It’s almost exactly 12 months since I last wrote for the magazine and wow, what a year it’s been! It seems like only five minutes ago, but this time last year we were just about to commence the first phase of the Bigg Market project - the public realm refurbishment. After numerous hoops, hurdles and historical discoveries, the work was finally completed in early 2019. A little behind schedule but thankfully within budget! The result? A brand spanking new public realm complete with modern street lighting, new trees and seating for all ages and abilities. Not to mention a nod to the area’s past with the famous Blaydon Races lyrics adorning the walls. With phase one complete, the focus has now shifted to the buildings within the area and last month brought the very exciting news that work to the much talked about Bigg Market WCs has begun. As well as this, we are thrilled to be delivering the first (of many) events to be held in the area with our Bigg Market Bash taking place on 13th April. It’s looking like another busy year ahead! Word on the Street DIPPY IS HEADING TO THE TOON
STAR SUCCESS FOR TOMAHAWK
From May until October, culture vultures of the North East are in for a treat as the Natural History Museum’s Dippy The Diplodocus heads to the Toon! He’s lived in the capital for over 100 years, but 2019 calls for adventure! Following visits to Dorchester, Birmingham, Belfast and Glasgow, Dippy is on the road again, settling in for a six-month stay in Newcastle. Unveiled to the British public in 1905, Dippy was cast from the type specimen found in America. The full skeleton is 21.3 meters long, 4.3 metres wide and 4.25 metres high. Intriguing, inspiring and unbelievably impressive! greatnorthmuseum.org.uk
If you’re not yet familiar with the huge cow on the Quayside, then maybe it’s time you checked it out! Tomahawk Steakhouse arrived in the Toon just over a year ago and has certainly made an impression - beating 2,700 other pubs and bars to win the ‘Famous For Food’ award at the Star Pub & Bar awards in March. So whether you pop in for the legendary 'Sunday Sharing Board', or you fancy attempting the 'Tomahawk Steak Challenge' to rival the Newcastle Falcons recent visit, there are some seriously delightful dining treats on offer! tomahawk-steakhouse.co.uk

The Newcastle Elite Nocturne Race will be 1km in length, starting and finishing at the iconic Grey’s Monument – passing through Grainger Town, Clayton Street, Nelson Street, the Bigg Market and Nun Street. What a summer for sport in Newcastle – don’t miss it! newcastlene1ltd.com

First time in the Toon? It’s a massive shame to say this is my first time in Newcastle - apart from flying past on a train! Have you brought your coat? I’ve brought a few... I like my jackets anyway! Best Tyneside moment? None in the city, but I’ve been to a few brilliant Man Utd vs Newcastle Utd matches in Manchester. Favourite Geordie? Charlie Hardwick, who I acted alongside for a few years in Emmerdale. A lovely person and a brilliant actress. NE1 plans? Hitting the Toon of course - and having a good look at St James’ Park. What would you be doing if you weren’t here now? Probably one of the above. Fun fact? Like David Bowie, I’ve got one pupil bigger than the other… and I can wiggle my ears! The Full Monty plays Monday 15 – Saturday 20 April 2019, at Newcastle’s Theatre Royal. Tickets are priced from £16.00 and can be purchased at theatreroyal.co.uk.
