It would be impossible to look forward to this fortnight in Newcastle without focusing on the fact that this Friday finally brings the opening of the Great Exhibition of the North. I will certainly be watching from the Quayside as the fountain in the Tyne is switched on, and I have my (free) tickets booked to see Stephenson’s Rocket on Saturday too! I have signed up as a volunteer for the Exhibition, so I am greatly looking forward to starting to welcome our visitors from near and far to Newcastle to celebrate and showcase the North of England. One thing I am hoping for is some sunshine to enjoy all the amazing events that are going on in the city this summer – however as it’s nearly Wimbledon, I am not sure if my wish will be fulfilled! But whatever the weather, I will be settling down with my strawberries in an NE1 deckchair as we kick off Screen on the Green with some great tennis action - I can’t wait! WHAT'S ON IN NE1

Summer Season The NE1

at a glance

SEE WHAT’S ON IN NE1 THIS SUMMER AS THE SUN SHINES DOWN ON OUR SENSATIONAL CITY…

T

hinking back to 10 years ago, it’s difficult to imagine how much Newcastle’s summer events season would grow, into the relentless assault on the senses it is now. Kicking-off the summer season every year, the Quayside Seaside ‘pops-up’ in April, waking us from our winter slumber and reminding us all that yes, the drizzle will pass, the sunshine will come, and that we shall soon be sitting on the Quayside, toes in sand, gazing out on one of the most iconic riverfront views of any of the UK’s waterfront cities. It remains in-situ till the end of October so, even with our wonderfully unpredictable climate, there should be plenty of opportunity to pull up a deck chair and while away the hours. Next out of the blocks is NE1’s very own Screen on the Green which takes up its annual residency in Old Eldon Square with its packed programme of free film screenings and major sporting events such as Wimbledon. This year, and due to popular demand, the screen is in for nine weeks and there are 30% more films than ever before. As you would expect, Newcastle Pride is one of the most colourful and vibrant events in Newcastle’s summer programme and every year, continues to grow as a celebration of all things LGBTQ+. In a new home on Nuns Moor, this year’s event is set to be the biggest and best yet with performances from the Vengaboys, Alexandra Burke and S Club. As headline sponsors for the past five years, NE1 couldn’t be happier with the event and what it says about this great city. Not to rest on our laurels, the NE1 Newcastle Motor Show will take over the

city centre on the 4 and 5 August. With an expanded fanzone, more space and of course, even more of the world’s finest vehicles. Over the forthcoming weeks and months we will be releasing more details but be prepared to ‘set face to stun’ as we are about to drop some amazing news. With barely time to rest your head and recover from the Motor Show, Newcastle Restaurant Week starts on Monday 6 August. Running for seven days, Newcastle’s finest restaurants are already working hard on their menus to tempt you off the couch and away from the microwave for one week of culinary delights. Starting seven years ago with 13 restaurants, we now have over 100 participating restaurants so whether you’re a pescetarian, vegan, a fan of steaks or just really love a good spicy curry, we have got you covered. Remember, the event brings in over 50,000 people during the week, so don’t forget to book early. Oh, and to top it all off, this great city is hosting what is billed to be England’s biggest event in 2018; the Great Exhibition of the North. The event kicks-off on the Friday 22 June, and runs for 80 days, culminating in the closing ceremony on the 9 September, which dovetails nicely with the Great North Run. With a summer programme like this, the number one shopping destination in North East England, our famous nightlife and more restaurants per capita than any other city outside of London, why would you want go anywhere else this summer! STEPHEN PATTERSON DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS

THOMAS COOK AIRLINES QUAYSIDE SEASIDE UNTIL 8 OCTOBER

Delivered by NE1 for the eighth year, you can take a trip to the seaside without leaving the city this summer thanks to our beautiful beach on the Costa del Tyne. We can’t think of a better place to kick back and take in some rays as the city comes to life this summer. The pop-up beach is back with its deck chairs, beach huts, sweeping palm trees and a fab new playground to entertain the little ones. A trip to the seaside isn’t complete without glorious grub that screams summer. This year, visitors can grab a bite to eat at The Little Fishy, serving fish and chips and fish finger sandwiches as well as cajun cod and halloumi fries. Throughout the summer there will be an exciting programme of events and activities on and around the Quayside Seaside. Don't forget to make memories with an Insta-worthy snap on our giant deckchair featuring friendly Sid the Shark! getintonewcastle.co.uk/ne1-events/quayside-seaside

SCREEN ON THE GREEN 2 JULY - 2 SEPTEMBER

Newcastle’s outdoor screenings are a great place to hang out with friends, entertain the kids and catch some straight-off-the-big-screen movies! With more films than ever before, we’re expecting crowds to gather for family sing-a-longs and sporting spectaculars including all the action live from Wimbledon this July. So pull up one of our bright blue NE1 deckchairs, bring your bag of popcorn and chill out on the green this summer! getintonewcastle.co.uk/ne1-events/screen-on-the-green

The Hoppings is back for another summer spectacular bringing family fun and fairground rides to the Town Moor once again! The best-loved Geordie funfair first came to Newcastle 136 years ago as a counterattraction to the boozy goings-on at the annual Race Week at nearby Newcastle Racecourse. It’s back in the city for another year and we can’t wait to check out our favourite rides and some new attractions on the Town Moor. So gather your gang and get your umbrellas at the ready (because everyone knows it always rains when the biggest and best travelling funfair comes to the Toon)! A diary date for the whole family - make a day of it this June! hoppingsfunfairs.com

What's in the name? THE MEANING BEHIND THE ‘HOPPINGS’ Well, several origins have been suggested for the term. Most relate to dancing, while others relate to the clothing worn in the old days - often infested with fleas from the animals travelling with the fairground folk - people were often seen ‘jumping’ or ‘hopping’ around to get them off. The name may also derive from the Anglo-Saxon word ‘hoppen’, meaning funfair!
