Spring time has officially sprung in NE1 and as I approach the end of my first month here, I too am beginning to flourish in my new role. Enamoured by what our city has to offer, I’ve so much to look forward to this spring! Firstly, Mother’s Day is a great time for us to celebrate the amazing women in our lives whoever they may be! Whether that female figure is a foodie, a film-buff or a floristry fan, there’s plenty of city delights to ensure only the best for your very special someone. As we say hello to April, we also welcome back our peaceful pop-up park, Grey Street Gathering. Funded by our Geordie Jackpot players, our green haven is back to brighten your morning, noon and night. The spot will be a staple in the city until October, giving us plenty of opportunity to enjoy the blissful retreat on one of NE1’s most iconic streets! With plenty in store to keep a spring in your step, there really is no excuse not to get involved in what our cracking city is serving up this season! GEORGIA HADWIN INTERN

NEW IN NE1

Word on the Street BIG THINGS FOR THE BIGG MARKET

The Bigg Market's newly-refurbished public realm is now complete! The builders are off-site and the area is open to the public, with an exciting series of events scheduled for the spring/summer season ahead. The transformation doesn't stop there though! Building work on the former gentleman’s WC building has started, readying it to be handed over to private owners. As part of NE1’s National Lottery Heritage Fund regeneration project, this historic part of the city will be restored to its former glory, with the Victorian toilet buildings being completely refurbished - with a state-of-the-art glass structure taking centre stage. The building is being renovated for commercial use with new tenants fitting out the interior as an exciting café/wine bar concept. Having delivered new street lighting, additional trees, street furniture and new four-level terraced areas for events and markets in the area with National Lottery Heritage Funding, the NE1 Bigg Market development team are excited for what’s next in the project. Watch this space! ne1biggmarket.co.uk

POP IN FOR A POWER LUNCH

Our chums at Union Rooms are helping professionals power through the day with a brand new (and totally irresistible) lunch offer! Round up your office buddies and make your way to this Westgate Road newbie for their Power Lunch deal - offering a mouthwatering meal deal you simply cannot miss out on. So, what’s on the menu? Dirty fries, battered goujons and vegan pizza are just three of the featured dishes, priced at just £6.50 each. If a good old sandwich is your lunch break fix of choice, you can choose from a range of fillings in either a wrap or brioche bun - including a brekkie club special (all your morning favourites in a bun), or a pig pimpin' (pulled pork perfection)! Sounds delicious, right? Make a date with your work friends and power up your lunch in NE1! unionrooms.co.uk Peter-McArdle-Untitled-(Passing)

INSPIRING IMAGES

We’ve got something exciting news for culture vultures of the North East! Abject Gallery on Market Street is bringing a brand new exhibition to its creative space. Peter McArdle’s body of work explores the relationship between fine art traditions - the nude, the landscape, sculpture and the history of painting - and reconsiders each in the context of the new digital image that now dominates visual culture. His works question what happens when images are taken out of their contexts and find themselves in new cultural and political spaces? The preview for this inspiring showcase takes place on Friday 19th April, 6pm - 9pm, and the exhibition will continue from 20th April until 1st June 2019. There will also be a special late opening as part of The Late Shows 2019 on 18th May, 7pm - 11pm. abject.gallery

POP-UP PARK

GREENING OUR CITY:

Grey Street Gathering returns! LAST SUMMER, NE1’S GEORDIE JACKPOT MADE OUR CITY GREENER AND GREATER WITH THE LAUNCH OF GREY STREET GATHERING. IT’S BACK IN SITU UNTIL OCTOBER AND WE CAN’T WAIT FOR MORE GLORIOUS GREEN DAYS IN THE CITY CENTRE!

Last year, we were delighted to cut the ribbon at our newest pop-up park, Grey Street Gathering. The arrival of this glorious garden in the centre of town meant we could host outdoor fitness classes, workshops and provide a tranquil new space for people to relax and rest their legs when in Newcastle. Grey Street Gathering is the first city centre project paid for by the Geordie Jackpot and will take pride of place on Grey Street once again until October 2019. This cool new space screams fun in the sun and also provides an away-from-it-all retreat in one of the city’s busiest, most beautiful streets; equipped with large planters, special seating areas and exercise sessions such as yoga. What is so great about Grey Street Gathering is it’s love of all things local. Bringing together

local designers, builders and project managers, we’re certain this pocket park will, once again, steal the hearts of the people of the city! The pop-up park is the perfect excuse to get excited about the sunny season in Newcastle! Whether you swing by on your lunch break, rest your legs mid-shopping trip, or meet your yogi chums for an exercise class, it’s a cool new hub for the people of NE1 and beyond to enjoy. To play the Geordie Jackpot and to continue contributing to city centre projects, as well as being in with the chance of winning fab cash prizes and raising funds for local charity, Cash for Kids, you can buy tickets at: geordiejackpot.co.uk. Stay tuned online for more information and upcoming activities at Grey Street Gathering. getintonewcastle.co.uk

03.14.19 WE LOVE WEDNESDAY

NE1 Reviews

A crafty combo

BEERONOMY BLURS THE LINES BETWEEN CRAFT BEER AND CREATIVE CUISINE. TIME FOR A HEARTY FEAST WITH A HOP OR TWO “The versatility of beer knows no culinary bounds,” is the restaurant’s ethos - and boy is it right. Who knew beer and bavette were a match made in heaven? Who’d have thought a stout would bring out the best in your sticky toffee pudding? Whether you’re a craft-beer geek, a real ale aficionado, or you’re new to hops and

hand-pulls, we’re certain you’ll leave this place partial to a bit of palate-pleasing pint-pairing. Whether it's a mid-week munch or a post-work pint, Beeronomy perfectly blurs the lines between a beer with friends and a full-blown feast. What’s not to love? The place is big, bright and airy - and screams craft brewery coolness. Think high ceilings, stripped-back woodwork, metallic decor,

refined rows of hand-pulls and a bold array of bottles on show. A tasty bottle of Timmerman’s cherry whets the palate as we browse the bustling menu which, it's worth noting, very kindly suggests the perfect pint to go with each dish. We kick things off with the masala-spiced scotch egg (£6.75) and the wild mushroom on toast (£6.50), for our veggie chum. The scotch egg is everything it should be and more - a perfectly crisp coating on the outside, with the bright orange yolk of the egg oozing inside. Sitting on a bed of spiced dahl, it’s a great hearty starter to get things started - with a kick of spice for good measure. The wild mushroom on toast is a vibrant veggie option - topped with lemon thyme, charred onions and nasturtiums. The main event brings beer, bavette and beetroot to the table. The soy marinated bavette steak (served pink on this occasion) is a great buy at £13.50, packing in plenty of fire and flavour with black garlic, miso béarnaise and the tastiest triple cooked chips we’ve had! All of this, washed down with a dark lager. The roasted celeriac (£9.95) is a mouthwatering meat-free option to say the least. A cleverly-arranged plate of colourful goodness, topped with pickled shiitake mushrooms, lentils, goat’s curd and beetroot.

GET INTO NEWCASTLE // 17

This green-eating plate of gorgeousness is perfectly paired with an IPA. The beer matching fun doesn’t stop at mains. And it’d be rude not to try the dessert offering! We satisfy our sweet tooth with a sent-fromheaven sticky toffee pud (£5.75) - served with a good scoop of Madagascan bourbon vanilla ice cream. A small mouthful of stout is the perfect companion, leaving us feeling full, content and experts in the field of food and beer pairing. Our dinner date finishes on a fruity high with a cherry and almond Bakewell tart (£5.95), served with a super sweet fruit beer. Food and drink comes hand in hand, and at Beeronomy it’s as much about the food as it is the beer. It’s a place where you can kick back with a pint, but also enjoy a plate of the good stuff. Make sure you check it out - it’s the perfect match for the people of NE1! beeronomy.com

POSTCARD FROM... Cannes ‘Freshly back from a whirlwind visit to MIPIM, the world’s leading property conference with over 26,000 of the leading property and investment professionals, and I’m really excited about team Newcastle and our impact on the event. This year Invest Newcastle took over 30 local partners and more than 60 delegates to Cannes, continuing Newcastle’s growth year on year at this prestigious event. n o rs e It wasn’t just Newcastle though, both tt a Stephen P Gateshead and Durham Councils took part, and launched exciting schemes to an international audience, and we’re thrilled to see the region on the world-stage and selling itself. the highlights from this year’s event for me were the World Wheel company launch (which was hugely well received, and inundated with interest), and Gateshead’s complimentary plans for the Baltic Quarter. It’s a really exciting time for both the city and the wider region, and I think that’s reflected in the amount of interest in the area. It’s essential that we continue to grow the city and the region’s economy by putting ourselves out there, at events such as this, and continue to sell this wonderful city to a wide audience on an international level. Here’s to next year, and who knows what amazing strides we’ll have made in NE1 between now and then!’ STEPHEN PATTERSON DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS
