As my time at NE1 comes to an end, I can look back at the past three months of interning experience with a whole host of emotions. Excitement - as I would leave my desk to go and check out a new venue to share on our Instagram. Joy - as I would visit the animated members of the Chinese Festivity Group practising for their Chinese New Year celebration. Confusion - when my first week of organising Newcastle’s Christmas included discussions of festive alpaca and roller skating Christmas presents... I can certainly say I will be leaving having learnt a lot. The most important thing, however, is just how much Newcastle has to offer. A day has not passed without spotting a new event, shop or restaurant that I am desperate to explore. Keep your eyes peeled for the rest of 2019, as city wide events such as the Heineken and Challenge Cup start to take shape. We really are lucky to live and work in the best city in the world! Word on the Street ON THE WORLD STAGE

NE1 NEWBIES

Newcastle’s St James’ Park will be put on a world stage for the Rugby League World Cup 2021 opening ceremony! As one of 28 locations to bid for matches, our city has been successful in the selection to kick-off the tournament - at the home of the Magpies! The rugby fun doesn’t stop there... Newcastle will also host a series of events including a Fan Zone and a 'Festival of Rugby League'. It's safe to say our city is flying high in the world of rugby, after hosting rugby league’s Magic Weekend tournament for four years in a row, three Rugby Union 2015 World Cup games and the upcoming Heineken Champions Cup and European Rugby Challenge Cup, which will be played in the city this May. The successful bid is set to bring £13m to the local economy. What a fixture for NE1! nufc.co.uk

There’s a newbie coming to Newgate Street this year, and foodies of NE1 are in for another tasty treat! The Grade II Listed former Co-op building will soon welcome a new steakhouse, Bar + Block, which is currently under development at the site of the Newgate Street Premier Inn hotel, which opened in 2016. The word on the street is that contractors are due on site anytime now, ready to begin the next phase of construction. We can’t wait to add another delicious hangout to our foodie to-do list. Keep your eyes peeled, folks! barandblock.co.uk

ATLANTIC HEROES

Remember us telling you about Team Tyne Innovation's Atlantic expedition? We're delighted to let you know that on 12 December 2018, they set out on a 3,000 mile race across the Atlantic. Deemed the world’s toughest row, Phil, Claire, Alan and Steve started their journey in La Gomera in the Canary Islands, before making their way across the Atlantic, finishing in English Harbour, Antigua. The team completed the row in just over 42 days, breaking the world record for a mixed sex four crossing - by an amazing14 days! Rowing in shifts of two hours on and two hours off, the ocean heroes repeated this for the entire journey only stopping briefly for a swim on Christmas Eve and once during bad weather! The team are still looking to raise as much money as possible for three local charities: The Stroke Association, St Oswald’s Hospice and Daft as a Brush. To donate and congratulate the Atlantic champions, please visit: teamtyneinnovation.com/support-our-bid/donations

A year ago Dawn went on holiday and joked with her sister who she attends the workshop with that she needed to lose 6lbs at WW that week to lose her holiday gain. One week on at her check in she lost seven pounds in a week and the rest is history! Fast forward a year, she lost five stone, which added to what she had 18/01/19 11:08 AM

already lost with WW makes a whopping eight stone weight loss. Prior to her weight loss, Dawn was a type two diabetic dependent in insulin. Now she requires no insulin whatsoever and soon all her diabetic medications will be stopped. Her blood sugars, which were previously off the scale, are now in a normal healthy range. Her cholesterol has dropped from 5.5 to 3 - which again, now puts her back in a normal healthy range. Dawn has gone from a size 32 to a size 18. She still has three stone left to lose to get to her goal weight, but says that this will be a breeze compared to the weight she has already lost. Dawn feels and looks fabulous. Prior to her weight loss she was unhappy. She puts her success down to the support she receives in class and her fabulous coach, Julie Watson.

5 MINUTES WITH LLOYD GRIFFITH NE1 talks to Lloyd Griffith, ahead of his show, 'All-Rounder', at The Stand this Sunday. “Comedy is essentially a hobby that has got out of hand,” says the comedian, presenter and choirboy! First time on the Toon? No, I love Newcastle. My sister was at uni here so I’ve had many nights out - got drunk in The Mushroom on £6, result! I also used to come see Grimsby play Newcastle when we were in the same league (yes, in the 90s) - and I've supported Jack Whitehall and Rob Beckett on tour up here too. Have you brought your coat? I grew up in Grimsby, so this is a holiday! I'll be wearing a wife-beater and crocs! Best Tyneside moment? Probably supporting Jack Whitehall at the Arena in 2017. What an incredible gig that was! Favourite Geordie? Has to be Sting, surely? What a legend. NE1 plans? Heading to The Mushroom after the gig, obviously. Other than that, try and get to a game if Newcastle are playing. What would you be doing if you weren’t here now? Either a choirboy, or in prison - or both! Fun fact? I sang on the last Bee Gee's Christmas album, and that will never change! Have a proper laugh with Lloyd this Sunday 24 February at The Stand Comedy Club. Tickets: thestand.co.uk
