FRESH FROM THE PRESS
I’m Kerry, Business Network Manager, and I joined the team back in September to deliver our NE1 Can programme to help engage businesses and young people across our region. We're working to raise ambition and aspiration among young people by showcasing what careers are available to them and giving advice on how to get there. The best part of my job is opening up the doors of businesses, informing young people of all the opportunities in the fabulous North East and helping them make informed decisions about their future. I’m often found trailing the city centre, dragging around a pop-up banner and rushing to our next event to make sure everything is in order and as it should be. Now that I’ve settled into the role, I’m really looking forward to encouraging businesses to do good whilst doing well and welcoming our workforce of tomorrow into their business, today. Culinary Connoisseurs
We headed to the Quayside to get a taste of what's being cooked up during Restaurant Week - and St. Vincent certainly didn’t disappoint! Since opening back in 2018, St. Vincent has been turning heads in NE1’s foodie scene. The elegant wine-bar café - just a stone's throw away from the river Tyne is a go-to for sublime small bites, complemented by highquality wines. Inspired by the quaint restaurants and bars dotted around the small villages of France and Italy, you're transported to warmer climes as soon as you pull up a chair. We love the plush leather seats, exposed wine racks, which showcase gorgeous bottles, and stunning marble topped
tables, all of which add to the charming atmosphere. The restaurant is serving up a mouthwatering NE1 Restaurant Week offer of four plates for just £15, which we took full advantage of. We kicked things off with a Tome Fort St Antoine; a semi-soft cow’s cheese bursting with earthy mushroom flavours and citrus notes. Paired with a glass of St. Vincent’s sumptuous house white wine, it’s fair to say this plate didn’t hang about long. Before our knives and forks hit the plate, we were greeted by an aromatic tenderstem broccoli offering; think fresher-than-fresh veggies, steamed to perfection, topped with shavings of luscious pecorino cheese. The show-stopper arrived in the form of plump, spicy meatballs in
homemade tomato sauce. Cooked and fried with a variety of fresh Italian herbs and spices, they're as authentic as can be. Simple, but oh-so delicious. We took great pleasure in dunking generous slices of just-baked

TIME TO CELEBRATE
DID YOU KNOW? Chinese culture has a rich history here in Newcastle. It was way back in 1949 that the Toon welcomed one of its very first Chinese Restaurants, on Scotswood Road. The Marlborough Cafe was a quaint tea room that sold ice cream, traditional breakfasts and authentic dinner dishes. In later years, the Wing Hong Chinese Supermarket opened in 1978 to serve the burgeoning Chinese community and became one of the first independent Chinese businesses right here in the city.

TOON THROWBACK
On this day
3RD FEBRUARY 1879
WE'RE LIGHTING UP A SIGNIFICANT MOMENT IN TOON HISTORY We all know that the Toon is steeped in history that’s shaped the world. But did you know that Mosley Street was the first city street in the world to be lit up by electric lighting? Take a trip back to the 19th century as we shine a light on a fascinating bulb of Geordie history…
Tyne and Wear Museum Archive
A BRIGHT SPARK... 3 FEBRUARY 1879
Out of Newcastle’s far-reaching history, Mosley Street is a comparatively modern street by Toon standards. Having begun construction sometime in the 18th century, Mosley Street welcomed the very first Theatre Royal in 1788 and transformed the street into a culture hotspot for Toon residents. Around the same time, North East native, Joseph Swan, had just finished creating the world’s first ever incandescent light bulb. After many failed public experiments, Swan publicly demonstrated a working lamp to an audience of over 700 people in The Lit & Phil in 1879! The lecture was such a groundbreaking revelation that Swan was asked to light the whole of Mosley Street, for one night, with his incredible new creation. Swan had changed the world; Mosley Street was the first street in the world to be lit by electricity on 3rd
February 1879 and, shortly after, The Swan Electric Light Company began installing light bulbs in homes and landmarks across England. Fast forward 141 years and Mosley Street has changed dramatically Now, the Theatre Royal proudly sits at the top of Grey Street, party animals can groove the night away at Bijoux and foodies can tuck into sumptuous steak
suppers at Miller & Carter - slightly different to the establishments back then! Next time you’re out and about and enjoying yourself on the streets of our stunning city, take a moment to cast your mind back to the 1870's and just how incredible it would have been to see Mosley Street lit up for the first time!
