Since joining NE1 four weeks ago as the Deputy Manager for the Street Rangers & Clean Team, it has been a really interesting period where I have been able to see just how hard the teams work to make our city a clean, safe and welcoming place for businesses and visitors. As a Mancunian having only lived in Newcastle for just over three years, it has been refreshing to see just how amazing Newcastle city centre really is. The recent weather conditions have been particularly challenging and the team have been busy clearing snow and ice to make the walkways safe. Storm Emma thought she would try and litter our streets, but we had other ideas! Easter is upon us, which is an exciting time for the city! And over the coming weeks we have Paloma Faith, Stereophonics, Sam Smith, Torvill & Dean’s Dancing on Ice Tour and also Fast & Furious Live all coming to Newcastle, so there is lots to see and do and I really can’t wait! Thankfully spring is not far away either and NE1 will be really busy preparing and commencing its summer program of events, so watch this space for more details. Mark Sumner Deputy Manager

It’s a pretty enchanting hangout - with sweeping fairy lights, an olive tree towering over the tables and a bustling bar area where the magic happens! We kick things off with the hand rolled meatballs (£6.50) - served in a creamy tomato sauce and glazed with punchy Italian cheese. Every last melt-in-the-mouth meatball is scooped up with chargrilled artisan bread. Yum! With a taste of spicy tomato in the palate, my dinner date goes for the garganelli arrabiata (£10.75) when it comes to the main event.

20.03.18 TIME FOR TUESDAY

The Wombats Tuesday tunes! Join The Wombats for an evening of old and new music at Newcastle’s O2 Academy. The indie trio have been taking to the stage for ten years with their infectious melodies and bold beats, and now they’re back with a brand new album, ready to share their work with the people of NE1. Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life is the band’s fourth studio album and we’ve heard it's a good one. You don't want to miss this! academymusicgroup.com

OPERA NORTH / MADAMA BUTTERFLY

If you’re looking for some theatre thrills this Tuesday and you really want to appreciate the finer things in life, make sure you check out Giacomo Puccini’s Madama Butterfly. This Opera North production tells the tender tale of innocent love crushed amidst two utterly different cultures. An exquisitely simple set amplifies the raw emotion throughout. A young, Japanese woman sacrifices everything to marry a U.S Naval Officer, but she is cruelly discarded when he returns to his ‘real’ life in America. A beautiful, engaging and truly inspiring show at the Theatre Royal. theatreroyal.co.uk

It’s nerdy but I love anything to do with the Industrial Revolution and Newcastle is a key part of it, so Lord Armstrong is a definite favourite of mine (especially for Cragside and Jesmond Dene). Second choice, Ser Davos from Game of Thrones! What would you be doing if you weren’t here now? If I‘m not at home rehearsing in Leeds, I’d be over in Leipzig, Germany visiting my girlfriend who is a soloist at the Opera House there. Fun fact? At age 24, I was the youngest member of the Opera North chorus to be accepted in ten years! NE1 for a trip to the

seaside? AS THE NIGHTS GET LIGHTER AND THE DAYS GET WARMER, THERE’S NO NEED TO SWARM TO THE COAST FOR YOUR BEACH FIX... BECAUSE THE NE1 QUAYSIDE SEASIDE IS BACK! Pack up a picnic, pop on your flip-flops and holiday on the Costa del Tyne this summer as the Thomas Cook Airlines Quayside Seaside returns for the seventh year running! The date for your diary is Friday 16th March – the start of another sunshine season to remember in NE1.

It’s hard to remember a summer without our city beach. It’s back and it’s better than ever before this year with sand to sink your toes into, deck chairs to chill out on and everything else you’d expect to see at the seaside. We’ve even got palm trees blowing in the breeze! Although we can’t guarantee bright blue sunshine throughout the summer season, we can guarantee good fun on our pop up beach with events and activities for all the family to enjoy. Grab some lunch, treat yourself to an ice cream and simply enjoy the delights of the Quayside as you unwind in the sunniest spot in town. It’s

a great day out for the whole family. You can stroll, shop and see the city sights before soaking up the sun on our blissful beach – what more could you want? And if the gift of a good old bucket and spade doesn’t do the trick with your little ones, we’ve got a brand new children’s play area to keep them entertained. Foodies looking to hit the beach can look forward to the new resident restaurant, Little Fishy. Fish and chips and fish finger sandwiches are a speciality along with cajun cod and halloumi fries, which earned the restaurant a place in the finals of The National Fish and Chip awards 2017. Whether you’re whiling away an afternoon in the sun, lunching it up al fresco or entertaining the kids, the Quayside Seaside is a fantastic addition to our city’s summertime events calendar and we can’t wait to share it with the people of NE1!

LIMITED-RUN VINYL EDITIONS OF SOUGHT-AFTER RECORDINGS

This year, RPM Music, one of the region’s foremost independent music shops celebrates its 30th anniversary. The owner, Marek Norvid, remembers the chance meeting in ‘88, between himself and Newcastle

the collection,” he says. RPM Music was born. Fast-forward a few years, after download challenges and a credit crunch; in 2007 an independent record store owner from San Francisco had an idea. Having become completely disenchanted with the record industry’s high handed neglect of independent stores, he persuaded seminal artists and labels to release limited-run vinyl editions of sought-after recordings.

These were only to be sold by independent shops on one day of the year. That day has created a global phenomenon, which we now know as Record Store Day. RPM Music is at the forefront of celebrating Record Store Day in Newcastle (on Saturday 21 April this year). Up to 700 limited editions will be available in-store only on Record Store Day. The day consists of live bands in the courtyard, DJs in the shop, refreshments, give-aways, discounts and of course, the unique opportunity to buy exclusive records. RPM was quick to react to the looming resurgence of vinyl. So with that in mind, as well as selling thousands of old and new vinyl records, RPM now offers a huge selection of re-conditioned record players from the 70s and 80s. The good stuff! So the wheel has finally turned. From vinyl, via cassette, CD, video and DVD back to vinyl. 30 years young and still ‘beats workin’.
