I have worked in the financial industry for over 20 years and it’s a role I relish. I work with clients to achieve their financial aims and objectives throughout various stages of life. The long-term relationships I have built with them - and quite often their families, too - gives me a real sense of satisfaction. I understand that, for a lot of people, financial planning can feel like a minefield; especially when changes in rules and regulations are concerned, but also when it comes to finding the time to keep on top of your own personal finances while juggling everyday life. We all have concerns regarding life’s what-ifs, many of which I find relate to financial uncertainties. Questions I often hear are “do I have sufficient life cover?”, “what about long-term care?”, “when can I retire and how much do I need to achieve the retirement I want?” and “how can I ensure my wealth passes on to future generations and not Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs?” While life is full of uncertainties, effective financial planning can help remove a lot of the worry and doubt surrounding them. Sometimes, a second opinion is all that is needed to give clients peace of mind that they have, or will have, the financial security they need in the most tax-efficient way. I believe that good financial advice, whether it be around retirement planning, investment planning - including for children, life cover or IHT planning, is invaluable. For example, when it comes to retirement planning, the increased flexibility around pensions and how you can pass on benefits, means clients can tailor their retirement to suit their individual needs and circumstances. I offer a no obligation meeting to anyone wishing to discuss their financial objectives and priorities. These can be held in my office or in your own home - whichever you are more comfortable with. This will be a holistic review of your circumstances, both financial and personal, to ensure any recommendation meets your own individual needs. I also run seminars throughout the year in various locations in the north of England. Again, these are without obligation and cover investment, retirement, protection and estate planning, as well as the main rules for any investor and other topical financial issues. If you feel this may be of interest to you, please contact my office who will be more than happy to book you on to a seminar on a suitable date and at a venue near you.
Hats and scarves at the ready. Wrap up in something cosy and head over to the Walled Garden at Middleton Lodge for their annual bonfire night display. Gaze up at the sparkling firework display, warm up by the crackling bonfire and tuck into tasty treats as food stalls line the venue. Why not make a night of it and book in for a hearty dinner at The Coach House restaurant? middletonlodge.co.uk

UNTIL 22 FEBRUARY 2020 The Laing Art Gallery’s Enchanted Interior exhibition is a must-see this winter - the perfect cultural activity for rainy days. The display explores the sinister implications of a popular theme in nineteenth-century painting: the depiction of the interior as a ‘gilded cage’ in which women are pictured as ornamental objects. Iconic Pre-Raphaelite paintings by artists such as Edward Burne-Jones and William Holman Hunt will be shown alongside works by their female peers such as Emma Sandys and Evelyn De Morgan, who challenge and subvert the idealisation of women as captive damsels or passive beauties. laingartgallery.org.uk

ADVERTORIAL
Christmas spirit It’s November, the goose is getting fat and thoughts are turning to Christmas. November might be a bit soon for carols and mince pies, but it is not too early to consider the consequences the injudicious use of alcohol could incur over the festive season. The mixing of alcohol and transport has always been a problem although it was not officially recognised in the UK until 1872 when the Licensing Act came into force and made it an offence to be drunk in charge of a carriage, horse, cow or steam engine! If one were to flout the law in such areas, the penalty was a fine not exceeding 40 shillings or at the discretion of the court, imprisonment with or without hard labour for a term not exceeding one month. This was improved upon in 1925 when the Criminal Justice Act made it an offence to be drunk in charge of any mechanically propelled vehicle on any highway or other public place and increased the penalty to a fine not exceeding 50 shillings or imprisonment for a period not exceeding four months as well as a disqualification from holding a driving licence for a minimum period of 12 months. Under the current law mandatory disqualification for drinking whilst over the limit remains as a minimum of 12 months disqualification and increases in line with the increase in blood
alcohol level reading which is determined at the Police Station following arrest by the Lion Intoxilyzer 6000UK (a secondgeneration machine which measures alcohol content in breath). The higher the reading the longer the disqualification, which also comes with a financial penalty, a community order, and if the reading is particularly high, the prospect of custody becomes a reality, which is something nobody would want to contemplate. The best way to avoid any problems with regards drink driving is, of course, to avoid doing it at all costs. There are some occasions when drink driving can be tolerated to some extent and in such situations the court can be persuaded to show some degree of leniency when normally no quarter would be given. An example of this would be duress, which can be used as a defence if it can be shown that a person has lost control of his will brought about by threats to one’s safety, in order to escape serious physical injury they have jumped into a car and driven off – literally fleeing from danger. Acting in time of emergency despite having drunk alcohol may afford the defendant with the opportunity of pleading ‘special reasons’ not to disqualify – the good samaritan who, having exhausted all other options, drives the injured or sick party to the hospital – but be warned going to the hospital may well provide the option of special reasons to be found by a court, but driving home
would definitely not. The person who commits the offence without knowledge that they have done so and never intended to do so, may also avoid disqualification if certain criteria are met and the court decide, having found special reasons, to exercise their discretion not to disqualify. ‘Spiked drinks’ fall under the special reasons line of argument and afford defendants the possibility of retaining their driving licences despite being guilty of drink driving, but it is worth remembering that none of these exceptions are ever straightforward and to persuade a court otherwise is never easy. The argument needs careful, detailed and thorough preparation prior to the hearing. Drunk in charge of a motor vehicle is an offence that some people are unaware of and it can catch those who go to a Christmas party not intending to drink but then do and very sensibly decide not to drive home and perhaps end up sleeping in their car until the morning. Be careful if parked in a public place with your car keys as, if the police happen upon you, because you have your car keys with you puts you in charge of the motor vehicle – and as you have been drinking that makes you ‘drunk’ in charge. The offence can result in a disqualification or ten penalty points together with a fine, thus ruining New Year and beyond. At MFL we look at every possible (lawful)
option available, and if there isn’t one, we will help prepare a full mitigation in your best interests to limit the time you may be without your licence; which can have far reaching implications not only for the driver, but also their family. If you have a road traffic problem, let us at MFL look at it and we will provide you with your best possible options. And even if it is a little premature, HAPPY CHRISTMAS!

GOOD STUFF
Sweet charity Doing good things in the North East, our charity round-up... round-up CHARITY GETS GROOVY >> Heel & Toe Children’s Charity is a North East initiative supporting children with cerebral palsy and other physical disabilities. This winter, Heel & Toe will be holding their annual Groovyland Ball at the Hilton Newcastle Gateshead on Friday 29 November to raise money for their fantastic charity. This dazzling black tie event comes complete with champagne reception, delicious three-course meal and half a bottle of wine per person. So far, fundraising has helped the charity to build their very own hydrotherapy centre with a specially designed heated pool to target and treat a wide spectrum of conditions. More fundraising is now needed to facilitate re-bound therapy and gait analysis for children. heelandtoe.org.uk
MAN FOR THE JOB >> North East-based international children’s charity, COCO (Comrades of Children Overseas), has recruited a new team member in response to the growing appetite of its supporters for adventurous challenges. Matt Bishop has joined COCO as fundraising manager and will be responsible for expanding the charity’s programme of events in the UK and abroad, which helps raise the funds to improve the quality of education available to children living in extreme poverty in East Africa. One of the first events that Matt will co-ordinate will be the Victoria Cycle Challenge in November. As well as taking charge of the logistics for the trip and the fundraising campaign that accompanies it, he will arrange for the participants to find out more about a COCO project during their ride. They will visit COCO School for Life Mercy Primary, where they will meet some of the young people who have benefited from the charity’s work. COCO’s Schools for Life programme helps children to access sustainable education in a safe environment and covers six key elements: shelter, power, water and sanitation, food, sports and recreation, and entrepreneurship. coco.org.uk

BE UNSTOPPABLE >> Pop on your trainers and round up the gang (four-legged friends welcome) for the Poppy Run 2019 at Aykley Recreation Ground in Durham. On Saturday 2 November, runners, walkers and joggers of all abilities are invited to join in the fun, raising money for veterans in the Armed Forces. Donations will help the Armed Forces community gain the skills and self-belief to transform their lives as they recover from physical and mental challenges. Participants will receive a finisher’s medal and a Royal British Legion tshirt. A special medallion will be awarded to everyone who raises over £100. britishlegion.org.uk
GARDEN GLORY >> The Percy Hedley Foundation provides a wide range of high-quality, specialist and personalised care and education support for disabled children, young people, adults and their families across the North East. The foundation is holding a ball this November to fundraise for the charity. This year’s theme is ‘Secret Garden’, and promises a fabulous night of live entertainment, great food and fabulous fundraising. Held at the Hilton Newcastle Gateshead on Saturday 23 November, tickets are available for £130 per person, either individually or in tables of 10 or 12. percyhedley.org.uk
A HELPING HAND >> Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) has been named Rockliffe Hall’s nominated charity for the next year. GNAAS continues to rescue hundreds of injured and ill patients every year. With its three helicopter air ambulances at bases at Durham Tees Valley Airport and Langwathby, the charity covers around 8,000 square miles in the North East, Cumbria and North Yorkshire. GNAAS received no funding from the NHS and relies solely on donations by the public. It’s a tough job that costs a lot of money – in the last year alone, GNAAS responded to 1,062 call-outs at a hefty cost of £5.2 million. The five-star resort of Rockliffe Hall has pledged to raise £10,000 for the charity through events including special dinners, afternoon teas and a golf day. Simon Roberts, General Manager at Rockliffe Hall, said: “We are delighted to be partnering with GNAAS as the resort’s chosen charity for the next 12 months. None of us know what is around the corner or when we might need the help of an air ambulance, so this is a very worthy cause for us all to support. With Rockliffe’s tenth anniversary in 2019, we thought it fitting that we should set the ambitious fundraising target of £10,000 and we’ll be doing all we can to hit it.” rockliffehall.com
ALL WHITE ON THE NIGHT >> An amazing £31,000 was raised for CHUF, one of the North East’s leading charities which supports the children’s heart unit at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital, at the highly-anticipated Red Sky Ball White Party, which took place at Ramside Hall Hotel on 15 September. It’s the third time The White Party has been organised by Sunderland couple Sergio and Emma Petrucci, who are also responsible for the successful annual Red Sky Ball gala dinner, bringing the couple’s fundraising total to an incredible £336,000 in the last three years. 400 people came together to enjoy an Ibiza-style celebration, including Steps and Strictly star, Faye Tozer - who is patron and ambassador for Red Sky Ball former England cricketer, Ryan Sidebottom and celebrity DJs, Chris Bungoni and Brandon Block, who performed at the event. One lucky couple won a three-night VIP holiday to Ushuaia Ibiza Beach Hotel one of Red Sky Ball’s headline sponsors this year and a luxury resort home to world-famous DJs including Calvin Harris, David Guetta and Swedish House Mafia. redskyball.com
STYLE SAVVY >> In September, a Jesmond fashion boutique curated a new partnership with The Biscuit Factory in Newcastle to host a charity fashion show. Salisa Boutique specialises in casual glamour clothing and accessories, and launched their new season collection at the Ouseburn gallery in the autumn. £2,000 was raised on the evening, with ticket and raffle proceeds donated to Maggie’s – a charity that provides free practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer and their family and friends. At the fall fashion show, guests enjoyed a champagne reception, a light supper and seasonal clothing display, showcasing the boutique’s latest collection. The likes of Space NK, Jesmond Dene House, YogaSis and other local businesses were also on board with promotional pop-ups and goodie bags. Rachel Brown, General Manager at The Biscuit Factory, said: “It’s great to work with another independent local business, bringing together the world of fashion and art. To raise funds for a charity whose invaluable work means such a great deal to so many people, is very rewarding.” thebiscuitfactory.com | salisa.co.uk

Emma Bridgewater in Barbour Eleanor Wax RRP £229
BRIDGING THE GAP Country-inspired ceramics and heritage clothing collide this season thanks to a creative collaboration between Emma Bridgewater and Barbour
Designed with the great British countryside in mind, the collection includes wax jackets, gilets, shirts, knits and accessories. Elysia Fryer checks in to explore the collection… All gorgeous, country kitchens need the Emma Bridgewater stamp. How did your business come about and what inspires it? In 1985 I was looking for a really special cup and saucer for my mum’s birthday, but everything was either too formal or too clunky. That was my eureka moment. I realised there was a gap in the market for pottery that was beautiful and practical pottery that reflected the relaxed, colourful, mismatched home I’d grown up in. For me, a kitchen (in the city or the country) should be warm and welcoming, and preferably with a dog on the sofa and shelves full of lovely pottery. What do you love most about being in the countryside, and how does this influence your designs? We design with the product we would
22 luxe-magazine.co.uk
like to have ourselves in mind, we don’t follow trends. Our Rise & Shine collection for example, was directly inspired by real bantams such as the ones my mother had when I was child. A particularly generous crop of tomatoes a few years ago inspired a bowl covered in beautifully illustrated tomatoes, which was the beginning of the now much-loved Vegetable Garden collection. A day in the life of you? No two days are ever the same as my time is split between several locations. Firstly, in Oxford where I live, and I also spend a great deal of time in Stoke-on-Trent - where our factory is - to review designs, check in with the production team, and oversee events. I also spend some time in our head office in London with my design, marketing and buying teams. There is never a dull moment. We’re very excited about your collaboration with Barbour, how did this come about? It felt like something was falling into place when the discussions first began some time ago; this collaboration just felt so natural.
I love and trust Barbour coats, they combine style and function so well. And, of course, I am really proud to be working with another brand that values British manufacturing. What can buyers expect to see? It has been very rewarding to re-invent some older patterns to make them work for the Barbour collection. As a simple rule, our team designs things that we would like to have, things for our own home life, which I think is important. Barbour items in your wardrobe? I’ve always turned to Barbour to keep me cosy and dry, it is an essential for damp English weather. I especially like the Barbour x Emma Bridgewater wax jacket with the lining sprinkled with our classic lettering, it feels like the ideal combination of familiar elements from both of our brands.
How have you enjoyed working with a brand in the North East? I have some family connections in Northumberland and have enjoyed loads of lovely holidays in the area. Lindisfarne is one of my very favourite places, and Bamburgh beach is the perfect place for a wind-swept walk. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not designing? I love spending time outdoors, and try to make that a priority whenever I can with walking and cycling. The Barbour x Emma Bridgewater collection is available to buy now on barbour.com and via selected Barbour stockists. barbour.com emmabridgewater.co.uk

LIVING IT UP
TREND WATCH
with Kate Rose, founder of lifestyle brand, Tutti&Co Wrap up, light the candles and settle in for a Scandi-style Christmas Building update... The lead-up to Christmas is my favourite time of the year. I love winter fashion, roaring fires, candlelight and tasty one-pot suppers. The preparation for Christmas running up to the big day is more exciting than the day itself for me…
We were granted planning permission at the beginning of October and now we’re busy planning the build schedule to start early 2020. Follow @the_hudson_life on Instagram for regular updates. tuttiandco.com
Styling... I love interior styling, particularly for the autumn/winter season. Lots of candlelight, twinkly lights, Christmas decorations and the scent of a festive candle. I love to mix textures and bring together old and new to create that real traditional Christmas vibe, with a modern edge. We are currently living in rented accommodation whilst building our next home, so the feel this year is a little more Scandinavian. Monochrome accessories, handmade dried orange bunting, dried moss wreaths (which can be used in the home all year), metallic prints, and stone coasters, create a luxurious relaxed style. They’re inexpensive too. Star print, £5, Tutti & Co Moss wreath, £28, Tutti & Co
Wearing... I love winter fashion. Chunky jumpers, boots, jeans and a super soft scarf. I always pick a staple collection I can mix and match throughout the season, that can be dressed up and down depending on the occasion. My must have pieces this season: • The Ester parka from All Saints (£378) - a super stylish coat for winter warmth. A relaxed fit, exaggerated hood and leather zip pulls. Perfect for a weekend walk, school run, a winter break or skiing trip. I know the cold Sunday mornings watching my son play rugby will be a lot warmer in this. • Leather A line skirt from Massimo Dutti with buckle belt (£139), looks effortlessly stylish with a soft knit and sneakers - or add a shirt and heels for a Christmas party night out. • Hiking boots are bang on-trend this season, the ‘Huggy’ boots from Russell & Bromley (£225) are the perfect boot to wear whatever the weather. Pair with leather leggings, a skirt or skinny jeans. Luxuriously soft leather, wool lining and red hiking laces make these the perfect festive footwear.
Gifting… If you are anything like me, you will enjoy the giving of a gift more than receiving a gift. We have been busy in the studio, working on a range of gift ideas for Christmas. My top pick is the star square scarf, which can be styled in many ways - tied around your neck, bag or hair. It comes beautifully presented in a branded box. Wrap in our luxurious printed wrapping paper and it’s sure to be a winning gift this year. Star Square Scarf, £25, Tutti & Co
Loving… Les Beiges Eau de Teint by Chanel. This freshwater tint is lightweight, hydrating, and instantly refreshing. Composed of 75% water and created with micro-fluidic technology, micro droplets of pigment melt into the skin creating a radiant sheer coverage. A must have on your Christmas list. £48.

TOP SPORT
Best foot forward Alan Hodgkiss has a trainer collection worthy of its own fashion empire. Elysia Fryer checks in to talk trainers, Tynemouth and timeless sportswear
WHAT DO YOU DO AS A JOB? For most of my career, I’ve been in retail - mainly the sports fashion trade. For the last nine and a half years, I was the MD of the fashion division at JD Sports, which is basically Tessuti in the Metrocentre and Scotts Menswear on Northumberland Street. That’s the physical phase of the fashion division. I left them about a year ago, but I’m still a consultant - the odd day here and there. In the meantime, I’ve set up my own consultancy business called Business Doctors. It’s actually a franchise, so I’ve got the Newcastle area. We basically work with small business owners, helping them plan the growth of their business. TELL US ABOUT YOUR TRAINER COLLECTION? It’s an accidental collection really, in the sense that, when I was a lad - which was a long time ago - you would probably spend two or three months saving up for new shoes. I was brought up in the North West in Bolton and I would often go into Manchester. You’d set off on the train, it was a big event. You would go and buy your new trainers and then get back on the train and just look at them in the box. It was quite an emotional connection. I’d obviously wear them, but I kind of just accumulated them and collected them over the years. I’ve always bought what I liked. It’s not just trainers, it’s sportswear in general. I’ve got a lot of vintage tracksuits and loads of catalogues and posters, too. Obviously, once you get into it, you do go back over and collect other bits to fill in the gaps.
I’ve got a large amount of sportswear, tracksuits, trainers etc. There are some valuable pieces in there, but it wasn’t really about that to be honest, it was just a genuine love for them. ARE THE PIECES PART OF YOUR EVERYDAY WARDROBE? Yes, absolutely. I have to be honest, a lot of the trainers I haven’t worn - just because they become more valuable over time. But equally, there are quite a lot that I have worn, and certainly pretty much all of the sportswear. The fashion for those things tends to go round on a five or 10 year cycle, depending on what it is, so it means I can just bring them back out again. It’s sustainable... it’s environmentally friendly! That’s what I keep saying to my wife anyway… ANY INTERESTING PIECES IN THE COLLECTION? In the early 2000s, I was contacted by an old Adidas representative. Way, way back, Adidas used to be distributed by Umbro, and then there was another distributor called Peter Black. Umbro brought in the performance sportswear, and even back in the day, Adidas had a lifestyle/leisure collection, and that was brought in by Peter Black. When they used to get the samples in, one rep would get the right shoe and one rep would get the left shoe. I’m a sample size, so he contacted me and offered to sell all of his samples from over the years. They date back to the early 80s. One of the most famous pair was the Micropacer. It was a shoe that Adidas brought out in the 80s featuring a little
microcomputer, which ironically didn’t sell that well and didn’t quite catch on, but it had a real futuristic look about it even now. I’ve got an original pair of those. It has got a huge following. Back in the day, much of Adidas was made in Germany, so I’ve got some of those. I’ve also got some Nike shoes made in America. Nike was based in the North East for many years. Doxford was the UK head office for a long time, until about seven or eight years ago. So the brand has also been a big part of my collection - I’ve got a lot of Nike catalogues in there. HAVE YOU EVER BEEN APPROACHED BY ANYONE TO USE YOUR COLLECTION? There’s an Adidas Spezial Collection, which has developed a really niche following. They host exhibitions every now and then; the last one was about three years ago in Manchester. I donated about 30 pairs of my collection for the display, which went on to exhibit in Paris and Moscow as well. It was great! HOW DO PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT YOUR COLLECTION? I have a lot of contacts in the trade. WHAT DO YOU PLAN TO DO WITH IT? It is currently in my will to pass down to my son. He is interested in it, which is great
- my daughter is not interested in it at all. So, there are discussions to be had, but that’s the plan… DO YOU LIVE LOCALLY? I live in Tynemouth now, and it’s definitely a place I call home. In my spare time, I like to keep busy (and fit) with a little bit of running. I live in a great place to do so, making the most of our brilliant coastline. We’re very fortunate to live in Tynemouth. The food scene is great here. We lived here about 20 years ago, and then we moved away down to St Albans for four/five years - then we came back seven/eight years ago, and it just feels like home for us. Way back in the 80s, I came to university here. The reason I got into the trade was because I did a chemistry degree at Newcastle University, but I had a parttime job in a sports shop, it was called Monument Sports at the time - on Grainger Street. I left university with a chemistry degree, but didn’t really want to go down that path. The sports shop offered me a full-time job, which I took temporarily, and then 37 years later, here I am - with a house load of trainers! ARE YOU STILL COLLECTING? Yes. I only ever buy things I like or I would wear, primarily. That’s my main criteria.
I’ve got a large amount of sportswear, tracksuits, trainers… There are some valuable pieces in there, but it wasn’t really about that to be honest, it was just a love for them 34 luxe-magazine.co.uk

LUXE LOCKS
R I D E T H E WAV E With the party season upon us, we thought it would be a good idea to share something super glam with you. Christmas is the perfect time to step it up a notch and get yourself looking totally gorgeous for the festive season. If in doubt, wave it out! You literally can’t go wrong with gorgeous curls or a fab waved-out texture to transform your locks into something pretty special. Whether you have a mid-length bob or longer locks with layers, you can definitely make this look work for you. A root tonging technique rather than traditional tonging from the ends up, will give you a much more even curl from root to tip with
36 luxe-magazine.co.uk
long-lasting results. Choose your tong or wand size based on what kind of result you want, but our advice would always be to opt for a smaller tong and take bigger sections to ensure your look lasts. Both of these beauties have been blow-dried with volume before root tonging on a smallish tong, using a spritz of medium hold hairspray on each section as you go. For more curl definition, simply shake the curls through with your fingers; or for a smoother waved-out look, use a soft brush from root to tip before shaking from underneath. Hair accessories and ornamentation can also help take your look to the next level. We’ve used a deep velvet hair band with a brooch detail at the front, which looks fantastic!
This gorgeous image comes courtesy of our very own Jonathan Turner from Hooker & Young Jesmond, who is a finalist at this year’s British Hairdressing Awards for North Eastern Hairdresser of the Year. And the gongs don’t stop there… joining Jonathan as a finalist at this year’s event in London is Sophie Gibson from our Gosforth salon, who is a finalist in British Newcomer of the Year. Jonathan and Sophie are also finalists for British Colourist of the Year, and myself and Gary are nominees for the prestigious British Hairdresser of the Year! With four amazing nominations in the bag, it promises to be a great night for team H&Y, which will be made all the better if we can bring some silverware back to the North East.

Dr Steven Land of Novellus Aesthetics explains why it’s important to do your research before going under the needle… Unlike surgical procedures, non-surgical treatments have been poorly regulated in the beauty industry for many years, meaning that not all aesthetics practitioners are actually medically trained. The UK currently does not have legislation to prevent nonmedical professionals from delivering procedures such as anti-wrinkle fillers and lip injections, which are now more popular than ever before following the rise of social media and reality television. I’m sure you’ll have probably noticed the rise in aesthetic practitioners over the last couple of years, but it’s not because the number of doctors and nurses are on the rise. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. It’s far easier for your local beautician, hairdresser or girl next door to practice aesthetics after a one-day course, than it is for a doctor or nurse to spend five to ten years studying the body’s anatomy and how to safely treat it. Simply put, that’s the difference, though as I’m sure you can imagine, it goes a lot deeper than that. Beneath the skin, the face is made up of nerves, veins, arteries, lymph nodes and blood vessels, all of which must be avoided when injecting filler. Could you point out the location of each nerve ending and artery in your face? Then there’s the fact that there is no ‘one size fits all approach’, meaning that even if you think you know where you should be injecting filler, every face is different and therefore, so is every procedure. If filler is injected into the wrong place, say a blood vessel, you risk tissue death, which cannot be reversed. There are a few simple steps that can be taken to ensure your safety when getting aesthetics procedures, though. First and foremost, make sure you know your practitioner’s length of training, type of qualification and their experience. I would only ever recommend for a patient to see a fully-qualified doctor, nurse or dentist. Secondly, I recommend to never use a practitioner who promotes celebrity-influenced packages and holds social media competitions. Not only is this an irresponsible and unethical method of promotion, but such things are forbidden by the regulatory bodies for doctors, nurses and dentists. And last, but most certainly not least, check what insurance cover they have. If you have any further questions about making the right choice when it comes to an aesthetic procedure, please feel free to reach out to me, I’m always happy to help.

FESTIVE FEEL-GOOD
Finding Space
Have yourself a spa-tacular little Christmas Give the gift of rest and recuperation with a festive spa day, a feel-good shopping experience, or relaxing gifts. Time to wind down and treat yourself… go on, it’s Christmas!
The holiday season is a special time of year for most of us. A time where we revisit traditions, do special things and make an effort to consciously fill our days with good vibes, nice things and people that we love But what if the joy of the festive season could be for life, not just for Christmas? There are so many things you probably do over the holiday season that you could try doing at any point during the year to bring more flow, connection and contentment into your world... Write a note to someone you love – why wait for Christmas to dig out the address book and send a generic greeting to someone you love? At any point in the year when you think of them, or when you miss them, you could write and send a note. In this digital age, some unexpected snail mail is always a joy to receive! Connect with family traditions – play music from your childhood, bake your grandmother’s favourite cake, or share stories from your past. A walk down memory lane will connect you with the energy of your ancestors, which ground you and power up your energy, too. Feed your soul – gather your favourite ingredients and take some time to bake, or cook, your favourite food. Sit down for a celebratory dinner with your family or friends – sharing food and stories round a table always will do wonders for you. Catch up with friends – why wait for the holiday season to cram in social catch-ups ‘before the year is out’? Pepper your calendar with dates throughout the year that will give you quality time with people you love. Wear your best clothes – it’s always a good day to feel fabulous in a beautiful outfit that you love to wear. Open up your home – invite your neighbours over, or tell people to pop in when they’re passing, no matter what time of year it is. Have a PJ day – cancel your plans, cover up the clock, put your feet up and mooch about at home. Spend a simple day in nature – bring your Boxing Day or New Year’s Day walk into any random Sunday. Head to the beach or find a forest and take a relaxed stroll, whatever the weather. Celebrate a tree – those things that give you the very air you breathe - they’re good for you, you know! Sit quietly with one when you need to get some wisdom, pick fruit in the autumn, climb one with children in the summer, or plant a wishing or gratitude tree in the corner of your home. Count your blessings – every day is a good day to be grateful for all the wonderful things in your life. Have a wonderful Christmas – see you all in 2020. With love, Laura

TRY THIS
Bloody good results The region’s facial fans can now try the famous Platelet Rich Plasma treatment otherwise known as ‘the vampire facial’ on home turf. Scary gimmick or skin-saving godsend? Jessica Laing finds out…
THE LOW-DOWN… It’s the facial that stirs up all kinds of feelings; intrigue, confusion, delight, fear. Kim Kardashian kicked off the conversation a few years back when she posted a Instagram snap, mid-treatment, of her blood-stained face. And the beauty world hasn’t stopped talking about it since. Designed to soften lines, minimise pores and make skin plumper than a baby’s... (well nearly), the Platelet Rich Plasma treatment - otherwise known as ‘PRP’ - is supposed to be a game-changer for anyone over 30 (a milestone at which our natural collagen levels begin to drop) who wants their chops perking up without fillers or Botox. “But what on earth does it involve?” I hear you ask (shriek). And what’s up with all the blood? Does it hurt? Is it safe? Essentially, it’s a super-charged microneedling treatment that celebrates the glorious stuff running through our veins. And yes, when carried out by trained medical professionals, it’s very safe (only your own, natural plasma is injected into the skin, eliminating the chance of an allergic reaction). The science behind it is pretty nifty. Your blood is taken and separated into two: plasma - the clear, fluid part - and red and white blood cells. The plasma is then injected back into the body (the face, but sometimes under the eyes too), helping to stimulate collagen production and encourage a plumper, smoother, more youthful complexion. As you’d expect, the needle side of things causes a bit of bleeding - hence the treatment’s Halloween-ish nickname. But in reality, it’s far less gory than you might think. And definitely less harrowing than Kim K’s ghoulish pic. For mine, I head to Quay Aesthetics -
Whitley Bay’s new luxury skin clinic. Here, Bethany Hoyle, a trained specialist in semipermanent makeup, and husband, Dr James Hoyle, who is fully-qualified in cosmetic dentistry and facial aesthetics, offer a number of advanced non-surgical facial treatments, alongside cosmetic dentistry, health-boosting IV drips, semi-permanent makeup, LVL Lash Lift treatments and more. THE EXPERIENCE… The process itself isn’t exactly relaxing, I’ll be honest, but Emma and James do everything they can to make you feel as comfortable as possible. Before the PRP action begins, I’m whisked away to the clinic’s ‘relaxation’ room, where James takes my blood and Emma treats my chops to a layer or two of numbing cream. The treatment itself only lasts around 20 minutes, give or take, but you’re encouraged to kick-back and let the cream work its magic for at least 45 minutes. During this time, I advise taking full advantage of your surroundings, like I do. Sink into the heated massage chair, make your way through the stack of glossy magazines and savour a cuppa - or glass of fizz if you fancy it. Before you know it, you and your frozen face will be in the chair ready for the show to begin. Once there, all that’s left to do is recline and let James get to work and show off his needling skills. My ‘problem’ area is targeted the most; the slightly scarred skin on my cheekbones where my teenage acne set up camp. My forehead, chin and mouth area - the ‘smile line’ zone - are also given some attention. The pain varies, depending on whereabouts the needles strike. Somewhere in between a sharp scratch and a sting (especially when the plasma is released into the skin), in my opinion, the sensation isn’t too dissimilar to the feeling of getting a tattoo.
AFTER
It’s definitely not unbearable - I don’t wince or need to stop for a breather - but even with the numbing cream, it’s not the most pleasant feeling. The good news, though, is that each injection lasts seconds and, in reality, you don’t actually bleed that much. A few drops at the most. There’s nothing to be afraid of here, folks. THE RESULTS… Don’t believe the (bad) hype. The only thing gimmicky about this treatment is the name. At Quay Aesthetics, you’re in safe hands. Are there needles involved? Just a few. Is it uncomfortable? I’d be lying if I said no. But is it worth it? Yes. On reflection, post-treatment, my skin looked a hundred times better than I thought it would. Google Images told me I’d emerge from the chair sore, bloody and perhaps even a little bruised (note: stay away from the internet before you visit), but the reality was very different. Apart from a little redness, a bit of tenderness on the cheeks and one or
two teeny-tiny pin-prick marks on my chin and around the mouth (all of which had vanished by the next morning), my skin was in great shape. Noticeably smoother and more taut - especially on the forehead. And that was just after a couple of hours. The results got better as the weeks went on, which is one of PRP’s biggest selling points - it’s the gift that keeps on giving. As my skin began to heal itself (injecting plasma into the face tricks the body into thinking there’s been an injury and so ramps up the skin’s natural collagen-making process), my complexion appeared brighter and more even in tone. As a little extra, you’re given a small bottle of your very own plasma to use for posttreatment care - which I advise you use. Don’t fret - it might seem a bit gimmicky, but it looks, smells and works like any high-end serum you’d buy off the shelf. Our bodies are clever things. Fast-forward to the present day (over a month later) and my stubborn acne scars remain, of course, but the overall texture of my skin is considerably smoother and tighter. Friends, family and co-workers tell me my skin is ‘glowier’ and I’m convinced my pores are smaller, too. A real win if you’re a shiny-skinned gal like me. My verdict? Forget the bloodbath rumours and take the plunge. The long-lasting results are scarily good. PRP is priced at £180. For mature skin, or those with skin issues such as pigmentation, scarring or rosacea, Quay Aesthetics recommend three treatments over a six-week course. For those under 30, one treatment should provide results for up to nine months. Consultations are free. For more information, or to book, call 0191 691 1328 or visit quayaesthetics.com

EQUESTRIAN EXPERT
ON THE HOOF with Deborah Smith It’s officially Christmas shopping season now and I always think we equestrians do pretty well when it comes to finding luxe items for our wishlists… GLORIOUS GIFTS >> You can’t beat the fun (and crowds) of December shopping at Olympia and the Liverpool International Horse Show, but for a more relaxing approach, I’m heading online and also to some of the fabulous, North East regional Christmas fayres and shopping evenings. I’ve already pre-ordered for Oli and Strider from the new Lemieux winter wardrobe in super smart Hunter Green and vibrant Chilli Red, so I’m excited to see us all looking suitably festive very soon. I’m planning a seasonal shopping day out at Houghton Country Store, Heddon-on-theWall, before heading over to the Tynedale Gift Fair at Matfen Hall. Having test-driven the Stubbern Equisoft Girth, which is every bit as good as I’d hoped, I have a second one on my Christmas list so the boys have one each. And then for something very ‘luxe’… I’m in love with the Hermes Smallbox in recycled cardboard - with handles in canvas and bridle leather. This has the iconic ‘Hermes Sellier’ print and is way too smart to keep in the tack room! One thing I am banned from having on my Christmas list this year, is a new horse or foal! But if I was allowed a sneaky purchase, and if he was for sale, I would definitely be tempted by the lovely Erik (Merikanto). I mentioned Erik briefly last time after he had been awarded Elite Foal at the
Richmond Futurity grading. I asked his breeder and owner, Sally Banks-L’Amie how she got into breeding her first super foal: “I’m a 35-year-old doctor who worked as a radiologist, but now I run my own business, Belle Visage, where I am Clinical Director. After working long hours in the NHS, this change of career has given me the leisure time I wanted, to pursue my passion of horses. “I have been riding since I was four, got my first pony when I was eight, and progressed through British Riding Clubs to British Dressage and also BSJA with my various ponies and horses. “When numerous riding-related injuries stopped me competing, I had a highlytalented dressage mare and a retired show jumper, along with four Shetlands and my Scottie dogs, Hamish and Bruce. “My mum and I decided to put the dressage mare in foal. I’ve always taken a keen interest in the breeding of dressage horses, following the bloodlines of my favourite stallions. With help from Lorna Wilson at Elite Stallions, we decided that Morricone would be a good combination with my mare’s Sandro Hit and Nimmerdor ancestry, and she was put in foal in June 2018. “In September 2018, I saw a broodmare advertised with fantastic breeding. We realised that our knowledge of breeding was limited and, as my mare is registered Oldenburg, we contacted the society for any info they could give and found them

to be an excellent source. “My mum attended their Winter Meeting at the Oldenburg Verband HQ in Vechta, Germany last December, where she learned a lot of very important and useful information and met some fantastic people from all over the world with the same passion as us. “With the information she brought back with her, we had got the bug! In April we bought a fabulous three-year-old Westfalen mare with most of the top German bloodlines in her ancestry. In June, we found a very elegant Dutch mare, sharing the same breeding as Dream Boy, who had just competed at the World Equestrian Games and will be on the Dutch Olympic team for Tokyo 2020. “On 5 June, our beautiful Merikanto (Erik) was born. The period running up to the birth was as scary as it was exciting; researching the birthing of foals, getting the stable ready, buying predictor kits, putting CCTV in the barn etc. “We were both there for the birth and helped bring the little chap into the world. We thought he was something rather special with the most fantastic temperament, he is so laid back and loving. “Little did we know that six weeks later he would be awarded Elite Foal at the British

INSPIRING FINDS
A happy home ibbi is about all things vintage, unique and hand-crafted. An online treasure chest uncovering the wonders of the world. Elysia Fryer finds out more
Lovely things inspired by lovely places, made by lovely people. Based in rural Northumberland, ibbi is an online store that will bring your home interiors to life in more ways than one. Whether it’s a throw, ceramics, tableware or embroideries, the uniqueness of an ibbi piece is sure to start a conversation - but the real story is in its origin. ibbi is all about the journey. All products have a story to tell. Hand-painted ceramics come from Potterswork - hidden away in the quiet suburb of Muizenberg, Cape Town; tableware is inspired by the pristine blue waters of Southern India; and bespoke basketry makes its way over from Collaborative Craft Projects, Zimbabwe. The journey is vast; and for founders, Eliza Browne-Swinburne, Anna Kirkup and Claire McAlpine, it’s important to go straight to the source, working closely with designers and producers from start to finish. “We work with small cooperatives and family businesses; people who are creating their products in safe, secure environments in India and Africa,” explains Claire. “The artisans we work with use traditional skills passed down from generation to generation, and their designs are often deeply rooted in their country’s traditions,” she adds. From the initial designs and the love and dedication that goes into producing these quaint pieces overseas, to the running of the business back home in rural
Northumberland, care and consideration is key - every step of the way. It’s a real passion for everyone involved. A dream turned into reality… “Claire, Anna and I all had children at the same school,” explains Eliza. “We rowed together at Hexham Boat Club too - so we were all great friends. “We often talked of our desire to run our own business selling carefully-sourced ‘good things’ for the home. There were many plans and discussions, and when the opportunity to travel to India together to meet artisans arose, we grabbed it!” The idea was born in Northumberland and inspired by the wonders of the world, but the rolling, North East countryside was always going to be ibbi’s home. “Eliza and Anna’s families have lived in Northumberland for a long time,” says Claire. “I came here as my husband was working in the North East, but how lucky we are to live in such a wonderful part of the world, and to have found each other and share our passions,” she adds. “The huge skies, the deserted beaches, and the rugged, rural landscape. What’s not to love?” The trio travel far and wide in search of creative ideas and to meet suppliers, but home is a constant source of inspiration, too. “We take huge inspiration from the wild Cheviots, the stunning coastline and the winding rivers this beautiful county has to offer,” says Anna.
“We can often be found photographing our vintage throws in the sand dunes of Embleton Bay, where the light can be so dramatic - just perfect for our lifestyle imagery.” Three is definitely not a crowd when it comes to combining the creative minds of Eliza, Anna and Claire. Every source, item and campaign is born out of an idea bounced between the three artistic ladies. ibbi was brought to life because of a shared interest, but unique style and personality is also evident and reflected in the collection. “We all love colour. We are very anti-dull, drab beige,” says Claire. “You can see this in all of our collections; vibrant ceramics from South Africa, pretty block-printed tableware from Jaipur, richly-glazed Tamegroute pottery from Morocco and beautifully bold kantha throws from West Bengal. There’s something for all tastes, but we understand that everyone has a different style, so we’re extremely practical with what we supply. “We’re not about entire makeovers. That’s why we love mixing the old with the new. We love the power of colour, and how a few, carefully-sourced pieces can add so much personality to a space. “Vibrancy and authenticity brings happiness to any home.” The ladies’ love of all things cool, colourful and crafty has opened up opportunities and has allowed them to make creative connections across the globe. An artistic journey that has taken them on a worldwide journey, collecting as they go. “We first started travelling to India back in 2012 and were instantly struck by the vibrant and beautiful colours everywhere,” says Eliza. “We now travel to where our suppliers are; namely Jaipur and Jodhpur where there is
tons of inspiration for every collection,” she adds. “In India, we draw on traditional designs to inspire our block print collection, which includes tablecloths and napkins. The Indians are incredibly skilled artisans and the best creatives, so encouraging our team in India to be a part of the design process is really important and helps us when choosing block designs and colours as they really do know what works well.” Checking in with suppliers is all part of the day job at ibbi, but in the current climate, environmental sustainability is just as important. “Initially, we were travelling to India once or twice a year, and to Africa once a year,” says Anna. “Now we make sure we get the balance right. It’s important to travel, to source new products and to make sure we tell the stories behind our products, but it’s equally as important - from an environmental point of view - that we don’t travel unnecessarily. “We work closely with our suppliers, who know us well now, so a lot of our work can be done via email and Skype. Just checking in as much as we can. “We do, however, always try to meet our suppliers face-to-face before we place an order with them; that way we can introduce ourselves and they can get an idea of what we’re about.” Travel is a fundamental part of what makes ibbi so unique. Not only does it allow the team to pick up inspiration from some of the most spectacular creatives across the globe, but it allows them to help bring business to life in smaller communities – uncovering some fascinating stories along the way. “Chris, who runs Potterswork in Cape Town is a real character,” Claire smiles. “She’s larger than life and determined to >>

She adores her craft and has transformed the lives of all who work for her, by giving them the skills to create their bold, beautiful ceramics in such a safe and secure environment. “Deepti, based in India, is a spectacular designer with an eye for detail and an amazing skill with colour. “She sources our kantha throws - and always makes us the most delicious veggie curry for lunch when we visit! “Rahul and his small family business in Jaipur introduced us to the wonderful world of intricate block print, which still, to this day, uses the same traditional skills passed down through the generations. “Visiting Jaipur and seeing the vast swathes of gloriously-printed cotton blowing in the hot Indian sunshine is very special indeed.” Much of ibbi’s inspiration may come from warmer climates, but there’s a year-round source feeding into the online store - and the autumn/winter collection is just as wonderful as the rest. “Morocco delivers more earthy tones, and our trip to Tamegroute, on the edge of the Sahara Desert, fulfilled its promise,” says Anna. “This is where we found inspiration for the deep rich green tableware from the clay of the Draa riverbed. “These pieces are rustic and unique, so a perfect complement to the rest of our autumn/winter collection. You can just imagine steaming butternut squash soup being served out of one of our bowls.” Sustainable interiors are oh-so important in the current design market something evident in this year’s autumn/ winter collection. “We have so many beautiful new collections for the cooler months,” says Eliza. “For years, our customers have been asking for baskets. With that in mind, we now have our first collection of rattan furniture from skilled artisans in Zimbabwe. “The organisation we are working with only uses the very finest, locally sourced and renewable resources and expert weavers from local communities, to produce the highest quality goods. “We also have gorgeous block-printed tableware from India in the prettiest festive colours - and lots of stunning ceramics to brighten the home over the winter months.” The festive season is always a time for creatives to flourish, bringing a bit of artistic flair to the home as well as the studio. “We don’t have much time to worry too much about huge decorative displays at home over Christmas,” says Anna. “But I tend to go for lots of warm white fairy lights inside and out, and always have a locally sourced Norway Spruce (it reminds me of my childhood). “A beautiful wreath is also a must - Flowers Unlimited in Northumberland have some fabulous arrangements.” When they’re not travelling, checking in with creative companions overseas, or keeping up with ibbi’s inspiring new collections, Eliza, Anna and Claire like to be reminded why they chose Northumberland as the business’s - and their own - home. Why the North East is a source of
inspiration, a beautiful base and an ever-evolving place to explore… “We always like a quick bite to eat at our locals, The Beaumont and Bouchon Bistrot in Hexham, as well as a trip to Cook House in Ouseburn with the family,” says Claire. “A fireside perch at The Rat Inn in Anick is always good,” adds Eliza. “And the panto at the Theatre Royal in Newcastle is an absolute Christmas must!” she adds. “If the Royal Northern Sinfonia are playing at the Sage in Gateshead, we wouldn’t miss it for the world,” Anna jumps in. “But best of all,” says Claire. “We’ve got beautiful beach walks on our doorstep, whatever the weather. It doesn’t get much better than Embleton and Bamburgh! How lucky we are…” ibbidirect.co.uk
The ibbi team and their collection highlights CLAIRE >> The vintage charpoys or Indian day beds. We source the original carved frames in Jodhpur and we have them re-strung there too. Charpoys are like hammocks on legs and they are not only incredibly beautiful, but they’re amazingly comfortable too - this is probably the reason why mine always has a dog asleep on it! ANNA >> The Margo Platter - one of our best-selling ceramics created for us in South Africa. They’re so pretty and great for serving cakes or canapés. The best thing, however, is the people who create them for us. At Potterswork in South Africa, there are 25 talented artisans who have been carefully trained by the business’s owner, and they’re able to support their extended families though their work. Their colour palettes burst with strong reds and yellows, deep earthy oranges and all manner of uplifting blues and greens - all reflective of the flora of the Cape. They’re just stunning. ELIZA >> Our vintage kantha throws. I’ve bought them for all of my children and they absolutely love them. The throws are hand stitched by talented ladies in West Bengal. The throws are created by layering vintage saris, which are then hand stitched together with a kantha stitch. They are bold and beautiful and they’re incredibly soft to touch. The artisans who make the throws work in their local villages and don’t have to travel to big cities to find employment. The ladies get to live and work locally, meaning they can take their children to school each day - it’s very important to us.

FEAST FESTIVE from Roots Farm Shop in East Rounton and famous pork pies come from Petch Butchers in Great Ayton. Surrounding them, you’ll find bread, antipasti, pickles, pastries and everything that screams Christmas comfort food. Eucalyptus and holly from the garden decorates the table, while homemade wreaths and locally-felled Christmas trees bring the festive furnishings to life. It’s dreamy and totally delicious. But just how do you juggle family life, running a home and steering the ship of a very busy business, with throwing the finest festive parties? Wendy guides us on our way…
Seasonal supper is served Christmas is a time for family, friends, food and fizz-fuelled festivities. It’s a time where we allow ourselves to steer away from our busy schedules and fill our diaries with social events. Elysia Fryer catches up with Wendy Deans for party season tips…
It’s party season, there’s no other time quite like it, and we all want a slice of the action - whether we’re the host or partygoer. For Wendy Deans, Managing Director at Popcorn Catering, Christmas is less about ‘switch-off time’ and more about hosting at home. Catering for the stars and running a business on the road is the day job, but over the festive season it’s about gathering the gang and pulling off another cracker of a Christmas party. Wendy lives with her family of four fleeting grown-up boys, husband Dixie, and a whole host of dogs, kittens, chickens and horses. It’s a busy home to say the least, and one that never stops when it comes to entertaining - particularly as the dark nights draw in and the fire is lit for winter. As a regular when it comes to Wendy’s social soirees, I’m catching up with the star

WENDY’S FESTIVE PARTY TIPS >> One of the easiest ways to feed hungry partygoers is to serve bowl-food. You are then not limited to the number of chairs you can fit around your table. It’s Christmas, you don’t want to upset anyone! Invite them all and follow these tips for easy party food… Choose something your guests can eat or pick at - with just a fork. Shop bought food is fine too - pouches of rice and grains make life so very easy. Choose something you are confident at making ideally something that can be made the day before, so you are able to enjoy your stress-free party preparations. Two or three different options are perfect as you can vary them to suit any guest’s special diets without them feeling that they are being difficult. VEGAN & VEGGIE OPTIONS >> - Veggie haggis hash – see recipe… - Vegan buddha bowl – can be made as a cold salad, adding hot falafel or pitta. - Grain bowls – with various toppings such as avocado, halloumi, brazil nut and watercress rissoles. - Roast cauliflower and red pepper hummus – served with herb dressing and pomegranate seeds. - Veggie chilli – an easy pleaser. There are tons of lovely recipes out there. Jamie Oliver does a great one using lentils. FISH OPTIONS >> - Traditional fish pie – make sure it’s quite firm with plenty of fish and less potato. I’d recommend making your own mash, as shop-bought can be quite sloppy after
cooking. Stand the pie for 10-minutes before serving. It makes it much easier to portion neatly. - Fish finger sandwich – using lovely fresh rolls and homemade tartare sauce. I don’t know many people - young and old - who don’t get over-excited when these come out. - Teriyaki salmon – serve with noodles for a light option. Small skewers of salmon help with the portion control. WHITE MEAT >> - Chicken and chorizo butterbean cassoulet – a super dish for the slow cooker, and oh-so tasty! - Stir fry chicken with noodles – served with black sesame seed garnish. - Pulled pork – slow roast pork shoulder (leave it on a low oven all afternoon), served on a brioche bun with apple or BBQ sauce. - Kitson’s Butchers pork pies – pick these up from Five Houses Farm Shop & Kitchen in Crathorne. Serve with gourmet peas (frozen peas cooked gently in stock, with a generous knob of butter and mint sauce). RED MEAT >> Everyone loves the old favourites when it comes to red meat. The slow cooker will be your best friend here. - Cottage pie – a safe option as long as it’s not too sloppy. Again, leave to stand before serving, and make your own mash if you can. Carrots or no carrots, you can decide. - Posh shepherd’s pie – use lamb shoulder cooked for six hours the day before. Shred the meat with lamb gravy to make the base, then top with mash and cook for at least another hour. - Haggis hash – see recipe… - Beef chilli – try using stewing steak instead of mince and slow cook for hours so it’s falling apart. Anything you can leave to slow cook until party time is a winner, it will save you space in the fridge! Garnish with sour cream, guac and tortilla chips. DON’T FORGET… - Larger quantities in larger containers take longer to cook than you may be used to when cooking at home. - Keep utensils separate for meat and veggie food to avoid cross-contamination. - Do as much prep as you can the day before, ideally pre-make all hot food. Make sure you have enough space in
cook ahead of the festive season at their beautiful country home in Hutton Rudby, North Yorkshire. The annual Christmas party here has, over the years, become quite the celebration often the beginning of the festivities and that first mince pie-munching, mulled wine-sipping, ‘out of office’ moment. It’s a glorious gathering of young, old - and everything in between. A place to sip, celebrate and be merry. Wendy has cooked her way around the globe and knows a thing or two when it comes to quality produce - but Christmas at home is all about proper Yorkshire goodies - keeping it as lovely and as local as possible. A fabulous feast table decorated with festive accessories and foliage from the garden sits centre stage in the reception room as the fizz flows and the fire crackles in the corner. It’s a feast table worthy of a Hollywood movie. Local meats come from Five Houses Farm Shop down the road, cheese comes

FEAST FESTIVE your fridge to store safely. - Have garnish handy. Chopped herbs, strawberries, grapes, pears, apples, basil leaves, rosemary, sage, parsley. All cover a multitude of sins! - Ready-made food is perfectly acceptable to serve. Rice pouches make life so easy and have great flavours too. Life is too short sometimes! - Veggie food is often eaten by most people, don’t just do enough for the three people you know about. - Lay food out in similar containers on your central island and people can help themselves. - Cook things you like yourself and you are used to making. It’s not a competition, people are coming to see you and have a good time, not to judge the food. - Keep an emergency cheese selection in the fridge, quick and easy snacks for unexpected guests. Also impossible to mess up however many glasses of wine you’ve had! - Strong paper or bamboo plates/bowls are great for bigger numbers. - Most important of all is to ENJOY your party. Don’t be a slave all evening… you’re here for the festivities too!

Haggis hash
Brazil nut & watercress rissoles
(Serves 4 as a casual supper, or more for a starter) - Ideal served as party bowl food as a smaller serving - Use veggie haggis and veggie stock cube as a vegan alternative (without the cheese), it will not keep its shape so well, but still super delicious - Great for New Year celebrations
(serves 4 for a starter or mini burgers, or 2 for a generous main course) - These can be pre-made and reheated in the oven or microwave as and when needed, or eaten cold with cheese and relish as a snack. - To make vegan-friendly, replace the egg with a nut butter of choice, but take care during cooking as they are fragile and can fall apart.
Ingredients 1 x pack McSween Haggis (400g size packet) or veggie haggis in 1 inch cubes 300g cubed and peeled waxy potatoes 300g cubed swede 1 x large white onion, sliced 2 tablespoons olive oil Salt and pepper 1/2 pot beef stock 150g cheddar cheese Worcestershire sauce Fresh cranberry sauce to garnish Method Preheat the oven to 200°C. Parboil the potatoes and swede until almost cooked but firm. Meanwhile sauté the onions in a large pan with the oil. Add the potatoes and swede and cook on a low heat with the lid on for around 5 minutes. Transfer to a low casserole dish or oven-proof china dish and layer with cubed haggis (not too deep). Add the stock, cover with foil and return to oven and cook for around 20 minutes, or until the potatoes are cooked through. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Sprinkle with cheese and finish either in the oven or under a hot grill until cheese is melted and golden. Serve garnished with a spoonful of homemade cranberry sauce, a splash of Worcestershire sauce and some chopped parsley.
Ingredients 100g Brazil nuts, roughly chopped 1 x egg 1 x large onion, finely chopped 1 clove garlic 1 x packet or large bunch of fresh watercress (save some for garnish) 50-100g natural fresh breadcrumbs Olive oil Sea salt and ground black pepper Vegetable stock cube or melt pot Method Sauté the garlic and onions in the olive oil, taking care not to colour the garlic. Season with sea salt and black pepper. Add the stock cube with a small amount of water and stir through. Take off the heat, add the chopped watercress and stir until it is wilted. Mix should be quite dry, so put back on the heat to evaporate any juices. Transfer into a plastic bowl and allow to cool a little. Add the beaten egg, Brazil nuts and 50g breadcrumbs to make the mix dry enough to form into balls. Divide into suitable shapes – 8 balls to make rissoles if you have access to a deep fryer, 4 larger shapes to pan fry to make a burger. Handle with care at this stage and during the cooking. Deep fry or pan fry until crisp and golden, then transfer to oven and cook through to the centre for 5-10 minutes. Serve with a spicy tomato sauce or homemade relish of your choice. Garnish with spare watercress.

POWER PUDS
A sweet little Christmas Jessica Laing heads to 21, Newcastle, for a taste trip around Europe, discovering some of the restaurant’s fabulous festive desserts…
One of the (many) things I love about Christmas is that it’s a holiday steeped in tradition. For just one day only, we come together to celebrate family, swap gifts, and stuff our faces with food that has a special place in our hearts this time of year. Love it or loathe it, when it comes to dessert on the big day, Christmas pudding is the star of the show in most UK households. But what about other countries? How do they finish off their yuletide feasts? It appears you can find out for yourselves at 21 this Christmas. Here, pastry chef, Helen Doyle, and her team, create a number of festive favourites from across Europe - a range of showstopping desserts that go beyond boozy puds and brandy butter. I recently stopped by to put a few of them to the test (it’s a hard job, I know), eager

to discover if the sweet traditions of other lands might inspire me to bring something new to the Christmas table this year…
United Kingdom… Christmas pudding Did you know? Christmas puds are believed to date back to the Middle Ages. Referred to as ‘plum puddings’, they were filled with meat and poultry until people decided to start adding apples, candied fruit, raisins, sugar and spices - and the sweet Christmas pudding we know today was born. Traditionally, puddings are made on, or immediately after, the Sunday before Advent - known as ‘stir-up Sunday’ - where everyone in the household stirs from east to west (the route the Three Wise Men took on their quest to find the newborn king), while making a Christmas wish.

in texture than I’d anticipated, with no overpowering aniseed-y taste - despite there being gobs of marzipan hidden in the dough. I can only detect a slight hum of cinnamon - which is never a bad thing. It’s slightly sweet, not overly buttery and pulls apart beautifully - making it a perfect sharing option. Dipped with coffee, it’s surprisingly good.
Tasting notes… Unlike some shop-bought puds, 21’s isn’t overly sticky or stodgy. It’s wonderfully light and moist in texture, packed with juicy raisins, currants and mixed peel, citrus, apple and carrot, plus a flurry of mixed spice for the unmistakable taste of Christmas. Soaked in homemade brandy sauce, its deep, rich, boozy flavour is delicious - and not at all sickly. Make room for this one.
Sweden… Rice pudding with red berry sauce Did you know? Swedish rice pudding - known as ‘risgrynsgröt’ or ‘julegrot’ - has been a Christmas staple for centuries. Made and left out for Santa on Christmas Eve, traditionally, it’s served cold with whipped cream and vanilla, finishing with a single almond and berry sauce. Whoever finds the hidden nut in their bowl is said to be blessed with good luck. Tasting notes… I’d never considered eating rice pudding on Christmas Day - but 21’s take on the Swedish go-to dessert blew me away and now it’s all I can think about. Made with risotto rice, full-fat milk, double cream, sugar, lemon and vanilla (the real stuff you can see the specks), it’s sweet, oozy and comforting. Here, it’s served with a red berry sauce and a sprinkling of toasted almonds - a crunchy nod to the Swedes’ age-old tradition.
France… Bûche de Noël Did you know? Bûche de Noël - also known as a Yule log was first made back in the 19th century. Essentially a roll of light sponge cake, covered in either chocolate or icing, they
NOV/DEC19
were made to resemble the logs burning in the hearths of homes all over France, helping to mark the winter solstice and the countdown to Christmas. They’re usually served with one end cut off and bark-like texture is produced by dragging a fork through the icing. Icing sugar usually makes an appearance too, resembling snow, as do mini mushrooms, made of meringue or marzipan. Tasting notes… 21’s sophisticated nod to traditional Bûche de Noël is a chocolate-lover’s dream. Made with high quality milk chocolate, it’s lighter-than-air, with a velvety-soft sour cherry mousse surprise inside. If you’re afraid of heavy Christmas desserts, this one is for you. Best served with sour cherries and homemade chantilly cream, it’s a posh pud that looks the part and tastes irresistibly good. Don’t expect to find any leftovers come Boxing Day morning.
Italy… Panettone Did you know? Dating back to the early 20th century, panettone is believed to originate from Milan (though some argue Verona) and many say its name is a derivative from ‘pane del Toni’, meaning ‘Tony’s bread’. It’s said to be the result of panic when a medieval court chef - Tony - had nothing
to serve for dessert, and so invented this thrice-risen dough laced with tons of butter, sultanas and peel. Fresh from the oven, traditionally, this tall and mighty loaf is hung upside down to cool, so its burnished dome doesn’t collapse. Tasting notes… I’m a huge panettone fan - and 21’s didn’t disappoint. It’s pillowy, sweet and brioche-like, laced with high-quality vanilla, raisins, chunks of candied mixed peel and fresh orange juice for a zesty tang that you can really taste. Don’t expect a ton of spice, but if you have a sweet tooth prepare to jump for joy; its sweet crust, made with crunchy nibs of sugar, is really special. You’ll find some of these fabulous festive desserts on 21’s Christmas menus, or you can buy direct from the restaurant. For more information, or to make an order, call 0191 222 0755.
Germany… Stollen Did you know? Germany’s Christmassy take on fruit bread - sometimes referred to as ‘christstollen’ or ‘weihnachtsstollen’ - harks back to the 1400s, when bakers would make brick-like shapes of dough using just flour, oats and water in preparation for fasting during advent. Today, traditional stollen is a dense, enriched bread, studded with candied fruits, nuts and peel, made with plenty of butter, spices and booze. Legend says that stollen, in its typical shape with a thick white layer of icing sugar and/or marzipan, symbolised the swaddled Jesus Christ. In Germany, it’s served with - or dipped in - coffee or mulled wine. Tasting notes… I’ll be honest - I don’t think I’ll ever be the biggest stollen fan. I think it’s the marzipan and butter that turn me off. But my family love the stuff - and I’m sure they’d have lots of praise for 21’s version. It’s far lighter

YES CHEF
FOOD MATTERS with chef Michael Wignall… Earthy dishes, Christmas cooking and awards aplenty for our new culinary columnist
There are so many exciting things happening in the north this winter, and it’s wonderful to be a part of it. My wife Johanna and I are well-settled at The Angel Inn at Hetton and we’re very much looking forward to a proper Yorkshire Christmas. We have big plans for The Angel, and it’s safe to say, the most wonderful time of the year is definitely one of the best times to pop in and see us. MY FOOD TRAVELS >> My family and I had a great meal at The Parkers Arms in Newton-In-Bowland recently. The menu is really interesting – definitely not your normal pub grub. I had soused Scottish herring to start, served with creamed horseradish potato salad – it was excellent. Followed by a beautifully cooked pork chop, with proper chips. With the Rugby World Cup and Japan in the limelight recently, I’ve been reflecting on our trip there back in 2016. It was one of the most fascinating countries I have ever visited. I have long-admired Japanese cooking; this comes across in my own cooking. A standout meal for me and one that I count as my top three meals ever, was restaurant Hajime in Osaka. In fact, the following year, they were awarded three Michelin stars, which came as no surprise. The signature dish, ‘chikyu’ (planet earth) is made of up to 110 different vegetables, grains and herbs, artfully arranged around a shellfish foam to represent the land and sea. Absolutely superb!
TRY THIS >> This year, we’re steering away from tradition and having chicken for our Christmas lunch. I’m not a massive fan of turkey… for me you just cannot beat a good roast chicken.
Poached and roast chicken, cranberry gel, shitake mushroom, salsify, bread sauce, chicken cracker Serves 4
ON MY PLATE >> It’s my favourite time of year – game season. Our menu is an abundance of local game now, all shot within 10 miles of The Angel. The likes of partridge and sika deer all making an appearance. I’m also using a lot of Jerusalem artichoke, crosnes, cep mushrooms, wood sorrel and of course, pumpkins. As for fruits, apples and pears are now in season and we’re also working with fresh yuzu from Japan. During my time in Devon, we worked with wonderful gardeners to grow as much of our own fruit and vegetables as possible. We thought we’d try to grow our own yuzu, assuming that it would not come to fruition. Dartmoor can sometimes experience its own microclimate and to our delight, we managed to grow our own fresh yuzu. If you haven’t tasted it, yuzu is a citrus fruit with a sharp taste a little like grapefruit. It’s beautiful.
rich culinary history and we’re extremely proud that it is considered one of the finest places to eat in the country. The Michelin star comes hot on the heels of the AA Hospitality Awards, which took place in London just two weeks earlier and saw The Angel receive four coveted rosettes for the cooking. The AA awards four rosettes to restaurants that “exhibit intense ambition, a passion for excellence, superb technical skills, and remarkable consistency” – something that our team, both front and back of house, strive for every day.
MY WORLD >> Autumn was an incredibly exciting one for The Angel Inn at Hetton; we were awarded with a Michelin star in the Michelin UK & Ireland Guide 2020. I have been fortunate enough to have been awarded a Michelin star in the past, but nothing beats receiving this prestigious award in a restaurant you can call your own. What a feeling! Only 187 restaurants in the UK and Ireland boast Michelin stars, so we feel truly grateful to be counted amongst the finest establishments in the country - and so quickly after taking over the reins at The Angel. It’s an exceptional property with a

These two awards show how far we’ve come in the 12 months since collecting the keys for our treasured Angel; and we hope it gives our guests a taste of what’s to come in the months and years to follow. Looking ahead to 2020, we’re delighted that plans for our forthcoming refurbishment of The Angel will be going ahead throughout January, so we will be closed during that period. We are very excited to be giving this beautiful building a facelift, while keeping many of the original features and charming qualities loved by our guests. angelhetton.co.uk

With a bit of strategic planning, now is the perfect time to save some money with a host of handmade Christmas gifts It’s nearly 10 years since we hosted our first course, and as a gardening business, we naturally expected May to September to be our busiest months of the year – oh, how wrong we were. Our seasonal courses are all about getting a head start with Christmas, way before the panic shopping commences. We’ll have it all wrapped up (literally) by 12 December.
22 November: Stress-free Xmas A day spent baking, preserving and freezing gets the larder and freezer stocked up for the festive period. You can be ‘the host/hostess with the mostest’ without the stress as you pull desserts out the freezer and serve melt-in-the-mouth mince pies made by your own fair hands. 24 November: Stir up Sunday There is nothing quite like the aroma of soaking dried fruit in alcohol. The scents make the house feel so festive, giving you that warm fuzzy feeling as soon as you step through the door.
OUR ‘FRAZZLE-FREE’ CHRISTMAS CALENDAR >>
FAIL-SAFE RECIPES TO SEE YOU THROUGH THE SEASON >>
Early November Make the most of the plethora of ‘cheap as chips’ small spring bulbs being sold off now: muscari, crocus, hyacinths and dwarf narcissi. Small teacups filled with crocuses, cut glass vases bulging with hyacinths sitting atop dark pebbles - or even simple enamel bowls crammed with scented narcissi - all look fantastic filled with bulb fibre and only the little noses of emerging bulbs poking out of the soil. Surround them with florist’s moss; much like a new winter coat, it makes everything look better. Dampen the soil initially and then water again once the bulbs are growing, but only if the soil feels dry - please don’t drown the poor things. Place the pots/cups/glasses in a closed cupboard in a cool shed or garage until the bulbs have rooted. Once shoots appear, they can be handed on as gifts, wrapped in pretty cellophane and tied with ribbon.
Cranberry, pistachio and white chocolate stars These can be made ahead of time and frozen - perfect for when those unexpected guests pop by!
NOV/DEC19
Ingredients: 100g caster sugar 100g dried cranberries 240g butter at room temperature 240g plain flour 1 tbsp vanilla extract 85g white chocolate, cut into small chunks 50g shelled pistachios, crushed in a bag with a rolling pin Method: Place the cranberries and sugar in a food processor and pulse briefly. Using a mixer with a paddle attachment or a hand whisk, cream the butter and sugar/cranberry mixture together until light and fluffy.
Add vanilla, flour, chocolate chunks and crushed pistachio pieces and bring together using the back of a wooden spoon to form a dough. Do not overwork or your shortbread will be tough. Either roll the dough into a long log at this stage and wrap in a double layer of cling film and freeze unbaked, or roll the dough to 3/4cm and use a star cutter to cut out stars. Place well apart on a flat baking tray and bake at 150°C for 25-30 minutes depending on the size of your stars. Allow to cool for 15 minutes on the tray before removing to a rack to crisp up. Either store in a tin for up to three weeks or freeze in tupperware containers.
OLD FASHIONED - THE PERFECT WINTER WARMER >> This tried and tested recipe comes from a lovely customer, Daniel Scrivener from Brighton, who refers to me as his ‘marmalade dealer’! Use a whisky tumbler and pour a generous double measure of bourbon (Maker’s Mark seems to work well). Add 2-3 dashes of Angostura bitters, then 2-3 teaspoons of Linnels Farm Ardbeg Marmalade (depending how sweet you like it). Add one decent-sized ice cube. Stir vigorously until the ice has fully melted. Add a strip of orange rind and 2-3 more ice-cubes. Stir gently, let it chill for a minute, then serve. Cheers!
RICH PICKINGS FROM THE GARDEN >> Pickings are few and far between at this time of year, but somehow that makes them all the more valued. Dusky sloes after a night-time frost can be popped in a bottle of cheap gin with some sugar and placed in a dark cupboard. Remember to shake it every week and it will be ready to drink for Christmas. Always make an extra jar - you can give it away in small bottles when you unexpectedly need that extra present. Late variety apples such as Ashmead’s Kernel and Catshead can still be sitting on the tree until

WINE TIME
Perfect pastry Satisfy the sweet tooth with a Christmas crumble paired with fab fruity tipples Dessert is on everyone’s Christmas list. Celebrate the most wonderful season of all with something oh-so sweet at Chadwicks Inn Maltby. Head chef, Steve Lawford talks us through his choux bun pudding, while expert sommelier, Lee Tolley guides us through some superb wines to complement the dish.
Sweet pairings >> Lallier Grande Réserve Grand Cru, Champagne, France NV (65% Pinot Noir, Chardonnay 35%) 12.5% ABV
Lallier, founded in 1906, is a small top quality vineyard sourcing the grapes exclusively from officially classified Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards. Pale lemon in colour with intense fine fizz and brioche notes. All you would expect from a fantastic award-winning champagne.
Choux Bun, Granny Smith Apple, Crumble & Maple Syrup >> Serves 4 Choux Bun ingredients 100ml milk 100ml water 10g sugar 2g table salt 80g butter 125g plain flour 8 eggs Method Add milk, water, sugar, salt and butter to a pan and bring to the boil. Add flour and cook out. Remove from heat and mix in the eggs, one by one. Store mixture in a piping bag in the fridge. Pipe onto baking parchment and cover with a disc of craquelin. Bake for 30 minutes at 170°C. Remove and cool on a wire rack.
Craquelin ingredients 280g butter 335g light brown sugar 310g plain flour Method Cream together butter and sugar. Add flour. Roll between parchment to 5mm thickness.
Sorbet ingredients 500g apple puree 250g water 175g sugar 75g glucose syrup Method Add all ingredients to a pan and bring to a simmer. Pass through a sieve and churn in an ice cream maker.
Custard ingredients 400ml whole milk 600ml cream 1 vanilla pod 215g egg yolk 150g sugar 30g glucose syrup Method Add milk, cream and vanilla to a pan and bring to a simmer. Whisk the egg yolks, sugar and glucose to a sabayon. Whisk into the milk mixture. Cook to 82°C, pass through a sieve and cool. (We charge the custard with CO2 in a canister to foam it). To serve… Remove bottom of choux buns and hollow out. Fill with crumble mix, some poached diced apple and sorbet, followed by custard foam. Garnish with butterfly sorrel.
Moscato Passito ‘Palazzina’, (Il Cascinone), Piemente, Italy 2014 (100% Moscato Bianco) 14% ABV
The fruit for this wine is hand-harvested in late October, about a month after usual harvest. The fruit is then dried for 45 days where 40% of its weight is lost, leaving a concentrated sweet juice when pressed. This wine is sweet with honey flavours, citrus with an almost toffee apple hint. A rich and moreish dessert wine.
Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru ‘Morgeot’ (Joseph Faiveley), Burgundy, France 2014 (100% Chardonnay) 13% ABV
With wine making from this vineyard going back seven generations, it has become one of the most famous vineyards in ChassagneMontrachet. Although you may think it a bit mad pairing this wine with this recipe, for me it really works. Stone fruit, butterscotch and honey are obvious, but the subtle banana and vanilla notes really come through. Trust me on this one. It works!

COOL DIGS
More and more of us are making a conscious effort to pencil in a bit of switch-off time. A bit of ‘me time’. A moment of quiet. In a non-stop world where our phones are never really switched to silent - and sometimes, in fact, neither are our minds - it’s important to take a step back and start again. Some people find their ‘zen’ in yoga, in meditation, in reading - or by getting lost in the countryside. This winter, we’re finding the ultimate zen escape by the coast on our doorstep in Saltburn. Saltburn-based photographer, Ben Benoliel, reached out to tell us of his exciting new project. Something oh-so simple, yet oh-so effective. Take a property a stone’s throw from the waves, add a little interior flair here and there, and open up as a place to rest, relax and recharge. Ben teamed up with wife Leanne and his best pal Neil Bedford, who he met at university 10 years ago, to come up with this unique and refreshing new concept. Not only is The Artists Pad an uber cool hideaway, perfect for Saltburn staycations all year round, it invites like-minded creatives to enjoy the serene space at their leisure. From holidaymakers to writers, poets, musicians and photographers, it’s a tranquil hideaway for people looking to spark that creative connection. In the demanding world we live in today, it’s the perfect solution. A place to switch off, settle into your own thoughts and give yourself some space to retreat - and maybe even discover something new about yourself. “Neil and I have been best friends for over 10 years,” says Ben. “We studied photography together at university in London. When we left, he went and did the freelance thing, and I went into e-commerce. “He has done really well; he’s pretty much photographed everyone. He’s Kasabian’s photographer, so he travels around with them a lot. Sergio is his ‘other best friend’, as I put it,” he laughs. “He tours the world with Kasabian and shoots for all sorts of different publications. He was based in London until last year. Every time he had the opportunity, he would escape London and come to Saltburn to stay with us. “He was spending a lot of time up here, but he didn’t have a place. This property came up for sale and he bought it. “But he wasn’t using the place at all. He was never there, so he was going to get
rid of it - at which point, I said ‘why don’t we make it into a holiday let?’ - and the rest is history. “But over time, and after we bounced ideas off each other, it’s turned into a museum of all sorts of interesting things. “It’s like a studio, but it’s not focused on productivity and work, it’s more focused on rest, relax and recharge. Because of the crazy world we’re all living in, Neil and I have both always had a very similar view on how stressful things can get. “That’s the thing that we’re most passionate about... being able to invite people to get away from the stresses of every day.” When it comes to artistic flair and imagination, your surroundings are so very important. A busy working environment can sometimes send you into a state of mind block; and the thought of sitting and staring at a big blank screen can be quite daunting. For me, leave me in a peaceful place with a pencil, a notebook and no internet connection, and I’m away. All of which, I am enjoying as I write this piece. Inside the pad, you’ll find a hive of creative exhibits. From local painters and intriguing pieces by conceptual artists, to star-studded quotes and design-led decor - everything tells a story, and that’s what’s so great about this funky new seaside spot. The interiors have been pulled together with works collated by the pair. Nods to Ben’s fashion editorial background, as well as artistic designs by Daft Apeth (Serge Pizzorno from Kasabian), picked up by Neil. “The interior is basically an amalgamation of things that we’ve collected over the years,” says Ben. “We’ve got some work from a local painter called Bob Mitchell, we’ve got another conceptual artist called Deb Covell. We’ve also got an artist, who is fairly infamous in the arts scene, called Richie Culver. “We’ve got works that haven’t been donated, but we’ve collected from notable artists and photographers. “Neil shot Ed Sheeran for a cover of Clash Magazine. They had a big piece of artwork glass for the shoot - afterwards Ed signed it with a Sharpie. That’s on display at the top of the stairs, which is quite interesting.” Together, Ben and Neil have the creative flair, the industry contacts and the added charm of the North Yorkshire coast, all backing them in what is set to be a brilliant, and truly unique, business venture here in the North East. If you’re a creative and would like to apply for a residency, or you like the sound of a ‘recharge the mind and body’ retreat to the Saltburn seaside, please contact Ben and Neil at The Artists Pad on: stay@theartistspad.co.uk. theartistspad.co.uk

ADVENTURE CALLS
Wild & wonderful
From Ayurvedic treatments and high tea on top of waterfalls, to breakfast with elephants in the National Park, Elysia Fryer explores all things wild and wonderful in Sri Lanka
An idyllic island encircled by the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea, Sri Lanka is exciting, exotic and extremely beautiful. Step off the plane and enter a world where spaghetti-style cables link up towns and villages, and monkeys, wild dogs and tropical birds make up the population in the most remote countryside locations. You can go here for the surf, for the food, for an escape or for endless exploring. It’s a vast country and some of the chaotic, winding roads make for slightly challenging travel arrangements - but that’s all part of the fun, right? We’ve had our eyes on the beautiful, cross-country rail routes of Sri Lanka for some time, but this trip is all about hitting the roads - cruising through the quaint villages to get from one unique destination to the other. Wild & Co. are the brains behind our Sri Lankan super break. And as the name suggests, it’s all about getting to grips with the wild side. Their ethos is based on heritage, wildlife and wellness - and the three properties in our itinerary each reflect those values. The first stop on our Sri Lankan escapade is Rukgala Retreat - ‘The Shelter on a Rock’. Sitting in a serene spot on the shores of the Victoria Lake near Kandy - a quaint and colourful city set on a plateau surrounded by beautiful mountains - Rukgala is a place that puts you first. A yoga retreat, a wellness break, and an escape from routine. Guests can go here for some of the best yoga you’ll find on the island, the most spectacular rolling countryside, the finest

traditional Sri Lankan cooking mixed with contemporary veggie and vegan ideas, and general feel-good living. The scenery doesn’t get much better than this. The house sits on a hill in a pretty undisturbed part of the country. Natural beauty is at the heart of everything at Rukgala. It’s an escape in the hills and you’re sure to get that feel-good glow after spending some time here. Whether you’re a thrill-seeker or a down-timer, there’s plenty to keep you going. Relax on the terrace and get lost in a novel, paddleboard your way around the Victoria Lake, or stretch it out with the lovely Emma in the outdoor yoga studio, hidden within the trees by the pool. Rukgala was born out of an idea to transform an old house into the ultimate sanctuary in the mountains. It offers eight guest bedrooms with perfectly peaceful views out over the trees and lake. It’s definitely an escape from the everyday - and a must for anyone looking for good-for-the-soul downtime in a good-forthe-soul environment. Feeling fully refreshed after our healthy yoga retreat at Rukgala, we’re heading up and over the mountains towards the glorious Gal Oya National Park. In the arms of nature, Gal Oya Lodge opens up the wonders of the untouched national park to the east of the island. Cast away in the jungle, hidden beneath Monkey Mountain, you’ll find this Africaninspired retreat - worlds away from anything we have ever experienced before. It’s a place to immerse oneself in the solace of nature. A digital detox with absolutely no compromise on luxury living and home

comforts. Yes, you might find yourself on creature watch as you’re guided from the main lodge to your jungle abode, but the on-site wildlife experts are on hand at all times to ensure your stay is a relaxing and enjoyable one - albeit educational and intriguing (they’re the first to share animal or reptile sightings with you, if you wish). An overgrown track brings you to Gal Oya’s unassuming entrance, a wooden sculpture, where you’re greeted by smiling faces. A lantern-lit pathway leads you to the lodge - boasting the most breathtaking backdrop we’ve seen. A peaceful swimming pool sitting at the foot of a spectacular mountain; we’re certain this spot has been taken straight out of a film set. On this occasion, we’re lucky enough to be sharing our eco lodge with no other humans, but plenty of other creatures. There are eyes on you at all times - whether it’s the very attentive staff, Whisky and Arrack the resident pooches on constant guard, or the many animals living in their natural habitats amongst us. Surrounded by lush greenery, rice fields and a handful of humble abodes (some housing the last remaining communities of the Veddha people – the forest-dwelling, indigenous people of Sri Lanka), you really are at one with nature here. And there’s no place quite like it. Our jungle hideaway under the trees is tranquil and tastefully designed, with eco-friendly materials aplenty. Dark wooden decor, a thatched roof, four-poster bed and your very own safari-style terrace out front. You don’t have to go far to get to grips with the Sri Lankan wildlife. You’re living with it. A personal favourite is our alfresco bathroom. Luxurious, no-nasties toiletries, a bamboo shoot sink we’re dreaming of adding to our not-so-eco bathroom back home, and the sun beating down on you as you freshen up for the day ahead. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t do a full bathroom scan before entering - especially during the

night - but that’s all part of the wilderness fun. And by day two, we’re well and truly at home here. What creatures? There are all kinds of on-site and off-site activities available from the lodge, and the team are more than happy to guide you on your way - or even join you for the day on your wildlife adventures. Home to the Jim Edwards Wildlife Research Centre, the guys are constantly collecting new information for the Sri Lankan Wildlife Trust. Our personal guide, teacher, friend and inspiring companion, Achintha, is an absolute joy to listen to. He tells us of his education, his childhood in buzzy Colombo, and the research being carried out from the on-site wildlife centre. There are sightings of elephants aplenty here - as well as crocodiles, reptiles, deer and some of the most interesting birds of prey. Leopards are rare, but can be found in the Gal Oya National Park. Achintha shows us footage of recent sightings in the mountains. A local wildlife walk to the nearby lake is an absolute must - led by the lodge’s experts, and most importantly, our canine guide - Arrack. Those looking for a truly unique wildlife experience must organise the boat safari trip in the Gal Oya National Park. Early risers depart from the lodge in a safari jeep, stopping off as nature awakes along the way. A 30-minute journey brings us to the lake the biggest in Sri Lanka. Hop on board a safari boat on the lake’s edge and you’re taken on a journey of discovery. Crocs dock up on the banks, eyes peering out at us as we pass by; elephants bathe between islands; and rare birds glide through the treetops. A real highlight is our picnic breakfast on a rock, as we watch elephants bathe within a stone’s throw. Fresh fruit, yoghurt, sandwiches and tea - all provided by our chums at Gal Oya Lodge - enjoyed in the most spectacular setting.
Definitely living on the wild side. The third leg of our journey takes us back towards Kandy and into the foothills of the Knuckles Mountains, for a traditional Sri Lankan ‘teatox’ at Ashburnham Estate - an authentic escape in the heart of Sri Lanka’s ‘Cultural Triangle’. Helter-skelter-style roads will bring you to this quintessential estate oozing with British charm. Set within a working tea plantation, beautiful waterfalls and hazy, far-reaching views across the mountains, you’re in the perfect place to get lost in a book and sip copious amounts of tea. It’s a little cooler in the hills, so we’re found dining on the terrace in blankets, sipping G&T by the crackling fire in the lounge, and chasing waterfalls after sunrise. Life is simple here. A Sri Lankan hopper breakfast (a full English wrapped neatly in a crisp, egg nest) sets us
Dinner is served out on the terrace. A mix of traditional Sri Lankan dishes and British favourites. The Sri Lankan curries seal the deal for us. Oh-so vibrant and full of flavour. Our hosts, Vish and Nadan, know the estate like the back of their hands, and they’ll look after you with big grins from start to finish - arranging picnics, off-the-grid adventures, cooking classes and as much tea as you can consume! Our final day trip takes us on a tea tour with estate manager, Mr Das - learning everything there is to know about the island’s best-loved crop. Here you’ll hear all about the crop-to-cup journey the delicious hot tipples you’ve been sipping on the estate have been on. We meet with the local tea pickers, have a go ourselves and enjoy a proper tea-tasting experience in the ‘Tea Hut’.
Dark wooden decor, a thatched roof, four-poster bed and your very own safari-style terrace out front. You don’t have to go far to get to grips with the Sri Lankan wildlife. You’re living with it up nicely for a morning exploring the cascades, plunge pools and waterfalls all within easy reach of the house. You have these natural beauties to yourself when staying at Ash, and we just can’t get enough of them. A dip in the plunge pool, followed by a cascade picnic and a wander to the waterfall. Perfect. Finish with a hike back up to the top, through the glorious green tea fields, where afternoon tea is served on a hilltop. You may even spot some monkeys swinging in the trees along the way.
From yogi detox and wildlife beneath the rocks, to a traditional Sri Lankan ‘teatox’, Wild & Co.’s property portfolio is sure to send you on your way to a wild and wonderful stay in the most spectacular country. Sri Lanka is a place best-loved for its crashing waves, rolling beaches, sweeping palm trees and oodles of elephants; but step off the beaten track a little and you’ll find some of the finest culture and countryside in South Asia. wild-and-co.com

Winter retreat Blessed with dreamy decor, fabulous furnishings and gorgeous gardens that continue to wow even in the winter, Grey Hens cottage is a picture-perfect hideaway. Escape there over the holiday season…
An art educator for nearly 40 years, Marie Stansby decided to take a leap of faith and embark on a new and exciting venture - converting a tired barn into a luxury holiday home for two. And the result is quite something. Nestled in the Coquet Valley, between Rothbury and Felton, and packed with modern, Pinterest-worthy features, the one-bed home is an interior-lover’s dream. Take a tour and discover crisp white walls, glorious high-beamed ceilings, tons of natural light and modern furniture, fixtures and appliances, including large smart TVs with Netflix. You’ll also find a fully-equipped kitchen, one large family bathroom, a utility room, bike storage and an impressive studio and workshop-style space, inspired by Marie’s

love of art, where guests can kick-back and create. Explore a little more and you’ll see Marie’s own work, along with prints and paintings by local artists in Northumberland, on the walls of both the studio and the remainder of the property. The journey from barn to wow-house began on paper in the summer of 2017 and the vision started to become real when the builders arrived on site in October 2018. There were several ‘hiccups’ along the way; roof collapsing at one end, rotten beams and the push to make the building water tight before the worst of the winter weather, but eventually the vision has become a reality. “Grey Hens offers far more than just a place to stay,” says Marie. “It encompasses all the things I love; a welcoming home, artwork and an acre of garden, which has been 20 years in the making.”
“I love the way the property brings the garden and surrounding countryside into the cottage. The glass wall allows every element of nature to envelop you.” The garden is at the heart of the home and divided into rooms, dictated by coloured herbaceous planting. Each of them have a unique feature, too, such as a fire pit, or a pond. There’s also a walled vegetable garden, filled with cutting flowers - all of which Marie grows for weddings, special occasions, a florist in Newcastle and a deli in nearby Rothbury. It’s also bordered by soft fruit, which Marie uses to make jams, preserves, liqueurs and gin - some of which guests will find in their Northumbrian-inspired welcome hamper. What’s in a name? During the early part of the 19th century, smuggling was carried out in Upper Coquetdale. Scotch whisky was conveyed on horseback in kegs, called ‘grey hens’, over the Cheviot hills and gin was brought from Boulmer on the coast. According to local histories in the area, the farmer at Bushygap Farm kept three swift horses for this purpose. The farmhouse was described as having a double gable and in the space between the walls gin and whisky was concealed in these ‘grey hens’. Eventually, the secret chamber, containing a large quantity of gin, was discovered and the smuggler-farmer brought to justice and heavily fined!

a snooze by the fire back home in Great Ayton. DOGGY DOWNTIME >> When I’m not at work with mum, I love being in the garden and chasing tennis balls, as well as being on cat patrol. HOUND HABBITS >> If you need me, you’ll find me curled up on my human’s bean bag, it’s my favourite place to nap. PUPPY PAMPER >> I’m not a fan of being bathed, brushed or having my hair cut. I definitely prefer the au naturel look. I’m a country girl!
DOG’S BEST FRIEND >> I’m such a mummy’s girl and like to follow her everywhere she goes. I also really love 13-year-old Border Terrier, Tally, at grandma’s house. We like to chase the ball together - I always win but sometimes let her have it. ADVERTORIAL
RUSTIC RETREAT Formed from an eclectic mix of aged wood and leather, this lived-in look is embellished with wild accessories for natural charm. Furniture should be charismatic, full of character and richly coloured – reclaimed timber and dark mahogany tick all of the boxes here. To break down the borders of masculinity, look to faded fabrics, cosy layers and relaxed designs such as deep, slouchy sofas. Animal motifs are welcome on cushions, lamps and wall art, while brass lighting and vases will bring some much needed warmth. You can even pair velvet chairs with a distressed dining table for unexpected contrast and comfort.
FOUR INTERIOR TRENDS TO TRY THIS WINTER For most of us, the best part about the colder months is getting cosy indoors – whether that’s entertaining guests late into the evening or enjoying lazy weekends lounging on the sofa. That’s why, at this time of year, it’s more important than ever for your home to feel truly inviting, special, and, of course, stylish. Sounds like the perfect excuse for a makeover. Drawing inspiration from the latest trends, these four fabulous looks from Barker and
Stonehouse will give you just the encouragement you need to create a living space you’ll love coming home to. Whatever space you’re working with, discover everything you need to update your home at Barker and Stonehouse. From a stunning range of furniture to those all-important accessories and rugs, you’ll find pieces to fall in love with over and over again. For more inspiration visit barkerandstonehouse.co.uk.
RETRO REVIVAL They say history repeats itself and it’s safe to say that retro is back with a bang. To begin, channel that vintage vibe with a statement design or two. A button-back bed frame in plush velvet will bring essential extravagance to your space, while sleek silhouettes provide the perfect mid-century contrast. Introduce metallic finishes throughout and finish with fringing to add fun and flair. For a high-energy, high-impact look, opt for pops of playful red, opulent blue and mustard yellow. Bold accessories will bring this look together beautifully – think oversized vases, feature mirrors and luxe lighting.
URBAN NORDIC
GLACIAL GLAMOUR An elegant interior is evergreen. This season, add a modern edge with sumptuous textures and polished metallics. For a touch of luxe, load up on shimmering velvets in the form of cushions, lampshades and furniture. Soft and sophisticated, this versatile textile feels just as good as it looks, adding undeniable glamour to any area of the home. Reflective surfaces are the star of the show, so keep your colour palette effortless with icy greys, silvers and blues. For a clean and contemporary effect, pair a marble table top with chrome accessories and mirrored finishes.
72 luxe-magazine.co.uk
Scandinavian design has been given a relaxed makeover this season. Set the scene with cool ceramics, leafy greenery and a natural colour palette of earthy tones. Exuding rugged charm that only gets better with age, worn leather upholstery is a key component of stylishly-laidback living. Opt for sofas and chairs with metal feet for a modern, minimalist touch that taps into this trend well. Pared-back pieces and raw finishes give a nod to Nordic heritage, so combine rustic wood furniture with angular shapes and accents of metal for an industrial twist on Scandi style. Add in some greenery and you’re good to go.

AT THE WHEEL
with Bob Arora
A run around the block in the new BMW Z4
Sports star Having previously owned a few of the original Z3s, I was really excited to be able to get behind the wheel of the latest Z4. It was launched 22 years ago, and this latest incarnation is the best looking in my eyes. Any Bond fans with a good memory will remember the Z3 in Golden Eye – driven along with a 7 Series instead of his usual Aston Martin. The Z3 was never quite as good as the Porsche Boxster to drive, but it was cheaper and a great looking car at the time. BMW have decided to bring back the fabric roof instead of the heavier metal roof. This is a much lighter option and takes up less space. The designers have taken quite a few styling cues from the 8-Series - and believe me, this is no bad thing. The Z4 and the Toyota Supra both share the same platform, but I’m sure they’ll be like chalk and cheese to drive. I was lucky enough to drive the Z4 with the M Sport body kit - the front and rear spoiler, along with the larger alloy wheels, give this car a real sense of drama and a really aggressive look. The car has been launched with three engine choices: a 20i engine offering 197hp and the 30i engine giving drivers 258hp. Petrol heads can upgrade to the
74
luxe-magazine.co.uk
M TwinPower Turbo 6-cylinder petrol engine, offering 340hp. The base model has a top speed of 149mph and the two other engines have their top speed limited at 155mph. The range topping model has an amazing sounding engine, its exhaust pops and crackles in sport mode. The suspension has been totally redesigned, with the rear featuring double wishbones for the first time. Aluminium components have also been used to save weight. As you’d expect, the build quality is excellent - the materials used are absolutely top notch. I loved the chunky steering wheel, the buttons on the wheel control, the cruise control and the volume settings. The materials, stitching and metal trim all look and feel great. The sat nav system is very easy to use, and if any other BMWs have been caught up in traffic, or involved in an accident that is causing delays, it informs accordingly. The optional technology pack adds reverse cameras and self-parking, which is excellent, especially in tight spaces. You can also get heads-up display, which is the first time it has been available in the Z4. The Harmon Kardon speakers are absolutely brilliant and the digital dash is great. The buttons for the heating are all underneath the infotainment screen, and I thought it was nice to see buttons, rather than controlling everything via the screen.
A child seat can be fitted to the passenger seat, but there isn’t much boot space. A golf bag fits in with ease, as does a small suitcase and overnight bag. I suppose it’s adequate, considering it’s only a two-seater. The wind-deflector is a bit flimsy and it’s very hard to see out of your rear-view mirror in the dark. I ended up using the side mirrors much more. It stops the wind buffering when you put the roof down, and the roof can be opened while on the move as long as it is done under 31mph. The roof can also be opened via a digit key on your phone. This feature is only available for android phone users bizarrely, BMW haven’t installed Android Auto. Apple phone users don’t have this
option at the moment, which is a shame as it’s great. All cars get parking sensors as standard, dual zone climate control, leather upholstery and a wide screen infotainment screen. An 8-Speed automatic gearbox is standard across the range. I liked the optional bling crystal gear-lever, but it does come at a cost. It was great to drive the new Z4, it certainly didn’t disappoint in the way it drove. I think the new styling has given the car a much more aggressive look. If it’s ever called up for a Bond film again, it’ll definitely look the part - this time round. Car courtesy of Cooper BMW, Durham

Electric avenue Bob hits the road in the Jaguar I Pace
For anyone who thought electric cars were going to be a fad, I can definitely confirm that electric power is firmly here to stay. Whenever anyone mentioned an electric car to me, I immediately thought of a milk float, however, the real game changer for me was when I drove the Tesla S. Not only was the car amazing to drive, but it had the ability to be driven a decent distance on the battery power alone. Electric cars have amazing performance, but their achilles heel was always range. Prior to driving the Tesla, I was always a fan of hybrids as you literally have the best of both worlds. With battery technology moving along rapidly, most of the big manufacturers are now launching electric vehicles, and this brings me on to Jaguar, who have just launched a new car. Jaguar have used what they’ve picked up from Formula E and put the technology into this new car. They’ve also started a Touring Car Championship using the I Pace, which is a world first for any electric car. The I Pace is Jaguar’s first electric car and they’ve done an amazing job - a winner on their hands in my eyes. The car is an SUV, which is a booming market, and it’s also electric, so that’s another tick in the box. The car looks very sporty and slightly boxier at the rear compared to the E Pace and the F Pace. The designers have gone to great lengths to make it aerodynamic, and with a drag co-efficiency of 0.29, it certainly is. As with most cars, it needs big alloy wheels, which helps make the car look even sportier, but that will affect the drag efficiency. The car has 50/50 handling, and really is brilliant to drive around town or at speed it loved being chucked into corners. It’s really stable and planted at speed. As with all electric cars, the performance is blistering, 0-60 times are supercar quick!
NOV/DEC19
The car gets to 60mph in 4.5 seconds and accelerates from 30-70 mph in 3.5 seconds. When you consider the car weight at just over two tons, it makes the vehicle’s performance even more astonishing. The car has 400bhp and four-wheel drive, so you have the best of both worlds. The car’s interior is sleek and stylish. The centre of the console is dominated by a widescreen infotainment dash, with another screen underneath, controlling the heating. The speedometer and dials are all digital, as you’d expect in an electric car. The strange thing though, is the rev counter changed for a power and charge dial, and the petrol gauge is obviously replaced with an electric range display. The dash and buttons are all of great quality. I was very happy to see the Jaguar grab handles on the side of the central console. There was plenty of room for water bottles and your personal bits and pieces. Both the driver and passengers have plenty of storage and room up front, the rear of the car is ideal for two people – albeit a little cramped for the middle passenger. The optional panoramic roof helps make the interior much lighter and airier. The key remembers your preferred seat position, radio station and heat settings etc., which is handy when sharing a car. I’d be tempted to opt for the air suspension as it transforms the car’s handling and it gives you that magic carpet ride that Jaguars are renowned for. At speed, the ride height is lowered when driving over 65mph, and it can be lowered if you want to go off-roading. If you charge the car via a 13-amp plug, it would take 24 hours to fully charge the car. Using a supercharger, you’ll have 80% charge in just 40 minutes. The car is supposed to have a range of nearly 300 miles, depending on weather and how you drive. The car I drove had 5,000 miles on the clock, it was fully charged for me and it had a range of 200 miles. The range really depends on how you drive
the car. When you’re at the wheel of an electric car, it changes the way you drive, as you want to try and get the most out of the batteries. Reading some of the Jaguar forums though, one driver managed to get an impressive 309 miles out of a full charge. If you only travel 30 miles a day, a full charge might actually last you a full week. Pre-heating or pre-cooling the car while it’s on charge doesn’t affect the vehicle’s range, so it makes sense to do it before you start your day. Driving the car, you seem to forget the sound of an engine, and you get used to hearing the whoosh and whine of the electric motors. The car has won a plethora of awards
and I’m not surprised. It won the 2019 World Car of the Year award. For Jaguar’s first attempt at an electric car, it’s absolutely excellent. It’s priced from £65K but I’m sure there will be loads of competitive lease deals out there. The all-important company car tax and benefits in-kind rules will also make this car an even more attractive purchase. Having had the car for a few days, I really think I could get used to driving an electric vehicle, and I have to say it’s been one of the best motors I’ve driven this year - and nothing like the milk float I first thought!
