contents 14>> Do This ISSUE 54 SEP/OCT18 Oh, the love of a new throw, the flicker of a fresh candle and the comfort of cosying up at home again. The bi-folds are closed for business and barbecue dormant for now. It’s nesting time as the nights draw in and life turns casserole-heavy once again. Autumn is definitely a favourite time of year for me. Low sunlight, crunchy leaves underfoot and my old friend the scarf back in its rightful place. Proper clothes, proper weather and the never-dull predictability of new episodes of The Crown. The air is fresh, the colours are golden and we can get to grips with bonfires and sociable suppers now that all our friends are back in one place. It’s definitely the best time to think about cosy homes so you’ll love getting immersed in our gorgeous new Interiors Essentials magazine within this edition. Inspiring houses, glamorous getaways and a festival to be excited by. Home-happy days.

LUXE LIFE
KATE DIXON
Kate Dixon works with Traidcraft Exchange, a North East based international development charity which uses the power of trade to create lasting solutions to poverty. LUXE PEOPLE >> Aside from my awesome husband and vast and brilliant extended family, I’m lucky enough to work with some amazing humans at Traidcraft Exchange – who combine doing wonderful and important things with being excellent to share an office with! LUXE PLACES >> for a weekend > Beadnell Beach, Northumberland. So much sand and sea and sky. Plus you can’t beat a bracing dunk in the North Sea. a long holiday > I’ve been really lucky and mostly had jobs where I’ve been able to travel a bit. I met my husband whilst we were both working in Sierra Leone, West Africa, and it’s one of my favourite places. We try to go back every year to see friends and old colleagues. People think of civil war and ebola, but the beaches and wildlife are amazing, and the country is beautiful and incredibly welcoming – it makes for a fantastic holiday. a treat > I’ve always wanted to go to St Kilda in the Outer Hebrides. LUXE RELAX >> Best food > Eat your hat cardamom chocolate (I can get through the whole bar in minutes). Best wine > Honestly? I wish I had a sophisticated grape based answer for this… but I’m not that fussed! Favourite restaurant > Harrissa Kitchen in Sandyford. The food is delicious, and their business model is super cool – they run as a social enterprise and invest their profits back into the community. Perfect weekend > A good book, a proper walk, and lots of people round for dinner. Downtime means > Finally getting to unpack some boxes! We just moved house and are still living in total chaos – at some point I’d like to find where my socks are... Best telly > Handmaids Tale – absolutely gripping. And Time Team. Can’t beat some digging for bones! Best book > The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver is my very favourite, but I’m currently reading a book on the Salem Witch Trials by historian Stacy Schiff, which is fascinating. Best sounds > Nick Drake, Fleetwood Mac, Willy Mason, and the Little Comets. I suspect my Spotify history might also show a lot more Taylor Swift than I’d care to admit to… LUXE SHOP >> Best shopping city > Corbridge isn’t even close to a city, but it’s got RE homewear, a cookshop, an independent bookshop and approximately 17,000 tea rooms – what more do you need? Favourite shop > It’s got to be traidcraftshop.co.uk. Every item is fairly traded, has an interesting story, and helps artisans in the developing world. And they stock my favourite Eat your hat cardamom chocolate… Luxe retail treat > Second hand furniture from Anderson and Garland auction house in Westerhope for my new house! Best buy > STUDY 34 Alpaca jumpers. Ethically made, super soft and ridiculously beautiful, I wear them more than anything else I own, and have them in grey and camel. Ellie O’Neill, who designs them, lives in Newcastle and has built a really brilliant brand. LUXE PARTY >> Perfect party > Anything with a ceilidh. Best dress > A fifties style one made by Madam Wokie in Freetown. It has pockets for useful things, which is a win by me. Dinner date > A summer evening at The Ship inn at Low Newton. It’s such a nice pub, but I always forget to book and end up sitting outside, so it would be pretty glamorous to eat dinner not wearing an anorak… YOUR LUXE THING IN LIFE >> Sounds ridiculous, but a library card – access to free books for everyone in the UK is a massively brilliant thing, and we are in such danger of taking it for granted. Everyone should have and use a library card!

ADVERTORIAL
Parental Responsibility As we move towards the close of this glorious summer we turn our thoughts towards darker nights, cosy nights in watching “Strictly” and for those of us who enjoy football, the much awaited new season starts! However, by far the biggest change for families at this time of year will be the start of the new academic year. Thousands of children across the UK shall be starting new schools this September. Be it the start of nursery, primary, secondary, 6th form, first or high school, this time of year marks a time of change and opportunity. The choice of school for our children is a significant one. As American founding father, Benjamin Franklin, once said, “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest”. But who decides where a child goes to school? Their parents of course! However, the answer isn’t always entirely straightforward. All those with Parental Responsibility for a child must consent to the choice of school. Mothers automatically have Parental Responsibility for a child but it isn’t automatic for the biological father. There are a variety of ways a father can obtain Parental Responsibility; the most common is being married to the mother or being named as the father on the birth certificate (but only if the child was born on or after 01 December 2003). A step parent can obtain Parental Responsibility but only if all those with Parental Responsibility consent and sign an agreement, or if the Court grants a Parental Responsibility Order in the step parent’s favour. A wider family member, such as a grandparent, could also have Parental Responsibility if the Court has granted an order that the child lives with them. There are also further provisions regulating surrogacy
arrangements, whereby the Court can now grant a Parental Order to a non-biological parent. For the majority of families, however, there will only be two people with Parental Responsibility – the biological mother and father. They need to agree the school their child goes to. However, what happens if there is no agreement? The numbers of separated parents has held steady over the past decade. The single parents charity, Gingerbread, estimate there are around 2 million single parents who make up nearly a quarter of families with dependent children (as at June 2018). Separated parents may differ in their views as to which school to send their child, or the resident parent may want to move to a different area and change their child’s school. If those with Parental Responsibility cannot agree which school to enrol the child then an application will need to be brought to the Family Court. This can either be done by the resident parent applying for a Specific Issue Order for permission to change schools, or the non-resident parent applying for a Prohibited Steps Order prohibiting the resident parent from taking any further steps to change the child’s school pending the Court making a final decision. The Judge will base their decision solely on what is in the best interests of the child. Another common area of dispute between separated parents is a change of surname for the child. The same legal principles apply – all those with Parental Responsibility must agree to the change and in the absence of agreement an application must be brought to the Family Court. So if you’re considering changing your child’s school or name as this academic year approaches, I do recommend

ANNE DIAMOND: NELD >> The baby care charity Neoangels will be one of the beneficiaries from the North East Ladies Day at Hardwick Hall on 26 September this year where health campaigner Anne Diamond is guest speaker. We caught up with trustees Emma Hedley and Jodie Jenkins to find out more about Neoangels: Jodie works on neonatal ward 23 at North Tees Hospital which cares for babies born early – from as early as 23 weeks. “These are very vulnerable babies and can be very poorly. It is obviously a really stressful time for parents. The charity Neoangels was set up to provide as much care and help as families need while they are with us – babies can be on the ward for weeks – some up to 150 days.” Emma: “We provide equipment to make the ward as up-to-date as it can be in terms of equipment – such as two new incubators which have cost £30,000. This is reassuring for families and appreciated by staff.” But it is also important extras that make the difference to parents says Jodie. “There’s a financial pressure on families whose babies are with us long-term – from parking fees to food. The staff on the ward work with the Neoangels team to make sure that parents have things to make their stay easier – ‘one offs’, even food parcels, but also we can get them parking and canteen vouchers.” The charity has helped provide breast pumps for mums to be able to express milk for their babies as well as comfy feeding chairs and cuddle wraps which help keep baby secure and encourage vital skin-on-skin contact with a parent when they are out of an incubator. Money donated by the NELD event this year will go towards breast-feeding support programmes on the neonatal ward. Neoangels receives support from families whose babies have been treated on the ward and who want to say thankyou to the team. The charity also supports an Angel Fund set up to look after families who face the devastating loss of a baby on the unit. This money purchases bereavement care items to support families during end of life care. www.neoangels.co.uk Tickets are still available for the NELD lunch with TV presenter and campaigner, Anne Diamond. SPARKLE TO SAVE >> Young Newcastle woman Laura Currer had launched a foundation to help victims of trauma return to everyday life, enjoy new things and get their sparkle back. The motivation for the foundation comes from Laura’s own experiences, after she was raped in 2015. Although she had many interactions with police, legal professionals, health professionals and counsellors, Laura believes that these support networks were just a small part of her overall recovery, and the things that had the most profound effect on Laura’s recovery process were the simple things, when she was alone – driving, working, crafting or lifting weights. She aims to channel her own experiences of trauma and recovery through The Laura Currer Sparkle Foundation, launched in August on the third anniversary of her attack. The membership organisation offers a support network, meet ups and a specialist app featuring curated playlists, work out routines and mindfulness tips. “My experience was of sexual violence, others will have very different experiences. We don’t need to know what brings you to us, but we want you to know that we see you.” www.lauracurrersparklefoundation.com

ADVERTORIAL
Getting your house in order I am a corporate law specialist and a partner at Tilly Bailey & Irvine Law Firm, advising on various business issues. The common perception of the legal profession is usually one of two stereotypes; the first is that of stuffy old men in offices surrounded by leather-bound books and being referred to as ‘Mr Malarkey’, the other is of courtrooms, judges, and settlements on the steps of court. At Tilly Bailey & Irvine Law Firm we cut through stereotypes. We have established a knowledgeable, vibrant and youthful team that provides first-rate advice to our clients in all aspects of both their business and personal lives; and hopefully, when working with us, that first stereotype is a long forgotten one. Whilst settlements will often need to be made, and matters will still need to go to court, it is the goal of our business services teams to provide early advice, support and guidance to our clients, which minimises the need for protracted litigation. Whilst our excellent dispute resolution team is always on hand for such matters, we know that these issues are a distraction from the running of businesses. Everyone reading this who operates a business will have employers’ liability insurance and public indemnity insurance, but do you actually have ‘insurance’ in place for the real core elements of your business? That is where Tilly Bailey & Irvine Law Firm comes in. By working with our clients and understanding the risks and opportunities within their business, we can determine
which are critical; and provide pragmatic legal advice and support ‘insuring’ your business and ensuring its continued success. For example, in my area of expertise, conducting early stage “due diligence” allows us to identify potential issues for our clients. Issues that may either (1) present problems during the normal day-to-day operation and even sometimes lead to litigation; or (2) pose a significant risk to the likelihood of investment, funding or disposal of the business - risks including a reduction on its value, personal indemnities from individuals or a threat to the entire sale itself. Through partnership with our clients, we are able to not only minimise and mitigate these risks of last minute issues coming out of the woodwork, but also increase the value of a business or company. As part of our commitment to this, we are launching a series of articles aimed at giving a little bit of insight into this process to business owners and will be following these up with one-to-one exploratory sessions with those business owners who are interested in getting their house in order. These articles will be published through our website www.tbilaw.co.uk and social media platforms. If, however, you would like to speak to me, or one of my colleagues to find out more about the business services we offer, please contact me directly at cmalarkey@tbilaw.co.uk or via our Commercial Law office at Wynyard Business Park on 01740 646000.

THE FUN STUFF
I N TO T H E W O O D S
Rockliffe Hall has launched a wonderful whimsical woodland to charm the little people. Elysia Agnew enjoys a playdate
Inspired by Alice in Wonderland’s storybook adventures, Rockliffe Hall has transformed its own woodland into an enchanting hideout that will spark the imagination. A curious journey through the estate grounds will bring you to this adventure playground where time stands still and the good times roll. Mischmasch is ‘a wonderland of curiosities’, taking one and a half acres of woodland and creating an enchanting space with six arctic pods nestled beneath the trees, an eco adventure playground and an interactive water feature. This new escape for mini Rockliffe guests is inspired by the adventures of novelist Lewis Carroll, who spent most of his childhood in the village of Croft, close to the Rockliffe estate, where his father worked as the rector. German for ‘a disorderly mixture of things’, the name Mischmasch comes from a family magazine written and illustrated by Lewis Carroll in the mid-1800s. His intriguing world of quirks and curiosities found in Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass is mirrored in the estate’s new development. Mischmasch ticks all the boxes when it comes to a family getaway or fun for the kids, offering all kinds of activities for
younger visitors. Search for the specially-commissioned sculptures and go on an Alice in Wonderland trail from the hotel to the gardens, check in for downtime in the arctic pods or let off some steam in the adventure playground. Party pods bring a fresh new concept to Rockliffe. Whether it’s little ones exploring the soft play, teens gaming in the sports pod, or a bit of chill out time in the cinema room, there’s something for everyone in this curiously captivating new space. Grown ups can unwind in the topsy-turvy Rosebud pod, where you’ll find flamingo lamps, patchwork chairs and funky furniture. The Mischmasch menu includes pizzas, burgers, hot dogs, drinks and afternoon tea packages. “Mischmasch will offer children and parents a unique interactive experience whilst improving the facilities for all our

guests whether enjoying a game of tennis, indoor activities in the pods, and events in the magnificent glasshouse,” says Chairman, Warwick Brindle. “We wanted to enhance what’s available to our younger ones while also opening up opportunities to hold functions and events in a new setting.” The magical woodland gets ‘curiouser and curiouser’ as it breaks out into a big open space with climbing frames, tennis courts, and an interactive water feature. Venture further into the gardens and you’ll find a wildflower nature trail meandering around the outskirts of the development and beyond. A pictureperfect place for visitors to stroll, play and enjoy at their leisure. Trails will guide visitors through the trees and along the Tees. Stroll along the riverside to Croft, take the leisurely
railway loop, pop on your wellies and hike to Hurworth village, or get lost in a woodland stroll through the estate. Also new to the development is the Glasshouse. A real gem when it comes to new places to enjoy and explore. A grand, Victorian-style greenhouse overlooking the beautiful walled gardens, it’s a bright, breezy addition to the hotel’s events and entertainment space. The Glasshouse will be holding pop-up events, children’s tea parties and is an additional location for glorious garden weddings. “Rockliffe Hall is set in the most beautiful grounds and we want to take advantage of this by offering our guests more of an outdoor experience, alongside fishing in the Tees, handling birds of prey, or outdoor concerts,” says Warwick.

and pitta bread addiction... Best wine > I don’t drink wine very often. I drink gin, but prosecco is always a solid choice, with a dash of Chambord. Favourite restaurant > Nando’s... haha! There’s also a gorgeous pub where I’m from called the Three Horse Shoes, which is so homely and the food is always perfect. Perfect weekend > At the moment it’s sleeping to be honest. Cover rehearsals have been intense for the show so I think I’ll take some time catching up! Downtime means > I’m secretly a massive geek, so downtime most likely means time to play video games. Best telly > I’m currently firmly at the front of the Love Island train, but other than that, RuPaul’s Drag Race. I’ve seen every single episode, so I can tell you what happened, who won and who lip-synced and to what song.
Best book > Shameful to say but I don’t read a lot. I do read biographies sometimes and at the minute it’s Sarah Millican’s “How To Be Champion”. Best sounds > The rain on my window at night. LUXE SHOP >> Best shopping city > I haven’t been anywhere extravagant like NYC, so London. Favourite shop > ROKIT in Covent Garden and LUSH. Also - charity shops! You never know what you might find. Luxe retail treat > ... something from LUSH (I’m obsessed with the body lotions) or a fresh pair of jeans. Best buy > My Dr Martens backpack. It’s huge so I can fit my life in it and if I had a quid for every time I got a compliment on it, it would’ve paid for itself by now.
LUXE PARTY >> A memorable night out > a few years ago alongside my best friend Gail, I hosted and sang at a fundraiser night in memorial of my brother, and we managed to raise over £2,000. Perfect party > Something cosy with a costume theme, lots of gin, lots of snacks and lots of laughter. Dinner date > I like fancy places but to be honest, I’d prefer a night in with a takeaway or even being cooked for - that’s kind of nice. YOUR LUXE THING IN LIFE >> Self-love. I suffer with anxiety as a lot of us actors do, and I’ve recently made a conscious decision to focus and never compare myself to anyone else. I’ve wasted far too much time worrying and I’m done with it!

THE HIGH LIFE
Dome to dine for Alongside Tynemouth’s two devastatingly-beautiful beaches, Spanish City is, and always will be, the place of my childhood. Back then, it was a big, white, domeshaped land of fairground rides, sticky carpets, arcade thrills and soft-play fun. I can’t tell you how many hours of my life as youngster were spent hurtling myself into its ball pools. I remember all the cake and jelly-fuelled birthday parties I had there, the countless plates of smiley faces I consumed, and the sheer joy of finally conquering my fear of the ‘big slide’. It was pure, by-the-sea paradise for kids. So you can imagine my delight when plans to revive it were revealed. The process was a long one - years and years in fact but in July of this year, almost 20 years after shutting up shop, the iconic coastal landmark finally reopened its doors, ready to welcome a whole new generation - and the child in me couldn’t be more chuffed. Spearheaded by North East hospitality group, Kymel, the £10 million makeover has seen the venue transform from children’s playground to a premier wine-and-dine destination. A unique, upmarket place for feasting, sipping and celebrating life’s big moments. “We wanted to give Spanish City a second chance at life - a chance to start a new chapter,” says CEO, Kyle Macking.
There aren’t many places out there that are home to so much history, so close to the beauty of the coast

Whitley Bay’s beloved Spanish City has been restored to its former glory. Jessica Laing guides you through the revamp… “Our vision was to create a place for those who once loved it - those with fond memories of how it used to be - and a new, younger generation who have never seen it open.” “We really tried to consider what each and every customer would like to see, making sure that the venue’s offering was as varied as possible. We wanted Spanish City to appeal to everyone.” Looks-wise, it’s a thoughtful mix of old and new. Original features, such as the famous ‘dancing ladies’, which have graced the top of the Grade II listed building for over a century, have been lovingly repaired and restored, while new features include extensions to both sides of the building and full-height, seaward-facing windows, providing jaw-dropping views towards St Mary’s Island. The famous dome has also been perfectly preserved and given a fresh lick of paint, though head indoors and you’ll see that the ceiling of the central space has been removed from the ground floor, allowing visitors to see it from inside, in all its glory, for the first time in over 100 years. “It was massively important to us that we found a balance between preserving Spanish City’s original features and adding new, modern extensions,” says Kyle. “The building is a treasured piece of history that the locals hold dear to their hearts, so, for us, it was more about restoring than removing wherever possible. And I think we achieved that goal.” “People who were visiting the original Spanish City, back in the 1950s, have told us that it’s like stepping back in time to their youth when they visit now. To get that kind of feedback is amazing.” At the heart of the building’s brand new look is a

WHERE TO GO… FOR FRESH, FROM-THE-SEA FINDS… Following almost 40 years of success in the heart of Whitby, Trenchers Takeaway & Restaurant bring their fish-frying skills to the coast, ready to spoil Spanish City visitors with their bubbly battered delights. polished gang of restaurants - serving up everything from fish and chips and champagne and nibbles, to ice cream sundaes, surf and turf and afternoon tea. “We took inspiration from the exceptional food and drink destinations we manage as a hospitality group,” says Kyle. “For example, Spanish City’s new fish and chip restaurant and takeaway was created with Trenchers of Whitby in mind - a venue that’s been open for almost 40 years and famous for its award-winning fish and chips. “Meanwhile, over in Spanish City’s new fine-dining restaurant, guests will discover stunning seafood, very similar to the kind served at Crab & Lobster in Thirsk. “Our aim was to bring the same quality food and great customer service to Whitley Bay.” The addition of a new, flexible function space - St Mary’s Lighthouse Suite - means Spanish City is also a new place
to say ‘I do’ and celebrate special occasions. The private-hire space is blessed with serene out-to-sea views - perfect for wow-weddings or a big birthday bash. “Spanish City is such a unique and inspiring venue for special occasions and events - especially weddings. There aren’t many places out there that are home to so much history, so close to the beauty of the coast,” says Kyle. As we head into autumn/winter, there’s plenty to look forward to at Spanish City, including the promise of seasonal markets, intimate cinema screenings, exclusive party nights, fun festivals and exhibitions. “We’ve already kicked off our series of exciting events with live music every week at the new champagne bar and fish and chip restaurant, but there’s plenty more to come,” says Kyle. www.spanishcity.co.uk

There’s even a gents’ version, promising pork and black pudding pie, mature cheese scones and sticky toffee pudding macaroons. FOR FINE-DINING FUN… For special occasions, it has to be 1910 Steak & Seafood - Spanish City’s most opulent dining space - in tribute to the year in which the venue first opened. She has a passion for hat-making which she followed after striking out of her corporate career world where she was in her words, a ‘frustrated creative’. She runs the Amanda Field Studio in Helmsley where she creates beautiful bespoke hats and headpieces to suit everyone and every occasion. She is charming, elegant and fun and particularly good with the people who are ‘forced’ into the unfamiliar world of hats – you know, the reluctant mother of the bride or groom who tell her with a grimace that they’ve ‘got’ to wear a hat. “Yes, people come to me worried that
30 www.luxe-magazine.co.uk
they’ve ‘got’ to get a hat and don’t want to or are worried about it”, she says. “It is about finding them the hat that works so they feel comfortable, then the confidence will follow and they will have a ‘presence’ at their event.” Let’s face it, the hat isn’t a regular in the wardrobe for most people so it can be daunting to be thrust into the world of the big-brimmed hat or full-on fascinator. “People want to hide their faces but if a hat is made for them it will suit them and frame their face – and they won’t feel shy”, says Amanda. As a way of bringing the world of millinery to life Amanda has launched some introductory courses based at the lovely Wedding House at the Talbot Hotel in Malton, North Yorkshire. She can cater for every level of interest and experience but is particularly excited about the ‘Glamorous Girls Get-Ready’ days which include a hat-making experience, afternoon tea and fizz! These are aimed at groups heading for a day at the races or would be perfect as a hen party where the bride or groom’s mum could walk away with their bespoke headwear for the big day. We joined Amanda on one of the millinery events and she explained her own creative background.
Amanda trained with Rose Cory, who was the Queen Mother’s milliner, holding a Royal Warrant. “Couture millinery is about making everything from scratch”, says Amanda. “Sewing everything by hand on to the base and making every aspect of the hat – such as flowers”. It also means everything she creates is individual in terms of shape, colour and features – from feathers to flowers to bows and shiny buttons. You’re expected to arrive a novice but Amanda is a great guide and teacher. You sit round a table that is the stuff of dreams if you want your creativity spark ignited. Baskets of buttons, rolls of ribbons, platters of petals and fronds of feathers fill the space, ready to inspire. Colours and textures are lavish and lovely. Around the room are examples of Amanda’s finished pieces to inspire you and though at first it all seems overwhelming, Amanda soon sets the scene, guides you to a comfort zone and pops a neat oval of something called ‘pinokpok’ in your hand. You might have heard of sinamay as a hat-making material? The delightfulsounding pinokpok is a version of the woven material – made from plant fibres
to create a linen weave. It is steamed and stretched to create the starting point for the headpiece – and this is the base of our creation. Just what we do with it is left to our imagination! The base is navy blue and I decide to go with a theme of navy and silver. Before I know it, I’m gathering curvy silver-tinged fabric petals and sewing them together around a flower stem which I’ve also just made by rolling some fabric on the bias. By now I am convinced I am channelling the skills of a great aunt, who though I never met, was known to be a milliner of some repute. A glass of prosecco comes our way and as we take a break our little team shares thoughts on colours, feathers, embellishments – and the skill and strength required to get a needle through this pinokpok stuff! Amanda keeps a watchful eye, offering advice along the way and supporting our suggestions about what would look good on our headpieces – I forage and find some angular feathers to balance on the base adjacent to my (I think) impressive silver flower. It’s enormous fun. Like being in the millinery version of a sweet shop. My own creation really pleases and

surprises me – I plumped for colours and a style I thought was ‘me’ (see below right) – but the workshop would be perfect for a wedding or race day guest with an outfit that they wanted to accessorise with their unique stamp. I can’t think of anything nicer than a mum and daughter or sisters going along to make a headpiece for a celebration day. The completed headpieces are all overseen by Amanda and ‘ready-to-wear’ straight away – she fits them for you with a band so they will stay in place. “You’re crafting a hat that will really be a reflection of yourself ”, says Amanda. It’s a delicious day to remember and your couture headpiece holds a value of £200-£300. Now, where to wear it? Amanda Field Millinery can organise a range of bespoke millinery days: from millinery introduction courses for 6-20 people to a ‘Beautiful You’ day which will include a makeup artist and personal hat-styling with a photo shoot. She will also organise ‘hen’ days and motherdaughter sessions. Day experiences at the Talbot from £140.

EYES ON EYAL
Love the curls What a summer it’s been! Soaring temperatures, blue skies and lots of alfresco dining; the UK hasn’t seen a scorcher like this since 1976! But let’s not hope it’s over just yet. Now unless you were walking around all summer with your eyes and ears closed, you can’t have escaped the impact that the TV show, Love Island had. It dominated - and continues to dominate, magazines, press and social media. So we thought it only fitting to share with you some gorgeous curls. We were 100% hooked this year as one of
44 www.luxe-magazine.co.uk
our fave male models, the very hot Eyal was one of this year’s favourites, sadly he didn’t find love but certainly gave us some TV gold moments! Eyal has genuinely got the most enviable hair! It’s naturally curly and left to its own devices falls into the most dreamy texture that looks super cool - and I think the girls love it! For this picture we wanted his girl to look every bit as cute with a full head of spiral curls that would give him a run for his money. Hard to believe, but her hair is naturally very straight! Using a very small tong, starting at the nape we took inch sections which were each spritzed with a flexible holding spray. Using a root tonging
method the hair is wound from root to tip and held at the end until sufficient heat has passed through the hair to create an even curl. This technique ensures that you get as much curl and shape at the root area as you do on the ends giving a spiral curl that looks really natural. It’s very hard to tell which of these two has the natural curl which is testament to how great this tonging technique works. So if you fancy having #curlsfordays then get tonging and release your inner Love Island diva. Michael Young and Gary Hooker run Hooker & Young, with five salons regionwide. www.hookerandyoung.co.uk

LUXE LIFE
LIV LORENT Liv Lorent MBE is the artistic director of award-winning dance theatre company balletLORENT. Liv is a highly acclaimed choreographer and feminist voice, championing diversity within dance. balletLORENT is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year with an exhibition of images and stories from the archives opening in September, and four nights of performance, dance and music, After Dark, in November; both of which take place at Northern Stage. Liv lives in Newcastle upon Tyne with her young family.
LUXE PEOPLE >> My family are everything to me. Not only my partner, children, in-laws and other relatives, but the balletLORENT family who I spend much of my life with. We are celebrating our 25th anniversary this year and some of the dancers in the company have been with me since the first decade. We have shared a great many experiences and toured together a lot, both across the country and the world, and the ups and downs in these adventures inevitably bonds us closely together. LUXE PLACES >> for a weekend > My partner Ben Crompton (actor in Game of Thrones) and I and our children love the North, and we might go for a night somewhere in Northumberland, the Lake District, Manchester, Yorkshire or Edinburgh. Somewhere with not too much travel time! a long holiday > Never been on one. In my dreams, the Maldives..?
46 www.luxe-magazine.co.uk
a treat > Like most parents of young children, an amazing treat is just having a little time alone together. LUXE RELAX Best food > A really great steak tartare. Best wine > In summer Picpoul de Pinet, and winter Chateauneuf du Pape. Favourite restaurant > I love The Stand in Newcastle. It’s a comedy club but they also have a fantastic bistro and a great terrace out at the back. It’s perfect for a family meal. We had our son’s tenth birthday tea there and the staff and the food are so brilliant. Perfect weekend > Weekends can often mean working, with workshops or touring somewhere across the country with our productions, so a perfect weekend would probably include a lot of relaxation and time with Ben and our children. Downtime > When I get a moment to sit and enjoy the excellent coffee at Settle Down
Café in Newcastle. Caffeine really helps me keep going, and I rely on this wonderful and unpretentious place to help me recharge! Best telly > Game of Thrones obvs. Favourite book > Carol Ann Duffy’s The Lost Happy Endings. It has so much to it as a story, and really kicks off your imagination with regards to re-inventing classic fairy tales and giving them new happy endings. It will be the story for our next balletLORENT production next year. Best sounds > Murray Gold, our incredible composer who has created the music for Rapunzel, Snow White and Rumpelstiltskin. He has done numerous television and film scores too, and is totally at the top of his game. We have all of his Dr Who music on CD. LUXE SHOP >> Favourite shop > TK Maxx. I grew up wearing clothes from charity shops, so I’m very happy treasure hunting when there might be only one or two of everything in a shop. Luxe retail treat > I love to see Lynda at Space NK on Grainger St, and inevitably come away with a wonderful something I’ve bought, and a tester for something new. Not only does she have amazing wisdom and patience, and incredible style, she watches all of the balletLORENT productions, and is usually there for the premiere!
Best buy > I like using canvas Man bags as handbags in the summer. Lighter, cheaper and more practical. LUXE PARTY >> My brother got married in Poland a few years ago. It was amazing to experience the drinking games with great vodka and group singing and dancing. I loved it. Perfect Party > For me, the balletLORENT fundraisers are just the best fun. The dancers really know how to get the party started - and keep it going! For me it’s always the people rather than the place, and whenever my partner, kids and the extended balletLORENT family get together it’s the perfect party. Best dress > I like my black All Saints dress, which I wore when I went to Buckingham Palace to receive my MBE for Services to Dance in 2014. My daughter was six months old, and I was still breastfeeding and wondering how all that was going to work out, but I managed to stay feeling glamorous that day which was quite a rare experience! Dinner date > Ben. Or the present Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch. (Ben in character and costume!) YOUR LUXE THING IN LIFE >> balletLORENT of course…

TOP TEN TIPS FOR FRESH BREATH >> Have you ever felt a bit worried that your breath may not be as sweet-smelling as it could be? Fresh breath is so important – not just to maintain good oral hygiene, but also to boost our confidence in our daily lives, whether we have an important meeting, after-work drinks, a party or a date. It can be tough to have a conversation with someone if you’re self-conscious about your breath. With this in mind, I’ve put together my top ten tips to help you say farewell to bad breath for good. 1. Brush your teeth and gums for at least two minutes, at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste. At Honour Health, we recommend using an electric toothbrush for more effective, thorough brushing in those hard-to-reach areas. 2. Replace your toothbrush every three to four months to keep it working at its best. 3. Brush your tongue when you brush your teeth. The majority of bacteria forms on the back of the tongue, so it needs a regular clean. Some toothbrushes have a built-in tongue cleaner especially for this purpose. If yours doesn’t, use a separate toothbrush or a tongue scraper. Aim to gently clean the whole surface of the tongue, starting from the back and working towards the front. 4. Floss between your teeth daily to remove any trapped food. It’s important to get to all the little crevices between your teeth, to get rid of any pieces of food that you can’t get to with your toothbrush. 5. Rinse your mouth daily with mouthwash, at a different time of day to when you brush your teeth. 6. Give up smoking. 7. Drink lots of water. If your mouth is dehydrated, bacteria will start to break down food particles that have not been washed away – and this causes bad breath. 8. Chew sugar-free gum after eating, to stimulate the flow of saliva around your mouth. 9. Cut down on sugary foods, because they can increase the amount of bacteria lurking in your mouth. It’s also a good idea to cut down on strongly flavoured or spicy foods such as onions and garlic, as well as coffee and alcohol. Instead, eat vegetables high in vitamin C such as red peppers and broccoli, which help to banish mouth bacteria. 10. Visit your dentist and hygienist regularly. We recommend our Honour Diamond Airflow hygiene treatment, which instantly removes heavy staining and disrupts plaque lurking under the gums, creating a brighter, whiter smile and fresher breath. Book a free consultation at www.honourhealth.co.uk or call your chosen practice below to see how we can help. PARKLAND PASSIONS

PARKLAND PASSIONS
E s ta t e of m i nd Laura de Wesselow’s life runs at a pace, juggling the day-to-day running of her family’s Belsay Estate in Northumberland. It’s a labour of love in a ‘magical, spiritual’ place, she tells Kathryn Armstrong Laura de Wesselow is forced into being a woman of lists. She lives life at spin speed, albeit within the otherwise calming surroundings of the Belsay Estate in Northumberland. We meet on a Friday morning just as the family is preparing for a holiday in Corfu. A period of time that always presents a challenge (pool-ready pedicure also on the list for later in the day). Today the list will not only include us but has already involved an early morning ride, checking in on estate business, the day’s Pony Club fixtures and some essential pony prep on Sam. As the family’s lurcher puppy lollops on the lawn of the de Wesselow’s handsome home (built as part of the estate in 1756), Laura is reversing a horse box into the stable yard. It will transport Sam the pony a mile or so down the road for his duties as part of Laura’s latest project, Belsay Woodland Burials. We follow behind and then stand by as he’s harnessed up – superbly well-behaved – in preparation for an important job. Sam will lead a wooden ‘coffin cart’ carrying a beautiful wicker casket entwined with fresh flowers to the Belsay burial site for what will be its second woodland burial; today a Quaker ceremony. It’s a gorgeous sunny day and we watch the casket travelling gently down the country lane to be greeted by waiting mourners. It’s unhurried, elegant and comforting in its simplicity. Laura leading the way with Sam and two undertakers present.
SEP/OCT18
Laura had the idea to create the woodland burial site as part of a number of projects to ensure the survival and sustenance of the Belsay Estate, which has been in her family for centuries. Laura is the last of the Middleton family which has long owned Belsay. Her father Henry ‘Harry’ Middleton, the tenth baronet, was a page at the coronation of King George VI. With no male heir, the family title became extinct on his death and the estate was put in trust. Laura came back to run it in 2005 with husband Peter and their children Delilah, now 19, Caspar, 17 and Xanthe, 15. Living in London she gave up a senior role with a major PR company having worked for clients such as M&S and Ray Ban, studied to become a garden designer and found the pull of Northumberland impossible to resist. “I always came to Belsay as a child, staying at Lake Cottage for holidays and was married here. We came back and the children have grown up here. “I didn’t feel under pressure to come (and run the estate) but I felt drawn and that I really wanted to do it – both sides of my family are from Northumberland.” Laura’s grandmother, Lady Sybil Grey who lived in Howick, was the daughter of Albert,
4th Earl Grey. She went on to lead the Women’s Legion in war-torn France, forming a unit of English surgeons and nurses before marrying Lambert Middleton. Predecessors from the Middleton family had run the estate as a traditional agricultural concern. Laura’s challenge became; “to make it a viable proposition and bring it in to the modern world - we had to look at ways of creating more commercial income streams.” Belsay Estate is dominated by the grand hall, gardens, parkland and the ancient castle. Belsay Hall is run under the guardianship of English Heritage and the parkland within a charitable trust. One of the first tasks for Laura, who is passionate about horses, was the establishment of the Belsay Horse Trials five years ago. The estate had suitable heritage. The Middleton family’s 800-year history included breeding and training racehorses in the 18th and 19th centuries. “My passion is for horses and Belsay - and to show off the parkland which is Grade I listed. It has charitable status and we’ve got to show it to the public – the horse trials are when we show it off and the event gives us a focus in terms of restoration such as tree planting and the new stallion stables. The event has a lovely feel to it – we work really hard all year so it feels like a party. “People will come and see the hall and gardens but they don’t often see the parkland so it’s lovely that they can. I adore doing the project because it combines my passions – and it involves local >>

businesses – corporates from Newcastle or smaller people bringing a trade stall or food outlet – the wider community that we enjoy getting involved in.” Laura loves the sense of community the Belsay Estate has, notable compared to her past life in the south, “Northumberland and the North East are unique and so integrated. It doesn’t matter what your background is as long as you are a genuine person. “Business people, financial, entrepreneurs are all in the mix – you don’t get that in the south. Up here people are very connected through country sports or the local cricket club”, says Laura. Her role within the estate is essentially of project management – from the woodland burials to never-ending maintenance – she rides her horses around the grounds checking fences, gateways and buildings. She’s the go-to for issues concerning the renovation of buildings on the estate – from planning applications to organising the cascade of contractors who might be

needed to complete work. This isn’t an estate with the luxury of its own team of maintenance staff for the many cottages, farms and village houses. “It is project management on a huge scale”, jokes Laura. “I have a butterfly mind; dealing with the mundane, but then with things that can seriously impact the estate – septic tanks and neighbour disputes! “Then there are the calls from historians or, bizarrely, from people with strange requests – such as challenging themselves to swim in water connected to castles! “There’s always a little drama but that’s the colour of any rural community.” Laura admits that the woodland burials create a sense of calm in an otherwise frenzied world. “It is quite therapeutic”, she says, “I live life at a fast pace but as soon as someone comes to the office to talk about a woodland burial you stop, listen and forget everything else. We’ve got time, there’s no hurry.
“A lot of people come to Belsay and have a real connection with it. About six years ago I started looking into eco burials and woodland funerals. “We’re close to the city and you have to harness that. I thought, we shouldn’t build a lot of holiday yurts but should build something that connects people. “I firmly believe that there is a special spirit about Belsay – you get that when you walk through the hall, the Quarry Gardens and to the castle. It is slightly magical, definitely spiritual – connecting disconnected worlds – Victorian, medieval – and I think that there’s something very special about it. “It has been fascinating doing it – if you’d said to my first boss 25 years ago that Laura’s going to be working with bereaved people – she probably would have laughed, so would I, but I think there has been a real sea-change in the way we deal with grief. “I lost my parents when I was 28. When I was a child death wasn’t talked about,
children didn’t go to funerals. If a grown up died they had just gone to heaven – no-one told you why. “Everything is changing and the whole woodland burial movement is part of that. We are challenging traditional – the Victorian ways of treating death. One of the things I really enjoy now is letting people come in and tell you their story.” Whether Laura’s own children will continue to work within the estate remains to be seen. Eldest daughter heads to Edinburgh University this month, Caspar (who writes the NUFC fans’ blog, Toon Times), is at Eton and youngest Xanthe is at school in York, and competing at the highest level in Pony Club trials. “We’re in a position where my husband and I believe in equality and that primogeniture is not a great thing. “The children can be involved but might split it between them – it will be a question of finding out who is the best fit for it.” www.belsaywoodlandburials.com

Finding Space
I’ve always loved to read. When I was six my teacher sent a note home to my mam telling her that she had to find me new books as I’d read everything in the school library. My dreamiest day always includes a leisurely wander around a bookstore and some of my most prized possessions are of the literary variety! I love to gift books and receive them from others — I never feel more ‘seen’ or cherished than when I’m given one. Throughout my life, much of my reading was about acquiring knowledge. I filled my head with all manner of things ‘just in case’. I also read to escape, from whatever madness or sadness was going on around me, as many of us do. Then several years ago, I realised I was ready to read for a different reason — for perspective and for expansion, and I started to read more broadly. Now many philosophy, spirituality and poetry texts have shifted my centre and expanded my view such that I can see more of myself, more of others and more of the world – and that’s enabled me to live in a more spacious and connected way. Here are five of my all-time favourite books of this flavour, that I hope can gift you with expansion and perspective too: The Alchemist — by Paolo Coelho >> At the heart of this book is the belief that life is a journey and that we’re all universally connected to our own destiny, to each other and to the wider world and beyond. A soulful read, that will offer you perspective, hope and courage. Silence — Thich Nhat Hahn >> In a world full of noise, we under-value silence. Rarely in life do we get it or allow others to take it. Written by a widely respected Buddhist monk, this book will increase your comfort with silence, so that you can use it more effectively in life and benefit from its many gifts. The Prophet — Kahlil Gibran >> Almost one-hundred years old, this book, written by philosopher Kahlil Gibran is a sequence of fables, that offer an alternative take on universal aspects of life, such as work, love and time. The essence of the book is one of the power of relinquishing control and the peace of living in the moment. The Little Prince — Antoine De Saint-Exupery >> Originally written in French and translated into many languages, this classic book is relevant to children and adults alike. For all of us, the lesson is not to take life too seriously, and to value the simple things. One to dip in to when you’re feeling uptight or overwhelmed with complexity. The Untethered Soul — Michael A. Singer >> A soulful but accessible read — if you’re keen to begin or continue deep inner work, then this book is for you. Reading it will ignite your curiosity about who you are in the world, and about how you want your life to be. If you read any of these books I’d love to hear your reflections – you can tweet me @space_with_in Take care for now, Laura

Generation We’re talking to people with a positive attitude to mid-life, doing things differently, changing their pace of life, their priorities, reflecting on what’s gone before and the new opportunities and challenges to come Graeme Robinson’s passion for the perfect pint led to a radical career change in his late 40s when he ditched the corporate world in favour of setting up his own ale houses. He’s restored the former ladies’ waiting room at Durham Station to its Victorian splendour and here he welcomes thirsty travellers with a showcase of local ales and famous Northern hospitality.
I used to do this…
I spent 14 years as Head of Facilities and Security at a North East university, leading a large department of over 200 staff delivering front line services. It was a highly stressful role and meant I was permanently on-call to deal with incidents and all university related crime.
Now life is about… Wonderful ale! I have set up a leisure company, Ouseburn Leisure Group and plan to create a series of ale houses. The Waiting Room, housed in an 1872 northbound platform building in Durham Railway Station, was the first to open in February this year. Now I’m looking for the perfect location for the next.
Why/how I made a change… I’m 47 years old now, which in my head is ‘proper grown up’. That, for me, brought a few anxieties! I did quite a bit of thinking about how I wanted the latter years of my life (and lifestyle) to pan out.

STYLE
Like most people I had always dreamed of working for myself, doing something that was of interest as well as fun but not that stressful. Having already done the whole corporate/senior management thing I very much wanted to be in charge of my own destiny. I’ve never been very good with the rigidity of 9-5 working. I craved a change that would not only offer a greater level of flexibility but would also remove a constant level of worry and anxiety that a stressful and reactionary job brings with it. I initially thought about entering into the traditional pub trade via the brewery-owned route, but quickly ruled that out as most pubs were in the wrong locations or didn’t offer what customers today are looking for. So I thought that if I can’t get the right deal on the right pub in the right location then I would need to build and develop my own – a micro pub. Funding the move was obviously a big step towards making this huge-life change and a loan from Transmit Start-ups got us off the ground. After a great first six months at the Waiting Room we are looking for further opportunities.
Wear it well...
Things are different because… I am now in control of my own destiny. I am busy doing what I want to do, when I want to do it.
The people who are important… Family is obviously the most important thing in life. When it comes to business I think it’s really important to find a few trusted people that you can call on for advice, whether they are friends or former colleagues. It’s also good to know I have people around me that I can trust to always do the right thing for the business and for me.
A day in the life of me… I arrive at Durham at 7.30am and make sure the bar is set up, ready to operate and open at 10am. If we’re not cleaning lines or managing the cellar then the mornings are spent sorting deliveries and ordering stock for the coming week – this can be quite tricky when choosing the right beers that will sell at the right prices and anticipating how much beer you will need (and can fit in the small cellar in the Grade II listed station building). The rest of the day is spent welcoming customers, visiting the cash and carry, meetings with the accountant, suppliers and designers who are working on the next project. Of course my favourite ‘job’ of any day involves sampling new ales…

ageless I thrive on…
Achieving and getting things right first time. Business for me is basically all about constantly assessing, managing and minimising risk. Someone once said to me that ‘the paranoid survive’ and this really resonates with me. Some people think I’m a bit of a control freak, when in actual fact it is all about managing risk – if it can go wrong, it probably will (unless you proactively manage it).
Mid-life means to me…
For me mid-life has brought a realisation that you really are in control of your own life and destiny. Things aren’t handed to you on a plate. If you want to improve your standard of lifestyle, improve your work/life balance or simply do something more enjoyable then YOU need to make this happen yourself. Success normally brings a level of risk-taking with it – risk that you need to manage.

NEW SEASON SIGNINGS
ON THE HOOF with Deborah Smith

Deborah reflects on a scorched summer season and autumn dates for the diary What a scorcher of a summer we have had! With endless sun and little rain, the challenge for this summer has been finding somewhere to ride on the hard-as-concrete ground! My horses Oli and Strider don’t seem to care how firm the ground is, but we have been trying to take it steady and a heading to events run on a surface or where the ground has been carefully managed and prepared to give the best possible conditions. I certainly don’t envy people who stage big events in this country! We are so weather influenced and every year seems to bring a new set of challenges. But we have had a great time, with Oli and I going to Bishop Burton show jumping then out eventing and dressage; we have qualified for some autumn championships so lots to look forward to still this season. Strider who has been out doing Pony Club and dressage with Verity Ward while her own pony gets over a tendon injury, has qualified for the British Dressage Under 25’s championships as well as having a fantastic fun week at Pony Club camp! The boys are on fire this year! So not much down time here, and looking forward to a few spectating opportunities coming up with Blair Horse Trials, Burghley and then the World Equestrian Games at Tryon (North Carolina) 10-23 September. Sadly, I will be watching on TV not spectating there this time! The GB teams are shortlisted and there are plenty of opportunities for medals among them, so I can’t wait to see how the different events

pan out. Fingers crossed for riders and horses. Plenty of eyes will be on shortlisted rider Charlotte Dujardin CBE and her exciting young horse, Mount St John Freestyle. Back home, the north of England has continued to shine as a region hosting the very best equestrian competitions with the FEI Pony European Championships being held on home soil at Bishop Burton College during August. So, with many riders’ competition season drawing to a close for 2018, this is the time of the year when people often look to buy their new horse/s to work on through the winter and to produce for 2019. For a truly luxe time out, and with sales from October to December, those with a serious investment to make head to Tattersalls, Europe’s leading bloodstock auctioneers. Founded in 1766 Tattersalls holds a long and rich history, having started selling horses at Hyde Park Corner in central London. To this day its presence is still noted at Hyde Park corner with wall murals leading to Wellington Arch of its founder and the sales taking place. Today Tattersalls is the largest bloodstock auctioneers in Europe, offering 10,000 thoroughbred horses at its HQ in Newmarket, Suffolk, and in Ireland. Each year the racing fraternity descend on its sale ring to buy the next champion – including Derby and Royal Ascot winners. Records tumble with buyers, including sheikhs and royals, going to head-to-head in bidding wars and spending millions of pounds. Last year Tattersalls sold the highest priced horse ever at European auction for £6m and had a record breaking annual turnover of over 330 million pounds.

POD PERFECT >> Have you got a spare bit of water just made for luxe living? Luke Robertson is the man behind a new business creating floating ‘micro-houses’. He’s created portable ‘pod’ homes that can be bought fully furnished and installed as waterside retreats – by rivers, lakes, ponds and oceans. And you can even spend the night in one – at the showcase ‘flotel’ on Hartlepool Marina. Robertson Marine Group’s prototype pod is currently on show at the marina with a compact and cool interior with double bed, kitchen area, wet room, outside seating space, a Bluetooth speaker system and even WiFi, all ingeniously fitted on to a deck just 4x6metres. CITY CALM
LOCATION >> Nestled in a quiet, leafy Notting Hill neighbourhood. Housed within a tuckedaway corner townhouse, white and lovely and typical of west London, it’s a short jog away from glorious Hyde Park and only a minute or two from Bayswater tube station (it’ll take you around 20 minutes to get into central London - not bad at all). It isn’t the swankiest of areas, but it is by no means shabby. The street is home to one or two tired-looking buildings, but the hotel is a good-looking spot indeed. We love the outdoor terrace, shaded by lush olive trees and manicured bushes, the perfect place to enjoy brekkie and brunchy bites.
A suite stay
Jessica Laing cosies up at La Suite West Hotel, a small and chic boutique hotel in Notting Hill, made for minimalists, healthy-eaters and quiet souls…
STYLE >> Unfussy interiors addicts with a love of all things basic and monochromatic will no doubt be pleased. British designer Anouska Hempel is behind the inside aesthetics; lots of black and clean, white space, with a nod to Japan over in the bedrooms. Sleek, modern furnishings (note the slinky white marble desk and moody low fire feature in the lobby), throughout, dark marble flooring, a petite, near-empty, dining room and inky black walls in the corridors. If you like your traditional hotels, or feel gloomy, or boxed in, in small, dark spaces, then it’s not the place for you. But if you’re quite partial to the whole minimalism thing, you’ll probably love it. The atmosphere is deliciously laid-back throughout; so serene, in fact, that staff speak in a gentle, soothing whisper and we didn’t hear a single peep from other guests during the night, or at breakfast. Super relaxing and a peaceful night’s sleep is near guaranteed - just what you need after days spent strolling and shopping up and down London’s busy, crowded streets. WHAT’S ON OFFER >> It’s a small hotel, so don’t expect all the bells and whistles, but there’s enough to keep easygoing guests happy. Gym bunnies have a place to work up a sweat (personal trainers are on hand if you’re into that), late-night snackers can take advantage of room service and there’s free, well-behaved WiFi throughout. In-room spa treatments are also on offer if you fancy a bit of pampering. Think mani/pedis, facials and massages, alongside hairdressing and makeup.

LAY YOUR HEAD >> We took a junior suite for two, but there are other options, including superior double rooms, petite doubles, long-stay bedrooms with fully-equipped kitchenettes, and spacious family rooms. There are 79 rooms in total, running along narrow, black, low-lit corridors, but our home for the night was accessed from outside. A bit like a mini apartment, you could say, with steps leading up to our own, big, chunky front door (you’re given card key access). They’re the biggest rooms the hotel offers - though still petite, especially for two people, by anyone’s standards. Inside, you’re met with a four-poster bed, a plush sofa bed (which our chum decided to sleep on all weekend long after discovering how comfy it was), a small dining area and one hell of a bathroom. Think floor-to-ceiling grey marble, toasty heated flooring, a deep, sunken bath with rainforest power shower and sparkling, steam-resistant mirrors (quite handy after hours spent in the tub). Plenty of fluffy towels and White Company toiletries are provided. Design-wise, expect a few oriental nods, including neat sliding wood shutters, hiding
the wardrobes, which add a touch of zen. Bedsheets and linens were crisp and white, pillows were marshmallow-soft, but the mattress proved a little too stiff for my liking - though, as pointed out earlier, I did end up sleeping like baby. With just a few clicks of the remote, you’ll find your 32-inch flat screen TV appears like magic at the bottom of your bed. You get a mini fridge, too, stocked with free water but expect no booze or chocolate. We stocked it with our own tempting treats from Harrods’ Food Hall. We suggest you do the same for when the midnight munchies hit. FOOD AND DRINK >> La Suite West is an alcohol-free hotel and its menus favour vegan and veggie plates - some showcasing ‘raw’, trendy ingredients. It even does its own take on vegan afternoon tea, which is very popular. Finger sandwiches are filled with the likes of vegan cheese, roast aubergine, mixed roast peppers and coronation tofu with vegan mayo and falafel, homemade fruit scones are served warm with whipped coconut cream and fresh strawberries. All cakes and desserts are made with wholesome, plant-based ingredients and you get a glass of non-alcoholic fizz, or a mocktail. Nice herbal teas and good quality coffee, too. If this isn’t your thing, you’ll be left disappointed - and hungry. Best to dine out. But if you do like your healthy grub, or are choosing to give your liver a bit of a break, then it’s likely you’ll find something you enjoy. We had dinner plans elsewhere in the city, but chose to have breakfast - an incredibly relaxed affair - in the hotel. Morning eaters are presented with a (very) small, but perfectly-formed, buffet of buttery French pastries, fruit, yogurt and cereals, fresh, crusty bread and spreads and a selection of cooked meats and cheeses. The a la carte menu, meanwhile, serves up vegan and veggie fry-ups, eggs and avo, healthy berry porridge and more. We tried the kitchen’s take on a vegan fry-up (essentially vegan sausages, baked beans, tofu and tumeric scramble and sautéed mushrooms), but found the hunks of seedy toast, slathered with the likes of Nutella, crunchy peanut butter and jam, far more appetising. A shame, really, considering the place prides itself on its plant-based offerings. Our chum, however, devoured her vegetarian breakfast (same as the vegan, but with wonderfully runny poached eggs) in mere moments, as well as our vegan leftovers. Go with what you fancy. HOTEL HIGHLIGHTS >> Overall, a very pleasing stay indeed. Sometimes, you want to lay your head in London’s buzzy city centre, in the depths of the hustle and bustle, but other times, especially if you’re staying a while (we stopped by for a long weekend), opting for a more peaceful location outside of town, and a more modest venue, such as La Suite West, is just the ticket. Simple and unfussy, yet chic in style and individual in character. And spotlessly clean and well-organised, thanks to a small team of friendly and helpful staff. Stand-outs, for us, were the big, glossy bathroom (seriously dreamy and Instagramworthy) and the cool reception area, with its flickering, James Bond-esque fire feature. Oh, and the crunchy peanut butter and proper Nutella at brekkie - both quite hard to find in hotels these days, don’t you know? It’s all about the little extras, folks.

ISLAND VIBE
ISLAND LIFE Hip hotels with Debrah Dhugga Our travel princess finds a place in the sun if you’re aching for the summer to linger a little longer…
From Mamma Mia to Greek salads, there’s a renewed love for Greece and her islands so I was delighted to dive in to one of the hottest new openings this year – the Nana Princess in Crete. HOTEL >> Nana Princess opened its doors in June this year and proved the perfect spot for a long weekend in the sunshine. Located on the north side of the island and set on a stunning beachfront, it’s just a 20-minute drive from the airport, which is exactly what you need on a short break. The hotel consists of 112 luxury suites and villas, all with stunning views of the Cretan Sea, and most boasting their own heated private pool or whirlpool. Some even have the addition of their own private gym, SoulSteam room or SoulSauna, created by the award-winning Starpool. If some R&R, good food, and vitamin D is what you’re after, then you’ve found your happy place. My long chillout weekend was spent soaking up the glorious Greek sunshine, either by my own private pool or around one of the hotel’s two outdoor seawater pools - or by the beach (in colder months there are also indoor pools). Afternoons were spent pampering myself in the Nana Princess Health Club and Spa which offers a total luxe wellness experience. For me, part of any holiday is enjoying new food and wine, and tasting new flavours. In this hotel there’s so much choice with its three stylish bars and restaurants with menus exclusively created by Greek Michelin star chef, Lefteris Lazarou.
with their own private swimming pools and the choice between a gym or a SoulSauna. Sports fanatics, on the other hand will love the fitness suite, with its 34m2 outdoor pool, contemporary gym equipment and luxurious finishes including iPads and Nespresso machines. RELAX >> Spa-time lured me to the world-class spa in the form of the Royal Wellness Club, a haven for spa junkies. With luxurious facilities, a superb choice of targeted therapies and treatments and an extensive wet area, this is set to become a destination
A trip to the island of Spinalonga is also recommended, a former leper colony and subject of Victoria Hislop’s best-selling novel, The Island (which makes for a great holiday read whilst you’re there). If you’re keen to stay active, there’s an abundance of activities including mountain biking, horse riding and sightseeing excursions. Crete Golf Club is just a short drive away, and the kids can enjoy mini football, beach volleyball, art classes, scuba diving and children’s shows.
ROOMS >> During my trip, I stayed in the hotel’s Harmony Suite, which had stunning waterfront views of the beautiful blue sea to wake up to. It had a heated outdoor whirlpool and private gym with a view too - because I like to make sure I stay active on holiday to counter being a bit more indulgent with what I’m eating! Other accommodation options include Superior Rooms, which sleep three with king-size bed and sofa bed, spacious balcony, rain shower and sea views; a Deluxe Junior Suite has a private heated pool, sun loungers, deck chairs and dining table; and the Premium Energy Suites, which are designed to rejuvenate and relax, come

spa for Greece. Aside from the Spa System, Nana Princess offers a selection of signature luxury treatments lasting anywhere between 50-160 minutes. Whilst I was there, I tried the Minoan carob body scrub and a Sea Gold body wrap which left me feeling revived and ready for action! OUT & ABOUT >> Crete is Greece’s largest island, and is known for its varied landscape which ranges from fine-sand beaches to the White Mountains. History buffs and shopaholics will enjoy a trip to the capital, Heraklion, home to the renowned Heraklion Archaeological Museum and boutique shops.
FOOD >> Carpe Diem is the heart and soul of the resort. Breakfast is my favourite meal of the day, so the lavish buffet breakfast spread of fresh fruits, cooked selection and fresh pastries was really welcome. In the evening few things compare to dining with a view of the Mediterranean. Feast on delicious dishes of fresh, local ingredients skilfully prepared for an explosion of flavours. Meat-In point offers a convivial spot for lunch or dinner beside the pool. In the evening, the à la carte menu showcases mouth-watering meat cuts and a variety of fresh pasta, inspired by local cooking techniques, as well as showcasing aromatic Mediterranean flavours and
innovative international food trends. Seafood lovers will adore the Eternal Blue restaurant which sits at the waterfront, next to the lapping waves of the private beach. The exclusive eatery offers an abundance of fresh fish and seafood as well as a daily sushi selection. A very special location overlooking the picturesque bay. Evenings are rounded off with cocktails at Artemis Lounge & Lobby Bar, a sophisticated venue with live piano music, saxophone or jazz.
Factbox I travelled with BA to Heraklion airport in Crete, which is about four hours from London Gatwick - you can also get direct flights from Newcastle. Private airport transfers can be arranged by the hotel and take about 20 minutes door to door. Room rates at Nana Princess start from £135 per person per night in a Superior room category. BRIDGING THE FOOD GAP By The River Brew Co arrived on the banks of the Tyne just a few short months ago, but it’s already become one of NewcastleGateshead’s most sought-after social spots; a unique destination for casual, alfresco dining, sensational street food and freshly-brewed delights. What makes the place so enticing (and successful) is how brilliantly-simple the concept is. Just a few empty shipping containers, transformed into a laid-back waterside community, home to a vibrant, international street food market, a microbrewery and bike shop-cum-cocktail bar, and a seasonal, open-fire kitchen. Its whereabouts helps, too. Perfectlypositioned in the shadows of the iconic Tyne Bridge, on the Gateshead side of the river, the site boasts unrivalled views of Newcastle’s vibrant Quayside - a very

pleasing backdrop for cocktail-drinking and pizza-eating. For its creators, Rob Cameron and Dave Stone, location was key. “The Gateshead side of the River Tyne offers up unparalleled views - and it’s a real sun trap, too, especially late on in the day,” says Dave. “Standing on what was an empty stretch of land on Hillgate Quay, looking out over the water, we just felt it had incredible potential.” The dynamic duo - the brains behind Wylam Brewery, The Town Wall and The Bridge Tavern in Newcastle - stepped in just weeks after the local council’s ambitious plans to create the world’s largest ‘shipping container garden’ were scrapped. And thank goodness they did. If you’re a regular, like me, you’ll know just how great a place it is to be; somewhere to feast on the finest local treats, mingle with chums
under a glittering disco ball, kick-back with a few weekend beers, or celebrate a special occasion with a sit-down, Swedish-style meal. MARKET MUSTS >> Hawker Market is the heart of this cool container community. Every weekend, hundreds of hungry foodies make the journey over the Swing Bridge to reach it and for good reason. Inspired by Rob and Dave’s travels, it’s home to 15 independent foodie traders and a deliciously laid-back vibe. “HWKRMRKT was inspired by our trips to places like Bangkok, Philadelphia, Berlin and Copenhagen and the street food and markets we discovered there,” says Rob. “The North East’s independent food scene has gone from strength to strength over the past few years and we wanted to celebrate
that, giving local traders a place to show off their talents.” It’s a fun and unique dining concept, too. Instead of money, visitors pay for food with tokens - an “easy and clean way” for traders to handle money, say Rob and Dave. Simply swap your notes and coins for as many tokens as your heart and stomach desire and away you go. Food-wise, there’s something for everyone - from big-time burgers, loaded fries and wood-fired pizzas, to tapas and tacos, the freshest seafood, veggie-packed Mediterranean wraps, and vegan junk food. “We wanted to offer a good mix of cuisines, to suit all kinds of tastes and diets. Many of the traders you’ll meet today are people we’ve worked with before, through the food battle events we host at Wylam’, says Dave. LUXE’S TOP TRADERS >> Scream For Pizza: Wood-fired, Neapolitan-

and Sundays from 12pm-8pm. BRILLIANT BREWS >> Head over to the Tap Room for a pint of the good stuff in the on-site microbrewery. The space has 20 keg lines and serves the latest releases from some of the UK and the world’s best craft beer makers. “The Tap provides us with the opportunity to serve the perfect pour,” says Dave. “Because the beer is brewed on-site, it means it’s super fresh and in the very best condition when you buy it - that’s really important to us. We brew a core pale and an IPA - all other brews are one-offs.” BIKES & BARS >> The Backyard Bike Shop is a place of two halves. By day, it specialises in custom bikes - but by night, it transforms into a cool, after-dark cocktail bar, with a team of expert mixologists to muddle up favourite tipples.
FEAST IT UP >> Träkol, the community’s on-site restaurant, is your go-to. Träkol is Swedish for ‘charcoal’; an open-fire-style kitchen, focusing on nose-to-tail cooking and seasonal produce. Meat is a big hit here. The team share close bonds with farmers, choosing to use only rare and heritage British cuts, and work with trusted names like The Oxford Charcoal Company. “The concept at Träkol is to bring primitive outdoor cooking, indoors,” explains Rob. “Our mission is to produce the most flavoursome dishes, prepared in the most simple and effective of ways. We achieve this through good shopping and respect throughout the cooking process. Our meat is dry-aged on the premises and we use amazing wood from British woodlands everything from chestnut to cox apple trees - as fuel in our kitchen.”
Eating here is what you make it - the menu serves up plenty of options. Grab some mates and feast it up with mighty meats; a kilo of prime beef rib, half a pig’s head and a kilo of chop, with black pudding, caramelised apples and grilled potatoes. Try deep-fried reuben fritters, with French mustard and pickles, paired with crispy pig tails, beetroot pickled eggs and a few helpings of the flamed surf clams are our picks. Or the raw stuff - ox heart tartare and octopus ceviche - to make tastebuds sing. For more filling mains try chargrilled cauliflower steak, with warming shawarma spices and toasted almonds or a whole grilled Cornish mackerel, smothered in a zingy lime and peppercorn dressing - a thing of beauty. Eat up at Träkol Monday to Saturday from 12pm-3pm and again from 5.30pm-10.30pm, or on Sunday between 12pm-6pm.

Ground work Ingredients spill from the kitchen garden to the stove top to create inspiring seasonal menus at Askham Hall in Cumbria. Kathryn Armstrong pays a visit
Chef Richard Swale and his kitchen team have a little piece of paradise on their doorstep from which to pluck, harvest and forage ingredients for their daily menus at Allium restaurant. Its name alone brings the outside in and gives a sense of place, referencing as it does the beautiful purple allium flowers in abundance in Askham Hall’s gardens, but also the allium family that lays claim to the sister foodstuffs of garlic bulb and onion, mainstays of any kitchen. These are often the starting point for inspiring dishes that are gaining Richard growing acclaim as one of Cumbria’s most exciting chefs. Askham Hall lies just a few miles from Ullswater, not far from the A66. It nestles in a perfect little hamlet with a charm all its own. The Hall’s reputation for great food, gracious grounds and an abundant kitchen garden has also led to the opening of their Kitchen Garden Café in one of the hall’s renovated barns. Just a couple of miles away is another member of the clan, the George and Dragon – an acclaimed gastro

pub in the village of Clifton which also uses produce from Askham’s gardens. Food, growing and gathering lie at the heart of Askham’s kitchens says Richard Swale. “Allium is all about celebrating the relationship between our wonderful ingredients and how they are interpreted by our senses. We are on a journey of discovery, re-establishing old growing and preserving techniques as well as using modern cooking techniques to enhance flavour combinations”, he says. “My culinary identity is inspired by people I have learned from who do this and I have adapted this knowledge to create a cuisine rich in intuitive flavour combinations, texture and colour for people to enjoy.” Richard grew up in this area of Cumbria understanding the seasons, wild foods and produce from a childhood spent out shooting in the woods, fishing on the river Eden and looking after his own rare breed chickens, which he brings to Askham Hall. Having developed a passion for cooking at a young age he has spent the last 12 years working away from the area honing his skills and developing his cooking style.
He spent four years working with renowned chefs John Burton Race and Anthony Demetre in London. He also spent two years in France and had various stages around the world including NOMA in Copenhagen and with the famous 3 Michelin star French chef Marc Veyrat in Annecy who specialises in mountain plants and herbs. Since then he has gone on to refine his style in his five years at Askham, very much rediscovering his connection with the ingredients he grew up with. He has an exciting food playground since the gardens have been extended to grow dwarf fruit trees such as morello cherry, plum, damson and peach, as well as more exotic fruits, such as Japanese wine berries. ‘Hotbeds’ burst with veggie delights such as beetroot, radishes, carrots, rhubarb and leeks, to name just a few, and lunches served in the Kitchen Garden Café are prepared with produce straight from the land. The wider grounds offer foraging heaven with wild garlic, nettles and abundant herbs and plants. Menus are very much in tune with the landscape and the surrounding Eden Valley, with ingredients including Askham
home-reared chicken and Rough Fell lamb, the famous Goosenargh duck and of course, the coastal catch and delicacies such as west coast shrimps. Allium’s launch coincides with the creation of three new guest bedrooms in what was originally Askham Hall’s old stable block. The history of the building is immense, and the rooms include original leather tack once owned by the 5th Earl of Lonsdale – best known as ‘The Yellow Earl’ - to make each one truly unique. The latest additions are called ‘the Stable’, ‘the Tack room’ and ‘Train room’, which once was home to the Earl of Lonsdale’s extensive train collection. It brings the total number of bedrooms at Askham Hall to 18. The hotel itself blends the ancient and modern in a style that sees vast modern light fittings cast their light over furnishings that have a history all their own. The owner’s modern art looks striking on the strong aged walls and there’s a cool, ‘worn-round-the-edges’ charm that makes it a very restful place to stay put. www.askhamhall.co.uk

What’s on the menu >> Dinner at Allium offers up a seasonal feast at every turn with plates that deliver morsels that go from intricate to perfectly simple. Take the textural variety of a starter of scallop tartare. Shredded and seasoned scallop flesh on a base of earthy salt baked
beetroot and topped with a crispy battered mussel. As light as this was, it contrasted with the depth of rich flavours of an opposing starter of maple and coffee glazed quail. The soft-fleshed meat on the bone was rich and sticky and alongside a wee bon-bon of confit leg meat. Packing a zesty punch on this plate was pickled celeriac and then the piquant side pleasures of berryish fennel and blackcurrant ketchup. A real standout dish was roasted john dory, a silvery luscious piece of fish which had seasonal character by the trug-load. Presented with a mound of mixed grain risotto then garden-fresh fronds of wild garlic and seaweed tumbling over – with sweet nuggets of brown shrimps adding some nippy seafood texture. Dishes were served on plates and dishes made by the village potter adding a unique touch to the airy dining experience in the garden-facing room with its lovely Moorish-inspired tiled floor. Another main of spiced salt-aged Goosnargh duck breast arrived on a stunning grey plate and looked like a work of art. The gently pink and so-tender duck with a slight crisped edge was teamed with treats from that kitchen garden; a tiny turnip softly caramelised, and charred spring onion. Pickled green strawberries were new to me but their sharpness a good foil to the richness and texture of the duck. Also on the plate was a ‘duck fat waffle’ which was as appealingly indulgent as it sounds, half sweet, half savoury and melt-in-themouth moreish. A word about the wine list at Askham. It is blindingly impressive brought to you by Nico
Chieze. Loire Valley born, he is Askham’s beautifully welcoming ‘house manager’ and his knowledge of food and wine are impeccable. Meanwhile, desserts bring us back into the garden. In this case a gorgeously refreshing combination of just-plucked fruits. A light geranium set cream accompanied perky Yorkshire rhubarb and a so-refreshing granita made from Campari and blood orange. As someone who normally eschews desserts, this made me a convert. My chum is a hardcore dessert fan and loved (and ultimately, lost) the challenge of rich bitter chocolate, cardamom milk sorbet and a sesame crisp. Food lovers and foragers alike will love this place – stay over and you can spend the day pottering in the kitchen garden and stocking up on more treats to take home! Three courses, coffee and treats, £50. Tasting menu £65. www.askhamhall.co.uk

CHEF’S TABLE with James Close, two Michelin star chef at Raby Hunt A starry visit to Spain A word from Maria >>
Our pastry chef Maria was in Girona for a stage (chef placement) at El Cellar de Can Roca, one of the best restaurants in the world, (ranked second in the world’s 50 best restaurants in fact), so it was destination Spain for a weekend to eat at the restaurant and explore this area – which is about two hours from Barcelona. It’s a quick flight from Newcastle and Girona itself is a great place to visit; a well preserved city which is nice to wander around, full of history and atmosphere. We stayed at the W in Barcelona which is a pretty full-on party place of a hotel with dramatic views of the city from its waterside location. I have to recommend Rias de Galicia for dining. A great seafood restaurant in Barcelona where we had a memorable meal – it is a famous place in Barcelona and deserves its reputation. Fish as fresh as you can get and cooked to perfection. Crab cannelloni is honestly one of the best things I have ever eaten! I also ate barnacles for the first time and we had whole baked turbot and drank good albarino. There are big tanks of

This is how Maria Guseva’s month in the kitchen at the three star El Cellar de Can Roca went: “The restaurant is legendary so it was daunting to go there but they were so welcoming. “There is always one of the three Roca brothers working in the restaurant – it is how we work at Raby Hunt with James always in his kitchen. “You think that they will know more or that there is a secret to their kitchen but it is more that they have so many people working in there and so much attention to detail on the food preparation. “There were six or seven people in the kitchen on stages but it was a very calm place, no shouting and a willingness to teach you. If there was something you wanted to learn they would show you with great patience and kindness. “We worked a shift of 8am to 6pm so you had evenings free - that is unusual for a chef ! “The brothers’ mum, Monserrat Fontane is the inspiration for the Roca brothers’ lifetime of cooking and every day she cooks the staff meal which is served at 12 noon. By 1pm the restaurant is opening and serving customers!” *Maria will be at Fenwick Newcastle on 6 October with a range of Japanese-inspired handmade chocolates.
lobster there too. We also ate at Disfrutar – in English that means ‘enjoy’. It’s a place that was started by a team of guys who worked at El Bulli and is number 18 in the top 50 restaurants in the world. It’s quite a relaxed place, to me the food seemed a bit dated; lots of ‘deconstructed’ dishes – gazpacho became a gazpacho sandwich for example. We ate from the tasting menu at El Cellar
de Can Roca pictured above). It’s a restaurant I visited when I was just starting out on my food journey. It was the best in the world and I knew I wanted to emulate that. Eating there then and now was memorable, elaborate and impressive. This time we loved the desserts – notably clever things with blown sugar that we’re inspired to try at Raby Hunt. A definite highlight of the trip was another of the Roca brothers’ ventures, a quirky and fun ice-cream parlour. Rocambolesc is an ice-cream shop run by Jordi Roca, the chef patissier of El Celler de Can Roca. It’s a bit bonkers but definitely deliciouswith ice-creams made in amazing shapes and flavours – such as Jordi’s nose mould in raspberry and rose ice-cream. More delicious than you’d imagine! Ice-cream flavours are things such as watermelon and lemon sorbet with lime marshmallow and coconut cake, coconut with violet sorbet, honey caviar and violet marshmallow. Think of the ultimate Willy Wonka experience. Exquisite ice-cream, heaps of toppings and sauces – including candy floss - all made by a Michelin chef. They also do a hot brioche filled with ice-cream! www.rocambolesc.com
Things to do on a visit to Barcelona and Girona >> Markets La Boquería, the most famous market in Barcelona near La Rambla. Plenty of fresh food and somewhere to stop and eat from the many cafes in there. Loads of atmosphere and plenty of tempting smells from fresh fish to charcuterie. Culture The Salvador Dalí museum is in the town of Figueres which is an easy drive. His home town houses the Dalí theatre, a crazy place and a work of art in itself, designed by Dalí to showcase his paintings. The museum also houses his crypt and grave. Beach Cadaques is a beautiful coastal down not far from Girona. Its blue skies and sunlight drew painters such as Magritte, Matisse and Picasso and Salvador Dalí also had a studio nearby. A nice place to wander.

From Marlborough, which is situated in the North Eastern tip on the South Island of New Zealand, this wine is full of tropical fruits, such as passion fruit, yet still crisp and dry. Unmistakable example of a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. New world wine making which is taking the world by storm.
Circumstance (Waterkloof), Stellenbosch, South Africa 2016 100% Sauvignon Blanc 13.5% ABV
Method Scampi Make a pané area (pane means passing food through seasoned flour, beaten egg and breadcrumbs ready for cooking). Breadcrumb the langoustine tails (flour first, then egg, then breadcrumbs). Deep fry or shallow fry until cooked through and golden. Tartare Sauce Reduce fish stock in a pan by half, then add the cream and stir. Add shallots, gherkins, peas and capers. Simmer for 10 minutes and finish with the parsley (reserving some for garnish). Fish Pan fry the fish, skin side down, until the skin is crispy. Turn over and add a knob of butter. This wine maker takes the biodynamic approach to wine making, which is organic growing using agricultural practices based on the lunar calendar. With citrus fruits and hints of fennel, this wine also has mineral notes which balance the dry wine beautifully. Top quality organic wine making.
Pouilly-Fumé ‘Le Fusil de Chasse’ (Jean-Jacques Breton), Loire, France 2014 100% Sauvignon Blanc 12.5% ABV
This wine is from one of the top Sauvignon Blanc growing areas in the world. The wine region name itself, Pouilly-Fumé, gives a clue to one of the flavours in the wine. Fumé translates as smoke, which this wine has a slight hint of. It’s also packed with lemon and other citrus fruits. Wine making from the old world at its best.

Savouring the seasons WITH KAREN PHILLIPS be happy to remove some female flowers too if you are drowning under a mountain of courgettes. Remove the stamen inside the flower with tweezers along with any little resident black bugs, then stuff the flowers with ricotta cheese seasoned with chives and black pepper; twist the ends of the flowers to seal them and dip in tempura batter. HONEY & LAVENDER CAKE >> Northumberland Honey Company placed four bee hives here in April in preparation for our Introduction to Beekeeping Course and we have just tasted the first wildflower honey from Linnels Farm - is that a hint of tulip pollen? We have the pleasure of meeting the kindest people who come on our courses and one perfect example is two lovely sisters, Jenny and Carole, both green-fingered gardeners, who brought over a divine bouquet of their hand-dried lavender stems. I think of them each time I sprinkle a little bit of lavender and love into these cakes (adapted from a recipe in my now seriously battered copy of the Ottolenghi: the cookbook). This makes enough for 8 bun tins (or a 2lb loaf but it will need an extra 10 minutes in the oven).
Autumn is a time of plenty for the home gardener, particularly with this year’s epic summer weather. You’d be forgiven for thinking we were in Southern Europe with the hum of bees, a chilled glass of wine, ricotta stuffed courgette flowers, and a slice of honey and lavender cake… RICOTTA STUFFED COURGETTE FLOWERS >> When you live this far North it can be a struggle to get some crops to ripen before colder nights nip growth in the bud; pumpkins and sweetcorn can be particularly troublesome. Sweetcorn is one of the few seeds that I buy as F1; you pay a lot for these seeds and get very few in the packet but what they guarantee is uniform growth – farmers choose F1 so they can harvest everything at the same time. The home gardener usually wants to avoid a glut but it is essential for getting a ripe sweetcorn crop. When space is limited sweetcorn can seem to take up a lot of the plot since it is wind pollinated and needs to be planted in a grid system. You can optimise space and garner three crops in one by using the Native American ‘3 Sisters’ method: sweetcorn with dwarf beans plants climbing up them and squash plants planted in between. The huge squash leaves provide some shade over the roots and reduce the amount of water lost from the soil – of paramount importance this year!

Wildflower Honey 3 large eggs, beaten 250g self-raising flour pinch of salt 1/2 tsp of ground cinnamon 1tsp dried lavender flowers chopped 110ml soured cream Juice of half a lemon Icing sugar For the icing: mix juice of 1/2 lemon with 2tsp of honey and enough icing sugar to coat the back of a spoon – drizzle the cakes and sprinkle the remaining 1/2 tsp of lavender over the top. Cream the butter, honey and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs a little at a time, beating well after each addition. Fold in the flour, cinnamon, salt and 1/2 tsp of the lavender flowers along with the sour cream. Bake at 170°C for 25 minutes (longer if using the loaf tin) or until a skewer inserted in the centre of the cake comes out clean. Ice the cakes when cold.
JOBS TO SORT: • Potatoes: harvest on a dry day, leaving the soil to dry on the tubers before storing undamaged tubers in hessian sacks. Make the most of any damaged tubers by peeling, parboiling and rolling in goose fat – lay out on a flat tray then pop in the freezer. Bag them up when frozen for use over winter as super speedy roast potatoes! • Sow now in the veg plot: if you’re quick you can get a final crop of salad leaves sown, or have some cloches handy to keep a ready supply of salad leaves over winter. Order garlic varieties now for planting October onwards. • Harvest fruit: - late raspberries, apples, plums, damsons – if you are not going to use them immediately then get them in the freezer and use them over winter when you have more time to deal with them.

SUPER SUPPERS
It’s been a summer of showcase dining for food-lovers... The scorching summer brought a raft of sensational supper clubs to Fenwick Newcastle in celebration of The Great Exhibition of the North. Organised by Terry Laybourne, The Great Northern Supper Clubs gave food-lovers a rare opportunity to wine and dine in the company of some of the UK and the world’s most celebrated chefs all summer long. Those lucky enough to have nabbed themselves tickets will know just how much tasty fun the events dished up. Held in the serene and seriously goodlooking surroundings of Saltwater Fish Company and Porterhouse Butcher & Grill, inside Fenwick’s glossy Food Hall, guests sampled inspiring bites from big names, paired with the finest wines, and also had the chance to get up close and personal with the inspirational chefs. Prominent chefs - all of whom have a Northern connection - who have dished up and shared their story included Kenny
Atkinson of Newcastle’s only Michelin-star restaurant, House of Tides, Nigel Haworth, who heads up Northcote in Lancashire, and Frances Atkins of Yorke Arms in North Yorkshire - the first female British chef to win a Michelin star. In September, drawing the supper club season to a close, guest chefs will be Shaun Rankin and Andrew Pern - two huge names with decades of culinary experience between them. Both will be sharing anecdotes about their successful careers and the food they love to cook and eat, while showing off their kitchen skills in front of lucky ticket-holders in a laid-back, intimate setting. “The Great Exhibition of the North is an ideal backdrop to celebrate the many great chefs from the North working regionally, nationally and internationally,” says Terry. “The range of outstanding chefs shows the diversity of Northern cooking and food. It’s a unique opportunity for people in the region to sample great cooking, while also being able to meet and talk to the chefs in an informal setting.”
Tickets are £75 per person for a multi-course meal, including wine. For more details about the chefs and Great Northern Supper Club events, or to book tickets, visit www. saltwaterfish.co.uk.

PATTY PLEASER
FISH COURSE
WITH TERRY LAYBOURNE Yes, it’s a burger but perhaps not quite as you know it. A rather luxurious take on the classic burger, which is ideal for the BBQ or as a healthier supper option. It may be lighter than a beef burger but our fish version packs just as much punch. We craft it from scallops for sweetness and prawns for texture, also adding a little salmon which provides a beautiful colour and flavour contrast. This burger has created a real stir since its introduction to the Saltwater menu. The options for burgers are endless, dress up or dress down; make them as sophisticated or as straightforward as you like, we take the straightforward approach adding just our homemade relish which we feel allows the natural fish flavours to shine through.
Prawn and Scallop Burger SERVES 4 Ingredients Relish 2tsp caster sugar 1 level tsp white wine vinegar A pinch of black mustard seeds A good pinch of celery salt 20ml water 60g red onion 80g cucumber 10g tender celery heart 20g dill pickles 50g red peppers 45g tomato ketchup 45g American mustard Milled black pepper Burgers 4 x burger buns 50g Scottish salmon fillet 350g king prawns (shelled 100g scallops (without roe) 3 spring onions, 3 fresh red chillies 1 tbls chopped parsley Juice of half a lemon Tabasco sauce Salt and pepper A few lettuce leaves to dress A slice or two of beef tomato Olive oil for brushing
Method For the Relish Bring the sugar, vinegar, mustard seeds, celery salt and water to a boil. Dice the vegetables into small cubes. Pour the boiled liquid over the vegetables. Allow to cool, then cover with cling film and chill overnight. The next day, strain off the liquor and stir

the vegetables into ketchup and mustard. Season with black pepper. For the Burger Cut the scallops and salmon into 5mm dice. Puree the prawns in a food processor. Thinly slice the spring onions, deseed and finely chop the red chillies Stir everything together, adding the lemon juice, a dash of Tabasco and season with salt and pepper. Divide the mixture evenly into four patties. Brush each lightly with olive oil and cook in a non-stick frying pan until both sides are golden. Transfer to the oven at 175°C for 3 minutes until just cooked through. Split and toast the buns. Build each with a lettuce leaf, sliced tomato and the relish. Serve with a generous portion of chips.

G O O D TO S E A Terri Crosby is so very good at extreme luxury. An interior designer and home ‘fixer’ for footballers and billionaires, she’s just turned her hand to the renovation of a former station cottage in North Yorkshire with A-lister style at every turn. Kathryn Armstrong met up with her
For the equivalent of several weeks a year Terri Crosby soaks up a seemingly enviable lifestyle aboard a billionaire’s 85m super-yacht. It might be on the Med, it might be in the Caribbean, but whatever the views, Terri must ensure everything is ship shape – and some. The yacht is chartered but when its oligarch owners hop back on Terri has to make sure that it looks brochure-fresh, as though it’s never been touched. Itemised lists and photographs of everything from sock drawers to the bathroom cabinet ensure that everything is put back in its exact place. Terri’s discreet role is that of wardrobe manager and full ‘interior procurement and management’ which translates as sourcing and replenishing the finest bed linens, towels, robes, toiletries and interior pieces,

Through this company Terri designs interiors for luxury homes for individuals and for the high-end rental market. This is where the footballers come in. She also works alongside property owners who want to transform interiors for private or rental homes. Her own home in Northumberland is a wing of the historic Bolam Hall nar Belsay where she has lived for four years. It means there’s some serious wow-factor says Terri; “I saw the house on a walk one day and some time after saw it was for sale – it is the station house on the restored Leeming Bar to Redmire line of the Wensleydale railway – so there are still trains running at weekends – even an afternoon tea and ‘gin train’! “We tore it down and started again. I’ve used a lot of the suppliers who I go to for the yacht furnishings so it really is wonderful. Unlike a lot of the holiday houses you don’t have to race for the best bedroom! They could all be the main bedroom. “The style is relaxed, gentle and welcoming. Lots of texture and nice accessories to touch – cashmere, mother-of-pearl, the ultimate in pillows and towels, Yves Delorme robes and gorgeous Baobab candles. The best of what I’d choose for the yacht brought to Yorkshire!” Station House sleeps six and has a large enclosed garden complete with a hot tub and summerhouse. TREND WATCH with Kate Rose, founder of lifestyle brand, Tutti&Co A taste of new season style...
As we head into September, the children are back to school and the family routine resumes. My thoughts turn to the season ahead, inspired by autumnal vibes, I’m always on the lookout for new recipes, fashion and lifestyle inspiration. I do love the summer months, however the comfort and cosy feeling autumn brings is inspirational....
Eating...
Wearing... Lifestyle... Inspired by our coastal surroundings, the newest Tutti lifestyle collection brings inspiration from the North East coastline. Shades of blue mixed with neutral tones, make the perfect combination for any home. Simply add a new vase, wall art or a pair of stylish jars to any interior for elegant living. We have added a selection of wrapping paper, because the outside is just as important, as what’s on the inside.
As the seasons change I love a bit of retail therapy to update my wardrobe. My top pick for the autumn season is the snakeskin wrap dress from Zara. The perfect style for every occasion. Team with sneakers for a casual but stylish day time look, or add heels and a nude clutch for a dinner date. Versatile, stylish and bang on trend, a must for the season ahead.
New hangout... I love discovering a new hangout, and was delighted to see the newest addition to the up-and-coming fish quay in North Shields. Dodgins Yard, which is only a few minutes’ walk from Tutti HQ, is the perfect spot for a late brunch, a business lunch or a relaxed dinner date. Small but, perfectly formed, Dodgins Yard oozes style and atmosphere, bringing influences from the quay and surrounding areas. My favourite bite is the grilled halloumi flatbread with harissa and honey dressing – delicious.
Can’t live without... I was recommended magnesium supplements by a friend, and have been taking these for a few months now, I just can’t believe the noticeable difference to my wellbeing, and only wish I had known about these sooner. They come with a long list of health benefits such as collagen renewal, a healthy heart, essential for healthy mood, bones and teeth. Supporting energy and the nervous system for the daytime, and as a soothing and calming mineral in the evening, promoting natural sleep. A must for busy people, providing support during challenging times.

Listening to… Look out for the new album by Tom Odell - Jubilee Road .
As breakfast is the most important meal to set you up for a busy day ahead it is important to fuel your body with the right mix of ingredients. I’m always seeking out new recipes, and was lucky enough to receive a tasty breakfast in the office one morning from Emma our studio and design manager (actually Emma’s dad!). The perfect mix of super foods, healthy ingredients, autumnal flavours – and it was truly delicious. No better way to start the day... Take: Three heaped teaspoons of organic muesli One tablespoon of dried raisins / sultanas One tablespoon of cashew / pistachios Prepare four teaspoons of chia seeds; soak in coconut water overnight (this will last you for several days ) Soak the muesli mix in coconut water overnight In the morning add a heaped teaspoon of chia, a tablespoon of yoghurt and half a teaspoon of honey then mix together Topping: peel from an orange, slice of ginger, half stick of cinnamon, pack of dried prunes, organic earl grey tea bag. Cover in boiling water. Wait to cool. Remove tea bag and store in fridge . Add prunes to the top for real autumnal flavour.

Amble
Lobster pots, puffins and harbourside pods. Amble is becoming a seaside go-to for seafood lovers and surfers alike, not to mention a castle on the doorstep in neighbouring Warkworth
PROPERTIES >> You can get some affordable coastal living here – but it is a town ‘on the up’ thanks to a tourism-based economic resurgence of late. That has a lot to do with the attraction of great eating places – freshly landed lobster anytime you like. What’s not to love? So, there are neat little terraced cottages that would offer up a weekend retreat if you’re of a doer-uper persuasion. Or take a
CONNECTED >> Pretty handy if you’ve got your own boat – and living here might tempt you to get one. The 1068 road will get you to the A1 and A19 easily and you can hop on the east coast rail line at Morpeth or Alnmouth to whizz to Scotland, Newcastle and London. Ponteland is also relatively near to get you to Newcastle Airport easily.
If you’re going posh, Sea&Soil is a classy restaurant which covers all the bases in terms of great fish, good meat dishes and inspiring vegetarian food. Jaspers Bistro wins plenty of plaudits for skilful well-crafted seafood menus, lovely puds and great welcome.
EAT >> There are some really good fish restaurants in Amble, a place where the heritage of fishing boats means the catch is landed near enough daily. Plenty of seasonal catch for the burgeoning restaurants in Amble. These include the mighty popular Old Boat
look at Coble Quay, a Scandi-vibe development of energy-efficient apartments and shops overlooking the Coquet Estuary. It’s a sassy addition to Amble’s waterfront. The town has plenty of stone cottages, a traditional high street, access to good schools, plus heritage coastline on its doorstep. It was a working town, once a coal-exporting port - and retains that edge compared with the likes of chichi Alnmouth and Bamburgh – but you could argue that it ticks a ‘retro chic’ box these days - and basically anywhere with access to beach and boats is having a resurgence in the UK today. Amble sits beneath the gaze of Warkworth Castle and the lovely neighbouring town of Warkworth has good properties of all ages and character – many with views over the winding River Coquet that feeds into the sea at Amble. There’s a swathe of open countryside with well-price homes, including newbuilds nearby.
80 www.luxe-magazine.co.uk
Plenty of options for traditional fish and chips in the town too. And if you love your gelato then Spurellis is a mouth-watering destination – an award-winning ice-cream parlour with dreamy flavours, traditional and not-so much – elderberry and ginger anyone?
SHOP >> The town itself has a smattering of gift shops and galleries, growing all the time. Harbourside investment has created a little village of ‘pods’ which are home to a variety of small creative businesses. These are worth a mooch for some pocket-money spending or seaside and artisan mementoes. STROLL AND SAIL >> Beaches galore and fabulous walks along the coast with the majestic Warkworth Castle in one direction or Druridge Bay in another. But Amble is famous for its puffins too (the Puffin Festival happens every year). From the harbour at Amble you can get a boat out to Coquet Island to see the puffins. The island is a mile out at sea and was the site of a Benedictine monastery in Anglo-Saxon times. The place where Elfleda, the abbess of Whitby and sister of the King of Northumbria, persuaded St Cuthbert to become a Bishop. Coquet Island is protected as a nature reserve for sea birds. Its main residents are rabbits, gulls, puffins and eider duck. You can also take a rowing boat along the river to Warkworth. Little ones will love rock-pooling on the ‘jumpy shore’ which is the other side of the breakwater/pier from the Little Shore. Collect periwinkles, mussels and shells.
House, which was exactly as the name says, a former boat house, by the water’s edge. Delicious seafood dishes from an open kitchen – including daily specials depending on what’s landed that day. By its side is the cute Fish Shack offering fish and chips, a pint and seafood snacking by the harbourside. Or head to The Sand Bar for a good breakfast or brunch.

my local Julie Ringland is managing director of holiday rental business, Coquet Cottages. She lives in Warkworth. Three good things about living here >> • Warkworth is unspoilt and steeped in history. One of my favourite things to do is get up before sunrise with our gorgeous Great Dane, Gracie and take her to the beach, a five-minute walk from our house. It is so peaceful at that time in the morning. The river is blissfully still and if you’re lucky you can sometimes spot deer by the river. At the beach I could sit for hours, watching the sunrise and the waves. • I love how dog friendly the area is. Not only does the vast sandy beach have no restrictions for dogs, all four village pubs welcome dogs too. • Warkworth Castle still takes my breath away each time I see it. It sits proudly at the top of the village and I have a perfect view of it from the office, which proves to be surprisingly calming on busy days! Three places to take visitors • Warkworth is a well-known hub for tourists and is widely known as being the prettiest village in Northumberland. We can stroll down to Amble and the harbour or nip up to Alnmouth beach for a change of scenery. At the riverbank you can feed the ducks, hire little rowing boats and explore the Hermitage (which is only accessible by boat). • On a Sunday we head to the dog-friendly boutique café, Bertrams in Warkworth Village with a sun terrace open in summer and wood-burning stoves in the winter. • Bamburgh Castle. Everything about this day trip out is great, from the scenic coastal route to the breath-taking awe as you approach the castle. An ‘in the know’ secret One of Northumberland’s best kept secrets is the surf community. There is a ‘secret’ beach on Northside in Amble where, on summer’s day, you will often find the locals jumping into the harbour with their boards and paddling too. If you’re not feeling brave enough to jump in, Northside surf school has exclusive rights to the gravel road leading to the beach. They run lessons on the beach where you can arrange either a group lesson, or one-to-one classes. Even if you don’t want to get in the water it is mesmerising watching the surfers. Take a picnic down to the beach and sink your toes into the sand – just make sure the tide is right out!

Heaps of potential Rochell House is a huge property packed with period features. The sevenbedroomed house has been a care home and now needs a bit of TLC itself. PROPERTY WATCH WITH DUNCAN YOUNG
NEW HOMES PROVIDES MUCH NEEDED SUPPLY TO THE MARKET Here at Sanderson Young we have been working over the last three years to support a number of our new homes’ clients who are now actively bringing their sites to the sales market. Without these sites the second-hand homes market continues to remain very poorly supported, and in certain places, quite desperate for new stock. This has led estate agents to fight and bicker over new instructions, often undercutting fees or over promising on valuations which, in many cases, leads to a poorer service and a longer sale. It is important, when considering the sale of any property, to ensure that the estate agent guiding you has given accurate comparable data about what has actually sold, and that they are not being over ambitious regarding the values you may reach. The relief for a lot of this problem with supply is being provided by new homes stock and here at Sanderson Young we have 18 active sites for developers, a tremendous improvement on where we were this time last year. From those sites we have 154 new homes available for sale and this has given a great boost to supply of stock. One of our most exciting and popular residential sites at this current time is the redevelopment of the former Smith’s Dock in North Shields, a joint development owned by Places for People and being developed out by Urban Splash, one of the country’s finest urban regeneration builders and developers, headed by Tom Bloxham MBE, a well-known and respected developer throughout the country for creating magnificent homes from former brownfield sites. Sanderson Young’s marketing suite was opened on site just over a year ago and initially we were limited as to what was available for sale, but now we are in full swing with the creation of 34 magnificent houses on The Plateau and 80 new apartments within two brand new buildings known as the Smokehouses. I am delighted to report that 26 of the town houses, out of the 34, have been sold or reserved, and in the Smokehouses, 28 of the apartments have been reserved and are waiting to be occupied from early November this year. This level of confidence is a prime indicator of how demand is outstripping supply, given that we have no show apartment available for the new flats until November when we will be on site within the Smokehouses themselves. As a contrast, we recently completed 9 new homes at Brunton Square in Gosforth where large, stone built, five bedroom luxury, family homes were built by Countylife. They are now offering two luxury mansions in Newton, for sale at guide prices of £1.175 million and £1.15 million, in a fabulous location close to the prime areas of the Tyne Valley including ever fashionable Corbridge. We also have some fabulous new homes for sale in Stannington, from bungalows to family homes, and magnificent family houses in Lesbury and Warkworth where Lindisfarne Homes are creating two highly sought after locations within these beautiful villages. In Ponteland, the redevelopment of the former library site in the heart of the village is soon to create a mix of superb one and two bedroom apartments within Hemingway Court. We also have a luxury farm conversion in Earsdon, near the coast, of 6 magnificent stone farm buildings, and in Wylam a former care home is being converted to create 15 apartments within a period building and with fabulous grounds, close to the village centre. New homes are the lifeblood of the housing market and it is essential that we continue to look forward to increasing demand to meet supply. 2019 will see another 10 new sites being launched by the company and a further contrast of living standards within the region. If you are interested in living in a new home in the future, please contact us and let us know if we can assist you. The housing market continues to remain relatively strong and we look forward to transacting many more deals in the near future.

The football season is well underway, the kids have returned to school and that summer feeling is slowly escaping us. With autumn/winter about to hit, here are some cold-weather clothing recommendations and toilet bag essentials for the coming months… LAYER UP >>
IN THE BAG >>
The last few years have seen Canada Goose and Moncler monopolise the high-end jacket market.
It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been out of school, there’s something about September that rings the changes. Out with the old and in with the new. And as the seasons change, it’s always good to mix things up when it comes to the products we use.
When you’re looking for something that isn’t necessarily designed to combat below freezing temperatures, there are still plenty of stylish options to choose from…
Here are three must-have men’s toilet bag essentials for autumn/winter…

MARK LEE Mark Lee, 42, is originally from Darlington, but now lives in the North Pennines near Derwent Reservoir with wife Lindsey, two dogs and four horses. He work from home running the family property business CHILDHOOD CAR CRUSH >> My dad always had Jags as far back as I can remember, and when I was young I always wanted one.
SEP/OCT18
WHAT’S IN THE GARAGE NOW >> Daily drive is a 1995 Land Rover Defender 90 300TDi and the weekend toy is a 2000 TVR Chimaera 450 IF YOU COULD OWN ANY CAR >> Probably a TVR Tuscan 2S or Porsche 911. CAPTAIN SLOW OR JEREMY? >> In the Land Rover it is Captain Slow, but in the TVR it is most definitely Jeremy! WHO SHOULD PRESENT TOP GEAR? >> I think Chris Harris is doing a great job himself. TRACKS OF YOUR TYRES >> I was brought up on MeatLoaf in the car, but anything with a rock or blues vibe is fine - no modern pop though! DREAM ROAD TRIP >> Through France to the south coast via the Millau Viaduct and then into Italy, working our way up to the Italian lakes
and then heading back home over the Alps. WHO WITH >> My wife Lindsey of course! MEMORABLE CAR MOMENTS >> Picking up my TVR. WHAT’S IN THE GLOVE BOX? >> TVR - owner’s manual. Land Rover - all sorts of junk! HOW CLEAN IS YOUR CAR >> Not very - I’m not that into polishing any more. SCARY MOMENTS? >> Driving home having first picked up the TVR for the first time and flooring the throttle in cold, damp conditions. How I kept it in anything near a straight line was a miracle. I was a bit more circumspect for a while until I got used to the light weight and power.

RUGGED CHARM
S tyli sh, s a fe , s a ssy Volvo’s savvy new XC40 brings some good looks and personality to the SUV party, says Bob Arora
Anyone who reads this column will know I really do like Volvos. Having had the privilege of meeting the designers, it’s really interesting to get their thoughts on design and how they envisage the brand moving. I’m sure most people know Volvo is renowned for safety; the company has invested heavily in this and the next big push is towards autonomous driving. These safety features are really handy, but as I explained in my Porsche Cayenne review last month, these amazing systems can be fooled. One feature that is really handy, is the automatic braking. It’s so easy to be distracted when driving and as most crashes happen at low speeds, this feature is great, and it should help in reducing insurance premiums. In recent years, Volvo, has been really successfully selling the brand’s two SUVs, and with seemingly insatiable love for SUVs it makes sense for Volvo to introduce a smaller one and aimed at a bigger target market. I was lucky enough to be invited to the launch of the XC40, but before I even got
the chance to drive the car, it was obvious just what a great job the designers had done. It’s not just a smaller version of the hugely successful XC60 but a brand new car in its own right. It’s easy to see the brand identity with the headlights and the brake lights, but aside from that, the designers have come up with something special. I loved the different coloured roof and pillars - the dark red car at the launch, with the black roof, pillars and huge wheels really looked the business. Entry XC40s have manual gearboxes and are front wheel drive. The XC40 is priced from £27,610 - £40,070 and it’s available with either 3-petrol or 2-diesel engines. I personally believe that the pick of the bunch is going to be the D4, which comes with four-wheel drive and an automatic gearbox. The D4 has a top speed of 133mph and it gets to 62mph in 7.9 seconds but the best bit is the car’s economy, which comes in at 56mpg. The engine is a bit noisy at tick-over and it also sounds quite harsh under acceleration. If you opt for the big wheels, you’ll definitely hear a bit of road noise, but for me, the look of the wheels way outweighs any noise! I personally love the R-Design models, the
sporty body kit and big wheels along with the different coloured roof just make this car the pick of the range for me. All cars come with satellite navigation, climate control, LED headlights, auto-braking and rear parking sensors as standard, but you can opt for the optional cameras. The seating position is really high, so forward visibility is excellent and the seats are really comfortable, so long journeys won’t be an issue at all. The dash is dominated by a touch screen that controls everything, from the satellite navigation to the heating controls. The speedo and rev counter are digital, the dials great quality - it’s not quite the quality of the Mercedes S Class but that’s three times more expensive! There is loads of storage in this car and Volvo has moved the speakers to the top of the door, which leaves plenty of room for storage at the bottom. The optional Harmon Kardon speakers are amazing, the main one being behind the dash. The materials are really good quality and very soft to touch. The pan roof is another great feature that makes the car very light and airy indeed. There is plenty of room in the rear for passengers and the boot is a
decent size, it holds 460 litres of luggage, and there is a clever divider that also acts as a bag holder. This is great, as it stops bags flying around the boot when, if like me, you can have a bit of a lead foot! It also has no load lip, so putting anything into the boot is really easy and you shouldn’t scratch the bumper, which can sometimes happen. The car rolls a bit on corners, but that’s to be expected from a SUV. There are air bags all over the car, so I’m sure it’ll get a really good NCAP crash rating. One feature I loved was the pilot assist. This keeps the car in between lanes which was really handy on the motorway. The clever feature monitors the car if you are drifting out of your lane, and it corrects you automatically. The radar cruise control is another great feature - it slows and accelerates the car according to the traffic. The main rivals for this car are the BMW X1, VW Tiguan and the Jaguar E Pace, but I’d buy the Volvo all day long. It’s the best looking car in its class, I would choose the R-Design, with big wheels and an impressive contrasting roof! Car supplied by Mill Volvo Newcastle.
It’s not just a smaller version of the hugely successful XC60 but a brand new car in its own right
