THING IN LIFE >> Pitching up at my mam and dad’s for a good catch up. There’s nothing more luxe than family.

BIG DAYS
LIVING IT UP Varsha Sehgal on royal dates and glitzy destinations
THRILLED BY >> Less than week after their fairytale wedding, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex made their first public appearance at Buckingham Palace for a garden party, held in honour of HRH Prince Charles’ 70th birthday and I was honoured to be invited to this wonderful celebration. The day was gloriously sunny and there was a real sense of excitement among the guests to meet the newest member of the royal family. People from all walks of life had come together from different parts of the country with the common thread of a shared association with Prince Charles and his charities. People thronged to the royal tents, which were buzzing with life as everyone met and chatted over fruit punches, tea, sandwiches and delectable little cakes, each with its own royal crest! The little “bee blip” in Prince Harry’s speech was a perfect reflection of the informal and joyous spirit of the day.
>> Cannes
TRAVELLED TO >> The South of France is synonymous with glamour and glitz. While the palm-lined promenade, with its grand French Art Nouveau architecture, upscale boutiques and restaurants, is impressive. The cobbled streets of “old Cannes” are where the soul of Cannes is found. This is my quintessential Cannes. Stay: The Majestic, InterContinental Carlton and Martinez are landmark hotels. Not only do they share a prime location, they also provide the best in luxury and service that Cannes has to offer, whether that be a state-of-the-art gym, luxurious spa or Michelin-star restaurants.
26 www.luxe-magazine.co.uk
Dine: Day > BFire - a beach restaurant at the Majestic hotel, with wood-fired cooking, to create some of the best grilled fish and meat dishes. Lunches are leisurely and peoplewatching is a real sport here, so I would recommend booking a sunbed, preferably on the private jetty. La Colombe d’Or - a short car journey away is this unmissable restaurant located in the village Saint-Paul-de-Vence. Many an artist (including Picasso) have left their legacy on the walls of this rather homey establishment, which serves traditional French food with impeccable hospitality. La Guerite Sainte-Marguertie - this is a firm favourite. Situated on a rocky cove on a little island of its own, accessible only by a water taxi, this is what the French Riviera is all about; fine wines, excellent food, beautiful people and jaw-droppingly beautiful surroundings. Baoli Beach - besides the music and party vibe, the sushi here is a huge draw. Night > Le Maschou - a meal here begins with a huge basket of raw vegetables and boiled eggs followed by a tray of grilled meats accompanied by the most perfectly baked potatoes! An old and elegant provencal restaurant in the heart of old Cannes. Le Petit Mason - this restaurant traces its roots back to Nice, where the original restaurant still continues to serve fine French food, albeit with an obvious Italian influence. Palme d’Or - with panoramic views of the bay and two Michelin stars to boot, this restaurant at the Martinez is the perfect excuse to get dressed up for an evening of exquisite food and wine. Baoli - this place always gives me a sense of being in a tropical forest. Perhaps the most popular nightspot, the party carries on until sunrise. Whether dancing on tables is your thing or not, Baoli is unmissable for its fantastic food and vibe. Michelangelo - located in Antibes, oozing effortless elegance, the food here is served with absolute finesse. Though no stranger to big names, every guest is made to feel very welcome. Restaurant Alain Llorca - another gem in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, this restaurant boasts spectacular views. Dine overlooking the valley as the sun sets. Do: Cannes is in excellent proximity to Antibes, Nice, Monaco and Saint Tropez. All of these are accessible by car or ferry which makes it quite easy to discover and enjoy the beauty and allure of the French Riviera. Smaller villages, like Eze, Beaulieu-sur-Mer, Frejus, Saint-Raphael and Saint-Paul-deVence are delightfully quaint with a medieval charm. For a physical challenge, the dramatic Estérel Mountains are breathtakingly beautiful. Gambling isn’t my thing, but there are several casinos for anyone seeking the thrill of the dice. Personally, strolls up and down the Croisette, whether window shopping or people-watching, is my favourite pastime
>> La Guerite
>> Antibes
in Cannes, preferably with an ice cream in hand! TASTED >> There is no doubt that Bamburgh is the jewel of the Northumberland coastline. A picturesque village with an imposing castle, pristine beaches, natural sand dunes and serene surroundings, this is somewhere nature lovers and families flock to especially in the summer. It is dotted with several small eateries offering seriously good grub and the Potted Lobster is perhaps the most noteworthy of these. Renowned for its fresh seafood, the restaurant is elegant with a seaside appeal and sticks to doing classics like a haddock chowder, potted lobster and larger and lemon battered fish simply, but well. Prime beef, lamb and vegetarian options, accompanied by a chalkboard of specials, garnished perfectly with generous desserts, makes the menu well-rounded and considered. The wines available marry well with the food on offer. Across my family of five, we had a taster of several dishes and were in agreement that our favourites would
have to be the salt and chilli squid, potted lobster, crab arancini, whole lobster and truffle and parmesan chips. TEMPTED BY >> I am someone who is always on the move and finding comfortable footwear that looks as good as it feels, while multitasking as smart-casual, isn’t always easy. More an obsession than a temptation, is my enduring love for the Hermes Oran sandal. The brand launches new colours in different leathers every season and over the years I have lovingly added to my collection, which have served me well from beach to boardroom. The latest Blue Oran in the Epsom calfskin is a super wearable addition and since epsom is the most hardwearing of all Hermes leathers, this sandal is an investment-worthy temptation!
TRIED ON >> Micro-needling is all the rage in the beauty industry at the moment. The science behind it recognises the skin’s ability to renew itself by producing collagen to plump the skin. Recently, I tried the Premier Cru Facial at Rockliffe Hall, which incorporates micro-needling as part of the treatment. New to this technique, I was sceptical but having tried it, I felt it instantly made a noticeable difference to my skin. I felt tiny pricks of needles as the therapist used a roller over my face and though there is no actual breaking of the skin, the process allows the products that are applied to be absorbed more effectively so they are more potent.

SHADES OF SUMMER
STYLE SWIPE Preparing for a beach getaway? Here’s my guide to those poolside essentials you should be packing Let’s talk swimwear. From Heidi Klein to Seafolly, you’ll find that this year’s must-have style is the one-piece. I’ve selected Melissa Odabash’s gorgeous navy costume, complete with stunning gold detailing at the top. This classic style is simple and chic, but the tie-up feature gives it a playful side too. It’s perfect for relaxing by the pool and keeping cool - with a cocktail or two! For headwear, this year’s rule is the bigger the better – something that comes in handy when you’re trying to protect your face from UV rays. I have chosen a raffia hat by Nooki with white edging. This material is really popular this season and, if you don’t fancy a basket bag, choosing a hat in this fabric is another great way to wear the trend. Eyewear should be near the top of any holiday packing list and I just can’t resist these stunning Prada shades. Don’t forget that sunglasses will probably be your most worn item on any holiday, so it’s worth investing in the right pair. I’ve accessorised the outfit with a pair of Russell & Bromley’s white leather sandals. The statement gold rings pick out the detail on the swimming costume and a matching bright white Michael Kors backpack. Backpacks are so useful to have on holiday; whether you’re just trying to get through the airport, or exploring new cities, you’ll find that you can fit just about everything you need in one of these handy little bags. Finally, consider taking one of Aspinal’s beautiful leather travel wallets. With space for documents, currency and, of course a passport, they are the only way to be organised in style. Catherine Newton is Head of Womenswear at Fenwick Newcastle.

CURLY GIRLS
Hit the waves At the turn of the year I predicted that we would see a lot more fun looks with curls, waves and natural-looking hair. Hey presto! Summer 2018 is filled with super cool, low maintenance looks, full of natural bends and waves. The good news is you don’t need to be blessed with a naturally wavy texture to master this season’s look - and you can rock this trend on most hair lengths, too. This new crop of wavy hair looks has taken Hollywood by storm, with A-listers like Jennifer Lawrence, Gigi Hadid and Katy Perry all sporting the look. It’s all about an understated coolness,
44 www.luxe-magazine.co.uk
with less of the ‘glam’ volume, in favour of flat waves and a naturally tousled texture. If you’re blessed to have a head of waved-out natural tresses, then we recommend wave enhancing products allowed to dry naturally, then slept on (yes you heard right - slept on.) Unless you do sleep aerobics, then you should wake with perfect flat waves that simply need shaking through. Schwarzkopf Professional recently launched a product range called ‘Mad About Waves’ which helps create this look perfectly. For those who need a little more help on perfecting the look, we recommend using a flat styling iron to create the perfect flat waves. It’s pretty simple. Taking
random sections create an ‘S’ bend within the hair and use the styling iron to heat into shape. Also from Schwarzkopf Professional is ‘Mad About Curls’ which comes in both a cream and a spray and is a great way to perfect the look. From Oribe styling we recommend the ‘Apres Beach’ spray, which adds the perfect texture and feel to your finished look. These looks definitely scream ‘summer’ and will keep you looking super cool on those gorgeous hot days. Beach anyone? MOUTH MATTERS WITH ONKAR DHANOYA

Onkar Dhanoya is clinical lead and principal dentist at Honour Health, providing NHS and private dental care and skin treatments at three practices across the North East - Jesmond, Stanley and Ponteland. Onkar, who has more than 30 years of dentistry experience, sits on the board of the Faculty of General Dental Practice and holds a fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons (London).
SPOTLIGHT ON TEETH WHITENING >> Are you considering getting your teeth whitened this summer – perhaps in time for a wedding? Teeth whitening is undoubtedly a very effective treatment, and can provide you with a great confidence boost for those all-important wedding photos, but it’s important to do your research beforehand. Did you know, for example, that anyone who carries out teeth whitening is legally required to be a dental professional registered with the General Dental Council? If they’re not a dentist, or a dental hygienist, dental therapist or dental technician working under the supervision of a dentist, then it’s illegal for them to carry out the procedure. Practitioners in beauty businesses and hairdressing salons are not qualified to carry out teeth whitening, and there is no guarantee that it will be carried out safely. In fact, it could even lead to lasting damage to your teeth and gums. At Honour Health, we thoroughly examine your teeth and gums to establish whether or not the treatment is suitable for you, before explaining your options. We offer a choice of in-surgery teeth whitening or at-home teeth whitening. For the in-surgery option, we use ‘Zoom!’ - a 45 minute bleaching process that lightens the discolouration of enamel and dentin - during which time you can relax and read or listen to music, before leaving the surgery with a whiter smile. Alternatively, we offer the option for you to whiten your teeth in your own home. We’ll manufacture bespoke bleaching trays to fit on your teeth and gums, apply your first treatment, and show you how to continue whitening independently. Bear in mind that the whitening effect won’t last as long if you smoke, or drink red wine, tea or coffee, which can all stain your teeth. Not sure about teeth whitening? We also offer our signature hygiene package, Honour Diamond Airflow, which is a state-of-the-art treatment, featuring an Airflow machine that cleans and polishes the teeth with a mix of water, compressed air and fine powder particles. It’s hugely effective for gentle stain and plaque removal and is ideal for implant patients, orthodontic patients, smokers, those who have veneers, crowns, bridges and sensitive teeth. Our patients love it as a stand-alone treatment to reveal a brighter smile, and also as a pre-whitening treatment to achieve even better teeth whitening results. Book a free consultation at www.honourhealth.co.uk or call your chosen practice below to see how we can help you to achieve a brighter smile this wedding season.

GIN THING
Perfect tonic
The UK’s first gin-inspired spa lifts the spirits with its new range of tipple-tastic, tailor-made treatments, as Jessica Laing discovers… There isn’t much that a gin and tonic can’t fix. The same goes for a really good massage - the kind that kneads away knots and, somehow, manages to melt away a week’s worth of tension in the space of 30 oily minutes. So, what do you get when you put the two together? Well, exactly what you’d expect - one very relaxing ride. It appears those clever Scots have answered what I’m sure are many people’s spa prayers; a serene sanctuary, based in the Merchant City area of Glasgow, in which gin and pampering come together as one. From the guys behind the city’s chic cluster of Gin71 bars, it’s a brand new spa concept, guaranteed to have the country’s beauty and gin-lovers bubbling with excitement; treatments are solely dedicated to the botanicals found in gin and guests are treated to complimentary fizz (gin-infused, of course) throughout their visit. Don’t get me wrong: the idea isn’t to have you slurring your words or tumbling down the stairs in a tipsy, post-massage haze. The therapists here help banish headaches - not cause them. Together, you create a bespoke spa journey
48 www.luxe-magazine.co.uk
that’s tailored to you, using JustBe Botanicals’ signature products - all of which are hand-crafted and 100 per cent natural. Consultations begin with a simple question: how would you like to feel?
Treatments on offer range from fullbody massages to reflexology, signature facials, and luxury manicures Need perking up? Then you might be offered treatments showcasing energising, mood-lifting ingredients such as bergamot and lime, clove and eucalyptus or zingy pink grapefruit, while sleepy souls are dealt more calming herbs like lavender and cedarwood. And if you fancy a bit of a detox, there are also treatments that celebrate the likes of juniper and geranium - two of nature’s most

balancing antioxidants. Treatments on offer range from full-body massages and hour-long head rubs, to reflexology, mini and signature facials, and luxury manicures and pedicures if you’re after a little maintenance work. After a soothing cuppa and an in-depth consultation, it’s a case of letting your nose pick your aromatherapy oils (and toner if you’re opting for a facial) and surrendering to a juniper foot soak, or a foot cleanse, made wonderful with toasty hot mitts. Treatments, which can last from 30 minutes up to an hour, come to a close in the most perfect way; with an ice-cold G&T from the drinks trolley, water if you want it, and even a few squares of devishly-dark chocolate taking pleasure levels to the max. And if you’re wanting to make a day of it, or

have something to celebrate, be sure to have a nosey at the spa’s collection of impressive packages. There are around eight to choose from; all tempting thanks to a range of added extras, thrown in to make your experience as memorable as possible. Things like Afternoon Tea, washed down with a glass of prosecco and a G&T, and arrival cocktails, followed by a five-course, gin-inspired tasting menu, at nearby Gin71. Whichever one you go for, or however long you choose to stop by and pamper yourself, one thing’s for certain: if you’re a die-hard gin fan in need of escape, this place is just the tonic. Denise Welch seems to have spent a lifetime ‘bouncing back’ from adversity but she’s in a good place these days. Kathryn Armstrong met up with her at home in Cheshire as she prepares for Calendar Girls in Newcastle this autumn
A QUIETER LIFE It’s the morning after the night before. Something that once meant lurid tabloid exposés in the world of Denise Welch, but today the social media meltdown in her house is for someone else. The frenzy surrounds the release of a new single by The 1975, the hugely successful band fronted by Denise’s son, Matt Healy. It was given first play on Radio 1 the previous evening to great acclaim and Denise’s ‘proud mum moment’ involved posting a video of herself on social media dancing round the kitchen. Cheers mum. Some 66k views later… So this is Denise the mum. In her words, “doing no more than all those working mums; spinning a million plates, juggling loads of balls and hoping you can catch the odd one.” There are plenty of versions of Denise Welch, who turned 60 this year, and today the ‘homebody’ is playing vinyl in the kitchen of their Wilmslow home and making a bacon sandwich for 17-year-old Louis who just happens to have that day bagged a part in the latest series of Vera (he’s also recently finished a film called Sometimes, Always, Never with Bill Nighy). Sounds like a starry house but nothing could be further from the truth. There may be awards on the tables, rock star magazine covers framed on the walls – and a who’s who of celebrity photos in the downstairs loo, but above all, it’s a place of safety for this tight-knit gang. “There are big nights like last night”, says Denise. “At the end of the day Matt’s just my little boy and having a famous mum is something that he’s used to, but I think he crosses his fingers and hopes for the best when it’s something like this – but I just can’t resist joining in”, laughs Denise. “Because so many of The 1975 fans follow me I feel I’ve got to give them something as well – so I play along with it, but I know what lines not to cross. I think that he’s glad that my drinking days are over.” For sure. Once Denise’s headlines were there for all the wrong reasons. Some car-crash moments that
50 www.luxe-magazine.co.uk
were the result of a well-publicised battle with depression which led to self-medication with drink and drugs, and subsequently acres of column inches and lurid tabloid headlines. Told by one weekly women’s magazine editor that, ‘her misery sells’, the likelihood is that even six years sober and living a relatively abstemious life with her also sober husband Lincoln Townley, she won’t shake off the past. As she says, what goes on Google stays on Google. But she gives not a jot. Today Denise is in a good place, though her mental health struggles are never far away. These days she’s able to manage her condition, ‘endogenous depression’ and lay some perspective on the past. It’s six years since Denise and Lincoln stopped drinking – they met one another in a nightclub at 6am (“I wouldn’t have been there if I wasn’t in such a dark place”), and went through the journey to sobriety together. “I look back on the person that I was for a time and I feel sorry for that person. There are different Denises and that is the one I feel sorry for. I do really. Sorry for who I became and I feel grateful that meeting Lincoln meant we found our way home. “I wrote a letter to my 16-year-old self for a mental health magazine and I said alcohol took me down a long, dark road and it’s very difficult to find your way home. “Meeting Lincoln who was on another dark road meant we managed to do it together but it’s not just us. It is the ripple effect it has on everybody who loves you.”
Readers will know of course that Denise was married to actor Tim Healy. Today they remain friends and near neighbours – and share the stage for the popular Sunday for Sammy fund-raiser on Tyneside. She says their previous home was a ‘bit of a rock n’ roll house’, but says: “Matthew said, ‘you know mum, if you hadn’t been a bit rock n’ roll then I wouldn’t be who I am today’. “I’ve ticked all the rock n’ roll boxes and I’m quite happy to have a cup of tea and a crumpet nowadays.” An attitude which makes her perfect casting for a role in the musical Calendar Girls, which is of course the story of Rylstone WI’s bare-all calendar (of which more overleaf ). It’s a nationwide tour which will see Denise back on her favourite stage, Theatre Royal, Newcastle. She hopes her Geordie fan base will come and see the heart-warming show. Her dad still lives on Tyneside and she thinks of the place as home, visiting regularly. Calendar Girls was a big decision for her, especially after the row over her departure from a high profile panto in Newcastle at Christmas. Denise says she was fired rather than walking away from the show as its production company claimed. “It all contributed to me being very poorly, it was a terrible time. People still think I walked out.” Denise is ever candid about her on-going illness. Her honesty about her mental health is one of the things people most relate to. “Depression is the owner of me”, she says. “When the unwelcome visitor decides to visit I just have to be confident in the knowledge that he will leave again.” She made the acclaimed short film Black Eyed Susan about mental illness, with Louis playing a character with depression. “Ninety per cent of the time my life is wonderful but unfortunately that visitor will always make unwelcome calls. It’s not always related to events. When my mum died I was emotionally traumatised but I didn’t get clinical depression. “When I was on the beach in Grenada in January >>

BARING ALL with the waves lapping on the shore, my wonderful husband, palm trees and a golden beach, my depression came on and you have to wait for it to lift and to leave. I manage it and I have a wonderful support system in my family and I am much kinder to myself than I used to be. “If I can remove anything from my diary that I can, then I will. I’m very much the show must go on and I will push myself to not let people down. “Usually my episodes are short lived but I did have a breakdown after Christmas which was the first in ten years.” She is a great advocate of self-care and admits to ‘sloth-days’. “Although I have a very busy life and not one day is like another, I have days where I get up, I will lie on the sofa and I will watch real-life crime all day! “I’ve taken the guilt out of it. I think it is self-preservation and I think it is also my mind telling me to recharge mentally as well as physically. I don’t have a problem taking lots of holidays because I know that for nine months I’m going to be on stage daily.” August will also be when she releases a second novel, The Mother’s Bond which is set in Byker and Chester le Street and which, according to the actress who has voiced the audible version is, a “Catherine Cookson for the noughties”. Denise admits she doesn’t find the writing
weight back on. My motto is; if I can do it in my mid 50s then you can do it too.” Life may be sober but it is by no means dull. There’s a box of newly delivered wine in the hallway, alcohol-free from The Dry Drinker. Partying doesn’t stop, it’s just different. “If I did a book now it’d be pointing out the joys of sobriety without being the drink police. A lot of people think you won’t be funny again, go to a party again. “I pick and choose where I go but if there’s a party I’ll go for a couple of hours and when the tide turns and everyone starts getting drunk I’ll slip out the back door and not one person will know or care. I get everybody at their best.” Denise and Lincoln spend time in LA where the early nights and non-drinking culture suits them. Lincoln’s work as an artist is flourishing and Denise is excited to be returning to the stage. One real regret about her partying past is that she is remembered for antics off stage rather than on. “Because my life has been ‘out there’ a lot of people forget that I am actually good at what I do as a job and that’s why I’m looking forward to doing Calendar Girls. Winning the MEN Theatre Award for Little Voice was one of my greatest achievements because it was a ‘grown up’ award. process easy but loves to tell a story and write about what she knows. “For my first biography, a publisher came to me – they knew it would be sex, drugs and rock n’ roll. It was a time of my life where they offered me a lot of money and I was fed up of the press telling my story. Little did I know at the time I was being hacked by Daily Mirror (for seven years). “That first book was a big success, my life was out there. I did a second book called starting over but I felt I hadn’t started over. “I’m really pleased with this latest book, I love writing about the North East.” The book, Calendar Girls and even a return to Loose Women mark a life busier than ever for Denise at 60. “if there’s anything that people ask me on a daily basis it is how have you done it? Stopped drinking, smoking, not put the

what I do?’” The Calendar Girls tour promises to be the icing on the cake for a great year in this Wilmslow household. “Matthew said to me, let’s be the family that smashes it in 2018!” So we’ve found the version of Denise that she’s properly settled in to. The woman who at 60 is confident on stage, a respected charity advocate, LGBT champion – not to mention happy to pose in a bikini and leave the heavy makeup behind. “I am not obsessed about being a size eight. I’m a 12 and happy. I will have two days a week on 600 calories and eat normally the rest of the time. I post bikini pictures because if one person says they were feeling down about themselves then saw a picture of me and felt better then I’m happy – I will be doing it until I’m 90!”
Pencil it in Kathryn Armstrong caught up with Calendar Girls co-creator Gary Barlow and the cast on the WI’s home territory in Yorkshire. It’s the sunniest day that the Yorkshire Dales can summon, showing the glorious countryside at its absolute best. Sun beats down on pretty Burnsall but it’s the imminent arrival of one Gary Barlow that’s getting this normally sleepy village hot under the collar. A vintage bus, photography lighting kits and film crews suggest this is not your average Monday morning. So too does the abundance of middleaged women sporting black frocks, pearls and sunflowers. They are the Calendar Girls, real and fictional – and this is their home territory. Among their number are the ‘stage’ girls including Denise Welch, Fern Britton and Ruth Madoc. They dash about in character, comfortable with the puzzlement of tourists and locals baffled by the carry on. The ‘real’ Calendar Girls are no strangers to the spotlight – it is 20 years since they created such a stir with their then audacious idea to pose for a risqué nude calendar to raise money for a settee for their local hospital. The calendar and its subsequent success have raised a breathtaking £5 million for the Bloodwise charity, and made these WI cheerleaders global superstars of a kindly sort. They’ve been portrayed on screen by Helen Mirren, Julie Walters and Celia Imrie. Today they are meeting up with the latest team who will bring Calendar the Musical on its regional tour from August. Gary Barlow is here for a photo session with the girls along with Tim Firth, his lifelong song-writing friend. Together they’ve created the hit musical Calendar Girls, inspired by the true story of these WI ladies. A musical comedy showing how a group of ordinary ladies achieved something extraordinary. But it’s not all cream buns, innuendo and big laughs as we see during a preview of some of the show’s songs back in the village hall. They tackle the story’s very essence – the loss, sadness and loneliness that lies at the heart the calendar’s beginnings. In the sunflower-laden village hall, the cast and the original girls are joined by Gary and
Tim to talk about the production. This new tour has been tweaked to create a tighter show says Gary: “I know Andrew Lloyd Webber’s still tinkering around with shows that have been on for 30 years. I think that as time moves along, the audience experience changes as well. People want different things from shows.” Looking back at the process of writing the musical Gary recalls: “Everyone always said to me ‘don’t do a musical’, so when Tim came to me and said ‘do you want to do a musical?’ I said ‘no, no, it’s going to be a nightmare.’ He said, ‘no, it doesn’t have to be. If I feed you some lyrics, write some music, over time we’ll get it.’ “But, very cleverly, very early on we came to this village hall, and I can’t tell you how much it all made sense once I’d been in this room and met the girls.” Denise Welch is delighted to be one of those ‘girls’. “I love Gary Barlow”, she laughs, “he’s lovely, just gorgeous.” “There are some people who are so precious about their work but with Gary if you came to him about something and said I’m not happy, he’d just say ‘don’t worry – we’ll change it.’” Never a musical leading lady, Denise says, “I am an actress who can hold a tune. I knew Gary and Tim wanted the songs to come from what’s happening in the play and that’s what appealed to me – also, one of my late, great friends Lynda Bellingham was stalwart of this play.” Denise will play Celia, a spiky former air hostess who admits to having had a boob job – Ceila Imrie’s ‘bigger buns’ role if in the film version. But baring all holds no fears for Denise. In Burnsall she met the ‘real’ Celia who told her; “I’ve always wanted you to play Celia – you’re very naughty like me”, laughs Denise. Tapping in to your body intelligence Your body is so much more than the vehicle that carries your head to meetings, or the thing that enables you to complete the tasks you need to get done every day. It’s a super powerful machine with amazing capacity and it’s the key to your true intelligence – the source of rich data, such as intuition and emotion. Having a strong connection to your body will tell you lots about how you are. This will always help you feel better, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. Connecting deeply with what your body wants you to know will teach you about what you need in any given moment and over the course of a lifetime. A really tuned in relationship to your body can also deepen your spiritual connection. The body is a window in to your soul - it knows everything about you. Your whole life story, even the stories that came before you, are imprinted in every cell – woven in to your DNA. With every breath you take, you have the potential to know yourself better – the answer to every question you’ve ever asked lies inside your very being. Yet, our approach to somatic (or body) intelligence and to mental health and wellness has, here in the west, become purely focused on understanding and asking questions of the mind. Yes, the mind is a place where we can process the answers to the big questions, but it’s not where the answers themselves necessarily reside. So, when was the last time you listened to your body? I mean really, really listened? I invite you to get curious about what your body is telling you. To notice the patterns. To ask what it wishes you to learn. Stop pushing aside the niggles and the physical pains, because they’re trying to speak to you. They want you to know things about where you’ve come from, what you need and who you are. Your body, mind and soul will thank you for it. Here’s a practical exercise you can try that will enable you to get closer to your body intelligence – it’s called ‘body scanning’. • Sit comfortably, upright, or lie on your back. • Close your eyes. • Breathe comfortably. • Bring your attention to one end of your body (head or feet) and ask yourself ‘how does it feel?’ Pay attention to any physical sensations. Notice stiffness, heat, pain, comfort, and so on. • Observe any emotion that arises. Don’t try to change anything – simply enquire. • Move to the next part of your body and do the same. • ‘Travel’ through your body and notice what you notice, taking ten minutes or so to complete. This is something you can easily integrate in to your day-to-day routine. I often do it while I’m travelling on public transport. It’s also great to do while you’re sat in the car waiting to pick the kids up from school, or as you fall asleep at night. Enjoy the exploration. Laura x
We’re talking to people with a positive attitude to mid-life, doing things differently, changing their pace of life, their priorities, reflecting on what’s gone before and the new opportunities and challenges to come Dr Gill Owens, 52, is a principle lecturer in the Business School at Teesside University. Last year she represented the UK in the World Transplant Games after she became an altruistic kidney donor.
I used to do this…
All things business – from leaving school until my first ‘retirement’, aged 38.
Now life is about… Doing a job I love. I decided to do a degree for fun and am now a chartered psychologist holding a Principal Lecturer post in the Business School at Teesside University and I cannot imagine doing anything else. I love having a positive impact on the students’ lives and not just imparting my academic knowledge and sharing business experience but helping them to develop a sense of humanity. We’re only on the planet for a short space of time, we need to be kind to it and all who share it.

The biggest change I have made is donating a kidney to a stranger in March 2015. My late sister-in-law Anita received a kidney from her husband, my brother. I saw the difference that made to her life. We got our old Anita back for ten years before a non-kidney
related cancer took her. I just wanted to do the same thing for somebody and it didn’t matter at all that I didn’t know them, they were somebody else’s Anita. I had a four-and-a-half-hour operation to remove my left kidney and it was taken by courier to Liverpool and transplanted into somebody who had been on dialysis for ten years. After a series of anonymous letters sent via our transplant coordinators we agreed to meet. Rose has six children and nine grandchildren but none of them were a match so she was incredibly grateful. We will be friends forever and my left kidney has definitely been on more holidays in the last three years than my right kidney. There are too many people waiting on a kidney in the UK (around 3.5k on the waiting list), I just wanted to make a difference and I did.
Family is all about…
Love, kindness, fun and laughter. I lead an incredibly busy life and my family suffers because of my commitment to my job and the students but the only way I can do what I do is because of the support I receive from my family. I truly love them all.

BE INSPIRED
I’m lucky I can… Make a difference through my work; share good and bad times with friends and family; live a life knowing I am supported with my dreams and ambitions. I could go on and on, I have so much to be grateful for.
I’ve got time for…
Positivity. I know it’s a cliché but we cannot change what has happened to us but we can choose how to react to it. I want to surround myself with people who are kind and show compassion. Stop with the negative rhetoric, it’s boring.
Things are different because… I made them different, I took control and chose not to be the person that things happened to but the one who makes things happen. If you don’t like something change it or walk away. Times might be difficult but we are really, so very, very lucky compared to many others who share the planet.
A day in the life of me…
Up at 5:30 arriving at work at 7am. My day is made up of delivering lectures and seminars, holding one-to-one meetings with students, answering emails (so many emails!), meetings with a variety of colleagues about a variety of different things. Home at 7pm. Evening meal with my husband, play with the dog, house related stuff, bath, bed. Repeat. It sounds average but no two days are the same, there is always something that takes the day in a different direction, I love that. Weekends are for sharing with wider family and friends; fresh air, nice food and a small beverage or two!
The people who are important… Those who understand and don’t judge. People who
support me and share my ambitions, those who wipe my tears when I am sad because I have heard about cruelty in the world. Anybody who can make me laugh until my sides hurt.
Work/life balance…
STYLE lazy days
I struggle with this because I am so passionate about my job. I returned to work weeks after the donation because it was at a time when students were writing their dissertations and I know how stressful that is so I wanted to support my particular group of students. My family know that I am there for them if they need me, but they get me and understand that I need to be fulfilled at work, it’s what makes me the person I am.
I thrive on…
A new challenge. Last year I represented GB & NI at the World Transplant Games which was held in Malaga. It was the first time that donors had been allowed to compete so I chose the 100 meters sprint as I was a sprinter at school. I trained for an hour before work three times a week for seven months. It was hard but I was determined to do the country proud. The University paid for me to attend and I also got a huge amount of support from the sports team at the University, I will be eternally grateful. I came home with a silver medal and wonderful memories of making new friends and being welcomed into the Transplant Sport family.
Mid life means to me…
Being confident, far more than I ever was when I was younger. Yes I had less wrinkles then but really, who cares about that. I can’t take the credit for this quote but it sums up where I am now in life – “Just be kind and brave, that’s all you ever need to be”.

This edition of Little Luxe is decidedly 80s flavoured. Think Toffos, Golden Cups, Banjos and Terry’s Pyramint – yes my mum has told me all about the long-lost sweet stuff of the ancient past and I have to say it makes my taste buds tingle! I’m not sure if it’s down to my friends’ continuing obsession with all things Stranger Things after watching season two on Netflix, or if it’s because it’s the theme of my school summer performance this year, but the 1980s seems to be taking over my life right now. And it’s no bad thing. I love the music of the 80s. We’re learning the words to Eternal Flame and Friends Will be Friends in choir at the moment. I love the brightly coloured crazy fashions that could be worn by boys or girls. I love the sci-fi slant of the 80s, the way everyone seemed to have psychic powers and an ‘anything is possible’ attitude. Or is that just in the movies? Either way, I’m channelling my inner 80s this summer. Love Nina x

I can’t believe I’ve lived at the seaside my whole life and it’s taken me until the grand old age of 10 to sign up for surf lessons. We’re always on the beaches of South Shields, watching people doing all kinds of sports on the sand and in the water. Recently lots of our friends have been telling us about the brilliant sessions run by South Shields Surf School for kids and their grown-ups so I had to give it a try with my mum and sister Rosie. The pesky weather had other ideas however… Thick sea fret rolled in just as we started to do some warm-up exercises. The lovely instructors kept us busy with fun games on the sand but the mist wasn’t going anywhere and we had to postpone our class. I couldn’t believe how warm I was in my wetsuit by that point and how much we all wanted to throw ourselves into the North Sea! Not to worry, a bit of sea fret won’t put a stop to my surfing career – I have the bug now! At the time of writing I’ve just warmed up with a hot chocolate and I’m checking my diary for my next class. Watch this space – I’ll be back on my board very soon!

SHOWTIME
ON THE HOOF with Deborah Smith Roll on the rosettes. Summer means competition time...
Well, the summer is well and truly here and there’s plenty happening - at last! Oli and Strider have both been out and about and we’ve made several weekend away trips to competitions further south and in Scotland and managed to pick up some hard-earned rosettes, so it feels all worthwhile. One of the highlights of the regional eventing calendar is the Bramham Horse Trials, near Wetherby, which attracted over 60,000 visitors this year in glorious sunshine. What a difference the wether makes in this country. The horse trials is a three-star level international event and hosts three classes: CCI*** senior, CCI*** British Under 25 Championship and CIC***. A host of other arena classes are held alongside the main event. These include British Show Jumping classes, hunter and young stock classes, plus a stallion parade. Julia Krajewski show-jumped clear to take the Equi-Trek CCI3*. Julia and Chipmunk FRH had two fences in hand, but they rode a textbook round and she finished the winners with 8.6 penalties in hand. Izzy Taylor and Be Touchable won the CIC3* and Emily King and Dargun landed the U25 CCI3*. A special mention to my friend Filly-May Sams, who took her young show jumper, Rocco, there for his first trip to a show of that size and in the main ring. No rosettes

At the lovely Kirkley Hall, the students had done an amazing job and the XC fences were dressed with flowers and vegetables - it was like a mini Blair horse trials with its up and down twisty track. We had such fun on the cross country; I was still grinning that evening.

Pampered pooch The sun is shining bright and so is Alfie’s summer diary. School’s out for summer, the family are at home and there’s plenty of fun for our pooches to sniff out this season. This means more walks, summer soirées and lazy evenings spent roaming the gardens. Our Luxe pooch is catching up with Pepper the perky puppy from County Durham before she pulls her passport out for a trip on a riverboat in the South of France. Alfie is also helping her pack her poochy suitcase with pretty pink accessories from our friends at STYLETAILS and Teddy Maximus. It’s beer garden season and to ensure you’re making the most of the great outdoors with your furry-friends, Alfie is picking out his top poochfriendly pubs to relax and unwind with a tipple or two. From coastal gems and country hideouts to village boltholes and city hangouts, there’s something to suit every dogfriendly day out with the whole family. Here’s to another summer of fun with our four-legged friends of the North East. Alfie, your luxe pooch x

Her cross breed characteristics have proven to be a very challenging combination for her human parents Adrienne and Michael, who live in County Durham. Pepper is always full of fun and can’t wait for the next adventure.
LUXE WALKS >> I need lots of walks as it helps me focus on what I’m told to do. Apart from early morning and tea-time walks, I have my Aunty Jo who calls in daily. We always have fun as I’m very easily distracted with anything that moves, whether it walks, runs, or flies. My nose is often working its way along the floor picking up interesting smells or the odd clump of grass. POOCH’S PERFECT DAY OUT >> If I could have a lie in on the human bed, this would be a great start to the day. The best part of the day would be somewhere to run off the lead until I’m tired enough to come back. A trip to the local pub would would follow, allowing me to get some extra attention with the proven technique of lying on my back promoting tummy tickles. Home to bed and snuggle time. Doggy dream time. DOGGY DOWNTIME >> Downtime doesn’t really agree with me.

I will fight the urge to rest or sleep in case I miss something. The only thing that really works is a nice log fire which is guaranteed to knock me out for some hours. I do like a little power nap after a walk with my favourite blankie. HOUND HABITS >> I can’t turn away the opportunity of a stray tissue, sock or flip flop and can often be found being chased around the house by both parents after claiming one for myself. I am a puppy and that’s what we do. If I can’t find one of those delicacies, a piece of coal or a log will also do. PUPPY PAMPER >> On sunny days I like to take over mum’s hammock and bask in the sunshine getting fed ice cubes to keep me cool. I’ve mastered getting in and out myself after some initial attempts that were apparently quite amusing to others.
DOG’S BEST FRIEND >> Jess is another family four-legged friend and is a Lurcher cross. She is an extremely fast runner and I try to keep up constantly without success. She’s just moved to the South of France and is now living on a river boat in the canals. I’m just waiting for my passport to arrive as we are hoping to visit this summer for a catch up. FONDEST DOGGY MEMORY >> On my most recent expedition in the VW campervan we stopped at a beachside site in Galloway. A sunny day at low tide on the Solway Firth meant there was sand as far as my eyes could see. PUPPY A-LISTER >> I’m only a puppy, so I don’t have an A-lister just yet. My mum and dad think perhaps Cesar Milan. I’m not sure who he is!

BON VOYAGE
ISLAND LIFE Hip hotels with Debrah Dhugga Ile de Ré is where the Parisians head for the summer. Tres chic.
I just love to have an escape to France and wow, is this a gem. Villa Clarisse is a pretty perfect smidgen of paradise located in the heart of Ile de Ré. My fleeting weekend visit lived up to all my expectations, and then some. Just let yourself inhabit a chic French film set… and, action! THE VILLA >> Gorgeous classical design with a contemporary vibe that’s all about that breezy style of lime-washed walls, paintings and exposed wooden beams and bricks. You can’t help but be wrapped up in the calm atmosphere of the villa and then the lovely town – with locals riding bikes, fresh bread being baked, fresh oysters and wine stalls. And, marvellously, not a car honk to be heard! ROOMS >> Home to five suites and four rooms, Villa Clarisse is an elegant and exclusive luxury retreat within easy reach of the beautiful
harbour and the island’s many attractions, and is well-suited to couples, friends and families. All rooms are light and airy with whitewashed walls with modern designs and fabrics. The Premier room was my home away from home for the weekend and boy was it dreamy! Plush pillows, air conditioning, a heavenly king-sized bed and stunning views overlooking the grounds’ patio, a former convent, with a perfectly landscaped garden. You are at the heart of nature – and not in a Chelsea Flower Show way! This setting was so harmonious within the landscape, especially being solely overlooked by the local church bell tower. The image of the green of the garden really stood out to me against the villa’s sand coloured façade and calm neutrals of the villa. Suites can be rented individually which gives the hotel a real homely B&B feel and restaurant facilities can be used in the neighbouring five-star sister property, Hotel de Toiras.
60 www.luxe-magazine.co.uk
RELAX >> Villa Clarisse doesn’t have a spa, it has something better! Guests can choose from a treatment list, and then your very own private masseuse will help you to relax and unwind in your room. Of course, I treated myself to an all body massage and with the terrace window open and the cool French breeze sweeping in; I even found myself drifting off! Aside from this, a quiet read on the sun lounger by the pool left me totally switched off - which is a difficult task I can tell you. OUT & ABOUT >> For the more active travellers, there is plenty to do when visiting Villa Clarisse. Explore the nearby fortress, Vauban, endless bicycle trails around the island, shopping in local markets, sailing excursions, picnics arranged by the Villa Clarisse team, and donkey and horse riding. For wine lovers, like myself, a visit to the Bordeaux region has to involve some grape action. Château Clarisse, Villa Clarisse’s vineyard is two hours away in Saint-Emilion, and it truly is a must-see.
Established in 2010 in one of Bordeaux’s most illustrious wine growing areas, Château Clarisse produces some world class wines. Wine tasting, lunch and return chauffeur driven (wise move) transfers are included in the package. Other attractions nearby include two beautiful golf courses, including the nine-hole course at Les Portes en Ré and an 18-hole course at La Rochelle. For families with younger children, nearby activities on the mainland include La Rochelle Aquarium, Palmyre Zoo and Le Puy du Fou, a wildly popular amusement park where the whole family can discover European history in rides, shows and re-enactments (this place was the inspiration for the Kynren spectacular). FOOD >> In the evening I headed over to La Table d’Olivia, the restaurant at Hotel de Toiras, which is a charming and intimate dining room. The menu is simple and authentic and adapts to seasonal fresh regional produce which I love. Inspired by the
local market, the hotel staff lent me a wicker basket so that I could choose the ingredients for my tailor-made meal. The options are endless and you can enjoy your meals as you see fit whether that is in the dining room, garden, terraces or bedroom. Alternatively, there is a fully functioning kitchen in the villa where you can order light meals or hit the market and cook up supper with fabulous produce. Picnics can be made up to enjoy on the property’s grounds or by the seashore. Hampers range from simple but classic charcuterie, fresh breads and goat’s cheese to more luxurious seafood platters and oysters.
Factbox I flew to La Rochelle which is about 20 minutes from the property. From there I booked transfers which cost €60. Room rates at Villa Clarisse start from €210 / £187 per night for a superior room. Breakfast, lunch and dinner is purchased separately. www.villa-clarise.com

BIG SKIES
We find an honesty box for payment and a little heated cabinet which has warm pasties and pies to sustain you for a big walk.
B R E AT H E E A S Y The Outer Hebrides ranks as one of the happiest places to live in the UK, which might have something to do with blissful blue waters, acres of white sand and breathe-easy big skies. Kathryn Armstrong finds a home in Harris
Admittedly the weather was our friend when we experienced the remote isle of Harris. Easter brought snow to the North East while we basked beneath soft sunshine rays on a wee piece of paradise. And returned evangelical. Truly. The location is other worldly yet gentle; remote but embracing. If you love to escape, to adventure, to discover culture or eat well, Harris delivers. Here’s how... BEACHES & BIG SKIES >> South Harris is home to some of the best beaches in the world which really do make you gasp. Luskentyre, Seilebost, Northton and Scarista offer up miles of the softest white sand - and blue water that spans the paint colour chart – from gentle turquoise to the deepest indigo. You can wander for miles - and then some. There are craggy rocks to clamber, rock pools to ponder, dunes to discover and views that make you go a bit teary with their awesome (in the real sense) natural wonder. At every turn you discover a new vista – and a definite edge of the world, perspective-gathering feeling. No wonder artists love this place. CRAFTS & CULTURE >> Harris, as we all know, is home to Harris Tweed. It has an authentic artisan heritage
62 www.luxe-magazine.co.uk
and there’s a new generation (hello waistcoat-wearing hipsters) coming to love the fabric’s story and the history of the cloth; yarn spun in Harris homes and dyed in shades that you realise are totally in synch with their surroundings – blues from the water, earthy tones from rocks and land and heathery pinks or striking gorse yellow inspired by local fauna. In the town of Tarbet you can mooch among the looms and buy fabric from the roll – there are dozens of colours and designs to choose from. See demonstrations of weaving and an exhibition of the craft. There’s a shop selling Harris Tweed items and The Visit Scotland shop in Tarbert has good collection of crafts from makers across the island to buy. Harris is an obvious magnet for artists, and small galleries pepper the island – especially the craggy and other-worldly east coast which is a huge contrast to those vast beaches elsewhere. Stop off at Skoon Art Café in the marvellous sounding hamlet of Geocrab to see original oil paintings by resident artist John Craig. The gallery is a cosy scone-and-soup hangout, too. Holmasaig Gallery really looks the business – a clifftop gallery with canvases on the wall but also lined up by easels. Definitely a working studio. A converted church is home to Mission House Studio – an incredible space in itself just to linger, listen to music and view the work of
photographer Beka Globe and ceramicist Nickolai Globe. FEEDING & FEASTS >> What’s very apparent on Harris is that good produce matters when it comes to food. The land and seashore provide an abundance of fish, meat and vegetables - and people with the intent to show off to their best. You won’t find fast food, in fact the opposite – islanders embracing the ‘slow food’ movement.
Never is this more apparent than in the small and very beautiful hamlet of Northton which overlooks dunes, sands and lagoons. It is home to Croft 36. A must-visit spot. A serve-yourself shack with fabulous home-made treats. There’s an honesty box for payment and a little heated cabinet which has warm pasties and pies to sustain you for a big walk. You will also find pre-prepared dishes such as fish pie, Mochair wild rabbit stew and dumplings, crab quiche and fish curry to sort you out post-walk. Northton is also the place to find The Temple Café, a squat stone building with stunning views and tasty wood-fired pizza, great salads, soups and cakes. The Hebridean waters supply the freshest hand-dived scallops you’re ever likely to eat. We had a plateful at The Anchorage, in the village of Leverburgh, which was our home in Harris. This restaurant, unassuming from outside, like many, served up great seafood – the best ever seafood linguine – as well as fish and chips. If you’re in the mood for fine-dining, then Scarista House makes a good destination. It’s a small hotel with much-awarded, well respected food – and views overlooking Scarista beach. Communal pre-dinner drinks, then a set menu, served at one sitting. Expect exceptional produce such as prawns and fillet of Aberdeen Angus, as well as local cheeses and homemade treats like wheaten bread and dreamy butter. Before we even got to Harris we encountered The Seafood Shack at Ullapool, right by the ferry terminal. You smell it before you see it. A bit of a Riley’s Fish Shack kind of place – perfect shellfish ‘to go’ – a mound of freshly caught langoustine served up and eaten by the harbourside – and those hand-dived scallops making an appearance. Cullen skink and garlicky crab claws also delicious. And of course the gin thing. The Isle of Harris Distillery is newly-opened in Tarbert. Run by a young family team, the impressive building hosts distillery tours and tastings

– and has a good café (parsnip and honey soup – yum). The USP of Harris gin, as well as a gorgeous swirly bottle design that represents the sands of Luskentyre beach, is the addition of sugar kelp which is hand-harvested by a local diver from the underwater forests of the Outer Hebrides. ADVENTURES & ANIMALS >> Depending on when you travel to Harris, there’s much to see in terms of wildlife. Take rib boat trips to explore the shores to seek out seals, basking sharks, puffins and bottlenose dolphins - maybe even orcas. You’re never far from a herd of Highland cattle and, of course, this is ideal birdwatching territory where you can spy gannets guillemots, shags and kittiwakes. Head for North Harris Eagles Observatory and see if you can spot golden and white tailed eagles. In terms of activities, this is super paddleboarding and kayaking territory, with gentle inlets and a spectacular coastline. Plenty of surfing options and a spectacular golf course at Scarista.

STAY & SLEEP >> We stayed in Leverburgh, which is an hour’s drive from Stornoway, in Ardview, pictured above and far left, a newly-renovated house which sleeps ten people. The house is owned and was renovated by North Yorkshire businessman, Alun Pearson, who is passionate about the isle and the local community, spending as much time as possible there. With three ensuite bedrooms including an impressive mastersuite with drench shower room on the ground floor, it’s an ideal place for an all-age family stay or a gathering of friends. Sonos sound system, large communal kitchen and boot/kit space mean it’s a convivial space in a good village setting. The house is perfect for explorers – be they on foot or on water. It’s close to good beaches – Northton in particular. It’s also an easy waterside walk to the aforementioned Anchorage restaurant.

If you’re making the journey to the Outer Hebrides by car then you need some comfort. Hundreds of miles stretch ahead, even from our starting point in Edinburgh. You’re heading to what seems like the top of the world. And then some. We took comfort, literally, in the luxurious surroundings of an Infiniti Q70 for this northbound road trip, a journey definitely memorable enough to tick the road trip box. The luxury model looks slick, low and swoopy. Its grown-up looks and engine growl make it a powerhouse of a vehicle ready to take on the miles through the Highlands and beyond in some style. The car definitely has eye-catching luxury looks and took to the A90 out of Edinburgh with ease and ambition, facing a 212 mile ride to Ullapool without fuss. There were four big people in this marriage of mountains and miles, so the comfort levels in this exec vehicle were always going to be tested to the max. Without doubt they passed. The rear interior space was somewhere for even the longest of skinny-jean-clad legs to sit back in with ease. Deep leather seats offered comfort and support and the drop-down armrest was an ample resting place for devices, earphones and Percy Pigs, the pre-requisites for any journey. The cabin is made for comfort with great visibility and easy navigation, which are two of the big things you’re looking for on a journey that takes in open roads and big views. For once we weren’t clock-watching, other than the race for the ferry, but the clock on the dash was always worth a second glance for its retro styling. Any road trip requires a soundtrack, and open highways always lead us to Pat Metheny whose sounds shared the wilderness journey perfectly, booming out from the Q70’s mighty Bose speakers. On the road the Q70 offers decent grip and control, with the diesel engine smooth, refined and delivering a reasonable punch. It really loved the long empty roads through a landscape taking in the Cairngorm mountains topped with snow and plenty of whisky distilleries for the non-drivers, among them The Glenlivet, Eradour and Dalwhinnie. All have tours – and the Q70’s boot space is ample to store a case or two. We headed to Ullapool and the ferry to Stornaway. There’s always an art to settling a big car in to the bumper-to-bumper lanes on a compact ferry, so this was where the Q70’s tech came into play to great effect. Front radar and cameras and extensive parking sensors made it easy to judge distance and space and settle us for the two and half hour ferry journey to our isle destination. Which we arrived at in the dark. Really dark skies territory here – amazing clarity and star-gazing perfection. We faced an hour’s ride to the village of Leverburgh. Roads are good, but we’re definitely talking remote. The car felt secure and managed the twists and turns of what, in daylight, we realised were roads that hugged beaches and rocky pools. The Q70 was a great friend for our time on Harris, which definitely boasts a landscape of contrasts. You have to leave the car behind to explore vast swathes of pale sands and swooshy dunes – but the more rugged east side of the island turns moonscape with roads implausibly channelling through rocky outcrops, past pre-historic looking pools and gaping crags. This is a test for any car and you need plenty of time – certainly worth it when you turn a corner to see a colony of seals on rocks just a few feet away! Q70 loved Harris, from its spectacular sunsets to fabulous distilleries – and was perfectly happy being parked up in paradise as we hiked off. Cellar-brations The depths of the Yorkshire Dales might seem an unlikely place to stumble upon the ultimate champagne experience, but the canny secret’s in the cellar…
Champagne is about luxury, decadence and extravagance. Words that don’t immediately bring Yorkshire to mind. But the charming, award-winning Yorebridge House hotel has managed to score a massive coup in bringing the prestigious champagne house, Laurent-Perrier, right to the heart of Yorkshire and the tiny village of Bainbridge. The hotel has become home to ‘The Laurent-Perrier Grand Siècle Tasting Room’. A private tasting and dining room created in an exclusive partnership with the famed French champagne house. It’s a hugely exciting venture for hotel owners, Charlotte and Dave Reilly, marking a real high since they embarked on their journey to convert and transform the historic Grade II listed Old School and Headmaster’s House, dating back to 1850. Today, Yorebridge House is up there with the best in the country when it comes to accommodation as a multi-award winning restaurant with rooms. The launch of the Laurent Perrier tasting room is the exquisite icing on an already fabulous cake for the couple, who opened their doors in 2008 undaunted by the fact that they had not had any previous experience in the hospitality world, or that the premises itself had no previous history for hospitality or food. The collaboration with the famed champagne house reflects the success of the partnership Yorebridge House and Laurent-Perrier have enjoyed since the hotel opened. “We had felt for a long time that our wine cellar would be an ideal space to convert into a dedicated tasting room. It seemed the perfect partnership to work together with Laurent-Perrier”, says Dave. ”It has been quite a journey, from drawing
JUL/AUG18
up the plans, to the actual completion. It’s an old building dating back to the 1850s, so we weren’t sure what we would come across. And there were quite a few challenges to face with the structure of the building, not least getting a beautiful, bespoke and rather large Italian marble table top down the narrow stairs! “But the end results are way beyond what we first set out to achieve. We are absolutely delighted and know that our guests will love our very special, exclusive Laurent-Perrier Tasting Room.” The room itself is a tasteful and stylish conversion, offering private dining for up to ten people, who will have their own dedicated staff, and specially-designed menus, with champagne pairing for each course on the menu. For David Hesketh MW, managing director, Laurent-Perrier UK, the tasting rooms is an exciting venture: “Champagne LaurentPerrier are delighted that our continued partnership with Yorebridge House Hotel sees the opening of the dedicated Grand Siècle Room. The transformed cellars of this marvellous boutique hotel boast a unique atmospheric space in which to pair the great champagnes of Laurent-Perrier with The Dales’ finest cooking.” The project signals the start of another stage in the development of Yorebridge House, namely the conversion of The Barn into very stylish and grand selfcontained accommodation. The Barn is set in the beautiful hotel grounds and will be completed by the end of the year. It will be named ‘The Alexandra’, in honour and recognition of one of the daughters of the family of Bernard de Nonancourt, Alexandra Pereyre de Nonacourt, the initiators of the LaurentPerrier style and range.

MOUTHWATERING MOSCOW
CHEF’S TABLE with James Close, two Michelin star chef at Raby Hunt From Russia with love See & Do Moscow >> Danilovsy Market Showcasing the area’s gentrification – loads of little eating places and delis serving cooked food. Russian Ballet A visit to see the Bolshoi ballet will hit the wallet – but the theatre itself is one of the city’s main sights and worth a visit. The Underground Moscow’s Metro is so much more than a transport system. It’s a symbol of Russia’s power and history. One of the most visually stunning underground systems in the world.
Twins Garden
Moscow is maybe not the first place on your list of gourmet go-to spots, and while it isn’t part of the Michelin awards, its restaurants do take their places in the World Top 100 rankings. Not sure how many football fans will have their thoughts on fine dining as they hit the city for the World Cup, but there’s certainly an inspiring food scene if they’re prepared to leave McDonalds behind. For me, it was fascinating to go somewhere which genuinely does have ingredients you might never have seen, eaten or cooked with before. These days, most chefs can access most ingredients, but some of the food we ate in Moscow – notably the amazing Kamchatka king crab – was a first, and blew our minds. The crab comes from a Russian peninsula on the Bering Sea – and essentially is the king of crabs with beautiful sweet white meat. It was definitely a highlight of eating in Moscow. We feasted on it at Wine & Crab, owned by a chef I’d met in Italy. They served up ten different varieties of crab. Apart from well-loved Kamchatka king crab and opilio (snow crab), we tried blue king crab, spiny crab and even the bizarrely-named “hairy crab”. As well as the spiny stuff, Wine & Crab offers other kinds of seafood and perfect wines alongside. This was without doubt one of the best meals I’ve eaten. Another fantastic restaurant was Twins Garden. The twins in question (who also run Wine & Crab) are Ivan and Sergey Berezutskiy, who are Russian chefs. They have worked in some of the world’s finest kitchens. They offer a unique and very naturalistic approach to cooking – they have a 125-acre
66 www.luxe-magazine.co.uk
farm two hours south of Russia. This means they have access to fresher ingredients than ever before. In the restaurant itself, an aeroponic fruit and vegetable system makes Twins Garden completely self-sufficient. The new restaurant also has the largest wine cellar in Russia and a laboratory on site, where you can actually dine too. We ate some stunning food here from an outstanding tasting menu. From their farm we ate cheese made just 24 hours before – they have rare breed goats for milk – served with a pesto made from 100 different herbs. Just one of a raft of stunning dishes from a really creative kitchen. Moscow is also home to White Rabbit which ranks at 23 in the World’s 50 Best restaurants list. Chef Vladimir Mukhin uses local, seasonal ingredients and, as for his charisma, Mukhin has hit the headlines on the 2017 series of Netflix’s Chef’s Table. The restaurant embraces an Alice In
Wonderland theme – think lots of rabbits and rococo furniture. But on the table you’re going to find traditional Russian produce like borodinsky black bread with caviar and standouts like rabbit and mini cabbage rolls in foie gras with potato crisps and truffle juice, as well as roast suckling pig and Black Sea oysters. Be sure not to be late for your very important dinner date. It’s worth a visit for the view alone. The restaurant’s glass dome provides diners with a spectacular 360-degree view of the striking city of Moscow. We stayed at the Ritz Carlton, which was as impressive as you’d expect. Very old, traditional and opulent – not unlike the Ritz in London. It has an impressive rooftop bar overlooking Red Square – which was closed when we were there because of a Victory Day parade – but we were able to watch the trundling tanks and massed troops from this great sky-high vantage point, which was definitely memorable.
Shopping Russia’s main department store, the Moscow GUM is an architectural ‘wow’ and home to a variety of high-end boutiques. Built between 1890 and 1893 and known as the Upper Trading Rows until 1920, the legendary store is now home to over 200 boutiques from Dior to Zara. En route We flew to Moscow from Heathrow and on the way stopped off in London to eat at HIDE, the bold new restaurant and bar in Piccadilly. Billed as one of the biggest new openings in the city, it was opened by Hedonism Wines and Ollie Dabbous; it has an incomparable wine list. Any bottle available in the Mayfair store may be reserved and delivered to the restaurant for you to enjoy alongside your meal. We had a Chablis premier cru Montee de Tonnerre brought over – the best Chablis in the world. Magnificent.

GRILLS & SPILLS
FISH COURSE
Swordfish skewers with Herb Oil, Sesame Crusted Rare Tuna & Grilled Tiger Prawns
WITH TERRY LAYBOURNE 68 www.luxe-magazine.co.uk
When we think of a BBQ burgers and sausages always spring to mind, but we often overlook the potential of seafood. That’s often because it can be daunting to cook. But it is easy to enjoy a full-on seafood feast this summer; fish and seafood are ideal for the grill and they don’t generally require long cooking times. In fact fish cooks very quickly on a hot barbeque. The tip is to use the best quality seafood and to ensure your grill is really hot after the flames have dampened down. This helps caramelize the fish and provide those beautiful grill lines that give you
that immense flavour. At Saltwater Fish Company, we’ve made it easy for you with a range of grill-ready seafood that you can pick and mix on the fishmonger’s counter, including swordfish skewers with herb oil, sesame crusted tuna, monkfish and chorizo skewers, Thai-style shrimp cakes, prawn skewers and miso salmon.
Method Make sure the seafood is at room temperature before grilling. This will allow the fish to cook evenly and prevent it from sticking. Our chefs at Saltwater will help by giving you the optimum grilling times too. After grilling, make sure you give your fish
adequate time to rest. About 3-5 minutes will do the trick. This will allow the juices to run back into your fish and keep it tender. We always recommend having lemon wedges and Maldon salt to finish and enhance the flavour.

BERRY-LICIOUS
Berry good news

One of the best things about summer is spending hours at ‘pick your own’ fruit farms.
<<
As fabulous as in-season strawberries are on their own, here’s a recipe that creates a beautifully indulgent dessert partnership. Steve Lawford, head chef at Chadwicks Inn, Maltby delivers the kitchen magic while wine expert Lee Tolley discovers the best summer rose to enjoy alongside it.
Summer pinks Rosé Spumante Brut “Le Dolci Colline”, Venezie, Italy NV 95% Glera, 5% Brachetto ABV 11.5%
White Chocolate Mousse, Locally-Picked Strawberries and Lemon Balm >> Serves 4-6
Ingredients 225g double cream 75g whole milk 2 leaves bronze gelatine 4tbsp water 2tbsp x glucose syrup 150g x white chocolate Locally picked strawberries Lemon balm
Up until 2009, the Glera grape variety was known as Prosecco, and it used to make all Prosecco. So it’s no surprise that this wine has a lot of similar characteristics to Prosecco. It’s dry with a light sparkle and delicate summer fruit flavours. A great pink alternative to Prosecco.
Château L’Ermitage Rosé “Auzan”, Costières de Nîmes, France 2016 50% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 25% Mourvèdre ABV 13%
Method In a bowl, whisk together the cream and milk to soft peaks. Store in fridge until needed. Steep the gelatine in cold water until soft. Heat the water and glucose in a saucepan until boiling, then mix in the drained gelatine. Bring to the boil again then pour over white chocolate in a bowl until melted and smooth. Fold the chocolate mix through the cream and milk mix and combine until smooth. Pour into a container or serving bowls and chill in the fridge for 3-4 hours until set. Garnish with some beautiful local fresh strawberries and lemon balm and enjoy! www.chadwicksinnmaltby.co.uk
A fantastic southern Rhône rosé. Dry with a touch of mineral crispness. It has a taste of strawberries and raspberries without being too fruity. A wine to sit in the sun with, that also screams “summer is here”!
Laurent-Perrier Cuvée Rosé, Champagne, France NV 100% Pinot Noir ABV 12%
With its distinctive curvaceous bottle and pink label, this is probably the most famous of pink Champagnes. A fantastically delicate sparkle and a wonderfully fruity nose. Full fruit flavours with strawberries and cherries really making an appearance. A world famous Champagne that everyone will appreciate.

UPCOMING COURSES @LINNELS FARM INTRO TO BEEKEEPING WITH NORTHUMBERLAND HONEY CO. >> SAT 14 JULY
Summer is an abundant and happy time at Linnels Farm...
Smørrebrød (pronounced ‘smuhrbroht’ but Danish open sandwiches to you and me!) came to Linnels Farm courtesy of Danish chef Trine Hahnemann and Hexham Book Festival. These mini works of art combine at least three of the flavour components: sweet, sour, bitter, salty and umami, and then require eating with a knife and fork. You can make the most of any small harvest from the garden or simply include leftovers from last night’s dinner. Recipes for Baby Broad Bean & Cottage Cheese, Cod & Potato topped with Radish and Beef & Crispy Onions can be found in the brilliant new book Open Sandwiches by Trine Hahnemann. This tome is so much more than the name suggests with a whole section devoted to recipes for the different breads, meatballs, fishcakes, not to mention various mayonnaises, pickles and rémoulade (not the celeriac kind). If you get as inspired as I did then please get in touch because Trine has promised to come back over and run a cookery course here with us at Linnels Farm.
BETTER, NOT BUTTER, BEANS >> I’m talking about growing better beans using ‘root trainers’ – sounds like something you use to coax a toddler to conform or perhaps by the dentist as a preventative for braces! Beans, and indeed peas, all belong to the legume family – basically any of those plants that produce long pods containing seeds. Legumes resent root disturbance and therefore transplant better if they are grown in long root trainers which ‘air-prune’ the root tips and stop them from growing round in a circle; once roots start circling they can
70 www.luxe-magazine.co.uk
continue even once planted in the ground. These root trainers open up like books and can be reused numerous times. All legumes fix nitrogen: they utilise bacteria in nodules on their roots to make use of nitrogen in the air for the benefit of the plant; in return the bacteria get food via the plant photosynthesising – true symbiosis. Nitrogen is the main plant nutrient often in short supply since it leaches easily from the soil via rain. Once the peas and beans have finished cropping simply cut the plants off at the base leaving the roots to rot down into the soil and release the nitrogen back for use by the following crop; hence why brassicas crop follow peas/beans in crop rotation.

Seasonal ingredients were stars of the show at a gourmet Supper Club at Marco Pierre White Steakhouse, Newcastle
Chef Paul Amer is a veteran chef on the Newcastle scene. He more than knows his way round a robust ribeye or a delicate slither of salmon. As head chef at Marco Pierre White Steakhouse in Newcastle, meat is definitely the menu mainstay – as its name would suggest – so Paul and his team were definitely up for the challenge of flexing their creative muscles (not to mention mussels) to prepare a seasonal Supper Club menu. The bespoke menu was all about showcasing new additions to the restaurant’s offerings and saying hello to a new season of flavours – something every chef relishes. The MPW Steakhouse nestles within Hotel Indigo in the historic Grainger Town in Newcastle. Known for an impeccable steak menu (and jolly good burgers) it also offers table d’ hote and a la carte menus. The evening’s tasting team were faced with a menu that included MPW classics but which had been ‘tweaked’ by Paul and his team in a spirit of dining adventure. French classics and gastro favourites found their place on the menu. Starters included seared scallops with a fricassee of cauliflower and pancetta. Deftly cooked scallops retained a hint of translucency and their silky texture was paired with nubby cauliflower and crisp, salty pancetta for a well-balanced dish. Beetroot and goat’s cheese salad looked every bit the pretty picture, the beetroot fanned across the plate with soft crumbled cheese. More textures playing out from the addition of candied walnuts then a drizzle of a merlot dressing. Fennel and orange are always a good pairing and teamed up with delicately smoked salmon and the tartness of blueberry,
JUL/AUG18
they created a flavoursome, light and fresh appetiser. At the helm with wine suggestions was the effusive and insightful Bruno SIngre. Beaujolais Villages with your smoked salmon – who knew? Bruno proved the point with this unexpected combination. The soft, berryish red gamay grapes teaming well with the oaky salmon while a Casablanca Valley sauvignon blanc was an on-point player with the seared scallops. Between dishes, chef delighted with a surprise course which arrived at the table in rustic iron crockpots. Lifting the lid, the smoky aroma of pork, pancetta and black pudding was enticing. The rich meats melded to create an intense tapas-like portion of slow-cooked riches. Main courses had of course to play to the strength of the restaurant. What’s a steakhouse without steak? This wasn’t just steak though; this was 28 day aged fillet of beef. Served pink and tender enough to invite a knife to cut through it like butter. Great depth of flavour and flourishing with its forest accompaniments of earthy wild mushrooms and sweet roasted shallots. Delicate pommes mousseline and spinach shared the plate and Bruno emerged with South African Nederburg cabernet sauvignon to complete the experience. At another extreme on this celebratory menu was the sweetheart of many a menu, sea bass. Chef Amer played a blinder with a lightness of touch in a dish of two halves, perfectly blended. First the pan-fried supreme of sea bass, a nicely pitched piece of soft-fleshed fish served atop a beautiful shellfish broth that was a delicious thing all on its own. The broth also included home-made gnocchi and a really fulsome array of seafood; handsome, juicy prawns, mussels and scallops. All bathing in an light but intricately flavoured
What’s a steakhouse without steak? This wasn’t just steak though; this was 28 day aged fillet of beef. Served pink and tender broth packed with the richness and aroma of a laboured-over stock base. This was charmed by Bruno’s choice of the citrusy and crisp Piemonte Gavi Bianca. The menu also included pink and perfect new season lamb served with garden fresh peas, celeriac puree and fondant potato. Desserts expertly covered the extremes of dining with a chocolate vs raspberries taste-off. Assiette of chocolate brought an abundance of the richest textures and tastes to the plate. These teamed with a glass of the grand Hungarian Tokaji Aszu 5 Puttonyos, a sweet dessert wine with flavours of marmalade and quince, eagerly able to stand up to the richness of the chocolate. By contrast, the surprise latecomer to the party was the distinctive Louis Dornier rose champagne, served alongside a berryish dessert treat of raspberry panna cotta. A perfect partner in terms of its soft pink hue, the champagne teamed with tart fresh berries and raspberry gel, proving a tasty talking point, adding a cheeky lift at the end of an epic dinner. All was rounded off with a platter of cheese, a posse of happy diners and a ‘job well done’ team in the kitchen. Hotel Indigo, Newcastle

Dine after dark and indulge in mussels or the finest new-season lamb, or enjoy a lively lunch of grilled favourites and seasonal salads. Watch this space!
At the helm of the hotel kitchen is Executive Chef Mike Wilkinson. A chef who governs over a range of international recipes, Mike has travelled the world, working at Sandals Antigua, Al Bustan Palace Oman and The Homestead Virginia to name but a few. The inspiration to travel so widely came from Kurt Hartmann, Mike’s first Executive Chef from his time as an apprentice at the Lodore Swiss Hotel, Keswick. “He had an enormous influence on my career and encouraged me to travel the world. As a result, I gained so much experiencing working and cooking in and alongside different cultures and styles,” says Mike. While the inspiration for the international adventure was from a respected mentor, his reason for working as a chef in the first instance was his own, “It just seemed right. I was brought up in a very tourist-driven area of the Lake District, with most of my friends working in the hotel or restaurant industry. My passion for food and travel grew from there.”

C A PT U R I N G T H E COAST The North East’s coastal landscape has inspired architect Stuart Duckett to create an eco-friendly paint collection to bring the spirit of seaspray and shingle into the home. Kathryn Armstrong finds out more
Who doesn’t come back from a trip to the coast with sand in their shoes and an insatiable appetite for a beach hut to call their own? It’s easy to be enthused by the tingle of salty sea air, invigorated by crashing waves and inspired by the complexity - sometimes gentle, sometimes harsh, of the landscape of our coastline. We dive in to a world of chalky paints, nautical navy and white or the myriad greys and blues that spell out the sea, skies and cliffs as we seek to create our own little harbour of calm at home. Architect and design expert Stuart Duckett has lived among among the landscape of Whitby, Sandsend and the village of Lythe all of his life. Coastal colours, textures and the changing seasons have all informed his work as an architect and latterly his desire to delve in to furniture restoration – and pursue his painterly ambitions. Enter Colours of Whitby, Stuart’s collection
of eco-friendly paints, made from recycled paint and very much based on the colours within his daily environment. The paint range, ‘inspired by architecture, nature and the sea’ will be part of a new venture for Stuart called, In Your House. This will be a studio base on the North Yorkshire coast for a selection of painted furniture – particularly mid-century pieces which he is passionate about. It will be a base for amongst other things, furniture painting workshops and also a hub for ‘reclaimed, recycled and reused’ items which will be tomorrow’s design treasures. In the future Stuart plans to hold ‘pop up’ stores across the region to showcase his wares. But for now it’s the new paint collection that’s being talked about. From summer four colours from the collection will be available with more launched later in the year. Stuart has worked with a paint manufacturer to ensure the collection will be as eco-friendly as it can be, creating the paint blends using recycled paint which would

otherwise be dumped. The all-purpose mid-sheen paint is made from up to 75% recycled paint, water based and eco-friendly. The paint can be used indoors and outdoors, on wood, sheds, furniture, doors, interior walls, ceilings, and wooden furniture. Their colour tones all have lovely stories to tell. Two of the shades in particular will even be doing their bit to give back to the Whitby’s heritage. The colours Seaspray and Lifeboat have their own story to tell. Lifeboat is the distinctive deep blue shade of the Whitby lifeboat hull beneath its orange body. No need to guess the inspiration for the cool shade of the Seaspray.
Their colour tones all have lovely stories to tell. Two of the shades in particular will even be doing their bit to give back to the Whitby’s heritage “When the North Sea embraces the Yorkshire coast, even the Whitby lighthouse is almost lost behind the spray where a creamy salty white is captured”, says Stuart. These two colours will be raising money for Whitby Lifeboat with a 10 pc donation from every sale. The iconic colour palette will include: Lighthouse White; white with a subtle hint of blue to reflect the lantern enclosure of Whitby lighthouse. Abbey Dusk; as the sun sets on Whitby Abbey, the Gothic golden brown that emerges is what inspired this striking

but neutral palette. Runswick Bay Blue; when the sunshine and blue skies reflect in this bay, an almost Mediterranean sea of blue green emerges. This shade is a calming, cosy and embracing teal. Woodland Moss; the deep green found on tree bark in Mulgrave Woods near Sandsend is the inspiration for this natural shade. Sandsend Shale Grey; inspired by the shale cliffs at Sandsend, a subtle, warm and neutral sandy grey. Says Stuart; “This will be the first palette of several collections planned for the future. “In addition, In Your House will be a brand with a focus on reducing waste and retailing recycled products alongside design-led home and lifestyle items. “We will sell products designed by me to include lighting, furniture, radiograms, plus a range of ‘preloved’ and new retro products and classic vinyl records.” As an architect, Stuart has worked on many projects in North Yorkshire and beyond during his practice. Prestigious schemes have included the Sandsend Holidays complex, luxury barn conversions, impressive self-build homes and the iconic Union Mill apartments in Whitby. In 2014 Stuart opened a retail studio which featured many of his favourite mid-Century designers – such as Mini Moderns. He hopes his new project, paint and beyond will inspire people to appreciate good design. “I love the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rhoe, Gaudi and the design ingenuity of Eames. All so far ahead of their time, yet still timeless. “Wonderful creation of spaces and products for people to enjoy. Design to make you smile, feel good and to last. Proof that it is wise to invest in good design.” www.inyourhouse.co.uk

SUMMER BREEZE
TREND WATCH with Kate Rose, founder of lifestyle brand, Tutti&Co A taste of new season style...
The summer months are a busy time as a working mum. Juggling the school holidays and your workload through the busiest period of the year can prove stressful at times, so it’s important to plan a few treats and make the most of the summer weather - when we get it! Long walks at the coast, entertaining outdoors and, of course, indulging in some summer fashion… a perfect combination!
Listening…. Stay Awake With Me by Dan Owen. An easy listening album. Perfect background music for summer entertaining, too.
Wearing... Every year I invest in a new pair of summer sandals and, this year, my pick is the Rozen Sandal in Natural Pink. Crafted from subtle leather with intricate twisted straps, they will become your warm weather go-to. Together, the flat sole and ankle strap create the perfect style for effortless everyday wear. I also love to invest in a shirt and, this season, the cotton and silk natural shirt from Massimo Dutti is the perfect style. With decorative pockets, Kent collar and straight fit, it’s great for tucking into denim shorts, or skinny jeans. Dress it up with heels and statement earrings, or, for a relaxed look, tie your hair back in a messy bun and wear with sneakers.
Styling… I love to have a little change around in the house. Adding wall art can be a really effective way of creating a fresh new look, without having to decorate a whole room. Together with a considered collection of carefully-styled decorative accessories, it can instantly transform a space. I love the neutral tones of the industrial print (available at the end of July), simply styled to inspire. An inexpensive way to add effortless style.
Inspired by... Happiness is homemade, especially in this beautiful book filled with summer cottages - or ‘hideaways’ as they are suitably called. It’s full of bright, beautiful and inspiring ideas. Hideaways are places where you can leave behind the mundane and revel in a serene atmosphere - and you certainly feel that way while flicking through the pages of this book. It’s an inspiring coffee table book and looks great when styled alongside candles and vases full of summer flowers.
Eating... I love to bake, but with the holiday months approaching, I try to bake healthier treats and something the whole family will eat, which is often the most difficult part. So, after lots of taste-tests, the family favourite turns out to be my date and pecan cookies. I often add different nuts to the mixture, depending on what I have in the cupboard. Sometimes I go for cashews or walnuts, but anything goes, really. Be warned, though. They are extremely moreish! The perfect afternoon treat. RECIPE 150g coconut palm sugar 125g coconut oil (or organic butter) 1 egg 25g buckwheat flour A pinch of salt 1/2 tsp baking powder 50g pecans, chopped 50g almonds, chopped 50g dates, chopped Cream together the oil/butter and sugar, before mixing in the egg. Add the flour a little at a time. Mix the dates, nuts, salt and baking powder. Line a tray with baking parchment, pour the mixture into the tray and bake for 12-15 minutes at 180C. Leave to cool, then cut into squares and keep in an air-tight container in the fridge.
JUL/AUG18
Loving…. Blush & Grey Humble scarf, £45. The words read ‘the things that influence us are often humble’. Beautiful words for a beautiful scarf!
Exploring… As the school holidays approach, I’m always on the lookout for interesting ways to keep the kids entertained over the long summer break. It’s not always easy to find something that interests both my son and daughter, however I may have just found the perfect day out to suit the whole family. Middleton Lodge is hosting a Children’s Wilderness Day on 10 August from 9am –4pm. Mini adventurists spend the day outdoors, exploring the estate and learning valuable wilderness survival skills. Shelter-building, fire-lighting, fun challenges, problem-solving and even a wilderness hide and seek game are all part of the day’s adventures. While the kids are having a day of fun, I might just book in for a treatment at the spa and enjoy a long lunch with my husband. Sounds like the perfect day for everyone.

If you want to get your wellies on and enjoy the great outdoors, rural villages such as Hurworth and Croft are great spots for nature trails along the Tees.

my local Nicholas Thexton is owner and pizzaiolo at Stable Hearth - a Neapolitan pizzeria and enoteca based in Duke Street, Darlington. The go-to guy when it comes to dreamy doughs and tasty toppings. Three good things about living here >> • Duke Street - this bustling area of town is full of independent shops, businesses and restaurants. New shops are opening up here almost weekly and the area is thriving. • The Darlington Hippodrome theatre - the Grade II listed building looks great after a year-long multi-million pound refurbishment in 2017. West End shows and smaller local productions such as Theatre Hullabaloo, introduce young audiences to live shows. • Location - within an hour you can be in the Lake District, Newcastle or at theseaside. Three places to take visitors >> • The Railway Museum (Head of Steam). Darlington is the birthplace of the railways and we are proud of this heritage. • The surrounding countryside and the Dales are packed full of interesting eateries and breathtaking views. Drive up through Barnard Castle and into Teesdale and head for some food and refreshments at The Crown in Mickleton. • Hamsterley Forest - within half an hour’s drive you can be in a 2,000 hectare oasis. Children and adults can spend many hours getting lost in nature. An ‘in-the-know’ secret >> The Victorian indoor market has recently been taken over by the company who operate London’s Borough Market. Here’s to hoping that within the next year we will see it turned around and a bustling, busy place again for locals and visitors to shop. www.facebook.com/stablehearth

WITH JANET HOPKINSON
THE ART OF NEGOTIATION There is a time in the course of a negotiation when the wheels sometimes come close to falling off. We can see it with Brexit when the House of Lords decided to vote against the government. And we can see it with the trade arrangements with the EU, including the Irish border issue, when the hurdles seem insurmountable. In a property negotiation these problems could be a mortgage lender reneging on an in-principle offer, a surveyor finding a structural problem or a solicitor coming up with a serious legal concern. But it could also be because a buyer further down the chain has decided that they want to renegotiate their purchase price, thus setting about a chain reaction of frustration and fury. Often the first instinct is to throw one’s toys out of the pram, stamp a foot and threaten to pull out from the deal if there isn’t an exchange of contracts by Friday (why is it always a Friday?). But what if you really have to sell and/or you really want to buy the home you have your heart set on? Then making empty threats isn’t going to get anyone anywhere. Faced with a price problem there are several options. The first is telling the offending party that you will not accede to their demands. This can be a good strategy if you have the nerve. After all, if you stand up to bullies they often climb down. But you can’t bluff away a legal, structural or mortgage problem. What you need in those circumstances is to go back to the negotiating table and look for ways to overcome the stumbling block so everyone can win. To do this well you will need a high degree of experience, talent and acumen in negotiating. You will also need a cool head and the ability to generate goodwill in a situation where only bad will is prevailing – or you will need someone with all these attributes to help you. Where do you get such an ally? You find an experienced estate agent. When you are choosing an estate agent to sell your property, ask him or her what negotiating skills they have and ask them to give a recent example of how they overcame a difficult obstacle during a transaction. If they can’t do that you don’t want them within a million miles of your sale. Often people say they are estate agents when they are only listing clerks. There is a big difference and with your most valuable asset at risk you really do want to hire the real thing.

Naomi Hall, 39, runs Jolie Lingerie on Yarm high street. She’s mum to three boys, Freddie, ten, Henry, seven, and George, five – and also proud mum to Betty Boobs. The vintage VW was a present from husband Jonathan when she opened her shop CHILDHOOD CAR CRUSH >> I wanted a really souped-up Suzuki jeep when I was a teenager. I didn’t get one - my first car was a red Peugeot 205. WHAT’S IN THE GARAGE NOW? >> Beautiful Betty Boobs, who, at 49, is a fine vintage of a classic car. My husband Jonathan (he co-owns Muse, Cena and Bay Horse Hurworth), tracked her down. She had been lovingly looked after and restored, but she has spent all winter having a makeover with a new interior and upholstery. My other car is a Land Rover Defender pick-up. I have a horse called Joker and inherited a Shetland pony called Mauree, so there’s lots of stuff to carry about. We also have a Volvo and Jonathan has a Harley. IF YOU COULD OWN ANY CAR? >> I’d love a huge, luxurious horsebox that you could live in. Or a Ferrari, perhaps, but I think I might be a bit nervy driving that. CAPTAIN SLOW? >> I’d say I’m a cautious driver. I sometimes think I’m whizzing about in the Defender, but when I look, I’m doing 40mph! WHO SHOULD PRESENT TOP GEAR? >> It’s always on in our house - the kids are car mad. I’d like to see Angelina Jolie or Davina McCall presenting it. TRACKS OF MY TYRES >> Noel Gallagher, De la Soul, or A Tribe Called Quest.
88 www.luxe-magazine.co.uk
WHAT’S IN THE GLOVE BOX? >> Betty is immaculate. There’s a new Bluetooth radio where the glove box used to be! The other car is a dustbin. MEMORABLE MOMENTS >> When I got married, my neighbour drove me to my wedding in his classic Morris Minor with the roof down. We travelled down the country lanes and it was wonderful! SCARY MOMENTS >> Betty was delivered as a surprise to me to Yarm high street. She was winched from a truck, but one of the chains snapped and she was dropped on someone else’s car!

AT THE WHEEL
C U T TI N G A DA S H Porsche’s third-generation motor is a diesel-ditching dream, promising interior thrills and plenty of off-road action
To say the first generation Cayenne was pug-ugly would be the understatement of the year! Despite being a site for sore eyes, Porsche have managed to shift 770,000 cars. Thankfully, the second generation Cayenne was much better looking; a diesel was added to the range and it sold like hot cakes. It was originally launched in 2002 and Porsche purists were up in arms at a SUV joining the range. It did allow plenty of new customers to the brand, which was a total win-win for Porsche. The Macan is now the best-selling car in the range. SUV’s really are a cash cow for manufacturers and it’s no wonder everyone is jumping on to the bandwagon. The profits have enabled Porsche to put money back into its sports cars and EV technology, which is no bad thing at all. Porsche’s all-electric car, the Mission E, which is due next year, is going to be real competition for the Tesla Model S. Back to the Cayenne and I’ve driven the new third generation car. From the front, even the biggest super fan would be hard-pressed to see the difference. The bodywork is all new and it’s a mix of steel and aluminium, which helps make the car lighter. The designers have taken inspiration for the styling of the rear of the car from the 911 & the Panamera - the rear strip gives the rear of the car a great look. The car is only available with three petrol engines, or a hybrid. Ditching the diesel is quite a brave move as they always tend to be the best-sellers in the range. The entry Cayenne has a three-litre engine with a
90 www.luxe-magazine.co.uk
single turbo that pumps out 340bhp. The Cayenne S has a 2.9-litre engine with twin turbos and that pumps out 440bhp, but the range topping Turbo has a four-litre engine and twin turbos that pump out 550bhp. It’s basically a two tonne 911 on stilts. I haven’t driven the Hybrid yet, but it sounds
amazing. It’s nearly as fast as the Turbo and it promises nearly 80mpg. I drove the entry-level Cayenne, which isn’t a slouch and it sounds great, too. It should have returned nearly 34mpg, but the best I managed to return was 23mpg. This makes the Hybrid even more appealing. The car I drove had a nice set of 21” alloy wheels and despite being so big they didn’t really spoil the ride. I can only imagine cars fitted with the optional air suspension will offer an even smoother ride. Aside from having 21” alloys, the car still looked as though it could have done with slightly larger ones to fill
the arches properly. The previous Cayenne’s interior was definitely starting to show its age. The beautiful dash and switchgear have been carried over from the Panamera. The dash is dominated by a massive screen, which is touchscreen, and the car’s audio, navigation and phone are all controlled via the screen. All of the switches for the car’s heating and suspension are alongside the gearbox. Instead of switches, you press the panel alongside the gearbox. It makes the whole dash far less cluttered and it looks very classy indeed.
JUL/AUG18
PORSCHE POWER A large rev counter sits in the middle, as it does with all Porsches, and on either side are two seven-inch screens. They display everything from a sat-nav map to all important driving data. It just oozes quality. I personally think the indicator storks feel cheap and it’s a shame they’ve been taken from the Audi parts bin as the Porsche ones just felt a bit more solid. There is a bit more room in the back for passengers as the Cayenne is slightly larger than the previous car. The boot is also 100 litres larger than the previous cars, which was already a decent size. All cars in the range get LED headlights as standard and autonomous braking and pedestrian awareness. The car alerts you to any possible accidents and it even brakes if it sees an upcoming collision. It’s easy to confuse the system, though, as when I was driving in Jesmond along Osbourne Road, there is a tight section as you turn a corner. The car thinks you’re going to hit an obstacle and it slams the brakes on, when all you are actually doing is passing parked cars and avoiding the bit in the middle of the road where pedestrians stand! If you’ve driven past it, you’ll know where I mean! This latest Cayenne is still a great car to drive and if you want to throw the car into corners it’s ready for that. And with the right tyres on, it’s up for some off-roading. A trip to the Porsche Experience Centre at Silverstone and you get to see just how capable it is off-road. I’d like to thank Graeme and Alex at Porsche Edinburgh for organising this car for me at short notice. Car supplied by Porsche Edinburgh.

KEEPING PACE
Meet the fat cat
Say hello to the little brother of Jaguar’s F Pace; a sharp and sporty motor worthy of a summertime spin
Don’t be fooled into thinking E stands for electric, because it doesn’t. This car is the smaller brother to the larger F Pace. The F Pace has fast-become the best-selling Jaguar; it goes to prove just what a sales phenomenon SUV’s have become. The new E Pace looks like it’s going to see similarly massive sales. Jaguar hope the E Pace will take them over a quarter of million sales per year. Another great thing for Jaguar is most of the E and F Pace customers are new to the brand. Jaguar will hope to keep these eager new customers for life and get them to work their way through the range. The E Pace’s styling is based on the F Type;
92 www.luxe-magazine.co.uk
the designers haven’t taken the easy option of just scaling down its bigger brother. From the sporty front lights to the swooping rear section, the car just looks really sharp and sporty. The car’s platform is taken from the equally best-selling Evoque/Discovery Sport. Entry-level E Paces are all front-wheel drive with manual gearboxes and are priced from £28,000. The range-topping First Edition costs just under £50,000, which is big money for a small SUV! The last time we saw a front-wheel drive Jaguar, it was the much-disliked X Type. That wasn’t a good car for Jaguar, but I do think they’ll be ok with the E Pace. It’s a much nicer-looking car and it’s a great drive. The car is available with three diesel engines and two petrol engines and they’re all
Jaguar’s Ingenium range. The diesels are called D150, D180 and the D240, while the petrol engines are P250 and P300. The numbers after the letters indicate the car’s bhp. I drove the P180 in Dynamic R guise, which Jaguar think will be the best-selling car in the range. Most cars will be the optional nine-speed automatic, but a manual gearbox is also available. It’s aimed at stealing sales from both the BMW X1 and the Q3, but it needs to take on the Volvo XC40, which has fast-become the best-selling car in its class. I’ll be driving the Volvo soon; it’s a beautiful-looking car, but I think the E Pace has what it takes to take it on. The Jaguar factories are running at full capacity in the UK, so with this in mind cars destined for Europe will be made in Austria in the same factory that makes the Mercedes G Wagon. Jaguar also has a factory in China to make cars for the rest of the world. My car had 21-inch alloys, which help give the car a real sporty look, along with the body kit. Despite the big wheels and low profile tyres, the ride wasn’t as bad as I was expecting. Cars running on the smaller alloys will no doubt have a more comfortable ride. The interior is very ‘Jaguar’ indeed; from the grab handle on the passenger side to the switchgear, it’s all really great. The dash is biased towards the driver; I liked the rotary dials for the heating. The Sat Nav wasn’t as good as BMW’s, however. The car I drove had the optional Meridian speakers, which were brilliant. There is an abundance of storage space, from the huge glove box to the side pockets. Space in the rear was ok for three adults and the panoramic roof makes the car feel very light and airy inside. I must say, the rear window is very small, though, and I needed the parking
sensors, especially when anyone was sitting in the back. The boot space is smaller than its rivals and strangely enough the car is actually heavier than its big brother! The extra weight means it’s not quite as dynamic as a small car really should be. Driving this car along country roads highlights just how heavy it is and it doesn’t like being thrown in to corners at all.
The F Pace has fastbecome the best-selling Jaguar; it goes to prove just what a sales phenomenon SUV’s have become
My car had the optional diamond style stitching in the leather; the interior is a really nice place to spend some time. The diesel engine is a bit noisy, but they are obviously more efficient than the petrol versions. The E Pace is a welcome addition to the segment and, despite its shortcomings, it genuinely is a nice car to drive. The styling works and, despite its weight, the car is a rare sight on the roads and I’m sure Jaguar will make a record number of cars this year. The E Pace will help find plenty allimportant new customers for the brand. Car courtesy of Stratstone Jaguar Newcastle
