EVERY TIME YOU PLAY, NEWCASTLE WINS!

FRESH FROM THE PRESS

I’m Jordan, the latest addition to the NE1 team. Specialising in digital marketing, my whole life revolves around content, content, content. Not a day goes by when I’m not thinking about ways in which we can show off the cool things happening here in Newcastle. My time so far at NE1 has been extremely exciting. I’m constantly running around the city meeting new people and businesses, experiencing things that you wouldn’t get in your standard 9-to-5 job. My highlights so far include filming a video for the night-time kayaking glow tours on the Quayside. Paddling around the Tyne whilst having to hold on to a brand new iPhone 11 was a scary experience, that’s for sure! As we enter a new decade, I will be focusing on NE1 Newcastle Restaurant Week and posting lots of social media content around the 100+ city centre restaurants involved. Team lunch is always a nightmare to organise as there are so many to choose from! I’m very much looking forward to the next year of my placement, and I’m sure the events and activities I’ll be getting involved in will get crazier and crazier. I can’t wait to see what’s around the corner.

NEW IN NE1

Word on the Street GOOGLE DEVFEST LANDS IN NE1

Tech leaders and business entrepreneurs recently arrived at TusPark Newcastle Eagle Labs for the North East’s first-ever developer event! Held by global technology giant, Google, the Google DevFest whistled into the Toon as part of an exciting new partnership to help build the region’s emerging tech sector. The North East has been recognised as a vibrant hub for forward-thinking technology, and has been noted for its increasing levels of high-growth and high-potential startup businesses. From its home on Grainger Street, TusPark Newcastle Eagle Lab has already enabled the expansion of nine IoT (Internet of Things) businesses into China, and is working with many more to support their scale up and development! tuspark.co.uk/newcastle

MARVELLOUS MAYFAIR

Big news from The Gate as an all-new concept channelling the spirit of an iconic Newcastle venue, and one of the most famous names in the city’s nightlife history, has opened as a stunning new bar and restaurant. The Mayfair, situated just yards away from the site of the historic Mayfair Ballroom, is an uber-cool restaurant and bar where you can expect to find delicious home-cooked food, locally-sourced craft beers, gins and cocktails, as well as a selection of retro games and appearances from resident DJs each weekend. Fingers crossed it becomes as much a part of Newcastle folklore as the original Mayfair Ballroom, which hosted Led Zeppelin, Kylie Minogue, Pink Floyd and Nirvana in its time! thegatenewcastle.co.uk

TERRIFIC TOON TRANSFORMATION!

Plans to develop Strawberry Place into a £120m luxury culture hub have been given the green light! Situated just a stone’s throw from St James’ Park, this exciting new development will see a brand new 21-storey building with 204 top class apartments, an uber-luxurious hotel and two new modern office spaces. The project will bring new jobs, top class leisure facilities and lavish living spaces for the people of NE1 to enjoy. We can’t wait to see this one develop in the coming months! marrico.co.uk

FORWARD THINKING FOOD

Horticulture are making a massive difference to the environment this winter. We know that Christmas involves copious amounts of turkey, tinsel and Christmas trees, but instead of cutting down a tree to stand inside the restaurant, Horticulture have announced that they will be instead planting 25,000 fruit trees throughout 2020! Part of a new partnership with charity organisation, The Green Earth Appeal, this amazing scheme named ‘Carbon Free Dining’ will allow diners to pledge 50p each time they visit Horticulture. As well as serving delicious treats, Horticulture are doing their bit for the planet by making themselves carbon-neutral and tackling the climate crisis head on. Great work team! horticultureuk.co.uk

A WARM WELCOME TO NANDO’S!

Peri-Peri fans rejoice! Nando’s has opened up another restaurant right here in the Toon! The Portuguese-inspired food chain has moved in next door to Revolution on Westgate Road, and continues to serve up the finest flame-grilled fast food to the people of NE1. Nando's fans won't have to trail around the Toon to find their fix - with sites available at Eldon Square, The Gate and now next to Central Station! nandos.co.uk

Culture Break BROUGHT TO YOU BY TYNE & WEAR ARCHIVES & MUSEUMS

ARE YOU SITTING COMFORTABLY? Newcastle’s city streets lay upon ancient foundations, with Roman architecture underlying many of the roads we take today including the A193 and the A186. Hadrian’s Wall itself cuts through our modern city, known by the Romans as Pons Aelius, in front of Central Station. At Segedunum, at the far end of the wall in Wallsend, many finds have been recorded that also show the presence of the Romans in our area. As well as the impressive ruins of walls and buildings surrounding us, more intimate finds help to illustrate the everyday life of Romans. What have they ever done for us, we hear you say? Well, this is the only surviving stone toilet seat found in Roman Britain. The Segedunum seat is made for two, demonstrating the Romans' very different attitudes to privacy: the Roman version of toilet paper was a communal sponge on a stick! Two is nothing, however - the remains of Roman bathroomequivalents in Turkey have a capacity of 65 people! It is said that in Greece, posh Ephesians would send their slaves to the latrine in advance, to warm the seats; a luxury far beyond the chilly bottoms of the soldiers on Hadrian’s Wall. Learn about Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums’ collections at twmuseums.org.uk or check out any of their nine venues.
