ADVERTORIAL
Holiday the smart way Some of our most cherished childhood memories are of going on holiday. A time to explore, relax and spend quality time with family. If you are planning an autumn/winter holiday with your children, there are a number of legal matters you need to be aware of. First of all, children cannot generally be taken out of school during term-time. Schools used to have the discretion to allow up to 10 days term-time holiday each year in “special circumstances”. However, the rules were tightened in September 2013 which means head teachers can only now give permission for term-time absences in “exceptional circumstances”. The Supreme Court was asked to consider the new regulations in 2017, and the court emphatically confirmed the law that children must not be taken out of school unless there are “exceptional circumstances”. If you take your child out of school in term-time without the head teacher’s permission, then you face a fine of £60 per child (the Local Education Authority can levy this against each parent – so you could face a possible fine of £120). Last year the number of fines issued to parents in England for unauthorised
holiday absences increased by 93%. If you are planning on taking your child outside of England and Wales, you must obtain the consent of all those with ‘parental responsibility’. For most children those with ‘parental responsibility’ are their parents; however, others may also have ‘parental responsibility’ for a child if the parents have agreed to grant it to someone else or if the court has previously made orders in respect of that child. This means you may also need the consent of stepparents, uncles/aunts or grandparents. If you take your child outside of England and Wales without the consent of all those with ‘parental responsibility’ then you will be committing a criminal offence. If you are separated from your child’s mother/father, then my advice is to give as much notice as possible to the other parent of any proposed holiday. It is reasonable to provide details of the dates you will be travelling, information as to how you will be travelling (including flight/ferry details), an address for where you will be staying as well as an emergency contact number when you are away. If permission is given, then it is sensible to record this in writing. You may be questioned at the airport as to whether the other parent has given consent for you to take your child outside the jurisdiction.
To avoid delay or pre-holiday stress, I suggest you take evidence of the other parent’s consent with you to the airport. A solicitor can prepare a document evidencing this consent. Even if you are not separated you may still encounter difficulties at the airport if your child has a different surname to you, or if you are travelling without the child’s parents (for example, you are a grandparent). If the other parent will not consent to you taking your child abroad then you would need to apply to the Family Court for a Specific Issue Order. You would be asking a Judge to give you permission to take your child outside the jurisdiction (if a Judge gives you permission to go you will not be committing a criminal offence by taking your child outside the jurisdiction). An application to court for a Specific Issue Order can be made on an urgent, emergency basis, however, it is much better to plan and not leave it until the last minute. The last thing you want before going on holiday is a trip to court. If you are planning on taking your child on holiday, then it is important you seek legal advice at an early stage. I am a children law specialist at Major Family Law and would be happy to provide you with some initial advice in a no obligation free consultation.

Social Media is now more prominent in our lives than ever before, but it can bite back. Tilly Bailey & Irvine’s Private Family Law team explain how it affects divorce cases in the modern world... Social media undeniably plays a huge part in our lives and some would say an obsessive part of our day to day lives. New YouGov Omnibus data shows that one in five (20%) people in relationships think that their partner doesn’t pay enough attention to them. Social media is cited as the number one distraction. 28% of those feel neglected, saying that their loved one are checking their phones instead of spending quality time with them. Currently an increasingly number of divorces are based upon “unreasonable behaviour.” Marriages fall hazard to sometimes illicit behaviour by one party and at times social media platforms can make it more accessible, such as through dating apps. What you SHOULD do... We suggest that you avoid sharing details of your divorce/finances and children matters. This is a sensitive matter and one which can often only lead to more harm than good when dirty laundry is aired over social. Keep these private. Similarly, avoid bashing your ex in online forums. This will equally only aggravate the situation, which in turn could prove more expensive than the divorce being dealt with on an amicable basis. Be wary of... Social media may be a way that the other party may obtain information that you may not want them to find out. Some secret relationships are no longer
secret when social media becomes involved, and instead it can be shown as evidence of who a person shares time with, as well as their actions. You do not know who is reporting back with evidence. Your ex may not have an account with Facebook, but their friends may, and they could be reporting back to those involved. Your posts may reflect your parenting and could even have an impact on your children. How many family and friends have fallen out due to something that has been posted on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram for example? Sites such as Linkedin may also be used in cases with regard to child support, while social posts can also be used to demonstrate spending of income, such as bragging about a new flash car or piece of jewellery they’ve acquired. GOOD STUFF
Sweet charity Doing good things in the North East, our charity round-up... round-up DINE LIKE A DIVA >> The Divas and Diamonds charity ball returns to Hilton Newcastle Gateshead on Saturday 16th November 2019 for another night of glitz and glamour. The money raised will be donated to the Graham Wylie Foundation, which aims to help, inspire and educate children across the region. Prepare for a night as elegant as ever, kicking off with a luxurious red carpet entrance and a sparkling drinks reception. Complete with raffles, online auctions and fabulous entertainment, the eighth Divas and Diamonds Ball is sure to be an unforgettable night. If you can’t make it, you can still get involved in the online auction at Jumblebee, which remains ever-popular with bidders of previous years even winning a day on a private yacht. This fabulous, fun-filled evening is an amazing way to raise money for an excellent, local cause. jumblebee.co.uk
HEARTS OF GOLD >> Over 400 children and their families attended Close House for a one-mile toddle to raise over £15,000 for the Children’s Heart Unit Fund (CHUF). The main aim of the event was to help CHUF with their mission to improve the lives of children and young people who are born with or have developed heart conditions. Sponsored by the Graham Wylie Foundation, the fundraising day was abundant with clown doctors and over 60 volunteers dressed in convincing characters costumes. Once the kids crossed the finish line, they could then enjoy the rest of the day at the family funfair at Close House. The money raised will be valuable in helping to provide equipment, facilities, aftercare, salaries and research. chuf.org.uk
TEAM TOKYO >> Olympic triple jump champion and world record holder, Jonathan Edwards CBE has backed North East charity, Sport Newcastle in its bid to raise £20,000 over the next 12 months to support the region’s top young Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls in their quest to reach the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. The Tokyo & Beyond Appeal encourages local businesses and members of the public to support the region’s budding athletes, including swimmer Emily Large and archer Alex Wise. sportnewcastle.org
THE GIFT OF LIFE >> From 17 to 24 August, over 3,000 people from 59 countries came together to celebrate sport and raise awareness about the importance of organ donation through a mix of fundraising and sports at the World Transplant Games 2019. This year, the Games were hosted here in the North East. The main aim of the Games was to promote the benefits of organ donations in the hope of encouraging more people to sign the Organ Donor Register. The NewcastleGateshead event saw athletes travel from across the globe to participate, with some countries joining in for the first time (Kenya, Mongolia, Azerbaijan, Ethiopia and Nepal). Around 330 transplant athletes represented Great Britain and Northern Ireland in August - all of them were given a second chance at life after surviving heart, lung, pancreas, liver, small bowel or bone marrow transplants. Graham Wylie, chair of the World Transplant Games NewcastleGateshead said: “The World Transplant Games athletes are a true inspiration and we were honoured to welcome such an inspiring celebration of human coverage and physical fitness to the region.” Sports at the Games included archery, cycling, basketball, darts, football, golf, tenpin bowling and more. The World Transplant Games can be credited as being a stepping stone towards a miraculous move in organ donation. Huge congratulations to everyone involved! worldtransplantgames.org
STRICTLY FUNDRAISER >> This year’s North East Ladies Day luncheon will be hosted by BBC Strictly Come Dancing Star, Ian Waite. Ian, one of the original professional dancers on the show, will speak about his career and will even give some behind-the-scenes secrets from his days on Strictly Come Dancing. Your £48 ticket includes a three-course lunch and an opportunity to purchase things from the variety of stalls. This event will take place at Hardwick Hall Hotel on Tuesday 24 September 2019. All the money raised will go to the North East Ladies Day charity. northeastladiesday.co.uk
DRIVING FORCE >> Richard Smith, founder of autism charity, Awesometistic, is now the proud owner of a head turning, bright yellow Ford Mustang, to help him spread the word to children across the North East. With support from Lookers Ford Gateshead, they worked together to brand up the American car. Richard said: “The idea behind the Mustang was that it’s a very recognisable car, with the yellow model making it even more recognisable. Pulling up in a car like this helps the children to realise that just because someone has autism, it doesn’t mean they can’t enjoy the finer things in life.” lookers.co.uk

RACE AGAINST CANCER >> Rockliffe Hall’s Chief Executive, Eamonn Elliott, recently embarked on an Olympic triathlon at Castle Howard to raise money for the family of a colleague who passed away in March of this year. Eamonn worked with Laura Cafferty at two other hotels, most recently at The Grand Jersey Hotel where Laura was Spa Manager. In 2017, at the tender age of just 34, doctors found a cancerous tumour on Laura’s leg. She was later diagnosed with a rare form of cancer known as Leiomyosarcoma. She sadly passed away on 25th March 2019, leaving behind her husband Karl, and their 2-year-old daughter, Maya. It was then that Eamonn decided to set up a crowdfunding page for Karl and Maya to support them at this understandably difficult time. The triathlon involved a 1,500m swim in the Great Lake in front of Castle Howard, followed by a 45km cycle around the nearby Hovingham Estate and out into the Howardian Hills. The last stretch of the challenge was a 10km run taking in breathtaking landmarks and monuments, including Castle South Lake, The Atlas Fountain and Temple of the Four Winds. rockliffehall.com

ESTATE LIFE
A FA M I LY A F FA I R Elysia Agnew meets with the Milbank family, making a house a home on the Barningham Estate
Get lost on the country tracks, just off the A66 towards Barnard Castle, and you may stumble upon beautiful Barningham – a quaint conservation village at the foot of the moors. After tackling the Monday morning A1 rush, it’s a welcome retreat as I step into a world of stone-built cottages, glorious gardens and rolling countryside as far as the eye can see. I find myself relaxing into my seat as I wind through the country roads. As I’m meandering through the village, I notice the entrance to Barningham Estate on my right. Sitting at a height along a pristine drive is Barningham Park – a beautiful, Grade II* listed country house, dating back to the 15th century and set in 7,000 acres of countryside. It has been the home of the Milbank family since 1690; and today, I have the pleasure of meeting the family who have made the house a home - Sir Edward and Lady Natalie Milbank. It’s a family home among many other things. It’s a business, and will always remain a family business, but it’s important for each generation to really get to grips with life on the Estate. Sir Edward and Lady Natalie live at Barningham Park with their three children and labrador, Rocket. Today, it’s all hands

on deck as they prepare for a busy summer schedule – balancing family life with the running of the Estate. And with the re-opening of the much-loved Milbank Arms in the mix, there’s plenty to keep them busy. We’re here to talk all things Barningham – a day in the life of the Estate – but also, to explore the recently re-opened Milbank Arms, sitting in a quiet spot at the bottom of the Barningham Estate entrance – at the heart of the village. Loved amongst locals, it has been a treasured meeting point for many years – and, of course, an important part of the Milbank family since 1690. Retaining many of its original features, it enjoys a breathtaking location at the foot of the Yorkshire Dales and celebrates everything local, from the food and the real ales, to the decor and the staff. But before we get to see the Milbank makeover, it’s a pot of tea with Sir Edward and Lady Natalie in their home. Inside, the house nods to its history and heritage, but with a touch of contemporary design. It’s very much a running, family home. Wellies of all sizes are lined up at the door, a games room keeps the kids entertained and an Aga sits at the centre of the farmhouse kitchen. It’s everything you’d expect from a busy family home in the countryside, but with heaps of family history inside.
Iconic copies of Vogue line the drawing room table, while vintage tea sets are displayed in crooked cabinets. Loud, yellow sofas light up the room, while patterned chairs, passed down the family, take pride of place in the windows. There’s a real mix of old and new here, and it’s great to see the couple making their mark on a historical home. We settle down in the dining room; a large, banqueting table sitting at the centre – as you’d expect from an aristocratic family. Portraits and paintings adorn the walls and rich, traditional colours make up the decor. It’s timeless, it’s traditional – but it’s home. Over a pot of Yorkshire tea, Sir Edward and Lady Natalie tell me about their journey to Barningham. “I grew up on the Estate,” says Sir Edward. “So it really is home for me. I left for school and university – and then went on to work away, but returning to the Estate was always part of the plan, and I’m humbled to do so.” For Lady Natalie, it’s an adopted home – but one she feels incredibly passionate about and takes pride in running on a daily basis. “My mother is German and my father was in the military, so we’ve lived in lots of
interesting places including Hong Kong,” says Lady Natalie. “I attended boarding school in rural Wiltshire, based my career in London and then retreated to this beautiful part of the world,” she adds. “But before that, I escaped the big city to run an aid project in the wilderness in Africa, which was one of my favourite places to live, for sure. “I feel most at home when I’m surrounded by nature and animals – so Barningham Estate certainly feels like home for me.” Lady Natalie spent much of her career running reconstruction projects in postconflict war zones. Barningham Estate is a blissful comparison, and somewhere the couple, along with their three young children, dog and their wider family of staff and animals, are delighted to call home. After meeting through mutual friends in the Swiss Alps, the pair moved to the Estate nine years ago, with a transition period with Sir Edward’s parents. “We’ve undergone some renovations since taking on the Estate,” says Lady Natalie. “We renovated the back of the house,

ESTATE LIFE where we used to have all of the shoot lunches – so as you can imagine, it’s quite a fun and social entertaining space. “Because the house isn’t commercial, we focused on fixing the other buildings/ properties on the Estate first – and ours was slightly neglected to be honest. “But each generation has to save a bit of the house, and so we used Estate materials and local workers to help us make some improvements to keep the house in shape. “It’s interesting actually; we took up the floorboards and found stone flags and the remains of an old castle in the middle of the house. “It’s quite fun – we found old castle windows and lots of interesting things – wrapped around each successive generation. “This was Lord Thor’s house – once a Viking home. York University did a thesis on it – and did a model of the different successive layers of renovation over the years. It was really interesting.” For Sir Edward and Lady Natalie, it’s important to continue making improvements to the house, without losing its charm and its family heritage. “Maintaining the house is a big project in itself. When it rains, there are a lot of pots around,” Lady Natalie laughs. “But that’s just the nature of an old house. Hopefully we’ve done our bit for our generation, and then our son will be able to do his bit, when the time is right. Each Milbank will take on their own project on the Estate, and I think that is really great for progression.” Next in line to take on the Estate will be the couple’s first-born son. “He knows how it all works and that he’s next up,” says Lady Natalie. “I think it’s really important to be upfront
about it from the start. That’s how it has always managed to be an uninterrupted line, which is rare and really lovely – and that’s how it’s managed to remain sustainable. “I think, once you start to break things up, then it doesn’t support itself and it falls apart – and then it’s gone forever. “We have something really special here, and we’re going to hold on to it with everything we have.” The Milbanks really have made a house a home. And the Barningham Estate is not just their home – they share it with local farmers, animals, workers and the village community as a whole. And that is really important to them. “For us, the local community is key,” says Sir Edward. “We work closely with village residents to ensure everything we do works within the local environment,” he adds. “It’s important for us to move with the times, for us to grow and develop – but for us to ensure the village and the surrounding area doesn’t lose its charm.” And, alongside the running of the Estate, The Milbank Arms was a huge factor in getting the local community involved, ensuring it’s a place for everyone to enjoy. “Pubs are shutting down at an alarming rate,” says Lady Natalie. “Particularly in rural areas. And it’s our job to fight to keep the village community alive,” she adds. “Our village has several community hubs including the village church, the village hall, and of course, the pub – all of which complement each other nicely. “The Milbank Arms is part of a 100-year plan for us. It’s not a money-making business. It’s what is right for the village and for the local community. >>

ESTATE LIFE
“So with that in mind, we’ve injected a bit of contemporary design into the building, but it has very much remained a traditional, country pub – with plenty of local influence in everything from the food to the look.” Stepping inside The Milbank Arms is like stepping back in time – but with a bizarre sense of familiarity. It’s strange, because it’s like something I’ve never experienced before, but, even first thing on a morning without a customer in sight, there’s something oh-so calming about the place. Stick me in front of that fire with a glass of red and I’m in for the day. It’s a place you could easily while away the hours on a drizzly afternoon. A place you can pop in with your pooch. A place you can hide away in the snug with a group of friends and a bottle of the good stuff. It’s very traditional, but its facelift really has brought new life into the place. Mustard walls, splashes of deep red throughout, copper tones, Milbank paintings – it has a sense of place, but a sense of style too. The pub’s former landlord, Neil Turner, who retired last year after decades in charge, served the first drink at the new-look Milbank Arms at its opening in the summer, and it has since been a hit with both locals and foodies travelling from afar. The Milbank Arms was offered a grant through the RDPE (the Rural Development Programme for England) – investing in local areas – to help with 40% of the build and structural improvements. “For us, it was the perfect opportunity to breathe new life into our main community hub, and as far as we are aware, it has been greatly received,” says Sir Edward. “We will continue to help deliver and organise community events and activities for locals and for people visiting Barningham,” adds Lady Natalie. “We’re approaching game season on the Estate – so we have farmers working together to help feed into the kitchens and the local community. Harvest is a very exciting time here in the countryside.
24 luxe-magazine.co.uk
“Christmas is also a lovely time in Barningham. It’s a great time for families to come together in the community. We’re hoping The Milbank Arms will remain a meeting point over the holidays. I’m sure there will be plenty going on.” When they’re not taking on new projects or running day-to-day life on the Estate, the Milbank family like to explore the local area. “We’re a very outdoorsy family,” says Lady Natalie. “Our little girl loves horse riding. We do a bit of fell running too. I love my running – getting out in the countryside and letting off some steam,” she adds. “We love to have picnics up on the moors. We’re very lucky to be in a place where we can do that.” “We love to visit places like Fountains Abbey,” adds Sir Edward. “And places nearby like Raby Castle and The Auckland Project. There are lots of exciting things going on in this area, and it’s important we all support each other along the way.” “The children all enjoy being outside – making the most of our amazing surroundings - and they also like to stay home and play instruments, keeping us busy with lots of new hobbies. All three children play the piano and one of our boys would love to start playing the bagpipes. “So yes, it keeps us busy,” she laughs. “Out of term-time, we like to escape to the Alps – for skiing holidays and in the summer too. “We’re very lucky to have friends scattered across the world – Europe, Africa, Asia and so on… so we try to explore as much as we can, but coming home to Barningham is always a pleasure. “It’s a huge part of our family, it will always be a part of us and we’re very passionate about ensuring it stays that way.” themilbankarms.com Instagram: @the.milbank.arms

LUXE LIFE
EMMA G AU D E R N Emma Gaudern, 43, is a solicitor and managing director of EMG Solicitors based in Durham. Originally from Manchester, she set up home in the North East in 2010 to live with her now husband, Phil. Emma is on the fundraising board for Lumiere 2019, she’s a non-executive director of North East Chamber of Commerce, and she’s also on the Board of Theatre Hullaballoo based in Darlington. She has two young children aged 5 and 7 and an active Weimaraner who keeps her busy. Emma enjoys exploring the great outdoors with her family and dog, and keeping her garden and veg patch in shape. LUXE PEOPLE >> My husband Phil, my children, my parents (Alan and Ange) and in-laws (Ros and Phil). My fabulous dog walkers Michaela and Arron, who treat my dog as their own and love him as much as I do. And of course my handsome Weimaraner Django, who loves me unconditionally and wags his tail in circles whenever he sees me. LUXE PLACES >> For a weekend > London. So much to do and see. I just love wandering the streets. My husband and I plan to move there when the kids leave home, at least for a few years until we get sick of the bright lights. A long weekend > I’m lucky enough to be able to get to Majorca quite often, as my parents have a place in Puerto Pollenca. We build sandcastles on the beach and cycle to the old town for a vanilla slice - for an easy family break away, you really can’t beat it. LUXE RELAX >> Favourite food > Halloumi and avocado. I love to cook - particularly Middle Eastern food at the moment - but when I’m eating on my own, my go-to is avocado and mayo on a buttered onion bagel. I can easily eat this four or five nights on the bounce if Phil is away at a car show. Best restaurant > The Man Behind the Curtain in Leeds. We ate there the eve of my 40th birthday and it was the best meal I have ever had. I am booked to go back this year for my 44th! Perfect weekend > We stayed in Paris for a couple of nights after going to Disneyland Paris last year and it was just brilliant. We found the Luxembourg Park and spent the day there sailing toy boats in the pond and letting the children play. Downtime means > Walking my dog and ferrying the kids about. They are quite young, which means we have lots of birthday parties to attend, along with the usual array of after school clubs and activities. Family time would be going on a bike ride and ‘me time’ is just sitting with a book. Best telly > Grey’s Anatomy is a guilty pleasure. The Wire was brilliant too. Best book > Oscar and Lucinda by Peter Carey is lovely. I read it years ago but probably need to re-read it some time. The Whisperer by Donato Carrisi was gripping – possibly my favourite crime novel of all time. Best sounds > Well, as I type this I am on my way to London to see Lenny Kravitz, so he would be high up on my list. These days a lot of what I listen to is governed by the kids in the car which means it is things like Ed Sheeran and George Ezra. LUXE SHOP >> Best shopping city > London, although I also love my home city of Manchester for shopping too. Favourite shop > I enjoy food shopping these days and Wholefoods in Kensington is just brilliant. Luxe retail treat > I have decided to embrace my need for specs these days, so I am developing quite a collection of glasses and sunglasses. Specstacular in Shoreditch and Bespoke Eyewear in Harrogate are my favourite shops. LUXE PARTY >> Perfect party > We organise and sponsor the annual WonderLAN Ball in aid of Headway. It’s not a party as such, but it’s such a nice feeling to host a brilliant night in aid of such a good cause. Best dress > I have a 60s style Moschino dress which is very short, in black with a gold trim. I have had it for about 12 years and still feel fab every time I put it on with a pair of super high heels. Dinner date > Obviously my husband. YOUR LUXE THINGS IN LIFE >> Paperback novels, recipe books, high heels and flip flops, and my laptop, so I can work anywhere, any time. emgsolicitors.com

SHINE BRIGHT

Celebrating our 60th edition seems like the perfect opportunity to discover a little more about diamonds - the ultimate “luxe” gemstone. Jewellery designer, gemologist and diamond expert, Marianne Pughe, from Saunders and Pughe Goldsmiths in Corbridge, gives us a lesson in dazzling diamonds
THE SCIENCE >> Diamonds are composed of pure carbon, which has been crystalized in the cubic crystal system. Less heat and pressure can cause carbon to crystalize in the hexagonal crystal system resulting in graphite. DIAMONDS ARE VERY, VERY OLD >> The age of a diamond is found by studying the inclusions which are found within. These are tiny impurities which can give lots of information about where the diamonds have come from and how long ago they formed. The oldest known diamonds are 3,500 million years old, they formed within the earth’s fiery mantle long before the oxygen rich atmosphere which supports life had developed. HISTORY AND FOLKLORE >> The rare beauty and indestructible quality of diamonds has fascinated mankind throughout history. One of the earliest legends is of ‘The Valley of the Diamonds’, dating back to the 4th century. In a distant desert land there was a deep inaccessible valley, at the bottom of which lay an array
40 luxe-magazine.co.uk
of beautiful diamonds, guarded by deadly and ferocious serpents, the king of these lands would send his subjects on doomed attempts to retrieve the precious treasures but it always ended in death. The loyal subjects deduced a way to get the diamonds, to please their king, they flung chunks of meat into the ravine, eagles would dive down to grab the meat which the diamonds would stick to and the clever, king’s men climbed up to the eagle nests to retrieve the diamonds. Because of their purity and durability, diamonds have long been associated with protection and good fortune. There is one notable exception, the natural blue 45.52ct ‘Hope’ diamond which is said to be cursed and will bring grave misfortune to the wearer. It has passed through many hands in its tumultuous history, closely followed by death and tragedy. It now resides in the Smithsonian Museum in America where it can be viewed by the public.
chimneys, carrying the precious diamond crystals along with it. Sometimes these diamond bearing pipes are eroded by wind and water over thousands of years and the diamond crystals are carried far and wide, tumbling along in fast flowing rivers which in time dry up and are covered with sedimentary rocks where the diamonds lay buried until they are discovered. The earliest diamonds came from secondary sources in India, Borneo, Indonesia and Brazil. African diamonds were not discovered until 1867. ALL DIAMONDS ARE UNIQUE >> Although a rigorous system of grading is applied to diamonds to assess their value, no two diamonds are ever truly identical. Like snowflakes, each stone will have unique characteristics in the way the light reflects through and around the interior, splitting, flashing and dancing with spectral colours. THE FOUR CS >> Diamonds are graded by using a very specific scale often referred to as ‘The Four Cs’. Colour: The grade of colour, either the relative ‘whiteness’, or the rarity or desirability of fancy colours.
Clarity: Clarity or relative freedom from inclusions. Cut: The style and quality of cut. Carat weight: The weight of the stone. Anyone selling diamonds should be knowledgeable about the finer intricacies of ‘The Four Cs’. Saunders and Pughe takes great pride in giving the best of advice on diamonds, whether it be showing a customer a special selection of loose stones or re-setting an existing older piece. Designing is always sympathetic to the stone, to show it off in the most beautiful way. Marianne Saunders and Robert Pughe, along with their dedicated sales team, have been selling special diamond jewellery to the people of the Tyne Valley and beyond since they opened their shop in Corbridge in 2000. Marianne is a Fellow of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain with FGA and DGA qualifications and Robert is a fine jewellery goldsmith. Saunders and Pughe Goldsmiths are members of the Company of Master Jewellers and The National Association of Jewellers. saundersandspughe.com

LIVING IT UP
TREND WATCH
with Kate Rose, founder of lifestyle brand, Tutti&Co Chunky knits, beauty gifts and healthy, homecooked banana loaf... Wearing... After a summer full of family days out, short breaks away and juggling childcare in between days in the studio, I love to get back into a good routine once the kids go back to school. My summer wardrobe is packed away for next year and I like to plan for the autumn/winter months ahead. It’s my favourite time of the year…
Sample gift set, £25 lihabeauty.co.uk
I’ve bought a few new pieces of clothing this summer from the brand Free People, inspired by fashion, art, music and travel. I love the unusual designs; think hand-stitched seams, delicate lace inserts and vintageinspired details. All very affordable, too. I find the pieces can be dressed up and down, worn on holiday or layered for the cooler climate here in the UK. My most recent purchase is the C’est Moi Floral Kimono; a loose-fit, off-white and cranberry viscose kimono, with a floral and paisley print, with dropped shoulders, button-fastening cuffs and side splits. It looks stylish over a bikini for a late summer getaway, or fasten and wear a belt around the waist for a night out. You could also layer with a bodysuit and jeans for a dresseddown everyday outfit. Free People C’est Moi Floral Kimono, £150 from Harvey Nichols
Trying... A friend of mine recently introduced me to a new beauty brand – Liha Beauty. It has African roots and a quintessentially British attitude and was born of a desire to create innovative, natural, organic and vegan skincare products, blending the rich botanical life of west Africa with traditional English aromatherapy and folk remedies. All products are 100% vegan, cruelty-free and handmade in small batches in London. If you would you like to try a product or treat a friend, why not buy the sample gift set? It includes small samples of each product in a cotton bag, perfect for travelling and testing each of them before buying at full-size.
Eating... Both children take a packed lunch to school and I often struggle to find tasty healthy snacks they both enjoy, so I’ve spent a few hours over the summer trying new recipes. The kids have enjoyed baking and tasting and the favourite was a healthy banana loaf with a little warm chocolate spread. 5 ripe banana 1 cup of almonds 2 cups of pecans 1 cup of buckwheat flour 1/2 cup of maple syrup/agave nectar 3 tablespoons chia seeds 2 tablespoons of cinnamon Pre-heat the oven to 145C. Blend the almonds and pecans until they form a flour, then add the buckwheat flour, maple syrup, chia seeds and cinnamon, mixing throughly. Mash the bananas together until smooth, before stirring them into the mixture. Grease a loaf tin with coconut oil and pour in the mixture, then bake for an hour. When cool, remove from the tin, slice and spread with warm chocolate spread.
Listening to... I’ve decided to create a playlist of my favourite songs to share with you through Spotify. Taking inspiration from my travels over the summer, I’ve compiled a laidback, easy-listening playlist. Perfect background music. September Vibes by k8rose
Loving... I love a new season; there’s just something about autumn’s chunky knitwear, leather boots and accessories. My favourite pick this time of year is our organic square scarf, which is gorgeous in monochrome with a hint of cranberry for that perfect autumnal vibe. Tie loosely in your hair, around your neck with a fine knit, or on the handle of a leather bag for effortless style.
Building update...
New... Lobo Rojo opened on North Shields’ Fish Quay in August. It’s only a short stroll from the studio, so I thought it would be worth a try. It’s an informal and relaxed Mexican restaurant, serving street food-style bites, including tasty tacos and side dishes. Delicious. Search @loborojoquay on Facebook

Week 1 Once I arrived, I took a moment to appreciate the location. It’s idyllic; surrounded by dense, lush green forest, a wildlife sanctuary, tea estates and rubber plantations. There’s also a stunning aqua-green lake. I climbed the stairs to the ashram and immediately noticed the beautiful, well-kept grounds, with towering palms, alongside shrubs and plants, Indian jasmine bushes, giving off the most mesmerising scent. Our first dinner was at 6pm. It was my first experience of sitting cross-legged on a concrete floor with only a thin bamboo mat as a base. Dinner here is eaten in silence with no cutlery and the use of only your right hand (the left is used for cleaning and ablution duties in India). Eating by hand is said to pass the prana (energy) from the food to the body more directly. It also means you eat more mindfully, feeling the texture of the food before putting it in the mouth. On reflection, week one provided physical and mental challenges. I had discussions with two fellow Western course mates who were thinking of leaving because of the rigid, intense schedule. I knew the course wouldn’t be easy, but what I didn’t appreciate, or factor into the equation, was the intensity of the schedule and how having only five or six hours of sleep per night, only two meals a day and sitting on the floor all day, every day, for everything, would affect me. That said, it’s amazing how much the human body and the mind can adapt and adjust. After a few days, I found myself slowly acclimatising to the hot conditions, adjusting to having less sleep and was starting to enjoy my new routine. I was also enjoying the four hours of yoga per day and the philosophy and spirituality lectures. One of the lessons we are taught is that yoga isn’t just a series of physical poses and postures; it’s an entire philosophy, influencing every aspect of our life, from what we eat to how we behave.
Week 2
Lessons in bliss Jessica Laing chats to local lad, Joseph Marsh, who journeyed to India to fulfil his dream of taking a yoga teacher training course…
As he clicked the ‘submit’ button for the payment of his yoga teacher training course, Joseph realised that most of what remained of his modest redundancy payment was now spent. After working in marketing for over a decade - a career in which he was constantly pushing and improving himself he turned to yoga in a bid to find calm. He fell in love with yoga five years ago so much so, he even led a weekly yoga class for his co-workers. “Since starting my practice, I’ve become increasingly aware of the need to create time and space in the mind away from the busyness of the world we live in. Yoga creates a balance and the ability to rest and

recharge from the stresses that work and everyday life have on the mind and body.” Inspired by his wife, Karen, a well-known yoga teacher in the North East, he soon set his sights on a 200-hour teacher training course in India - the home of yoga. “She’s an inspirational and truly gifted teacher - I wanted to follow in her footsteps,” says Joe. “The only thing standing in my way was my full-time employment. But when I was offered the option of voluntary redundancy, I took it as a sign. It felt like it was meant to be; it was my time to embark on a new journey of self-discovery and growth.” After a 10-day holiday in Goa with Karen, Joseph jetted off to The Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Dhanwantari Ashram, part of the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre
organisation, on India’s Malabar Coast. What began in 1977 as a mere collection of huts is now one of the world’s best-loved hotspots for yoga teacher training, set in 12 acres of tranquil, tropical splendour, in the quiet foothills of Kerala’s Western Ghats. It was also one of the first ashrams to offer yoga training to westerners. Joseph made the ashram his home for four weeks, sticking to a strict programme, which involved sleeping in a male-only dormitory, waking up at 5.20am every day, eating a ’sattvic’ diet (two vegetarian meals a day, void of onion, garlic, chilli or any other spice), ending each day with meditation and satsang (gathering or practicing together in a group) and not talking after 10pm. Here, he shares snippets from the diary he kept while undergoing his training…
A yoga practice highlight from week two was when we partnered with our neighbour for headstand preparation and adjustment instruction. As the days went on, I came to enjoy my daily yoga karma duties, which involved cleaning toilets, showers, sinks and mopping the floor. Sitting cross-legged on the floor all day, every day, is still proving a challenge though. But I’m adapting and can now sit unassisted for over 30 minutes. I’m also appreciating the food more. The view from the main yoga hall fills me with joy on a daily basis. When in downward dog, or headstand, I look through the arches behind me and marvel at the lush greenery, hills and glimpses of palms as far as the eye can see. We’ve been assigned groups, each one containing four people. Each student will be required to memorise and teach the other students the four versions of the Sivananda Beginners Classes over the next week. I’m looking forward to the challenge and also to start the anatomy lectures over the next six days.
Week 3 The intensity of the course and the teaching continues. A breakthrough moment in an afternoon yoga class was when I stayed in a headstand for approximately five minutes. My teaching of ‘beginners class three’ to my group is well-received and the feedback is good. I learn about ‘titiksha’, which means

endurance and the ability to keep going, despite challenges or hardship. It resonates deeply with me. Once a week there is a silent walk to go to a lake or mountain to meditate, witness the sunrise and to chant. This week’s is special; sitting facing a still lake, surrounded by natural beauty and watching the sun rise. With the heat, humidity and two meals per day, with not a lot of protein or fat, it’s inevitable that I’m losing weight - and I can feel it in places. But, during and after the daily yoga classes, I feel so strong. At the end of the week, we have a choice to take part in a mantra initiation, where you are given a mantra that can be used in meditation. I choose Ganesh, an elephant-headed Hindu deity who is the

remover of obstacles. I align with Ganesh, as whatever is put in front of me, I always resolve and overcome.
Week 4 The practical exam of the course arrives and I teach a full two-hour class, observed by a member of staff. It goes well and the students really enjoy it. At that moment, I recall one of Karen’s students saying that a yoga retreat that she went on with Karen was “life-changing”. What a joy and privilege to be able to make people feel that way. There is one final hurdle: a final three-hour written exam. We are given a study day beforehand to revise the entire course syllabus.
I enjoyed studying for and sitting the exam: it’s new knowledge. I pass and get a ‘very good’, which is the top category of scoring. I am now a 200-hour certified yoga instructor. I take a moment to realise that the ashram is such an idyllic, peaceful and blissful place. It's difficult to fully appreciate it when you’re immersed in the strict schedule. I leave with a feeling of inner peace. I’m blessed to have spent four weeks of my life in this amazing place.
Reflection… I did struggle in the first week as I was acclimatising to my surroundings. I soon realised, though, that the human body and mind are capable of far more than
we allow ourselves to believe. I am a firm believer that we should always strive to better ourselves and this growth often happens when we put ourselves in unfamiliar and difficult situations outside of our comfort zones. Even when things aren't easy, or not progressing as we expect them to, the intention is what drives us. And it was my intention to complete this course. In times of struggle or difficulty, there is always an easy option to give up, but if you don’t, if you choose to harness your drive and commitment instead, you realise you are capable of more than you think you are. KEEPING COOL
Culture... with added calm
Haven’t you heard? It’s now been proven that visiting museums has a positive impact on our health A report published by the Art Fund found that 42% of North East adults feel anxious at least some of the time - the largest proportion in the country after London at 45%. The report stated that “more than ever, people need places where they can relax, learn, contemplate and wander”. As a way to counteract these feelings of anxiety, those who had daily leisure activities reported greater life satisfaction and happiness. Those who visited museums and galleries reported up to 20% higher satisfaction-with-life scores than those who never visit them. Matt Hancock, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, highlighted recently that culture “can help keep us well, aid our recovery, and support longer lives better lived. It can help us meet major challenges facing health and social care – ageing, loneliness, mental health, and other long-term conditions”. Doctors in Canada are already prescribing free museum visits and recent surveys from both the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport and the Understanding Society indicate say that spending time in museums can provide a wealth of health benefits, including relaxation and recovery from work and a feeling of social connection and purpose. They also believe it can help tackle psychosis in young adults, postnatal depression, recovery from neurological damage and falls prevention in older people. Museums in Tyneside are embracing this research and Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums co-ordinated the first North East Creativity and Wellbeing Week in June of this year, including tours, health classes, music, art, poetry and more. It also marked the launch of Slow Museums, providing opportunities for people to visit museums and galleries with the knowledge that staff have been trained to support visitors with visible, invisible, intellectual or cognitive disabilities. Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums also deliver four programmes to help with deeper health and wellbeing in our region; supporting people with mental health issues, supporting people in recovery from addiction and justice recovery and a programme of activity with people aged over 55.

Generation We’re talking to people with a positive attitude to mid-life, doing things differently, changing their pace of life, their priorities, reflecting on what’s gone before and the new opportunities and challenges to come Jo Moffett is director of Leaf Training, offering forward-thinking solutions in employability skills, business training and quality assurance assessments. After 30 years in the NHS, Jo was ready to start up her own venture. Her sessions span across schools, hospitals, rural communities and both large and small business. She is well into her first year in business and is eager to expand and share her knowledge, helping to make people feel at ease - getting the best out of them at any age, whatever it is they do.
I used to do this...
I worked in the NHS from age 19 - 50, when I took early retirement to follow my dream of being my own ‘boss’ and forming my company ‘Leafftraining.co.uk’ (Leadership Engagement and Future Focus). Whilst I loved my job as part of the education and workforce team at the Newcastle NHS Foundation Trust, I felt something was missing and longed to be more in control, not just of my work life, but also my home life. I am sure many women of my age will agree that at times you feel like you are on a treadmill on speed nine - and need to slow it down a little. So I took the brave, crazy and very exciting decision to step away from job security and routine, and venture into my new world of spontaneity and challenge.
Now life is about… Primarily, me! For the first time in many years - if ever - I am putting my needs first and I think this is the joy of increasing age. You can become more attuned to what makes you happy. But whatever the reason, I am wallowing in this wonderful tub of feeling great, independent and just grabbing life and hugging every minute out of it. My new job is very much about encouraging everyone
SEP/OCT19
KEEPING COOL to be the best they can be. More importantly, not waiting until you are over a certain age to do or feel this great. With every session I design and deliver, my main aim is to ensure all attending go away with something to help them as individuals as well as their business. The benefits are: improved morale, positive thinking and a greater understanding of the importance of health and wellbeing in the workplace and at home.
The people who are important to me… My parents, who taught me values from the very start - treat others with respect and always look out for those in need.
Finding Space
Family is all about...
Being active. My husband is a keen cyclist and uses exercise to ‘unwind’. I always know if he’s having a tough time at work when he disappears for a 70-mile bike ride! My oldest girl Sophie, 13, is a keen horse rider and my youngest girl Maisie, is very like me - feisty, driven and a fabulous dancer. The one thing we do not have in common is her footballing ability. As a family, whenever we can, we escape to our happy place in Seahouses - my favourite place in the world. As we drive in and see the wonderful Bamburgh Castle, you can feel the worries of the week drift away.
I’m lucky I can... Take a step out of security and create this new business. This feels like a new start, a new beginning. And whilst, at times, my body is saying slow down, I refuse to give in and continue to push forward with new ideas, energy and a lust for life!
A day in the life of me...
Up at 6.30am to welcome husband and dog back from their walk, get three lunches ready, leave for school and then - if I survive the school run back home to check emails, create new sessions, squeeze in a run and check social media. If it’s a weekend, the main focus is dinner out – favourite hangouts being ARLO or Sale Pepe in Jesmond. As a runner, I love a quick five-miler around Jesmond whilst listening to my dance tunes and rocking a beat.
What mid-life means to me… Being able to take time to reflect on what I have achieved, spending more time with parents, and feeling confident in everything I do. Don’t allow your mental or physical energy to be wasted in the wrong situations or with the wrong people and grab each day with energy. Don’t live for Fridays, give a bit of love to a Monday! leafftraining.co.uk
I thrive on… Knowing I am loved, valued and safe.
ageless
I’ve always loved tea. Whether it’s my first cuppa in the morning, a pot shared with loved-ones, or the joy I take from sitting in silent meditation in Chadao ceremony, it is a huge part of my life The history behind tea is long and deep. Scientists hypothesise that Camelia Sinensis – the ‘tea tree’ – first originated in ancient China one million years ago. For thousands of years, we have recognised its power as a plant medicine, drinking it in many forms, in many ways, in all corners of the globe. It really is a universal connector, with a magical ability to deepen our relationship with ourselves, each other and the natural world around us. In its presence, we calm down, we speak our truth, we relate and we remember. Tea is a poignant reminder of how much the seemingly simple things in life can teach us. So, what wider life lessons can we take from our daily cuppa? Try the ‘house blend’… When someone goes to the trouble of making something in a certain way, give it a try. They’ve taken time to do this, spent energy on their creation; they’re proud of it and they’ve been generous enough to share. Respect this by paying attention and giving it a go. …but ask for it how you like it In life, like with our tea, we all have our preferred ways. This might be the way we like something, a need that we wish to be met, or a boundary that we don’t want others to cross. Not only is it ok for us to share this with others, it’s essential. When we communicate this, we help other people understand us more and we stand a better chance of getting what we want and need. Remember everyone likes it best their way Just as you like it your way, they like it theirs. You don’t have to like it, you don’t have to do anything about it, you just have to know it… and not try to change it. ‘Drink it’ with strangers In Pakistan, they say ‘the first time you share tea, you are a stranger. The second time you take tea, you are an honoured guest. The third time you share a cup of tea, you become family.’ We were all strangers once, so take the time to get to know people, and hear someone’s story. Be a considerate ‘maker’ Pay attention to the details that light someone up. Do it their way sometimes. Make them feel special whenever you can. Don’t rush - enjoy the moment If you’re drinking tea, drink tea. If you’re writing a letter, write a letter. If you’re dancing, dance. Be in the moment, soak it in, taste it, feel it, enjoy it. Time is now. There is much joy to be found in simplicity Life can get complicated and fancy. We often want more, but when we stop and reflect, we know it’s the simple things that matter. Added up, the ‘tiny happinesses’ we find in the day-to-day are what make a life filled with joy. Enjoy your next cup and take care for now, Laura

Steven Land of Novellus Aesthetics lifts the lid on the clinic’s new, fat-busting Desobody and Desoface treatments We’ve all been there; working hard all year long, trying to achieve our ideal bikini body in time for summer. Months of green shakes, spin classes and five litres of water a day, yet those little pockets of stubborn fat just will not budge. It seems, no matter how hard we work, those persistent areas don’t go anywhere fast. It isn’t all bad news, though. Let us introduce you to our latest injectable treatment - Desobody; the injection lipolysis for melting fat in the thighs, buttocks and tummy. This new, innovative treatment works by injecting the solution, which liquefies fat cells into fatty, stubborn areas such as the hips, abdomen and thighs, destroying them permanently. While this may sound like a complicated and painful procedure, we can assure you that it’s quite the opposite. The minimallyinvasive treatment takes around 30 minutes, with no down-time needed. And best of all, the results are permanent, given that you don’t gain any more weight. It’s not just for the body, too. Desoface is a lower concentration treatment for treating stubborn facial areas, including the chin and neck. This new procedure targets areas which are often resistant to diet and exercise and will be available at Novellus from September. With winter on the way and, dare we say it, Christmas in sight, the clinic is filling up fast with clients prepping for the party season. If you’d like to book an appointment, or find out more about injectable skin care, contact Doctor Steven Land now. Please note that this treatment is not a weight-loss solution or slimming aid. Desobody and Desoface best suit those who already have a medium body weight (BMI), who may be slightly overweight, or have localised fat deposits.

Ravishing retreat Jessica Laing escapes to Redworth Hall’s newly-restored spa for a glow-giving afternoon
If you haven’t already heard, Redworth Hall has opened the doors of its new spa and leisure club, following a fancy £2 million makeover. And I’m happy to report that it’s as lovely and as luxe as can be. Tucked away in 26 acres of peaceful woodland in Newton Aycliffe, the 17th century manor house is blessed with rustic good looks and olde-worlde-charm, but head to the recently-revamped spa - now known as The Retreat - and you’re transported straight to a glossy, relaxing, modern world. In it, you’ll discover six new treatment rooms, including one dual room, perfect for couples, and two inter-connecting rooms that suit groups of family and friends perfectly. There’s also a swanky new hair and nail salon, where you can treat your locks to a L’Oréal blow-dry and your talons to a relaxing Jessica mani/pedi, along with a sumptuous ‘tranquility room’, where you can kick-back and revel in post-treatment bliss. You’ll also find a new, fully-equipped gym, but I’ll admit that I stayed far away from it in favour of a facial and a delicious spot of lunch. I’m not sure I trust anyone who chooses trainers over fluffy flip-flops on a spa day, anyway. My spa buddy and I arrived at the four-star hideaway on a Sunday morning, with a day of calm before us.
SEP/OCT19
There are so many inviting spa day packages and breaks on offer here at The Retreat; some geared towards couples, others designed for friends, pregnant women and new yummy mummies, mothers and daughters/sons and individuals longing for some ‘me-time’. But ours was just the ticket: a luxury treatment each, made special using only the finest Decleor products, lunch for two and over six hours of relaxation time. After changing into our snow-white spa kit, twisting our hair into top-knots and turning our phones off, we were whisked away to our individual treatment rooms for 60 minutes of bliss. While my chum surrendered to a hot lava shell full body massage - a new spin on hot stones, designed to melt away tension in the deepest of muscles - I was treated to Decleor’s award-winning ‘Ultimate Vitamin Glow’ facial. Power-packed with vitamins and antioxidants to give glow, essential oils to rebalance and a mighty mask to clear out the pores, it’s an all-rounder for all skin types and concerns. My chops were cleansed, exfoliated, toned and moisturised using Decleor’s purifying range of products - perfect for my oily skin. Then, it was time for the therapist to paint my face - quite literally - with a superstrength decongesting mask. It’s applied all over the face, including the eyes and mouth, and left to work its magic for around 15 minutes, while you’re treated
to a heavenly scalp, neck and shoulder massage - which gently lulled me to sleep. Once removed with toasty mitts, which woke me up in the loveliest of ways, I was treated to a gentle pressure point facial massage, using Decleor’s renowned Aromessence Ylang Ylang Super Serum, soothing it into my skin. Before we settled down for lunch, my pal and I took some time out in the Tranquility Room - my favourite space in the new-andimproved spa. It’s dark and ambient, home to uber-comfy heated beds for you to sink into pre and post-treatment. The perfect place for some shut-eye or meditation. Lunch was healthy veggie wraps with salad and white chocolate cheesecake (because
life is all about balance), enjoyed over in The Lounge - a plush new hangout that’s been tastefully re-designed and styled as part of the spa’s makeover. We grabbed a quiet corner under one of the stunning blossom trees and relished every moment spent eating in our fluffy robes. I’m sure you’ll do the same. Home time soon came, but not before we enjoyed a dip in the indoor pool, jacuzzi, sauna and steam room to top off what was one of the most relaxing, glow-giving Sundays we’ve had in ages. Textured, sexy and fun, this iconic hairstyle has been worn by many over the years, but now it’s back with a cool, retro vibe, making it a favourite with the fashion-conscious. It’s a perfect look for those with naturally

EQUESTRIAN EXPERT
ON THE HOOF with Deborah Smith Summer was incredibly busy in the equestrian world; lots of training, plenty of events, overnight stays and even some rosettes GREAT YORKSHIRE SHOW >> First stop, the Great Yorkshire Show; one of the biggest agricultural events in the British calendar. Having missed the ladies sidesaddle class last year, I was determined to catch the action this year. It’s not something I’ve ever tried and I’m always full of admiration for the riders who make it look so effortless and elegant. This year’s sidesaddle class is a qualifier for the prestigious Horse of the Year Show, during the first week in October; and it is oh-so competitive! The entrants are initially judged in the Top Spec White Rose Arena before the finalists battle it out in the Main Arena for the final judging. A full gallop, past the grandstand packed with spectators, is the highlight of the class. The riders and horses were all amazing and the judges had a really tough job making their final selection. In the end, the Mears family’s prolific Brookdale Limited Edition, with Danielle Heath riding, took the ribbons and the hard-fought first place. I managed to catch up with Danielle after the show to find out a bit more about how she got into sidesaddle riding in the first place. When did you first start riding sidesaddle? I first started riding sidesaddle when I was 13. My pony was called Morning Melody and she was a dun 14hh mare and my first competition was the Royal Windsor Horse Show. I won! How did you get the ride on the fantastic Archie (Brookdale Limited Edition)? I now produce and ride for five different
52 luxe-magazine.co.uk
owners from all over the country. I found Archie at a local show and approached the owner a month later to see if she would sell him to the current owner. I took the ride straight away and our first show was Moreton-In-Marsh, where he won and gained his first HOYS ticket. I then took the sidesaddle ride on him this year where we won Royal Windsor, Yorkshire Sport Horse and the Great Yorkshire Show. The owner’s daughter took over the Maxi Cob classes on him this season. And what’s Archie like? He’s a real character and a gentleman in every way. He is an armchair ride - astride and sidesaddle. The famous gallop - what’s it like at the Great Yorkshire Show? The gallop in that ring is the main thing you look forward to and I made the most of it on this special horse because I knew he would cover the ground and love the atmosphere in there. And the rest of the season? My next show will be at the NEC Birmingham for the Horse of the Year Show. Any tips for anyone interested in having a go? If you want to learn sidesaddle get in touch with a professional for advice on your ride and the saddle. There are plenty of contact details on the Side Saddle Association website sidesaddleassocation.co.uk. Wishing Danielle and Archie all the best for October.
2019 BRITISH BREEDING BAILEYS HORSE FEEDS FUTURITY >> For a complete change, I headed to Richmond Equestrian Centre for the 2019 British Breeding Baileys Horse Feeds Futurity evaluations. I’m not in the market for a young horse; in fact I’m quite sure husband Dave has hidden the chequebook, but for anyone looking for a future performance horse, the Futurity offers a world-leading evaluation system. Futurity is a great showcase of British breeding and Richmond didn’t disappoint, with some stunning 2019 foals including Merikanto by Morricone; a superb foal owned and bred by Sally Banks L’Amie, who gained an elite grading with a score of 9.1. Sally is based in North Yorkshire and this is her first foray into horse breeding. What an amazing result!

SUCCESS STORY
A northern dynasty The Fenwick family tree is one of success, splendour and a whole load of style. It’s a story we’ve been longing to hear. Elysia Agnew catches up with author Christopher Fenwick over coffee at the flagship store in Newcastle
For me, it was important to tell our story – our story of great success. And to be able to do that up here in Newcastle, where it all began, is very special
SEP/OCT19
“How did this man born in Richmond, Swaledale, come to found a business in Newcastle and then go on to start a business in Bond Street?”, is the first question asked in Christopher Fenwick’s new book, ‘The Story of Fenwick and its Family’. Christopher Fenwick, 82, once Marketing and Development Director – and most famously, the brains behind Newcastle’s moving Christmas window – has been logging his family’s history for some years, and felt now is the time to tell the tale. The development of the business and the success of the Bond Street store took Christopher down south in 1965, but Newcastle and the North East will always have a place in his heart, as the home of Fenwick, the place where the family’s business has flourished, and the home of Newcastle United. Following the first game of the new season at St James’ Park, we’re catching up over coffee at Fenwick’s Tivoli restaurant. Set up for service with white tablecloths and crockery worthy of a quintessentially British tea party, I arrive to find Christopher sitting with a coffee by the window overlooking Blackett Street, Grey’s Monument and beyond – quietly reflecting on his latest project – telling the story of the much-loved family department store he calls home. “Very few books like this are published,” he tells me as my pot of peppermint tea is poured. “The trade is very interesting; there’s always a tale to tell. You become part of the community as a department store. We, really, are the longest running family store of prominence. We’re the fifth or sixth biggest group of department stores, because they’ve either closed down or amalgamated. “So, for me, it was important to tell our story – our story of great success. And to be able to do that up here in Newcastle, where it all began, is very special. “We published a book back in 1972, written by Reginald Pound, who also wrote the history of Selfridges. I assisted him with that, so I knew exactly where I wanted to go with it. “It’s a proper business history,” he tells me. “But I’ve given it a light, family touch, without being schmaltzy – I hope. That was the aim, anyway.” The book itself talks about the rise of the
Fenwick brand – and the family that have made the business tick. Its founder, Mr John James Fenwick (Jim to his friends and family), was a ladies’ tailor – specialising in giving good value for good things. “Which Fenwick, at its best, has always done,” says Christopher. “My great grandfather (Jim), did that – and he did it very well. But he always wanted to go to London, and so he found a site on Bond Street in 1891 and Fenwick flourished,” he smiles. But before we get into the history of the department store we all know and love, a bit about our author… “I started working for the family business when I was 15 – long before I’d left school. We lived up here in Jesmond,” he recalls. “The Newcastle store was very much a part of my childhood. Father would walk us down here when he had a bit of business to do and he would introduce us to all of the staff. We knew a lot of people and they all knew who we were. “We would go into the ticket room and write the tickets, because we used to paint all of the price tags back then. When we visited London, we would play buses with the coat rails,” he laughs. “It was a big part of our lives growing up. Our parents did very well having fun with us that way.” Christopher went on to become Marketing and Development Director at Fenwick, and very much a part of the company’s success and progression over the years. One of his greatest marketing masterpieces was the iconic moving Christmas window – a monumental part of the festive season up here in the North East. “We always reckoned to dominate Christmas in Newcastle, and then a furniture store called Callers introduced animated windows. “We had a wonderful display manager, Bill Cass, who had the idea of introducing music. He had done some marvellous window schemes for us, so we got talking and I said: ‘This year, we’ve got to beat Callers!’ – and so we went off to Paris the Christmas before, where we’d often meet to get ideas – and there it was, a moving Christmas window. “We came back and had the idea of doing Camberwick Green, then we went on to do Chigley, Rupert Meets Santa, Sooty’s Circus and so on. After that, we found somebody from Colchester who would do mobile >>

SUCCESS STORY windows for us in a story format, and we’ve done it ever since. “It’s absolutely huge now,” he smiles. As Christopher’s climbed the career ladder at Fenwick and the business continued to grow, demand was high in the south, and so he set up home near the big city. “I live in Pangbourne now,” says Christopher. “I’m a metropolitan guy. My brothers were up here and we were expanding down south, so there seemed to be opportunities down there for me. “Newcastle obstinately remained the same size as the London business. We had two great leaders in Richard Watts Jones at Bond Street and George Bell up here, and they helped us develop the stores very well indeed.” Fenwick is a business with family at its heart. And the Newcastle store is where the business found its feet. Very much the flagship store. “Fenwick is unique because of the mix of family, senior management and general staff – who don’t want to be entirely usual or orthodox – they want to do things in a particular way,” says Christopher. “Be ordinary, without being pretentious. If the ordinary way is the simplest way, then that’s the way to do it.” A great department store has got to work on comradeship and community, and after speaking with Christopher for some time, it seems that is what has held this business together for such a long time. What started as an independent tailor on a corner on Northumberland Street, has gone on to become one of the country’s most successful, family-run department stores – and for that, we give thanks to its founder. Jim’s story started, not in Newcastle, but in nearby Stockton-on-Tees, where he trained
for seven years as an apprenticeship tailor. On completion of his training, as quoted in the book, his master told him: “I am more than pleased with the ‘shapes’ you have made… but in common fairness, I feel I must tell you that you are wasting your time in a situation such as this. You have such a gift for the work, that you must seek out some position which will give you greater scope, perhaps in Newcastle.” Jim took his master’s advice, upping sticks to continue with his training in Newcastle at Bragg & Co – the great drapers of the age. In 1882, at the age of 36, he launched his own tailoring business on Northumberland Street, before opening in London – which was quite a thing for a lad from Swaledale. “He was a great family man. It was Jim who really made a family as well as a business,” says Christopher. “He had three sons. The third tragically died quite early in life in the 1930s, but his two sons, Fred and Arthur, carried on. Fred had two sons, who were Trevor and John – they were to be the next directors in the business. “Trevor then had my brother John, my brother Peter and myself. My father was a terrific fashion man. He had a wonderful sense of style. “‘Fashion should be as fresh as flowers’ – he used to say. “He expanded the businesses a lot. In five years, Bond Street multiplied its turnover by six. The business was, of course, set up by the founder and his sons, but beyond that, women’s tailoring lost its importance to ready-to-wear, and that’s where my father came in to his own. “Ready-to-wear was a huge business at that time. What encouraged it was the technology of making uniforms, because we were making them by the millions in
the war. This showed us how to mass produce fashion clothing.” Fenwick is predominately a fashion store, and that is certainly how it started, but over the years, it has adapted to trends and the needs of customers, growing into the great department store it is today. But just how did Fenwick grow? “New ideas and new space,” says Christopher. “In the 1960s, Newcastle was changing its layout as a city. Eldon Square Shopping Centre was built around our store, because we had the biggest flow. “We, at the same time, had ‘The Master Plan’. We rebuilt the entire store, expanded beauty and introduced household goods like linens, glass and china.” Riding out the storm and adapting to the market has been a key part in the success of the Fenwick brand. There have been some difficult times in retail over the years, but if you have distinction, among many other things, you’ll come out on top. A philosophy, it seems, Christopher and I share… “Distinction is key,” he says. “If you take the military for example; the Royal Marines are soldiers like everybody else, but they’ve got a distinction. “And it’s the same in Fenwick. We’ve always done things in a special, particular way. Having the family involved in the business has been part of the creation of the overall envelope, and it has given it a certain character. “We’re a little bit quirky, but you’ve got to be ‘main-line’ at the same time. You can’t be too quirky, but you’ve got to be different. Occasionally we have these unique ideas – and it is an individuality that gives us a distinction. “For our success, we also give thanks to
our fantastic staff. They’re very much in charge of us. “It’s the staff, the stock and the steering – if you want to alliterate it!” With trusty staff spanning all nine sites, stock from all four corners of the world, and the family still involved in the steering of the ship, Christopher is confident the Fenwick business will continue to flourish. “We’re rolling out the online side of the business now. We’re a little late in the game, but we like to do things well,” he explains. Christopher will be launching his book, ‘The Story of Fenwick and its Family’ at Waterstones on October 9 2019 – in the city where it all began. “It seemed like the right thing to do. It’s where we are from – it’s our bread and butter. “Newcastle will always feel like a home for me. I’m a season ticket holder as St James’ Park, so that encourages my regular visits. I’ve followed Newcastle from an early age. It’s natural, isn’t it? “I’m up here about once a fortnight. I go to the games, sit alongside a fella with language you wouldn’t appreciate very much,” he laughs. Christopher has, of course, taken a step back from the direct running of the business in recent years, but it’s something that will always be a part of his life. “I’m avuncular, I think is the best way of describing it,” he says. “I’ve got nothing to do with the running of the store, but I like to think I’ve got many friends here. I say hi as I go by and take a strong interest for the family. That allows me to have the time to write a book, which I’m sure you will enjoy.” The book is available to purchase at Waterstones: waterstones.com

SCANDI SUPPER
Sometimes, when worlds collide, it’s chaos. Other times, it’s magical. At Restaurant Hjem - Northumberland’s new fine-dining spot - it’s the stuff of foodie dreams. Under its effortlessly-chic roof, simple Scandi-style cooking, hearty Northumbrian produce and warm and welcoming North East hospitality combine and clash in the tastiest of ways. You’ll find it in the teeny village of Wall, just north of Hexham, surrounded by rolling hills and lush Northumbrian countryside. Housed within The Hadrian at Wall - a popular pub around these parts - it’s the brainchild of Swedish chef, Alex Nietosvuori, and his partner, Ally Thompson, who hails from Northumberland. After years spent managing and working in big-time restaurants, some Michelin-star, in the likes of Copenhagen, Sweden, Chile, London and Australia, the pair fell in love with the idea of opening their own place. The dream was to create a unique foodie destination that celebrated both their backgrounds, bringing together the finest and freshest North East produce and traditional Scandinavian cooking techniques. That place opened just a few months ago. Hjem - pronounced “yem” - which means ‘home’ in both Scandinavian and Northumbrian dialect. A clever and fitting nod to the pair’s roots. Inside, it’s typically Scandi. Clean, bright, minimalistic. Stone-coloured walls, views of the sweeping Tyne Valley, wooden tables, bowls and pots (all handmade by a local craftsman), clay tableware (made by a local potter) and rustic centrepieces made out of tree branches. Simple. Comfy. Effortlessly stylish. It seats 24 diners, all of whom are treated to tempting bites from its small, but mighty, open kitchen. Instead of your standard starters, mains and desserts, I discover it’s more about enjoying a little bit of everything here. Once seated, you can indulge in either a six or 12-course tasting menu, showcasing the best local ingredients Ally and Alex can get their hands on. “Instead of just a typical meal out, we want everyone’s visit to Hjem to be an exciting, memorable experience. And the tasting menu is a great way of achieving that,” says Ally. “Not only does it give our guests a real flavour of Alex’s style of cooking, it also allows us to showcase the many different ingredients we’re working with. “Northumberland is an amazing place for sourcing top quality produce and I’ve loved using it all to develop a whole range of dishes,” says Alex. “Just to give people an insight as to how close our suppliers are to us, our vegetables, beef, pork, lamb and dairy all come from farms, gardens and farm shops right here in Northumberland.” And when they say close, they mean it. It’s all tantalisingly near. A farmer in the next village provides the chicken, duck, guinea fowl and turkey. The pork and dairy come
from North Acomb Farm - a 10-minute drive from the restaurant - and the eggs come from chickens that roam free in next door’s field. A chap called Jeff Hogg, who lives at the bottom of the restaurant’s garden, drops off freshly-laid delights each morning. He also tends to Alex and Ally’s small rooftop garden, where all the restaurant’s herbs and plants are grown. The veggies come from a nearby patch in Gunnerton. “It wasn’t until I left the North East to work elsewhere that I started to appreciate just how beautiful Northumberland is,” says Ally. “Now that I’m back where I grew up, I really want to make the most of our surroundings and show off the amazing produce that’s right here on our doorstep. “People keep saying it must’ve been hard to find so many small, local suppliers nearby, but it really wasn’t. While the building work was going on, we took the time to get out and about and really explore our surroundings, uncovering the best growers and farmers we could find. “We’ve built up great relationships with some really talented people - people whose philosophies are in line with our own - and we’re really happy with what they all bring to Hjem.” Whichever menu you go for, expect a mix of small, field-to-plate morsels and slightly bigger plates. It’s fancy, fine-dining fare; beautifully-constructed and brimming with colour and the most imaginative flavour. “My style of cooking is typically Scandinavian - very simple. There are only two or three components to each dish and they’re all quite light. It’s easy to make our food look beautiful as we have so many fresh and vibrant herbs and flowers at our disposal. They have the power to elevate a simple plate of food into something quite special.” You can also go down the wine and juice-pairing route, I learn, which really tops off the whole dining experience. If beer’s your thing, ask for a bottle of the stuff - it’s brewed just down the road. Alex tells me the menus are changing constantly and that he’ll continue to switch things up as the months and seasons roll on, but current culinary standouts include melt-in-the-mouth cod head with chicken skin and garden herbs, pink fir apple potato with blackcurrant, quail egg and pickled pork, plus Northumbrian beef, cooked ’til it melts in the mouth. For something sweet, go for the horseradish ice cream with apple caramel (far nicer than you might think), or buttery singing hinnies. “The minute a new cut of meat, a type of fish, or a particular vegetable comes into season and starts tasting really good, I’ll incorporate it into the menu somehow. Making the best of - and celebrating - the ingredients around is our whole ethos.” 12-course tasting menu - £75 per person. Six-course tasting menu - £45 per person. Wine and juice pairing from £40 per person. Open Wednesday - Saturday. Reservations from 7pm. To book, email reservations@ restauranthjem.co.uk. More for information, visit: restauranthjem.co.uk
Under its effortlessly-chic roof, simple Scandi-style cooking, hearty Northumbrian produce and warm and welcoming North East hospitality combine and clash in the tastiest of ways

PLANT-POWERED
Savouring the seasons WITH KAREN PHILLIPS • 30g butter • 1 tbsp maple syrup • 1 tbsp cider vinegar • 100g feta cheese, cubed • 3 eggs beaten • 150g plain goat’s yogurt/Greek yogurt • 1 tbsp chopped fresh tarragon or 1 tsp dried tarragon
September heralds harvests, new school years and hopefully an Indian summer – or at least cessation of the monsoons! MOJO DE AJO (MEXICAN GARLIC SAUCE) One crop that persistently does well in the North, whatever the summer weather, is glorious garlic. I am always asked what crops can be planted now and the answers are pretty limited, unless you have access to a greenhouse or polytunnel. But garlic is one crop that gets planted, depending on which of the many varieties you choose, from September onwards. Neat rows of upright ‘garlic soldiers’ grace the vegetable plot throughout the coldest days of winter, quietly bulking up till harvest time in July/August. Before you get all excited and delve into the salad drawer to find those neglected sprouting garlic bulbs, it’s crucial that you plant virus-free bulbs that can be purchased from your local nursery or garden centre or, for an amazing array of garlic varieties, visit The Garlic Farm online. They’re based on the Isle of Wight and along with selling unusual hard neck and soft neck varieties, such as Spanish Rocambole and Elephant garlic, they have a wealth of information on the website including a Garlic Growing Calendar. When your garlic bulbs arrive, it’s simply a case of splitting the bulbs into individual cloves and planting each clove, pointed end upwards 3cm deep and 15cm apart. Do very little except admire your little soldiers and keep the garlic plot weed-free. Then, come late summer, you can enjoy your very own garlic fest. It’s worth bearing in mind that hard neck varieties don’t store well (soft neck varieties do), so recipes that use up heads of garlic are the order of the day. The longer and slower you cook garlic, the mellower and sweeter the taste is, so don’t think you’ll be enlisted to fight off vampires the next day. Here are two of my favourite garlic recipes. thegarlicfarm.co.uk/growing/calendar
60 luxe-magazine.co.uk
A fabulous recipe from a favourite old cookbook, Cook by Thomasina Miers. • 2 whole bulbs, peeled and chopped in a food processor • 200ml olive oil • 1 tsp chipotle paste (or 3 red chillies seeded and chopped) • Lime juice and salt and pepper to taste Method Heat the olive oil on the gentlest heat possible and sweat the garlic for 20 minutes until it’s soft and caramelised – do not burn or the garlic and oil will taste bitter. Add the chillies or chipotle paste and cook for another minute or two. Remove from the heat and season with a squeeze of lime juice and salt and pepper. Store in a sealed container/jar in the fridge for up to two weeks. Use to top pan-fried steaks or prawns.
CARAMELISED GARLIC AND BUTTERNUT SQUASH TART WITH GLUTEN-FREE PASTRY We have a lot of people attending our courses now who are trying to limit or omit gluten from their diets, so experimentation with pastry recipes for our gluten-free baking course resulted in some delightful melt-inthe-mouth pastry cases. Gluten-free pastry case: • 450g gluten-free flour • 50g gram (chickpea flour) • 200g unsalted butter, cold • 1 egg, beaten • 1 tbsp ice-cold water • 1 tbsp fresh tarragon, finely chopped or 1 tsp dried tarragon Filling: • 1 butternut squash/onion squash • 3 bulbs of garlic, cloves peeled
Method Mix the flours in a large bowl. Dice the butter and rub into the flour until fine breadcrumbs are formed. Add a little more flour if you are struggling to reach the crumble stage – a lot depends on which gluten-free flour you are using. Mix in the egg using a knife and only add the ice-cold water if the pastry does not come together into a ball. Roll out the pastry between two sheets of greaseproof paper and use to line eight individual tartlet tins, or one large 20cm tart tin. Place in the fridge to chill while you make the filling. Pre-heat the oven to 180 degrees. Cut the butternut squash into wedges, leaving the skin on and remove the seeds. Roast the butternut squash in the oven with a little drizzle of olive oil and some salt and pepper for 45 minutes, or until tender. Allow to cool a little, then remove the skin and cut into bite-sized chunks. Line the pastry cases with parchment and fill with baking beans. Bake for 10 minutes, then remove the paper and bake uncovered for 10 minutes more, or until the case is crisp. Remove from the oven. Meanwhile, pop the peeled garlic cloves into a small saucepan with a couple of tablespoons of water. Simmer gently until the garlic is almost tender, then add the butter and increase the heat and cook until the water has almost evaporated and the garlic has just started to brown. Reduce the heat and add the syrup, vinegar and salt and pepper, and simmer very gently until the cloves are coated in a dark syrup, but are still intact – not mush! Mix the yogurt with the beaten eggs and tarragon (if using dried) in a jug. Arrange the butternut squash on the tart base, then pour over the yogurt/egg mix and dot with the feta cubes. Scatter over the caramelised garlic and any syrup. Sprinkle with the chopped fresh tarragon if you haven’t used dried. Reduce the oven temperature to 170 degrees and bake for 30 minutes until browned and set.
RICK PICKINGS FROM THE GARDEN Madness reigns in the kitchen at this time of year as the battle to harvest and preserve all your hard- earned fruit and veg commences. Curses are heard as jellies overboil on to hobs, faces are steamed to a spa-like glow as blanching water for vegetables is constantly simmered, and shelves in the larder need reinforcement under the weight of the ruby, amber and golden jars of preserves. How did Felicity Kendal manage to look radiant throughout the ‘Good Life’ while you resemble a reddened banshee, with plum and cherrystained hands and frazzled hair? But, come a cold day in January and February, when sizzling sausages are smothered in homemade plum and chilli jelly, it will all have been worth it!

YES CHEF
FOOD MATTERS with chef Michael Wignall… Our new culinary columnist invites us in to his foodie world
I’m delighted to join the Luxe family and share my love for Yorkshire and the North East. I grew up in the Lake District, so this part of the world means a lot to me. There are so many inspiring things happening here in the North; the food scene is getting bigger and more exciting all the time and it’s wonderful to be a part of it. My wife, Johanna, and I took over the famed Angel Inn at Hetton in September and it feels great to be back in Yorkshire. We have big plans for the Angel and I look forward to sharing them with you all as they unfold… MY FOOD TRAVELS >>> We recently enjoyed a trip to Wales, where we stayed at Ynyshir, Gareth Ward’s restaurant with rooms, just outside the Snowdonia National Park. Gareth has been winning awards at Ynyshir left, right and centre recently and I’d been dying to visit him. There is no menu; all 24 courses are a complete surprise and, boy, what a surprise they are. Every dish was insanely good you could see and taste the work that had gone into every element. I’d encourage anyone who loves their food to pay it a visit - it’s really special. Further afield, we also loved Faviken in Sweden, which we visited last spring. It’d been on my bucket list for a long time and the whole experience is still on my mind - it was just on another level. The grounds that the restaurant sits within are truly beautiful and most of the food that chef Magnus Nilsson serves is grown, foraged, caught or reared right there on the estate. We had about 30 courses of phenomenal food - each one unforgettable.

Salt-baked celeriac, fermented Yorkshire garlic emulsion, celeriac purée, ricotta Serves 6
For the salt-baked celeriac Ingredients 1 medium-sized celeriac 150g salt 300g plain flour 200g water Hen of the woods mushrooms A handful of baby watercress Method Mix the salt and plain flour together in a bowl, slowly adding the water to make a pastry (you may not need to use all of the water – just until your pastry is the correct consistency to roll out). Roll out the pastry and wrap it around the whole celeriac. Place on a baking tray and cook in the oven at 180C for 1 and 3/4 hours (ideally until the internal temperature reaches 87C).

ON MY PLATE >> There is an abundance of stone fruits and berries at the moment, so we’re busy with ferments and making our own wine. Of course, game season is upon us. This is an exciting time for us - my favourite time of the year. We are so lucky to be in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, with fantastic moorland on our doorstep. I’ve worked with the same local gamekeeper for years; I stuck by him when I moved to the South East and then to the South West, as the produce from up here really is second-to-none. A favourite dish of mine during this time of year is loin and best end of hare, smoked beetroot, puffed buckwheat and toasted buckwheat milk. Look out for this on the menu soon.
Michael’s luxe facts… • Michael was awarded two Michelin stars in 2012, at his restaurant in Surrey. Following his move to Gidleigh Park, Devon, in 2016, he again retained two Michelin stars within just 10 months of his arrival. • He was awarded five AA Rosettes in
January 2017 - the first time the AA had ever awarded five rosettes mid-year in its 61-year history. • He’s travelled all over the world in the name of food and has worked in kitchens in the likes of Spain, France, Surrey, Devon, North Yorkshire, The Lake District and Lancashire, where he grew up.
MY WORLD >> Refurbishment work at the Angel began in September and we’re excited to see our vision come to life. We want to bring the pub into the 21st century, but retain the original, traditional features that make the place so special. Our bedrooms and kitchen will be given a makeover in January 2020, as well as, subject to planning permissions, our second project - the introduction of our sister restaurant, Cove. The Angel’s original wine cave will form the nucleus of Cove and an expansive steel and glass structure has been designed to shed brilliance on what will be a truly unique dining experience. A modern, luxurious haven - a space that connects the old with the new - is what we envision. I’ve always wanted to do something that reflects my food and I - and this is my opportunity. Watch this space.
Remove from the oven and leave to cool. Once cool, break open the pastry and remove the skin. Then roughly tear the celeriac into pieces.
For the garlic emulsion Ingredients 4 cloves Yorkshire garlic (blanched for 7 minutes) 4 cloves black garlic 1 egg yolk 60g water 1.1g xantham gum 2g salt 175g sunflower oil Method Add all of the ingredients, apart from the oil, into a small jug blender and blitz until well mixed. Slowly add the oil to emulsify, then season to taste. Pass through a fine sieve.
For the celeriac discs Method Using a mandolin, cut the celeriac
into slices, approximately 3mm thick. Using a 7cm-round cutter, cut into disks. Set the off-cuts aside for your purée. Cook in salted simmering water for one minute. Remove from the water, lay flat and allow to cool.
Method Bring the oil to 50C. Add your nasturtiums and oil to a jug blender and blitz on max for 20 seconds. Pass through a muslin and chill. Any excess oil can be stored in the freezer.
For the celeriac purée
To plate
Ingredients Off-cuts of celeriac from your disks 100g butter Salt to season Method Take the off-cuts of the celeriac from your disks and finely slice. Place into a ziplock or vac pack bag, remove air and seal. Boil in the bag for 40-45 minutes. Blend with the butter, salt and a little hot water.
For the nasturtium oil Ingredients 100g nasturtium leaves 220g sunflower oil
Colour off your mushrooms in oil and season with salt and pepper on both sides. Add a knob of butter to the pan and allow to foam. Cook the mushrooms for a few seconds. Lightly colour your salt-baked celeriac in oil and season with salt and pepper. Heat your celeriac disks in hot water, drain and glaze with olive oil, or melted butter. Wilt the baby watercress lightly with oil and season with salt and pepper. Heat your purée. You can make your own ricotta, or buy the best quality you can find. Add approximately two heaped teaspoons of ricotta to each plate, then serve.

WINE TIME
Wild thoughts September marks the start of wood pigeon season - and it’s perfect for a fall feast, says Chadwicks Inn Maltby’s head chef, Steve Lawford. The restaurant’s expert sommelier, Lee Tolley talks us through some fabulous French reds to accompany the dish
Robust reds >> Volnay (Louis Jadot), Beaune, France 2008 (100% Pinot Noir) 13% ABV
The house of Maison Louis Jadot own over 60 hectares of vineyards and was founded in 1859. Like the wine above, it is also 100% Pinot Noir Burgundy but eight years younger. It presents the same fruit such as red berries, redcurrants and raspberries, but these fruits are more prominent than the previous wine due to it being younger. This wine also shows characters that you would expect from an ageing wine such as vegetal flavours. The wine still has potential to age further but is drinking fantastically well as it is at the moment. A quality red Burgundy.
Yorkshire Wood Pigeon, Doreen’s Black Pudding, Black Garlic & Parsley >> Serves 4
Ingredients 4 x pigeon (ask your butcher for oven ready pigeon) 400g x Doreen’s black pudding 1 x bulb black garlic 2 x bunches parsley 1l x olive pomace oil 6 x eggs 1tsp x mustard 50g x plain flour 30g x breadcrumbs
Method • For the black garlic mayonnaise - separate four egg yolks into a food processor, add a teaspoon of mustard and the peeled black garlic. Blitz while slowly pouring in 200ml of pomace oil. Season with table salt.
Corton Grand Cru (Domaine Louis Latour), Burgundy, France 2000 • For the parsley oil - blanch one bunch of parsley in boiling water with salt and bicarbonate of soda. Drain, then add the blanched and fresh parsley to a food processor. Blitz whilst slowing pouring in 500ml of pomace oil. Pass through a fine sieve. • Cut the black pudding into cubes. To coat - toss in the flour, then beaten egg and finally breadcrumbs. • To cook the pigeon - pan fry on the crown then, with breasts facing up, put them in the oven for four minutes at 190°C. Remove from oven and rest for five minutes. • Fry the black pudding until golden brown.
(100% Pinot Noir) 14% ABV
To serve… Once the pigeon is rested, carefully remove the breasts from the crown, season the underside and present with the black pudding and black garlic mayonnaise. Finish with the parsley oil and a few fresh parsley leaves. Enjoy!
From the north of the village of Pauillac, we have a wine from a vineyard that was established back in 1705. This top quality Bordeaux offers up rich, ripened dark summer fruits such as blackberries, with notes of black pepper and tobacco also coming through. A superb example of Pauillac.
The creation of Maison Louis Latour dates back to 1797, just eight years after the French revolution. This 19 year old Burgundy has some fruit notes such as red berries and raspberries. These fruit notes have mellowed with age and made way for the aged flavours such wet and dry autumn leaves and vegetal flavours. A perfectly balanced wine with great length. Well worth waiting 19 years for.

YORKSHIRE FLAIR
Malton man Jessica Laing chats to Tom Naylor-Leyland, the man responsible for putting Malton on the map as Yorkshire’s food capital… Malton has come a long way in the last decade or so. What was once a sleepy market town is now one of the North’s leading foodie destinations, brimming with mouthwatering monthly markets and flavour-packed festivals and events. Home to a growing number of up-andcoming independent businesses - everything from butchers and bakers to macaroonmakers - it’s a place to treat your tastebuds to something new and celebrate everything that’s great about local food. The chap responsible for the town’s tasty resurgence is Tom Naylor-Leyland. As director of Visit Malton, it’s his job to keep the town’s social calendar as packed and as buzzing as can be - and this means making sure there’s plenty to do, talk about and eat. As we head into autumn - a season of abundance when it comes to fresh, homegrown produce - I catch up with him to find out more about his story and what’s happening in his beloved foodie town as the leaves turn brown… JL: Have you always been a foodie? TNL: My first jobs were all in food, so I suppose I caught the bug young. After I left school, I was a butler at Dukes Hotel in London. I was on room service duty, which saw me deliver hundreds of breakfast trays! After that, I worked for chef Sally Clarke behind the counter at her fab deli in London. JL: Tell us about your connection to Malton… TNL: My family has owned property in the
64 luxe-magazine.co.uk
town since 1713. My mum grew up in the North East - she’s a proud Geordie - so this part of the world has always had a special place in my heart. JL: How and when did Malton’s transition into a foodie destination begin? TNL: Malton’s always been a lovely place to live, but over the last few years we’ve just been promoting it in a different way. It’s now all about the food. The idea came about when I was living in London. I’d go to Borough Market and find that people were shouting about how great Yorkshire produce was. I thought, why are you doing it here? Why not in Yorkshire? I decided I’d give it a shot, so I moved home, kicked off the first Malton Food Lovers Festival and here we are today. That was a decade ago! JL: How do you feel about Malton’s reputation as ‘Yorkshire’s Food Capital’? TNL: It was actually the late - and very great - chef, Antonio Carluccio, who first called it that. He visited the town when we were launching our first Malton Food Lovers Festival and we haven’t looked back since. JL: For food fans who are yet to visit, what can they expect to find in Malton? TNL: What’s great about Malton is that it’s now a foodie destination all year round. Although we’re best-known for our festivals, there’s plenty to discover no matter what time of week or year you visit. I’d recommend taking a class at our cookery school, or paying Talbot Yard Food Court a visit - it’s home to six amazing artisan
producers. We’ve also launched special Malton Food Tours, which give visitors a chance to go behind the scenes at some of our best-loved venues. JL: There’s a great feeling of community in Malton - would you agree? TNL: Absolutely and I think that the new events and food shops have really helped create that feeling. Many of our events are run by volunteers and that really does create an amazing atmosphere. Helping to build a strong foodie community here is genuinely one of the best things I’ve ever been involved with. JL: How important is celebrating local food to you? TNL: It’s our whole ethos. Malton is home to so many fantastic producers; people who make everything from baked goods and charcuterie treats, to coffee, beer, gin and gelato. We also have access to the finest grouse, pheasant, partridge, venison, rabbit, hare, rare breed cattle and pigs. Our lobster and crab come straight from the Yorkshire coast. There’s so much to discover. JL: What kind of food do you like to eat at home?
WHAT’S ON THIS AUTUMN/WINTER… Saturday 7 September - Malton Harvest Food Festival A free celebration of all that is good and tasty this time of year. Expect a harvest of game, seafood, wild and foraged veg, soft fruit, autumnal bakes and more. Set across Malton’s Market Place, with chef demos, over 100 stalls, family entertainment, live music, talks and tastings. Saturday 12 October and Saturday 9 November - Malton Monthly Food Market Think 35 specialist food stalls selling fresher-than-fresh produce and the finest
TNL: I adore fish, seafood and sushi. But I also have an affection for street food. There’s just something really inviting about the smells, the sounds and the immediacy of it all. At home, I’m a bit like a monk from Monday to Friday, then a bit like Elvis in his final years once the weekend arrives. JL: When you’re not working, what does life look like? TNL: Family life is busy. My wife, Alice, and I have three kids, so going to work feels like going on holiday sometimes! When I do have free time, I turn to music. I’m a frustrated boogie-woogie piano player nd love writing country music. JL: What are your hopes for Malton’s future? TNL: In the last five years, 26 new food and drink businesses, including a wood-fired pizza restaurant, a gin distillery, a vegetarian and vegan deli and an award-winning brewery, have opened their doors in Malton. I hope we welcome even more producers to the town as the next five years roll on. With the addition of our brand new coaching inn, The Talbot, I also hope more and more people will choose to stay a while. A day is never enough in my book there’s so much to explore!
street food. Held on the second Saturday of the month, they give food-lovers and amateur cooks the chance to shop and eat local. Free entry and parking. Saturday 7 December and Sunday 8 December - Malton Christmas Food and Gift Market The town’s popular monthly food market - with added sparkle. The festive version promises the finest Christmassy produce, alongside spectacular gift stalls, seasonal live music and entertainment. Enjoy figgy puddings, prepared turkeys and geese, mulled wine, roasted chestnuts, cheeseboards, mince pie gelato and more.

Hip hotels with Debrah Dhugga From Paris with LOVE
HOTEL >> Last month I was lucky enough to stay at the fabulous Fauchon L’Hotel, the first hotel to be opened under the name of the prominent, luxury, gastronomic brand. The hotel is just around the corner from the famous delicatessen opened by Auguste Fauchon in 1886 in the Place de la Madeleine. It is housed in an historic Haussmanien building and was designed by Parisien architect Richard Martinet, who has flawlessly incorporated the original charm with modern aesthetics - most noticeably the iconic splashes of pink that can be spotted everywhere from the concierge’s tie to the macarons. And Fauchon l’Hotel is just a 20-minute drive away from Gare du Nord: wasting none of my precious weekend time. ROOMS >> The 54 rooms and suites are traditionally Parisien and quintessentially Fauchon, with lavish king size beds, marble bathrooms, floor-to-ceiling French doors opening out onto fairy-tale views of Paris. And then there’s Gourmet Bar - Fauchon’s take on the standard hotel mini bar. The Gourmet Bar is anything but ‘standard’:
an elegant rose-pink armoire, designed by French designer Sacha Lakic from eminent Parisien design company Roche Bobois. Inside, there are various drawers and shelves housing an assortment of Fauchon’s delectable delights, from madeleines, macarons and chocolate truffles to tapenade, foie gras and brioche toasts all suited to my taste preferences (which I was asked for a few days prior). All of these were free for me around the clock, along with a bottle a day of complimentary Fauchon pink champagne. The room was also equipped with a Dyson hairdryer, cosy bathrobe and slippers and miniature Carita Beauty Spa amenities. FOOD >> After waking myself up with a double espresso from the Nespresso machine in my room, I wandered downstairs to explore the Fauchon breakfast. I opted for a brightly coloured fruit salad, poached eggs with a side of delicious Ibaiama, and a freshly baked croissant with Fauchon chocolate spread. The hotel’s restaurant ‘The Grand Café Fauchon’ has a packed schedule of ‘Gourmet Moments’. In addition to breakfast, lunch and dinner, there is ‘Tea Time’ - a chance
It is housed in an historic Haussmanien building and was designed by Parisien architect Richard Martinet, who has flawlessly incorporated the original charm with modern aesthetics
to sample a huge variety of fragrant fruit and flower flavoured Fauchon teas. As the evening draws near, ‘Tea Time’ transitions into ‘The Glam’Hours’ and cups of tea turn into tea-based cocktails, which can be sipped on the terrace in the evening sun with a few nibbles of chocolate, selected from Fauchon’s luxury confectionary. CARITA BEAUTY SPA >> Like everything at L’Hotel Fauchon, the spa treatments at Carita Beauty Spa are customised to best suit you. Treatments range from facials, body treatments and massages to manicures, pedicures,

hair-styling and makeup application. After consulting with a beautician, I chose a Neomorphose facial that left my skin feeling plumped and purified. If you’re feeling a little slothful, you can opt to enjoy these services in the comfort of your hotel room. MY VERDICT >> Fauchon’s new venture into hotels is triumphant, managing to weave a gastronomic thread through every aspect of one’s stay. LOCATION >> Take a country track just off the A19 near Osmotherley, and windy roads will lead you to an unassuming car park, surrounded by rolling countryside and a couple of cute cottages. In the distance you’ll see towering pines – beneath them, is our home for the night. Whether you’re visiting in the height of summer, or in the deepest winter, this is the perfect spot for an evening under the stars – or a cosy evening by the fire in your new canvas crib. The lovely Matt and Elizabeth are the brains behind A Place in Pines. The story started with a bit of land, some trees, a pond and an ability to throw a mean barbecue. Roll all of those into one, and you’ve got a pretty cool campsite – with a lovely, luxe twist. STYLE >> A place in the Pines is like nowhere I’ve been before. Venture into the woods, check in to your canvas lodge and you’ll feel completely lost – but right at home at the same time. It’s exciting, it’s enchanting and it’s really quite magical. The lodges themselves are something you might find in the Swiss mountains – or in the depths of Canada. Each canvas cabin is set in its own secluded

spot beneath the trees – all kitted out with bathrooms, kitchens, living areas and a veranda. Inside, the style is effortlessly cool. Think dark wood floors, re-upholstered furniture and Scandi-inspired decor. Cosy up by the fire with a fur throw, get lost in a book as you while away the hours on an Ercol rocker, or listen to the birds sing as you enjoy a cup of the good stuff on your decking area. It’s the whimsical woodland retreat we’ve all been waiting for – and it’s right here on our doorstep in North Yorkshire! HIGHLIGHTS >> Waking up to the smell of a campfire, the fresh country air and bacon cooking on the stove. Is there anything better? If the location isn’t enough to give you that warm, fuzzy feeling – the homemade treats found in and around your lodge will. Warm up with a sloe gin, cover your toast in homemade honey and collect your breakfast eggs from the hens and ducks on site. Highlights aplenty here. Hot baths. Honesty boxes. Heaps of logs. There’s a hot bath, a woodburning stove, bunk beds, a master suite, camp-inspired kitchen, dining table, sofa with cosy furnishings and hot water bottles to see you through those cooler nights. After a busy working week, we’re ready to switch off in our stylish sanctuary set within the trees. FOOD AND DRINK >> On a cool, drizzly evening, the pines keep us dry and our saviour stove keeps us toasty, but it also delivers the goods
when it comes to cooking up a storm inside. Sunnier nights can be spent barbecuing on the terrace, or getting to the grips with the pizza oven hidden in the woodland. For us, it’s a bit of slow cooking in the stove – for dinner and for breakfast. Delicious. DO THIS >> The sleeping and strolling opportunities are endless here. If you manage to peel yourself from your cosy bunk, wake up with a cup of fresh coffee and explore the pines. There’s a pond where you can get up close and personal with the woodland’s wild residents, or you’ll find sheep, pigs and ponies in the next field, who will appreciate a pat and a carrot. Animals aside, there are plenty of local walks – taking in the hills, the woodlands and more. A tranquil walk around Cod Beck Reservoir near Swainby is just a short drive away. LOUNGING ABOUT
HOT PROPERTY Teesside interior design studio, Cocoon & Bauer, turns a lacklustre lounge in Yarm into a luxurious living space
THE LOWDOWN >> Cathal and Chloe Doocey moved into their beloved home - Chilton House, in the village of Low Worsall, just two miles outside of Yarm - in early 2018. Like most families, the couple found themselves retreating to their living room when they wanted to kick-back and unwind - but felt like it was in need of a bit of TLC. Boasting a reception-style area to the entrance and a sunken seating area, flanked by two higher sections, the living area benefitted from oodles of space, but what it lacked was functionality and style. In a bid to bring it to life, they painted the walls a shade of blue, but soon fell out of love. Feeling uninspired, they enlisted the help of Peter Turner, managing director of Cocoon & Bauer, and his team, as part of a £100,000 home makeover, to help inject some personality and make the most of the space. THE TRANSFORMATION >> Peter and his team tackled the transformation with the same dedicated, passion and tenacity as they would with any other project.
68 luxe-magazine.co.uk
“The thing that struck me first was the sheer size of the ceiling,” says Peter. “High ceilings are beautiful - most people would kill for them - but theirs had no detailing, no breaks or cornicing. We knew this was something we wanted to change. “Then, thoughts turned to the flooring, which was a rich, orange-coloured wood, and the walls, which were too dark. The whole room looked tired and a bit dated - we felt like it needed a complete overhaul.” The team discovered that Cathal and Chloe’s old conservatory, which was always too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter, took up a lot of room. And so the team looked at removing it altogether to make better use of the space and make the couple’s attractive back garden more accessible. THE RESULTS >> In a bid to create a luxurious aesthetic a request of Chloe’s - Peter and his team worked hard to bring soft, inviting light and contemporary style to the entire living space. “We started by dropping the ceiling down

With regards to the furniture, we wanted to introduce contemporary, but interesting, pieces. We designed bespoke sofas and armchairs, using luxurious velvet and deep, seductive colours at the perimeter of the whole room and in the centre, too, over the sunken area. We painted it in Farrow & Ball Wimborne White, so it looked classy and clean. “We then replaced the flooring with a darker unsaturated floor and painted all of the walls in Farrow & Ball Shaded White, giving us a beautiful blank canvas to play with.” The team purposely left gaps from the new ceiling at each window to allow the curtains to be fitted at a higher level, creating the illusion of the fabric ‘falling’ from above one of the couple’s favourite details. “To create a luxurious ambiance, we thought carefully about the lighting choices we made,” says Peter. “In the end, we installed spotlights within the ceiling to cast light down the fabric of
the curtains. The same lighting effect was also used across all of the new perimeter ceiling to create an attractive ‘halo’ effect. “In place of the conservatory and existing French doors, we fitted brand new, modern bi-folding doors, which open directly on to Cathal and Chloe’s back garden. We also added a neat step detail from the sunken area. “With regards to the furniture, we wanted to introduce contemporary, but interesting, pieces. We designed bespoke sofas and armchairs, using luxurious velvet and deep, seductive colours to create a real sense of luxury and comfort. We also fitted bespoke tinted mirrors and placed a beautiful, dark wood circular entrance table, which aligned perfectly with the bay window.”

EYE FOR DESIGN
FIVE MINUTES WITH
FIONA BARRATTCAMPBELL
Jessica Laing chats to award-winning designer and entrepreneur, Fiona BarrattCampbell. Born and raised in Northumberland - and now based between the North East and London - she’s one of the leading figures in the international world of luxury interior design
WHEN DID YOUR LOVE FOR ALL THINGS DESIGN BEGIN? Born and raised in Northumberland, I have always drawn on the rich history and rugged landscape of my childhood, combining the strong identity of the North with the grandeur of Roman architecture. I was so lucky to be able to play on the beach, or run through fields and the moorlands growing up. YOU LAUNCHED YOUR OWN BUSINESS, FIONA BARRATT INTERIORS, IN 2006 WHEN YOU WERE IN YOUR MID-TWENTIES. WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER MOST ABOUT THAT TIME? I envisioned a studio dedicated to creative
70 luxe-magazine.co.uk
relationships with clients and productive collaborations with artisans and artists. This distinguishes us as an interdisciplinary interior design studio with a detailed, focused approach, celebrated for transparency and with the ability to create excellence. When I started Fiona Barratt Interiors, my mission was commitment to bespoke, luxury interior design to enrich and enhance an interior space through an exceptionally skilled and personalised service, for both residential and commercial clients. A successful interior should enhance, not dictate, the way my clients live and my vision was to build a studio to become an aspiration for the internationally elite through an unsurpassable service and an understanding of the balance between timeless luxury and intelligent design.
HOW HAS YOUR OWN PERSONAL STYLE EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS? For my work to stand the test of time, I wanted to always remain true to traditional craft methods, so I work with local artisans and craftsmen across the globe, transforming raw materials into beautiful, unique pieces. I want to create a visual play on my
heritage and provenance, which has evolved over the years to create the ultimate aspirational living. I strive to continually achieve results that offer a unique outcome. My work has also evolved as my life has evolved. Having three children makes sure you design with practicality and longevity in mind. Travelling and experiencing new cultures and places
SEP/OCT19
EYE FOR DESIGN is hugely important in developing styles and finishes. Although this modern theme remains core to my interiors, I do also experiment with antiques and I very much enjoy the characters and mix of textures that the modern and antique pieces bring to a room. Each individual space needs to provide the framework to explore a way of life; whether that is relaxing with a partner, socialising with friends, meeting new people, sharing ideas or escaping. WHAT, OR WHO, INSPIRES YOU MOST? Design runs in my DNA; Sir Lawrie Barratt, my grandfather, is my greatest inspiration. My interest in property, architecture and interiors began with him and a strong work ethic runs in the Barratt blood. As the founder of Barratt Homes, his motto has helped me build my own empire by instilling the power of ‘never give up’ into me. Nature is also a big inspiration, as it is constantly evolving in terms of texture, form and colour. Travelling also inspires me. HOW IMPORTANT IS EXPLORING AND EXPERIMENTING WITH TRENDS TO YOU? I really don’t follow trends. Design is fundamentally about conversation - between styles, locality of a project, cultures, objects and people. I do experiment with textures and materials and I love weaving and respecting the architecture of the building to create something inimitable. Working extensively in both the private residential market and the property investment market, the word ‘trend’ comes up quite a bit. I would say I don’t follow trends, I make them!
WHAT KIND OF PROJECTS DOES YOUR WORK SEE YOU AND YOUR TEAM TAKE ON? We operate on a global scale, working on everything from new builds on coastal islands, to developments in major cities, far east hotels and listed country manors. The latter are often the most challenging, especially when it comes to the integration of services. Client requirements are now so sophisticated. For example, trying to get air-con into an 18th century building is not easy! Although known for our high-end residential designs, we have also completed many development and hospitality projects. Our years of experience and expertise allow us to advise clients comprehensively on the maximisation and functionality of any design vision and space. WHAT KIND OF SERVICE CAN CLIENTS EXPECT FROM FIONA BARRATT INTERIORS? We undertake projects from conception to completion, whether that be a new build from the ground up, or a complete restoration of a listed building. At the studio’s heart is a passion for style and creativity, combined with quality, functionality and an understanding of the many facets of a space. The studio’s philosophy is the exploration of aesthetics; fluid and elegant spaces are born with an understanding of the aspirations of the client, the relevance of the location and maximisation of the elements of the space. This is developed with imagination, vision and alchemy. The result of this attention to detail is an interior that tells a story and, most importantly, an interior that evokes an emotion. fionabarrattinteriors.com

POSH POOCHES with Alfie, helped by Elysia Agnew
A new tail-wagging term What a summer it has been for our wave-chasing, hill-hiking, sun-worshiping Retriever. But now, it’s time to fall back into routine as we step into a new season in the combined human and hound world. The leaves are starting to fall; for some it means back to school, for others it means packing the suitcases away for the year - but for our posh pooches, it means nothing more than a change of scenery, some crisp new walks and the chance to chill out by the fire as the dark nights draw in. Alfie has sniffed out some fall fashion finds to spruce up those autumn/winter wardrobes, he’s picked out some canine-friendly cafés for cake and coffee-lovers, and he’s been catching up with Maisy the Cocker Spaniel - a blonde bombshell with an eye for design! Keep shining bright as the days turn to night. Alfie, your Luxe pooch x

MIGHTY XXXXXXXX MOTOR
AT THE WHEEL with Bob Arora
Bob takes the new Lexus UX for a spin
Small but mighty The small SUV sector is the fastest growing market in Europe. The Germans all have a car in this segment: BMW have the X1, Audi have the Q3, Mercedes the GLA, VW have the Tiguan and Volvo have the XC40, which is my current favourite. Now, Lexus have decided to join the party with the new UX. The first thing you can’t help but notice is the very imposing grill. I have to admit, I think it looks really menacing, especially if you have one behind you and you see it in your rear-view mirror! The designers have given this car plenty of curves and creases all over the bodywork and it looks really cool. The rear of the car reminds me of the current Porsche Cayenne and Macan, with the strip brake light across the back. The UX is available in three trims. All models have radar cruise control and autonomous driving aids, reverse camera and a 7-inch infotainment screen with satellite navigation and LED headlights. The F-Sport benefits from parking sensors, heated and electric seats, F-Sport styling and 18-inch alloy wheels. The range-topping Takumi, meanwhile, has leather upholstery and Mark Levinson speakers. You can choose between two or four-wheel drive and the base model costs just under £30,000. The F-Sport I drove is priced from £33,000, while the Takumi costs £39,000. I would like to see Lexus add some larger alloys as there is too much of a gap between the alloys and the wheel arches for me. A 20-inch alloy would make the car look really mean and sporty, and would appeal to the younger buyers that Lexus are desperate to attract. Lexus anticipate 80% of UX buyers will be new to the brand. The car’s interior isn’t quite as cool as Volvo’s or Audi’s, but it is a nice place to
SEP/OCT19
spend some time. The dash has an array of buttons for the heater controls, but the heated seats and steering wheel buttons are a bit hidden. Lexus, in their wisdom, don’t have a dial to operate the infotainment system. Instead, they have what can only be described as a mouse and pad which is nigh on impossible
it stops you from having to take your eyes off the road. When you start the car, there isn’t any noise, which is a bit strange at first. You also hear a few bongs and jingles, which I found quite eccentric. Trying to switch the car off was just as crazy - I’m still not sure how many times you have to press the power button
g-force display. I did this for hours! The rear doors don’t open very wide and getting access isn’t that easy at all - putting a car seat in, for example, takes a bit of manoeuvring. It’s also a bit of a tight squeeze for three adults in the rear, which is one of the downsides of having a small SUV. However, there is more than enough room for young kids. I drove the two-wheel drive car, which has a really small boot. My test is always the Fenwick delivery, which I struggled to get in the boot. You could say that the car really failed the Bhaji test, but apparently the four-wheel drive model has an even smaller boot, which would have been no good at all for my daily delivery. Boot issues aside, though, the UX is a great car to drive. The lack of diesel engine was always a brave move in my mind, but with all the issues associated with diesel cars nowadays, it was a stroke of genius. With the battery power and a petrol engine, you have the best of both worlds. If you’re looking for one of the most reliable cars, with a great customer service, then this car must be on your radar. Car courtesy of Lexus Newcastle
to use while on the move. Imagine trying to work on a laptop while driving? They really need to ditch this system and go with a rotary which is much easier to use on the go. The buttons and switches all have a quality feel though, and the dash and materials used have a nice, soft touch to them. This car isn’t the best for driving quickly along country roads, but it offers a comfy ride around town or on the motorway, partly due to the excellent seats. Instead of pressing a button to change the drive modes, Lexus have a rotary dial at the side of the dash, which is a bit unusual, but
to turn the car off! Judge me all you want, but I loved trying to drive the car in electric mode as much as I physically could. Watching how using the brakes would recharge the batteries was just as entertaining. You really find yourself changing the way you drive to try to make it more economical. The car switches between electric and petrol modes seamlessly and you only realise the engine has kicked in when the EV light goes off. The driver’s dash has a speedometer in the middle, but pressing a button on the dash made this move across the dash to reveal a

TEST DRIVE
Top sport Bob Arora gets behind the wheel of the Toyota Corolla
Here’s a question for you all. If I asked you to name the world’s best-selling car, I’m sure you would think of maybe the VW Beetle, Ford Model T or maybe the VW Golf. Believe it or not, the world’s best-selling car is none other than the Toyota Corolla. Toyota have managed to sell over 45 million cars since the car was launched back in 1966. This is amazing especially when you consider the Corolla hasn’t been sold in the UK for the last 10 years. The Auris was introduced to replace the Corolla, but lacklustre sales meant the Corolla made its way back with a vengeance. This is no mean feat, especially when you consider the car’s rivals; Golf, Astra and the Ford Focus are all tough competitors. Two areas where the Corolla beats its European rivals is with its class-leading 100,000 mile and five-year warranty – plus the cars are loaded with specifications. All cars have LED headlights, autonomous driving and radar cruise control as standard. The car is available in four trims, the entry level is Ikon, Ikon Tech, Design and the range is topped by Excel. Range-topping cars get very sporty 18” alloys and a different colour roof, giving the car a sleek and extremely sporty look. The first thing you can’t help but notice is the car’s styling. The front of the car, with its super slim LED lights, look really mean and aggressive. The rear reminded me of an Alfa - which is no bad thing. The car is available in hatchback, saloon or estate, so there is a car for everyone. I’d personally have the hatch all-day long. The sloping rear roofline helps with the sporty look, but there is a downside -
anyone tall will find the rear very tight for headroom. The rear doors also have a very narrow opening so loading car seats isn’t very easy at all. The boot is about the same size as the rest of the cars in its class - the rear seats fold to extend the boot. The car’s interior is dominated by an infotainment screen in the middle of the dash. This controls the satellite navigation, phone and radio. The top-of-the-range car has leather and Alcantara upholstery, which just oozes quality. Most models have a digital speedometer in the middle of the speedo, a little display lets you see the car’s range-average fuel consumption. On either side of the speedo there are analogue dials for the fuel tank and water temperature etc. The interior is much better than previous Toyota’s, but it’s still no match for the Golf, which has a really classy interior. The Corolla is priced from £20k and the range topping Excel comes in at just under £30k. The Corolla is available with three engines. The entry level engine is a 1.2lt petrol engine, and both the 1.8lt and 2.0lt engines have hybrid technology. The 1.8lt engine will be the best seller. The batteries aren’t massive, so they don’t take up too much boot space. The 2.0lt engine’s batteries do take up quite a bit of boot space - the upside, however, is the fact you can drive the car in electric mode up to 70mph. The other upside is the car’s fuel economy is in the mid 50s. You’re getting diesel economy but with petrol and electric power. The Corolla is 60% stronger than the outgoing model. It’s also the first Corolla to use a new global platform. I’m sure it will do well in its forthcoming N-Cap safety ratings, especially with the car’s
autonomous driving features along with the air bags all over the cabin. To help improve the drive, Toyota have given the car an independent rear suspension and this does a great job of soaking up any imperfections in the road or potholes. The new Corolla has three drive modes. ‘Eco’ makes you drive much more economically, ‘normal’ mode is as its name suggests - the car feels much smoother over bumps and potholes, and ‘sport’ mode changes the colour of the speedo to red, and the ride feels stiffer. The car is great to look at and it is very stylish, so anyone looking for something other than the usual European rivals should really give this car a test drive. The first thing you can’t help but notice is the car’s styling. The front of the car with its super slim LED lights makes it look really mean and aggressive
