Here’s to 2019! Perhaps I am just getting older or a little cynical, but I have come to think that January each year is littered with abandoned new year's resolutions - not a pretty sight. So, this year I have resolved (if you forgive the pun) to try a different approach. Recently I read again a wonderful quote from Dag Hammarskjöld, the Swedish economist and the second Secretary General of the United Nations. It reads like this: ‘For all that has been THANKS, for all that will be YES.’ I decided that this year I would simply put this into practice. I will spend a little time being grateful for all the good things that have happened in my life over the last year. I would start with the easy ones of course: the people, the events, the new job, the holidays and the celebrations. But I wouldn’t stop there, and painful as it may feel, I would give thanks for the people who have challenged me and the situations that have pulled on my heart strings and made me act like a better human being. Then I will look confidently ahead and set to making the best of the year ahead, open to the challenges, pleasures, people and situations that will be mine. Just maybe it will be that a change of mindset based on gratitude and openness will be a resolution to keep, for it could change my world for the better. Happy positive New Year to you - whatever it brings. THE VERY REVD GEOFF MILLER DEAN OF NEWCASTLE

WORK IT OUT

What’s new in Newcastle for 2019? A word of advice from BMC Recruitment Group… “2019 is looking like a fantastic time to get that promotion or expand your team. Last year, Newcastle was ranked the top UK city to work and we’re not surprised! At BMC Recruitment, we’ve seen amazing growth in the region in 2018 and this shows no signs of stopping. We work with eight out of 10 of the top 200 employers in the city and we’ve seen an incredible investment into the work force in the region. “Newcastle is in an extremely strong position for the year ahead. Brexit has meant that Newcastle, with its port and airport, has become more attractive due to its proximity with Amsterdam. More companies are relocating north, which means we’re in a great position for growth in regards to the job market. “We’ve seen a boost in employment and growth, working with tech giants, to financial organisations who are rapidly expanding their team. We've also been appointing people from further afield in incredibly prestigious and executive roles, bringing more talent to the area. “Newcastle is becoming a much more attractive place to relocate with its cheaper housing, lower living costs, a greater choice of jobs and strong professional community.” CHRIS MILNES MD BMC RECRUITMENT GROUP
