EACH ISSUE WE WELCOME YOU TO THE MAGAZINE WITH AN INTRODUCTION FROM A MEMBER OF THE NE1 TEAM, GIVING YOU THEIR UNIQUE TAKE ON WHAT’S GOING ON.

FRESH FROM THE PRESS

I love summer in this city! There’s just so much going on! We’ve already brought an elite cycling race to the city centre, screened sporting action from England’s amazing Cricket World Cup win, Wimbledon and the Tour de France to hundreds of people and laid the first weekend of astro-turf, so you might just be wondering what is next? Well (drum roll please), we’ve just launched kayaking tours from our Newcastle City Marina, and I honestly think there is no better way to experience the Tyne. We’re continuing our Blackett Street Family Fun weekends, this time with even more colourful seating and even more activation, and our Screen on the Green movie schedule is better than ever. NE1 Restaurant Week is making its much-anticipated return on the 5th August, our Bigg Foodie Fridays continue to pop-up on the Bigg Market on the last Friday of every month and there’s a great selection of food traders popping up on our Quayside Seaside – I’ll be eating my way through summer! There are also some great places to sit, relax and take in our city in the sun! The Village Green on Northumberland Street will be back in-situ, our Grey Street Gathering may just be the best spot to take in the beautiful architecture of Newcastle and the much-loved Quayside Seaside is the perfect relaxation spot. So with events all around the city and (hopefully) some glorious sunshine, I think this will be a summer to remember… CATHERINE CORRIGAN MARKETING & EVENTS EXECUTIVE

THERE’S NO-ONE WITH THEIR EAR TO THE GROUND MORE THAN US AT NE1, AND WE LOVE TO SHARE OUR SECRETS WITH YOU… THE SECRET TOWER

One of the city’s leading event destinations is set to expand upon previous success with a six-figure investment! Nestled in the heart of NE1 on Tower Street with amazing views of the Quayside, The Secret Tower has enjoyed incredible success since opening in 2016 and established itself amongst the Toon’s premium event venues. With demand for beautiful tailored weddings and corporate events so high, The Secret Tower is now set for another state of the art kitchen and further hospitality options. Go team! thesecrettower.co.uk

Behind the door... IT’S A GORGEOUS BUILDING WE ALL RECOGNISE, IN THE HEART OF THE CITY, BUT WHAT LIES BEHIND THE DOOR OF NEWCASTLE’S OLD POST OFFICE? WE FLUNG OPEN THE FRONT DOOR AND HAD A GOOD NOSEY INSIDE! Built in 1876, the Old Post Office on St Nicholas Street has seen the ebbs and flows of city life for almost 150 years. Sitting proudly opposite Newcastle Cathedral, it is a wonder of 19th century architecture and is Grade II listed. The name, of course, gives away the building’s original purpose, it was once the hub of Newcastle City Centre, handling 81 million letters, 1.9 million parcels and over 4.8 million telegrams per year - and that was in 1899! However, it now serves as HQ for NBS - a leading technology platform for the construction industry, used by organisations from small architecture and engineering firms, to the very largest global construction companies. Back in March 2016, the NBS team set out to transform their HQ and inside the vision has come to life, creating one of the North East’s

coolest offices. The recent £5.8m refurbishment has injected new life into the building, and it now boasts beautiful, contemporary interiors, while still retaining many of its original features including steel beams in the courtyard that were also used on the Tyne Bridge and window frames which were once put out during Suffragette protests. As well as two open-plan offices, it also boasts a beautiful outdoor garden terrace with glorious greenery and views of St Nicholas Cathedral, as well as exhibition space, a lecture theatre and a buzzy café that you can book out for events! Local architects and construction teams from JDDK and Surgo have been the brains behind the project, which has picked up accolades including ‘Best Refurbished and Recycled Workplace’ at the British Council for Offices Awards.

So there you have it, we’ve all walked past, gazed up at its sky-high splendour and been taken aback by its stunning design; but now you know what's inside! Watch out for more ‘Behind the Door’ features

in future weeks, and if you want to know what’s behind a particular door, why not ask us to look into it? Tweet us @NewcastleNE1
