Having spent two years away from working in the city centre, I am absolutely thrilled to return to Newcastle to take up a role with NE1 as Bigg Market Project Manager. As an early morning person, one of the things I have missed the most is watching the city wake up and seeing the commitment and dedication of our city centre workers, not to mention the odd party goer from the night before! There really is no city like Newcastle and it comes as no surprise to me that Rough Guides named it their no.1 place to visit, proclaiming 2018 is “Newcastle’s time to shine”. And what a year we have in prospect, from the Great Exhibition of The North to the NE1 Motor Show, there really is so much to do and enjoy over the coming months. As a music lover, I am especially looking forward to the array of exciting live acts gracing the city over the next few months and my shout for a “do not miss” would be Jungle at the Boiler Shop in May - I’ve got my ticket! As well as a jam-packed events calendar, there are a number of exciting capital projects underway including Stack Newcastle, White Hart Yard and of course, the Heritage Lottery Funded regeneration of the Bigg Market, which will certainly be keeping me busy! What a time to be back in the city I love! ALEX SLACK BIGG MARKET PROJECT MANAGER

Yazdan Qafouri (second from the left) is from the North East and is one fifth of Five to Five - the winners of BBC’s Let It Shine. He will be starring in The Band, the brand new musical featuring the music of Take That. The show will be playing at the Theatre Royal until Saturday 14 April. The Band is the fastest selling musical tour of all time, snap up your tickets now because you never forget being sixteen!

Have you brought your coat? Yes, I’ve brought my coat; and a hat, scarf and gloves. Not forgetting an umbrella! Best Tyneside moment? Probably performing at the Sage. It was a very proud moment for me! Favourite Geordie? Not quite a Geordie, but Rowan Atkinson was from the North East, right? He is an inspiration of mine. NE1 plans? Introducing everyone to the wonders of the 'parmo' and having one every night while I'm in town! What would you be doing if you weren’t here now? I think I'd be at drama school in London training to be an actor. Fun fact? I once wanted to be a Buddhist monk, didn’t end up going down that path though. In fact, I'm probably doing the complete opposite now! Get tickets to see The Band at the Theatre Royal from £19.50. theatreroyal.co.uk

Q+a Patrick Monahan is in the Toon this Sunday to share his brand new stand up show with a North East audience. Inspired by his Irish/Iranian/Teesside teens in the 90s, he explores what life was like for teenagers growing up with basic technology. First time on the Toon? Every time I perform in the Toon it feels like me first time 'cos you always get a good mix of regulars and new people. Have you brought your coat? Yes 100%! I’m originally from Teesside, so I know about wearing coats and always layering up! Best Tyneside moment? Doing the Great North Run, then being given a massive bag of jelly babies at the end to get me sugar levels back up! Favourite Geordie? Cheryl Cole, mainly 'cos me missus does a great impression of her. NE1 plans? I always like to have a walk around town. There’s sometimes a market on, so good to grab some treats and snacks. And then a nice hot soup in Greggs, even when it’s the middle of summer - you can’t beat a nice soup and doughnut in Newcastle. What would you be doing if you weren’t here now? I’d be in a cake shop or a Greggs looking for a sugary treat. A fun fact? You can fit 300 sloths in a standard lift, but you can’t fit a giraffe in one. Although to be a fair, a giraffe wouldn’t need to go up in a lift, it can just stick its head up to have a look and leave. thestand.co.uk

Meet the NE1 team NE1 IS HOME FOR ME… I was born and bred in Gateshead, I moved to Newcastle a few years ago and became an official Geordie.

SUNDAY BEST

MY ROLE AT NE1 HQ IS… Team Supervisor, so I look after the running of the team when needed. MY JOB HELPS… make the city a cleaner, safer and more interesting place to visit. I want to help make Newcastle the ultimate UK go-to city and hopefully the world! THE NE1 RE-ELECTION WOULD MEAN… we will be able to continue increasing the footfall in and around Newcastle, keep providing our great services and projects such as the City Marina, the Quayside Seaside, Alive after Five and many more! THERE HAVE BEEN SO MANY UNIQUE EXPERIENCES FOR ME… that I wouldn’t know where to start, but being able to view the city from the top of Grey’s Monument will be a hard one to beat, the views from up there are amazing! MY JOB VARIES SO MUCH… from cleaning up after the night before, removing graffiti, jet washing chewing gum off our pavements; to setting up NE1 events such as Screen on the Green and helping tourists find their way around the city. The list is endless, we are definitely kept busy! THE BEST BIT IS… the staff. They are what makes the job what it is, we are a varied bunch of people and the team are a great laugh to be around, always guaranteed to make you smile. WHEN I’M NOT DOING MY NE1 THING I AM… I love a spot of camping and I hit the gym on a regular basis. After all, I need to look good for my main hobby as an entertainer for my role as part of a group called Average Geordies. IF I WON THE GEORDIE JACKPOT… I’d love to go and buy a yacht, as it’s my lifelong ambition to live on a boat. Maybe even bring it up to Newcastle City Marina on a weekend and take in the Quayside nightlife. A QUICK MESSAGE FOR THE PEOPLE OF NE1… Wey aye. Live life to the full, follow your dreams and accomplish every goal you set yourself. You have one life, make the best of it. Peace out fellow Geordies and citizens of the world!

We suggest you go all out with a three-course feast; starting with the roast tomato, crème fraiche and basil soup or the chicken wings smothered in a mouthwatering BBQ sauce. Every last slurp of the chunky soup is scooped up with a wedge of fresh bread, while the finger-lickin’ chicken wings go down a treat. A traditional chicken dinner and a pork belly roast perfectly satisfies the Sunday lunch craving. Other main course options include a seasonal salmon dish and carrot and goats cheese risotto. Vegans and vegetarians are also catered for with tailored Sunday roast options. You’re sure to get the full works here. The roast dinners come served with creamy mash, cauliflower cheese, roasted vegetables, good-for-you greens and Yorkie puds, topped with the tastiest gravy in the Toon. The pork dish has the addition of stuffing and perfectly crisp crackling. A Sunday roast is perfectly finished with something sweet - it’s a rule of life! We share the wholesome sticky toffee pudding with salted caramel and vanilla ice cream, as well as the refreshing ice cream and sorbet selection to cool off after a hearty roast dinner. One-course £9, two-course £13 and three-courses £17. thegiraffelounge.co.uk

You may have noticed a crunching underfoot as you walked around town recently. It wasn't from broken glass shards left by boisterous Bigg Market boulevardiers, but chewed fingernail remnants from Newcastle supporters undergoing their now annual battle against relegation. Spring is nature's re-awakening, a time for looking forward to sunnier days, optimism rising with the gradually increasing temperatures. The opposite is true for us supporters. Spring is hell. The cups a distant memory, and only seven or eight bum clencher fixtures to 'look forward' to. At times like these, you look for leadership, as at any large institution; someone who inspires and commands the respect to overcome difficulties. We clearly have the manager for this day-to-day, but when you have an owner with less sightings than Halley's comet, as a supporter you wonder what you're going to wake up to the next day. The Clash's 1982 'Should I Stay or Should I Go' is almost perfect for our match day theme; about a failing relationship, it has the protagonist in a quandary. There is no quandary from supporters, the second part please. By the time you read this, a couple or three more matches will have passed, and I'll risk a prediction. Having beaten Huddersfield, we'll draw at Leicester to make us safe for this season, but frankly if I was any use at predictions I'd be writing this on my private island with a quill from the wings of a golden Phoenix courtesy of the Lottery, so don't quote me on it. If the worst happens then 'London Calling' from the Clash will be on the club turntable for our owner, and it wont be him singing it. blackadderboy@yahoo.co.uk
