Culture Break BROUGHT TO YOU BY TYNE & WEAR ARCHIVES & MUSEUMS YOU’RE A BRICK
This is not just any old brick. It comes from an early 15th century house in Hawk’s yard on Bottle Bank, Gateshead, and was dug from the foundations in July 1936. Bottle Bank street is as old as the word bottle, which comes from the Saxon, meaning a habitation (such as Harbottle and Wallbottle).

Arriving in NE1 after a successful run of dates at Edinburgh Fringe Festival, join Chandler and the gang for an evening of mischief, mishap, and music! Featuring original songs such as (He’s her) Lobster!, Richard’s Moustache, and You’re Over Me? When Were You Under Me?, the gang take on Naked Thursdays, a power cut and a dinosaur convention. What could possibly go wrong? Tickets £10 per person. northernstage.co.uk

Until 1790, this street was the only way to cross the roman bridge over the Tyne (situated where the swing bridge is now). Every cart and stage coach wishing to travel through Newcastle had to go up and down this steep street, including that of King Charles I, who travelled along this road (hurriedly mended before he arrived) in 1633. William Hawks, whose name the yard holds, owned an ironmongery, anchorsmith and foundry business based on Bottle Bank, which went on to become the Hawks Company, one of the largest companies to emerge during the British Industrial Revolution. They built the High Level Bridge and also constructed the first iron boat, the Vulcan, here on the Tyne. Gradually this area was bypassed by a less steep road and eventually became slums which were listed to be cleared in 1925, which is when our brick, full of history, was collected.
