Chinese New Year is known as ‘chun-jie’ in our language and is one of the most prominent and well celebrated festivals in the world. Just like Christmas in the west, the festival is a time of great joy where families get together to have what is known as the 're-union dinner' and ring in the Chinese New Year celebrations. Like in previous years, our Chinese Festivity Group have organised our own celebrations here in Newcastle on the 10th February. The celebrations will involve dragon dancing and traditional art performances as well as martial arts. The Chinese dragon parade is only one of a number of events and celebrations taking part in Newcastle this Chinese New Year and we hope that more people come into the city, visit Chinatown to witness the spectacle and enjoy the tastes, sights and sounds of the celebrations. I hope the Year of the Pig brings great fortune to the city and all its residents and visitors. For all of you out there who may be getting home-sick or are just interested in getting to know a little bit more about the Chinese culture, all of you are welcome!
