With all the months of effort and planning that has gone into Newcastle Pride it’s hard to believe that now it’s just around the corner, at Nuns Moor Park from 20 - 22 July 2018. It’s set to be an amazing weekend with something for everyone, from the Parade making its way through the city centre, to top acts on the Manchester Airport San Francisco Stage and all of the various zones at the festival site. And we’ll be ending the weekend on a point of reflection with our Candlelit Vigil at 9pm on Sunday at Newcastle Civic Centre, remembering those we have lost, and standing in solidarity with those who keep fighting. Behind all the fun of the weekend, Pride still has an important message – one of remembering the past and how far we have come, ensuring that we continue to fight for our community and making sure we celebrate the present moment. The Pride weekend is free to attend so everyone is welcome to join us, grab a rainbow flag and have a fantastic time. See you there! STEPHEN WILLIS FESTIVAL DIRECTOR AT NEWCASTLE PRIDE

27.07.18 FEAST ON FRIDAY

The Shilling A COSY AND CHARMING CITY CENTRE SPOT SERVING CLASSIC COMFORT FOOD We were delighted to hear about the reopening of The Shilling by the Quayside this summer, and we're certainly not disappointed when we check in and tuck into their brand new menu. This is a place that doesn't take itself too seriously. It is cool, quirky, laid-back and combines its traditional decor with eclectic touches and a vibrant new menu. The Shilling boasts a charming spot on Sandhill and its vibrant food and drinks offering includes a few witty twists sure to fill your tums as well as filling your face with smiles! The concept here is simple; classic comfort food, done good! What your mamma made you... with Toon twists and seasonal specials thrown in the mix. We're in for a quick bite to eat during our lunch break - but the starters sounds far too scrumptious to miss. We opt for 'The Biggest Baddest Nachos on the planet' (£6 small, £9 large) and fantastically fiery veggie rolls (£5). The nachos are done properly here - tortilla chips topped with slow cooked

eight-hour beef chilli, smoked cheese, kicking chilli and drizzled with punchy gremolata. The veggie roll is equally as delicious and packed with exquisite flavours. A full-sized, glazed chilli wrapped in sausage roll-style pastry - yum! Other starters include: garlicky mushrooms (£5), bitterballen (£5), ribs (£6 small, £10 large) and soup of the day (£4). More home-cooked deliciousness comes with the main course! First up is the flash steak special (£14.95) - marinated chilli and herb flash steak with crisp 18-hour beef bitterballen and banging mustard mash. Meaty magic on a plate - the steak oozes with chargrilled flavours with hints of spice zipping through, while the creamy mustard mash makes our carby dreams come true! Next it's the North Sea fish and chips (£6.50 small, £11.95 large) - wild haddock fillet, dished up with chunky chips, minted mushy peas and tartare sauce for good measure! The traditional British dish is served without the batter on this occasion, to suit the dietary requirements of our lunch date. Served

in a herby sauce, the flavours perfectly make up for the lack of batter. Other comfort food delights include: Icelandicstyle dog, veggie lasagne and insane garlicky chicken kiev! If you're looking for pub food or a quick bite to eat, expect bacon sarnies, meatball subs, aubergine jacket potatoes and the revolutionary pigs in blankets sandwich Christmas has come early at The Shilling! Something sweet to finish? To-die-for desserts will complete the feast. We had to pass on this occasion, but can't wait to return for our sweet fix and a cocktail or two! facebook.com/theshillingncl

31.07.18 TUESDAY TUNES

PREVIEW: Jersey Boys WE’RE WORKING OUR WAY TO THE THEATRE ROYAL TO JOIN THE JERSEY BOYS IN A TALE OF SUCCESS, STARDOM AND SWEEPING SOPRANOS. This jukebox musical brings the stories of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons to life on stage. It tells the biographical tale of a four New Jersey boys from the wrong side of the tracks looking to make their way in the wonderful world of show business.

The stage show journeys through their rise to stardom. It’s the late 1950s and Tommy DeVito discovers the sweeping falsetto of Frankie Valli. It takes some time, but a moment of musical magnificence is born when keyboardist-songwriter, Bob Gaudio joins the group and The Four Seasons are formed. Finally, it clicks. A quartet of polished and precise, finger-clicking men in dapper suits. A new sound, a new image and an iconic moment in music history. The UK tour’s principal Frankie Valli, Michael Watson, is mesmerising - in everything from his musical notes to his moves and his stage manor. His execution of the role is as accurate as can be – perfectly exposing both his vulnerable side in his early years, as well as his

becoming of a strong man later in life. This stage show is engaging from the off, straight into those much-loved musical numbers including: ‘Big Girls Don’t Cry’, ‘Walk Like a Man’ and ‘December 1963 (Oh What a Night)’. Whether you’re a Frankie Valli fanatic, you favour The Four Seasons or you’re completely new to the story and the songs, this one is sure to have you bopping away to the beats. The soundtrack to an entire generation; it’s a story, a celebration and a peek into life behind the big red curtain. Oh what a night! Tickets from £18. Tuesday 31 July Saturday 11 August 2018. theatreroyal.co.uk
