21.06.19 - 29.06.19 FUNFAIR FRIDAY
The Hoppings 2019 THIS FAMILY-FRIENDLY FUNFAIR HAS MADE HISTORY IN OUR CITY. POP DOWN FOR A WHIZZ ON THE WALTZERS OR A RIDE ON THE BIG WHEEL THIS JUNE!
We’re getting serious about summer in Newcastle, and we just can’t help but get excited about all of the fun things going on in the city this season… The Hoppings is back for another summer spectacular bringing family fun and fairground rides to the Town Moor once again! The best-loved Geordie funfair first came to Newcastle 136 years ago as a counterattraction to the boozy goings-on at the annual Race Week at nearby Newcastle Racecourse. In the following 50 years, the rides and attractions we all know and love today were gradually introduced to create what is now one of Europe’s largest travelling fairs.
It’s back in the city for another year and we can’t wait to check out our favourite rides and some new attractions on the Town Moor. So gather your gang and get your umbrellas at the ready (because everyone knows it always rains when the biggest and best travelling funfair comes to the Toon)! Get the whole family together and get down to the busy and buzzy Town Moor from Friday 21 June until Sunday 29 June for guaranteed good times with over 300 rides, including the return of many traditional attractions! A diary date for the whole family - whatever the weather may be, we advise you to make a day of it this June! hoppingsfunfairs.com

DISCOVER OUR CITY
Secret Newcastle THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT OUR CITY
Newcastle is known for many things; its nightlife, the Geordie accent, a collection of bridges, friendly folk and an industrial heritage. You may think you know the city like the back of your hand, but we bet we could teach you a thing or two! The team behind the city’s first build-to-rent apartment development, The Forge, popped over some hidden gems and under-the-radar cultural must-sees, foodie treats and low-key bars; and we just thought they were too good not to share with our readers! Check out the secrets of NE1...
at Quilliam Brothers Teahouse near Haymarket. Over two floors, you can sit down to a brew, choosing from over 60 different types of looseleaf tea. Plus it’s open until midnight Monday to Saturday, so it doesn’t matter what time you have a craving for a good cuppa! Go here for your toon tea fix!
Dispensary, which has opened its doors on Heber Street. It’s a quirky coffee house which will soon be launching white chocolate candyfloss hot chocolate, a true Instagrammer’s dream.
SAY CHEERS IN A ‘SPEAKEASY’ BAR
Known as the gateway to Old Newcastle, not many people know that Newcastle Castle is standing proud in the Castle Garth area of the city. It’s open for the public to explore seven days a week and you can even climb up to stand on the rooftop, where the views of the city are amazing. The castle also hosts film nights in its Great Hall from horrors to family favourites. From history to food and film events, there's something for everyone.
Newcastle certainly knows its cocktails and you’re never far from a bar, but there’s something exciting about lesser-known places and their exclusivity. Tucked away behind Bierrex on Pilgrim Street lies The Poison Cabinet. Its ever-evolving drinks menu is filled with potions, aperitifs and digestifs which you certainly won’t find anywhere else in the city!
THE MOST INSTAGRAMMABLE QUAYSIDE SHOT
A DOUGHNUT CAFÉ EXISTS
Yes that’s right, doughnut lovers rejoice! Proven Goods Co. are the makers of handmade doughnuts which have won over those with a sweet tooth in recent years, popping up at the Quayside Market and various coffee shops. The bakery is based in Hoult’s Yard and opens Wednesday to Sunday, where you can stock up on your favourite flavours, whether it’s rhubarb jam and vanilla custard or ‘The Homer’ which is a take on the classic Simpsons doughnut d'oh!
TEA-RRIFIC TEAHOUSE
Newcastle may not have a Bettys Tea Room, but the city still loves its tea, no more so than
We all know the Quayside is amazingly photogenic, lined with its bridges, mix of old and new buildings and quirky features. It's a great location for happy snapping, but there’s a certain spot where you can take the best shot of the Quayside stretch and we’ll tell you where. Head to the Free Trade Inn and climb the stairs, then wow - what a view! Well worth the climb and definitely picture-perfect. Oh-so Instagrammable!
NEWCASTLE ACTUALLY HAS ITS OWN CASTLE
A BOOK LOVER’S DREAM
The Lit & Phil is home to over 170,000 books and you’ve probably walked past it many times and not even realised! Rooted on Westgate Road not far from Central Station, it’s been open for almost 200 years since 1825. You can become a member and use the space plus borrow books regularly, but even if you don’t join, it’s a stunning building so definitely worth a look around!
GO CLIMBING... AND SHOP
intu Eldon Square is known as the city’s main shopping centre, but it has a climbing experience too. Why not try something different and take on the challenge of the 19 climbing towers and get your adrenaline pumping? You’ll find Vertigo Adventure Climbing upstairs within the Eldon Leisure zone.

Snowstorm brainwave Gladstone Adams from Whitley Bay was, amongst many other roles, the official photographer for Newcastle United Football Club from the 1920s to the 1950s. In April 1908 he set off on an epic car journey to London to see Newcastle play in the FA cup final. The speed limit at the time was 20 miles per hour, so it took him some time and the journey in itself caught so much attention that they displayed the car in a shop window! Newcastle lost 3-1 to Wolves, and as he drove back, to top it all, it began to snow. He stopped many times to clear snow from the windscreen of his 1904 Darraq, prompting him to create his prototype windscreen wiper, now held at the Discovery Museum, which could be operated either by hand or foot of the driver, or automatically. He was awarded a patent for it in April 1911 but he never manufactured his idea. Mr Adams was a fascinating person of whom it is said that, as a photographic officer in the Royal Flying Corps in the First World War, he found the body of Baron Von Richthofen, “the Red Baron”, and helped to arrange his funeral. Learn about the collections Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums cares for by visiting twmuseums.org.uk or check out any of the nine accessible and friendly venues.
