FRESH FROM THE PRESS SONGS FROM THE BIG CHAIR

@NewcastleNE1

Independent retail is an enduring interest of mine. Sitting alongside the important big-brand nationals, the role played by the independent sector is really significant in making a city feel like the kind of place you want to spend time in - exploring, trying things out and making chance discoveries. In Newcastle, I love that I can get my morning coffee fix from Camera Coffee on Collingwood St, they know what I want almost before I’ve opened the door! It’s the same at Paradiso, tucked away on Market St, where I know I can order a flavourful carbonara for lunch, whether it’s on the menu that week or not! And when it comes to clothing, Leaf is the place where I’ll start. The opening of MotelOne has had a transformational effect on High Bridge. That’s where you’ll find Op&Tom for eyewear and my all-time favourite (very) small restaurant, Kaltur. Who’d have guessed an academic at Northumbria Uni would also run a fab tapas place? That’s what’s so great about independent retail. It helps give a city character and encourages just wandering about. Did you know there’s a record store, 586 Records, on the third floor of Commercial Union House on Pilgrim St? You’re unlikely to find it by accident – but I promise you it’s well worth seeking out… Go explore, there’s still more to discover in Newcastle!

INDIAN BUSINESS DELEGATION

We’re celebrating the achievements of one of our favourite city centre hangouts this season! Our iconic, 80-year-old Tyneside Cinema has won a prestigious Royal Television Society North East and Border Centre award! The historical, boutique cinema received The Centre Award for an outstanding contribution to the film and television industry in the last 12 months, in recognition of their success in supporting and developing the next generation of filmmakers in the region. tynesidecinema.co.uk

In partnership with Invest Newcastle, NE1 hosted 15 high ranking, IT business delegates from Chandigarh, India on a two day visit to Newcastle. The aim of the trip was to encourage greater investment, trade and export between Newcastle, the North East and India, providing information and advice to Indian delegates about the potential for setting up business in the region and the support available for trade and exports. newcastlene1ltd.com

MMM… AND GLUG…

We’ve found the best place to buy craft beer in the region, and it’s in NE1! mmm… and glug… on Grainger Street came out on top for the North East and Cumbria in the RateBeer.com awards. This craft beer paradise in the centre of town celebrates its 10th birthday in May, after moving to its 1,500 square foot Grainger Street store in late 2017 from the Grainger Market. As well as serving over 300 different bottles and cans on its shelves, the store sells small producer wines, spirits and a wealth of international food ingredients. It really is the place to be if you’re into your tastes and your tipples. facebook.com/mmmnewcastle

VANS COMES TO TOWN

Our favourite ‘off the wall’ shoe brand has opened its doors in NE1 this month! The skater-themed shoe company’s first Newcastle store is ready for business on Blackett Street, bringing new business and forward-thinking fashion to the city centre. Many major fashion brands are popping up across the city, cementing its position as the North East’s number one retail destination. The launch event on Saturday 10th March saw the store filled with happy shoppers as DJs and live music played out alongside games, gifts and prizes! vans.co.uk

GREAT EXHIBITION OF THE NORTH

This summer, we’ll see NE1 in the cultural spotlight as the Great Exhibition of the North comes to town from 22nd June - 9th September 2018. This inspiring, city-wide exhibition celebrates great art and culture, design and innovation from across the North of England. Highlights from the 80-day programme include: a Great North Soundtrack curated by broadcaster, Lauren Laverne; the return of Stephenson’s Rocket; and a new solo exhibition from Turner Prize 2017 winner, Lubaina Himid. The Great Exhibition of the North is free to attend and will tell the inspiring story of the North of England and how its innovators, businesses, artists and designers have shaped our present and are enthusing our future. Culture vultures will start their journey at one of three iconic venues - Great North Museum, BALTIC and Sage Gateshead - before joining three interconnected trails (The Innovation Trail, The Arts Trail and The Design Trail) through 30 world-class venues and public spaces on either side of the Tyne. getnorth2018.com

GOING PLACES WITH GAINFORD GROUP Gainford Group is spreading its wings across the city this season with two new NE1 ventures. The first is a collection of luxurious city centre apartments in the heart of Newcastle’s historic Grainger Town. The 22 luxurious apartments in the County Aparthotel offer city chic living boasting bespoke interior design and a stunning penthouse apartment with panoramic views of Newcastle and beyond. The impressive new apartments will be open and ready for booking by summer 2018. The second Gainford Group development everybody is talking about is the new state-of-the-art hotel and leisure project providing an exciting new gateway into the city centre. The former Premier Inn on Newbridge Street will become a four-star hotel, spa and fitness centre as well as a hub of bars, restaurants, meeting spaces and gardens. Work will start this year, with completion by late 2019. gainfordgroup.com

THE UNION ROOMS

The Union Rooms site on Westgate Road is set to undergo an exciting renovation and we’ve got a glimpse of the future plans. The owners of the region's San Lorenzo restaurants have taken over the iconic listed building and plan to refurbish the site with hotel bedrooms and a bar. The renovation will be completed in two phases with works to the bar taking place in around six months and the hotel launching in 2019. In the meantime, the bar will be open as normal. Pop in and get up to date with the exciting plans! unionrooms.co.uk

NEWCASTLE POCKET PARK STEPHENSON MONUMENT

Work to transform the area around Stephenson's Monument into an urban 'pocket park' will get underway this April thanks to Newcastle City Council and NE1. The new space will create a relaxing away-from-it-all environment in the heart of the city, featuring seating, planting and paving. The designs have been developed by Southern Green with support from Northumbrian Water. newcastlene1ltd.com

I want to blend in after the show with the crowd in Filthy’s. Best Tyneside moment? A couple stand out. Back in the day we came up on a weekend football tour when I played for Bolton Hospitals FC. I remember we stayed on Jesmond Road and had the best ever night out on the town and met some fantastic people. My second is when I hosted 'Chain Letters' which was filmed at Tyne Tees TV and I was on Tyneside for weeks and totally loved the whole experience.

Dave Spikey is at the Tyne Theatre & Opera House this Thursday and he’s juggling on a motorbike... well, kind of! From a career in the NHS, to a talent show winner and a comedy hero, he's switched off his microscope and he’s ready to share his talents with the people of NE1.

Favourite Geordie? Bit predictable, but it's got to be Gazza. I love my football. I visited the National Football Museum recently and in there they describe him as "the most naturally gifted English midfielder of his generation". But he was more than that wasn’t he? He was funny, immensely likeable and passionate about the game; he wore his heart on his sleeve.

They’ve kept me grounded over the years. I’d say “Hey I’m doing Parkinson with Paul McCartney and Keira Knightley...” and they’d give me that look, you know, the one that says, “Will you listen to yourself?” And I’m like, “Oh aye, right - so who’s on at darts?” Tell us a fun fact? I worked as a Biomedical Scientist in Haematology in our wonderful NHS for 32 years. I left work on Friday 13 October 2000 and the following week I was on a makeshift stage in a club car park in the rain singing Walking On Sunshine dressed as a giant berry while a 20 foot phallic bouncy castle inflated behind me. THE NORTH EAST’S VERY OWN ALANA WALLACE TAKES ON MULTIPLE ROLES IN THE PRODUCTION OF FAST & FURIOUS LIVE AT THE METRO RADIO ARENA.

Alana Wallace COMES HOME...

First time on the Toon? I grew up in Morpeth, so I’m a very proud Geordie! Wherever I go in the world, when people hear my accent, they're always full of compliments about the lovely reputation of us Northerners, which always warms my heart. Best Tyneside moment? One of my fondest and proudest moments from my childhood was when I was in the play ‘Closer’ at the People’s Theatre in 2007. Also, I trained up at a fantastic full-time theatre school ‘Sage Academy of Performing Arts’ in Byker and I have some of the best memories from that time in my life. I received great training and had a brilliant time.

Favourite Geordie? All of my family! Tell us a fun fact? When I was just 11 years-old I was the biggest Destiny's Child fan and I heard they were coming to the Metro Radio Arena. I did some digging and found out the exact date tickets were going on sale and I made my parents drive me through to the box office at the arena at 4am. I queued up in the freezing cold until tickets went on sale at 9am and I was over the moon when I got tickets five rows from the front! It's amazing to think I'm going to be on that same stage! metroradioarena.co.uk

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE UNSUNG HEROES OF NE1…

We all see them going about their every day duties in NE1, but we bet you don't know everything our Street Rangers do for the city and its people. The team in bright blue jackets go above and beyond to keep the city at its very best. Their main goal is to help both visitors and the people of NE1 get the most from our city by keeping on top of everything from everyday maintenance and a bit of business TLC, to event preparations and working with emergency services. From repairing street lights and cleaning up public spaces, to assisting visitors and chatting to locals, their job is to make Newcastle an enjoyable, clean and safe place to be. Our trusty team of Street Rangers are here to help both businesses and members of the public in and around the city centre. Friendly, approachable and great to have around, they’re a real asset to our city and deserve all the credit they get! The Street Rangers are our eyes, our ears, our friends and our heroes. They really do make the streets of Newcastle a better place for everyone! Remember that snow we had a few weeks ago? Well, our team were out taming the Beast at 7am each morning making the city a safer place for people to get to work. Fancy getting involved? Team NE1 are looking for Ranger Volunteers who will support Street Rangers and Clean Team-ers during the busy summer months. Anyone interested in volunteering (over 18s only) get in touch: pam.carefull@newcastlene1ltd.com

SHOUT OUT TO SCOTT

One of our Street Rangers, Scott Sum and his colleague, Rich McLean saved a life in December last year, performing CPR after a man had collapsed in the street. Just weeks later, Scott again stepped into the breach when he apprehended two shoplifters and held them until police arrived to arrest them. All NE1 Street Rangers are trained in first aid and continue to help keep our city a safe place to live, work and enjoy.

Geordie gifts MEHA HINDOCHA IS THE TALENT BEHIND MEHA ART. HER NEWCASTLE LANDMARK ILLUSTRATIONS ARE AVAILABLE TO BUY AT FENWICK.

NE1: Why a Newcastle collection? MEHA: Newcastle has been on my list of ‘must-draw’ places for a while now. I’ve had so many requests from existing customers asking me to visit the city – as well as people saying they’d love to own a piece of Meha Art and that for them, it’d have to be an illustration of Newcastle. I worked with Fenwick last year to finally

realise the dream, and they stocked my Newcastle range as part of their Christmas offering.

NE1: What was it that inspired you to illustrate the city’s landmarks? MEHA: The sights, the people and the everyday life. I got the feeling from people that had visited or grown-up in Newcastle that it was another very unique place that I needed to capture with my work. NE1: Your favourite NE1 landmark to doodle?

GOOD GRIEF JORDAN BROOKES ‘BODY OF WORK’

NE1: Where can we buy your lovely products? MEHA: You can purchase items from the Newcastle range at Fenwick as well as from our website. mehaart.com.
