Being one of the NE1 Street Rangers I know from experience the summer is always an exciting time with all the events taking place in the City. Magic Weekend 2018 was again a great success and over the 2 days we saw spectators visiting the city to watch the matches from across England and also from destinations as far afield as France, Spain and even Canada showing that our city has a truly global appeal! As the Ranger who looks after the Bigg Market, the redevelopment project is something I’m particularly looking forward to and excited to be getting involved with – from the look of the plans and pictures of the area when it’s finished it looks sure to be a huge improvement and one which I’m sure will see the Bigg Market become a better and busier area for all the people who visit! Finally from one market to another then the Grainger Street Farmers Market starts in June and I love all of the original produce available and is a great opportunity to support the hardworking farmers in the North East so don’t forget to go and fill your fridges! BIG THINGS FOR THE
Bigg Market
YOU MAY HAVE SEEN THE BUILDERS ON SITE, BUT WHAT’S HAPPENING DOWN AT THE BIGG MARKET? NE1 IS LEADING THE WAY ON AN EXCITING PROJECT BRINGING BIG THINGS TO NEWCASTLE’S BIGG MARKET! Our visions come to life as work gets underway to transform the city’s iconic Bigg Market into a permanent four-level terrace area for market stalls and street furniture. The development will create a sociable space for generations of the future to meet and enjoy the bustling city centre. Alongside funding partners, Newcastle City Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund, Team NE1 are delighted to deliver this amazing transformation in the heart of the city. We’re thrilled that our project to pump £3.2m into a total transformation of the Bigg Market has officially begun with contractors now onsite and hard at work! Within six months, this once-beautiful and historic area of the city will be revitalised, and the improvements to the public areas
of the Bigg Market will complement over £40m-worth of investment from businesses in the surrounding areas. So what’s in the pipeline? The plan is to bring an unloved area of the city back to life, changing its reputation and creating social outdoor spaces for people to sit back, relax and enjoy this bustling area of town. Things will be moving quickly down at the Bigg Market. You’ll see improved lighting, the decluttering of public areas and more green spaces for businesses, locals and visitors to enjoy. Sitting in a historical corridor between Central Station and Grey Street, the Bigg Market boasts some of the city’s finest businesses and holds some serious heritage. The development team will keep history and heritage at the
forefront of everything they do by respecting the area's 31 listed buildings, nurturing new business and helping longstanding businesses thrive. The Bigg Market will be buzzing from day to night; with public spaces perfect for enjoying a bit of al fresco lunch, and new nightlife ventures taking shape such as Revolución de Cuba. NE1’s Alex Slack is project managing the Bigg Market rejuvenation. He says: “It’s fantastic to see this vision come to life. The Bigg Market is an untapped jewel in Newcastle’s crown and now is a great time to bring people back to this area of the city with new public spaces, outdoor eating areas and big plans to transform
GET INTO NEWCASTLE // 13
the way the market is used once the public realm is complete.” It’s important to note that whilst developments are underway, businesses will be open as usual with minimal disruption. So from Flares to Filthy’s, and from Kafeneon to Bier Keller, all of your favourite Bigg Market hangouts will have their doors wide open throughout the summer months. Stay tuned on the Get into Newcastle website for big event and pop-up plans in the pipeline. Our aim is to transform the way the Bigg Market is used once the public realm is complete. This is the start of something huge - bringing a well-known area of town back to life. Yet another reason to go out and enjoy our spectacular city! newcastlene1ltd.com

There are tons of tasty pizzerias and Italian spots in NE1, serving up slices of the good stuff; but what we love about Pizza Storm is that you get to pop your chef’s hat on for a moment and create your own cheesy masterpiece! This grab-and-go spot is great for a midshopping pizza feast or a place to hang out with your pals over your deliciously designed, doughy treat, so that's what we did! Pizza Storm’s perfectly formed sourdough base can be topped with whatever sauce, cheese, veg, meat and seasonings you fancy. It’s

time to get creative with your taste buds. Why not mix it up with toppings you’d never find on a set menu? For diners who prefer to be told what to eat, signature pizzas (£6.55) include: the Loaded Cheese Feast, The Dirty Mighty Meaty, Vegetable Supreme, Smokey BBQ Chicken, Chicken Caesar and the Decadence. But if you wish to make the most of the create-your-own concept, there are all kinds of flavours you can experiment with. We opt for the spicy tomato base with a mix of Red Leicester and mozzarella cheese. Our veggie options come in the form of mushrooms, courgetti, baby spinach, red jalapeños and red onion. We go all-out meat feast with lashings of chargrilled chicken, spicy beef, chorizo and bacon. Our perfectly packed pizza goes down wonderfully with a mac and cheese side dish, topped with bacon (£3.95) and loaded potato wedges (£2.75). Bottomless soda (£2.55) keeps us hydrated throughout the pizza-fuelled feast. Go here if you fancy experimenting with pizza! pizzastorm.pizza

Miss Newcastle 2018
CELEBRATING LOCAL TALENT AND CONTRIBUTING TO LOCAL CHARITIES
Miss Newcastle is more than just a beauty pageant. It’s a celebration of our incredible city and the people within it, with the main aim of raising money for The Chronicle Sunshine Fund - providing equipment for children with disabilities in the North East. Returning for its 11th year, our friends at Gainford Group are delighted to be hosting the event in the heart of the city, at the luxurious County Hotel on Friday 1 June 2018. This year’s Miss Newcastle Final moves away from the traditional beauty pageant, providing businesses with an opportunity to raise vital funds for local charities, with help from the
competition finalists. The event, in association with Tyne Tees Models, is a true celebration of style, beauty and talent; drawing inspiration from the Middle East with the theme of ‘a magical journey into Arabian Nights’. Prior to the Miss Newcastle Final, 10 finalists are chosen in various heats hosted across the region by event sponsors. Individually, each contestant must raise as much money as they can for the charity in the lead up to the glamorous black tie event. Finalists will be judged by industry professionals and the Miss Newcastle 2018 winner will receive a place in the Miss England Final as well as a contract with Tyne Tees Models. Guests are invited to enjoy a luxurious evening
of high fashion, entertainment and delicious cuisine in support of The Sunshine Fund this June at the County Hotel. Last year’s contestants brought in almost £10,000 for the charity, and Gainford Group hope to top that number again this year. Miss Newcastle is one of the biggest events in the North East calendar. It educates, celebrates and continues to raise funds as businesses come together to celebrate. The show offers more than meets the eye. It’s about local businesses teaming up to make a difference through charity work, as well as celebrating some of the incredibly talented women in our region. Miss Newcastle has been a great platform for contestants who have gone on to carve successful careers. Previous winners include
