5 MINUTES WITH DALISO CHAPONDA
Britain’s Got Talent finalist and stand-up comedian, Daliso Chaponda is in NE1 for a side-splitting night of comedy at the Tyne Theatre & Opera House. First time on the Toon? I have no idea what this slang term means. Are you implying I will enter some alternate reality? I have had an entry level course in some Geordie terms - I’ve got as far as ‘pet’ and ‘howay’, but they did not cover ‘Toon’. If you are asking if it's my first time in Newcastle though, the answer is no! I’ve been a bunch of times performing at lovely little comedy clubs like The Stand and the dearly departed Hyena. Have you brought your coat? Coat, scarf, gloves - three layers! I am an African man. I can't handle your icy wasteland. Best Tyneside moment? After a show, we all went to a heavy metal battle of the bands. I stuck out A) because I was the only black person in the room and B) because I was wearing the suit I had put on for my show. Everyone else in the venue was in ripped jeans, dripping in piercings and tattoos. All the bands kept approaching me, only later did we figure out that they must have seen my suit and assumed I was from a music label. Favourite Geordie? Sarah Millican - always brightens my day! NE1 plans? I don't do much pre-show. No touristy jaunts for me. Post-show however, PAAARTAAAY! Maybe we can find a battle of the bands... A fun fact? I have written 18 jokes about Donald Trump this year -18!!! He has beaten the Robert Mugabe record. tynetheatreandoperahouse.uk

It is Rugby League’s Summer Party with fans and families from all clubs mixing in the stadium and around the North East all having a great time and enjoying what the region has to offer. How does it feel to be back on Tyneside for the weekend? Amazing. We always knew that Newcastle was a perfect city for the Dacia Magic Weekend. With its party reputation and the people of the North East being so welcoming and friendly - and also appreciating top quality sport and entertainment. And St James’ Park is so central to everything the city has to offer. NE1 memories? I have been in the North East since I was a student in the early 90s. My kids have been born here and are now growing up as Geordies. I have worked at both Newcastle Falcons and Durham County Cricket Club where I was lucky enough to be involved when both organisations won trophies and had sell-out crowds. Favourite city centre spot? I am a big fan of Olive & Bean for a coffee and cake. As a family, we love a Sunday morning at the Quayside Market. Plus on 19-20 May it will be St James’ Park for the Dacia Magic Weekend! Favourite Geordie? My two daughters!

In her brand-new show, she asks us, ‘what’s the hurry?’. People have stopped asking her what she’s going to be when she grows up, and instead want to know when she is going to settle down. She tells us her glorious life story and all the fun and obstacles that come with it... don’t miss it! thestand.co.uk

BEHIND THE SCENES
Meet the NE1 team
with partnering organisations (police, council etc.) to improve the city’s street environment and to work with city centre businesses on their projects and issues. MY JOB MAKES A DIFFERENCE BECAUSE… all the projects I/we get involved in are aimed to make the city safer, more attractive, more vibrant and more convenient for businesses and I’M NOT ORIGINALLY FROM NE1… users. This, very importantly, includes me getting but I’d consider myself an adopted Geordie my hands dirty and getting involved in some not having lived here for 19 years! I grew up in so pleasant things, so others don’t have to! Edinburgh and my dad’s side of the family is from the Middle East. THE NE1 RE-ELECTION WOULD MEAN… I would like to think it means a lot to our MY ROLE AT NE1 HQ IS… businesses. We’re a team that’s committed to to manage some of NE1’s fantastic projects (the improving our great city and always looking best ones obviously!) - including the Quayside after the interests of our businesses. And, Seaside, Newcastle City Marina and our fab Street unfortunately, if we weren’t here then all of our Team. A key part of my role is also to work closely projects (like this mag) and services aren’t here
Ta riq Alba ssa m H ea d of Operatio ns
too - which I think would be a real shame.
MY MOST MEMORABLE MOMENTS AT NE1 INCLUDE… I’ve had unique experiences like welcoming the American Ambassador (earlier this year), building the Quayside Seaside and growing Newcastle City Marina. I get a real buzz out of helping businesses and sorting issues out for them. A DAY IN THE LIFE OF ME… fortunately this isn’t easy as every day is different (very cliché, but true). Calls and emails are constantly coming in and requests can vary and be very random. Everything is always either very important or needs to be done ASAP so managing my time, and prioritising jobs, is extremely important. The one must is checking to make sure all the projects I work on (Quayside Seaside, Relaxation Station, Newcastle City Marina,
Street Team etc.) are running as planned. THE BEST BIT IS… helping a business with an issue or a project. Businesses are busy spending time on their own business so don’t often have the time to do other things. This is where I come in – I try to take the pressure (and time) off their team so they can get on with their day to day operations. WHEN I’M NOT DOING MY NE1 THING I AM… I love spending time with family and friends, a lot of which will be in the city centre, which feels like work sometimes because I’m constantly on the phone talking about work jobs (much to the annoyance of the mrs)! IF I WON THE GEORDIE JACKPOT… It’s a boring answer but probably work on our house and a nice holiday for the family.
A last chance at love before the sun comes up...
