Newcastle’s reputation as a destination for major rugby events takes another huge step forward when the city hosts the European Club finals on 10th and 11th May. Starting with the European Challenge Cup final on Friday 10th May, which is a big game in its own right, the pinnacle of the weekend will undoubtedly be the Heineken Champions Cup final on Saturday 11th May. This is the rugby equivalent of football’s Champions League final, and there is no bigger prize in the club game. It is a tournament with which I have a long personal association, having played in the second ever final for Leicester back in 1997 when we took on the mighty French side, Brive. On that occasion we were second best against an outstanding side, but my coaching career saw better fortunes when Leicester Tigers won back-to-back finals in 2001 and 2002, in Paris and Cardiff respectively. Experiencing those incredible atmospheres means I know first-hand what a treat Newcastle has in store, with rugby fans from across the continent descending on Tyneside for a full weekend of enjoyment. Even for those who don’t follow rugby, it will be an incredible few days with a whole host of events. The city will once again showcase its reputation as a vibrant, welcoming destination. Enjoy it! NEW IN NE1

Word on the Street THE GATE’S GLORIOUS GARDEN

This spring, we joined our friends at The Gate for the launch of their new urban garden! Our city has once again pulled its green finger out to create a vibrant new outdoor space for the people of NE1 to enjoy. The Gatekeepers project started back in 2017 in partnership with local charity, Streetwise - supporting the physical, emotional and mental health of young people living in Newcastle. With additional support from the National Trust Green Academies Project and Wildlife Trust, this glorious new space has been brought to life. The garden, located at the Jacobins Chare to the side of The Gate, has been designed, created and will be maintained by local young people working with the National Trust Green Academies Project; and features the first ever biodiversity graffiti wall, as well as planning to create an insect-friendly environment for bees, hover flies and butterflies. Don’t forget to check it out and enjoy a bit of outdoorsy downtime in the city this summer! thegatenewcastle.co.uk

FLOORBOARDS BY STEVE BYRON

ANA POPOVIC

She has been called ‘one helluva guitar player’ by Bruce Springsteen and has been nominated for six Blues Music Awards, and she’s coming to NE1 this May to perform live for a North East audience. The LA-based blues, rock, American, funk and soul singer is sure to wow Geordie audiences with her mesmerising vocals and music-making skills, as she delivers hits from her award-winning albums, ‘Can You Stand The Heat’ and ‘Unconditional’. With special guest support from one of the most exciting young rock, blues and soul artists to come out of the UK, Ben Poole, you won’t want to miss this evening of electrifying music at The Cluny! thecluny.com

A Grand Old Bird An Andean condor lived at the Natural History Museum in Newcastle for 25 years from 1886. After a journey of over 7,500 miles (by boat), she was finally presented to the Natural History Society of Northumbria by Mr W. C. Tripler, a mine owner from Coquimbo, Chile. The young condor was given her own large aviary behind the Museum, purchased for her by subscribers, where she would lay one egg a year. Poet Basil Bunting well remembered visiting the bird as a child, saying ‘it had become almost a symbol of Newcastle…’ Announcing her death in the local papers, E. Leonard Gill, the museum’s curator said: ’She developed into a fine adult female, and except when emerging from her bath - one of course is not expected to call on a condor even at such time - she was always to be seen in splendid feather and condition.’ You can still come to see the condor in the collections of the Great North Museum: Hancock today, as she was stuffed in 1911. Learn about the collections Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums cares for by visiting twmuseums.org.uk or check out any of our nine accessible and friendly venues.

A grand game changer... ONE OF THE CITY’S MOST HISTORICAL HANGOUTS HAS HAD A FACELIFT! IT'S NOW A FOODIE’S PARADISE WITH FANCY INTERIORS. If walls could talk, the Union Rooms is one of the first places we’d sit down for a tipple and a tittle-tattle. Designed in 1877, the grand old building has many a tale to tell, first operating as a gentlemen’s club, then standing empty for 20 years before being resorted as a JD Weatherspoon in 1999. Now, after a picture-perfect regeneration programme, which kicked off in August 2018, it’s back and it’s more beautiful than ever. Cyclone Leisure Group, the brains behind other foodie favourites in the region, such as the San Lorenzo restaurants in Gosforth and Washington, have brought the business back to life. Now, it's a fresh and flamboyant new foodie hotspot, serving everything from brekkie

and brunch, to Sunday lunch, late night pizza and cocktails! Sitting proudly in its place on Westgate Road, the Union Rooms retains much of its French Renaissance-style architecture, helping to create a bold new space, combining funky furniture with impressive roofscape features and quirky modern touches. It’s sleek and it’s stylish, but it’s as grand as it was all of those years ago. An iconic building with a new lease of life. We’re in for a between-meetings ‘Power Lunch’ – perfect for on-the-go city workers. From Monday to Friday between 12pm and 5pm, foodies can enjoy piccolo pizza, baps, wraps, salads and burgers, all for just £6.50! Round up your work pals and check in for your

very own lunch-break pizza party - packing two tasty toppings on a 9-inch, hand-pulled, stone-baked pizza. If pizza’s not your thing, you can ‘wrap or bap’ with fajita chicken, brekkie club, salt beef and more! It’s the ‘Pig Pimpin’ wrap for us. A wholesome, hand-stretched flat bread oozing with BBQ pulled pork - topped with a cheesey sauce. Served with skin on fries and salad, it’s the perfect express lunch. We’ve already got plans to return for a roast in the glorious Garden Room, with oodles of gravy, veggies and Yorkie puds! The colourful cocktail list is also worth checking up on - as is the make-your-own pizza kids menu and bustling breakfast club. unionroomsnewcastle.co.uk
