Word on the Street INTRODUCING INTERMEZZO

Newcastle doesn’t fall short of cool bars to hang out in. But when news of a new opening breaks, we can’t help but get excited! On that note, we’d like to introduce our NE1 readers to the brand spanking new Intermezzo bar, taking over the site of Bierrex. This cinemathemed cocktail bar was previously based at the Tyneside Cinema, before it closed its doors in 2016. But demand is high and it’s back in business, setting up home in a cool new spot on Pilgrim Street. Intermezzo is an all-rounder when it comes to eating and drinking in Newcastle. Go here in the morning for coffee, early afternoon for lunch and then crafty cocktails as day turns to night! What’s not to love? facebook.com/intermezzo82

MELA MOMENTS

We’ve got an exciting date for your summer diaries, folks! Newcastle Mela is back in the city on 25th and 26th August 2019 - bringing bundles of culture to the streets of NE1! This year’s line-up brings in people from far and wide, celebrating Pakistani, Bengali, Indian and other South Asian cultures. It’s a great place to learn something new, be entertained, enjoy exotic cuisine, dance to new music, experience fine art and unleash yourself in some of the finest traditions and cultures from around the world. The word ‘Mela’ means ‘to meet’ and originates from the Indian sub continent. It is commonly used to describe a large gathering of people celebrating artistic, religious or political events - a fair or a festival. If that doesn’t sum it up, then we don't know what will! It’s a fab, free family event - make sure you’re a part of it this summer! newcastlemela.co.uk

TIME FOR A PRIDE PARTY!

Summer is hotting up and NE1’s events calendar continues to deliver the goods! A July highlight is, and always has been, Northern Pride Festival. Sponsored, once again, by NE1, Northern Pride brings the UK’s biggest and best free LGBTQ+ celebration back to the Toon from 19th - 21st July 2019, it’s one of the city’s most colourful summer events, and we wouldn’t want you to miss it! The Town Moor will once again become the Pride Festival Arena, home to the main stage, food and drink and a fairground for family fun; while Exhibition Park joins the festival to become the Community Village - home to youth zones, a health and wellbeing zone and Rainbow Village. This fantastic three-day festival will include the Stonewall Remembrance March, big-name artists including Fleur East, Liberty X and Saara Aalto, and plenty of rainbow flag-waving fun. Don’t miss it! northern-pride.com

10 YEARS OF NEWCASTLE CITY LIBRARY

We’re celebrating 10 years of Newcastle City Library this summer, and it’s the perfect opportunity to enjoy and appreciate one of the city’s finest leisure hubs. It took 1,260 construction workers, working with 1,000 tonnes of structural steel over 89,308 square feet, for this now iconic NE1 building to form. And shortly after, Her Majesty the Queen and His Highness the Duke of Edinburgh officially opened the library during a special ceremony on 6th November 2009. To mark the 10 year celebrations, the City Library has been hosting a fines amnesty throughout June, encouraging people to return to the library with all fines waived, so if you've had that copy of Wuthering Heights in your bookshelf for years, pop it back with no panic! Make sure you pay our City Library a visit this summer and stay tuned online for events and workshops. newcastle.gov.uk/services/libraries-and-culture

CHARITY HEROES

For the 12th year, Gainford Group has teamed up with Tyne Tees Models to present Miss Newcastle - now established as one of the biggest charity events in the North East social calendar. The 2019 final, held at The County Hotel on Friday 14th June, raised a recordbreaking £30,087 for The Chronicle Sunshine Fund, amazing! Even more incredible, over the years, the event has raised over £200,000 for local charities, so huge congratulations to all involved! Miss Newcastle pride themselves on encouraging contestants to step out of their comfort zone and engage in creative charity work to raise thousands of pounds for local charities, and The Sunshine Fund, for whom they’ve raised money for the past four years, provides specialist equipment to hundreds of disabled children in the North East every year. Miss Newcastle is a key player in the charity's development, so hats off to them and hats off to this year's finalists! missnewcastle.com

CONNECTING EUROPEAN CITIES WITH LUFTHANSA

COSTA COLLECT

NE1’s cultured coffee drinkers are in for a treat this month as the brand rolls out a brand new scheme in Newcastle. So what’s the plan? Costa customers will be able to pre-order their favourite beverages through the Costa App, and pay before entering the store. Great for those city workers who may not have a minute to spare when packing up a cup of the good stuff in between meetings! Pre-ordered drinks will be prepared by the store teams and left at a designated collection point, meaning there’s absolutely no queuing involved - winner! What’s more? You’ll also get reward points while using the app. Bank them up, and your next coffee might be on Costa! costa.co.uk/collect

MORE AWARDS FOR NORTHUMBRIA UNI!

The world’s largest aviation group and the market leader in Europe’s airline sector, The Lufthansa Group, have announced a brand new route from Newcastle International Airport! The airline will take passengers, travelling for both business and leisure, from Newcastle to Munich in an Airbus A319 six days per week. The new route will not only give our city direct access to a much wider global network, but will also encourage tourists across southern Germany. It’s safe to say, Newcastle’s networking opportunities are flying! newcastleairport.com

As our friends at Northumbria University celebrate topping the UK university rankings for graduate start-ups based on turnover for the 5th time in the last 6 years(!), it’s only right that we shout about their amazing achievement from the rooftops. However, that’s not all! Not only have they supported the development of over 370 graduate companies that now employ almost 1,100 people, and turn over more than £80 million per year, they will shortly open a new, purpose-built incubator hub, designed to support the flourishing community of student and graduate start-ups! Located next to the main campus, Innovation Northumbria will open its doors in October and will act as a creative space for new ideas and businesses to grow. In order to keep the initiative going, Innovation Northumbria is urging businesses to offer mentoring and financial backing. For more info, visit: northumbria.ac.uk/incubatorlaunch.
