FRESH FROM THE PRESS

Exactly one year ago, I started my NE1 journey as an intern. My time was filled with meeting wonderful business owners, working on exciting city centre projects, assisting the amazing Street Ranger team and becoming extremely attached to a pack of chalk pens and a Bigg Foodie Friday a-board. Not only did the experience confirm my love for marketing, events and the wonderful city of Newcastle, but also verified how important it is for me to contribute to an organisation that strives to make a real positive difference. With that said, so much can happen in a year and you guessed it - I’m the new kid on the block (again) at NE1! I’m so eager to get stuck in and do great things for businesses and the Newcastle community in my new role as Marketing and Events Executive. With organising everything from Restaurant Week, the Newcastle Motor Show and Screen on the Green, to the Search for Santa Trail at Christmas, I’m confident that the year ahead will be brimming with fast-paced fun, a healthy dose of chaos and lots more a-board writing!

Part of Life’s 20th anniversary year, Helen rocketed into the Toon to meet space enthusiasts, detail her incredible expedition to the Mir space station in 1991, and officially open two stunning attractions. Helen’s story is quite incredible... Days before her 28th birthday, Helen boarded the Soyuz TM-12 on 18th May 1991 and spent eight days in space, orbiting the Earth and researching life sciences. With Connor Hughes, bar manager & head bartender at Horticulture The espresso martini, like every cocktail, is about balance. Not too sweet, not too bitter, endlessly drinkable and delicious. We use a combination of the traditional vodka, Kahlua and fresh espresso along with the additions of white chocolate liqueur, sugar syrup and saline solution to add to the luxurious flavour and texture of the drink without changing it too much. The sugar and salt do not inherently make the cocktail sweet or salty, they simply act as balancing and enhancing ingredients, intensifying flavours such as coffee, chocolate and vanilla. Our percolator menu is the largest selection of coffee cocktails in the world and each one has been carefully created to showcase new and interesting flavours such as chocolate, poached pear and plum.

EATING OUT

SPICE OF LIFE NOW THAT THE DUST HAS SETTLED ON ANOTHER RECORD BREAKING NE1 RESTAURANT WEEK, WE’VE FINALLY MADE SPACE IN OUR DIARIES (AND BELLIES!) TO DIGEST SOME OF THE BEST MENUS TO GRACE THE TOON... As part of our foodie pilgrimage around NE1, we followed the delightful scents all the way to bustling curry metropolis, Dabbawal! Tucked away on the cobbled streets of High Bridge, Dabbawal is everything you’d expect from an award-winning modern Indian street food restaurant! You'll be blown away by the smell upon entering this eclectic eatery. A vibrant mix of herbs and tandoori spices meanders through the air, delivering a knockout blow to the senses. Next time you’re popping by, stick your head in for a moment - you’ll know exactly what we’re talking about! The interior is simple yet effective; oak counter tops, brushed steel lighting and reclaimed chairs add a slice of stylish elegance to the mix this subtle decor manages to combine the vibe of the sacred North East curry house with a modern Indian eatery.

Giant poppadoms are presented within a matter of seconds, paired with an assortment of three contrasting, but oh-so-delightful dips. A helping of refreshing Cobra makes for a strong start to proceedings. The story of Dabbawal is an intriguing one; these spice masters have paid homage to India's 'dabbawalas' - bicycle riding delivery men who transport freshly made, home-cooked dishes to thousands of office workers across Mumbai every lunch time! In our case, it's lunchtime in NE1 and four crisp Bombay bombs quickly arrive at the table from the Toon’s very own 'dabbawalas'. Think lip-smacking puris stuffed with spiced mashed potato and finished with a crunchy serving of sev. You'll find no conveyor belt system of round-the-clock food left to sit under a heat lamp here! Dabbawal takes great pride in serving fresh food, made from scratch.

10 // More listings at getintonewcastle.co.uk

Next up, a real show-stopper! It comes in the form of the murgh malai tikka - thick, succulent chicken fillets pan-roasted in garlic, ginger and basted with a delightful cream cheese marinade. Attention quickly turns to the mixed veggie grill. Another favourite from Dabbawal’s ‘tandoor’ section, this sizzling hot plate is brimming with spicy grilled vegetables and a generous helping of Indian cottage cheese. A glorious dish packed full of imaginative flavour and wow colours. Paired with a portion of crunchy masala chips, it’s a match made in heaven!

The chilly winter weather is soon forgotten about and the temperature rises with the Punjabi chilli chicken tikka - not even substantial lashings of Cobra can cool the inferno of the chilli, cumin, garlic and ginger marinade. With food that warms the soul, cool interiors, service with a great big smile, and top-notch value for money, it’s no surprise to see that Dabbawal has established itself as one of the-go-to Indian restaurants in NE1 - and indeed the North East! Check them out next time you’re in the Toon. You won't regret it! dabbawal.com

Art & Culture

Culture Break BROUGHT TO YOU BY TYNE & WEAR ARCHIVES & MUSEUMS

YOU SAY YOU WANT A REVOLUTION… Richard Hamilton taught at Newcastle University from 1953 to 1966 and explored innovative exhibition practice at the Hatton Gallery. He is well known for defining pop art as “popular, transient, expendable, lowcost, mass-produced, young, witty, sexy, gimmicky, glamorous, and Big Business.” But did you know that Richard Hamilton was also responsible for the sleeve design of the Beatles’ White Album in 1968? The name of the album is actually The Beatles but it has become known as the 'White Album' because of the design.

ELEANOR CONWAY: YOU MAY RECOGNISE ME FROM TINDER 27 FEBRUARY

Fasten your seatbelts, fierce comedy queen, Eleanor Conway is whistling into the Tyne Theatre & Opera House on her no holds-barred comedy tour! Best-loved for her fiery, tongue-in-cheek jokes, Eleanor smashed records recently with her multi-award winning 100 date show, ‘Walk of Shame’, selling out in 10 countries around the world! This time, this hilarious comedienne is tackling intimacy, sex and personal boundaries in the Toon this Feb. Guaranteed to have you rolling in the aisles! tynetheatreandoperahouse.uk Andrew Carnie, Stormy Whether (detail), 2019

The cover features a stamped edition number upon an entirely white sleeve. Andrew Wilson, Senior Curator of Modern and Contemporary art at Tate Britain says: “The number defines the reach of The Beatles: they have the biggest fanbase around the world, and the number is a reflection of that, it’s many millions, it’s huge... but at the same time the number that you had would be utterly personal to you.” The cover is the antithesis of the busy, people-filled cover of Sgt Pepper, but hidden inside is a poster in Hamilton’s characteristic collage style, full of candid snapshots of the band. Learn about Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums’ collections at twmuseums.org.uk or check out any of their nine venues.

BLACK WATERS 25 - 26 FEBRUARY

Northern Stage is bringing a poignant contemporary dance piece to the stage this February. Born out of a multicultural collaboration between Phoenix Dance Theatre and Indian Kolkata based Rhythmosaic, Black Waters draws on two historical narratives; the harrowing Zong Massacre of 1781 and the imprisonment of Indian freedom fighters by British colonial forces at the island Prison Kala Pani. A provocative piece inspired by true stories of oppression. northernstage.co.uk

GIVING YOU THE LOWDOWN ON THE LATEST PROJECTS & DEVELOPMENTS IN THE TOON... MAJOR MEDIA CENTRE ANNOUNCED!

BBC director general, Tony Hall, has recently announced that the BBC will open a leading technology and media hub right here in the city centre! Lord Hall stated that: “Design and engineering are creating a new tech hub in Newcastle upon Tyne - a city looking for fresh ideas, collaboration and innovation, with two highly successful universities and a digital cluster growing faster than any area outside London.” A massive development for the media sector in the region, the new tech centre would mean that more primetime programmes, short films and other media activities would be produced right here in the Toon! bbc.co.uk/bbcnewcastle

INTRODUCING PILGRIM PLACE Boulevard

THREE CHEERS TO... YOU!

NE1’s partygoers helped raise a record sum for a leading North East kids charity in December! Staff at Boulevard cabaret club held numerous fundraisers, shook buckets aplenty and hosted loads of cracking charity events to raise a staggering £20,000 for the Graham Wylie Foundation - a fantastic charity helping children and young people across the region. Boulevard are no strangers to charity work... they also raised a sensational £150,000 during an inaugural Halloween Spectacular. Amazing work everybody! boulevardnewcastle.co.uk

One of the biggest developments in the city’s history is set to turn listed buildings around Newcastle’s Pilgrim Street to bustling new bars, restaurants and office buildings. This exciting project will breathe new life into this side of the city, while also generating jobs and creating a hub of social and professional activity. The £100m development would see the former Bank of England plot turned into office blocks and leisure facilities, with work on the 12-floor Bank House office due to start in summer. ryderarchitecture.com

ROLLING INTO ACTION

Our friends at Pink Lane Bakery are doing their bit to reduce the site’s carbon footprint by ditching delivery vans in favour of ZMOVE’s zero-emission bikes! Switching up the delivery service will save the business almost £4,000 by avoiding new anti-pollution tolls. Loaded on board ZMOVE’s electric cargo bikes, the bakery’s daily trips from their home on Pink Lane to their retail site in Gosforth will clock up to almost 2,400 miles annually. pinklanecoffee.co.uk

Going to great lengths One of NE1's biggest and most talked about developments for 2020 is the iconic City Baths! We're delighted to hear that the facility is back in action and we can't wait to share what's inside following a spectacular £7.5m restoration... Built way back in 1928 by Nicholas and Dixon-Spain, the Grade II Listed building rolled out the red carpet to guests this winter - showing off the elegant confines of a new state-of-theart wellness facility. Built in a neo-Georgian style with art deco undertones, the original building featured two pool halls and

a traditional Turkish bath suite. Now, it's back in action with more wonderful wellness facilities than ever before! As well as carrying out beautiful restoration work to the building’s facade, the team have been hard at work creating modern health and fitness facilities fit for a bustling city like ours! Make sure you visit the brand spanking new City Baths and see what all the fuss is about! Before you do... a fun fact: Did you know that during the bitterly cold winter months, the swimming pools were covered with temporary flooring and instead used for the likes of dances, roller-skating and art exhibitions? city-baths.co.uk

Among them, was our incredible Bigg Market Project, coming away with the prestigious landscape prize. Northumbria University's Computer and Information Sciences Building

Bigg Market Other Design Award winners include Northumbria University's Computer and Information Sciences Building taking the prize for best new building; the Everyman Cinema - winners of the refurbishment trophy, due to the sparkling transformation from the former Legends nightclub, to a beautiful, boutique cinema on Grey
